On the latest episode of the ‘New Wave‘ podcast, Crimson Tide football star Ryan Williams said he told coach Nate Oats, “I’m gonna be standing on the bench, ya feel me?”
The joke, capped with a rhythmic clap and “de-fense” cheer, prompted a laugh from co-host Jaylen Mbakwe and Alabama hoops players and guests of the week Aden Holloway and Labaron Philon.
“Just give me the sweatsuit so I look like I’m on the team,” Williams said. “They gonna be like, ‘Is that Ryan?’ I’m gonna be like, ‘It ain’t even me.’ “

Philon thought back to the season opener against UNC-Asheville when Williams’ attendance made waves on social media.
“You couldn’t even watch the game,” Philon said. “Them people, they was way over there and came all the way down to where you were just to take a picture. I saw it with my own two eyes.”
Williams said he was “just trying to talk to my guys. Let them boys eat.”
Instead, it was another night when having to accommodate his celebrity with the media got in the way of an attempt at just trying to be a college student.
“They on the opposite side of the arena and they done tracked me down,” Williams said. “Can’t even watch the game.”

As Trey Galloway missed another shot — his fourth in the first six minutes of Indiana men’s basketball’s 94-69 loss to Illinois on Jan. 14 — Hoosier fans booed the fifth-year senior and one-time crowd favorite.
When Galloway left the floor two seconds later, fans cheered. And when Galloway’s face appeared on the Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall big screen during a timeout, fans booed once more.
As an Indiana captain, Galloway is perhaps more exposed to blame and external scrutiny. Indiana head coach Mike Woodson is notoriously difficult on his captains — but he thinks fans have gone too far.
“It’s just not right that fans are doing what they’re doing to him,” Woodson said on his radio show Monday. “Because I think he’s working his butt off. He plays hard. He tries to do the right things. He doesn’t always get it right — I get that — but I love him to death. His teammates love him.”
Galloway used to receive the loudest ovations from fans during pregame introductions of the Hoosiers’ starting five. He’s started 12 games this season but has transitioned back to a bench role for Indiana’s past three games amid a rough patch magnified in the Hoosiers’ loss to Illinois.
The Culver, Indiana, native has played in each of Indiana’s 21 games, but he’s averaging 7.4 fewer minutes per game this season than last. His production has dropped from 10.6 points and 4.6 assists per game in 2023-24 to just 7.1 points and 4.1 assists per contest this year.
Galloway has shot at a better clip from distance, hitting 35% of his triples after making only 26% last season, but his overall performance from the field has fallen from 46.6% to 41%.
Part of the reason for Galloway’s struggles stems from the knee injury he suffered at the end of the 2023-24 season. He underwent offseason knee surgery and didn’t participate in summer workouts, which he noted after Indiana’s 82-69 win over USC on Jan. 8 led to what he implied was a lack of chemistry early in the season.
Woodson said Jan. 21 that Galloway’s surgery will likely take over one year to fully recover from. The injury itself occurred late in the Hoosiers’ regular season, as Galloway played only seven minutes before exiting in pain during a 65-64 victory over Michigan State on March 10. Galloway didn’t play in the Big Ten Tournament the week after Indiana topped the Spartans.
Galloway faced questions in the lead-up to the season about his health. He didn’t start practicing until late September and didn’t reach full levels of participation until the second week of October.
Due to his focus on recovery during the offseason and subsequent lack of time on task with his teammates, Galloway’s been behind the 8 ball throughout the campaign. Still, Woodson holds his veteran leader in high regards.
“Listen, I love everything about Trey Galloway. I’ve always loved Trey Galloway,” Woodson said on his radio show. “Since I’ve had him, he’s been probably one of the hardest working young men that I’ve coached.”
The 6-foot-5, 205-pound Galloway has battled highs and lows on the court this season. He’s scored in double figures eight times, headlined by an 18-point outburst Nov. 29 against Providence College, but he’s been held scoreless three times and recorded one or fewer field goals in five games.
Indiana has experienced a similarly rocky season. As losers of four of their last five games, the Hoosiers are 14-7 overall and 5-5 in the Big Ten entering their 8 p.m. tipoff Friday against Purdue at Mackey Arena in West Lafayette, Indiana.
For Galloway, Friday’s tipoff marks the last time he’ll play Indiana’s biggest rival on the road. If his first 21 games are any indication, Galloway will blend moments of brilliance with intermittent frustration.
Hoosier fans may lose hope. Woodson never will.
“I know when I put him out there, he’s going to work his butt off and play hard for us,” Woodson said. “He makes mistakes just like all players make mistakes, but some of those mistakes, you have to live with them. I’ll go to war with Trey all day long every day.”

Purdue has won back-to-back Big Ten regular-season titles, and on this final day of January, it is still in position to compete for another despite the departure of two-time National Player of the Year winner Zach Edey. Yes, the Boilermakers are two games back of Michigan State in the loss column of the conference standings. And, no, they will not have the luxury of hosting the Spartans this season; they only have one game scheduled against Michigan State, and it’ll be played next month inside the Breslin Center.
So it’s an uphill battle, that’s for sure.
But Purdue is still in the race, alone in second of the Big Ten and one game ahead of Michigan in the win-column of the conference standings. And the Boilermakers will have an opportunity to extend that lead over the Wolverines late Friday when they welcome Indiana to Mackey Arena.

Even as 8.5-point underdogs, I believe Philly can keep this game close. Maxey is going to have a massive usage rate with Embiid and George out, and I expect him to step up with a big performance.
Russell Westbrook (DEN) over 12.5 points (-125) Westbrook has found a solid role in the Nuggets’ rotation this season, building strong chemistry with Nikola Jokic. He’s hit this line in four of his past five games while averaging 31.2 minutes during that stretch. The 76ers struggle with perimeter defense, which sets up well for Westbrook to make an impact on Friday.
LA Clippers at Charlotte Hornets Under 212.5 (-115) The Hornets are dealing with a brutal injury situation. Brandon Miller is out for the season with a wrist injury, and LaMelo Ball, Mark Williams and Cody Martin will also miss Friday’s game against the Clippers. Charlotte has hit the under in five of its past six games. Meanwhile, Kawhi Leonard is back, and the Clippers rank first in defensive rating over the last 10 games. With key players out for the Hornets, and the Clippers locking in defensively, this has all the makings of a low-scoring affair.
Josh Giddey (CHI) over 6.5 assists (-120) With Zach LaVine out, that plays into Giddey’s favor against the Raptors. He’s hit this line in three of his past five games and has averaged 12.8 potential assists per game during that stretch. The Raptors have struggled defensively, ranking 24th in points allowed per 100 possessions.
Milwaukee Bucks -2.5 (-115) Milwaukee has posted a 7-3 record over their past 10 games, and they rank sixth in offensive rating and 13th in defensive rating during that stretch. On the other hand, the Spurs are just 1-5 against the spread in their past six games. Keep an eye on Giannis Antetokounmpo, who dropped 44 points the last time he faced the Spurs in San Antonio.
Jayson Tatum (BOS) over 25.5 points (-120) Tatum has been inconsistent this season, hitting this line in 53% of his games, but this is a great bounce-back spot. He’s coming off of two underwhelming performances (19 and 16 points) yet has cleared this line in 64% of his 22 road games. The last time he faced the Pelicans, he dropped 38 points, and with a hefty 30.7% usage rate this season. Akron looks to extend its eight-game winning streak today when it visits Kent State in this Friday night MAC clash.
The Zips haven’t lost since Dec. 30, when they fell 76-75 at Princeton. They’re 15-5 overall and 8-0 in league play, putting them at the top of the conference. Akron couldn’t miss when it throttled second-place Miami (Ohio) last Saturday. The Zips knocked down 15 triples and shot 44% from 3 in the 102-75 victory. They followed that up with an 80-70 win over Northern Illinois on Tuesday.

This has a chance to be that regression spot for Akron and its hot offense.
Kent State is allowing just 64.2 points per game and, in conference games, has a defensive adjusted efficiency of 95.9, per KenPom. The Golden Flashes are allowing opponents to shoot 29% from deep in MAC play, which is the best mark in the league. Akron shoots 38% from the outside.

My Butler vs Georgetown College Basketball Betting Preview
While I’ve seen improvements from Butler and Georgetown this year, the two are still a combined 6-14 in Big East play.
Butler’s offense relies on wing creation from the versatile Jahmyl Telfort-Patrick McCaffery-Pierre Brooks II trio. Those three are solid in catch-and-shoot creation, good as ball-screen creators and even better at generating free throws.
I’m not entirely sure how they match up with Georgetown’s defense.
The Hoyas have an elite interior defense behind stud big man Thomas Sorber. They cover ball screens well and are excellent at defending the rim without fouling. Plus, they have plenty of wing length to cover the Bulldogs’ wing creation.
That said, they’re a little too compact, so I could see Butler beating them over the top, especially when Ed Cooley mixes in his zone defense, as the Bulldogs are a rock-solid zone offense (1.01 PPP, 61st percentile, per Synergy).
Ultimately, Georgetown prioritizes defending the rim, while Butler creates almost nothing at the rim.
On the other end of the court, the Hoyas are an interior-oriented, rim-running and glass-crashing offense behind Sorber, an elite roll man and flex cutter.
Butler runs a drop-coverage defense that funnels dribble creation. But the Bulldogs aren’t great defensively because their wings are flat-footed and can’t stay in front of the dribble.
That said, Georgetown relies more on secondary creation and is relatively uncomfortable with on-ball dribble penetration, which makes the Hoyas uncomfortable against drop coverage. The mercurial Jayden Epps is the only guy who can create against those sets.
Ultimately, I don’t have an excellent feel for this matchup.
If I had to pick a side, I’d lean toward Butler, as the Bulldogs could beat Georgetown over the top, while I doubt Georgetown can adjust its typical offense.
But this is a high-variance game dependent on whether or not Butler can hit those shots.
