Will Iowa qualify for this year’s Big Ten men’s basketball tournament?

The Gazette offers audio versions of articles using Instaread. Some words may be mispronounced.

Here’s the reality: At 4-6 at the halfway point of the Big Ten regular-season, the Iowa men’s basketball team has some winning to proceed to the league’s tournament in Indianapolis March 12-16.

With the addition of four new members, an 18-team tourney apparently was too unwieldy for the conference. Not that a 15-team event isn’t, but that’s the number the league chose. It’s like relegation in European soccer leagues, except the bottom three teams won’t be replaced at the end of the season.

After its 82-65 loss at Ohio State on Monday, Iowa was in 12th-place in the Big Ten at 4-6. That’s not very far from 16th.

Minnesota, Northwestern and Rutgers are 3-6. The bottom three entering Tuesday night’s play are 3-7 Penn State, 2-7 Nebraska and 1-8 Washington.

Iowa is 4-1 at home in the Big Ten, 0-5 on the road. It won two of its home games by one point and another in overtime. On the road, it has lost by an average of 16.8 points per game, and lost its last four by 20.5 points.

Five of the Hawkeyes’ remaining 10 games are against the conference’s five ranked teams. Purdue, Wisconsin, Oregon and Michigan State all come to Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

The Hawkeyes can put some distance between themselves and Rutgers, Northwestern and Nebraska with wins at those schools. The other two road games are against rising Maryland and No. 18 Illinois.

Two glaring statistics suggest Iowa will need improvement just to go 4-6 in the second half of the Big Ten schedule.

In conference games, the Hawkeyes are last in field goal percentage defense (52.0 percent). By contrast, Michigan State has held league foes to 38.8 percent shooting. Wisconsin is at 41.8 percent, Purdue and Illinois at 42.9.

Iowa also is last in rebounding margin at minus-8.5 per game. That’s 3.5 per game worse than anyone else.

The stats aren’t all bad. The Hawkeyes are second in the league behind Purdue in an important department, turnover margin. They’re fifth in field goal shooting (47.8 percent).

By the way, finishing 15th is no bargain. Nor is ending 10th through 14th. The 10th through 15th teams will play on Wednesday at the league tourney, and would have to win five games in five days to capture the championship. The 5-9 seeds begin play Thursday, and the top four seeds start on Friday.

Iowa’s next game is at home next Tuesday against Purdue.

Comments: (319) 398-8440; mike.hlas@thegazette.com

As the regular season winds down and teams jockey for position in the Big Ten men’s basketball standings, one burning question remains: Will Iowa qualify for this year’s Big Ten tournament?

The Hawkeyes have had an up-and-down season so far, with impressive wins over top-ranked teams like Michigan State and Illinois, but also suffering some disappointing losses along the way. Currently sitting in the middle of the pack in the conference standings, Iowa will need to finish strong in their remaining games to secure a spot in the tournament.

With talented players like Luka Garza leading the way, Iowa certainly has the potential to make a deep run in the tournament. However, they will need to focus and continue to play at a high level to ensure their spot in the postseason.

So, Hawkeyes fans, what do you think? Will Iowa qualify for this year’s Big Ten men’s basketball tournament, and if so, how far do you think they can go? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!

UCLA Bruins vs. Oregon Ducks: How to watch NCAA Basketball online, TV channel, live stream info, start time

Halftime Report

UCLA and Oregon have shown up to the game, but their offenses sure haven’t. UCLA has a bit of a cushion as they currently lead Oregon 40-26.

UCLA entered the match having won four straight and they’re just one half away from another. Will they make it five, or will Oregon step up and spoil it? We’ll know soon.

Who’s Playing

Oregon Ducks @ UCLA Bruins

Current Records: Oregon 16-4, UCLA 15-6

How To Watch

  • When: Thursday, January 30, 2025 at 10:30 p.m. ET
  • Where: Pauley Pavilion — Los Angeles, California
  • TV: Fox Sports 1
  • Follow: CBS Sports App
  • Online streaming: fuboTV (Try for free. Regional restrictions may apply.)
  • Ticket Cost: $5.97

What to Know

Oregon and UCLA are an even 5-5 against one another since March of 2021, but not for long. Both will face off in a Big Ten battle at 10:30 p.m. ET on Thursday at Pauley Pavilion. Coming off a loss in a game the Ducks were expected to win, they now face the more daunting task of proving themselves against unfavorable odds.

Last Saturday, Oregon came up short against Minnesota and fell 77-69.

Even though the team lost, they still had their share of impressive performances. One of the best came from Brandon Angel, who earned 18 points in addition to five rebounds. The dominant performance also gave him a new career-high in threes (three). Another player making a difference was TJ Bamba, who went 5 for 8 en route to 15 points plus two steals.

Oregon struggled to get the ball back on offense and finished the game with only four offensive rebounds. That’s the fewest offensive rebounds they’ve posted since back in January of 2024.

Meanwhile, UCLA waltzed into their contest on Monday with three straight wins… but they left with four. They came out on top against the Trojans by a score of 82-76.

UCLA’s success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Aday Mara led the charge by dropping a double-double on 12 points and 11 rebounds. Mara is also on a roll when it comes to blocks, as he’s now posted two or more in the last three games he’s played. Eric Dailey Jr. was another key player, going 6 for 10 en route to 16 points plus six rebounds and two steals.

Oregon’s loss ended a four-game streak of away wins and brought them to 16-4. As for UCLA, their victory bumped their record up to 15-6.

Some high-performance offense is likely on the agenda as the two teams are some of the highest scoring teams in the league. Oregon hasn’t had any problem running up the score this season, having averaged 77.9 points per game. However, it’s not like UCLA struggles in that department as they’ve been averaging 75.9. With both teams so easily able to put up points, the only question left is who can run the score up higher.

While only Oregon took care of their fans the last time they played, neither team managed to cover. Looking forward, UCLA is the favorite in this one, as the experts expect to see them win by 4.5 points. They might be worth a quick bet since they’ve covered the spread the last six times they’ve played Oregon.

Odds

UCLA is a 4.5-point favorite against Oregon, according to the latest college basketball odds.

The oddsmakers had a good feel for the line for this one, as the game opened with the Bruins as a 3.5-point favorite.

The over/under is 140.5 points.

Drew family runs deep in Grand Canyon basketball

The Drew family has a rich history in Grand Canyon basketball, with multiple generations leaving their mark on the program. From grandparents to parents to siblings, the Drews have made a lasting impact on the court and in the community.

The patriarch of the family, Coach Bill Drew, was a standout player for Grand Canyon University in the 1970s and went on to coach the team for over two decades. His passion for the game and dedication to his players have set the standard for the Drew family’s involvement in the program.

Coach Drew’s sons, Mark and Chris, both followed in their father’s footsteps and played for Grand Canyon University. Mark was a dominant force on the court, earning multiple accolades and leading the team to several conference championships. Chris, known for his sharpshooting abilities, was a key contributor to the team’s success during his time at GCU.

The Drew family’s legacy continues with the next generation, as Coach Bill’s grandchildren have also made their mark on the court. Whether it’s coaching, playing, or supporting the team, the Drews are always there to lend their expertise and passion for the game.

My Memphis vs Tulane College Basketball Betting Preview

The two best defenses in the AAC square off in New Orleans on Thursday night as plucky Tulane hosts mighty Memphis.

The Green Wave has been far better than expected this year, as they’re looking to pull even in the standings with Memphis at 6-2.

Ron Hunter’s squad ranks 327th in the country in experience and 325th in minutes continuity from last season, yet the Wave sit near the top of the league and nearly 50 spots higher than their preseason KenPom rank.

Memphis looks to stay on top of the league, move to 7-1 in the AAC and further its at-large NCAA Tournament case.

The Tigers outclass everyone in talent in this conference, but of course, similar to the prior year, they tend to play down to competition. Memphis’ one conference slip-up this year happened on the road at Temple, and Tulane is perfect at home this season in conference play.

The Tigers are led by All-American PJ Haggerty and two power-conference players Dain Dainja and Tyrese Hunter.

All Memphis needs to do in this game is protect the rock, and it should emerge victorious. Tulane’s zone is fierce, but if the Tigers can get the ball into the paint, they should score at will. The Green Wave rank just 11th in the AAC in 2-point field goal percentage defense and have been average stopping action at the rim.

On the defensive end, Memphis has a distinct athleticism edge on just about every team it plays. The Tigers lead the league in turnover rate forced and effective field goal percentage allowed.

Action PRO Upsell Image

While 3-point splits have been in their favor (AAC opponents are shooting 27.6% from deep), their quickness, length and athleticism impacts shot-making in a real way.

Look for the Tigers to try to get out in transition and beat the Tulane zone down the floor. Memphis plays at the fastest offensive pace in the AAC and would love not to mess with Ron Hunter’s trickery in the half-court.

Ron Hunter has had Penny Hardaway’s number the past few seasons, going 4-2 in regular season play against Memphis. His 1-3-1 extended zone could give the Tigers fits. Memphis has the highest offensive turnover rate in the AAC, and Tulane will be eager to exploit the Tigers’ looseness with the ball all night long.

Tulane will force the Tigers to be shooters, which isn’t their game. Haggerty is a gamer and Tyrese Hunter can get magma hot from deep, but generally, Memphis wants to drive and get the ball close to the cup. Making Memphis uncomfortable will no doubt be a top priority for Ron Hunter and his defense.

Offensively, Tulane doesn’t have any stars, but the pieces gel nicely and form a sum that’s greater than the parts. Ron Hunter did a great job identifying power conference castaways looking for career rebirths.

To date in AAC play, the Green Wave sports a 60% assist rate, a sign of their unselfishness on the offensive end and Ron Hunter’s ability to coach and get a brand new team to co-exist and thrive.

Tulane’s positional size will also be an asset for it on Thursday against the athletic Tigers. The Wave are bigger than the Tigers on the wings and every player on the floor is versatile and multi-positional.

On offense, Ron Hunter will often feature lineups with four or five guys who can bury shots from outside the arc. Tulane’s size will put pressure on Memphis on both ends of the court.

At home in New Orleans as a sizable dog, the hungry Green Wave should be live. This team has plenty of players who have played at a higher level and won’t be intimidated by the names on the back of the Memphis jerseys.

Look for Ron Hunter to flex his muscles against Penny and keep his Wave close for a full 40 minutes.

In a highly anticipated match-up, the Memphis Tigers will face off against the Tulane Green Wave in college basketball action. Both teams are looking to make a statement in the 2025 season and this game could be a crucial turning point for them.

Memphis, led by their star player, is coming off a strong performance in their previous game and will be looking to carry that momentum into this match-up. Tulane, on the other hand, is looking to bounce back from a tough loss and show that they have what it takes to compete with the top teams in the conference.

As for the predictions, this game could go either way as both teams have shown flashes of brilliance throughout the season. However, I believe that Memphis will have the edge in this game and will come out on top with a narrow victory.

In terms of odds, Memphis is favored to win this game with a spread of -5.5 points. The over/under for total points scored is set at 145.5.

The game is scheduled to tip-off at 7:00 PM EST and will be televised on ESPN. Be sure to tune in to see which team comes out on top in this exciting match-up.

The Tigers are coming off a strong season and are looking to continue their winning streak against Tulane. However, Tulane is a formidable opponent and will be looking to pull off an upset.

In terms of injury updates, both teams are relatively healthy heading into the game. Tulane has also had a few players dealing with minor injuries, but they are expected to be ready to play.

Fantasy basketball picks and betting tips for Thursday

The NBA has five games on the schedule Thursday night, highlighted by a battle between the No. 2 and 3 seeds in the Western Conference.

The Houston Rockets have been arguably the hottest team in the NBA since the calendar turned to 2025, and are winners of 11 of their past 14 games. The Memphis Grizzlies, meanwhile, just had a six-game winning streak snapped in their last outing and host Houston after winning four straight games at home.

Let’s get into the fantasy options to stream and bets to make on Thursday.

Thursday’s Stream Team

Toumani Camara, Portland Trail Blazers (Available in 76.4% of ESPN leagues)

Camara missed a game last week due to illness but has been stellar since his return. He has averaged 14.8 PPG, 8.0 RPG, 1.8 3PG and 1.0 SPG in 35.8 MPG in his past four games.

Zach Edey, Memphis Grizzlies (55.1% available)

Edey is having one of the best weeks of his rookie campaign. He has almost averaged a double-double with excellent defensive numbers in his past three games: 13.7 PPG, 9.7 RPG, 3.0 BPG and 1.0 SPG in 23.7 MPG.

Jaden McDaniels, Minnesota Timberwolves (57.6% available)

McDaniels has been filling the stat sheet across the board in his past 10 outings: 14.1 PPG, 7.3 RPG, 1.9 SPG, 1.5 3PG and 1.3 BPG in 35.2 MPG. Those are all plus stats, and particularly valuable in category leagues where defensive stats and 3-pointers are scarcer commodities.

Dre’s bets for Thursday

Rockets +5.5 over Grizzlies (-115)

This is the fourth meeting of the season between these two teams. The Rockets have won all three of the previous matchups, including both games earlier this month. The Grizzlies are playing well, winners of six of their past seven, but the Rockets are on a four-game winning streak of their own and match up well against the Grizzlies. Keep an eye on the availability of Alperen Sengun (calf), but whether he plays or not, I’ll take the Rockets with the points.

De’Andre Hunter over 17.5 points (-115)

Hunter has averaged 19.1 PPG on the season, and after a slower start to 2025 he is back up to 18.2 PPG in his past five outings. Atlanta needs more from Hunter with Jalen Johnson done for the season, and he has played well against Cleveland this season. Fantasy Basketball Picks and Betting Tips for Thursday Night

Are you looking to dominate your fantasy basketball league or make some extra cash with some smart bets? Look no further! Here are some top picks and betting tips for Thursday night’s slate of NBA games:

1. Player to Watch: Giannis Antetokounmpo (Milwaukee Bucks) – The reigning MVP has been on fire lately, averaging 30.5 points, 13.8 rebounds, and 6.5 assists over his last four games. Look for him to have another big night against the New Orleans Pelicans.

2. Value Pick: Lonzo Ball (New Orleans Pelicans) – Ball has been playing well lately, posting two triple-doubles in his last five games. He’s a solid option at a lower price point and could provide some nice value for your fantasy lineup.

3. Betting Tip: Take the over on the total points in the game between the Houston Rockets and Brooklyn Nets. Both teams have high-powered offenses and struggle on defense, so expect a high-scoring affair.

4. Dark Horse Pick: De’Aaron Fox (Sacramento Kings) – Fox has been putting up solid numbers recently and could have a big game against the Memphis Grizzlies, who have struggled on defense this season.

Remember to always do your research and consider factors like injuries, matchups, and recent performance when making your fantasy basketball picks and bets. Good luck!
