About the Rebels (11-9, 5-4 Mountain West): After back-to-back losses last week, UNLV faces a tough rematch in Logan.

The Rebels’ most recent outing was a 75-73 loss to conference leader New Mexico on Saturday, which was preceded by a 63-61 defeat at the hands of one of the league’s worst teams in Wyoming.

That came after the Rebels had a breakout week by stacking a pair of upsets against Utah State (65-62), which was then ranked No. 22 in the country, and at San Diego State (76-68).

Star point guard Dedan Thomas Jr. missed potentially clutch shots in both of UNLV’s recent losses. A jumper would’ve tied the Cowboys at the buzzer, and a free throw could’ve made the same difference against New Mexico.

Thomas is leading the team with 16.0 points and 4.6 assists per game. Fourth-year coach Kevin Kruger and his players have emphasized that they’re still confident in giving Thomas the ball, no matter what.

“Our trust as a team for him is just up there,” forward Jalen Hill said as he gestured toward the ceiling at Tuesday’s practice. “Seeing how much he grows every day, he’s going to use (the misses to) just make him better.”

About the Aggies (18-2, 8-1): Led by first-year coach Jerrod Calhoun, Utah State sits in second place in the conference.

Guard Ian Martinez is fifth in the Mountain West at 17.0 points per game, and guard Mason Falslev averages 15.4.

The Aggies’ only loss in conference play this season came against the Rebels, and Kruger is expecting a challenge in light of their last meeting. He said the Aggies’ in-game adjustments against UNLV prevented them from ever getting “beat twice” by the same play, and they’ll likely counter even more effectively in their overall game plan.

Kruger also praised the Aggies’ home advantage, calling Dee Glenn Smith Spectrum one of the best gyms in college basketball.

“With the sunken floor and the fans right on top of you, I think it’s an awesome environment,” Kruger said. “So I just expect everything they did here with kind of another gear to it. The crowd really gets them going.”

After a tough loss on the road their last time out, Boise State looks much better today on their home court. They have jumped out to a quick 28-24 lead against Nevada.

What to Know

Nevada and Boise State are an even 5-5 against one another since February of 2021, but not for long. Both will face off in a Mountain West battle at 10:00 p.m. ET on Wednesday at ExtraMile Arena. Coming off a loss in a game the Wolf Pack were expected to win, they now face the more daunting task of proving themselves against unfavorable odds.

Nevada is headed into this one after the oddsmakers set last week’s over/under low at 130, but even that wound up being too high. Things couldn’t have gone much worse for them as they lost 69-50 to San Diego State on Saturday. The contest marked the Wolf Pack’s lowest-scoring match so far this season.

Even though the team lost, they still had their share of impressive performances. One of the best came from Kobe Sanders, who had 12 points in addition to eight rebounds. The dominant performance also gave him a new career-high in offensive rebounds (three).

Boise State has been a dominant force so far, but they’re in the middle of a mini-slump at the moment. They lost 75-72 to Colo. State on a last-minute jump shot From Jalen Lake. The close matchup was extra heartbreaking for the Broncos, who almost overcame a 17 point deficit.

Boise State’s loss shouldn’t obscure the performances of Alvaro Cardenas, who went 7 for 13 en route to 18 points plus seven assists and five rebounds, and Tyson Degenhart, who went 10 for 17 en route to 27 points plus five rebounds. Cardenas’ performance made up for a slower game against New Mexico two weeks ago. Javan Buchanan was another key player, earning 11 points plus two blocks.

Boise State struggled to get the ball back on offense and finished the game with only five offensive rebounds. That’s the fewest offensive rebounds they’ve posted since back in December of 2023.

Nevada’s defeat dropped their record down to 11-9. As for Boise State, their loss dropped their record down to 13-7.

Wednesday’s match is shaping up to be a masterclass in shooting: Nevada has been crazy accurate this season, having made 47.6% of their field goals per game. However, it’s not like Boise State struggles in that department as they’ve made 47.9% of their field goals this season. Given these competing strengths, it’ll be interesting to see how their clash plays out.

Not only did Nevada and Boise State lose their last games, but neither team managed to cover the spread. Looking forward, Boise State is the favorite in this one, as the experts expect to see them win by eight points. This contest might not be the best time to bet Nevada against the spread since they’ve let bettors down the last five times they’ve played.

Boise State is a big 8-point favorite against Nevada, according to the latest college basketball odds.

The line has drifted a bit towards the Broncos, as the game opened with the Broncos as a 6.5-point favorite.

The over/under is 137.5 points.

Syracuse Orang men’s basketball: predictions and poll vs Stanford

The Syracuse Orange (9-11, 3-6) make their first ACC trip to California to face the Stanford Cardinal (14-6, 6-3). Tip-off is late for us East Coast folks with an 11:00 pm start on ESPNU and here’s what we’re predicting:

Kevin: Stanford 78, Syracuse 71

There’s been some better offense from the Orange, but I don’t see how they contain Maxime Reynaud tonight. Reynaud is going to pull Eddie Lampkin away from the rim and if Syracuse tries to go smaller, he’ll likely go into the post on Davis and Majstorovic. To have a chance at this road win, Syracuse will need to limit turnovers and continue to hit shots from beyond the arc.

Dom: Stanford 85, Syracuse 75

A recent skid gives me pause Syracuse can come out with a win, and then there’s the fact Stanford enters this game on a three-game win streak with an 11-1 record at home on the year. The adjustment to head out to the West Coast is already tough enough, but equally as tough is trying to get enough stops against a Stanford offense that scores at a top-half mark in the ACC who also doesn’t turn the ball over. A scoring drought coming out of halftime sees the Orange fall behind and fail to recover.

Max: Stanford 82, Syracuse 68

Staying up late for this one will likely be a mistake. As Dom pointed out, the Cardinal have been nearly automatic at home and perfect in ACC play, beating their conference opponents by an average of 19.5 points over those four games. If this were in the Dome, it might be a different story, but the turnover bug will hit the Orange hard again in a double-digit road loss.

Sam: Stanford 75, Syracuse 67

I think both teams start sluggish in this one, but eventually, Raynaud takes over and Stanford pulls out the win.

JJ Starling is called for his first personal foul of the game, catching Jaylen Blakes in the paint. Blakes makes both free throws.

The Orange add two more field goal attempts, to no avail. Raynaud sinks his second triple of the game, now up to eight points against Syracuse.

Sellers tacks on another layup, picking up the and-one against Chris Bell. Sellers converts on the three-point play.

The Orange substitute Petar Majstorovic and Kyle Cuffe Jr. into the game in place of Starling and Jyare Davis. Cuffe gives Syracuse its first points of the game over seven minutes into the first half.

Stanford extends the lead to 20 points, with Sellers and Benny Gealer adding two more baskets in favor of the home squad.

Syracuse uses its first timeout of the game.

15:57 remaining: Stanford 7, Syracuse 0

Maxime Raynaud opens the game with a triple just before the shot clock expires. Stanford extended its lead out to seven with another jump shot from Raynaud and a layup from Oziyah Sellers.

Syracuse turned the ball over twice, and shot 0-for-4 from the field in the first four minutes.

Pregame

Kicking off the first ACC West Coast trip in program history, Syracuse basketball (9-11, 3-6 ACC) begins a two-game trip with a bout against Stanford (14-6, 6-3 ACC).

The Orange have lost three of their last four ACC matchups, including a four-point loss to Pittsburgh on Jan. 25. Syracuse’s losses to the Panthers and at Clemson on Jan. 22 put the Orange under .500 after reaching a 9-9 overall record midway through the month.

Eddie Lampkin picked up a season-high 23 rebounds against Pittsburgh, picking up his eighth double-double of the season. He leads the ACC in offensive boards per game, 3.5 per game, and his third in total rebounds with nine.

The 23-rebound effort was the first time an Orange picked up as many rebounds since Derrick Coleman did so against the Villanova Wildcats in 1990.

Stanford hosts Syracuse for the first time in program history, and it’s only the second time these two programs have faced off. The last battle was at Madison Square Garden in 2011 during the NIT Season Tip Off.

Stanford returns home after picking up wins over Florida State and Miami — now having won four of the last five games. Its lone loss in the same stretch was to Wake Forest on Jan. 15.

The Orange will have to manage the conference’s leading scorer, Maxime Raynaud, who averages 20.5 points per contest. Raynaud and Lampkin’s matchup in the paint will be a key element to this brand-new conference game.

Raynaud has two 30-point performances this season, both in nonconference game. Jaylen Blakes and Oziyah Sellers both average 14.6 points per game to sit behind Stanford’s top center.

Devin Booker’s charity helps renovate Phoenix basketball court

PHOENIX (AZFamily) — The Phoenix Suns and Devin Booker’s charity have made a north Phoenix park a little more beautiful with a renovated basketball court.

The official unveiling was held on Tuesday afternoon at Palomino Park, located on 30th Street just north of Greenway Road.

The remodeled court is now orange and black with white baselines, sidelines and three-point lines.

One side says, “Be Legendary,” while the other side says, “Booker.”

Different icons on the court are some of Booker’s favorite things, including the head of Booker’s dog Haven, a camcorder, his Nike shoes called the Book 1s, a Detroit hat and a lowrider car.

Before, the court was only concrete and missing the basketball hoops.

The court transformation was made possible through the Phoenix Suns/Phoenix Mercury Foundation and Booker’s Starting 5 initiative, a $2.5 million pledge to the community.

Booker didn’t speak at the event, but hundreds of people lined up to get a photo with him or shake his hand.

After the ceremony, kids got to enjoy the one-of-a-kind court, plus there were food trucks, vendors and other family-friendly activities.

Devin Booker, star player for the Phoenix Suns, is not only making waves on the basketball court but also in the community. His charity, the Devin Booker Starting Five Initiative, recently partnered with the City of Phoenix to renovate a local basketball court in need of some love.

The court, located in the heart of the city, had fallen into disrepair over the years. Cracks in the pavement, faded lines, and broken hoops made it nearly impossible for the local youth to enjoy playing basketball in a safe and inviting environment.

Thanks to Devin Booker’s generosity and dedication to giving back, the court received a much-needed makeover. The pavement was resurfaced, new backboards and hoops were installed, and fresh paint was applied to the lines. Men’s Basketball Back on the Road at Northwestern

PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Rutgers men’s basketball is back on the road for a midweek game on Wednesday night, traveling to Northwestern for a 9 p.m. tipoff on Wednesday night against the Wildcats on BTN. It will mark the fourth straight game away from Jersey Mike’s Arena (third true road game, plus a home game at Madison Square Garden).

The contest matches the two leading scorers in the league. Rutgers’ Ace Bailey (19.833 points per game) has a slight edge over Northwestern’s Nick Martinelli (19.75 ppg). The matchup also features the only two teams in the Big Ten to have two players among the top-10 in scoring: Rutgers (Ace Bailey, 1^st and Dylan Harper, 4^th) facing Northwestern (Martinelli, 2^nd, Brooks Barnhizer – 8^th).

Rutgers stands at 10-10 overall and 3-6 in the Big Ten following an 81-74 loss to No. 8/8 Michigan Sate last Saturday at Madison Square Garden. RU is now on a two-game losing streak, falling at Penn State (80-72) Monday as well, which had followed a two-game winning streak at Nebraska and against UCLA. RU is 8-2 at Jersey Mike’s Arena this season and 2-8 away from the venue.

RU’s opponents have scored over 80 points in three straight games and Big Ten foes average 77.1 points per game in the nine league contests this season. That mark is 10^th in the league and also exactly matches opponent Northwestern, who have also allowed 694 points through nine games.

In conference play, Ace Bailey averages 20.44 points per game and 9.0 rebounds. Both marks are third best of all players in a conference game. His 39 points against Indiana were the most of any player in a conference game this season. He also has the two highest performances for field goals made in a league game this season (16 vs. Indiana, 13 at Penn State).

Overall, Bailey leads the team at 19.8 points per game, 16^th in the nation and first in the Big Ten. Bailey has posted at least 17 points in five straight games and seven of the past eight contests. He averages 21.8 points per game over the past five and 23.9 over the past eight.

Classmate Dylan Harper is at 18.6 points per game, 41^st nationally and fourth in the Big Ten. In conference play, where Harper has been limited by illness and injury, he is second on the team at 12.8 points per game. Bailey has scored 29% of the team’s points in Big Ten play. Bailey and Harper combined have scored 45% of the team’s points in Big Ten play.

RU, who has never averaged more than 69 points per game under head coach Steve Pikiell is averaging 76.5 points per game this season. The last time RU averaged over 70 points per game was 2013-14 (71.1 ppg). RU has averaged over 70 points per game for a full season just that one time since the start of the 2001-02 season.

Freshmen Dylan Harper and Ace Bailey are approaching historic ranks for their scoring output among Rutgers’ freshmen, each on the verge of the top-7 scoring seasons by a true freshman Scarlet Knight.

Bailey (357 points) surpassed Ricky Shields last game to move into seventh place among all RU true freshmen scorers. He is just one point behind Geo Baker’s 17-18 season for sixth place. Harper (354 points) stands just behind him, one point behind Shields and four points behind Baker.
