Men’s Basketball Plays At St. Bonaventure Tuesday

DAYTON — The University of Dayton men’s basketball team will go on the road for a pair of tough games this week, starting Tuesday at St. Bonaventure.  Game time is 8 p.m. ET.

Dayton is 14-6 overall, and 4-3 in the Atlantic 10.  St. Bonaventure is 15-6 overall, and 3-5 in conference play.  The Flyers have won three straight.

UD never trailed in a 77-72 win over Saint Joseph’s on Saturday.  The Flyers led by as much 19 in the first half, and then made winning plays late after SJU had  cut the margin to four.  Nate Santo led all players in scoring (24 points) and rebounding (8).  Joining Santos in double figures were Amaël L’Etang (14 points), Javon Bennett (12) and Malachi Smith (12).  Smith also had eight assists.

The SBU game will be broadcast on WHIO Radio, televised on the YES Network, and streamed on ESPN+.  Streaming audio, video and live stats will be at DaytonFlyers.com.

#TRENDING

Nate Santos was named First Team Preseason All-Atlantic 10 after being named to the third team after last season.

• Santos’ 6-for-6 shooting performance from deep against Lehigh is the second-best in D-I.  It is also the second-best ever at UD, behind Shawn Haugh’s 8-for-8 in 1993-94.

Posh Alexander was named Second Team Preseason All-Atlantic 10 and to the Preseason All-Defensive Team.  Alexander is a fifth-year transfer who already has 1,000 career points and 500 career assists (1,439 and 588 respectively).  The fourth recruit from New York City in Anthony Grant‘s tenure at UD, he led the Big East in steals in each of the last four seasons (three at St. John’s and one at Butler).

Enoch Cheeks was also named A-10 Preseason All-Defensive Team.  He led the team in steals (40), was second in blocked shots (21), and was third in rebounding (4.7) in his first season at UD after transferring from Robert Morris.  The Providence, R.I. native was the 2023-24 winner of UD’s Steve McElvene Award.  Cheeks was consistently assigned the opponents’ top perimeter player on defense.  In the 25 games (out of 33) where the Flyer foe’s top player was a guard or wing, that player was held under his average 17 times. He started in all 33 games and averaged 8.1 points per game (9.5 in A-10 play).

• The Dayton roster includes five players who have earned all-conference recognition in their past – junior forward Nate Santos (Atlantic 10), junior Enoch Cheeks (Horizon League). junior Javon Bennett (Northeast Conference), redshirt junior Malachi Smith (Atlantic 10) and fifth-year senior Posh Alexander (Big East).

Amaël L’Etang was named the A-10 Rookie of the Week on Nov. 25.  He scored 11 points (4-6 FG) in 13 minutes against New Mexico State.

• Cheeks was named the A-10 Player of the Week on Dec. 2 after averaging 15.7 points and 7.0 rebounds against North Carolina, Iowa State and UConn in Maui.

• Cheeks is 13th in the A-10 in rebounding (6.5), fifth in steals (2.0), and eighth in 3-pt. FG% (.416, 37-89).  Of the top 15 A-10 rebounders, Cheeks is the shortest.

• Santos is fifth in the Atlantic 10 in 3-pt. FG% (.433, 45-104).

• Smith leads the A-10 in assists (6.0) and is third in assist-to-turnover ratio (2.8).  Nationally, he is tied for 22nd in assists per game.

Zed Key is eighth in FG% (.575, 61-104).  He is tied for 20th in D-I for most dunks (34).

• As a team, Dayton leads the Atlantic 10 in FG% (.476, 527-1106) and 3-pt. FG% (.366, 159-436) and is second in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.57).   The Flyers are 53rd in Division I in FG% and 56th in 3-pt. FG%.

• This is the Flyers’ 30th season in the Atlantic 10, and UD won its 300th A-10 game on Jan. 21 at Duquesne.

• UD ranked 20th in average attendance in NCAA Division I last season, averaging a capacity crowd of 13,407 fans a game in 2023-24.  Of schools in the top 25 in attendance, only Kansas, Purdue, Michigan State and UConn also sold out every game of the season.

• Dayton has already announced it has sold out every game for the upcoming 2024-25 season, including both exhibition games that have already been played.  This will be the fourth consecutive year UD has sold out every home game.  That streak is now 70 games.

• This is also the 55th anniversary season of UD Arena.  The Arena underwent a $76.2 million transformation project that was completed in time for the 2019-20 season.

• The Flyers are wearing “DJD” on their left shoulder strap in memory of Don Donoher.  Coach Donoher died last April at the age of 92.  He was the first man to coach his alma mater in the NCAA tournament after appearing in it as a player.  A member of the NABC College Basketball Hall of Fame, he is Dayton’s all-time winningest coach (437 wins).  He was the 2017 winner of the USBWA’s Dean Smith Award.

UP NEXT

• The Flyers continue on to Saint Louis on Friday at 7 p.m. ET.

• Dayton’s next home game is Tuesday, Feb. 4 when the Flyers host Davidson.

Two Duke Basketball One-And-Dones Land Rising Stars Honor

Former Duke basketball standouts Jared McCain and Dereck Lively II are in the 2025 Rising Stars player pool that the NBA announced on Tuesday. However, neither the Philadelphia 76ers rookie guard nor the Dallas Mavericks sophomore center will be on the court for the four-team tournament in the Golden State Warriors’ Chase Center on Feb. 14.

Even so, the fact they are among the 28 Rising Stars selections, consisting of 10 rookies, 10 sophomores, and seven G League talents, is a significant honor in itself.

McCain, who came off the board No. 16 overall at the 2024 NBA Draft following his sensational Duke basketball campaign, underwent surgery for a left lateral meniscus tear that he sustained in mid-December. Prior to the season-ending injury, the 20-year-old California native averaged 15.3 points, 2.6 assists, and 2.4 assists across 23 appearances, shooting 38.3 percent beyond the arc.

Despite being out of commission for roughly six weeks, McCain continues to lead all rookies with his eight 20-point performances and two 30-point efforts.

Meanwhile, Lively, who was part of the Rising Stars event as a rookie last year, has been sidelined the past two weeks while recovering from a stress fracture in his right ankle. The 20-year-old from Pennsylvania, a former lottery pick, will likely be out until the playoffs.

Through 32 outings this season, Lively is averaging 9.1 points, 7.8 rebounds, 2.6 assists, and 1.7 blocks.

Duke University has a reputation for producing top-tier basketball talent, and two former Blue Devils who entered the NBA as one-and-done players are continuing to make waves in the professional basketball world.

Zion Williamson and RJ Barrett, both former Duke standouts, have been named Rising Stars by the NBA for their exceptional play in the early stages of their careers. Williamson, the number one overall pick in the 2019 NBA Draft, has quickly become one of the most electrifying players in the league with his combination of size, athleticism, and skill. Barrett, the third overall pick in the same draft, has shown flashes of brilliance as a versatile scorer and playmaker for the New York Knicks.

Both players spent just one season at Duke before making the leap to the NBA, but their impact on the college basketball world was undeniable. Now, they are proving that they have what it takes to compete at the highest level of professional basketball.

As Duke continues to produce top-tier talent year after year, it’s clear that Williamson and Barrett are just the latest in a long line of Blue Devils who have what it takes to succeed in the NBA. Keep an eye on these rising stars as they continue to make their mark on the basketball world.

UK Basketball: John Calipari acknowledges his first time back at Rupp Arena will be emotional

The Arkansas Razorbacks have struggled this season. Conference play has not treated them well in John Calipari’s first year as head coach of the program. Arkansas is just one of three teams in the SEC with just one or no conference wins.

LSU has one (over the Hogs), and South Carolina has none to add more context to the above. The Razorbacks have been among the worst in the conference, losing to the Oklahoma Sooners this past Saturday and having dropped six of seven SEC battles.

Calipari, regardless of the record, will have the Razorbacks ready for a return to his former home this week when the Kentucky Wildcats host Arkansas.

“There will be some emotion walking into that building and really being in town. (I’ll) probably get together with some of my friends. They’re playing good. We’ve got our hands full. Let’s see what happens. They’re a good team. Mark’s doing a good job with them,” Calipari said after the Razorbacks’ game with Oklahoma on Saturday.

Calipari’s squad is going to have a difficult next battle as it will face the Wildcats at Rupp Arena, a place Calipari is clearly familiar with.

Kentucky, which has had its own programs in conference play, will have Tennessee on the road before then, so it should be wanting to get an easy home win under its belt if it loses Tuesday, a defeat that could mark its third straight SEC loss.

Let’s hope the Cats can come out on top in that one, and hopefully, those in Rupp Arena remember just what a job Calipari did in Lexington instead of tarnishing his legacy over his exodus.

As the Kentucky Wildcats gear up to face off against the Arkansas Razorbacks at Rupp Arena on Saturday, head coach John Calipari is preparing for an emotional return to the iconic basketball arena.

Calipari, who spent 12 seasons as the head coach of the Wildcats before parting ways with the team in 2021, will be stepping foot in Rupp Arena for the first time since his departure. The renowned coach, who led the Wildcats to numerous SEC titles and a national championship during his tenure, is sure to be met with a warm welcome from fans who have fond memories of his time at Kentucky.

In a recent interview, Calipari reflected on his time at Kentucky and expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to coach such a storied program. He acknowledged that his return to Rupp Arena will be emotional, but he is focused on the task at hand – leading his current team to victory against the Razorbacks.

Despite the inevitable emotions that will come with his return, Calipari remains focused on the game and the team in front of him. As he prepares to step onto the court at Rupp Arena once again, fans can expect a competitive and passionate performance from the legendary coach.

Stay tuned for what is sure to be a memorable game as John Calipari faces his old stomping grounds with a new team by his side.

Fantasy basketball picks and betting tips for Tuesday

There are four games on tap tonight, with six of the eight teams having been in the playoffs last season.

Things are a bit different so far this campaign, particularly for the Philadelphia 76ers. They come into this game in 11th place in the Eastern Conference, but with the same number of losses as Chicago and only 1.5 games behind the Bulls for the last play-in spot. They’ll be facing a Los Angeles Lakers team that’s right in the thick of the Western Conference playoffs race as the fifth seed, a game ahead of the sixth-place LA Clippers and a game behind the fourth-place Denver Nuggets.

Houston comes in on a high note, a day after overcoming a double-digit fourth quarter deficit to defeat the defending champion Boston Celtics. They go to Atlanta to face a Hawks team also on the second half of a back-to-back, after losing a competitive game to Minnesota despite missing both Trae Young and Jalen Johnson.

The other two games also feature one team on the second half of a double dip, with the Milwauee Bucks returning to Damian Lillard’s old stomping grounds to face the Portland Trail Blazers. Meanwhile, Utah lost to the Bucks last night, and heads further west to challenge the struggling Golden State Warriors.

Tuesday’s Stream Team

Toumani Camara, Portland Trail Blazers (available in 77.7 of ESPN leagues): Camara can be up and down, but for the most part has played strong since the end of 2024. Since Dec. 30, he has averaged 2.4 combined steals and blocks and 1.6 3-pointers over 14 games. In his last outing, he dropped 24 points with nine boards and four assists.

Onyeka Okongwu, Atlanta Hawks (52.7% available): Okongwu has started five straight games for the Hawks, and in his last eight has averaged a solid 15.4 PPG and 11.6 RPG. He has also averaged 1.0 blocks, 1.5 steals and 1.5 3-pointers during that stretch.

Keyonte George, Utah Jazz (62.9% available): George has come off the bench in his last two games, but is still playing 30+ minutes and producing starting-caliber numbers. In eight games since the calendar turned to 2025, George has averaged a strong 17.4 PPG and 6.1 APG with almost three 3-pointers and a steal in 32 MPG.

Dre’s bets for Tuesday

Amen Thompson (HOU) to record 35+ total points, rebounds and assists (+105) In the wake of his monster effort on Monday, in which he dropped 33 points including the game-winning shot, Thompson said “I feel like Kobe”. Thompson is playing the best basketball of his young career, and is contributing across the board. He has started his last 10 games, averaging 19.2 PPG, 11.6 RPG and 4.4 APG during that stretch. In those 10 games, he has produced 35+ PRA seven times, including in each of his last three games.

Anthony Davis (LAL) over 26.5 points (-125) Davis is on the second half of a back-to-back, but he is also right in the middle of a heater. He dropped a season-high 42 points (as well as a season-high 23 rebounds) on Monday, and has averaged 32.8 PPG in his last four outings. He’ll be facing a 76ers squad missing Joel Embiid for the second time this season; in the first meeting he scored 31 points.

Damian Lillard (MIL) over 27.5 points (-120) Lillard is in the midst of one of his most consistent scoring sprees since joining the Bucks. He has scored at least 22 points in 11 straight games, averaging 27.3 PPG during that span, but his scoring is accelerating. He has put up 29.0 PPG in his last six games, and 31.0 PPG in his last three. He will be facing his former squad, the Trail Blazers, which struggle on defense and are allowing the fourth-most fantasy points to opposing point guards.

Jazz (+10.5 points) over Warriors (-105) The Warriors have lost 20 of their last 30 games. During that 30-game span, they have won only two games by more than 10 points. The Jazz have one of the worst records and scoring margins in the NBA, but on average they are outscored by only 7.3 PPG. And the Warriors, for most of the season, have been a below average team that would be expected to outscore the Jazz by even less than those 7.3 points.
