Arizona vs. Iowa State prediction, odds, spread: 2025 college basketball picks, Jan. 27 bets by proven model

The 2024-25 college basketball season continues on Monday and the action for the night will wrap up with a high-profile Big 12 matchup between the Arizona Wildcats and the Iowa State Cyclones. Arizona will host and is 13-6 on the season with a 7-1 record in conference play while No. 3 Iowa State is 17-2 overall and is also 7-1 in the league. Both of these programs were No. 2 seeds in last year’s NCAA tournament and were knocked out in the Sweet 16 and now the powers will begin a new era as rivals in the Big 12 after Arizona left the Pac-12 this offseason.

Tipoff from the McKale Memorial Center in Tucson, Ariz., is set for 10:30 p.m. ET. The Wildcats are favored by 2.5 points in the latest Arizona vs. Iowa State odds from SportsLine consensus, and the over/under is 152.5 points. Before entering any Iowa State vs. Arizona picks, check out the college basketball predictions from the SportsLine Projection Model.

The model simulates every Division 1 college basketball game 10,000 times. It enters Week 13 of the 2024-25 season on a 202-142 betting roll (+2468) on all top-rated college basketball picks dating back to 2023. Anyone following at sportsbooks and on betting apps could have seen huge returns.

Why you should back Arizona

After winning the Pac-12 in its final season, Arizona prepped for the Big 12 with a difficult non-conference schedule and got off to a sluggish 4-5 start. However, the Wildcats have rebounded to win seven of their first eight in Big 12 play and they’re coming off a 78-63 win over Colorado on Saturday.

Anthony Dell’Orso led the team with 20 points in the victory and Tobe Awaka put in a hard day’s work on the glass with 15 rebounds. Arizona has now covered the spread in five of its last seven games and the Tommy Lloyd’s group is also on a seven-game home winning streak. See which team to pick here.

Why you should back Iowa State

The Cyclones are coming off a 29-win season where they finished second in the Big 12 and made a strong NCAA tournament run, but T.J. Otzelberger’s squad has even loftier ambitions for 2024-25 and they’re off to a great start. They had a solid showing at the Maui Invitational — their only loss came in a one-possession game against No. 1 Auburn — and also had a home win over No. 5 Marquette.

Now they’re tied for second in the Big 12 standings with the Wildcats (behind only Houston) and they’re coming off a 76-61 win over Arizona State in Tempe on Saturday. Curtis Jones dropped 33 points in the victory and Joshua Jefferson had a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds. See which team to pick here.

How to make Arizona vs. Iowa State picks

SportsLine’s model is going Under on the total, predicting 151 points on average. It also says one side of the spread hits over 50% of the time. You can only get the pick at SportsLine.

So who wins Iowa State vs. Arizona, and which side of the spread hits over 50% of the time? Visit SportsLine now to see which side of the spread to jump on, all from the advanced model that is up nearly $2,500 on its college basketball picks dating back to 2023, and find out.

The highly anticipated matchup between Arizona and Iowa State is set to take place on January 27, and fans are buzzing with excitement. Both teams have had strong seasons so far, making this game a must-watch for college basketball enthusiasts.

According to odds and spread predictions, Arizona is favored to win this game. The Wildcats have been on a hot streak lately, showcasing their strong offense and solid defense. Iowa State, on the other hand, has also been performing well this season, but may have a tougher time against Arizona’s formidable lineup.

If you’re looking to place bets on this game, a proven model suggests that Arizona is the safer pick. However, college basketball is known for its unpredictability, so anything can happen on game day. Be sure to tune in to see how this exciting matchup unfolds.

Duke basketball zone helps Blue Devils avoid upset at Wake Forest

In a thrilling matchup against Wake Forest, Duke basketball relied on their zone defense to secure a crucial win and avoid an upset on the road. Despite facing a scrappy Demon Deacons team, the Blue Devils were able to hold their ground and come out on top thanks to their strong defensive effort.

The zone defense implemented by Duke proved to be effective in limiting Wake Forest’s scoring opportunities and forcing turnovers. The Blue Devils were able to disrupt the Demon Deacons’ offense and create fast break opportunities of their own, ultimately giving them the edge in a tight contest.

Key players like Paolo Banchero and Wendell Moore Jr. stepped up on both ends of the floor, contributing not only offensively but also making crucial defensive plays to help secure the victory. The Blue Devils’ ability to adapt and execute their defensive game plan was instrumental in avoiding a potential upset and coming out with a hard-fought win.

As Duke continues their journey through conference play, their strong showing on defense against Wake Forest serves as a reminder of their potential to compete at a high level and make a deep run in the postseason. With their zone defense proving to be a valuable asset, the Blue Devils will look to build on this win and continue their success as they aim for championship glory.

NC State vs Duke Prediction, Picks & Odds for Tonight’s College Basketball Game

Duke’s offense tends to disappear for stretches, making the 21-point spread a tough sell. NC State plays solid defense and can put up a fight, but this has all the makings of an Under.

A classic ACC rivalry opens what will be a busy week for the Duke Blue Devils, hosting the North Carolina State Wolfpack tonight at Cameron Indoor Stadium.

Duke rides a 13-game winning streak into this matchup and the point spread reflects that dominance, with the Blue Devils laying 22 points. However, the Wolfpack tend to punch up at their Tobacco Road foes and lean into their defense and plodding pace to keep it competitive, as my NC State vs Duke predictions indicate.

Here are my best college basketball picks for this 8:30 p.m. ET tip on Monday, January 27 on ESPN.

NC State vs Duke prediction

My best bet
Under 134.5 (-110 at bet365)

My analysis

Duke is on track for a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament and can put some notable ticks on its resume this week, with big games against NC State and North Carolina.

To keep those wins coming, the Blue Devils need to tighten the bolts on an offense that seems to disappear at the worst times. Those sudden lulls almost cost Duke against the Wake Forest Demon Deacons on Saturday.

The offense went cold in the second half, opening the door for the Demon Deacons to go on a 17-1 run. Duke countered in the closing minutes, with super freshman Cooper Flagg taking over, winning 63-56 — a final score that fell well Under the closing total of 136 points.

Tonight’s total is a touch shorter, sitting at 134.5 with the Dukies coming back to Cameron. However, North Carolina State doesn’t bend much on defense when it comes to these Carolina clashes.

The Wolfpack lug a four-game losing skid to Durham but continue to play competitive basketball. North Carolina State’s last five games have had a margin of six points or less, with the Wolfpack leaning into their defense. The Under is 4-1 O/U in those contests.

North Carolina State doesn’t give up easy buckets, rating out among the better defenses at protecting the rim and slowing down teams in transition. It forces foes into a half-court set and to work the ball around, chewing up an average of 19 seconds per opponent’s possession (fourth-most in the country).

That’s fine with Jon Scheyer’s squad. Duke thrives in the half-court and averages more than 17 seconds per possession, using ball movement to find spot-up shooters.

The sticky part is that the Blue Devils haven’t been the most consistent shooting team, especially from beyond the arc, over the past four games. Outside of a hot day against Miami (17-for-32), Duke is a collective 31% from distance in the other three showings.

Duke and NC State played Under in all three meetings last season and are 1-6 O/U in head-to-head matchups since 2020-21. Game projections call for a final combined score between 130 and 131 points, which gives us plenty of headroom for the Under 134.5.

Cooper Flagg pick: Re-cooping boards

My best bet
Cooper Flagg Over 7.5 rebounds (-125 at bet365)

My analysis

The Wolfpack don’t give up many easy looks, which means Duke will have to settle for some less-than-ideal attempts late into the shot clock.

Unfortunately for NC State, it’s not great at keeping opponents off the glass.

North Carolina State ranks 280th in rebound rate and has a glaring weakness when it comes to opponents’ offensive rebounds, sitting 319th in offensive rebound rate allowed and watching their last three foes collect almost 11 offensive boards per game.

Flagg is averaging eight rebounds a night in his first year in Durham, with 1.6 of those coming on the offensive glass. His player projections for Monday sit above eight rebounds and I project an even greater number of boards, given the matchup.

NC State vs Duke same-game parlay (SGP)

Under 134.5

Cooper Flagg Over 7.5 rebounds

Duke moneyline

Two methodical offenses will chew up a lot of the shot clock in a rivalry that has produced five straight Under results.

Flagg crashes the glass against a soft Wolfpack frontcourt and goes for eight or more boards.

The Blue Devils should be able to hold off the pesky Wolfpack for another win on their resume even if they can’t cover the lofty spread.

Brooklyn Nets vs Sacramento Kings preview: Monday night basketball

A special night for an all time great. On Saturday night, the Brooklyn Nets retired Vince Carter’s jersey as his #15 ascended to the Barclays Center rafters. It was the perfect end to a perfect week celebrating one of the franchise’s greatest players. The team itself played and lost against the Miami Heat, but they got the main thing right.

The opponent tonight is, somehow, still in the playoff chase. It’s been a long year for the Sacramento Kings, but coming into this game they are in the tenth and final spot for the postseason. They didn’t help the cause on Saturday night as they got knocked around by the New York Knicks at MSG.

Where to follow the game

YES Network on TV. WFAN on radio. Tip after 7:30 p.m. ET.

The Brooklyn Nets will commemorate the Chinese New Year — the Year of the Snake — tonight as well. The Chinese New Year game is part of the Nets Unite platform and will include unique food, fashion and culture. The festivities also include a red envelope giveaway for every fan in attendance, a Chinese tradition wishing good fortune for the new year.

Injuries

No Cam Thomas, Cam Johnson, Bojan Bogdanovic, Trendon Watford, Maxwell Lewis, and DeAnthony Melton. Ben Simmons is questionable.

All clear on the report for Sacto.

The game

Brooklyn won the first game in November, Jordi Fernandez’s homecoming. This is the last meeting between the two teams this season.

Since the last time we saw Sacramento, they underwent a big change. After a disastrous loss to the Detroit Pistons, the team fired Mike Brown the next day. Being fired is one thing, but being fired after running practice, doing media availability, and traveling on the way to Los Angeles for a game against the Lakers is what pissed everyone off. Former Kings coach Michael Malone didn’t hold back when he talked about the firing:

“So I’m not surprised that Mike Brown got fired, because I got fired by the same person. And what really pissed me off about it was the fact that [the Kings] lost last night, fifth game in a row, I believe. Tough loss, fouling a jump shooter,” said Malone, the Nuggets coach. “They had practiced this morning. He does his media, and he’s in his car going to the airport to fly to L.A. and they call him on the phone [and tell him he’s fired]. No class. No balls. That’s what I’ll say about that.”

Jesus. The reputation of Kings’ management is in the dirt, but something funny happened along the way. The team got good again! Under first year head coach and former King fan favorite Doug Christie, Sacramento has gotten their groove back. Since the firing, the Kings have gone 10-4, fourth best record in the NBA during that time span. It appears Christie is pushing all the right buttons, and according to Keon Ellis, he’s been a major breath of fresh air:

“I think it just has been easier because there are not a lot of rules, honestly. The only real staple is going out there and playing hard, playing for each other. The offense, the defense is just playing aggressive and playing our game.

“He’s preached a lot of communication. On the defensive end, if we’re blitzing someone just talk about whatever we are doing. We run a bunch of different things, but it doesn’t matter as long as we’re communicating and getting through it, that’s all that matters. And then on the offensive end, you have the best players in the game so you’re giving them the ball.

“I think that was the first message he told us is it’s going to get real simple. Late game or whatever throughout the stretch, [De’Aaron] Fox you get it, we’re running this play, Deebo [DeRozan] you get it, whoever has it you guys are pros, you guys are the players out there. I’m going to give you the ball and you are going to go out there and make it happen. So, I think he just puts it all on us and I think he just wants us to go out there and play hard and play for each other.”

There’s still a lot of season to go, and if the Kings are able to make something shake in the postseason, maybe the messy ass breakup would have been worth it.

In the meantime, the Nets will have their hands full with Domantas Sabonis. Sabonis leads the NBA in rebounding at 14 a night and grabs almost four offensive boards a night. If you don’t put a body on him and match his physicality, he’s bound to do something like this

Hope the guys have been hitting the weights extra hard. We’ll see how Nic Claxton is able to handle the former All Star on the inside. Clax tends to look more like himself when he’s set up in great position to score and fed close to the rim. He and Noah Clowney will have to work incredibly hard to keep Sabonis off the glass and limit those second and third chance opportunities. If they don’t, Sabonis is a good bet to earn his seventh triple double of the season.

If the game gets close, the Kings will hand the reins over to the midrange maestro. DeMar DeRozan has been pretty solid in his first year with the Kings, and when the game is close late, Christie can put the rock in his hands and trust him to get to his spots. For all great teams, you need at least two players who can get their own shot, especially in crunch time. Sacramento has that. Now can they do everything else needed to be a great team? We shall see.

Player to watch: De’Aaron Fox

Recently, New York Liberty star Breanna Stewart was on Candace Parker’s the Trophy Room show. Stewie was discussing the pressure of being the best player on a team and taking responsibility when things don’t go according to plan, and she said something pretty fascinating:

“Taking ownership came from coach [Geno] Auriemma, from UCONN. I just remember having a conversation with him at one point throughout my career and he was like “No matter what happens on the court, it’s your fault…

“But as you get older, you understand why things are said that way. No matter what was happening in that game, I can take it on me because I can take it…”

That’s the rule when you’re the best player. When things go right, you get the credit and acknowledgement as the star you are. When you lose, you’re the first person we turn to when things go wrong. And when people suspect you of being the person that helped get the coach fired, well… we’re gonna ask you all kinds of questions

“I wouldn’t use the word ‘guilt.’ That’s the nature of the job that we have. Obviously, him signing his extension this summer, we thought we would be together a whole lot longer.

But that’s the decision that they made. But at the end of the day, too, he’s still getting paid. A great part of being an NBA player, being an NBA coach is those things can happen, but contracts are guaranteed.”

I mean he’s right, but yeesh. But when you talk like that, you better ball. Fox has held up his end of the bargain for the most part. Since the firing, he’s averaging around 22/5/6 on 42/28/87 shooting splits. Fox has been dealing with finger injuries on his left hand since training camp and is now dealing with a sprained right thumb. He’s gonna keep toughing it out, and considering how deep in the hole the Kings put themselves in, he’s gotta give them as much as he can.

D’Angelo Russell is back after a brief injury absence, and when he’s able to draw the defense’s attention, good things happen

The partnership between he and Claxton will be something to watch closely as we go through the rest of this season. For Brooklyn tonight, they’ll do their best to try and find their way into the paint. In January, the Kings are only allowing teams to shoot 63.6 percent in the restricted area. It’s a marked improvement from earlier in the season when they allowed teams to shoot close to 70 percent in that part of the court. Russell’s ability to probe defenses and find his way to the cup will help keep the Nets in it.

From the Vault

On Saturday, D’Angelo’s “Voodooturned 25 years old. It was lauded immediately upon release and has grown in stature over the years. With that in mind, let’s pull up two tracks before we hit the road
