Men’s college basketball Top 25: Auburn, Texas Tech and more defenses doing damage

In honor of the GOAT Patrick Mahomes, Texas Tech returns to this week’s Top 25.

The Red Raiders (15-4, 6-2 Big 12) have yet to beat another team on my ballot, but they are metrics darlings, ranking 11th at KenPom, 11th in the NET, 12th at Bart Torvik and ninth at Evan Miya after beating Oklahoma state 64-54 on Sunday.

Texas Tech head coach Grant McCasland had an awesome offseason. He made a great hire, convincing Wyoming head coach Jeff Linder to take an assistant role running the Red Raiders’ offense. Then he signed point guard Christian Anderson, who decommitted from Michigan after Juwan Howard was fired. In a year with awesome freshmen grabbing headlines across the country, Anderson has quietly been a big part of Texas Tech’s success, averaging 9.5 points and shooting 42.9 percent from 3.

It’s a big week for the Red Raiders, with a home game against TCU followed by a road trip to Houston next Saturday. And they get two weeks to revel in the brilliance of their most famous alum. Go Chiefs.

Now let’s honor some awesome defenses…

Reminder: Below my Top 25, I give nuggets on an unspecified number of teams each week. So when a team appears in the table but not in the text below, that’s why. Scroll on for notes on Auburn, Duke, Iowa State, Houston, Michigan State, Kansas, St. John’s and Louisville.

Midseason All-America team: Cooper Flagg, Johni Broome, Kam Jones and more

No. 1 Auburn

The Tigers rank third in opponent assist rate, and their defensive discipline was on point in Saturday’s 53-51 win over Tennessee. When the ball handler gets near the rim, most defenders turn, look at the ball and gravitate toward it. Watch what Auburn does when Zakai Zeigler does a Nash dribble (keeping his dribble alive underneath the basket):

Similarly, when Igor Milicic has a one-on-one in the post, the Tigers put their faith in Chaney Johnson and stick to their assignments:

Auburn’s impressive defensive communication and awareness off the ball was on display on the second-to-last possession of the game when Johni Broome and Tahaad Pettiford switched a ball screen. Watch how Johnson (No. 31) realized immediately that Pettiford was getting switched onto 6-foot-11 Felix Okpara and communicated to Pettiford to take his man on the perimeter:

When Pettiford ran Milicic off the line, Johnson was there again to save the day with a contest at the rim, and Broome and Chaz Baker-Mazara were there to help the helper. With the best offense in college basketball, Auburn hasn’t had to rely on its defense much this year, but Bruce Pearl’s group is capable of winning games on that end. And now that Broome is back,  the offense will inevitably get rolling again.

No. 2 Duke

Cooper Flagg is putting together a historic January, averaging 25 points, 7.6 rebounds and 5.2 assists in six games. To capture the freshman’s ascension, let’s take a look at the KenPom Player of the Year rankings, which attempt to quantity both offensive and defensive impact. Ken Pomeroy has been giving out the kPOY since 2010-11, and if the season ended today, Flagg would be right on Frank Kaminsky’s heels for the best season of the last 15 years.

kPOY rating

Frank Kaminsky (2014-15)

2.794

Cooper Flagg (2024-25)

2.749

Zach Edey (2023-24)

2.699

Russ Smith (2012-13)

2.636

Johni Broome (2024-25)

Broome would win the award most seasons with the year he is having, but Flagg is expanding the gap and only seems to be getting better as the season progresses.

No. 3 Iowa State

Coming into this season, T.J. Otzelberger’s Cyclones teams were 0-6 in games when their opponent’s turnover rate was below 17 percent. In both their losses this season, West Virginia and Auburn had fewer than 17 percent of possessions end in a turnover. But thanks to its elite offense, Iowa State has also won four times this year with an opponent turnover rate under that magic number.

But this team still thrives on turnovers, and it got back to its identity this week, forcing 37 turnovers in two wins after forcing just nine turnovers in a 64-57 loss to West Virginia on Jan. 18.

This has been Otzelberger’s worst Iowa State team at forcing turnovers; its turnover rate of 22.2 percent ranks 22nd nationally. That is still very good, but Otzelberger’s first three teams ranked sixth, second and second. The offense was awesome too this week — the Clones hung 108 on UCF.

No. 6 Houston

Houston was one of the unluckiest teams in college basketball heading into the weekend. The Cougars now stand at 290th in Ken Pomeroy’s luck metric, and they likely made a big leap after their 92-86 win against Kansas in double-overtime at Allen Fieldhouse. (Pomeroy does not archive the luck data.) The Coogs held late leads in all three of their losses this season, with the following peak win probabilities in each:

  • Nov. 9 vs. Auburn: 85.9 percent (74-69 loss)
  • No. 26 vs. Alabama: 90.1 percent (85-80 loss in OT)
  • Nov. 30 vs. San Diego State: 94.6 percent (73-70 loss in OT)

With 20 seconds left in Saturday’s first overtime, Houston had a 0.4 percent chance to win. Even Pomeroy cannot fully quantify the odds when you’re playing against Bill Self inside Allen Fieldhouse. Self was 26-12 all-time in overtime games as Kansas’ coach and 12-2 at home.

Adding to the zaniness: Houston made the miraculous comeback by forcing two key Kansas turnovers with its full-court press. Coming into the game, Houston had pressed on only six possessions all season.

Now the Cougars (16-3, 8-0 Big 12) are in prime position to win a second consecutive Big 12 title. They get their biggest challenger, Iowa State (17-2, 7-1 Big 12), at home, and the Cyclones still have to go to Allen Fieldhouse themselves. The win was also huge for Houston’s NCAA Tournament seeding. While the computers love the Coogs — third at the NET, third at KenPom, first at Bart Torvik and first at Evan Miya — their resume was missing a Quad 1 win. They have one now.

No. 8 Michigan State

It’s pretty amazing what Michigan State has been able to do this season by relying almost exclusively on scoring inside the 3-point line. The Spartans rank 35th out of Division I’s 364 teams in 2-point field goal percentage at 56.4 percent. Most teams that shoot a high percentage inside the arc usually do so thanks to the spacing they create by spreading the floor with shooters. Among the top 50 2-point shooting teams, Michigan State is the only one that ranks outside the nation’s top 300 in 3-point rate. (The Spartans attempt 31.9 percent of their shots from 3, ranking 335th in 3-point rate.) The Spartans make only 28.7 percent of their 3s, which ranks 347th; they’re one of only two teams in the top 80 in 2-point field goal percentage that shoots below 30 percent from 3. The Spartans have shot it slightly better in Big Ten play, where they’ve made 33.9 percent of their 3s, which is a big reason why they’ve been able to win 12 straight games.

No. 11 Kansas

The Jayhawks appeared to have Saturday’s game against Houston won several times, but if they can get pass the misery, they might have turned a corner on Saturday.

The Hunter Dickinson-Flory Bidunga pairing is taking off. With Houston doubling Dickinson on every catch in the post, Bill Self decided to mostly keep Dickinson on the perimeter and used him in the pick-and-roll. But about two-thirds of the way through the game, Self decided to move Dickinson to the blocks and invite a double team. After the under-12 timeout, Kansas ran a post pin play for Dickinson, and as soon as he caught it, he passed to a cutting Bidunga for a lay-in:

Self also had Bidunga set a majority of the ball screens and used Dickinson to give the guards an outlet to throw the ball ahead after the ball screen, then let Dickinson make reads on the roll. That, too, worked beautifully:

Bidunga can get out of a ball screen and get to the rim so quickly that it really puts the defense in a jam, and Dickinson’s passing was phenomenal. He made decisions quickly and found the open guy every time. And Rylan Griffen making shots — he buried five 3s en route to 17 points off the bench— put Houston’s defense in a predicament. In that clip above, Emanuel Sharp, who is guarding Griffen in the left corner, is technically the low man in pick-and-roll coverage and should have been there to help on the roller, but he was worried about Griffen.

This is what Kansas’ offense was supposed to look like when it added Griffen and Zeke Mayo from the transfer portal in the offseason. And from that under-12 timeout on, with Dickinson and Bidunga on the floor together, Kansas scored 32 points on 23 possessions (1.39 points per possession) against a defense that came in No. 1 in adjusted efficiency. What turned the game was Bidunga fouling out 16 seconds into the second overtime. KU might have lost its chance at a Big 12 title, but I’d bet Big 12 teams are fearing the Bidunga-Dickinson duo’s newfound chemistry.

No. 12 St. John’s

The Johnnies currently have the best in-conference defensive efficiency of any Big East team since the league reformed in 2013-14, with plenty of cushion. They are allowing just 89.1 points per 100 possessions, compared to Villanova’s 2016 title team that allowed 95.3.

When St. John’s tightens the screws, finding a decent look is exhausting. Xavier led St. John’s 50-34 with 17 minutes left on Wednesday. I charted the defensive possessions from that point forward:

Quality shots Contested shots Turnovers

Xavier

6-11

1-17

The Musketeers scored 21 points on 35 possessions (0.6 PPP) over that stretch. The reason it’s so hard to find a quality look is that St. John’s can switch everything.

The Johnnies do a great job of taking away space as soon as the switch is made. This team can struggle to score, but it is comfortable playing from behind and believing its defense will get it back in the game.

Pat Kelsey’s teams have always shot a lot of 3s, but he is leaning into a 3-point-happy offense in Year 1 at Louisville, especially now that because of injuries the Cards are playing four perimeter players a majority of the time. After putting up 45 3s in a 98-73 win at SMU last Tuesday, Louisville is now attempting 51.2 percent of its shots from deep and could eventually approach 2019 Villanova’s mark for the highest 3-point rate by a high-major team.

As the college basketball season heats up, several teams are making a statement with their stifling defense. Auburn and Texas Tech are two of the top teams in the country when it comes to shutting down opponents, but they are not alone in their defensive prowess.

Auburn currently sits at No. 1 in the AP Top 25 poll, and a big reason for their success has been their defense. The Tigers are holding opponents to just 37.6% shooting from the field, which ranks 8th in the nation. They are also forcing turnovers at a high rate, averaging 9.7 steals per game.

Texas Tech, meanwhile, is ranked No. 14 in the country and is also making a strong case for one of the top defensive teams in the nation. The Red Raiders are holding opponents to just 38.1% shooting from the field and are forcing turnovers on 24.4% of possessions, which ranks 4th in the country.

But it’s not just Auburn and Texas Tech that are excelling on the defensive end. Teams like Baylor, Tennessee, and Houston are also making a name for themselves with their defensive prowess. Baylor is holding opponents to just 57.5 points per game, while Tennessee is forcing turnovers on 23.1% of possessions.

As we head into the heart of conference play and eventually March Madness, it will be interesting to see which teams can continue to dominate on the defensive end. With so many talented teams excelling on defense, it’s shaping up to be an exciting and competitive college basketball season.

Men’s basketball AP poll: Johni Broome’s return powers Auburn past Tennessee to keep No. 1 spot

Auburn held its edge over the rest of the SEC once again this past week. (John Reed-Imagn Images)

Auburn, Alabama and Florida all stuck around at the top of the poll again this week. But with the way things are going throughout the conference, it feels like it’s only a matter of time before the SEC flips over on itself.

Here’s everything you missed in Week 12 of the college basketball season, and the latest Associated Press men’s basketball poll.

Johni Broome is back, and Auburn is still on top of the SEC.

The Tigers picked up their 11th straight win on Saturday night when they beat Tennessee 53-51. It marked Broome’s first game back from an ankle injury. He had a team-high 16 points and 13 rebounds off the bench in the win, which marked the lowest point total the Tigers have had all year.

Though it wasn’t a great offensive showing — Auburn went just 3-of-20 from the 3-point line — it was a win nonetheless. Auburn held onto the No. 1 ranking in this week’s poll and kept its lead in what has been an otherwise chaotic stretch of conference play. It’ll travel to LSU on Wednesday before a road game against No. 23 Ole Miss on Saturday.

The top five in this week’s poll didn’t change, with Duke, Iowa State, Alabama and Florida all holding strong. Cooper Flagg and the Blue Devils, who will host North Carolina this weekend, grabbed their 13th straight win on Saturday by beating Wake Forest on the road. The Cyclones survived a tight road win over Arizona State on Saturday, too.

Back in the SEC, the Crimson Tide struggled to get past LSU and star Mark Sears sat out of the second half of Saturday’s game after he was held scoreless in the first 20 minutes. The Gators, still 18-2, will turn around and take on Tennessee — which dropped two spots to No. 8 — on Saturday. The Vols will have to go up against Kentucky before that game on Tuesday night.

The Wildcats dropped their second straight game this past week, too. After falling to Alabama, they lost on the road at Vanderbilt — which prompted yet another court storm and fine from Commodores fans in Nashville. The Wildcats fell to No. 12 this week as a result.

Unranked Texas stunned Texas A&M 70-69 with a late game-winner in Austin on Saturday. The Aggies, despite losing three of their last five, held at No. 13.

Still, the SEC has an incredible 10 teams ranked in the polls this week. Even though things won’t be getting any easier — the Crimson Tide will close the regular season with seven straight ranked games, including two against Auburn, for example — the conference is clearly far and above the rest of the country.

In a highly anticipated matchup, Auburn’s Johni Broome made his return to the court and led the Tigers to a thrilling victory over Tennessee, solidifying their hold on the No. 1 spot in the latest Men’s basketball AP poll.

Broome, who had been sidelined with an injury, showed no signs of rust as he put up a dominant performance, scoring a game-high 25 points and grabbing 12 rebounds to lead Auburn to a 78-72 win over the Volunteers.

The victory extended Auburn’s winning streak to 12 games and improved their record to 20-1 on the season, further cementing their status as the team to beat in college basketball.

Despite a valiant effort from Tennessee, led by standout guard Kennedy Chandler, the Volunteers were unable to overcome Broome’s impact on both ends of the court. Auburn’s suffocating defense and balanced scoring attack proved to be too much for Tennessee to handle.

With Broome back in the lineup and playing at an elite level, Auburn looks poised to make a deep run in the upcoming NCAA tournament. The Tigers’ combination of talent, depth, and experience make them a formidable opponent for any team in the country.

As the regular season winds down and conference tournaments loom on the horizon, Auburn remains the team to beat in the Men’s basketball AP poll. With Broome leading the way, the Tigers are primed for a championship run and have their sights set on cutting down the nets in March.

South Carolina women’s basketball sticks at No. 2 spot in ranking despite country’s best resume

South Carolina women’s basketball added another top 5 victory this weekend (a 66-56 smothering of the LSU Tigers) to move their overall record to 19-1 and their conference mark to a perfect 7-0. Since losing to UCLA back in November, the Gamecocks have been the country’s most impressive team. Because of their 14-game win streak (with each victory coming by double-digit points), Dawn Staley’s squad is closing the gap on the Bruins at the top of the AP top 25.

[Win tickets: South Carolina-Auburn WBB]

When the Associated Press updated its rankings on Monday, South Carolina remained at No. 2. Once again, the Gamecocks earned one first-place vote despite growing sentiment nationally that they are the most impressive group in the country. Last week, USC picked up just one first-place vote, as well. However, this week, Notre Dame’s two first-place votes disappeared. Both votes moved over to UCLA.

UCLA has held onto the country’s top spot for the last two months, and the Bruins deserve it. Cori Close’s team remains undefeated (the only team in college basketball with that distinction), beat the Gamecocks head-to-head, and dispatched a top-10 Maryland team by double figures on Sunday.

Even so, South Carolina women’s basketball owns the best resume in the country.

The Gamecocks lead the country with both nine Quad 1 victories and 12 combined Quad 1 and Quad 2 wins. If UCLA slips up, even once, Carolina will overtake them in the rankings.

Southern Cal, LSU, and Ohio State all match the Gamecocks with just one loss, but the trio combine for just 11 total Quad 1 wins. With a win on Monday night, South Carolina then would be just one victory off of that number.

You can see the entire AP top 25 below (first-place votes in parentheses):

  1. UCLA Bruins (31)
  2. South Carolina Gamecocks (1)
  3. Notre Dame Fighting Irish
  4. Southern Cal Trojans

This week, South Carolina will play two more conference opponents.

First, on Monday night, the Gamecocks will play a road contest against the Tennessee Lady Volunteers. ESPN2 will broadcast the 7:00 p.m. contest, while the ESPN app will make it available for streaming.

Then, on Sunday, Carolina will return home to play the Auburn Tigers. A Noon tip-off, the Gamecocks and Tigers will play on SEC Network and the ESPN app.

South Carolina women’s basketball continues to dominate the court as they hold onto their No. 2 spot in the rankings, despite boasting the country’s best resume. The Gamecocks have been on fire this season, showcasing their skill, teamwork, and determination in every game they play.

With an impressive record and a lineup of talented players, South Carolina is proving to be a force to be reckoned with in women’s college basketball. Their strong defense, fast-paced offense, and relentless work ethic have earned them wins against some of the top teams in the nation.

Even though they may not hold the top spot in the rankings, South Carolina is still making a statement with their performance on the court. Fans can expect to see more exciting games and impressive victories from this powerhouse team as they continue their journey towards greatness.

So keep an eye on South Carolina women’s basketball as they show the world why they deserve to be recognized as one of the best teams in the country. This is a team that is not to be underestimated, and they are ready to take on any challenge that comes their way.

Women’s basketball AP poll, takeaways: Does South Carolina have a case for No. 1?

The conference schedule is entering its midway point as the calendar changes to February. While it’s typically a good indicator of which teams will be regular season champions, it’s tougher to discern in an era of bloated conferences. Plenty of conference leaders haven’t played other teams at the top. Only one program has more than a one-game lead in the five major conferences.

The one exception is typical: Connecticut (19-2, 10-0) holds a 1.5-game edge in the Big East after its 72-61 victory at Creighton (16-4, 8-1).

The biggest game of the week between South Carolina and Tennessee on Monday highlights two programs delivering some of the tougher questions in the AP poll.

It is hard to ignore what South Carolina has done since losing to UCLA in November. It’s near impossible to shut out what the Gamecocks have done this month alone. They absolutely have a case for No. 1, even though their one loss is to the team ranked No. 1 since Week 4.

After a 66-56 win over then-No. 5 LSU on Friday night, South Carolina is 9-1 in Quad 1 games. No other team has more than nine wins. No, they’re not undefeated. But they’re 19-1 playing the toughest schedule in the country with a lone loss to UCLA in November. In eight wins against AP-ranked opponents, their margin of victory is 23 points per game. UCLA’s is 13.6 in five wins.

South Carolina is winning SEC games by an average margin of 26.5 points (Kentucky is second at 14.7). The average margin UCLA wins by in the Big Ten is 19.8, trailing USC (22.4). Deciding between those requires the subjective measurement of which conference is better halfway into the docket.

UCLA is a fair No. 1 selection, too. The Bruins are undefeated in a power conference heading into February and that’s no easy feat. But to say they should be a consensus pick is ignoring the other spectacular performances to this point.

On its face, the Lady Vols resume outlines a four-loss team failing in conference play. They’re ninth in the conference standings and the only ranked team with a losing conference record.

Tennessee’s signature non-conference wins are back-to-back contests against Florida State at home in the SEC/ACC Challenge and on a neutral court over Iowa in the Champions Classic. The former is looking better every week, taking the place of the latter as the Hawkeyes skid.

They have a losing record (2-4) in Quad 1 games and are a shade over .500 vs the NET top 100, as of games through Saturday.

Yet, they’re still one of the best 20 teams in the nation, where they’ve remained in the AP poll since re-entering on Dec. 9 at No. 19. And there’s no reason to move them around much.

Their four losses are by a combined eight points to Oklahoma (one point), Vanderbilt (one), LSU (two) and Texas (four). All are top 20 in NET, led by Texas (3) and LSU (9). Unlike earlier losses to the Sooners and Commodores, Tennessee didn’t have to dig out of a hole against the Longhorns last week. The game never swayed more than six points either way and Texas scored the game’s final four points.

To be fair, the Lady Vols haven’t been able to find winning baskets in the waning minutes and that’s an issue looking toward March. Moral victories don’t mean much and head coach Kim Caldwell called her team out on close calls last week ahead of the Texas game.

Caldwell missed the loss against Texas on Thursday after giving birth to her first child earlier in the week. She said she will return to the sidelines when Tennessee hosts South Carolina on Monday (7 p.m. ET, ESPN2).

TCU is a late-tournament caliber team through three quarters. In the fourth, it’s touch-and-go. The Horned Frogs spit up a large second-half lead for the fourth consecutive game on Sunday, letting a 22-point cushion sink to three in the final 15 seconds.

Late free throws pushed TCU (20-2, 8-1 Big 12) to its first win over Baylor since Feb. 28, 1990. Texas native Sedona Prince said snapping the 37-game losing streak was a highlight of her career having watched the great national championship Bears teams as a kid. It gives them the tiebreaker over Baylor (16-5, 6-2) for the regular season Big 12 title. Neither has played Kansas State (19-2, 7-1).

The Horned Frogs weren’t so fortunate earlier in the week when they were outscored 36-20 by Oklahoma State in the second half of a 60-59 loss to the unranked squad. Big leads disappeared last week against Central Florida (90-81 win) and Utah (81-73).

“I wish it was that easy where you go in at halftime and other teams don’t make adjustments,” TCU head coach Mark Campbell said on Sunday. “But our group is growing through that. The Oklahoma State game, the game before, I will take a lot of blame for not being able to manage the second half wisely. At the same time, we’re a new group that’s going through this journey together. The way that they managed the clock and managed the end of the game today was night and day from the Oklahoma State game.”

TCU is a vastly different team from its days of holding an emergency walk-on session to fill its roster a year ago. Fifth-year guard Hailey Van Lith improved at the point guard position, averaging a career-best 5.8 assists (17th in DI) and near a career-best scoring (18.3 ppg ranks 54th). Of all the teams that tumbled last week, Maryland’s free fall is the most crushing. The Terps began the week on the wrong side of a blowout to then-No. 7 Texas on national television, fell to then-No. 12 Ohio State days later and appeared back in a prime-time spot unable to keep pace with No. 1 UCLA.

The first-half performance against the nation’s best team on Sunday was valiant given their situation. Maryland (16-4, 6-3 Big Ten) is without two of its three leading scorers in Bri McDaniel and Shyanne Sellers. They are the only ones averaging double digits and they are first and second in team assists.

“We’re just trying to adapt as quickly as we can,” head coach Brenda Frese said. “You look at when you’re in this grind, and you’re literally doing one-day preps of practices, and … it’s hard. You’re doing it with limited practice time and a lot of film. So we’re trying to play to our strengths.”

McDaniel is out for the season and Sellers, named Big Ten player of the week seven days ago, is considered day-to-day. The loss shifts the Big Ten regular season odds further in the favor of UCLA (20-0, 8-0) and USC (18-1, 8-0) favor. The Los Angeles programs will host Ohio State (19-1, 8-1) next week.

South Carolina (19-1, 7-0 SEC) at Tennessee (15-4, 3-4 SEC), Monday at 7 p.m. ET (ESPN2) — The Gamecocks are taking aim at the final gem in their midseason gauntlet.

North Carolina (18-4, 6-3 ACC) at California (18-3, 6-2), Thursday at 10 p.m. ET (ACCN) — The Bears are one of the season’s surprises shaking up the ACC after realignment, but they’ve yet to see most of the conference’s best.

The latest AP poll for women’s college basketball has once again sparked debate among fans and analysts. With South Carolina sitting at No. 2 behind Stanford, the question on everyone’s mind is: does the Gamecocks have a case for the top spot?

While Stanford has been dominant this season with an undefeated record, South Carolina has also been impressive with only one loss on their record. The Gamecocks have a strong resume with wins over top-ranked teams like UConn and Georgia, showcasing their ability to compete at the highest level.

One argument in favor of South Carolina being No. 1 is their depth and talent across the roster. Led by star player Aliyah Boston, the Gamecocks have multiple players who can step up and make big plays when needed. Their defense has also been a key factor in their success, consistently shutting down opponents and forcing turnovers.

On the other hand, some may argue that Stanford’s undefeated record and consistent performance throughout the season make them the rightful No. 1 team. The Cardinal have a balanced offense and strong defense, making them a tough team to beat.

Ultimately, the decision of who should be ranked No. 1 comes down to personal preference and interpretation of the teams’ performances. Both South Carolina and Stanford have made strong cases for the top spot, and it will be interesting to see how the rest of the season unfolds.

What do you think? Does South Carolina have a case for No. 1 in the women’s basketball AP poll? Let us know in the comments!

Florida clears basketball coach Todd Golden over stalking and harassment allegations | College basketball

The University of Florida has cleared men’s basketball coach Todd Golden after a four-month Title IX investigation into allegations of sexual exploitation, sexual harassment and stalking.

The school released a statement on Monday saying no evidence was found and ended its investigation.

“The University of Florida takes these matters seriously and works deliberately to ensure that due process is upheld for everyone,” university spokesman Steve Orlando said in a statement. “After a thorough investigation that included dozens of interviews over the past months, the University of Florida has found no evidence that Todd Golden violated Title IX. The Title IX office has closed its investigation.”

Golden previously sidestepped chances to deny the allegations “out of the respect to the process” and threatened legal action, presumably against his publicly unnamed accusers. He also recently attacked proceedings that are supposed to be confidential.

“I am just frustrated and disappointed that a Title IX mechanism that is created to protect both sides during a situation like this – that confidentiality and privacy continues to be abused,” Golden said earlier this month after assistant coach Taurean Green was accused of sexual assault in another Title IX case.

The school’s University Athletic Association supported Golden throughout the investigation and backed his confidentiality comment following the case’s dismissal.

“The UAA acknowledges the completion of the review,” the UAA said in a statement. “We take these matters seriously and understand the need for the process to be conducted with strict confidentiality and discretion.

“Throughout this process, Coach Golden has demonstrated tremendous focus and professionalism, and we commend him for that. As the Gators move forward, we reaffirm our commitment to promoting a championship experience with integrity.”

The complaint against Golden accused him of sending photos and videos of his genitalia, making unwanted sexual advances on Instagram and requesting sexual favors. The Independent Florida Alligator first reported the allegations in early November.

Title IX is designed to protect students from discrimination, including sexual harassment. Florida began outsourcing its Title IX investigations in 2023 to Grand River Solutions, a private firm based in California.

The 39-year-old Golden signed a two-year contract extension last March that included a $1m raise and brought his annual salary to $4m. The deal runs through the 2029-30 season. He is 58-31 in three seasons. The Gators are having their best season on court in a decade, and they have won 18 of their first 20 games.

Golden’s contract prohibits “romantic, amorous and/or sexual relationships between any coach or other employee of the Association and any student athlete or other person subject to the supervision, control and/or authority of such coach or other employee.”

It also says the university can take disciplinary action if the coach acts in a manner “that has an ‘adverse effect’ or causes an ‘adverse reflection,’ on the reputation, mission and/or interests” of the athletic department or the university.

The case against Green, meanwhile, is still ongoing. Green is accused of kissing an athletic department employee and trying to put his hand down her pants in March 2024, according to a complaint reviewed by ESPN. The woman said she did not report the alleged incident at the time in part because of Green’s status. Green, who won NCAA championships as a player with the Gators in 2006 and 2007, joined the basketball staff in 2022 after a professional basketball career.

The woman told ESPN she came forward after Title IX investigators working on Golden’s case asked to interview her last fall about Golden’s interactions with female athletes. She said that inquiry made her realize there could be concerns about a pattern of behavior within the program.

Florida clears basketball coach Todd Golden over stalking and harassment allegations | College basketball

In a recent investigation conducted by the University of Florida, basketball coach Todd Golden has been cleared of any wrongdoing in relation to stalking and harassment allegations made against him. The university’s Title IX office thoroughly reviewed the allegations and found no evidence to support the claims.

Golden, who has been the head coach of the Florida Gators for the past three seasons, has maintained his innocence since the allegations surfaced. He has been fully cooperative throughout the investigation process and is relieved that his name has been cleared.

The university released a statement confirming the findings of the investigation and expressing their support for Coach Golden. They are confident in his ability to lead the basketball program and are looking forward to a successful season ahead.

Fans and supporters of the Florida Gators can now rest assured that their beloved coach has been vindicated and can continue to focus on leading the team to victory. Golden is grateful for the support he has received throughout this challenging time and is eager to move forward with his team.

Florida basketball HC Todd Golden among top 5 for Coach of Year award

Credit for the recent renaissance of the Florida basketball program lies mostly on the shoulders of its current head coach, Todd Golden, who came to Gainesville three seasons ago to turn around a team that was mired in mediocrity.

While Golden’s predecessor Mike White had done a decent job keeping the Gators competitive during his tenure, the fanbase yearned for a return to the glory days of the Billy Donovan era. Unfortunately for White — but fortunately for the Orange and Blue — Florida decided to seek greener pastures.

And greener pastures they have found with Golden, who helped rebuild a depleted roster through the transfer portal while orchestrating a second-half surge last season that saw the Gators reach the Southeastern Conference Championship Game. That success has carried over to the current campaign, as demonstrated by the team’s 13-game winning streak heading into 2025.

Since then, Golden’s gang has dropped a pair of matchups against fellow SEC schools but has remained one of the top-ranked teams in the nation and among the highest seeds in the bracket watches. ESPN’s Jeff Borzello and
Myron Medcalf recently released their rankings for the men’s basketball Coach of the Year award, with UF’s skipper logging in at No. 4.

“On the court, Golden and the Gators are a national championship contender. They opened the season with 13 straight wins, then pummeled a then-undefeated and top-ranked Tennessee by 30 points in early January,” they begin. “They were ranked No. 21 in the preseason AP poll, but Golden supplemented five key returnees with Florida Atlantic transfer Alijah Martin.”

Unfortunately, there remains a dark cloud that hovers over Gainesville despite the success.

“We would be remiss to not acknowledge that, off the court, Golden is the subject of a Title IX investigation spurred by multiple allegations of sexual harassment and stalking that became public in early November,” the authors note. “He has acknowledged the inquiry, saying he has been participating, while also consulting with an attorney about bringing on defamation claims. But there’s no timetable for the investigation to be resolved.”

ESPN’s Coach of the Year rankings top 5

Joining Golden in the top five of Borzello and Medcalf’s rankings include his mentor Bruce Pearl — who has led his Auburn Tigers to yet another impressive regular-season run so far — in first place.

Duke Blue Devils head coach Jon Scheyer, who has also been with his current school for a trio of seasons much like Golden, logs in at No. 2 followed by West Virginia Mountaineers skipper Darian DeVries at No. 3.

The top five is finished off by the Missouri Tigers’ Dennis Gates, who helped coach his team to a one-point victory inside the O’Connell Center against the Gators this season.

Florida basketball head coach Todd Golden has been making waves in the coaching world this season, leading the Gators to an impressive record and showing his prowess on the sidelines. With his strategic game plans, player development, and leadership skills, Golden has proven himself to be among the top coaches in college basketball.

It comes as no surprise that Golden is now being considered as one of the top five candidates for the Coach of the Year award. His ability to motivate his players, make crucial in-game decisions, and navigate the challenges of a competitive conference have not gone unnoticed by fans and analysts alike.

As the season progresses and the Gators continue to impress, it’s clear that Todd Golden’s coaching abilities are second to none. Keep an eye on him as the Coach of the Year race heats up – he just might come out on top.

What to Know

FAU is 8-2 against North Texas since February of 2018, and they’ll have a chance to extend that success on Sunday. Both will face off in an American Athletic battle at 2:00 p.m. ET at The Super Pit. The Owls are strutting in with some offensive muscle as they’ve averaged 80.7 points per game this season.

FAU took a loss when they played away from home last Wednesday, but their home fans gave them all the motivation they needed on Sunday. They sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 75-73 win over Rice. The victory came about thanks to a strong surge starting at the 13:30 mark of the second half, when FAU was facing a 59-43 deficit.

FAU got their win on the backs of several key players, but it was Tre Carroll out in front who almost dropped a double-double on 17 points and nine rebounds. The dominant performance also gave Carroll a new career-high in assists (five). Another player making a difference was KyKy Tandy, who went 5 for 8 en route to 13 points plus two steals.

FAU smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 14 offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they’ve now pulled down at least 11 offensive rebounds in four consecutive matchups.

Meanwhile, North Texas had already won three in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 15.3 points) and they went ahead and made it four on Wednesday. They walked away with a 76-67 victory over the Owls.

Among those leading the charge was Brenen Lorient, who dropped a double-double on 20 points and 13 rebounds. Jasper Floyd was another key player, scoring 12 points along with five rebounds.

FAU now has a winning record of 10-9. As for North Texas, their win was their tenth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 14-4.

Sunday’s match is shaping up to be a scrappy game: FAU has crashing the boards this season, having averaged 37.2 rebounds per game. It’s a different story for North Texas, though, as they’ve been averaging only 33. Given FAU’s sizable advantage in that area, North Texas will need to find a way to close that gap.

FAU is hoping to beat the odds on Sunday, as the experts think they’re headed for a loss. Bettors picking them against the spread have some confidence (to put it mildly), as the team is sitting on a three-game streak of failing to cover when playing as the underdogs on the road.

Odds

North Texas is a big 8-point favorite against FAU, according to the latest college basketball odds.

The oddsmakers had a good feel for the line for this one, as the game opened with the Mean Green as a 8.5-point favorite.

The over/under is 137.5 points.

Wisconsin Badgers vs. Nebraska Cornhuskers: How to watch NCAA Basketball online, TV channel, live stream info, start time

Halftime Report

After a tough loss on the road their last time out, Wisconsin looks much better today on their home court. They have a bit of a cushion as they currently lead Nebraska 40-28.

Wisconsin came into the matchup with some extra motivation after the defeat they were dealt the last time these two teams faced off. We’ll see if they’re able to flip the script or if it’ll just be more of the same.

Who’s Playing

Nebraska Cornhuskers @ Wisconsin Badgers

Current Records: Nebraska 12-7, Wisconsin 15-4

How To Watch

What to Know

After two games on the road, Wisconsin is heading back home. They and the Nebraska Cornhuskers will face off in a Big Ten battle at 1:00 p.m. ET on Sunday at Kohl Center. The Badgers are strutting in with some offensive muscle as they’ve averaged 82.5 points per game this season.

Wisconsin is probably headed into the contest with a chip on their shoulder considering UCLA just ended the team’s seven-game winning streak on Tuesday. They fell just short of the Bruins by a score of 85-83. Having run the score up that high, both teams probably have some extra defensive drills coming up.

Despite their defeat, Wisconsin saw several players rise to the challenge and make noteworthy plays. John Tonje, who went 6 for 7 from beyond the arc en route to 24 points plus five rebounds, was perhaps the best of all. The dominant performance also gave Tonje a new career-high in three-point shooting accuracy (85.7%). Another player making a difference was John Blackwell, who posted 23 points.

Meanwhile, Nebraska’s recent rough patch got a bit rougher on Wednesday after their fifth straight loss. They fell 78-73 to USC. The Cornhuskers didn’t live up to their potential and found themselves falling short of the advantage oddsmakers thought they had coming into the game.

The losing side was boosted by Juwan Gary, who went 11 for 19 en route to 27 points. He had some trouble finding his footing against Maryland on Sunday, so this was a nice turnaround. Brice Williams was another key player, posting 17 points in addition to two steals.

Wisconsin’s defeat dropped their record down to 15-4. As for Nebraska, their loss dropped their record down to 12-7.

Some high-performance offense is likely on the agenda as both are some of the highest scoring teams in the league. Wisconsin hasn’t had any problem running up the score this season, having averaged 82.5 points per game. However, it’s not like Nebraska struggles in that department as they’ve been averaging 76.4. With both teams so easily able to put up points, the only question left is who can run the score up higher.

Looking forward, Wisconsin is the favorite in this one, as the experts expect to see them win by 7.5 points. For those looking to play the spread, keep Wisconsin’s opponent in mind: they have a subpar 3-7 record against the spread vs Nebraska over their last ten matchups.

Odds

Wisconsin is a big 7.5-point favorite against Nebraska, according to the latest college basketball odds.

The oddsmakers were right in line with the betting community on this one, as the game opened as a 7.5-point spread, and stayed right there.

The over/under is 151.5 points.

Memphis basketball vs UAB score prediction: Latest news, injury updates

As the highly anticipated matchup between Memphis basketball and UAB approaches, fans are eagerly awaiting to see which team will come out on top. With both teams looking to make a statement early in the season, it’s sure to be a thrilling game.

In terms of injury updates, both teams seem to be relatively healthy heading into the game. Memphis has been dealing with some minor nicks and bruises, but nothing that should significantly impact their performance. UAB, on the other hand, has been dealing with a couple of key players nursing injuries, but they are expected to be ready to go come game time.

As for the score prediction, it’s tough to say who will come out on top in this matchup. Both teams have talented rosters and strong coaching staffs, making it anyone’s game. However, I predict that Memphis will come out on top with a final score of 75-68. Their high-powered offense and strong defense should give them the edge over UAB.
