Memphis basketball vs UAB score prediction: Latest news, injury updates

As the highly anticipated matchup between Memphis basketball and UAB approaches, fans are eagerly awaiting to see which team will come out on top. With both teams looking to make a statement early in the season, it’s sure to be a thrilling game.

In terms of injury updates, both teams seem to be relatively healthy heading into the game. Memphis has been dealing with some minor nicks and bruises, but nothing that should significantly impact their performance. UAB, on the other hand, has been dealing with a couple of key players nursing injuries, but they are expected to be ready to go come game time.

As for the score prediction, it’s tough to say who will come out on top in this matchup. Both teams have talented rosters and strong coaching staffs, making it anyone’s game. However, I predict that Memphis will come out on top with a final score of 75-68. Their high-powered offense and strong defense should give them the edge over UAB.

Be sure to tune in to the game to see if my prediction holds true and to witness an exciting matchup between these two talented teams. Let’s go Tigers! #Memphisbasketball #UAB #scoreprediction

Duquesne is probably headed into the match with a chip on their shoulder considering Dayton just ended the team’s three-game winning streak on Tuesday. They wound up on the wrong side of a bruising 82-62 walloping at the hands of the Flyers. The Dukes were in a tough position after the first half, with the score already sitting at 44-25.

Duquesne’s defeat shouldn’t obscure the performances of Tre Dinkins III, who earned 14 points, and Kareem Rozier, who had eight points in addition to five assists and three steals.

Meanwhile, Fordham’s recent rough patch got a bit rougher on Wednesday after their sixth straight loss. They fell to Loyola Chi. 70-66.

Fordham’s defeat shouldn’t obscure the performances of Japhet Medor, who went 6 for 11 en route to 22 points plus six assists, and Jackie Johnson III, who earned 22 points in addition to two steals. The matchup was Johnson III’s third in a row with at least 22.4 points.

Duquesne now has a losing record at 9-10. As for Fordham, their loss dropped their record down to 8-11.

Maryland men’s basketball at Indiana preview

Maryland men’s basketball put together a signature road victory against No. 17 Illinois Thursday. Now it’s got to build off that momentum and keep winning.

The Terps’ road trip continues in Bloomington, Indiana, against Indiana Sunday, as they look to create their first three-game Big Ten win streak of the season. The Hoosiers come into the game looking to avoid falling into a skid.

Tip-off is scheduled for noon ET and the game will air on CBS.

Indiana Hoosiers (14-6, 5-4 Big Ten)

2023-24 record: 19-14, 10-10 Big Ten

Indiana enters Sunday’s contest off a disheartening loss to Northwestern, but less than 10 days removed from an overtime road victory over Ohio State.

It’s been an up-and-down campaign thus far for the Hoosiers. They’ve got a winning record both overall and in conference play, but five of its six losses have come by at least 15 points. But head coach Mike Woodson’s squad will return home for the first time in 12 days looking to establish some consistency.

This isn’t an Indiana team the caliber of Woodson’s early tenure, with Trayce Jackson-Davis leading the way. But it’s still one capable of making plenty of noise.

Players to know

Oumar Ballo, redshirt senior center, 7-foot-0, No. 11 — Ballo transferred to Bloomington after three seasons at Arizona and has continued to be one of the most efficient scorers in the country. His 65.8% field goal percentage is the highest in the Big Ten among players with at least four shots per game. Ballo also paces the conference in rebounds per game (10.2), while leading the Hoosiers in blocks per game (1.7).

Malik Reneau, junior forward, 6-foot-9, No. 5 — Derik Queen’s former Montverde Academy teammate missed five games with an injury before returning for 11 minutes against Northwestern. It’s yet to be seen if he’s fully healthy — but if he is, Reneau is a key contributor for Indiana. He’s second on the team with 13.3 points per game.

Trey Galloway, senior guard, 6-foot-4, No. 32 — Galloway is the primary facilitator in Indiana’s offense out of the backcourt. He averages just 7.2 points per game but leads the team with 4.1 assists per contest. Galloway has come off the bench in each of Indiana’s last two games, yet he’s been a big part of both games regardless, with at least 25 minutes in each.

Strength

Frontcourt offense. Indiana’s starting frontcourt of Ballo, Reneau and 6-foot-9 sophomore Mackenzie Mgbako is also its top three scorers. The Hoosiers can create action down low on any given night and in a variety of ways.

Weakness

Defense. The Hoosiers allow 72.8 points per game, the third most in the Big Ten. They don’t create much action on that end of the court, either, sitting in the conference’s bottom five in steals per game (5.9). Indiana has allowed 85 or more points in all but one of its six losses.

Three things to watch

1. How deep does Kevin Willard go into his bench? Even in a game that ended up a blowout, just four members of Maryland’s bench saw a combined 30 minutes against Illinois. With starters potentially feeling that fatigue, against a weaker opponent in Illinois, it’s worth noting if Willard will give his bench a bit more run.

2. How does Derik Queen look? Queen bounced back against Illinois, totaling 25 points, six rebounds, four assists and three steals just one game after posting a season-low three points against Nebraska. Whether he builds off the momentum he created against the Fighting Illini or continues to struggle could be the difference between a win and a loss.

3. Important conference standings matchup. Both the Terps and Hoosiers currently sit at 5-4 in conference play, tied for seventh in the Big Ten. The winner of Sunday’s contest gets a critical boost further into the top half of conference standings.

Maryland Men’s Basketball Faces Tough Test at Indiana

The Maryland men’s basketball team is gearing up for a tough road game as they prepare to face off against the Indiana Hoosiers. The Terrapins are coming off a strong start to the season, with a record of 6-1 and wins over top-ranked opponents like Illinois and Wisconsin.

However, Indiana presents a formidable challenge for Maryland, as they boast a talented roster and a strong home court advantage. The Hoosiers are currently 5-2 on the season and are looking to make a statement in the Big Ten conference.

Key players to watch in this matchup include Maryland’s standout guard Eric Ayala, who leads the team in scoring with an average of 16.6 points per game, and Indiana’s dynamic forward Trayce Jackson-Davis, who is averaging a double-double with 19.3 points and 9.9 rebounds per game.

Maryland will need to bring their A-game on both ends of the court to come out on top in this matchup. They will need to contain Jackson-Davis and limit Indiana’s scoring opportunities, while also executing on offense and taking advantage of their own scoring opportunities.

This game is sure to be an exciting and competitive matchup between two talented teams in the Big Ten conference. Maryland fans will be eagerly watching to see if their team can come out with a crucial road win against Indiana. Tune in to see all the action unfold.

Big Ten men’s basketball power rankings after Ohio State stuns Purdue

The Big Ten had a strong representation in the 2024 NCAA Tournament and appears on track to do so again this season. Six teams from the conference went dancing, with Purdue reaching the national championship, though the Boilermakers fell short against a buzzsaw UConn squad.

It wouldn’t be shocking to see more than a half-dozen Big Ten programs this March, given what we’ve seen thus far during the 2024-25 campaign. However, the No. 11 Boilermakers didn’t do themselves any favors by disastrously squandering a 16-point first-half lead to Ohio State.

A 15-0 run in crunch time propelled the Buckeyes to secure the comeback upset victory over the Boilermakers. The meltdown will conceivably be a blemish on Purdue’s resume, but they’re still a basketball powerhouse. If anything, it speaks to the competitive nature and talent within the Big Ten.

Following Purdue’s 73-70 loss, let’s assess the state of the Big Ten.

No. 8 Michigan State is the last unbeaten Big Ten school in conference play. As long as Tom Izzo is on the sidelines, they will always be incredibly well-coached and prepared.

The Spartans aren’t necessarily an offensive or defensive juggernaut. Nonetheless, they’re balanced and do all the little things right, and that’s a testament to Izzo’s impact. Michigan State is seventh in the country in nightly free throw attempts (19.1) while converting from the charity stripe at the third-highest rate (81.3 percent). They also rank ninth in assists per game (18.3).

Led by senior guard Jaden Akins and ascending freshman Jace Richardson, Michigan State is dangerous.

No. 15 Oregon is the inverse of Michigan State. All the Ducks’ losses this season have come in conference play, and they’re undefeated against outsiders.

Perhaps the Ducks are still getting used to their new surroundings after leaving the Pac-12 and joining the Big Ten. Regardless, Oregon’s No. 7 Strength of Record (SOR) rank indicates they’re a force to be reckoned with.

Yet, the Ducks are a jack-of-all-trades, master of none, demonstrated by their 108th- and 103rd-ranked defensive and offensive ratings. So, depending on the day and opponent, Oregon can be vulnerable.

Standout freshman guard Kasparas Jakucionis makes No. 17 Illinois a threat to beat anyone in the nation. He’s a consensus top-five NBA draft pick for a reason, and his shoulders are big enough to carry the Fighting Illini to greatness.

Illinois is a high-powered scoring machine that can beat you in multiple ways. They take and make threes at a high clip, ranking 25th and eighth in the country in the respective categories. The Fighting Illini also do an excellent job limiting second-chance opportunities by attacking the glass, leading the nation in rebounds per game (31.8).

Despite their record, the Fighting Illini boast the Big Ten’s highest Basketball Power Index (BPI) rating (18.3).

Purdue’s defeat at the hands of the Buckeyes stings, but Matt Painter’s crew has several contributors from last year’s national championship team. Their combination of experience, personnel and ability to get hot from beyond the arc in a hurry makes them a viable threat.

No. 18 Wisconsin has turned a new leaf under head coach Greg Gard. While they’re typically regarded for their defensive efforts, the Badgers are getting it done on the offensive end of the court this season.

Wisconsin’s 82.5 points per game are their third-highest average output in school history. It’s also the first time they’re pacing to clear the 80-point mark since the 1971-72 season.

No. 21 Michigan thrived despite having the 10th-hardest schedule in the nation thus far. They’ve done so with incredible offensive efficiency and ball movement, and fifth-year seven-footer Vladislav Goldin has been the driving force of it all. The Russian big man’s decision to follow Dusty May to Ann Arbor has paid dividends for him and the Wolverines.

Ja’Kobi Gillespie and Derik Queen have formed an intriguing inside-out tandem. Maryland impressively has a higher BPI than Wisconsin and Oregon. Nevertheless, the Ducks beat them when they met on Jan. 5, making it difficult to put the Terrapins above them. But if they beat the Badgers on Jan. 29, we may need to revisit this discussion.

Arizona transfer Oumar Ballo has been a beast for Indiana in the paint, leading the Big Ten in rebounds per game (10.3) and field goal percentage (.669). Malik Reneau has also been a factor on the wings. But the Hoosiers’ unwillingness to fire away from long distance is their Achilles heel.

Indiana ranks 303rd and 319th out of 364 Division I programs in three-point percentage and per-game attempts. Their shortcomings from beyond the arc in today’s basketball era put them at a significant disadvantage.

Mick Cronin has been vocal this season, comfortably airing his grievances publicly. Following UCLA’s loss to Michigan, he called them a “soft” and “delusional” bunch. Frankly, it’s an accurate assessment. But it seems like the message has been delivered to the Bruins lately, who have won their past two games, including a statement victory over Wisconsin.

UCLA’s remarkable defense has saved them and Cronin from total embarrassment. The Bruins have allowed the 19th-fewest points per game in the nation (63.7).

Fifth-year senior guard Brice Williams has been a one-man wrecking crew for Nebraska. However, he lacks a reliable running mate and can only do so much himself in a strong Big Ten conference. Fred Hoiberg’s Corn Huskers will need someone else to step up if they want to make some legitimate noise.

12. Penn State Nittany Lions
13. Ohio State Buckeyes
14. Northwestern Wildcats
15. USC Trojans

  1. Ohio State Buckeyes
After their stunning upset victory over Purdue, the Ohio State Buckeyes have undoubtedly earned the top spot in the Big Ten men’s basketball power rankings. They are now the team to beat in the conference and have proven that they can compete with the best.

  2. Purdue Boilermakers
Despite their recent loss to Ohio State, the Purdue Boilermakers are still a force to be reckoned with in the Big Ten. They have a talented roster and are capable of making a deep run in the NCAA tournament.

  3. Michigan Wolverines
The Michigan Wolverines have been consistently strong this season and are currently sitting at the top of the Big Ten standings. They have a balanced scoring attack and are a tough team to beat on both ends of the court.

  4. Wisconsin Badgers
The Wisconsin Badgers have been one of the surprise teams in the Big Ten this season. They have a strong defense and are capable of pulling off upsets against some of the top teams in the conference.

  5. Illinois Fighting Illini
The Illinois Fighting Illini have had their ups and downs this season, but they have the talent to compete with the best teams in the Big Ten. They will be a tough out in the conference tournament.

  6. Iowa Hawkeyes
The Iowa Hawkeyes have been inconsistent at times this season, but they have the potential to make a deep run in the NCAA tournament. They have a high-powered offense led by standout player Luka Garza.

  7. Maryland Terrapins
The Maryland Terrapins have shown flashes of brilliance this season, but they have struggled against some of the top teams in the Big Ten. They will need to find more consistency if they want to make a run in the conference tournament.

  8. Michigan State Spartans
The Michigan State Spartans have had a down year by their standards, but they are still a dangerous team in the Big Ten. They have a strong defense and are capable of pulling off upsets against some of the top teams in the conference.

  9. Rutgers Scarlet Knights
The Rutgers Scarlet Knights have been a pleasant surprise in the Big Ten this season. They have a tough defense and are capable of competing with the best teams in the conference.

  10. Indiana Hoosiers
The Indiana Hoosiers have struggled at times this season, but they have the talent to compete with the top teams in the Big Ten. They will need to find more consistency if they want to make a run in the conference tournament.

Why didn’t Mark Sears play 2nd half for Alabama basketball vs. LSU?

When Alabama basketball came out for the second half of Saturday’s win over LSU, regular starting point guard Mark Sears wasn’t on the floor. The Muscle Shoals native did not appear in the entire second half, during which the Crimson Tide pulled off a 80-73 victory after the game was tied at 40 entering halftime.

UA head coach Nate Oats avoided addressing a reason for the absence. When he was asked what led to Sears sitting, Oats was short.

“We just played the guys we thought gave us the best chance to win that second half,” Oats said.

Sears finished the game with 17 minutes, all in the first half. He went 0-for-5 from the field, and finished -1.

After the game, Oats began his press conference by alluding to a desire for more defensive effort.

“We went with the guys in the second half (who) we thought gave us the best chance to win this game,” Oats said. “And we won the game and our defense was significantly better than the first half. And we haven’t done that very often this year, so that’s all I’m going to say about that stuff.”

Oats went on to praise UA center Cliff Omoruyi, who he said drastically improved in the second half. Oats said Omoruyi’s effort after the break earned him the team’s “Hard Hat” award, despite the Rutgers transfer not starting the second half.

Alabama’s coach was asked what he wanted to see from Sears moving forward, with a trip to Mississippi State coming Wednesday.

“Same response Cliff gave us in the second half,” Oats said. “Be all about doing the stuff we need to win basketball games.”

The Crimson Tide moved to 17-3 on the season with the LSU win, 6-1 in SEC play. Alabama and Mississippi State are scheduled to tip off at 8 p.m. CT Wednesday in Starkville, with the game aired on the SEC Network.

There has been speculation and confusion surrounding the absence of Mark Sears in the second half of the recent Alabama basketball game against LSU. Many fans have been wondering why the talented guard did not see any playing time after halftime.

One possible explanation is that Sears may have been dealing with an injury or some other physical issue that limited his ability to play. It is not uncommon for coaches to hold players out of games if they are not at full strength in order to prevent further injury.

Another possibility is that the coaching staff made a strategic decision to bench Sears in favor of other players who they felt were better equipped to handle the match-up against LSU. Basketball is a game of matchups, and coaches often make changes to their lineups based on the strengths and weaknesses of the opposing team.

Regardless of the reason for Sears’ absence in the second half, it is important to trust in the decisions of the coaching staff and support the team as a whole. Hopefully, Sears will be back on the court soon and able to contribute to the team’s success in future games.

Suns playing better basketball with former starter Jusuf Nurkic buried deep on the bench

PHOENIX (AP) — Things are looking up for the Phoenix Suns on the basketball court these days. The same can’t be said for Jusuf Nurkic.

The struggling Nurkic has gone from the starting center to a benchwarmer in the space of about a month. Coach Mike Budenholzer doesn’t seem like he’s going to reverse that decision any time soon — especially with the Suns winning eight of their last 11 games and the emergence of newcomer Nick Richards.

Nurkic made waves Saturday night when the center told The Arizona Republic before a 119-109 victory over the Washington Wizards that he didn’t have a conversation with Budenholzer for a stretch that lasted two months and that the two “don’t have a relationship.”

“He hasn’t played,” Budenholzer said when asked about Nurkic’s comments. “I’m sure he’s frustrated, so I respect that.”

The 30-year-old Nurkic has been a starting center for most of the past decade, but his numbers have fallen since joining the Suns before last season. This season, he’s averaging just 8.2 points and 9.6 rebounds while shooting 45.4% from the field.

He’s had other problems, too. He was suspended three games after a fight with Dallas’ Naji Marshall and P.J. Washington. He also missed the team’s most recent five-game trip after dealing with the flu.

Nurkic was available Saturday against the Wizards, but didn’t play.

Richards — who was added in a trade with Charlotte with Jan. 15 — has taken the bulk of the minutes in the post over the past four games. He’s averaged 13.2 points and 12.2 rebounds and had 20 points and 19 rebounds against the Wizards on Saturday.

“We’ve got three of four guys who play the same position,” Budenholzer said. “We’re going to go with who we think gives us our best chance. You’ve got to earn your minutes. That’s been communicated.”

The Suns could deal Nurkic before the Feb. 6 trade deadline, but it’s not a certainty given the team’s salary cap situation and the center’s poor performance this season. He’s in the third season of a $70 million, four-year deal.

Phoenix came into this season with high expectations thanks to the star trio of Kevin Durant, Devin Booker and Bradley Beal, but have struggled with consistency. Phoenix improved to 23-21 on Saturday after beating Washington.

___

AP NBA: https://apnews.com/NBA

The Phoenix Suns have been on a roll lately, playing some of their best basketball of the season. And interestingly enough, former starting center Jusuf Nurkic has been buried deep on the bench during this hot streak.

Nurkic, who was once a key piece in the Suns’ starting lineup, has found himself out of favor with the coaching staff in recent weeks. Despite his talent and size, Nurkic has struggled to find his rhythm on the court and has been relegated to a limited role coming off the bench.

In his absence, the Suns have thrived, playing a more fast-paced and fluid style of basketball. With Deandre Ayton stepping up in the starting lineup and providing solid defense and scoring, the Suns have looked like a more cohesive unit on both ends of the floor.

While Nurkic may still have a role to play on this team, it’s clear that the Suns are playing better basketball without him in the starting lineup. It will be interesting to see how the coaching staff handles his minutes moving forward, but for now, the Suns are enjoying their success with Nurkic buried deep on the bench.

BYU came into the match with some extra motivation after the loss they were dealt the last time these two teams faced off. We’ll see if they’re able to flip the script or if it’ll just be more of the same.

What to Know

We’ve got another exciting Big 12 matchup on schedule as the Cincinnati Bearcats and the BYU Cougars are set to tip at 10:30 p.m. ET on Saturday at Marriott Center. The Bearcats’ defense has only allowed 61.7 points per game this season, so the Cougars’ offense will have their work cut out for them.

Last Tuesday, Cincinnati couldn’t handle Texas Tech and fell 81-71.

Despite the defeat, Cincinnati had strong showings from Dillon Mitchell, who went 5 for 8 en route to 12 points plus three blocks, and Jizzle James, who went 8 for 12 en route to 17 points. What’s more, James also posted a 66.7% field goal percentage, which is the highest he’s posted since back in November of 2024.

Cincinnati struggled to get the ball back on offense and finished the game with only three offensive rebounds. That’s the fewest offensive rebounds they’ve managed all season.

Colorado typically has all the answers at home, but on Tuesday BYU proved too difficult a challenge. They took down the Buffaloes 83-67.

Richie Saunders was the offensive standout of the game as he went 10 for 15 en route to 25 points plus five rebounds. Another player making a difference was Egor Demin, who posted eight points along with seven assists and four steals.

Cincinnati’s loss dropped their record down to 12-6. As for BYU, their victory ended a five-game drought on the road dating back to last season and puts them at 12-6.

Rebounding is likely to be a big factor in this contest: Cincinnati has crashing the boards this season, having averaged 37 rebounds per game. However, it’s not like BYU struggles in that department as they’ve been averaging 39.2. With both teams battling to corral missed shots, we’ll see if one team can grab an edge.

Cincinnati is hoping to beat the odds on Saturday, as the experts think they’re headed for a loss. Against the spread, they have been a house darling this year with a chancy 7-11 ATS record.

Odds

BYU is a solid 6.5-point favorite against Cincinnati, according to the latest college basketball odds.
