Orange County and Long Beach fire crews were fighting a brush fire Thursday afternoon near the interchange between the 405 and 605 freeways.
Dozens of units were assigned to the blaze, which started a little after 1 p.m., according to the Orange County Fire Authority.
A spokesperson couldn’t immediately provide details on how large the fire was, but he said the flames’ forward progress had been stopped as of about 2 p.m.
Multiple freeway lanes were closed as crews battled the fire.
Much of Southern California is currently under a red-flag warning for elevated fire danger from low humidity and gusty Santa Ana winds.

How incarcerated firefighters are helping battle the blazes around Los Angeles

More than 1,000 of the firefighters that have been battling the Southern California wildfires are convicts, part of a long-running state program. Training and deployment onto the fire lines is voluntary, with inmate firefighters making a maximum of about $10 a day or up to $30 if they work a 24-hour shift.
They may also qualify to get two days shaved off their sentence for every day they work. The state has become reliant on these men and women during the increasingly long fire season, and the program is estimated to save California tens of millions of dollars a year.
Supporters say the program offers a pathway out of prison, but critics say the work and pay are exploitative.
For more, I’m joined by Sam Lewis, executive director of the Anti-Recidivism Coalition.

Firefighters battle huge blaze near Los Angeles as winds pick up

Watch: Hughes fire in California fills sky with plumes of smoke Firefighters are battling a fast-moving blaze in southern California that has swelled over the past day, with authorities warning Thursday is “the period of greatest concern”.
The Hughes fire, about 45 miles (72 km) north of Los Angeles, grew to 10,000 acres (4,000 hectares), forcing tens of thousands of people to evacuate a region already reeling from the most destructive fires in its history.
Forecasters warned that powerful winds were expected to pose further challenge for firefighters, who have so far brought 14% of the fire’s perimeter under control.
The blaze is north of the two ongoing mammoth blazes that have destroyed a number of neighbourhoods in Los Angeles County.
The National Weather Service extended a red-flag warning until Friday morning for most of Los Angeles and Ventura counties as winds push through the area.
“Dangerous fire weather conditions will persist through Friday as fuels remain extremely dry and ready to burn, with Thursday the period of greatest concern,” an advisory said. “Any fire that starts can grow fast and out of control. Have a plan, especially if you are in a high fire risk area.”
More than 31,000 people were evacuated on Wednesday as the fire sent huge flames and plumes of smoke over a hilly terrain in the Castaic Lake area that borders several residential areas and schools.
Local news showed residents near the Hughes fire hosing down their homes and gardens with water and others rushing to evacuate.
Winds in the area were blowing at about 20-30mph (32-48km/h), but could pick up, which would fan the blaze and make it harder for air crews to operate.
Climate change has made the grasses and shrubs that are fuelling the Los Angeles fires more vulnerable to burning, scientists have said.
Rapid “whiplash”-style swings between dry and wet conditions in the region in recent years have created a massive amount of tinder-dry vegetation that is ready to catch fire.
While dry conditions will remain over the next few days, there is some respite on the way for the fire-ravaged region.
Widespread rain is forecast for southwestern California beginning on Saturday afternoon and lasting through to Monday night. Generally, rainfall will total up to half an inch, though the San Gabriel Mountains will fare better with up to 1.5in (4cm).
There is a chance that thunderstorms could also trigger localised heavy rain in some areas across the weekend. A few inches of snow are also possible above 4,000ft (1,200m).
Nearly 500 inmates at a local jail were being evacuated, according to Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna.
Officials said the blaze was different from the Palisades and Eaton fires, which killed at least 28 people and decimated more than 10,000 homes and businesses earlier this month.

The anticipated rainfall from Saturday is bringing new fears in the form of mudslides, flooding and landslides. Areas touched by the recent fires are particularly at risk, because torched grounds are less absorbent.

Who would have thought that the Pistons would be playing meaningful games in late-January and talking about whether they should be buyers at the trade deadline? After an impressive win over the Rockets on Monday, the Pistons have a chance to take down another playoff team on the road in Atlanta.
Although we are still a couple months away from the playoffs, this game can put the Pistons up 2-0 on the season series against the Hawks and move them into the 6th seed in the Eastern Conference playoff standings. The seeding obviously doesn’t matter at this point in the season, but the head-to-head standings could come into play as both teams are looking to be heading to a similar record on the season.
In the last matchup with the Hawks, the Pistons narrowly came out victorious after blowing a huge lead. Let’s not have that happen again.

After earning the number 1 overall pick, many people expected the Hawks to enter a full-on rebuild. Instead, they reworked the roster around Trae Young and breakout star, Jalen Johnson, and find themselves fighting for a spot in the Eastern Conference playoffs. You can look at the Hawks record and say that they are basically the same as last year’s team, but this team is much better equipped for the future with young players with upside and solid veterans around them.
The Pistons are in the same boat, although they went through the absolute lowest point you can go to get here. This should be a fun game between two up-and-coming Eastern Conference teams.
The Hawks will be without number one overall pick, Zaccharie Risacher due to injury and could also be without Jalen Johnson due to a shoulder injury. He is currently listed as a questionable, but I am going to assume that he will end up playing as it will make this a far more interesting game.
Trae Young is having an All Star caliber season just like Cade Cunningham is as he leads the league in Assists and is averaging 23.3 points per game, albeit on lower shooting percentages than Cade. Funnily enough, both players average 4.5 turnover per game.
Cade Cunningham and Trae Young are both the engine of the offense of their respective teams, but Young does have a little bit better of a supporting cast with Jalen Johnson being better than anybody else on the Pistons’ roster.
If Johnson does play, I would expect Ausar Thompson to get the chance to guard him as slowing him down has been a challenge for a lot of teams this season. He is currently sporting averages of 19.4 points, 10.3 rebounds, and 5.2 assists while also being a high-end defender.
The Hawks also have another high-end defender in Dyson Daniels, who leads the league in steals. Given how turnover prone Cade Cunningham is and the lack of defense that Trae Young provides, I would expect Daniels to spend most of his night trying to slow down Cade. In the last matchup, Cade only had 22 points and Dyson Daniels had 7 steals and played a huge role in the Hawks’ near comeback.
Jalen Duren is coming off arguably his best game of the season against the Rockets where he outplayed Alperen Sengun. When the opposing team’s center is not a high volume 3-point shooter, Jalen Duren does much better on defense, so hopefully he can keep his strong play going against Clint Capela and Onyeka Okongwu. He won’t have the athletic advantage against those two like he did against Sengun, but neither player are taking a ton of 3s, so he won’t have to play out on the perimeter as much.
The Pistons just came out victorious against one of the best defensive teams in the league in the Houston Rockets, and although the Hawks have some solid defensive players, they are not anywhere near the level defensively as the Rockets. This game very much could come down to which of the All Star hopefuls steps up more. If Jalen Johnson does not play, that would help the Pistons a ton in trying to get another impressive win on the road.

The 2025 NFL head coaching carousel is in full swing with the Chicago Bears snapping up Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson, the consensus top coach available for this cycle. The Jacksonville Jaguars missed out on hiring Johnson, who reportedly wanted the Jaguars head coaching position and wanted to work with young quarterback Trevor Lawrence. However, the one thing Johnson did not want to do (according to multiple reports) was work with Trent Baalke.
In the Jaguars’ offseason press conference earlier this month, Baalke and owner Shad Khan met with the media and were both adamant that not cleaning house — despite Khan’s questions of what that phrase actually means — wouldn’t hinder the team’s coaching search. Khan even went so far as to say that if he felt it was going to be an issue and a candidate had a better option for a general manager, he would be open to making changes.
Obviously not.
The Jaguars are once again losing the battle of optics in the NFL offseason with their fans. The Jaguars fired head coach Doug Pederson after another disappointing season, as they should have, but one very specific move tainted anything else that would be coming. The Jaguars are in the end game of the search for their new head coach in the 2025 NFL offseason and no matter what direction they go, the fact of the matter is it’s always going to be tainted. The optics of whoever they hire is always going to look bad, at least in the immediate, because of one thing in particular.

When Jaguars owner Shad Khan decided to make the move of firing Pederson at the end of the season, virtually everyone was shocked that the firing of Baalke didn’t follow soon after. Even more surprise swept not just the fanbase, but the NFL as a whole, that not only was Baalke not going to be fired, but he would be heavily involved in the search for the Jacksonville Jaguars’ new head coach. There were reports as early as November during the 2024 season that Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson was the guy for the Jaguars and he wanted the job. As we got to the offseason those reports and rumors, the guy everyone with a coaching vacancy wanted, wanted the Jaguars job.
Could you believe that? Finally, the Jaguars are the apple of someone’s eye. Not just someone, but the guy everyone else says is the best and the guy everyone else wants.
But they screwed it up.
Because of Trent Baalke.
The Jaguars are set to meet with Tampa Bay Buccaneers offensive coordinator Liam Coen, former Las Vegas Raiders defensive coordinator Patrick Graham and former New York Jets head coach Robert Saleh in person this week for a second round of interviews for their vacant head coaching position. Most believe that the job now, with Johnson out of the mix, Coen’s if he wants it. Personally, I think Coen is a perfectly good hire for what the Jaguars want to accomplish, but because of how the Jaguars have conducted themselves this offseason, it’s going to taint whoever they’re going to hire in the short term.
The Jaguars have once again, in the short term, fumbled the bag.
Their optics on their decision-making processes look like a jumbled mess, once again.
The Jacksonville Jaguars coaching search has once again left fans and analysts scratching their heads, as the team seems to be losing the optics battle in their pursuit of a new head coach.Despite having a young and promising quarterback in Trevor Lawrence, the Jaguars have struggled to attract top coaching talent, with several high-profile candidates reportedly turning down the opportunity to lead the team.
This comes as no surprise to many, as the Jaguars have a history of turmoil and dysfunction within the organization, making it a less-than-desirable destination for many coaches.
With the team now looking to fill their head coaching vacancy once again, it remains to be seen if they will be able to turn things around and finally bring stability and success to the franchise.
As the coaching search continues, the Jaguars will need to work hard to improve their reputation and show potential candidates that they are serious about building a winning team. Otherwise, they may find themselves stuck in a cycle of mediocrity for years to come.

Karl-Anthony Towns and Josh Hart both participated in practice Sunday, but they are listed as questionable for the Knicks’ MLK Day matinee against the Hawks.
Towns has missed the past two games due to a right thumb issue and Hart played through what looked like a painful left shoulder injury suffered in the third quarter of Friday’s home loss to the Timberwolves.
The Knicks officially listed his injury as a neck/cervical compression.

Jalen Brunson said both of his teammates “looked fantastic” in practice, jokingly saying they’re both “great-looking men.”
Asked about Hart, his longtime teammate with Villanova and the Knicks, Brunson said, “Being able to play through pain, that’s just who [Hart] is, and he’s always been like that.”

If he can go, he goes,” Thibodeau added of Hart. “He’s tough-minded, and so it was good to have him come back and then to see him out there today. We’ll see how he responds [Monday].”
According to Brunson, playing on the MLK Day holiday “means a lot,” and he called it “a privilege to play this game in this league.”
“It’s more of a privilege to play on days like this. You play on Christmas Day, on MLK Day, it means a lot and especially what he stood for and what he believed in. I think most importantly, we continue to talk about him and praise him for the things he did and just be thankful because a lot of us wouldn’t be in the positions that we’re in.”
Thibodeau: “I think it’s an important day for not only our league, but our country. I think all the things that Martin Luther King stood for, it’s withstood the test of time. And it was the equality for all people, not one particular group. It was for everybody, and it’s really strong and powerful. And I think it represents our league.”
Zaccharie Risacher (adductor strain) and Larry Nance Jr. (hand) are out for the Hawks. Trae Young (Achilles) and Jalen Johnson (shoulder) are probable.
