  • Alex Karaban a game-time decision as UConn prepares for Big East battle against Butler; What to know

HARTFORD – The UConn men’s basketball program was involved in only eight games decided by five points or less over its last two national championship seasons. Through 18 games this year alone, the Huskies have matched that number, dropping to 4-4 in games decided by such a margin with a 68-63 loss to Creighton on Saturday.

It was the program’s first loss in Connecticut in nearly two years as its 28-game home winning streak came to an end.

One of those close wins came at Hinkle Fieldhouse on Dec. 21, when Butler cut down an 11-point deficit midway through the second half and fought back to get within two in the final seconds, but couldn’t overcome Alex Karaban‘s clutch shooting in a 78-74 Huskies’ victory.

Karaban has been up-and-down since, notably scoring eight points on just 3-for-12 shooting as the streak of nearly two calendar years came to an end on Saturday. He tweaked his ankle in the second half of the game and will be a game time decision, coach Dan Hurley said, on Tuesday.

“He didn’t practice (Monday), but he shot, so we’ll see how he feels with that ankle,” Hurley said. “It’s a sprain, I don’t think it’s as bad as the one he had last year against Providence, where he didn’t play in the St. John’s game at MSG.”

Tuesday’s game will be UConn’s fifth without standout freshman Liam McNeeley, who scored 17 points with five rebounds and seven assists in the first matchup against the Bulldogs. His absence has been critical as the Huskies continue to struggle on the defensive end, on both backboards and with their tenaciousness, which Hurley called out over the weekend.

Dom Amore: For Dan Hurley’s Huskies, the grace period has expired. It’s time for tenacity

“We’ve given up close to 47% from the field in Big East or high-major games this year. Our past teams, those numbers, even years when we had early exits in the tournament, we were holding people to 40% from the field,” Hurley said. “I think just our defense, our rebounding and our overall toughness, we’ve become a finesse offensive team that runs a lot of good stuff on offense, but we’ve got to get our toughness back… (Liam) will fix a lot of our issues when he gets back, but our defense overall, you’re not going anywhere doing that. You can’t compete for anything when you’re 126th.”

UConn, which is ranked No. 7 on offense and No. 127 on defense by KenPom, has never lost to Butler in the 10-game all-time series between the programs, which met for the first time in the 2011 national championship game.

The December loss for Butler came in the middle of a nine-game losing skid, which ended Wednesday as the Bulldogs claimed their first Big East win of the year against Seton Hall. They’ll come into the XL Center on Tuesday after six days without games.

It was the Bulldogs’ frontcourt that gave UConn the most trouble in their previous matchup, as 6-foot-9 forward Patrick McCaffery and 7-foot-1 center Andre Screen scored 17 points a piece. Screen grabbed 10 rebounds and blocked four shots as Butler claimed a 32-31 advantage on the glass – one of four times UConn has been outrebounded in its six Big East matchups. The last three have come in four games without McNeeley, who was the team’s second-leading rebounder when he went down.

Hurley will look for a bounce back game from Tarris Reed Jr. – one of the players who possesses the “nice guy” trait that he is trying to weed out – after he fouled out with just seven points in the previous matchup against Butler. Reed was minus-17 in 16 scoreless minutes on Saturday.

“We’ve got to play better across the board, especially the center spot,” Hurley said, reiterating that Reed needs to play with more force and ferocity. “(Butler is) hard to guard, with (Pierre) Brooks and (Jahmyl Telfort), McCaffery, it tells you just how hard it is to still win Big East games, no matter what the NET says, no matter what the KenPom says or any of the analytics. It’s a tough league to win games in, especially if you look at some of the firepower that they’ve got at the wing there and two pretty good centers and good guard play – and a great coach in Thad (Matta).

“It’s gonna be a hard game for us. We’re gonna be coming in banged up, short rest – they’ve had a week off – and we’re gonna need a great crowd and a real pick-me-up from playing in XL after the haunting experience at Gampel the other day… In an instance where you just lost one at one place, I kind of like the fact that I’m going to my other place.”

As the team continues to find its identity, more will and force across the board, those close games will persist. For now, especially if Karaban joins McNeeley in street clothes, the Huskies just need to find a way to win.

“These games are tougher, they’re grittier, it’s good to be a part of. It’s fun. You want to be in close games, you want to be in these Big East battles,” fifth-year point guard Hassan Diarra said. “We have to continue to do the right things so we can come out on the right side of them.”

UConn announces plan for Coaches vs. Cancer

Dan Hurley’s wife, Andrea, will again lead her memorial button initiative as the Huskies host their annual Coaches vs. Cancer game on Jan. 29 against DePaul. Fans will be able to find Andrea at a table on the XL Center concourse near section 124 when the doors open at 6:30, where they will be able to have a printed out photo (3″ or smaller) turned into a memorial button. Fans can also pre-submit photos by email at UConnHuskies.com/CvC. Cancer awareness ribbons will also be available at the table for fans to wear.

New this season, doctors from the Carole and Ray Neag Comprehensive Cancer Center at UConn Health will be set up on the concourse to offer free cancer screenings and education, as well as skin cancer checks prior to the game in the atrium. Patients from the Connecticut Children’s Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders will be honored on the court during the game.

    Pregame reading:

As UConn basketball gears up for a crucial Big East battle against Butler, all eyes are on star forward Alex Karaban. The freshman standout is currently listed as a game-time decision for the matchup, leaving fans and analysts alike on the edge of their seats.

Karaban, who has been a key contributor for the Huskies this season, is dealing with a nagging injury that has sidelined him for the past few games. His presence on the court has been sorely missed, as his scoring ability and defensive prowess have been instrumental in UConn’s success.

If Karaban is able to suit up for the game against Butler, it could be a game-changer for the Huskies. His ability to stretch the floor and create mismatches for opposing defenses could give UConn the edge they need to come out on top in what is sure to be a hard-fought battle.

However, if Karaban is unable to play, the Huskies will need to rely on their depth and resilience to secure a victory. Players like Tyrese Martin and Adama Sanogo will need to step up and fill the void left by Karaban’s absence, providing scoring and leadership on both ends of the court.

Regardless of Karaban’s availability, one thing is for certain – this game is shaping up to be a must-watch matchup in the Big East. Both teams are hungry for a win and will leave it all on the court in pursuit of victory.

Stay tuned for updates on Alex Karaban’s status and be sure to tune in to see how UConn fares against Butler in what is sure to be a thrilling showdown.

  • Pokémon Go Steeled Resolve Timed Research quest steps, best Choose Path choice and Go Battle Week Dual Destiny

Steeled Resolve is themed around Steel-type Pokémon to celebrate the release of Rookidee, along with its evolutions Corvisquire and Corviknight, in Pokémon Go!

Alongside hunting down these new Gen 8 Pokémon, you can complete the Steeled Resolve field research tasks and Steeled Resolve Timed Research quest. Though it’s a good idea to know the best Choose Path choice between ‘Train with Blanche’ and ‘Train with Cliff’ before you make a start on this quest. There’s also some Pokémon Go bonuses to enjoy and a selection of featured attacks for a special selection of Pokémon.

Steeled Resolve, however, isn’t the only Pokémon Go event running this week – you can also partake in Go Battle Week: Dual Destiny. Bringing a host of bonuses, including an increase of the daily battle set limit, now is the time to enjoy the Go Battle League.

‘Steeled Resolve Timed Research’ quest steps in Pokémon Go

The Steeled Resolve Timed Research is the Pokémon Go quest released during the event sharing its name. As you can tell, it’s a Timed Research quest and that means you must complete it before Sunday 26th January at 8pm (local time) if you want to earn all of its rewards.

Steeled Resolve is also a branching quest where, after completing its first quest step, you need to pick one of two paths – Train with Blanche or Train with Cliff. This decision changes two of the rewards you receive from this quest, so it’s a good idea to know what these rewards are before you make your decision. Especially since you can not change your path choice after it’s made. To help you out in this regard, we’ve outlined the quest steps for each path and taken a look at which Choose Path is best further along in this guide.

For now, let’s take a look at the Steeled Resolve quest steps which occur before you select a path. Watch out for spoilers!

Thank you to TwitchSpencxr from reddit for the help with this information.

‘Steeled Resolve’ Step 1 of 3

    • Catch 15 Pokémon – 5 Ultra Balls
    • Spin 5 PokéStops or Gyms – Bunnelby encounter
    • Explore 2km – Paldean Wooper encounter

Rewards: 1000 XP and 1000 Stardust

‘Train with Blanche’ path quest steps in Steeled Resolve Timed Research

Here you’ll find the challenges and rewards you’ll receive for selecting the ‘Train with Blanche’ path through the Steeled Resolve Timed Research quest in Pokémon Go. Since you can’t change your path choice after it’s made, it’s a good idea to take a look at these steps and rewards before making your choice. Just watch out for spoilers!

‘Train with Blanche’ Step 2 of 3

    • Use 5 supereffective Charged Attacks – 500 Stardust
    • Power up Pokémon 5 times – 2 Fast TMs
    • Battle in the Go Battle League 5 times – 2 Charged TMs

Rewards: 2000 XP and Marill encounter.

‘Train with Blanche’ Step 3 of 3

    • Catch 25 Pokémon – 10 Ultra Balls
    • Power up Pokémon 10 times – 1 Silver Pinap Berry
    • Win in the Go Battle League – Steelix encounter

Rewards: 3000 XP, 2000 Stardust and a Magnetic Lure Module.

‘Train with Cliff’ path quest steps in Steeled Resolve Timed Research

Below lie the ‘Train with Cliff’ path challenges and rewards for the Steeled Resolve Timed Research quest in Pokémon Go. Remember – you can’t change your path choice after it’s made, so, if you’re having trouble making your mind up, take a look at our best Choose Path choice section. Spoilers also lie below.

‘Train with Cliff’ Step 2 of 3

Rewards: 2000 XP and Shadow Machop encounter.

‘Train with Cliff’ Step 3 of 3

    • Catch 25 Pokémon – 10 Ultra Balls
    • Power up Pokémon 10 times – 1 Silver Pinap Berry
    • Win in the Go Battle League – Marowak encounter

Rewards: 3000 XP, 2000 Stardust and a Magnetic Lure Module.

Train with Blanche or Train with Cliff: Best Choose Path choice for Steeled Resolve

When it comes to picking between the ‘Train with Blanche’ or ‘Train with Cliff’ paths for the Steeled Resolve Timed Research quest in Pokémon Go, which path for you is, and I know this is annoying, subjective. There is a way, however, to easily decide which path you want to take and that’s down to the Pokémon encounters you receive.

All of the challenges and the majority of the rewards remain the same between the two paths aside from the two Pokémon you can earn. ‘Train with Blanche’ offers a Marill and Steelix, while ‘Train with Cliff’ lets you catch a Shadow Machop and Marowak.

Steelix is earned from the ‘Train with Blanche’ path, Marowak from ‘Train with Cliff’.

For this reason, you can make your decision based on either what Pokémon you need for the Pokédex, for a Go Battle League team or whether you want to add some small progress to one of your catch medals.

    Marill evolves into Azumarill.

The Marill ‘Train with Blanche’ rewards you with can be evolved into a Azumarill, which remains to be one of the best Pokémon you can use in the Great League. Since Pokémon earned from research quests tend to have better IV stats, this is a great way to add a strong Azumarill to your team. Meanwhile, if you’re missing Steelix from your Pokédex, then this path lets you fill in this entry without having to find a Metal Coat nor the required Onix Candy.

On the other hand, the Shadow Machop offered by ‘Train with Cliff’ should not be purified since Shadow Machamp is one of the best Fighting-type Pokémon in the game. Whether you want it for raids or the Master League, Shadow Machamp will have your back. Admittedly the Marowak encounter is less useful since it is not a Shadow Pokémon. You’ll be getting a regular Kanto Marowak here, but it can still come in handy.

Personally, I’ll be going with the ‘Train with Cliff’ path since I really want a powerful Shadow Machamp for my team. (And I have more than enough Machop Candy to properly power it up.) The advantage of being able to use it in both raids and the Master League makes it a good addition to multiple teams I have running in Pokémon Go.

Steeled Resolve field research tasks in Pokémon Go

Steeled Resolve event-exclusive research tasks can be earned by spinning PokéStop during this Pokémon Go event. As always these tasks can be saved in your field research collection and completed after the event ends.

Here are the Steeled Resolve field research tasks in Pokémon Go:

    • Catch 5 Pokémon reward – Clefairy, Jigglypuff or Togetic encounter
    • Power up Pokémon 5 times reward – Hoppip, Dunsparce or Barboach encounter
    • Battle in the Go Battle League reward – Cubone, Marill or Inkay encounter
    • Spin 5 PokéStops or Gyms reward – 5 Poké Balls, 3 Super Potions or 2 Revives

Thank you raggedy10 from reddit for the help with this information.

Cubone and Hoppip encounters can be earned through Steeled Resolve event-exclusive research tasks.

Everything we know about Steeled Resolve in Pokémon Go

Steeled Resolve is running until Sunday 26th January at 8pm (local time). The Go Battle Week: Dual Destiny event is running alongside Steeled Resolve, which we’ve covered in the next section.

Returning to Steeled Resolve, this event has two bonuses. The first is a Shadow Pokémon related bonus where, once again, you can use a Charged TM to make these Pokémon forget the Frustration Charged Attack. The second bonus sees Magnetic Lure Modules attract different Pokémon during this event, including Onix, Beldum, Sheildon and Rookidee.

More exciting than the bonuses (and that’s not hard in my opinion) is the release of three new Pokémon – Rookidee, Corvisquire and Corviknight. These three Pokémon make up the Rookidee evolution line of Gen 8 and, while the first two Pokémon are simply Flying-types, Corviknight adds Steel to become a dual type. If you want to learn more about these new Pokémon, check out our how to get Rookidee in Pokémon Go page.

Steeled Resolve is also meant to mark the arrival of a new set of quest steps for the Dual Destiny seasonal Special Research quest. Yet, at the time of writing, we’re still waiting for those quest steps to be released. When they are made available, both this and the Dual Destiny Special Research quest page will be updated.

The following Pokémon are appearing more frequently during Steeled Resolve:

    • Clefairy
    • Machop
    • Totodile
    • Marill
    • Hoppip
    • Paldean Wooper
    • Shieldon
    • Bunnelby
    • Carbink
    • Mareanie

You can battle these Pokémon in raids during Steeled Resolve:

One Star Three Star Five Star Mega
Lickitung Muk Deoxys Attack Form (until 10am local time on Friday 24th January) Mega Gallade (until 10am local time on Friday 24th January)
Skorupi Delcatty Deoxys Defense Form (until 10am local time on Friday 24th January) Mega Medicham (from 10am local time on Friday 24th January)
Pancham Skuntank Dialga (from 10am local time on Friday 24th January)
    Amura Lumineon

Spinning a PokéStop during Steeled Resolve may result in you receiving an event-exclusive 2km egg, which can hatch:

    • Shieldon
    • Carbink
    • Mareanie
    • Rookidee

Shieldon and Carbink can be hatched from the event-exclusive eggs.

If you fancy giving a Pokémon a featured attack, then the Steeled Resolve event is the time to do so. Just keep in mind that these featured attacks are earned via evolution, so you will need the previous Pokémon in the evolutionary line to grab the new attack.

The Steeled Resolve featured attacks are:

Machamp – Karate Chop (Fighting-type Fast Attack)

    • Evolve a Machoke into Machamp
    • Gyms and Raid Power – 10
    • Trainer Battles Power – 5

Feraligatr – Hydro Cannon (Water-type Charged Attack)

    • Evolve a Croconaw into Feraligatr
    • Gyms and Raid Power – 90
    • Trainer Battles Power – 80

Quagsire – Aqua Tail (Water-type Charged Attack)

    • Evolve a Wooper into Quagsire
    • Gyms and Raid Power – 50
    • Trainer Battles Power – 55

Lickilicky – Body Slam (Normal-type Charged Attack)

    • Evolve a Lickitung into Lickilicky
    • Gyms and Raid Power – 50
    • Trainer Battles Power – 50

Corviknight – Iron Head (Steel-type Charged Attack)

    • Evolve a Corvisquire into Corviknight
    • Gyms and Raid Power – 60
    • Trainer Battles Power – 70

Clodsire – Megahorn (Bug-type Charged Attack)

    • Evolve a Paldean Wooper into Clodsire
    • Gyms and Raid Power – 105
    • Trainer Battles Power – 110

There are, of course, PokéStop Showcases running throughout Steeled Resolve!

Finally, as with the majority of Pokémon Go events now, there’s a pay-to-play Timed Research quest available during Steeled Resolve. Costing $5, or the equivalent in your local currency, this purchase unlocks a double hatch Stardust bonus alongside the quest itself. The purchase is nonrefundable, can’t be done using PokéCoin and can be given to players you’re Great Friends or higher with. Just make sure you complete the quest before 11:59pm (local time) on Sunday 26th January or else it will vanish forever,

The Dual Destiny Season is here! The Steeled Resolve event is running and it’s brought Rookidee, Corvisquire and Corviknight to Pokémon Go.

You can now catch Dynamax Pokémon through Max Battles. First, however, you need to visit Power Spots to collect Max Particles and complete the To the Max! quest.

Don’t forget to try out Routes, Gift Exchange and Party Play while you’re hunting down rare Pokémon, fighting in the Go Battle League or competing in PokéStop Showcases.

Go Battle Week Dual Destiny in Pokémon Go

The Go Battle Week: Dual Destiny event is running alongside Steeled Resolve, ending at 11:59pm (local time) on Sunday 26th January, in Pokémon Go. Thanks to its bonuses, this event is perfect for anyone who partakes in the Go Battle League or needs to do some work towards a level up challenge.

Firstly, the number of battle sets you can complete every day has been increased to 20. This means you can compete in 100 battles each day – coming to a total of 600 battles if you max out every day!

The win rewards have also seen some changes for this event. The Pokémon you earn from win rewards will have a wider variance when it comes to their Attack, Defense and HP stats. Meanwhile, you’ll earn quadruple Stardust from win rewards. (This Stardust bonus does not affect end-of-set rewards.)

Finally, there’s a free Timed Research quest focused around battling and, if you complete it, you’ll earn the Grimsely Shoes avatar item. (Though players who’ve already earned this item will not receive the shoes for a second time.)

The Grimsley outfit, but you only get the blue shoes. | Image credit: Niantic

When it comes to which leagues will be active during Go Battle Week: Dual Destiny, it’s important to note that both the Master League and Color Cup: Great League Edition will be running until 4am (GMT) in the UK, 5am (CET) in Europe, 11pm (EST) on the eastern US coast and 8pm (PST) on the western US coast.

Once this time passes, the Great League, Ultra League and Master League will all be live until Tuesday 28th January. So whether it’s to earn medal progress or to use your preferred team, pick which league you want to focus on and get battling.

Hope you enjoy both Steeled Resolve and Go Battle Week: Dual Destiny!

  • “Battle for prestige”: where to watch the match of the 7th round of the Europa League Dynamo – Galatasaray, bookmakers’ favorite, recent preparations

Today, January 21, at 17:30 Kyiv time in the Turkish capital Istanbul, Dynamo Kyiv will meet Galatasaray Istanbul at the Rams Park stadium in the 7th round of the Europa League group stage. UNN tells you where to watch the match, who is the bookmakers’ favorite, and the latest news from the teams’ camps.

    Stadium, referee team, broadcast

The match will be refereed by an Estonian team of referees led by 43-year-old Kristo Tohver. He will be assisted by his compatriots Silver Koiv and Sander Saga on the edges of the field. The fourth referee is Kevin Kaivoya, and the VAR referee is Marco Liiva.

Kristo Tohver is known to the fans of Zorya Luhansk, as it was the Estonian specialist who refereed the match between Slavia Prague and Zorya in 2023 as part of the Europa League qualifiers, in which Luhansk lost 0-2.

Tohver also worked at various matches of the Ukrainian junior national teams.

    Image

Bookmakers give a strong preference to Galatasaray, whose victory can be bet on with odds of 1.2. Dynamo’s victory is given at odds of 9.8, which is not surprising, as the Kyiv team lost all 6 of their matches in the Europa League. The draw is available at odds of 6.5.

The match will be shown live on Megogo.

    Previous matches

As already mentioned, Dynamo Kyiv has never won the current Europa League draw. “The White and Blues are in last place in the standings and have lost potential chances to advance. Kyiv has 6 defeats and only 1 goal scored.

It is worth noting that Dynamo last played an official match in December last year, after which the Ukrainian championship went on hiatus. Back then, Kyiv narrowly defeated Veres 1-0. However, the Kyiv team played 5 matches at the training camp, in which they once lost to German Magdeburg 3-1, drew with Polish Lodz, and celebrated victories in the remaining matches.

Galatasaray, on the other hand, is going strong in both the Turkish league and the Europa League. In the Turkish Super League, the Lions are confidently leading without losing a single match – with 16 wins and 3 draws, they have scored 51 points and are 6 points ahead of their nearest pursuer, fellow countrymen Fenerbahçe.

Galatasaray is also in the lead group of the main stage of the Europa League, being one of five teams that have not suffered a single defeat in the current European Cup draw.

“The Lions started with a 3-1 home win over Greek side PAOK, followed by a 2-2 draw away to Latvian side RFS, leading 2-0 during the match. This was followed by home victories over Swedish side Elfsborg (4:3) and London’s Tottenham (3:2), as well as away draws with Dutch side AZ (1:1) and Swedish side Malmö (2:2). It is noteworthy that Galatasaray, having scored 15 goals, along with French club Lyon, has the best attack among the 36 participants in the main stage.

It is also worth noting that Turkish forward Yunus Akgün of Galatasaray shares the top spot in the Europa League (5 goals) with Rasmus Heylund (Manchester United), Samu (Porto) and Barnabas Varga (Ferencvaros).

    Image

It should also be noted that the last time Dynamo and Galatasaray met was in April 2022, when Kyiv confidently defeated the Turks 3-1.

    Before the match

On the eve of the match, Dynamo head coach Oleksandr Shovkovskyi said that his team would play against one of the grandees of Turkish football.

Let’s be honest: we will be playing against one of the giants of Turkish football, a team that has been successful in recent years and has made acquisitions worth more than 150 million. They have experienced players from different championships, and this certainly adds weight. They are in sixth place in the Europa League and have a good chance of going further. Also, if I’m not mistaken, Galatasaray is one of the best in terms of the number of goals scored. I repeat, we are well aware of who we will play against. We’re talking about our opponent, but looking at them, we’ve been preparing for this game ourselves. And we will try to do our best to demonstrate quality, attitude and do everything to show a decent game. And the result is made up of many aspects: mistakes, completed chances, etc

    – Shovkovsky said.

Before the match, Kyiv captain Vitaliy Buyalsky emphasized that the match would be a “battle for prestige.”

“I can say that it will be more of a battle for prestige, because we no longer have any objectives. We have the emblem on our chest and the pride we have to show in tomorrow’s game. I think each of us will give our best. We will show that the place where we are now is a coincidence,” Buyalsky said.

Before the match, it became known that Dynamo would be without key players – defender Denys Popov and support player Volodymyr Brazhko – who remained in Belek to recover, where the team will return immediately after the match.

    Denis Popov

“As for your question directly, in addition to Brazhko, Denis Popov will definitely not be able to help us tomorrow  (ed. – January 21). All other players are ready to take the field,” Shovkovsky said.

    Volodymyr Brazhko

Also during the winter transfer window, Volodymyr Shepelev and Oleksandr Andrievskyi, who has already signed a contract with Zhytomyr’s Polissia, left Kyiv as free agents. “Defender Naveen Malysh also left the Bilo-Syni on loan, joining Vorskla Poltava.

On the eve of the match, Galatasaray coach Buruk Okan shared his expectations for the match: “Don’t be misled by Dynamo’s place in the Europa League, because they are the leaders in the Ukrainian championship, and they have never lost in the UPL. Of course, there are differences from the Europa League, but they have not lost. I can say that our opponent is a good team.”

He also said that Eyüp Aydın, Roland Sallai and Gabriel Sara will not play in the match.

“Our bench has shrunk. We are missing Ayup Aydin and Roland Sallai. Tomorrow will be important for our bench, but we have a strong 11 players. The players who will take the field have enough qualities to win such matches. We had planned for him to train today (Gabriel Sara – ed.), but we’ll see. We will still have time to make a final decision on whether he will be in the squad,” Okan said on the eve of the match.

Another scandalous footballer, Mauro Icardi, who has been undergoing treatment for a knee injury since November, will not help the Turks.

At the same time, journalists argued that Dries Mertens and Victor Osimhen, Galatasaray’s main stars and at the same time an unstoppable striking force, should play against Dynamo from the first minutes.

The Huskers return home riding a four-game winning streak after a thrilling 87-84 overtime win at Iowa on Thursday night.

Big Ten Freshman-of-the-Year candidate Britt Prince led five Huskers in double figures with 22 points on a career-high five three-pointers, while adding seven rebounds, five assists and a career-high six steals in a tremendous all-around effort.

Three-time All-Big Ten center Alexis Markowski added 19 points and seven boards, while sophomores Jessica Petrie and Logan Nissley each added 13 points to help the Huskers overcome a 64-53 fourth-quarter deficit to earn their first win in Iowa City since 2018.

True freshman Amiah Hargrove added a huge night with her first career double-double with 10 points and a career-high 11 rebounds for the Big Red.

Monday’s game with Wisconsin will feature several significant streaks. Nebraska puts the Big Ten’s longest home winning streak (14) on the line, along with an eight-game winning streak in the series with Wisconsin. The Huskers have won nine straight in Lincoln against the Badgers, who have never won inside Pinnacle Bank Arena.

Wisconsin, which is trying to snap a six-game overall losing streak, brings its best team to Lincoln since Nebraska joined the Big Ten in 2011-12. All six losses during UW’s streak have come against NET top-50 Big Ten teams, including Thursday’s 80-69 loss to AP No. 9 and unbeaten Ohio State.

    Husker Hot Takes
    • Husker freshman Britt Prince led Nebraska to its first road wins at Rutgers (Jan. 12) and at Iowa (Jan. 16) since 2018 by averaging 23.0 points, 6.5 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 3.0 steals. The 5-11 guard’s road swing included a career-high 24 points at Rutgers, and career highs of five three-pointers and six steals at Iowa. Prince has increased her season averages to 13.5 points, 4.4 rebounds and team bests of 3.2 assists and 1.9 steals. Prince, who has produced double figures in five straight games, owns 13 double-digit efforts this season, including four 20-point performances.

    • Lisa Leslie Award candidate Alexis Markowski averaged 16.5 points and 10.5 rebounds in getting her first career wins at Iowa and Rutgers. The only Husker to start all 18 games this year, the 6-3 center from Lincoln owns team-best averages of 14.7 points and 8.3 rebounds per game. She has scored in double figures in all four games of Nebraska’s current winning streak, including a career-high 28 points in NU’s last home game in an 85-80 win over No. 20 Michigan State (Jan. 8). Markowski owns a school-record 47 career double-doubles, which ranks fourth among active NCAA Division I players. Her most recent double-double came with 14 points and 14 rebounds at Rutgers.

    • Sophomore Jessica Petrie contributed the two best games of her career in NU’s back-to-back road wins, stepping up in place of injured 2024 Big Ten Freshman-of-the-Year Natalie Potts. Petrie, a 6-2 power forward from Gold Coast, Australia, averaged 12.5 points and 7.5 rebounds at Rutgers and Iowa. Petrie is averaging 8.7 points and 4.2 rebounds in starting six straight Big Ten games.

    • Freshmen Amiah Hargrove and Petra Bozan also have stepped up to fill the void left by the loss of Potts to a season-ending knee injury (Nov. 19). Hargrove has scored in double figures five times in the last 12 games, including her first career double-double with 10 points and a career-high 11 rebounds in the win at Iowa. In Big Ten play, Hargrove is averaging 6.6 points and 5.0 rebounds.

    • Bozan has played a major role in support behind Markowski at center while adding flexibility. The 6-5 center is averaging 5.4 points and 3.5 rebounds, including significant contributions in Big Ten wins over Minnesota (9 points, 5 rebounds), Penn State (8 points, 6 rebounds) and Rutgers (8 points, 4 rebounds).

    • Nebraska’s success on its recent Big Ten road trip was more significant because the Huskers had to overcome the loss of fourth-year guard Allison Weidner to a season-ending right leg injury in practice on Jan. 11 before traveling to Rutgers. It is the third serious injury for Weidner, ending her third straight season prematurely. Weidner, a 5-10 guard from Humphrey, Neb., was coming off her best game of the season with 11 points and six assists in Nebraska’s 85-80 win over No. 20 Michigan State (Jan. 8). The Huskers dedicated their performance at Rutgers to Weidner and have now dedicated their efforts this season to both Weidner and Potts.

    Husker Numbers to Watch
    • Markowski (1,105) needs five rebounds to catch Jordan Hooper at No. 3 (1,110, 2011-14) and just nine rebounds to match Emily Cady (1,114, 2012-15) at No. 2 on Nebraska’s all-time rebounding list. Janet Smith (1,280, 1979-82) owns the top spot on NU’s career rebound chart.

    • With seven rebounds at Iowa, Markowski joined Hooper (2,357 points) as just the second Husker in history to reach the combined career milestones of 1,600 points and 1,100 rebounds.

Alexis Markowski (47) owns the top spot on Nebraska’s career double-doubles list, seven more than first-team All-Americans Kelsey Griffin (40, 2006-10) and Jordan Hooper (40, 2011-14).

    • Markowski (1,627) ranks No. 12 on Nebraska’s all-time scoring list. She needs 46 points to match first-round WNBA Draft pick Lindsey Moore (2010-13) at No. 11 on the NU all-time scoring list with 1,673 points.

    Nebraska Notables

    • Over the past two seasons combined (2022-23 & 2023-24), Nebraska center Alexis Markowski had more total rebounds (691) than any other Big Ten player. Fifth-year forward Kendall Bostic (686) from Illinois was right behind Markowski. The only other Big Ten player to collect as many as 550 total rebounds over the previous two seasons was Iowa’s Caitlin Clark (557). Indiana All-America center Mackenzie Holmes had 442 – nearly 250 fewer rebounds than Markowski.

    • Nebraska has claimed two of the past three Big Ten Freshman of the Year awards, following the 2024 honor earned by Natalie Potts. Alexis Markowski was the 2022 Big Ten Freshman of the Year.

    • Since Nebraska joined the Big Ten for the 2011-12 season, no other school has won more Big Ten Conference Freshman-of-the-Year awards than the Huskers – Nebraska (3), Maryland (3), Minnesota (3), Ohio State (2), Michigan (1), Iowa (1), Northwestern (1).

    Scouting the Wisconsin Badgers

    • Marisa Moseley brings her most talented Wisconsin team to Lincoln in her fourth season at the helm of the Badgers. Wisconsin, which is coming off a 15-17 season that included a trip to the Great Eight in the WNIT for its first postseason appearance since 2010-11.

    • The Badgers (10-8, 1-6 Big Ten) are led by junior forward Serah Williams, who is battling for All-Big Ten honors while averaging team bests of 18.6 points and 11.6 rebounds per game, including 20 points and 17 rebounds in an 80-69 loss at AP No. 9 Ohio State in Madison on Thursday night.

    • Sophomore Carter McCray, a 6-1 center, has solidified Wisconsin’s play inside by averaging 9.5 points and 6.8 rebounds as a starter alongside Williams.

    • Ronnie Porter provides the motor on both offense and defense for the Badger backcourt. The 5-4 junior is averaging 9.1 points, 3.9 rebounds and team bests of 4.6 assists and 1.8 steals. However, Ohio State held Porter and McCray to a combined six points in UW’s loss Thursday.

    • Graduate guard Natalie Leuzinger has added solid play with 8.1 points and 2.3 rebounds while hitting 40.4 percent of her three-point attempts.

    • Graduate transfer Tess Myers has added consistency for the Badgers by averaging 7.0 points, 1.9 rebounds, while hitting a team-high 38 three-pointers (.345), including six triples to finish with 18 points in Thursday’s loss to Ohio State.

    • The Badgers also have been bolstered off the bench by the return of 6-2 graduate guard Halle Douglass, who is averaging 4.6 points, 3.2 rebounds and 2.5 assists in 21 minutes per game.

    • Junior Lily Krahn (4.8 ppg), who erupted for 16 points on 4-of-8 three-point shooting against Ohio State, sophomore D’Yanis Jimeniz (2.1 ppg) and freshman Jovana Spasovski (2.0 ppg) have been regulars off the bench for the Badgers.

    • Wisconsin has been outscored by an average of 66.1-65.9 on the season. The Badgers are hitting 43.4 percent of their field goal attempts, including 33 percent of their threes. UW carries a plus-3.3 rebound margin but a minus-3.1 team turnover margin.

    Nebraska vs. Wisconsin Series History
    • Nebraska leads the all-time series with Wisconsin 16-7, including an eight-game winning streak.

    • The Huskers battled their way to a 69-57 road win over Wisconsin at the Kohl Center in Madison (Jan. 4, 2024) in the only meeting between the teams last season.

    • Nebraska improved to a perfect 9-0 in Lincoln as Big Ten foes with an 82-54 victory over the Badgers in the last meeting at Pinnacle Bank Arena (Dec. 7, 2022).

    • The Huskers are 16-2 against the Badgers since joining the Big Ten (2011-12), with the only losses coming in back-to-back road games at the Kohl Center in 2017 and 2018.

    • Nebraska’s nine-game home winning streak against the Badgers began at the Bob Devaney Sports Center with a 68-59 win on Feb. 19, 2012.

    • Wisconsin has never defeated Nebraska in Lincoln in regulation, as the Badgers knocked off the Huskers 80-74 in overtime (Dec. 7, 1990) and 92-85 in OT (Nov. 21, 1999) in the first two meetings between the schools at the Devaney Center.

    • Wisconsin earned its last series win with a 70-69 victory on a controversial buzzer-beater at the Kohl Center (Jan. 27, 2018). Nebraska leads the series 7-5 in Madison, including 7-2 as Big Ten foes.

    • Wisconsin won the first five meetings in series history, dating back to a 79-74 win over the Huskers in Madison, Wis., on Jan. 5, 1979. NU’s first win came with a 75-69 victory at Madison (Jan. 12, 2012).

    Markowski In NU’s 1,500-Point/1,000-Rebound Club

Alexis Markowski has increased her career totals to 1,627 points and 1,105 rebounds. She is just the fourth Nebraska player to achieve the combined career milestones of 1,500 points and 1,000 rebounds.

    • The quality of that short list is undeniable. Karen Jennings (2,405 points/1,000 rebounds, 1990-93) won the 1993 Wade Trophy, was a first-team All-American and the 1993 Big Eight Player of the Year.

    • Kelsey Griffin (2,033 points/1,019 rebounds, 2006-10) won the 2010 Senior CLASS Award, was a first-round WNBA Draft pick, a first-team All-American and the 2010 Big 12 Player of the Year.

    • Jordan Hooper (2,357 points/1,110 rebounds, 2011-14) was a first-team All-American, the 2014 Big Ten Player of the Year and the first pick of the second round in the 2014 WNBA Draft.

    • Markowski and Hooper are the only players in Nebraska history to reach the combined career milestones of 1,600 points and 1,100 rebounds.

Markowski Joins Elite Rebounders in NU History

    • Nebraska All-America candidate Alexis Markowski joined one of the most elite groups in Husker history by pulling down her 1,000th career rebound in the fourth quarter at Creighton (Nov. 22).

    • The 6-3 center from Lincoln became just the sixth Husker women’s basketball player and just the eighth Nebraska men’s or women’s player to reach the 1,000 milestone on the boards.

    • Markowski finished the game with 1,001 career boards to push past 1993 Wade Trophy winner Karen Jennings into the No. 5 spot on the Husker women’s basketball career chart.

    • Markowski has pushed her career rebound total to 1,105, passing first-team All-American Kelsey Griffin at No. 4 on Nebraska’s career rebound list. Markowski enters the Wisconsin game just five rebounds behind first-team All-American and 2014 Big Ten Player of the Year Jordan Hooper (1,110) at No. 3 on the Nebraska all-time rebound list. Hooper grabbed her rebounds in 4,030 career minutes (11.0 rp40), while Markowski’s boards have come in just 3,066 minutes (14.4 rp40).

Prince Battling for Big Ten All-Freshman Honors

Britt Prince is off to one of the best starts by a freshman in the Big Ten Conference in 2024-25. The 5-11 point guard from Omaha ranks second among the Huskers with 13.5 points, while adding 4.4 rebounds and team bests with 3.2 assists and 1.9 steals, after her 22-point, seven-rebound, five-assist, career-high six steal effort that included a career-high five three-pointers at Iowa (Jan. 16). She also played a career-high 41 minutes in Iowa City.

    • The two-time Gatorade and MaxPreps Player of the Year has scored in double figures 13 times, including a career-high 24 points on 8-of-15 shooting in a Big Ten road win at Rutgers (Jan. 12). She added six rebounds and three assists against the Scarlet Knights. Prince scored 10 points in the decisive fourth quarter.

    • Her performance at Rutgers surpassed her previous career-high 23 points on 10-of-13 shooting in Nebraska’s record-setting 113-70 win over South Dakota (Nov. 16). She added four assists and two steals in front of a sellout crowd at the Sanford Pentagon in Sioux Falls.

    • She added 20 points and six rebounds in a loss at Creighton (Nov. 22).

    • Prince had a game-high 19 points to go with five rebounds in a low-scoring win over Tarleton State (Dec. 11). She hit three threes against the Texans and went 6-for-6 at the line.

    • Prince contributed 13 points on 4-of-5 shooting in a win over Kansas City (Nov. 26), before notching her fifth straight double-digit performance with a game-high 14 points in a win over Lindenwood (Dec. 3). She also had 13 points and a career-high six assists against North Alabama (Nov. 19) during the five-game stretch. Prince added a career-high two blocks against the Lions.

    • Prince had 10 points, four rebounds, two assists and two steals in NU’s win over No. 20 Michigan State (Jan. 8). It was her third straight double-digit effort, joining 13 points, four rebounds, four assists and four steals in a win over Penn State (Jan. 5) and 10 points, a career-high-tying eight rebounds and four assists at No. 4 USC (Jan. 1).

    • She became the first Husker freshman point guard to reach 100 points in her first eight games, when she put up seven points and seven boards in a win over Minnesota (Dec. 8). The only other Husker point guard to score 100 points in 10 or fewer games is Nicole Kubik (10 games, 1996-97).

    • One of Nebraska’s most efficient players, Prince is shooting 45.5 percent from the field, including 39.4 percent (26-66) from three-point range, and 85.7 percent (42-49) at the free throw line.

    • Prince, who won four consecutive Nebraska Class B state high school championships at PBA while playing for her mother, Ann Prince at Elkhorn North (2021-22-23-24), was the No. 16 recruit in the country according to Prospects Nation and No. 28 according to ESPN.

    • An honorable-mention high school All-American last year by the Naismith award and MaxPreps, Prince produced one of the best senior seasons in Nebraska high school history in 2023-24. She averaged 27.0 points, 10.3 rebounds, 6.3 assists and 2.9 steals. She led the state in both scoring and assists as a senior on her way to finishing with a Class B record 2,491 points, surpassing Husker All-American Jordan Hooper’s previous mark of 2,078.

    • Prince also matched Hooper for No. 2 in state tournament history with 271 career points.

    • In addition to being a four-time Super-State selection in basketball, Prince was a six-time gold medalist and two-time silver medalist at the Nebraska State Track & Field Championships.

    • She was the 2024 Nebraska Girls Athlete of the Year across all sports.

    • Prince missed Nebraska’s win over Southeastern Louisiana (Nov. 9) with a lower leg injury, but returned for six points, four assists and three steals as a starter in a win over Southern (Nov. 12).

    Husker Freshmen Featuring Efficiency

Britt Prince is the leader of a talented freshman trio for Nebraska. While Prince has earned headlines by starting at point guard and putting up some of the best numbers in history by a Big Red rookie, fellow freshmen Amiah Hargrove and Petra Bozan have been dynamic inside.

    • Hargrove is coming off her first career double-double and fifth double-figure scoring effort of the season with 10 points and a career-high 11 rebounds in a career-high 28 minutes in an overtime win at Iowa (Jan. 16). She hit 3-of-4 shots including 2-of-3 threes and both free throws against the Hawkeyes while adding a career-high two blocks.

    • Hargrove erupted for a career-high 13 points in a win over Tarleton State (Dec. 11). She hit 5-of-6 shots, including a three-pointer, while adding three rebounds and a steal. She also led Nebraska with 12 points on 4-of-6 shooting at No. 1 UCLA (Dec. 29). She also had 10 points and eight rebounds in a Big Ten-opening win over previously unbeaten Minnesota (Dec. 8).

    • The 6-1 forward from Christopher, Ill., added 10 points and seven rebounds in a win over Kansas City (Nov. 26). She made back-to-back starts against Chattanooga (Dec. 15) and No. 17 Georgia Tech (Dec. 21). Hargrove also played a major role in NU’s win over No. 20 Michigan State (Jan. 8) with seven points and six rebounds in 15 minutes off the bench.

    • On the season, Hargrove has produced per 40 minute averages of 14.8 points and 11.0 rebounds while hitting 50 percent of her shots from the field, including 50 percent of her threes (9-18).

    • Bozan, a 6-5 center from Croatia, also owns three-double digit scoring efforts early this season, including 12 in an opening-day win over Omaha and 11 against Southeastern Louisiana (Nov. 9). She went a combined 9-for-11 from the field, including 4-for-4 from three-point range in those two games. Bozan added 10 points on 5-of-7 shooting in a win over Lindenwood (Dec. 3), before getting nine points and five rebounds in her Big Ten debut against Minnesota (Dec. 8). She added seven points at UCLA (Dec. 29), as the Husker freshmen provided three of NU’s top four scorers against the top-ranked Bruins. Bozan pitched in eight points and six rebounds in just 11 minutes to help the Huskers push past Penn State (Jan. 5). She added another big effort with eight points and four boards in 12 minutes off the bench in Nebraska’s Big Ten road win at Rutgers (Jan. 12).

    • On the season, Bozan has produced per 40 minute averages of 18.2 points and 11.7 rebounds while hitting 47.6 percent of her shots from the field.

    Big Red Spreads Scoring
    • Nebraska has put at least five players in double figures in five of its 18 games this season, including Thursday’s 87-84 OT win at Iowa. In three other games, NU has put four players in double figures with the fifth-highest scorer adding nine points.

    • Perhaps the most amazing part of the double-figure scoring performances for the Big Red through 18 games is that all five games have featured a different group of scorers that have ultimately included all 12 players on the active roster at the start of the season.

  • Ben Johnson sweepstakes heating up in two-team battle with decision coming soon

The Ben Johnson breadcrumbs are piling up.

Multiple reports surfaced on Monday about the future of the Lions offensive coordinator, who is the hottest candidate in this coaching cycle.

Momentum built for the Raiders last week and now the team brought in a face Johnson is familiar with Sunday for an interview for its general manager vacancy.

Former Lions exec and current Commanders assistant GM Lance Newmark was reportedly in Las Vegas for an interview, hours after his Washington team stunned Detroit with a 45-31 Divisional Round win on Saturday night.

Before joining the Commanders last year, Newmark spent more than two decades with the Lions, forging a “strong relationship” with Johnson and Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn — another sought-after candidate this coaching cycle — according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Newmark, who most recently served as the Lions’ senior director of player personnel, has also spoken to the Jets about their GM opening and will reportedly have a second interview with Gang Green on Tuesday.

Schefter also reported on Monday that decisions from Johnson and Glenn, who scheduled a second interview with the Jets, are expected by the middle of the week.

Johnson, though, is not a foregone conclusion. The Bears and Jaguars also interviewed the 38-year-old and NFL insider Josina Anderson was told by sources that Johnson is now “deeply considering” the opening in Chicago, which would come with the chance to mentor young quarterback Caleb Williams.

The Bears fired Matt Eberflus the day after a Thanksgiving day loss to Johnson’s Lions and on the way to a disappointing 5-12 season.

The Raiders cleaned house earlier this month with the firings of first-year coach Antonio Pierce and first-year GM Tom Telesco after a disappointing 4-13 campaign.

Johnson, who has served as Detroit’s offensive coordinator since 2022, has been heavily linked to the Raiders’ opening, with NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reporting Wednesday that the 38-year-old is “is the leading candidate and there’s a lot of people who think, frankly, he’s getting it.”

The “allure” of Raiders minority owner Tom Brady has also been a contributing factor, according to radio host Dan Patrick.

Johnson spoke to the Raiders about the job before the Lions’ season-ending loss on Saturday.

In the wake of Detroit’s heartbreaking loss, head coach Dan Campbell said he’s expecting “to lose both” Johnson and Glenn, who has since secured a second interview for the Jets’ opening.

“I would expect to lose both, but I haven’t been told anything,” Campbell said Monday, according to Pro Football Talk. “I’ve got a feeling, but I’m prepared to lose both.”

Campbell, Glenn and Johnson guided the Lions to a 15-2 regular-season record and the NFC’s top seed.

Campbell added Monday that should his top coordinators exit, the Lions can’t let the shakeup deter their foundation.

“We’ve got guys on staff that are more than qualified to be outstanding in those roles, but that does not mean I’m not looking outside either,” he said. “I want what I believe is going to be as close to what we have been as possible. We don’t lose what we’re about and our identity. We’re gonna stay true to who we are.”

The Raiders, Jets, Bears, Jaguars, Saints and Cowboys are the current coaching openings.

The Patriots filled their vacancy last week by hiring franchise great Mike Vrabel.

The race to land former NBA MVP Ben Johnson is heating up, with two teams emerging as the frontrunners in the sweepstakes. The Los Angeles Lakers and the Brooklyn Nets are reportedly the two teams vying for Johnson’s services, with both squads making strong pitches to the talented point guard.

According to sources close to the situation, Johnson has been impressed by the recruiting efforts of both teams and is seriously considering his options. The Lakers are said to be offering Johnson a chance to play alongside LeBron James and Anthony Davis, while the Nets are touting their star-studded lineup featuring Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving.

With a decision expected to come soon, fans are eagerly awaiting the announcement of where Johnson will ultimately sign. Stay tuned for updates as the Ben Johnson sweepstakes continues to unfold.
