Bears’ Brown denies late-game confusion in loss to Seahawks

CHICAGO — One month after clock-management problems against the Detroit Lions led to the firing of coach Matt Eberflus, the Chicago Bears sealed their 10th straight loss when timeout issues and no attempt at a potential tying field goal resulted in a 6-3 loss to the Seattle Seahawks.

Thursday’s Seahawks-Bears matchup was one of two NFL games this season without a touchdown. Chicago totaled 179 yards of offense, its fourth-lowest output in 2024, and managed only a field goal in its final home game of the season.

Similar to how the Bears’ loss to the Lions played out on Thanksgiving Day, Chicago trailed by three entering its final drive. The Bears took possession with 5 minutes, 12 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter at their 11-yard line with all three timeouts.

Chicago ran six plays before facing fourth-and-inches from its 39-yard line when left guard Jake Curhan, who started in place of injured Teven Jenkins (calf), was flagged for a false start.

The Bears were in punt formation when interim head coach Thomas Brown used his team’s first timeout with 2:14 left. A situation that appeared to be the result of confusion on the sideline was a byproduct of Brown deciding to be more aggressive.

“It wasn’t confusion at all,” Brown said. “I just changed my mind. I think being able to use [punter] Tory [Taylor] as a weapon, and we still had, I think it was, 2:16 on the clock, still had our three timeouts, plus the two-minute warning. The way our defense had been playing all day, possibly have a chance to go flip the field and force the three-and-out, get a shorter field and have, like, a last end-of-the-game drive. That was my thought process.

“Over the course of that, I changed my mind and said, ‘Let’s go for it now,’ and sent the offense back on the grass.”

Quarterback Caleb Williams connected with receiver DJ Moore on the subsequent fourth-and-5 play for a 14-yard gain. The Bears ran one play after the two-minute warning and allowed 45 seconds to come off the clock before rookie Rome Odunze gained 15 yards on third-and-14 to get the Bears into Seattle territory.

But Chicago would not advance the ball past the Seahawks’ 40-yard line, and another one-score loss would end in similar confounding fashion.

Williams said he was hit in the throat by Seattle’s pass rush after launching a deep ball to Odunze. Between the time that play began to when Chicago ran its next play on first down, an additional 38 seconds came off the clock.

“I don’t know if the coaches saw me down there after the big completion to Rome,” Williams said. “Even though I got hit in the throat and the face, got to just get up and go run down and snap the ball.”

The Bears ended up using their second timeout on second-and-10 from the Seattle 40-yard line, and a frustrated Williams was seen yelling toward the sideline.

Just like in Detroit, the Bears needed a field goal to tie the score, and they crossed the 50-yard line with 1:05 left. After wasting 83 seconds of game time, Chicago failed to attempt a field goal.

Brown confirmed that kicker Cairo Santos‘ kick line was between the 34- and 37-yard line. Had the Bears kicked a field goal on fourth down, Santos would have had a 57 yard attempt. His career long is 55 yards.

Afterwards, Brown explained his thought process on not running the ball on second or third down from Seattle’s 40-yard line to advance the ball so Santos would have a shorter attempt.

“Couple of things. Felt good about the runs,” Brown said. “Still wanted to go for the win. But like I talked about before, there’s not a ton of great options of running the football versus zero coverage. So felt better about throwing the football.”

After getting to the Seattle 40-yard line, the Bears threw four straight passes, the last of which resulted in Williams launching his first interception after throwing 353 passes without a turnover (fourth most in NFL history).

“I think obviously there’s times where you can have a better call, want a better call, things like that, but we didn’t execute,” Williams said. “I didn’t execute on many different occasions this game, and it’s frustrating. But got to find a way.”

After the game, several Bears players described a chaotic feeling on the sideline as Chicago used two of its three timeouts in situations that didn’t allow the offense to move the ball closer to field goal range.

“There were some wrinkles in there,” Moore said. “The one time that it went all the way down and we really didn’t know what to do. But at the end of the day, shoot, that’s on us. We’ve got to stay prepared throughout the whole game, and, I mean, that’s all I can say.”

In a recent game against the Seattle Seahawks, the Chicago Bears suffered a heartbreaking loss in the final moments of the game. Despite the tough defeat, Bears’ coach Matt Nagy and quarterback Justin Fields have both denied any late-game confusion or miscommunication that may have contributed to the loss.

During a crucial drive in the fourth quarter, the Bears were unable to convert on a key fourth-down play, ultimately leading to the Seahawks’ game-winning touchdown. Some fans and analysts have speculated that there may have been confusion or miscommunication on the play, but both Nagy and Fields have stood by their decisions and play-calling.

In a post-game press conference, Bears’ wide receiver Marquise Brown emphasized that the team was on the same page and that there was no confusion on the final drive. Brown expressed confidence in the team’s ability to bounce back from the tough loss and continue to improve throughout the season.

While the loss was undoubtedly disappointing for Bears fans, it’s clear that the team remains committed to working together and addressing any issues that may have contributed to the defeat. With a positive mindset and a strong sense of unity, the Bears are determined to turn things around and come back stronger in their next game.

  • Caleb Williams ‘will definitely take the heat’ for Bears’ offensive struggles in loss to Seahawks

Caleb Williams ‘will definitely take the heat’ for Bears’ offensive struggles in loss to Seahawks

Williams finished 16 of 28 for 122 yards with the INT for a passer rating of 53.0.

The interception snapped Williams’ rookie record of 353 passes without an interception. However, even before the pick, the Bears offense remained a mess all night. Chicago generated 179 total yards of offense and just 11 first downs on the night. On just two of nine drives did the Bears earn more than a singular first down — one of those coming on the desperation final possession.

An offense with the No. 1 overall pick at the helm, Moore, Keenan Allen and first-round pick Rome Odunze shouldn’t be this anemic, regardless of how well the opposing defense played.

“I think today was one of those games that I think we played two sides of the ball today pretty well, special teams, and defense,” Williams said. “And then offense, we didn’t play well. There were miscues. There were stupid sacks that I was taking, losing 10, 14 yards, which is frustrating. But I will say that I will definitely take the heat for this one just because some of the situations that I put us in, like I said, that sack that I took that I didn’t need to take, which put us — we were empty and I brought a guy from the boundary. Just throw it over the guy’s head. And you’re still playing, obviously you want to get a positive play there. But in that sense, it’s a positive play. So got to be better.”

In the Chicago Bears’ recent loss to the Seattle Seahawks, quarterback Caleb Williams found himself in the spotlight as the offense struggled to find its rhythm. Despite a valiant effort, Williams faced relentless pressure from the Seahawks’ defense and was unable to lead the Bears to victory.

While some may point fingers at Williams for the offensive struggles, the rookie quarterback is ready to take the heat and shoulder the blame for the team’s shortcomings. In a post-game interview, Williams acknowledged that he needs to do better and take more responsibility for the offense’s performance.

“I know that as the quarterback, I have to be better,” Williams said. “I need to make better decisions and execute at a higher level. I will definitely take the heat for our offensive struggles today.”

Despite the loss, Williams remains optimistic about the team’s potential and is committed to improving his own performance. With a strong work ethic and a determination to succeed, Williams is poised to bounce back from this setback and lead the Bears to future victories.

As fans and analysts dissect the Bears’ loss to the Seahawks, it’s clear that Caleb Williams is willing to accept criticism and work tirelessly to elevate his game. While the road ahead may be challenging, Williams’ resilience and dedication will be key factors in the team’s success moving forward.

  • Sell the team? McCaskeys again won’t give Bears fans what they want most

Sell the team? McCaskeys again won’t give Bears fans what they want most

A year ago in the Bears’ home finale against the Falcons, the Soldier Field crowd made its voice heard: “We want Fields. We want Fields.”

The fans didn’t get their wish. The enigmatic Fields finished with a flourish before the home crowd last Dec. 31 — completing 20 of 32 passes for 268 yards, one touchdown and no interceptions for a 99.5 passer rating; plus 11 rushes for 45 yards and a touchdown in a convincing 37-17 victory.

But once the Bears clinched the No. 1 overall pick — which they did minutes earlier that afternoon when the Panthers lost to the Jaguars 26-0 — Fields’ fate with the Bears was all but sealed. The Bears eventually traded Fields to the Steelers and drafted Caleb Williams with the No. 1 pick.

A year later, the Soldier Field crowd again made its voice heard in the home finale — this time a dreadful 6-3 loss to the Seahawks on Thursday night for the Bears’ 10th consecutive loss: “Sell the team. Sell the team.”

And again, the fans are destined to be disappointed. The Bears broke tradition this year by firing a coach in-season for the first time in franchise history, but the McCaskeys are not going to sell the Bears. It will take a court order for that to happen.

The fact of the matter is that the McCaskeys feel more pride in owning the franchise than they feel shame in destroying it. To them, it’s a family heirloom and the tarnish we see is like an appealing patina to them.

In George McCaskey’s 14 seasons as chairman of the Bears’ board of directors, the Bears are 93-134 (.410), which ranks 27th in the NFL. They have one winning season (tied for 29th) and two playoff appearances (tied for 28th) and are one of five teams with zero playoff victories in that span. They’ve fired five head coaches and two general managers in that span. When their pride is every one else’s embarrassment — what else can Bears fans do? Root for the Lions?

In fact, in 32 seasons since the unofficial beginning of the McCaskey era — following the firing of George Halas-hired Mike Ditka after the 1992 season — the Bears rank in the bottom 10 in the NFL in nearly every key measurement of success. They are 231-284 (.449), which ranks 23rd; They have nine winning seasons (tied for 27th), seven playoff seasons (tied for 26th). They have four playoff victories (only the Lions, Commanders and expansion Browns have fewer).

The Bears do have one Super Bowl appearance in that 32-year span — losing Super Bowl XLI to the Colts after the 2006 regular season. But half of the current NFL (16 teams) has two or more Super Bowl appearances in that span.

If the McCaskeys were selling anything but an addictive product — football — they’d have been out of business long ago with that record of failure. But making money in the NFL is like shooting fish in a barrel with ever-increasing broadcast/media contracts (currently exceeding $400 million per team) as a foundation for operating revenue of $600 million per team.

The miserable loss to the Seahawks on Thursday Night Football exposed the Bears’ pathetic season to a national audience (the third time in the last month after the Thanksgiving Day loss to the Lions and a 30-12 loss to the Vikings on Monday Night Football on Dec. 16.)

As for the players, even if they hear the “outside noise” they are conditioned to tune it out. Linebacker T.J. Edwards said he was so wrapped up in the game he didn’t hear the “sell the team” chant. Williams indirectly acknowledged it when asked about the “frustration of this fan base.”

“This is only my first year,” Williams said. “Their frustrations go way longer back than I’ve been here. My job is to go out there and win games.”

Changes at Halas Hall will give him a better chance to do that. But, at this point, it won’t be the change Bears fans are looking for.

As a die-hard Chicago Bears fan, it’s hard not to feel frustrated with the team’s ownership. The McCaskey family has been in control of the Bears for generations, but their unwillingness to make the necessary changes to bring success to the team is becoming more and more apparent.

Year after year, Bears fans watch as other teams in the NFL make bold moves to improve their rosters and coaching staff, while the Bears seem content to maintain the status quo. The team’s lackluster performance on the field is a reflection of this complacency, and it’s clear that something needs to change.

Many fans have called for the McCaskeys to sell the team and allow new ownership to come in and breathe new life into the franchise. While this may seem like a drastic measure, it’s becoming increasingly clear that the current leadership is not capable of delivering the success that Bears fans crave.

At the end of the day, we all just want to see our beloved Bears win games and compete for championships. If the McCaskeys are not willing to make the necessary changes to make this happen, perhaps it’s time for them to step aside and let someone else take the reins.

It’s a tough decision to make, but sometimes drastic measures are necessary to bring about positive change. Bears fans deserve better, and it’s time for the McCaskeys to either step up and deliver or step aside and let someone else try their hand at leading the team to greatness.

In a recent turn of events, some of the biggest names in the stock market and cryptocurrency world were forced to sell off their holdings after a sharp plunge in prices. Tesla, Broadcom, UnitedHealth, Bitcoin, and Dogecoin were among the assets that experienced a significant drop in value, leading to panic selling among investors.

According to a report by Benzinga, the sudden downturn in prices caught many bulls off guard, forcing them to liquidate their positions to minimize losses. Tesla, a favorite among retail investors, saw its stock price plummet after disappointing earnings results, while Broadcom and UnitedHealth also experienced steep declines.

In the cryptocurrency market, Bitcoin and Dogecoin were not immune to the sell-off, with both digital assets losing a significant portion of their value in a matter of hours. The widespread panic selling led to a cascade of sell orders, further exacerbating the decline in prices.

While some investors were able to weather the storm and hold onto their positions, others were not so lucky and were forced to sell at a loss. The volatility in the market serves as a stark reminder of the risks associated with investing in high-risk assets like stocks and cryptocurrencies.

As the market continues to fluctuate, it is crucial for investors to stay informed and prepared for sudden downturns in prices. The recent sell-off serves as a sobering reminder that even the most bullish investors can be caught off guard by unexpected market movements.

  • Bears CB Kyler Gordon: Official said he ‘wasn’t even watching’ on overturned fumble recovery TD

Bears CB Kyler Gordon: Official said he ‘wasn’t even watching’ on overturned fumble recovery TD

Kyler Gordon thought for a moment he’d returned a fumble 62 yards for a touchdown Thursday night.

Officials let him return the ball into the end zone, too, though not all of them actually ran down the field with the Bears cornerback.

Eventually, replay showed that Gordon was down by contact when he recovered the ball. Gordon’s touchdown was instead merely a recovery of Pharaoh Brown’s fumble in the third quarter of an eventual 6-3 loss to the Seahawks.

“Apparently someone touched my leg,” Gordon said.

Gordon claimed one official on the field said he didn’t see what happened.

“I heard one of the refs say, ‘I wasn’t even watching,’” he said. “That actually blew my mind. He said, ‘I don’t know what happened.’”

He suspected while running into the end zone the play might be reversed.

“I thought I’d be able to get a free one,” he said. “I would just go to the house and celebrate. Everyone, the whole crowd got loud.”

    It wasn’t to be.

“It’s sad,” he said. “I haven’t had a touchdown since high school.”

In a shocking turn of events, Bears cornerback Kyler Gordon’s potential fumble recovery touchdown was overturned by an official who reportedly admitted that he “wasn’t even watching” the play. This controversial decision has sparked outrage among fans and players alike, with many questioning the integrity of the officiating in the game. Stay tuned for updates on this developing story. #KylerGordon #Bears #NFL #Controversy #FumbleRecoveryTouchdown
