Bears Urged to Bench Tyrique Stevenson for Terell Smith

With three games left in what can only be described as a colossal disappointment of a season, the Chicago Bears have endless questions to answer.

One of them is whether they should continue to give second year cornerback Tyrique Stevenson playing time.

Stevenson’s season has been full of learning experiences, to be sure, but the second-year DB hasn’t seemed to have matured much as the year has progressed. Bleacher Report’s Matt Holder compiled a list of every move each NFC squad should make right now, and for the Bears, he believes they should start Terrell Smith over Stevenson.

“Tyrique Stevenson has had a disappointing season and recently began splitting reps with fellow 2023 draftee Terell Smith, who has taken advantage of the opportunities,” Holder wrote on December 17.

“Heading into this weekend, the fifth-round pick had just a 66.7 passer rating when targeted and earned a 79.8 grade from Pro Football Focus in 2024,” Holder added. “With the Bears playing for the future over the next several weeks, it’s time to see what Smith can do in the CB2 role full-time.”

There’s a Compelling Case to Be Made for Benching Tyrique Stevenson & Starting Terell Smith

Benching Stevenson, a 2023 second-round pick, in favor of Smith, a 2023 fifth-rounder out of the University of Minnesota, might raise a few eyebrows. But Smith has done relatively well in limited opportunities, and could benefit from increased playing time.

Smith has played just 27% of Chicago’s defensive snaps this season after playing 50% of them last year, largely because he missed time earlier in the season with a hip injury.

So far this season, Smith has 16 total tackles and three passes defensed, also snagging the first interception of his career Week 11 against the rival Green Bay Packers. Considering Stevenson’s recent struggles coupled with his issues earlier in the season, it’s fair to wonder what starting Smith would look like.

According to PFF, Stevenson has a coverage grade of 57.4, whereas Smith’s is better at 72.9. Stevenson has also given up for touchdowns in coverage, while Smith has yet to give up a score. Chicago might benefit from seeing more of what Smith can do with increased opportunities.

Tyrique Stevenson Had Lapses vs. 49ers, Vikings

Stevenson’s issues this season — from the Fail Mary to his $19,697 fine for unsportsmanlike conduct after he tripped Detroit Lions wide receiver Jameson Williams — have raised legit concerns about his discipline and decision-making. So has his play art times.

Early in Chicago’s Week 14 loss to the San Francisco 49ers, Stevenson was involved in a critical defensive lapse, losing coverage on wide receiver Jauan Jennings, which resulted in a 7-yard touchdown pass that set the tone for the 49ers’ offense.

This misstep was part of a broader defensive struggle, as the Bears allowed multiple big plays, contributing to a 38-13 defeat.

Bears are giving CB Tyrique Stevenson opportunity to prove he’s worth the trouble next year
The Bears never really benched cornerback Tyrique Stevenson after his ‘‘Fail Mary’’ gaffe against the Commanders, but they turned him into a platoon player.

Stevenson didn’t start the next game against the Cardinals but wound up playing 79% of the Bears’ defensive snaps because fellow cornerback Terell Smith got hurt. He then shared time with Smith in the next five games, playing 58%, 59%, 35%, 60% and 48% of the snaps.

That arrangement appeared to end last week. Stevenson played 77% of the Bears’ defensive snaps against the Vikings. On Sunday against the Lions, he played every down for the first time since Week 5.

The Bears are giving Stevenson every chance to atone for his Week 7 mistake — or are showcasing him to potential trade partners this offseason. If he can’t prove to the Bears he’s worth the trouble, a trade seems likely.

Either way, they need Stevenson to play better. He intercepted a pass against the Vikings but was complicit in the Bears allowing an 82-yard touchdown pass Sunday, the longest they have allowed this season and the longest of Lions quarterback Jared Goff’s career.

On Monday, interim coach Thomas Brown blamed ‘‘poor eyes’’ by Stevenson and safety Jonathan Owens for the coverage error that gave the Lions a 20-0 lead in the second quarter of a game they eventually would win 34-17.

Stevenson ran with speedy wide receiver Jameson Williams but expected help over the top from Owens. But Williams zoomed past Owens — whom Williams and Brown described as being flat-footed because of the play-fake — and already was behind him when he caught the pass.

Stevenson said he needed to communicate with Owens better during the play-action touchdown.

‘‘Gotta realize that he’s pushing down the field,’’ Stevenson told the Sun-Times on Monday. ‘‘Could do a better job at making sure I stay on top of him, looking at him, and give my safety a heads-up call that the post is actually moving toward him. But definitely gotta keep my eyes in the right place and realize that he’s running faster than you expect.’’

Even if Owens was probably more to blame, it was another head-scratching play from Stevenson in a season full of them. He disputed the notion of a rivalry with Williams, who flipped the ball at him on Thanksgiving Day in Detroit after Stevenson tripped him on the sideline. Williams was flagged, and Stevenson was fined almost $20,000.

‘‘They’re all regular receivers, just like I’m a regular CB to them,’’ he said. ‘‘They don’t feel like I’m special, and I don’t feel like I’m special. They line up and run routes just like any other receiver in the league. The name don’t mean nothing. You just have to come out and show who you are.’’

Stevenson famously allowed the man he was supposed to cover to catch a Hail Mary pass as time expired in the Commanders’ victory Oct. 27. The Bears haven’t won since.

‘‘We still want to end the season with a win because we’re not the team that’s pretty much been displayed with some of the incidents and some of the games that we’ve been having,’’ Stevenson said. ‘‘Definitely want to get out with a win before the season ends, just to at least have the guys and everybody feel like our hard work is actually paying off.’’

The precipitating ‘‘incident,’’ of course, was Stevenson’s gaffe, which began with him gesturing toward fans while the Commanders were snapping the ball and ended with him leaping to bat a pass instead of defending wide receiver Noah Brown, who caught the tipped pass for a 52-yard touchdown.

Stevenson said his desire to snap the losing streak isn’t rooted in the fact that his mistake started it.

‘‘I feel like everybody is pushing for the same thing,’’ he said. ‘‘To put a ‘W’ in the win column and move forward.’’

Caleb Williams’ most impressive throw of the game — a would-be 17-yard touchdown pass to Rome Odunze on third down — was negated by a holding penalty.

Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated reported during the Amazon Prime broadcast of Thursday Night Football that the Bears and Carroll have mutual interest and that a conversation between the two could be happening soon.

Bears speechless after ninth straight loss

The Bears locker room cleared out quickly Sunday. The players didn’t have much left to say.

Less than an hour after the Detroit Lions beat the Bears 34-17 at Soldier Field, two players in the Bears locker room — who shall remain nameless — finished up interviews at nearly the same moment.

As a gaggle of media members dispersed in search of other voices, one player leaned in toward the other and said, “What do they expect us to say?”

The Bears are out of answers. They lost their ninth consecutive game. They were blown out for the third straight game since firing former head coach Matt Eberflus.

Nobody lingered in the locker room on Sunday. The players showed up, went to work, punched the timecard and got out of there. Some fans probably don’t blame them. This team was eliminated from playoff contention a week ago. There were roughly 6,000 empty seats at Soldier Field on Sunday.

The last two games, at this point, are a formality.

Asked after the game if he’s still trying to prove himself to the Bears front office, receiver Keenan Allen — whose contract expires after the season — said this: “Everybody. Yeah, you just got to prove it to all 32 teams. At the end of the day, that’s what it’s about and the last name on your back is really what matters. I ain’t never going to quit. Just keep going.”

The Bears traded a fourth-round draft pick to the Chargers in exchange for Allen in March. They did so knowing he was on the final year of his contract. Allen spent the first 11 years of his career in Southern California. The hope for the Bears was he would help elevate the offense for rookie quarterback Caleb Williams.

Allen played well on Sunday, racking up 141 yards and a touchdown on nine catches. But he sure sounded like a player who is ready to get back to California for the winter, and maybe permanently.

“Just trying to do my job,” Allen said. “Keep fighting. Just keep putting good stuff on tape.”

That tape would be for his impending free agency.

Unfortunately, his recent offensive outburst has been too little too late for the 2024 Bears.

But other players, like Williams, aren’t going anywhere. General manager Ryan Poles will need to figure out how to piece together a competitive team from the ashes of this season. It starts with finding a head coach.

Not everyone shares Allen’s outlook, of course. Rookie receiver Rome Odunze, who is under contract for at least three more seasons, views it differently.

“Different mixed emotions,” Odunze said when asked about the season. “We all carry that burden and carry that weight. It’s tough. I think there are good character men in this locker room that can continue to uplift and continue to keep going. I follow that inspiration and try to be a light as well.”

Williams has been a bright spot. Statistically, he’s having one of the best seasons of any Bears quarterback ever. He threw for another 334 yards and two touchdowns on Sunday. His 2024 season is currently sixth on the Bears’ single-season passing record books with 3,271 passing yards.

“Every snap is valuable,” Williams said. “There are so many different situations that happen throughout games that you can learn from and that I’ve learned from this year.”

When it comes to the stats, it’s a little bit hard to know what’s real and what’s not when Williams can put up numbers in blowout losses. Defenses undoubtedly play different when they have a two-score lead.

Detroit led by two possessions halfway through the first quarter on Sunday.

“We can evaluate everything,” Brown said when asked about it. “I think the way guys respond, how they handle adversity. Also kind of being in the moment, not having penalties. Obviously, sustaining some drives and putting those things together. Everything’s always under evaluation.”

That’s been the case for this Bears coaching staff since well before Brown took the reins. Eberflus loved to say he would evaluate everything.

But for the 2024 Bears, there’s not much left to evaluate.

Bears’ new wrinkle features DJ Moore as ballcarrier

Interim head coach Thomas Brown explained that the Bears are “trying to find multiple ways to get [Moore] the ball in space” while also “trying to find different wrinkles to be creative, give the defense different looks and also find different ways to use him in motion.”

Moore has rushed for 60 yards on 10 carries this season, his highest output on the ground since his rookie season with the Panthers in 2018 when he ran for 172 yards on 13 attempts.

Asked about the challenge of lining up in the backfield, Moore said: “Don’t get smacked in the hole. That’s the challenge. Don’t have a negative play, take care of the ball, be a playmaker.”

Over the final three weeks of the season, Brown wants rookie quarterback Caleb Williams to keep focusing on his communication and preparation.

“Continuing to do a really good job of just the communication in and out of the huddle so we have as much time as possible on the play clock to make adjustments and get the play call in fast,” Brown said.

“It’s also understanding how to go through every single call the days before, the nights before the game, leading up to a game, so we have some answers if the defense gives you different wrinkles when it comes to playing man coverage, when it comes to different pressures, when it comes to empty stuff and overloading us.

“I think he’s continuing to progress every week. He’s a super confident dude, which I love about him. Just continue to keep battling.”

One of Williams’ highlights Monday night came when he recognized he had a free play due to a Vikings offside penalty and completed a 29-yard pass to fellow rookie Rome Odunze.

Brown credited the young quarterback with “understanding how to use cadence as a weapon, to mix and match between downs and when it’s most appropriate.”

Bears receiver Keenan Allen posting big numbers
Veteran linebacker T.J. Edwards is in the midst of another productive season. The sixth-year pro leads the Bears with 119 tackles and 10 tackles-for-loss and has also registered 3.0 sacks, one interception, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery.

“Just an intense guy, highly intelligent, accountable, leader through his actions,” said defensive coordinator Eric Washington. “You can really depend on him. Really good communicator. Bound and determined to get you information in terms of what they’re seeing and how that can affect our plan going forward and the adjustments we need to make.”

Special teams coordinator Richard Hightower was impressed with how second-year pro Tyler Scott performed Sunday against the Lions.

After being inactive in five of the previous eight games, Scott averaged 24.0 yards on three kickoff returns with a long of 29 yards. It was the first time that the 2023 fourth-round pick has returned kickoffs this season.

“I thought Tyler made some strides,” Hightower said. “He did a nice job as a gunner. Tory [Taylor] hit two of those punts and Tyler forced fair catches on both of them down there—one at the 7 and one at the 12-yard line. I thought he did a really nice job with his release at the line of scrimmage as a gunner, and I thought he did a really nice job as a returner making really good decisions.

“What he will tell you is that he probably should get more [yards] on a couple of those returns, which is what we want him in that state. We always want him to get more. He’s eager. He’s hungry. But I thought he had a good first outing.”

Bears $80 million star predicted to dump Chicago to join NFC contender
The Chicago Bears have had a disappointing season, to say the least. They are once again in search of a new head coach, but that’s not the only significant change that could hit their team next season.

While analyzing needs and potential moves for every team, Bleacher Report’s Matt Holder predicted that the Eagles would sign Bears wide receiver Keenan Allen. Allen has not lived up to the expectations the Bears probably had for him. He is aging and could be in search of a team that gives him a chance to win a Super Bowl. The Eagles could be searching for a third receiver to join A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith.

“Allen could fit that description, having only made the playoffs three times and never winning a playoff game during his 12 seasons,” wrote Holder. “While the 32-year-old is having a down year in a bad Bears offense, he still has (seven) touchdowns on the campaign and is a year removed from a 1,200-yard performance.”

Allen signed a four-year, $80 million extension with the Los Angeles Chargers in 2020. The Bears traded a fourth-round pick for him this offseason. He has 694 yards on the season in 13 games. He is still a serviceable player and could be a great compliment to the duo the Eagles currently have. Meanwhile, the Bears would not be too upset watching him leave as they could land a cheaper, younger replacement in the NFL Draft.

It has been rumored that the Chicago Bears’ $80 million star player is considering leaving the team to join an NFC contender. The player, whose identity has not been revealed, has reportedly grown frustrated with the lack of success in Chicago and is seeking a fresh start with a team that has a better chance of winning a championship.

Bears WR Rome Odunze eyes Davante Adams-Aaron Rodgers pairing as goal for him and QB Caleb Williams
There wasn’t a moment this season when Bears wide receiver Rome Odunze thought he had built enough chemistry with his quarterback, fellow rookie Caleb Williams.

That might not happen at any point in their careers.

‘‘You’ve gotta go out there and prove it on the field,’’ Odunze said this week. ‘‘We have to continue to do that. . . . Kind of like Davante Adams and Aaron Rodgers, they have to go out and prove that every single Sunday, too. And they continue to do so.

‘‘Even though we’re at the inception of our duo, you still have to prove it.’’

The Bears envisioned Williams and Odunze becoming one of the best young quarterback/receiver pairings in the NFL when they drafted the former No. 1 overall and the latter No. 9 in April.

The two have shown flashes of that this season — Odunze caught a 50-50 ball for 30 yards on fourth-and-one Sunday against the Lions — but not often enough for the Bears to avoid a nine-game losing streak.

Odunze also fumbled twice in the first quarter of the 34-17 loss to the Lions, first on a fly-sweep handoff from Williams, then after a 19-yard catch. Perhaps that’s why he gave a stilted answer when he was asked how he evaluated his rookie season.

‘‘I couldn’t tell you,’’ he said. ‘‘We’ve still got games to go. I can’t really encapsulate it yet.’’

Odunze’s performance has fallen just shy of that of Marvin Harrison Jr., who was picked No. 4 overall by the Cardinals. After 15 games, Harrison has 51 catches on 100 targets for 726 yards; Odunze has 51 catches on 95 targets for 701 yards. Harrison has seven touchdown receptions to Odunze’s three, though. Harrison is fourth in receiving yards among rookies, Odunze fifth. The Jaguars’ Brian Thomas leads all rookies with 1,088 receiving yards.

But neither Harrison nor Thomas has had to help break in a rookie quarterback the way Odunze has. The good news is that he and Williams can grow together. The bad news has been self-evident this season, as the Bears’ offense has struggled to find consistency on and off the field. Williams is on his third offensive coordinator and second play-caller.

‘‘I think Rome has been consistent from day one,’’ interim head coach Thomas Brown said. ‘‘The ball hasn’t always found him throughout the year, as far as his role in kind of how it plays out from a progression standpoint. But when he’s had an opportunity to make plays, the guy constantly shows up.’’

Williams has seen that, too. Odunze ranks third on the Bears in catches and targets and second in receiving yards.

‘‘Being able to have him here and grow with him and our relationship over the years is going to be vital, I think, for the team,’’ Williams said. ‘‘So I’ve been able to continue that and continue to grow that. [It] is going to be really fun and really vital.’’

NOTE: The Bears held a walkthrough Tuesday and estimated their players’ participation for a full practice. Guard Teven Jenkins (calf), safety Elijah Hicks (ankle/foot), running back Travis Homer (hamstring) and tight end Marcedes Lewis (rest) were among the players who would have sat out.

The Bears play the Seahawks at 7:15 p.m. at Soldier Field.
