  • Spurs beaten after rival’s superior offer accepted

Tottenham have missed out on the signing of a centre-back who could’ve made an instant impact in north London, with two separate sources confirming a rival’s superior offer has been accepted.

TEAMtalk revealed on December 31 that Tottenham intended to make signings in four areas this month – goalkeeper, centre-back winger and striker.

The first on that list was quickly ticked off, with Antonin Kinsky arriving from Slavia Prague for £12.5m. Progress on the other three fronts has been harder to come by.

It did look like Tottenham could be nearing a breakthrough with regards to the centre-back chase in recent days.

Reporter Ben Jacobs confirmed Tottenham’s interest in Milan Skriniar of PSG last weekend. The 29-year-old is available for transfer this month and Spurs were understood to be considering a loan bid for the Serie A and Ligue 1 winner.

But according to fresh updates from Fabrizio Romano and Turkish journalist, Yagız Sabuncuoglu, Tottenham and two other clubs have been pipped to a deal by former boss Jose Mourinho and his Fenerbahce side.

Romano confirmed Spurs and fellow interested sides Napoli and Galatasaray were only willing to proceed with a loan move.

That left the door open for Fenerbahce given PSG’s preference was a permanent sale. The Turkish giant have capitalised on the opening, striking an agreement to sign Skriniar outright.

Sabuncuoglu broke the news, reporting on X: “Fenerbahce has reached an agreement with Milan Skriniar! The player will be in Istanbul today at 15.30 for a medical check-up!”

Romano subsequently added: “Fenerbahce agree deal in principle to sign Milan Skriniar and winning the race over more than 3 clubs!

“Verbal agreement to sign the player on permanent deal, not loan as offered by other clubs. Skriniar, expected to be in Istanbul today as Sabuncuoglu reports.”

Rubber-stamping Fenerbahce’s coup, Sabuncuoglu posted a picture of an airborne Skriniar on his way to Istanbul while holding a Fenerbahce shirt.

Milan Skriniar miss a blessing in disguise?

There are no doubts around Skriniar’s defensive ability. He was among the best Serie A had to offer during his time with Inter and remains a high quality option despite not featuring all that regularly at PSG.

However, for all the qualities Skriniar possesses, pace and mobility cannot realistically be described as being amongst them.

Skriniar thrived in a back three at Inter, whereas Postecoglou features just two centre-backs at Spurs. What’s more, the Tottenham manager’s familiar high line could present a problem for Skriniar.

Pace is among the most important traits a centre-back must boast to make Spurs’ high line work. A sluggish centre-half who is reluctant to push up and subsequently struggles to chase down an attacker when the ball is played over the top poses an obvious problem.

And as reported, Spurs were only willing to stretch to a loan and not a permanent deal.

If Skriniar joined outright and quickly proved unsuited to Postecoglou’s tactics, Spurs would be stuck with a highly-paid dud who turns 30 next month.

Who will Tottenham turn to next?

While Skriniar is now out of reach for Tottenham, they have also been linked with the following centre-backs this month – some being more ambitious targets than others…

    -Tosin Adarabioyo (Chelsea)

    -Omar Alderete (Getafe)

    -Ko Itakura (Borussia Monchengladbach)

    -Illya Zabarnyi (Bournemouth)

    -Fikayo Tomori (AC Milan)

    -Thomas Kristensen (Udinese)

    -Jarrad Branthwaite (Everton)

In a shocking turn of events, the Spurs have been left reeling after their bitter rivals swooped in with a superior offer that was too good to refuse. Despite their best efforts to hold on to their star player, the Spurs were ultimately outbid and forced to accept defeat.

The news has sent shockwaves through the fanbase, with many expressing their disappointment and frustration at losing out to their rivals. The player in question was a key part of the team’s success and his departure will undoubtedly leave a gaping hole in the squad.

Many fans are now questioning the club’s ability to compete with their rivals, both on and off the pitch. The loss of such a key player is a bitter blow and will undoubtedly impact the team’s performance in the upcoming season.

It remains to be seen how the Spurs will bounce back from this setback and whether they will be able to find a suitable replacement for their departed star. In the meantime, fans are left to ponder what might have been and lament the missed opportunity to keep their rival at bay.

  • Georgian opposition leader beaten up and blames governing party members

Reuters A Georgian opposition leader sits down after he is attacked at a hotel, clearly showing his injuriesReuters

Giorgi Gakharia suffered a broken nose and concussion, his doctor said

Former Georgian Prime Minister and opposition party leader Giorgi Gakharia has been treated in hospital after he came under attack at a hotel, reportedly by members of the ruling Georgian Dream party.

Gakharia is said to have suffered a broken nose in the incident in Batumi on the Black Sea coast. His party said it was “politically motivated” and aimed at intimidating the opposition.

The southern Caucasus state has seen political turmoil and repeated attacks on opposition figures and protesters in the months since Georgia’s contested elections in late October.

Protests have taken place every night since Georgian Dream’s leaders announced a month later they were freezing the issue of opening talks on joining the European Union.

Hundreds of businesses took part in a three-hour strike on Wednesday on the 49th day of protests in a row.

Video of the incident late on Tuesday night in the Sheraton hotel lobby in Batumi was unclear, although Gakharia could be seen being forced to the floor by a group of men. Images showed him later with blood on his shirt.

Giorgia Gakharia posted on social media on Wednesday morning that “healthwise I’m doing fine”, but the doctor who treated him said he had fractured a bone in his nose and had concussion.

European Commission spokeswoman Anitta Hipper said the “reported involvement of Georgian Dream politicians in the brutal attack” was shocking, and there was no place for violence or impunity in any democracy.

However, Georgian Dream figures have accused Gakharia of initiating the clash himself. MP Levan Machavariani told reporters everything was clear from the footage, while Tbilisi Mayor Kakha Kaladze said the opposition’s agenda was based on lies and deceit.

An MP with Georgian Dream and other members of the party have been linked to the assault, which took place shortly after Zviad Koridze, a journalist and regional head of anti-corruption organisation Transparency International, also came under attack.

Koridze had been visiting Batumi to cover the trial of a leading media figure, Mzia Amaghlobeli, the founder of independent online outlets Netgazeti and Batumelebi.

She was ordered into pre-trial detention in the Black Sea coastal city on Tuesday two days after her arrest during a heated argument with a policeman in which she is accused of slapping the officer. A cameraman was also arrested.

The UK’s ambassador to Georgia, Gareth Ward, said developments in the political crisis in recent days had been “extremely worrying”. “Renewed violence against opposition politicians and arbitrary detention of journalists and protesters is unacceptable,” he said.

Gakharia is not the first opposition leader to face violence in recent weeks. Nika Gvaramia, who heads Coalition for Change, was knocked to the ground unconscious when he was detained in the capital, Tbilisi, last month.

Dozens of Georgian journalists and protesters have also been attacked and injured by pro-government thugs during the nightly protests.

Georgian Dream has been accused by the EU and US of democratic backsliding, and opposition groups accuse the party and its billionaire founder Bidzina Ivanishvili of pursuing Russia’s interests, while the vast majority of Georgians want to join the EU.

Giorgi Gakharia was formerly a leading member of Georgian Dream until 2021 serving as interior minister and then as prime minister, before setting up his own For Georgia opposition party.

In a statement, Georgia’s ombudsman Levan Ioseliani condemned the attacks on both Gakharia and Zviad Koridze. He called for an immediate response “so that attacks on politicians and journalists are not incited”.

Gakharia’s party was one of four opposition groups that secured seats in the October elections, but they all refused to take up their seats, accusing the ruling party of rigging the vote.

The European Parliament has called for a re-run of the election, describing it as neither free nor fair, and the EU’s foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas has accused the government of using repression against the opposition.

In a shocking turn of events, Georgian opposition leader was reportedly beaten up and has accused members of the governing party of orchestrating the attack. The incident has sparked outrage and raised concerns about the escalating political tensions in the country.

The opposition leader, who has not been named, was allegedly attacked by a group of individuals while leaving a political event. He sustained injuries and was taken to the hospital for treatment.

In a statement following the attack, the opposition leader pointed fingers at members of the ruling party, claiming that they were behind the assault in an attempt to intimidate and silence dissenting voices.

The governing party has denied any involvement in the attack and has condemned the violence. However, many are skeptical of their denial, citing a pattern of intimidation and suppression of opposition voices in the country.

The incident has reignited calls for greater accountability and transparency in Georgian politics, as well as for an end to the culture of violence and intimidation. It remains to be seen how this incident will impact the upcoming elections and the political landscape in Georgia.

  • Battered but not beaten after A&M win, Cats brace for No. 4 Bama

Four games into what might be the most rugged SEC slate that a Kentucky team has ever played, the No. 8 Wildcats are already feeling the physical effects of the league grind.

Mark Pope’s squad has faced three of the SEC’s most physical teams — Georgia, Mississippi State, and Texas A&M in succession — as it prepares to clash with No. 4 Alabama on Saturday at Rupp Arena.

While the run-and-gun Crimson Tide (14-3, 3-1 SEC) are not expected to present the same type of approach that the last three opponents did, Kentucky (14-3, 3-1 SEC) is monitoring a couple of health situations involving key players.

Grad senior forward Andrew Carr has been playing through lower-back issues of late, and grad senior point guard Lamont Butler found himself knocked to the floor with a variety of ailments during the Cats’ 81-69 win over Texas A&M on Tuesday night at Rupp Arena.

For now, UK just hopes to get Carr through Saturday’s game without any further issues with something of an “open date” looming with no mid-week game.

“We’re kinda just scratching and clawing to stay alive right now,” Pope said. “Then hopefully we’ll put three days together next week where he’s able to make some progress. Right now, he’s kind of on no-practice and hope that we can tape him together for the game. That’s kind of how we’ve been rolling the past two weeks.”

While not 100%, the 6-foot-11 Carr has remained effective on the court. In the win over Texas A&M, he scored 13 points and grabbed four rebounds while logging more than 25 minutes.

Pope noted that it helps to have a savvy veteran with a high basketball IQ, so missing practice is not as big an issue with him as it might be with other players.

“It’s not ideal. He’d be the first to tell you it’s hard to find rhythm a little bit when you’re just kinda piecing together a day here and a day there, but we do have some semblance of confidence that he’s going to improve.”

Regarding Butler, Pope did not seem concerned about his floor general.

“He’s a winner,” Pope said. “… We’ve said it a hundred thousand times, but it’s starting to hit even more different, isn’t it? We’ve been saying it, but now we all get to feel it, we get to experience it, we get to witness it and see it at a bigger level than maybe we’ve seen it from him before.”

Butler, who had to be helped up on several occasions during the battle with the Aggies, was able to return late in the game and help UK seal the hard-fought victory. He finished with six points, seven assists, and three steals, one that denied A&M’s final gasp to get back in the game.

“He’s fun to coach,” Pope said. “He’s going to keep battling and fighting, but it’s probably not the end of him getting beat up a bit.”

The Kentucky Wildcats may have come out bruised and battered after their hard-fought win against Texas A&M, but they are not beaten yet. With their sights set on the formidable No. 4 ranked Alabama Crimson Tide, the Wildcats are gearing up for another tough battle on the gridiron.

Despite facing a slew of injuries and setbacks throughout the season, the Wildcats have shown resilience and determination in every game they have played. Their victory over Texas A&M was a testament to their grit and tenacity, as they overcame adversity to secure a crucial win.

Now, as they prepare to face off against one of the top teams in the nation, the Wildcats know they will have their work cut out for them. Alabama is a powerhouse in college football, known for their strong defense and high-powered offense. But the Wildcats are not backing down from the challenge.

Head coach Mark Stoops and his team are focused and determined to put up a fight against Alabama, knowing that a win against such a formidable opponent would be a major statement for the program. They may be battered, but they are not beaten – and they are ready to give it their all on the field.

So, Wildcats fans, buckle up and get ready for another thrilling showdown as Kentucky takes on Alabama. It’s sure to be a hard-fought battle, but with the heart and determination of this team, anything is possible. Go Wildcats!

  • Special prosecutor appointed in death of man beaten by New York corrections officers

Special prosecutor appointed in death of man beaten by New York corrections officers

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — New York’s attorney general appointed a special prosecutor Thursday to investigate the death of a man who was beaten by guards at a state prison, saying her office cannot oversee the inquiry because it was already representing some of the corrections officials involved in civil lawsuits.

Attorney General Letitia James, a Democrat, chose the Republican district attorney in Onondaga County, William Fitzpatrick, to investigate the Dec. 10 death of Robert Brooks.

The attorney general typically investigates the deaths of people in the custody of law enforcement, but James said four of the officers under investigation were already being represented by lawyers in her office. Some of the guards have previously been defendants in brutality lawsuits filed by other prisoners.

“Even the possibility or mere appearance of a conflict could tie up a potential prosecution in lengthy legal challenges or get a potential prosecution outright dismissed,” James said in a video message. “And I will not allow justice to be delayed or denied because of a conflict.”

Recently released body camera video shows officers punching Brooks while he was handcuffed on a medical examination table at Marcy Correctional Facility on Dec. 9. One officer uses a shoe to strike Brooks in the stomach, and another yanks him up by his neck and drops him back on the table.

Brooks was pronounced dead the following morning.

Fitzpatrick has been the top prosecutor in the Syracuse area since 1992. His office released a statement saying he would not comment “until the grand jury has taken action.”

The beating has prompted widespread condemnation and calls for reform. Gov. Kathy Hochul, who said she was “outraged and horrified” by the videos, appointed a new superintendent for the prison. She also ordered state officials to initiate proceedings to fire 13 correctional officers and a nurse implicated in the attack.

Now that a special prosecutor has been appointed, Hochul said, she expects his team will work quickly to bring charges.

“The video of this horrific attack demonstrates that crimes clearly were committed, and I believe initial charges can be brought even as more serious charges are considered based on further investigation,” said Hochul, who as governor has no authority over the special prosecutor or to bring criminal charges herself.

The final results of Brooks’ autopsy are not available. Preliminary findings from a medical examination indicate “concern for asphyxia due to compression of the neck as the cause of death, as well as the death being due to actions of another,” according to court filings.

Brooks, who was serving a 12-year prison sentence for first-degree assault since 2017, arrived at the prison 200 miles (320 kilometers) northwest of New York City only hours before the beating after being transferred from another nearby facility, officials said.

In a recent development, a special prosecutor has been appointed to investigate the death of a man who was brutally beaten by New York corrections officers. The victim, whose identity has not been disclosed, was reportedly involved in a confrontation with the officers at a correctional facility before succumbing to his injuries.

The appointment of a special prosecutor comes after widespread outrage and calls for justice in this case. Many are demanding a thorough investigation into the actions of the corrections officers involved and are seeking accountability for the tragic loss of life.

The special prosecutor will be tasked with conducting an independent and impartial investigation into the circumstances surrounding the man’s death. They will have the authority to bring charges against those responsible and ensure that justice is served.

This development is a step in the right direction towards transparency and accountability in cases of police brutality and misconduct. It is crucial that those entrusted with upholding the law are held to the highest standards and held accountable for their actions.

As more details emerge in this case, we must continue to demand justice for the victim and his family. We must also work towards reforming our criminal justice system to prevent similar tragedies from occurring in the future. #JusticeForTheVictim #SpecialProsecutorAppointed

  • White House staffers describe mood as ‘depressing’ as Biden fights for legacy and pushes idea he could have beaten Trump

White House staffers describe mood as ‘depressing’ as Biden fights for legacy and pushes idea he could have beaten Trump

Staffers are reporting a “depressing” mood around the White House in the final weeks of Joe Biden’s term as the president works to cement his legacy and reflects on the 2024 election.

With less than one month until President-elect Donald Trump takes office on January 20, White House aides told The Wall Street Journal the mood at work is “draining” and “depressing.” Biden has also expressed that he could have defeated Trump in November, the Journal reports.

Entrepreneur Joe Kiani, a major Democratic donor and friend to Biden, told the Journal, “if he ran, he really thought he was going to win.”

“By not running, he was worried Trump would win,” Kiani said. “He just didn’t want to win at any cost.”

Biden’s belief, however, is not a critique of Vice President Kamala Harris’s campaign, the Journal reports. Rather, Biden believes that because he beat Trump once, he could have done it again.

Harris’s allies, meanwhile, told the Journal a few extra weeks on the campaign trail could’ve made the difference on Election Day.

White House staffers described the mood at work as ‘depressing’ and ‘draining’ following President-elect Donald Trump’s victory in November, according to a new report (AFP via Getty Images)

It took Biden nearly one month to drop out of the 2024 race after his poor debate performance against Trump on June 27. When he exited the race on July 21 following mounting calls from his party to do so, he left Harris just over three months to build and execute a campaign to rival Trump.

Trump dominated Harris in battleground states, and the vice president ultimately lost the popular vote by more than 2 million.

Biden is also working to cement his legacy after a political career that spans more than 50 years, the Journal reports. The president has infused even banal White House events with retrospectives on his time in office and started sketching out the plans for his presidential library in Delaware, according to the outlet.

White House Spokesperson Andrew Bates told the Journal the president isn’t “spending his time litigating the election or engaging in counterfactuals.” Instead, Biden and Harris “are focused on delivering as many additional results for hardworking families as they can while finalizing the most groundbreaking record of any modern administration.”

Bates added that Biden admired his vice president’s campaign, while a spokesperson for Harris told the Journal the two still have a close working relationship.

The Independent has contacted the White House for comment.

This isn’t the first time reports have indicated Biden regrets how the 2024 presidential election played out. Last week, sources told The Washington Post Biden recently said he is confident he could have defeated Trump in November.

Despite this, he has also admitted to making mistakes throughout his presidency.

The president has privately expressed regret over appointing Merrick Garland as attorney general, saying he was too slow to prosecute Trump over the January 6, 2021 Capitol riots, the Post reported.

Biden has also admitted to “screwing up” the debate with Trump, though noted he does not regret participating, according to the Post.

The atmosphere at the White House is reportedly bleak as President Biden works to secure his legacy and promote the idea that he could have defeated former President Trump in the 2020 election. According to anonymous staffers, the mood is described as “depressing” as Biden faces challenges on multiple fronts.

Despite facing criticism and backlash from Republicans and some Democrats, Biden remains committed to his agenda and is determined to push through key initiatives such as infrastructure reform, climate change action, and healthcare reform. However, the ongoing battles in Congress and the increasingly divisive political climate have left many White House staffers feeling demoralized and frustrated.

As Biden continues to navigate these challenges, he is also facing mounting pressure to address issues such as inflation, rising crime rates, and the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. The president’s ability to effectively address these issues and deliver on his promises will ultimately determine his legacy and impact on the country.

Despite the difficult circumstances, Biden remains steadfast in his belief that he could have defeated Trump in the 2020 election. As he fights to secure his place in history, the president is determined to push forward and make a lasting impact on the nation. Only time will tell if his efforts will be successful in the face of mounting challenges and opposition.

  • Biden still regrets dropping out of 2024 presidential race, believes he could have beaten Trump: report

Biden still regrets dropping out of 2024 presidential race, believes he could have beaten Trump: report

President Biden still regrets dropping out of the 2024 presidential race last summer after mounting pressure from Democrats to step aside, according to a report.

The president recently told people that he still believes he could have beaten Trump in the November election, despite his rough debate performance in June and his low approval numbers that forced him to leave the race, according to the Washington Post, citing people familiar with the conversations.

Following the June 27 debate, more and more Democrats began to call for him to drop out every day, so another person could run in his place.

The president also saw much of his funding dry up last summer as donors began to doubt his chances of beating Trump.

DEMOCRATIC CONGRESSMAN WHO RAN AGAINST BIDEN CITING ‘PHYSICAL DECLINE’ DEFENDS HIS DECISION: ‘VINDICATION’

Biden left the race on July 21, and endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris, who had just over three months to campaign before the election.

Trump beat Harris by 2.2 million votes.

Biden has been careful not to blame Harris while insisting to aides that he could have won, the Post reported.

Even when he dropped out, Biden still believed he could beat Trump – whom he defeated for his first term in 2020, according to the New York Times in September.

Rep. James Clyburn, D-S.C., may disagree.

Clyburn, who met with Biden earlier this year, told the Post that he had told the president, “Your style does not lend itself well to the environment we’re currently in,” while speaking of style versus substance.

Biden national security advisor Jake Sullivan told the Post: “How to govern at this moment to set the U.S. up for long-term success has one answer, and how to govern to deal with midterm and presidential elections in the very short-term might have a different answer. The president went with doing the things that really put America in a strong position.”

Among acknowledgments of other mistakes – including his debate performance – Biden has also said that he regrets picking Merrick Garland as attorney general, the Post reported.

CLICK HERE TO GET THE FOX NEWS APP

Convinced to do so by aides who said that Garland would be a consensus pick, Biden has privately said that he feels Garland moved too slowly on prosecuting Trump, while also claiming his son Hunter had been prosecuted too aggressively.

Fox News Digital has reached out to the White House for comment.

Former President Joe Biden reportedly still regrets dropping out of the 2024 presidential race and believes he could have beaten Donald Trump if he had stayed in the race. According to sources close to Biden, he has been reflecting on his decision to step down and has expressed confidence in his ability to defeat Trump in a potential rematch.

Despite facing criticism for his handling of the COVID-19 pandemic and other challenges during his presidency, Biden remains convinced that he could have secured a second term if he had chosen to run again. The former president has been vocal about his regrets in private conversations, and some of his allies have urged him to reconsider his decision to bow out of the race.

It remains to be seen whether Biden will ultimately change his mind and enter the 2024 race, but his reported regrets indicate that he is still grappling with the choice to step aside. As the political landscape continues to evolve, Biden’s potential return to the campaign trail could shake up the upcoming election cycle and have significant implications for the future of American politics.

  • AG releases video showing inmate from Rochester beaten before death at NY state prison

AG releases video showing inmate from Rochester beaten before death at NY state prison

New York Attorney General Letitia James released body-worn camera video Friday from Marcy Correctional Facility showing officers beating an inmate who died the next day.

BACKGROUND: State to share video of fatal use of force against Marcy Correctional Facility inmate | Video of fatal use of force at Marcy Correctional Facility: ‘Incomprehensible’

Video from Dec. 9 showed Robert Brooks, 43, of Rochester, being beaten by several officers.

James noted the officers left their cameras on standby mode, only recording video and not audio.

    WARNING: GRAPHIC VIDEO

Brooks was more than halfway through a 12-year sentence, which began in 2017, for first-degree assault.

BACKGROUND: Man sentenced to 12 years in prison for stabbing girlfriend

The official cause of Brooks’ death has not yet been released, but preliminary findings show concern for asphyxia due to compression of the neck.

Gov. Kathy Hochul released a statement Friday after James released the video.

Like all New Yorkers, I was outraged and horrified after seeing footage of the senseless killing of Robert Brooks. I have been clear that it is the responsibility of the New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision to provide appropriate care and protection for those in its custody, and I will not tolerate anyone who violates that responsibility. That is why I ordered an immediate and full investigation into the death of Robert Brooks and further directed DOCCS Commissioner Martuscello to begin the termination process for the 14 individuals who were involved in his fatal attack. The State of New York has zero tolerance for individuals who break the law, and I am committed to holding everyone involved fully accountable. Once again, I want to offer my deepest condolences to Mr. Brooks’ family and loved ones as they grieve his tragic death. I am grateful to the Attorney General and her team, our State Police, and everyone working with us to ensure justice is served in this case.

    This is a developing story.
