  • Tax season has begun. Here’s when you’ll get your refund

NEW YORK (AP) — Tax season is underway, and the IRS expects 140 million people will file returns by April 15. The agency has also debuted a new online tool to help taxpayers check the status of any refund they may be entitled to.

President Donald Trump this week offered all federal employees a buyout package in an effort to reduce the size of the government workforce, which could impact IRS staffing at an important period for the agency, though it’s not yet clear how. The IRS did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

    Here’s what to know:

When will I receive my refund?

If you file your tax return electronically, the IRS says it should take 21 days or less to receive your refund. If you choose to receive your refund with direct deposit, it should take even less time. If you file a paper return, the refund could take four weeks or more, and if your return requires amendments or corrections, it could take longer.

The IRS cautions taxpayers not to rely on receiving a refund by a certain date, especially when making major purchases or paying bills.

How can I check the status of my refund?

Taxpayers can use the online tool Where’s My Refund? to check the status of their income tax refund within 24 hours of e-filing and generally within four weeks of filing a paper return.

Information related to this tool is updated once daily, overnight. To access the status of your refund, you’ll need:

    — Your Social Security or individual taxpayer ID number (ITIN)

    — Your filing status

    — The refund amount calculated on your return

    How do refunds work?

If you paid more through the year than you owe in tax, due to withholding or other reasons, you should get money back. Even if you didn’t pay excess tax, you may still get a refund if you qualify for a refundable credit, like the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) or Child Tax Credit. To get your refund, you must file a return, and you have three years to claim a tax refund.

Do I qualify for the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC)?

To qualify for the EITC, you must have under $11,600 in investment income and earn less than a specific income level from working. If you’re single with no children, your income level must be $18,591 or below. And if you’re married filing jointly with three or more children, you must make $66,819 or below. To determine if your household qualifies based on your marital status and your number of dependents you can use the online EITC Assistant tool.

What about the Child Tax Credit?

If you have a child, you are most likely eligible for the Child Tax Credit. The credit is up to $2,000 per qualifying child. To qualify, a child must:

    — Have a Social Security number

    — Be under age 17 at the end of 2024

    — Be claimed as a dependent on your tax return

You qualify for the full amount of the Child Tax Credit for each qualifying child if you meet all eligibility factors and your annual income is not more than $200,000 ($400,000 if filing a joint return).

    What’s different this year?

The IRS has expanded a program that allows people to file their taxes directly with the agency for free. The federal Direct File program, which permits taxpayers to calculate and submit their returns without using commercial tax preparation software, is now available to taxpayers in 25 states, up from 12 states that were part of last year’s pilot program.

The program allows people in some states with very simple W-2s to calculate and submit their returns directly to the IRS. Those using the pilot program in 2024 claimed more than $90 million in refunds, the IRS said in October.

It’s that time of year again – tax season has officially begun! If you’re like many Americans, you’re probably wondering when you can expect to receive your tax refund.

The good news is that the IRS has announced that they will begin processing tax returns on January 27, 2020. In general, most refunds are issued within 21 days of the IRS receiving your tax return. However, this timeline can vary depending on the complexity of your return and how you choose to receive your refund (direct deposit, paper check, etc.).

To help you estimate when you might receive your refund, the IRS has also provided a handy tool called “Where’s My Refund?” on their website. Simply input your Social Security number, filing status, and the exact amount of your refund, and the tool will give you an estimated date of when you can expect to receive your money.

So, get those tax returns filed early, and hopefully, you’ll have your refund in hand sooner rather than later!

It’s been snowing all morning in Waukegan, a working class, heavily immigrant city just outside Chicago. It’s freezing, but the line outside the United Giving Hope Church stretches down the block. About 50 immigrants, mostly women and children, are waiting to pick up food donations.

As she opens the door for them, Pastor Julie Contreras yells: “What kind of people are we!?”

    “Without fear!” they answer.

But in this community, even standing out in public now feels terrifying to many. Immigrants make up 30% of the population here, many from Mexico and Honduras. In the first week of the Trump administration, federal immigration officials conducted raids in several cities across the US, including in this area. Nationwide, more than thousand people suspected of being in the country without legal status were arrested over the weekend The Trump administration says it’s focusing on migrants who present a public safety threat in what it calls a historic crackdown. But the ramped up enforcement has already upended how immigrants and mixed status families go about their daily lives. In the crowd, a young woman named Rosa stands out, her belly is enormous. She’s six months pregnant. “We’re afraid,” she says. “We’re staying indoors, to avoid deportation.”

Rosa is in the country without legal status, so she’s asked that NPR withhold her last name.

She says she’s missed her recent appointments with her OB-GYN because she’s too scared to go to her doctor. If the mood here stays this tense, she says, she might not go at all.

The Trump administration is going out of its way to publicize its crackdown. This weekend’s immigration roundups in the Chicago area included television personality Phil McGraw, better known as Dr. Phil, followed White House Border Czar Tom Homan. Dr. Phil’s cameras rolled as ICE took enforcement actions.

Homan highlighted the case of one immigrant who he said does not have legal status and is a convicted sex offender. “This is an example of Sanctuary cities”, said Homan. “You have an illegal alien convicted of sex crimes involving children. He’s walking the streets of Chicago.”

Homan says, these are the types of criminals ICE agents are going after. But advocates here say, it’s thrown all migrants into a deep panic.

After the church food giveaway, one family invites us over to their home. We meet Lupita, a very timid 12 year old who hopes to become a lawyer someday.

She’s a US citizen, but her parents are in the country illegally so they’ve asked NPR to withhold their last name. When she retires to do her homework, her mother, Rosa, tells us it’s more than just normal teenage angst keeping Lupita in her bedroom. With the news of the immigration raids, she has become withdrawn. “We’ve told her some very hard times are coming”, says Rosa. “That she might go to school and when she comes back, we will no longer be here.”

They’ve been discussing the possibility of sending her to a therapist to treat her for anxiety.

Everyone in this family is shaken. “Every day we wake up afraid,” Rosa says.

Inside their home, which they’ve owned for years, they show us family photos of quinceañeras, marriages, graduations, and birthdays.

Over 30 years of family life in the U.S.

“I feel a bitterness, a deep sadness,” Guadaluoe says. “I gave this country my youth.”

These days, they’re making plans in case they get deported: They’re having discussions about transferring the deed to their home to their children; who to add to their bank accounts; and making arrangements for Lupita to go live with one of her older siblings.

In order to avoid that fate, they’ve changed even their most basic routines.

“Before going outside, I look out the window, and out the door,” says Guadalupe. “If I go to the store, I scan the parking lot for the police first. I buy what we need quickly, and I rush back home, and lock the door behind me.”

He turns to Rosa, his wife. “Remember when we used to go to the mall, and eat popcorn, and a hot dog?” He says. “Those were the good times.”

NPR Producer Marisa Peñaloza contributed to this story.

Immigration raids have begun. For immigrant families life has changed.

The recent increase in immigration raids across the country has left many immigrant families living in fear and uncertainty. With reports of ICE agents showing up at workplaces, homes, and even schools, the threat of deportation looms large for many individuals.

Families are being torn apart, children are left without parents, and communities are left reeling from the impact of these aggressive enforcement actions. The fear of being separated from loved ones has created a sense of paranoia and anxiety among immigrant communities.

As the Trump administration continues to crack down on undocumented immigrants, it is important to remember the human toll these policies are taking. Families are being forced to make difficult choices, living in constant fear of being torn apart.

With the ongoing raids and the heightened enforcement efforts, immigrant families are facing a new reality. The uncertainty of what the future holds has left many feeling vulnerable and isolated.

As we navigate through these challenging times, it is crucial to remember the humanity of those affected by these policies. Immigrant families are not statistics or political pawns – they are individuals with hopes, dreams, and families just like anyone else.

Let us stand in solidarity with immigrant communities during this difficult time and work towards creating a more just and compassionate immigration system. The lives of immigrant families depend on it.

  • ‘Deportation flights have begun’ as Trump sends ‘strong and clear message,’ White House says

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt announced Friday that “deportation flights have begun,” releasing photos of people boarding military aircraft.

“President Trump is sending a strong and clear message to the entire world: if you illegally enter the United States of America, you will face severe consequences,” she wrote on X.

One of the photos was taken at Biggs Army Airfield at Fort Bliss in El Paso, Texas, U.S. Customs and Border Protection sources said. The sources added that the plane in the image holds 80 people and departed for Guatemala on Thursday at 5 p.m. local time.

“We can confirm that overnight, two DOD aircraft conducted repatriation flights from the US to Guatemala,” a U.S. defense official told Fox News.

TRUMP’S ICE NABS CHILD SEX OFFENDERS AMONG 530+ ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS CAUGHT IN SINGLE DAY

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt released this image Friday, writing on X that “deportation flights have begun.” Sources tell Fox News that this photo was taken at Biggs Army Airfield at Fort Bliss in El Paso, Texas, and that the aircraft departed for Guatemala.

Rep. Tony Gonazles, R-Texas. said his district “has been ground zero for the border crisis and will be ground zero for DEPORTATION operations.

“In 4 days President Trump has done more to protect our country than Biden did in 4 years,” Gonazles added on X.

Additional U.S. troops also have arrived and started putting up wire near the Ysleta Port of Entry in El Paso, the CBP told Fox News.

Acting Secretary of Defense Robert Salesses said Wednesday that he approved the Department of Defense sending military aircraft “to support DHS deportation flights of more than five thousand illegal aliens from the San Diego, California, and El Paso, Texas sectors detained by Customs and Border Protection.

“DHS will provide inflight law enforcement, and the State Department will obtain the requisite diplomatic clearances and provide host-nation notification,” he said.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) arrested a number of child sex offenders, as well as gang members and other criminals, among the more than 530 illegal immigrants it caught on Thursday.

The haul is the latest day of busy work for ICE, which is leading the mass deportation operation launched by the new administration. Before Thursday, ICE had made 460 arrests since Trump was inaugurated.

People are seen boarding a U.S. military aircraft. The White House announced Friday that “deportation flights have begun” in the U.S. (White House)

On Thursday, ICE agents also detained several workers at a fish market in Newark, N.J., Fox 5 NY reported.

Newark Mayor Ras Baraka slammed the operation as an “egregious act” and a violation of the Fourth Amendment after agents reportedly swooped in to raid the business “without producing a warrant.”

Baraka said that one of those detained is a U.S. military veteran who “suffered the indignity of having the legitimacy of his military documentation questioned.”

“This egregious act is in plain violation of the Fourth Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, which guarantees ‘the right of the people be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures….’” Baraka wrote in a statement.

“Newark will not stand by idly while people are being unlawfully terrorized,” Barak said, adding that he is “ready and willing to defend and protect civil and human rights.”

Fox News’ Brooke Taylor, Adam Shaw and Michael Dorgan contributed to this report.

In a recent announcement, the White House has confirmed that deportation flights have begun as part of President Trump’s efforts to crack down on illegal immigration. This move is said to send a “strong and clear message” to those who are in the country unlawfully.

The White House has stated that these deportation flights are a necessary step to enforce immigration laws and protect American citizens. President Trump has long been a vocal advocate for stricter border control measures and has made it a priority of his administration to address the issue of illegal immigration.

Critics of the deportation flights argue that they are inhumane and do not address the root causes of illegal immigration. However, the White House maintains that these flights are a crucial component of their larger immigration enforcement strategy.

As the deportation flights continue, it remains to be seen how this will impact the broader immigration debate in the United States. Stay tuned for further updates on this developing story.
