  • Brett Favre believes Mark Gastineau exchange ‘a setup’ by ESPN

Former NFL quarterback Brett Favre shared his thoughts on the recent exchange between Mark Gastineau and ESPN, calling it “a setup.” In a recent interview, Gastineau, a former NFL player, got emotional while discussing his battle with health issues and blamed the NFL for not taking care of former players. Favre believes that ESPN intentionally put Gastineau in a difficult position to elicit a strong emotional response for the sake of ratings. Favre expressed his disappointment in the network’s tactics and called for more respectful and thoughtful journalism when covering sensitive topics like player health and safety.

  • Ex-NBA Champion believes Kyrie Irving deserved All-Star nod over Steph Curry

The NBA unveiled the “reserves” for the 2025 NBA All-Star Game on Thursday evening, finalizing the 24-man player pool. And for the first time in the 2020s, no Dallas Maverick was selected, as Kyrie Irving and Luka Doncic weren’t chosen by the NBA coaches, despite both finishing in the top six of Western Conference guard voting.

Doncic’s exclusion wasn’t a surprise; he’s been hurt since Christmas Day with a calf strain and has played in just 22 of Dallas’ 49 games to this point. There’s no games-played requirement for the All-Star Game like there is with postseason awards, so Doncic technically could’ve been selected, but it’ll also give him another week to rest.

Irving’s exclusion was shocking to many people around the NBA, including former NBA Champion and a former teammate of Kyrie Irving, Kendrick Perkins. He had this to say on ESPN

“I look at a guy like Steph Curry making the All-Star Game this season, and I look at a lot of guys like Kyrie Irving, Devin Booker, De’Aaron Fox, just in this conference who had better seasons, or are playing better than [Curry]. I’m going to say the quiet thing out loud: Steph Curry should not be an All-Star. He shouldn’t! No matter what the fans want, no matter what the coaches want, no matter what we want to see, you still have to earn to be an All-Star by your production. And if you’re looking at the production around the league, it’s guys in the Western Conference that have better numbers than Steph, and their teams are in better positions than Steph.”

Comparing just Stephen Curry and Kyrie Irving, Perkins has a point. Irving is averaging 24.3 PPG, 4.9 RPG, and 4.6 APG while shooting nearly 50/40/90, while Curry is at 22.1 PPG, 6.2 APG, and 4.6 RPG, but isn’t as efficient from three or the floor as Irving is (the degree of difficulty on Curry’s threes are higher, for what it’s worth).

Irving also has the Mavericks at 26-23, sitting 9th in the Western Conference, while Curry’s Warriors are 24-24 in 11th. At the very least, it’s neck and neck, but Curry was voted as a starter, while Irving will be spending the week at home, barring an injury replacement being needed.

Former NBA champion and current analyst, Kendrick Perkins, recently voiced his opinion that Kyrie Irving deserved an All-Star nod over Steph Curry this season. Perkins argued that Irving’s performance on the court this season has been exceptional and that he has been a more impactful player for the Brooklyn Nets than Curry has been for the Golden State Warriors.

Perkins praised Irving’s scoring ability, playmaking skills, and leadership on the court, emphasizing that he has been a key factor in the Nets’ success this season. He also pointed out Irving’s impressive stats, including his scoring average and shooting percentages, as evidence of his All-Star caliber performance.

While Curry is undoubtedly one of the greatest shooters in NBA history and has had a strong season as well, Perkins believes that Irving’s overall impact on the game should have earned him a spot in the All-Star game over Curry.

It’s clear that opinions on this topic may vary, but it’s interesting to hear a former NBA champion like Perkins make a case for Irving over Curry. Do you agree with his assessment? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.

  • ‘I dogwalked Izzy’ … Sean Strickland believes his striking is ‘lightyears’ ahead of Dricus du Plessis

Former UFC middleweight champion Sean Strickland believes he has better striking skills than current champion Dricus du Plessis, especially when comparing their fights against Israel Adesanya.

While not the flashiest fighter in the UFC, Strickland has been a tricky puzzle for many fighters. ‘Tarzan’ utilizes a sharp jab, stabbing teeps, a great gas tank, and impeccable defense to pressure his opponents into fighting his fight.

His style culminated in his masterwork against Israel Adesanya, an incredibly accomplished kickboxer and then-middleweight champion. Sizeable underdog Strickland secured a decision against Adesanya, jabbing him pillar to post and knocking him down in the first round.

Du Plessis dethroned Strickland at UFC 297 in 2024. ‘Stillknocks’ went on to submit Adesanya in his first title defense and, comparing their fights with ‘Stylebender,’ Strickland has concluded that he’s the better striker.

Sean Strickland believes he has better striking than Dricus du Plessis after Israel Adesanya performances

On the UFC 312 Countdown, Strickland remarked that Du Plessis “does nothing right” and that Adesanya beat him in the striking before the submission.

“The thing about Dricus is he does nothing right but it always works out,” Strickland remarked. “. . . I think my striking’s lightyears better than his. Izzy was beating him in striking; I dogwalked Izzy.”

Strickland lost his title to Du Plessis in a highly contentious split decision. It was a near 50-50 split on media members’ scorecards, and fans had Du Plessis losing the fight, per MMA Decisions.

Sean Strickland gets a second chance at greatness at UFC 312

Strickland and Du Plessis will face off for the middleweight throne in the main event of UFC 312 on February 8. The full card is as follows, subject to change:

I dogwalked Izzy: Sean Strickland believes his striking is ‘lightyears’ ahead of Dricus du Plessis

In a recent interview, UFC middleweight contender Sean Strickland didn’t hold back when discussing his upcoming opponent, Dricus du Plessis. Strickland, known for his no-nonsense attitude, confidently stated that his striking skills are “lightyears” ahead of du Plessis.

“I’ve watched his fights, I know what he brings to the table,” Strickland said. “But let’s be real here, I dogwalked Izzy [Israel Adesanya] in sparring, and he’s one of the best strikers in the world. Dricus is good, but he’s not on my level when it comes to stand-up.”

Strickland, who is coming off an impressive victory over Uriah Hall, is looking to make a statement in his next fight against du Plessis. The South African fighter has been on a tear in the UFC, with notable wins over the likes of Trevin Giles and Brendan Allen.

But Strickland remains unfazed by his opponent’s recent success, confident in his own abilities to come out on top.

“I’m not here to play games, I’m here to dominate,” Strickland declared. “Dricus better be ready for a war, because I’m bringing everything I’ve got to this fight.”

Fans can expect fireworks when these two middleweights face off in the Octagon, as both fighters are known for their aggressive fighting styles. Will Strickland’s striking prowess be enough to overcome du Plessis’ skills, or will the South African contender prove to be a tough challenge for the surging American? Stay tuned to find out.

  • NBA News: Kawhi Leonard believes James Harden and another Clippers teammate deserve All-Star nods

Los Angeles Clippers pulled off an impressive 127-117 victory over the Milwaukee Bucks, powered by stellar performances from James Harden and Norman Powell. After the game, Kawhi Leonard praised his teammates and expressed his belief that both Harden and Powell deserve spots on the NBA All-Star roster.

“[James Harden] and [Norman Powell] closing out that game was special,” Leonard said. “It was great, very special. Them taking on the challenge, getting to their spots—they made it look easy.”

Leonard went on to highlight their consistency this season: “They’ve been playing great all year. There’s a lot of politics in [All-Star selections]. I’m not sure if they’re going to give us two players, but hopefully, they do. They’ve been playing at a high level.”

James Harden delivered a game-high 40 points, along with five rebounds and nine assists. He shot 12-of-24 from the field and went a perfect 12-of-12 from the free-throw line. Meanwhile, Norman Powell contributed 33 points, six rebounds, and three steals on 11-of-23 shooting. The Clippers improved to an impressive 22-8 (.733 win percentage) this season in games where Powell scores at least 18 points.

Harden: All-Star recognition is secondary to team goals

A 10-time NBA All-Star, James Harden remains one of the league’s most respected players, but he downplayed the significance of individual accolades this season.

“It would mean a lot,” Harden said when asked about potentially earning another All-Star nod. “I think it would be my 10th or 11th. Just being one of the top 24 players in this league—I feel like I deserve it. But I’m not going to campaign for myself. I just go out there, put the work in, and it is what it is.”

Harden emphasized that team success is his primary focus: “We’re, what, top five or top six [in the standings]? [Norm] is shooting the ball at a high clip, leading our team in scoring. Somebody’s got to make it. We’ve put the work in and put ourselves in a really good position. But that’s out of our control. For us, I think we’re just focused on continuing to rack up wins because we’ve got a bigger goal than All-Star Games.”

Harden has been productive this season, averaging 21.7 points, 5.9 rebounds, 8.3 assists, and 1.4 steals per game on 39.7% shooting from the field and 34.4% from three-point range. He’s one of only three players in the Western Conference averaging at least 20 points, five rebounds, and eight assists per game.

    Powell’s case for All-Star selection

Norman Powell has been equally impactful, showcasing his offensive firepower. Powell is averaging 23.9 points, 3.5 rebounds, 2.2 assists, 1.3 steals, and 3.5 made three-pointers per game on 49% shooting from the field and 43.1% from beyond the arc. He has scored 20+ points in 28 of the 37 games he has played this NBA season.

“I think I’ve been playing at an All-Star level all season,” Powell told ClutchPoints. “Honestly, I don’t like talking about myself, but numbers don’t lie—where I’m at, what I’m averaging, what I’m doing across the board, and the efficiency that I’m playing with. I see myself as an All-Star, I want to be an All-Star, and I think I am.”

As the Clippers continue to climb in the standings, the performances of Harden and Powell remain pivotal. Whether or not both players earn All-Star nods, their impact on the Clippers’ success this season is undeniable.

In a recent interview, Kawhi Leonard shared his thoughts on the upcoming NBA All-Star game, expressing his belief that James Harden and another one of his Clippers teammates deserve spots on the All-Star roster.

Leonard praised Harden’s performance since joining the Clippers, highlighting his scoring ability and overall impact on the team. He also mentioned another teammate who he believes has been playing at an All-Star level but may not receive the recognition he deserves.

With the All-Star game fast approaching, Leonard’s endorsement of his teammates adds to the ongoing debate about who should be selected for the prestigious event. Fans will have to wait and see if Harden and his Clippers teammate ultimately earn their spots on the All-Star roster.

Volodymyr Zelensky has stated his belief that a deal to end Russia’s war in Ukraine could be made under Donald Trump’s presidency but demanded Kyiv be included in any peace talks.

The Ukrainian president also said on Saturday that the terms of any deal that might arise under the new US president were still unclear – and might not even be clear to Trump himself – because Vladimir Putin had no interest in ending the war.

However, the Russian president has emphasised that he is open for talks with Trump on a broad range of issues including his country’s war in Ukraine, telling a state TV journalist on Friday: “We believe the current president’s statements about his readiness to work together. We are always open to this and ready for negotiations.”

Trump, who took office on Monday, has, in turn, expressed willingness to speak to Putin about ending the war, a contrast with the outgoing administration of Joe Biden, who shunned the Russian leader. Trump even promised during his election campaign to end the war within his first 24 hours in the White House – without saying how, and aides have since suggested that a deal could take months.

And Zelensky has now stressed that ending the war would not be possible unless Trump includes Ukraine itself in any negotiations.

Speaking at a press conference on Saturday alongside Moldova’s president, Maia Sandu, a visiting ally, Zelensky said: “Otherwise it will not work. Because Russia does not want to end the war, while Ukraine wants to end it.”

In a separate interview broadcast later that day, Zelensky said he believed Trump truly wanted to see an end to the war, nearing the three-year mark next month, describing the US president as understanding all the challenges associated with the peace process and “simply saying this has to end or it will get worse”.

Speaking to Italian journalist Cecilia Sala, who was released this month after being detained for 21 days in Iran, Zelensky added: “For now, we don’t know how this will happen because we don’t know the details. I believe President Trump himself does not know all the details. Because I would say so much depends on what sort of just peace we can achieve. And whether Putin wants, in principle, to stop the war. I believe he doesn’t want to.”

Kyiv, long worried about the prospect of its fate being decided by bigger powers without its participation, has said it is working to arrange a meeting between Zelensky and Trump.

Addressing journalists earlier alongside Sandu, Zelensky said he believed European allies should also be included in any future peace talks.

“As for what the set-up of the talks will be: Ukraine, I really hope Ukraine will be there, America, Europe and the Russians,” he said. “Yes, I would really want that Europe would take part, because we will be members of the European Union.” Ukraine and Moldova both submitted applications to join the EU days after Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022.

On Friday, Putin said he would like to meet Trump to talk about Ukraine but cited a 2022 decree from Zelensky barring talks with Putin as a barrier to negotiations.

Zelensky said on Saturday he had introduced this ban to stop Putin from forming channels of communication with other groups in Ukraine, which he said Russia had attempted, particularly those advocating separatist views.

“I therefore took an absolutely fair decision,” he said. “I am the president of Ukraine and the leader of these or any other talks and I banned all the others.”

On Sunday, Zelensky said Russia had used 1,250 aerial bombs, over 750 attack drones and more than 20 missiles to attack Ukraine over the past week, calling on his country’s partners “to act in unity”.

Ukraine’s military said its air defences downed 50 of 72 drones launched by Russia overnight, with no casualties or damage reported.

Meanwhile, Kyiv’s general staff said its forces attacked one of Russia’s largest oil refineries in the city of Ryazan again overnight, with explosions and fire reported in the target area.

Russia’s Defence Ministry said its air defence systems destroyed 15 Ukrainian drones over Russia and two sea drones in the Black Sea on Sunday.

Russian troops, meanwhile, have seized the town of Zelene and the village of Velyka Novosilka in Ukraine’s eastern Donetsk region, Russian news agencies reported on Sunday, citing the defence ministry, in battlefield reports that could not be independently verified.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky believes that former President Donald Trump could potentially help end Russia’s war on Ukraine, but only if Ukraine is included in peace talks. Zelensky has expressed his willingness to work with Trump to find a resolution to the conflict, but insists that Ukraine must have a seat at the table in any negotiations.

In a recent interview, Zelensky stated, “I believe that President Trump could play a crucial role in bringing an end to the war in Ukraine, but it is essential that Ukraine be included in any peace talks. We cannot allow our country to be sidelined in discussions about our own future.”

Zelensky’s comments come as tensions continue to escalate between Russia and Ukraine, with ongoing fighting in the eastern region of Donbas and fears of a potential full-scale invasion by Russian forces. The Ukrainian president has called for international support in standing up to Russian aggression and has emphasized the importance of a diplomatic solution to the conflict.

While Trump’s exact role in resolving the conflict remains unclear, Zelensky’s willingness to engage with the former president highlights the urgency of finding a peaceful resolution to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Only time will tell if Trump will take up Zelensky’s offer and use his influence to help bring an end to the war.

  • Analyst believes Alyssa Thomas’ core designation could affect fiancee DeWanna Bonner’s future

With the WNBA free agency now in full swing, the Connecticut Sun wasted no time in giving Alyssa Thomas a core-player designation, essentially allowing the franchise to make her a restricted free agent. As WNBA reporter Madeline Kenney wrote in an article for the New York Post on Monday, however, the fact that the Sun cored Thomas could have an impact on her fiancée, DeWanna Bonner.

Because the franchise now has a chance to hold on to Thomas through the WNBA free agency, they could also end up retaining Bonner. As Kenney wrote in an article for The Post, the fact that the team might keep Thomas could indicate that Bonner will stay with the Sun as well.

At 38 years old, Bonner, a two-time WNBA champion and six-time All-Star, is certainly on the tail-end of her career. However, she has continued to show her dominance year after year.

In addition to playing all 40 games in back-to-back seasons, Bonner is still producing at a rate consistent with her career points per game average of 14.9, averaging 17.4 in 2023 and 15.0 in 2024.

Given that, as the Sun looks to win their first title in franchise history, retaining both Thomas and Bonner through the WNBA free agency period would certainly be a big plus for the team.

Could Alyssa Thomas wind up parting ways with the Sun despite core-player designation in WNBA Free Agency?

The WNBA’s core player designation means that teams around the league can essentially mark certain players as restricted free agents, however, that doesn’t mean that Thomas will be with the Sun to start the 2025 WNBA season.

The WNBA’s core-player designation allows the Sun to cut out other teams by offering Thomas a one-year supermax contract.

Although the two sides could use that as an opportunity to negotiate a long-term deal, with the WNBA expected to finalize a new CBA before the 2026 season, Thomas and plenty of other players are targeting one-year deals.

Because of that, the two options seem to be either the Sun hold on to Thomas, or after receiving her core-player designation to kick off the WNBA Free Agency, she requests a trade.

Although she hasn’t done so, last season Thomas notably expressed frustration over the fact that the Sun doesn’t have a dedicated practice facility. Back in September, before their first playoff game with the Indiana Fever, the team was practicing at a community rec center.

Given that, Thomas’s expressed frustration could be an indication that she may not want to stick around in Connecticut this season.
