  • How Real Madrid have found form under Carlo Ancelotti: Vinicius, Mbappe, Bellingham, Rodrygo

Injuries, particularly in defence to the likes of Eder Militao and Dani Carvajal, did not help matters at the start.

But Ancelotti’s main problems lay in the lack of a midfield to control games and the unwillingness of any of the stellar front three to put in a shift tracking back. And Jude Bellingham did not know where to run to cover so much ground.

The renewed vigour being displayed by Dani Ceballos in midfield has helped, but it is their displays in attack that have really made the difference to Real’s fortunes.

Where to begin with Vinicius Jr, who seems to be the focus of everyone’s attention whether playing or not.

The Brazil attacker has been in and out of the line-up recently, either through injury or suspension, and is currently the subject of a colossal offer from Saudi Arabia.

The story has been allowed to ‘gain legs’ by the Real decision makers who control the agenda, thanks to a compliant Madrid media who will focus on it for as long as it suits the club for them to do so.

The money injected by the sale of the 24-year-old would go a long way to paying for the stadium debt, along with a number of other financial benefits.

Real would certainly not be scared of selling the player, but the timing has to be right.

Much has been made about what is seen as Vinicius’ confrontational approach to taunts from opposition fans.

In the latest incident, he responded to chants of “tonto” (stupid) from Valencia supporters earlier this month by making a hand gesture suggesting the La Liga strugglers are going to be relegated.

In his defence, no single player I have seen has received the level of abuse that is dished out to him, including numerous examples of racism from fans.

Anyone expecting a bowed head and closed mouth reaction from Vinicius is going to have a lengthy wait.

He believes the abuse he receives is as unjust as it is fundamentally racist and not something he is prepared to endure.

On the field, Vinicius’ developing understanding with Mbappe is another of the reasons for Real’s improved performances.

The Frenchman had a tricky start to his Madrid career, but it is becoming clearer by the day that Real’s success will revolve around making Mbappe the main goalscoring focus – and leader.

Mbappe was always too intelligent, too talented and too precocious to fail, or buckle under the pressure, at Real Madrid.

He originally saw playing as a number nine as a more static role than he does now, and was conscious of not being seen to invade Vinicius’ space – on and off the pitch – even going as far as accepting that penalties would be rotated.

These days wherever he appears on the pitch the team adapt to him accordingly. He has also accepted that as a number nine he can be lethal, not so much with his back to goal but by running in behind and finishing clinically.

Since missing a penalty against Athletic Club on 4 December, he has scored 12 goals in as many matches, including his first hat-trick.

He is now the club’s official penalty taker. And even Vinicius admitted the team will do all they can so Mbappe becomes the top scorer in both La Liga and the Champions League.

Real Madrid have been on fire under the guidance of manager Carlo Ancelotti, with key players like Vinicius Junior, Kylian Mbappe, Jude Bellingham, and Rodrygo putting in stellar performances.

Vinicius Junior has been a standout player for Real Madrid this season, showcasing his blistering pace and eye for goal. The Brazilian winger has been a constant threat to opposition defenses and has become a key player in Ancelotti’s attacking setup.

The rumors of Kylian Mbappe potentially joining Real Madrid have only added fuel to the fire, with fans eagerly anticipating the French superstar’s potential arrival at the club. Mbappe’s pace, skill, and goalscoring ability would undoubtedly take Real Madrid to another level.

Jude Bellingham has been a revelation in midfield, providing energy, creativity, and defensive solidity. The young Englishman has quickly become a fan favorite at the Santiago Bernabeu and has formed a formidable partnership with the likes of Luka Modric and Casemiro.

Rodrygo has also been in fine form, showcasing his versatility and technical ability on the wing. The Brazilian youngster has scored crucial goals and provided important assists, proving himself to be a valuable asset for Ancelotti’s side.

With these key players firing on all cylinders, Real Madrid have found form under Carlo Ancelotti and look like serious contenders for silverware this season. Fans will be hoping that this impressive run of form continues as the club aims to reclaim its status as one of the top teams in Europe.

¡Vamos Real Madrid!

  • Real Madrid player ratings vs Valencia: Jude Bellingham rescues loony Los Blancos! England star makes up for penalty miss with late winner after Vinicius Junior sees red card in chaotic clash against La Liga strugglers

Real Madrid player ratings vs Valencia: Jude Bellingham rescues loony Los Blancos! England star makes up for penalty miss with late winner after Vinicius Junior sees red card in chaotic clash against La Liga strugglers

Carlo Ancelotti’s side endured a baffling evening at Mestalla, but were rescued by some late magic by their star man.

Real Madrid played out one of the more confusing football matches in recent La Liga history Friday night, missing a penalty, having Vinicius Jr sent off, but coming back from behind to snag a 2-1 win over Valencia.

Los Blancos looked to have lost it after 85 minutes, but late goals from first Luka Modric, then Jude Bellingham saw them claw their way to a 2-1 victory.

The home team were more adventurous in the first half, and forced Thibaut Courtois into a few tidy saves in the early goings. The Madrid keeper could do little about the opener, though, his instinctive save falling into the path of Hugo Duro, who couldn’t miss from less than five yards out. Los Blancos, for their part, created in moments, but were well denied by the active Stole Dimitrievski, who made three tidy saves in the first half.

They had a clear chance to equalise after 53 minutes, when Kylian Mbappe was nudged over in the box – but Jude Bellingham’s penalty hit the post. Further disappointment followed after Mbappe put the ball in the net, only to see it waved off for offside. Vinicius Jr seemed to have ruined the evening after being baited into a silly shove of Dimitrievski – earning himself a soft but fair red card.

But Madrid stayed alive, Luka Modric equalising off the bench with six minutes in normal time remaining. And they somehow found a winner soon after, Bellingham latching onto a horrific backpass before finishing calmly into the bottom corner to complete the unlikeliest of turnarounds.

GOAL rates Real Madrid’s players from Mestalla…

Real Madrid secured a hard-fought 2-1 victory against Valencia in a chaotic clash at the Mestalla, with Jude Bellingham rescuing the loony Los Blancos with a late winner.

Here are the player ratings for Real Madrid:

    Thibaut Courtois – 7/10
The Belgian shot-stopper made some crucial saves to keep Real Madrid in the game.

    Alvaro Odriozola – 6/10
A solid performance from the full-back, who provided width going forward.

    Eder Militao – 6/10
Militao put in a decent shift at the back, but struggled at times against Valencia’s attack.

    David Alaba – 7/10
The versatile defender was solid in defense and provided composure on the ball.

    Ferland Mendy – 6/10
Mendy had a quiet game but did his defensive duties well.

    Casemiro – 7/10
The Brazilian midfielder worked tirelessly in midfield and helped break up Valencia’s attacks.

    Luka Modric – 8/10
Modric was the creative force in midfield, pulling the strings and setting up chances for his teammates.

    Federico Valverde – 7/10
Valverde put in a tireless shift in midfield, covering a lot of ground and winning the ball back.

    Vinicius Junior – 5/10
The young winger had a night to forget, as he was sent off for a reckless challenge in the first half.

    Karim Benzema – 8/10
Benzema was a constant threat up front, scoring Real Madrid’s first goal and linking up well with his teammates.

    Jude Bellingham – 9/10
The England star was the hero for Real Madrid, making up for his penalty miss with a late winner to secure all three points for his team.

Overall, it was a chaotic but ultimately successful night for Real Madrid, with Bellingham’s heroics rescuing them from a potential slip-up against La Liga strugglers Valencia.

Real Madrid have kicked off their 2025 with an ever-tricky tie at Mestalla against Valencia, and just when it seemed things were turning their way, fortuned favoured the post. Jude Bellingham had a golden opportunity to equalise for Los Blancos, but could not do the business from 12 yards.

Los Blancos have struggled with penalties of late, with Kylian Mbappe missing against both Liverpool and Athletic Club in the back end of 2024. He won this penalty, but as he did against Getafe, elected to pass the ball to a teammate, in this case Bellingham.

The England star stepped up, stuttered, and found the inside of the post, but not the back of the net.

Mbappe would have a goal disallowed just minutes later, from a Bellingham assist. He was ruled offside by the smallest of margins, negating a lovely finish. Los Blancos have it all to do still though, with less than half an hour on the clock.

In a thrilling match between Real Madrid and Valencia, Jude Bellingham stole the spotlight with a missed penalty after a delayed run-up. The young midfielder, known for his composure on the pitch, shocked fans as he approached the ball with a stuttering run-up before sending his shot wide of the goal.

Despite his mistake, Bellingham’s confidence and determination were evident throughout the match, and his missed penalty served as a reminder that even the best players can falter under pressure.

Everyone loves a ‘Cupset’ and it doesn’t get much bigger than knocking out the biggest club of all: Real Madrid.

That’s the task awaiting Real Mallorca, a club that’s only in its fourth season back in LaLiga having fallen as low as the third tier of Spanish football in 2017.

Mallorca may be seen as one of the lesser sides in Spain’s top flight, however, amid all the noise that constantly surrounds the Madrid clubs and Barcelona, the Balaeric Island team have been quietly and effectively going about their business.

A first appearance at the Copa del Rey final since 2003 last term has been followed by an encouraging start to this season which sees them lie sixth in LaLiga.

Few will give them a prayer of achieving Supercopa de Espana glory in Saudi Arabia, with a final date against Barcelona the likely outcome should Mallorca pull off a semi-final triumph against Los Blancos on 9 January.

However, there’s a quiet confidence among those in the camp of Los Bermellones, and while they’re a team not typically associated with the big prizes in Spain, their ownership group know a thing or two about winning.

“We have very special ownership,” Mallorca CEO Alfonso Diaz told talkSPORT.com.

“They have this winning mentality, they know a lot about sports, they have been former sportsmen.

“We have Andy Kohlberg who was a former tennis player, he is our main owner and president. We have Steve Nash, basketball legend and Hall of Famer.

“We have Steve Kerr, nine times NBA champion, now the coach of the Golden State Warriors…

“So all of them know what sports is about, they have this passion, they know that they have this long-term view and they have this winning mentality.

“It’s really special to go with them day by day and every piece of advice that they are giving and the passion and the sport and the vision they have is amazing. I think that is the big part of the success of the club.”

Nash and Kerr boast a plethora of honours from their playing careers, while the latter is making a name for himself in the coaching game with four NBA championships in charge of Warriors.

No challenge intimidates Kerr in particular, who once infamously took a punch to the face from teammate Michael Jordan during an especially feisty Chicago Bulls training session in 1995, who has even played coach of the current crop of Mallorca stars.

“They [the ownership group] fully understand when you lose games, they know because they have suffered this for a time and they know that you lose more than you win,” Diaz added.

“And they have this passion and they give this advice and they understand that you need time to build all this base to continue growing.

“So it’s day by day, I wouldn’t say one thing is special, but it’s day by day, all the conversations, small conversations, when they come and travel to Mallorca to visit the camp, when they are with the team, with the players.

“Steve Kerr came this summer and the speech he did for the players was amazing.”

“[Kerr said] Every player in the team is important, that everybody has their own role in the team, no matter if you are playing or not.

“It was important because in the case of Steve Kerr, it happened to him. He was not in the starting five and he was with Michael Jordan, close to him day by day. He told us how he was, his career and everything he faced and the difficulties he had.

“And all these point of views and what he lived in the past. For the players, it’s really important to understand and to listen to someone like him.”

“It’s a mix of everything we are talking now. It’s the winning mentality that the player has, the locker room culture of working hard and never giving up,” Diaz added.

“Those things seem to be very common that everybody can use, but this is really happening in our club. And then having a plan, work with, we are a few people staffing on the business side, on the sport side, but young people, very talented.

“And with this also winning mentality on and off the pitch. And this is what is making us try to be different.

“And also working a lot on our brand, brand awareness, be international. Our island is very international.

“So it’s giving us a something different in comparison with other clubs. And also the way we approach to our sponsors, to our fan base when we renovate the stadium, the different way of thinking when we renovate the stadium.

“So trying to find new revenue streams. So all these things make us, I think, a little bit different and make us, well, be there in La Liga and try to be a different club in La Liga also.”

NBA icons, including one punched by Michael Jordan, may be unlikely secret to spoiling Jude Bellingham and Kylian Mbappe’s party

In a surprising turn of events, it seems that NBA icons could hold the key to spoiling the party for young football stars Jude Bellingham and Kylian Mbappe. And the unlikely link between the two? None other than Michael Jordan.

While Jordan may be known for his basketball prowess, many may not be aware that he once punched former NBA player Steve Kerr during a practice session. This act of aggression and competitiveness could serve as a lesson for Bellingham and Mbappe, who are both rising stars in the world of football.

By channeling Jordan’s fierce determination and drive to win, perhaps Bellingham and Mbappe can find the edge they need to outshine their opponents and secure victory on the pitch. After all, as Jordan famously said, “I can accept failure, everyone fails at something. But I can’t accept not trying.”

So, as these young football phenoms continue to make a name for themselves in the sport, perhaps they can look to the NBA icons who came before them for inspiration and guidance. Who knows, maybe a little bit of Jordan’s competitive spirit is all it takes to spoil the party for Bellingham and Mbappe’s opponents.
