  • Mookie Betts Wins 2024 Babe Ruth Postseason MVP Award

The New York chapter of the Baseball Writers’ Association of America voted Mookie Betts as the winner of the 2024 Babe Ruth Award, which is presented annually to a player deemed postseason MVP.

Betts was formally recognized on Saturday night during the 100th annual New York Baseball Writers’ Dinner at the Hilton in Midtown Manhattan, where all 2024 BBWAA winners were celebrated.

The Los Angeles Dodgers also had winners in Shohei Ohtani, the 2024 National League MVP, and Freddie Freeman and his family receiving the Arthur and Milton Richman You Gotta Have Heart Award, which is presented annually to a member of the baseball community who has overcome difficult circumstances.

None of the three were in attendance, however. Ohtani recorded a video message for his NL MVP acceptance speech as he remained in Southern California due to being impacted by the recent wildfires.

Meanwhile, Betts is visiting Japan and recently surprised a group of students at an elementary school.

Betts being voted the Babe Ruth Award winner caps off a memorable year that saw him also play at an MVP-caliber level prior to suffering a fractured left hand upon being hit by a pitch.

    Mookie Betts’ postseason stats

Betts was facing plenty of scrutiny and pressure heading into the 2024 postseason and he’d fallen well short of expectations in years prior.

He went hitless in the first two games against the San Diego Padres — albeit getting robbed of a home run by Jurickson Profar making a tremendous catch — but caught fire to help the Dodgers advance past the NL Division Series and eventually win the World Series by defeating the New York Yankees.

“I know he has the talent. Obviously he’s not afraid of the situation. So for me it’s more of just go out there and compete your tail off,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said during the NLDS.

“The last few, I think there was something that was bleeding into the mindset, which it’s up to all of us to make sure that he’s in a good headspace to go out there and compete and not get too worried about each particular at-bat. … I’ll have a little conversation with him.

“And the funny thing is you look at postseason performers, it’s not that they over-performed their career stat line in the regular season. What they’ve done is that they do what they’ve done in the regular season. But on that stage they’re considered postseason players.

“So in this particular case, all we expect Mookie is to be the same player he is in the regular season. And that’s it.”

Partly behind taking hundreds of swings each day and aided by Brent Honeywell’s intentional throwing strategy during live batting practice, Betts hit .290./.387/.565 with five doubles, four home runs, 16 RBI and 11 walks over 16 postseason games.

In a stunning turn of events, Mookie Betts has been named the 2024 Babe Ruth Postseason MVP Award winner. The star outfielder had an incredible performance throughout the postseason, leading his team to victory and solidifying his place as one of the greatest players of his generation.

Betts’ clutch hitting, exceptional fielding, and overall leadership on and off the field were instrumental in his team’s success. His ability to come through in the biggest moments earned him the prestigious award, making him only the third player in history to win it multiple times.

Fans and analysts alike are in awe of Betts’ talent and determination, and many are already calling him a future Hall of Famer. With this latest accolade added to his already impressive resume, there is no doubt that Mookie Betts is a force to be reckoned with in the world of baseball. Congratulations to Mookie Betts on this well-deserved honor!

  • Betts, Rice Continue to Power UCLA’s Perfect Run

The No. 1-ranked UCLA women’s basketball team continued its undefeated season on Thursday night, defeating Rutgers, 84-66. The Bruins (19-0, 7-0) showcased their dominance once again, marking their 18th consecutive double-digit victory and solidifying their perfect record in conference play.

Junior center Lauren Betts delivered another masterful performance, tallying 25 points, 13 rebounds and five blocks. The 6-foot-7 center secured her 12th double-double of the season, further cementing her role as a cornerstone for UCLA.

Junior guard Kiki Rice added her own double-double, contributing 10 points and tying her season-high with 10 assists.

After the game, Betts spoke about the team’s emphasis on mental health and personal growth, a cornerstone of UCLA’s program.

“One of the reasons I wanted to come here is because I’m surrounded by such a great group of staff,” Betts said. “They understand how we are as people beyond basketball. They respect that there are times when we’re tired and mentally, we might not be able to do it. Taking that time to take care of ourselves and prioritize our mental well-being is super important.”

Betts also reflected on her role as a representative of women’s basketball, inspired by her childhood idol, WNBA star Aliyah Boston.

“Growing up, my favorite player to watch was Aliyah Boston. She’s just a baller,” Betts said. “Posts don’t always get recognized in the game, and she’s been such a great example of someone I want to look and play like. Her strength and skill set are incredible, and she’s someone I’ve admired since I was in middle school.”

For Rice, the game also highlighted the importance of the sport’s growing popularity.

“I remember growing up, I didn’t know much about the WNBA or who the best players were,” Rice said. “Now, it’s incredible to see so many young girls know about women’s college basketball and pro women’s basketball. The fan support is amazing, and it makes the game so fun. Playing in sold-out arenas this year has been incredible.”

Rice acknowledged the challenges of the Bruins’ grueling schedule, including long road trips, but praised the team’s resilience.

“We’re figuring out the mix of downtime and time together as a team,” she said. “It’s definitely challenging, but I think we’re doing a good job of handling it.”

With their victory over Rutgers, UCLA’s focus now shifts to a top-10 matchup against No. 8 Maryland on Sunday. The game at XFINITY Center will test the Bruins’ road mettle and provide another opportunity for this team to solidify its championship aspirations.

As they continue their remarkable season, the Bruins are not just playing for banners and accolades — they are representing the growth of women’s basketball and inspiring the next generation of players and fans.

In a statement win over Oregon, UCLA’s dynamic duo of Johnny Juzang and Jaime Jaquez Jr. put on a show, combining for 55 points to lead the Bruins to a perfect 11-0 start to the season. The high-flying offense of UCLA was on full display, as they shot 55% from the field and 46% from three-point range.

However, it was the play of Cody Riley and Tyger Campbell that truly stood out. Riley dominated the paint, finishing with a double-double of 15 points and 10 rebounds, while Campbell orchestrated the offense with 10 assists and only 1 turnover.

But the real stars of the show were Juzang and Jaquez, who continue to be the driving force behind UCLA’s success this season. Juzang poured in a game-high 28 points, showcasing his smooth shooting stroke and ability to create his own shot off the dribble. Jaquez, on the other hand, added 27 points, showcasing his versatility as a scorer and defender.

With a perfect record and a high-powered offense led by Betts and Rice, UCLA looks poised to make a deep run in March Madness. The rest of the college basketball world better watch out, because the Bruins are firing on all cylinders and show no signs of slowing down.

  • No. 1 UCLA, Betts too much to handle as Rutgers Women’s Basketball loses eighth straight

No. 1 UCLA, Betts too much to handle as Rutgers loses eighth straight

The city of Los Angeles sits at the top of the Big Ten world, and in its first year in the conference, there have been no growing pains, even considering the cross-country travel.

No. 1 UCLA weathered that storm and took down Rutgers 84-66 on Thursday night as the Scarlet Knights (8-12, 0-9) saw their losing streak reach eight consecutive games.

The Bruins (19-0, 7-0) – one of two undefeated teams left in the country along with LSU at 20-0 – overwhelmed Rutgers with its size and passing ability, led by star center Lauren Betts. She finished with an efficient double-double, scoring 25 points on 12-for-16 shooting with 13 rebounds. UCLA had three other scorers in double-figures, with Londynn Jones, Angela Dugalic, and Kiki Rice scoring 12, 11, and 10 points respectively. Rice finished with a double-double with a game-high 10 assists.

Destiny Adams notched her seventh double-double in the last eight games, scoring 15 points and grabbing 13 rebounds before fouling out in the fourth quarter. Kiyomi McMiller struggled to start the game but finished leading the Scarlet Knights in scoring with 17 points on 7-for-20 shooting with five rebounds and four assists. JoJo Lacey was the lone other Rutgers player in double-figures with 14 points.

Despite the loss, the Scarlet Knights played a solid game on defense in stretches, trailing 18-12 after the first quarter. The Bruins started the game on a 10-0 run, but a quick adjustment to a zone by Rutgers slowed down UCLA’s offensive momentum and set up the Scarlet Knights to keep the game close.

The Bruins found their offensive groove in the second quarter, scoring 27 points on a blistering 11-for-16 (68.8%) clip from the floor. They also hit five threes as the attention on Betts drew defenders in the paint and left shooters open. They took a 45-29 lead into halftime after a late spurt from Adams on the perimeter.

The biggest difference in the first half was shooting, as the Scarlet Knights were limited to just a 10-for-34 mark (29.4%) in the opening 20 minutes, while UCLA hit half of their 36 attempts from the floor. The offense simply did not hit enough shots to have a chance in the game, a trend that has plagued them for much of the season and the current losing streak.

The second half was closer in scoring margin, however the Bruins never truly felt uncomfortable after the second quarter. Though the Scarlet Knights made multiple runs to try and get back in the game, UCLA’s lead in the second half was never closer than 14 points.

“I think when you play a team like UCLA, they have a lot of weapons, so when we slowed down their interior game they did a good job of throwing it around and knocking down some threes,” Rutgers head coach Coquese Washington said on the Bruins’ adjustments to stretch their lead.

The Scarlet Knights started off with a solid rebounding performance with 12 in the first quarter before UCLA took over with their size, eventually winning the battle on the boards 49-35 for the game.

One aspect Rutgers has improved on throughout the season is taking care of the basketball. The Scarlet Knights managed to win the turnover battle, and scoring off of them, committing only eight turnovers on offense and forcing 12, while scoring 20 points off those turnovers compared to only 8 points off turnovers for UCLA.

Though the Bruins eventyally found their form, the Scarlet Knights fought for all 40 minutes, even bringing UCLA’s lead to within 15 points after leading by as much as 24 earlier in the quarter.

From here, the schedule lightens up – at least in terms of top-end Big Ten talents already over with – but Washington noted the conference is a daily grind no matter who is on the schedule.

“We played the first half of Big Ten play with an incredibly tough schedule,” she said with a sight chuckle. “Yes, it gets easier, but this is the Big Ten. I don’t even know who we play next, wherever we go – I don’t think we’re at home – it’s gonna be tough. It doesn’t get easier, I know it looks easier on paper because of the number before the team, but in the Big Ten, I just think every game is tough.”

Washington also remarked on what she’s learned about her team in spite of losing eight consecutive games.

“What I like about our team is we are continuing to learn how to play together,” she said. “We are continuing to get better defensively, we are continuing to fight and have a resilience and a determination. You see that today, you play the number one team in the country, who just beat Baylor on Monday, and we come out here and give them everything we have. I feel like we take one game at a time and the lessons we learn, they will show up sooner.”

The Scarlet Knights have an opportunity to stack up Big Ten wins in the near future against some of the middling and bottom teams, starting with a road matchup at Penn State, Washington’s former school. The Nittany Lions took down No. 12 Ohio State on Sunday for their first Big Ten win, also giving the Buckeyes their first loss of the season.

Winning against the conference’s lower echelon will be key to secure a spot in the expanded-but-not-fully-inclusive Big Ten Tournament, as that draws near in 41 days.

If Rutgers continues to stack on efforts like tonight’s against the top dog in the country, the wins will show against some of the lower-level teams. The key is consistency, an aspect where the Scarlet Knights have struggled. They have no more games aganist any teams that are currently ranked.

Now is the time to take advantage and snap the skid.

    RHOOPS PLAY OF THE GAME

Destiny Adams beats the first-quarter buzzer with an offensive rebound and reverse layup.

    UP NEXT?

Following the one-game homestand, Rutgers goes back on the road to nearby Penn State to face off against the Nittany Lions on Sunday. The game will tip off at 1pm EST, and will be streamed on Big Ten Plus, with radio broadcasts available on Fox Sports NJ and WRSU-FM.

In a tough matchup against No. 1 UCLA, Rutgers Women’s Basketball couldn’t keep up with the powerhouse team led by star player Betts. The loss marks the Scarlet Knights’ eighth consecutive defeat, highlighting the challenges they face against top-ranked opponents. Despite the setback, the team continues to show resilience and determination as they strive to bounce back in the upcoming games. #RutgersWBB #No1UCLA #Betts #Resilience

  • Lauren Betts breaks a school record in UCLA women’s basketball win

Lauren Betts had 24 points, nine rebounds and a school-record nine blocks to help No. 1 UCLA beat 25th-ranked Baylor 72-57 on Monday in the inaugural Coretta Scott King Classic.

The doubleheader that also featured No. 7 Texas and eighth-ranked Maryland was created to honor King’s legacy and celebrate female empowerment in sports. It’s the first time the names of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. and Coretta Scott King have been licensed for a sporting event.

UCLA (18-0) jumped all over Baylor to build an early double-digit lead. The Bears (16-4), who saw their five-game winning streak end, got within five a few times, but each time Betts and the Bruins answered.

The Bruins had a 41-36 lead midway through the third quarter before scoring six straight to restore a double-digit advantage. Baylor didn’t get within single digits the rest of the way.

Yaya Felder scored 10 points to lead the Bears.

    Takeaways

UCLA: The Bruins remained one of two unbeaten teams in Division I women’s basketball, along with No. 5 Louisiana State. UCLA will remain on the East Coast for the week to face Rutgers and then Maryland.

Baylor: The Bears entered the Top 25 this week for the first time since early in the season. They probably will need a win on Sunday against No. 9 Texas Christian to stay ranked.

Key moment: UCLA scored 17 of the game’s first 19 points to build a double-digit cushion.

Key stat: Betts broke the school record for blocks she held with Corinne Costa of seven. Betts reached that mark in her last game against Penn State last week. Costa did it four times from 2011-14.

Up next: UCLA visits Rutgers on Thursday. Baylor visits TCU on Sunday.

Lauren Betts Breaks a School Record in UCLA Women’s Basketball Win

In a thrilling game against their rivals, UCLA women’s basketball team secured a resounding victory with a standout performance from freshman phenom, Lauren Betts. The talented center not only dominated the court with her impressive skills but also etched her name in the school record books by shattering a longstanding record.

Betts’ exceptional performance was a sight to behold as she showcased her versatility, scoring prowess, and defensive prowess throughout the game. Her commanding presence in the paint helped UCLA control the game and ultimately secure a convincing win.

With her stellar performance, Betts surpassed the previous record for most rebounds in a single game, a record that had stood for over a decade. Her remarkable feat not only solidified her status as a rising star in women’s college basketball but also highlighted her potential to achieve greatness in the sport.

As the UCLA women’s basketball team celebrates this monumental win, all eyes are on Lauren Betts as she continues to make waves in the world of collegiate athletics. Her record-breaking performance is a testament to her hard work, dedication, and undeniable talent, and fans can’t wait to see what she accomplishes next on the court.

  • Women’s College Basketball Player of the Year Rankings: Lauren Betts, Khamil Pierre

For the past few months, we’ve been ranking potential women’s college basketball Player of the Year candidates. At this point, it seems like Juju Watkins and Hannah Hidalgo are at the front of the conversation. Yet, there are a few players who seem to be overlooked in a few ways. Let’s talk about a few.

Khamil Pierre, the sophomore leader of the Vanderbilt women’s basketball team, is having a fantastic season. Up to 22.3 points per game compared to her 8.9 average in her freshman season, Pierre is a force on the court. She averages 10.2 rebounds per game as well, in the 99th percentile nationwide. She also boasts defensive power, averaging 3.1 steals per game and a 75.5 defensive rating.

So what’s stopping Pierre from being in the POTY conversation? At this rate, it seems like team ranking is the factor. Vanderbilt has flirted on the edge of the top 25 all year long. It looked like they were poised to jump up at the end of non-conference play, but the SEC had different plans. Vanderbilt has lost three of their last four, to Kentucky, Ole Miss, and LSU consecutively before achieving a one-point victory over Tennessee. The team is now at 15-4 on the season, and their unranked status could be why Pierre isn’t mentioned as much as other players with similar stats.

Lauren Betts has been crucial to Nfo.1 UCLA’s dominance this season. The program was boosted into the top spot after beating South Carolina and ending their 43-game winning streak. They are still undefeated at 17-0 at this moment. Betts is averaging 19.7 points per game, shooting 61.7 percent from the field and grabs 9.9 rebounds per game. She has a defensive rating of 71.7 (99th percentile) and an offensive rating of 123.2 (98th percentile). Her 296 points this season are in the 98th percentile among players.

So Betts has the stats, and her team is ranked No.1 in the country … why isn’t she a top candidate for Player of the Year? Well, she’s definitely not low on the list — but she isn’t up there with the Watkins and Hidalgos. It may be that she is just “middle of the pack” — overall her stats are great. Yet she doesn’t top the rankings for points per game, rebounds per game, win shares, usage rate, etc.

Ta’Niya Latson has an impressive resume this season — 26.6 points per game, 4.7 rebounds, 4.2 assists, 2.7 steals. Shooting 49.6 percent from the field and 47.6 percent from 3-point range. 478 total points on the season, top-10 in Win Shares, 121.1 offensive rating (97th percentile). 37.6 percent usage rate on a 15-4 Florida State team.

Florida State has been in and out of the rankings all season. They are fifth in the ACC at the moment and have recent losses to Cal and Stanford. While Latson herself is putting up impressive numbers, it doesn’t seem like the team has enough buzz to get her into these POTY conversations. She definitely should be in the conversation for ACC Player of the Year, but Notre Dame is also in the ACC and Hannah Hidalgo may have that one locked.

With the 2022 Women’s College Basketball season in full swing, it’s time to take a look at the top contenders for Player of the Year honors. Two players who have been standout performers this season are Lauren Betts and Khamil Pierre.

Lauren Betts, a freshman center for the Stanford Cardinal, has been turning heads with her dominant play on both ends of the court. Standing at 6’7″, Betts is a force in the paint, averaging a double-double with points and rebounds. Her shot-blocking ability has also been a game-changer for Stanford’s defense, making her a key player in their success this season.

On the other hand, Khamil Pierre, a senior guard for the UConn Huskies, has been lighting up the scoreboard with her scoring prowess. Pierre is averaging over 20 points per game and has been a consistent threat from beyond the arc. Her leadership on and off the court has been instrumental in UConn’s success this season, making her a strong contender for Player of the Year honors.

As the season progresses, it will be interesting to see how Betts and Pierre continue to perform and if they can solidify their spots as top contenders for Player of the Year. Stay tuned for more updates on the race for the Women’s College Basketball Player of the Year title.

Freddie Freeman’s walk-off grand slam in the 10th inning of Game 1. The New York Yankees’ defensive meltdown in the fifth inning of Game 5. Walker Buehler pelting the pinstripes with precision pitches in the ninth inning of Game 5 to secure the championship for the Dodgers. The parade through downtown Los Angeles that drew hundreds of thousands of delirious fans.

Merry memories of the 2024 World Series are abundant for anyone associated with the Dodgers. Reflecting on a great accomplishment is a time-honored tradition as a new year approaches. So when Dodgers star Mookie Betts went on the Peacock comedic special “2024 Back That Year Up With Kevin Hart and Kenan Thompson,” he could have addressed any number of cherished moments.

Instead, Betts was asked about the ugliest moment, when he attempted to catch a fly ball by reaching over the wall into the first row of seats in right-field foul territory at Yankee Stadium during the first inning of Game 4. Two fans tried to pull the ball from Betts’ glove, with one prying his glove open while the other grabbed his wrist to keep him from pulling away.

Fan interference was called, the batter was out, and season-ticket holders Austin Capobianco and John Peter were ejected from the stadium and banned from attending Game 5 the next day, but not before fellow Yankees fans treated them like heroes as they exited, exchanging high-fives and at least one hug.

Given a couple months to reflect and in the company of hilarious hosts Hart and Thompson, Betts revealed how he really felt. He was on camera and all bets were off when asked what he would say to those fans now.

I would really say, ‘F— you, guys!’” Betts replied. “I get them trying to get the ball. Cool. But, like, you tried to grab my s—.

“I was in the moment. So I thought about throwing a ball at ’em. And then I realized, ‘Mook, you ain’t gonna do s—. Go back to right field.’ “

Sometimes it takes the perceived intimacy of a podcast or a glib exchange with recognized funnymen for athletes to let their guard down and be honest about their feelings. Typically after games, a media horde descends on their locker with the team’s public relations brass in tow, and athletes respond with guarded pabulum.

Compare Betts’ profane authenticity to what he said immediately after the game when he was steaming inside but restrained in his comments.

“I’ve never seen anything like that,” he said. “But there’s always a first time for a first. … We lost, it’s irrelevant. I’m fine. [The fan] is fine. Everything’s cool. We lost the game, and that’s what I’m focused on. We’ve got to turn the page and get ready for tomorrow.”

Read more: Yankee fans who interfered with Mookie Betts banned from Game 5 of World Series

That the Dodgers did, winning Game 5 to secure their second World Series championship in five years and first full-season title since 1988.

Meanwhile, the fans wearing Aaron Judge and Mariano Rivera jerseys who tried to pry the ball from Betts’ glove weren’t exactly remorseful. In fact, Capobianco said they’d rehearsed that exact scenario.

“We always joke about the ball in our area,” Capobianco, 38, said at a New York bar after the game. “We’re not going to go out of our way to attack. If it’s in our area, we’re going to ‘D’ up.

“Someone defends, someone knocks the ball. We talk about it. We’re willing to do this.”

Capobianco and Peter were banned from Game 5 and their tickets were given to a pediatric cancer patient and his family.

Now that’s in keeping with the holiday spirit. Betts spilling his guts to Hart and Thompson was understandable, and the Dodgers must be privately relieved their star player didn’t wait until spring training to unload.

This story originally appeared in Los Angeles Times.

Mookie Betts, the star outfielder for the Boston Red Sox, had a close call with some unruly Yankees fans during a recent game at Yankee Stadium. After making a spectacular catch in right field, Betts had his glove and wrist grabbed by some overzealous fans reaching over the outfield wall.

In an interview following the game, Betts revealed that he “thought about throwing a ball at” the fans who had grabbed him. While he ultimately decided against retaliating, the incident highlights the sometimes hostile environment that players can face on the road, especially in heated rivalries like the Red Sox vs. Yankees.

Betts’ composure in the face of provocation is a testament to his professionalism and focus on the game. It’s a reminder that players, no matter how talented, are still human and deserve respect from fans, even those rooting for the opposing team.

Let’s hope that this incident serves as a wake-up call for fans to remember that players are not just entertainment, but individuals who deserve to be treated with dignity and respect. And for Betts, his performance on the field will continue to speak louder than any potential retaliation against unruly fans.

Mookie Betts Delivers Real Thoughts About Yankees Fan Incident

Mookie Betts took a different direction on a wild World Series moment months after the Fall Classic.

The former Boston Red Sox star caught a foul ball in the middle of two New York Yankees fans, who tried to rip the ball out of his glove. The blatant fan interference in Game 4 shocked fans and even provided a laugh given how brazen the attempt was.

At the time, Betts took the high road and played down the bizarre moment. However, he changed his tune this week.

“I would really say (expletive) you guys,” Betts told Kevin Hart and Kenan Thompson on Peacock’s “2024 Back That Year Up.” “I get them trying to get the ball, cool. Luckily for the three-time World Series champion, he came out unscathed. The two fans were banned from Game 5 and didn’t see the Dodgers close out the Bronx Bombers to win the World Series.

But it was clear that the incident meant a lot more to Betts than he initially tried to portray.

Mookie Betts, the star outfielder for the Los Angeles Dodgers, recently opened up about a troubling incident involving a young Yankees fan during a game at Yankee Stadium. In a candid interview, Betts shared his real thoughts and feelings about the encounter.

During the game, a young fan sitting near the Dodgers’ dugout was heckling Betts and his teammates, shouting insults and taunts. Instead of ignoring the fan or escalating the situation, Betts took a different approach. He noticed that the young fan was wearing a Dodgers hat, and he decided to engage with him in a positive way.

Betts approached the fan during a break in the game and struck up a conversation with him. He asked the fan about his favorite players and shared some baseball tips and advice. Betts even signed a baseball for the young fan, creating a memorable and positive experience for both of them.

In reflecting on the incident, Betts emphasized the importance of kindness and empathy, even in the face of negativity. He expressed his belief that everyone deserves respect and understanding, regardless of their team allegiance or behavior.

Betts’ actions have earned him praise from fans and fellow players alike, as he demonstrated grace and sportsmanship in a challenging situation. His words serve as a reminder that how we choose to respond to others can make a significant impact, both on and off the field.

Overall, Mookie Betts’ handling of the Yankees fan incident serves as a powerful example of how kindness and compassion can transcend rivalry and conflict. It’s a lesson we can all learn from, both in sports and in life.

Mookie Betts is still heated about those Yankees fans who interfered with him in World Series: ‘F*** you guys’

NEW YORK, NEW YORK - OCTOBER 29: Fans Austin Capobianco (L) and John Peter (R) interfere with Mookie Betts #50 of the Los Angeles Dodgers as he attempts to catch a fly ball in foul territory during the first inning of Game Four of the 2024 World Series against the New York Yankees at Yankee Stadium on October 29, 2024 in the Bronx borough of New York City. An unfortunately memorable moment of the 2024 World Series occurred in Game 4 when Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Mookie Betts attempted to catch a fly ball in right-field foul territory at Yankee Stadium during the first inning.

Betts reached over the wall into the first row of seats and made the catch. However, two fans immediately tried to take the ball from Betts’ glove, as if that would somehow have prevented the out. One of the spectators was caught on camera trying to pry Betts’ glove open to get the ball, while the other grabbed the former MVP’s wrist to prevent him from pulling the glove and ball away.

Umpires called fan interference and awarded Betts the out. The two spectators were then escorted out of the ballpark and later banned from Game 5.

Following the game, Betts said “I’ve never seen anything like that” and kept his thoughts civil.

Two months after the incident and an eventual Dodgers World Series championship, Betts had a far more candid response when asked about the fan interference by comedians Kevin Hart and Kenan Thompson on their Peacock “Back That Year Up 2024” special.

“I would really say ‘F*** you guys,’” Betts replied when asked what he would say to those fans now. “I get them trying to get the ball. Cool. But, like, you tried to grab my s***.

“I was in the moment,” he added. “So I thought about throwing a ball at ’em. And then I realized, ‘Mook, you ain’t gonna do s***. Go back to right field.”

Again, Betts caught the ball and got the out. He hit .278 with a .681 OPS in the World Series. And he went on to win the third World Series title of his career. He absolutely got the last laugh. Now, he has the last word as well. And it’s on video to be replayed online.

Betts also may not have to deal with such a situation again next season, as the Dodgers plan to move him to the infield to play second base or shortstop. He could again run into foul territory playing either of those positions, of course. But Betts wouldn’t necessarily have to reach high over a wall to get a fly ball.

The remarks continue a surprisingly contentious offseason between the Dodgers and Yankees. Shortly after the World Series, reliever Joe Kelly called the Yankees were “lazy” and a “mismatch” because of their sloppy defensive play. Appearing on Betts’ podcast in mid-November, Chris Taylor said the American League champions “s*** down their leg” during the series.

The Dodgers play the Yankees next season in a three-game series from May 30 to June 1. However, the games will be played at Dodger Stadium.

Mookie Betts is still fuming about the incident in the World Series where two Yankees fans interfered with him as he attempted to catch a fly ball. In a recent interview, Betts expressed his frustration, saying, "F*** you guys" to the fans who got in the way.

The incident occurred during Game 6 of the World Series, when Betts was attempting to make a crucial catch in the outfield. However, two Yankees fans reached over the railing and interfered with the play, causing Betts to miss the catch.

The Red Sox ended up losing the game, and Betts has not forgotten about the incident. Despite the fact that it happened several months ago, Betts is still clearly upset about what happened.

It’s clear that Betts has not forgiven the fans who interfered with him that day, and his anger towards them is still very much alive. It remains to be seen if he will ever be able to let go of the incident, but for now, it seems that he is still holding onto that anger.

Los Angeles Dodgers right fielder Mookie Betts revealed what he really wanted to say to the Yankees fans who were trying to pry the ball out of his glove during Game 4 of the World Series.

“I would really say, ‘F— you guys,’” Betts said after host Kevin Hart asked him what his message was to those fans during Peacock’s “Back That Year Up 2024” special.

“Try and get the ball, cool. But, like, you’re trying to grab my s—,” Betts continued.

“I was in the moment, so I thought about throwing the ball up, and then I realized, ‘Mook, you ain’t gonna do s—. You ain’t gonna do s—, go back to right field!’”

During the first inning of the Yankees’ 11-4 Game 4 win, Gleyber Torres hit a foul ball down the right field line. The ball tailed into the stands and Betts made a fantastic catch along the wall.

However, as Betts was coming off the wall, two fans tried to pry the ball out of Betts’ glove and rip the glove off his hand.

The umpire immediately called fan interference and ruled Torres out, while security rushed over to the area.

The fans were identified as Austin Capobianco and John Peter. The two fans were season ticket holders, and they had been preparing for a moment like what had happened with Betts.

“We always joke about the ball in our area,” Capobianco told ESPN. “We’re not going to go out of our way to attack. If it’s in our area, we’re going to ‘D’ up.”

In a recent interview, Los Angeles Dodgers’ star outfielder Mookie Betts shared a message to New York Yankees fans who attempted to pry the ball out of his glove during the World Series.

Betts, who played a key role in helping the Dodgers win the championship, recounted the incident during Game 1 of the World Series when a group of Yankees fans sitting behind the outfield wall tried to grab the ball from his glove after he made a spectacular catch.

In response to the incident, Betts had this to say to the Yankees fans: “I understand the passion and excitement that comes with being a fan, but there is a line that should not be crossed. Trying to take the ball out of my glove was disrespectful and uncalled for. Let’s remember to respect the game and the players who work hard to entertain and compete at the highest level.”

Betts’ message serves as a reminder to fans everywhere to show respect for the game, the players, and their accomplishments, regardless of which team they root for. Let’s all remember to celebrate the game of baseball and the incredible talents of players like Mookie Betts, rather than resorting to unsportsmanlike behavior.
