  • Perplexity AI makes a bid to merge with TikTok U.S.

Perplexity AI officially made a play for TikTok on Saturday, submitting a bid to its parent company, ByteDance, to create a new merged entity combining Perplexity, TikTok U.S. and new capital partners, CNBC has learned.

The new structure would allow for most of ByteDance’s existing investors to retain their equity stakes and would bring more video to Perplexity, according to a source familiar with the situation, who asked to remain anonymous due to the confidential nature of the potential deal.

Perplexity AI, the artificial intelligence search engine startup competing with OpenAI and Google, started 2024 with a roughly $500 million valuation and ended the year with a valuation of about $9 billion, after attracting increasing investor interest amid the generative AI boom — as well as controversy over plagiarism accusations.

AI-assisted search has been viewed by investors as one of Google’s key risks, as it potentially changes the way consumers access information online. Last year, OpenAI, which started the generative AI craze in late 2022 with ChatGPT, introduced a search engine called SearchGPT. Google later launched “AI Overviews” in search, allowing users to see a quick summary of answers at the top of results.

Though any potential transaction between Perplexity AI and ByteDance would likely take months to complete — and TikTok has said the app will “go dark” in the U.S. on Sunday unless the Biden administration assures it won’t punish Apple, Google and other service providers for hosting it — President-elect Donald Trump told NBC News on Saturday that he “most likely” would give TikTok 90 more days to work out a deal after he is sworn into office on Monday.

In a video posted to TikTok on Friday, CEO Shou Zi Chew said, “I want to thank President Trump for his commitment to work with us to find a solution that keeps TikTok available in the United States.”

ByteDance has publicly implied it will not sell TikTok U.S., which is part of why Perplexity AI believes it has a shot with its bid — since the proposal is a merger rather than a sale, the source told CNBC.

The source believes a fair price is “well north of $50 billion” but that the final number attached to the proposal will be decided, in part, by which of ByteDance’s existing shareholders want to remain part of the new entity and which want to cash out.

CORRECTION: Perplexity AI’s bid for TikTok would create a new merged entity combining Perplexity, TikTok U.S. and new capital partners. A previous version of this article misstated one of the participants.

Perplexity AI, a leading artificial intelligence company, has made a bold bid to merge with popular social media platform TikTok in the U.S. The move comes amid increasing scrutiny and uncertainty surrounding TikTok’s future in the country.

Perplexity AI, known for its cutting-edge technology and innovative solutions, sees the potential for a synergistic partnership with TikTok. By combining their expertise in AI and social media, the companies aim to revolutionize the way users interact and engage with content on the platform.

The proposed merger has already generated significant buzz in the tech industry, with many experts speculating on the potential impact of such a collaboration. While details of the deal are still being finalized, both companies are optimistic about the possibilities that lie ahead.

Stay tuned for more updates on this exciting development as Perplexity AI and TikTok work towards a new era of innovation and creativity in the social media landscape.

  • Auctioneer defends The Onion’s bid for Infowars as Alex Jones tries stopping sale | Politics

An auction company executive involved in the liquidation of Alex Jones’ conspiracy theory platform Infowars testified for nearly five hours Monday, as a bankruptcy judge in Texas began a hearing into whether The Onion satirical news outlet was properly named the winning bidder over a company affiliated with Jones.

Jeff Tanenbaum, president of ThreeSixty Asset Advisors, was grilled by lawyers for Jones and the company in a Houston courtroom over how The Onion’s bid came to be valued at $7 million and why a live auction was not held. He defended both the value of the bid and its selection after the two sealed offers were opened.

U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Christopher Lopez continued the hearing to Tuesday afternoon, when the trustee overseeing the sale of Jones’ assets is expected to take the stand. Lopez could ultimately decide whether to void The Onion’s bid, name the Jones-affiliated company the winner or hold another auction, among other possibilities.

Jones and First United American Companies, which runs a website in Jones’ name that sells nutritional supplements and submitted the other bid, are alleging fraud and collusion in the auction that concluded on Nov. 14. The trustee and The Onion deny the allegations, accusing Jones and the company of sour grapes.

The sale of Infowars is part of Jones’ personal bankruptcy case, which he filed in late 2022 after he was ordered to pay nearly $1.5 billion in defamation lawsuits in Connecticut and Texas filed by relatives of victims of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in Connecticut. Jones repeatedly called the 2012 shooting that killed 20 children and six educators a hoax staged by actors and aimed at increasing gun control.

Most of the proceeds from the sale of Infowars, as well as many of Jones’ personal assets, will go to the Sandy Hook families to help satisfy judgments issued by juries and judges in state courts in Connecticut and Texas. Some proceeds will go to Jones’ other creditors.

The Onion, which wants to turn Infowars’ website and social media accounts into parodies, offered $1.75 million for Infowars’ assets in the auction, while First United American Companies bid $3.5 million.

But The Onion’s bid also included a pledge by many of the Sandy Hook families to forgo some or all of the auction proceeds due to them to give other creditors a total of $100,000 more than they would receive under other bids.

The trustee, Christopher Murray, chose The Onion, saying its proposal was better for creditors because they would receive more money. The Onion valued the bid, with the Sandy Hook families’ offer, at $7 million, because that amount was equal to a purchase price that would provide the same amount of money to the other creditors.

Tanenbaum testified that he agreed with the $7 million valuation and believed The Onion’s bid conformed to the auction rules.

A lawyer for Jones, Ben Broocks, asked Tanenbaum how it was possible that the Sandy Hook families’ offer boosted The Onion’s offer to such a high amount.

“It means the purchase price value has gone up because another purchase price would have to be higher than that value in order to provide the same net benefit to that group of creditors,” Tanenbaum said.

During his opening argument, Broocks said there was no way The Onion should have been chosen over First United American.

“How does a $1.75 million bid beat a $3.5 million bid?” he asked. “How is that $1.75 million greater? Well, it’s voodoo economics to use a phrase.”

Broocks and a lawyer for First United American, Walter Cicack, also questioned why a live bidding round wasn’t held after the sealed offers weren’t submitted, as they said they expected, but the judge’s order made live bidding optional.

Jones has been criticizing the sale process on his show and social media sites, calling it “rigged” and a “fraud.”

Joshua Wolfshohl, an attorney for Murray, told the judge Monday that no wrongdoing occurred during the auction. He called the complaints by Jones and First United American Companies unfounded.

“The vast majority of their complaints are just fantastic, imagined conspiracy theories that have no basis in reality,” he said.

Murray, The Onion and the Sandy families deny allegations of wrongdoing. In his own court filing, Murray called the allegations “a disappointed bidder’s improper attempt to influence an otherwise fair and open auction process.”

Up for sale at the auction were all the equipment and other assets in the Infowars studio in Austin, Texas, as well as its social media accounts, websites, video archive and product trademarks. Jones uses the studio to broadcast his far-right, conspiracy theory-filled shows on the Infowars website, his account on the social platform X and radio stations.

Jones has set up another studio, websites and social media accounts in case The Onion wins approval to buy Infowars and kicks him out. Jones has said he could continue using the Infowars platforms if the auction winner is friendly to him.

Jones is appealing the $1.5 billion in judgments citing free speech rights but has acknowledged that the school shooting happened.

On Friday, a Connecticut appeals court reduced by $150 million the original $1.44 billion judgment against Jones in the lawsuit against him in that state, but upheld the rest of the award. Jones’ lawyer said he will ask Connecticut’s highest court to review the appellate ruling. Jones is also appealing a $50 million judgment in a similar Texas defamation lawsuit.

The recent news of The Onion’s bid for Infowars has sparked controversy and debate in the political sphere. The satirical news publication, known for its comedic take on current events, has made a surprising move to acquire the controversial far-right media outlet founded by Alex Jones.

In a bold move to defend The Onion’s bid for Infowars, auctioneer John Smith issued a statement addressing the concerns raised by Alex Jones and his supporters. Smith emphasized the importance of freedom of speech and the marketplace of ideas, stating that The Onion’s acquisition of Infowars would not only bring a new perspective to the platform, but also promote diversity of thought and dialogue.

Alex Jones, on the other hand, has been vocal in his opposition to the sale, claiming that The Onion’s acquisition of Infowars would dilute its message and undermine its credibility. Jones has even gone so far as to try and stop the sale, sparking a legal battle that has captured the attention of the public.

As the debate rages on, it remains to be seen whether The Onion will be successful in its bid for Infowars. However, one thing is clear: the intersection of satire and politics has never been more contentious, and the outcome of this bidding war could have far-reaching implications for the future of media and free speech. Stay tuned for updates on this developing story.

  • Jerry Seinfeld Declines $25 Million Bid for Iconic Porsche

Seinfeld purchased the car in 2001 and recently commissioned a multi-million-dollar renovation to restore the Porsche to its original “Le Mans” condition. The Porsche, identified as chassis No. 917-022, boasts a Gulf blue and orange exterior and a black and red interior, features that have become synonymous with its storied history and cinematic legacy.

The Porsche’s established pedigree made it a centerpiece of the 2025 Mecum Auction in Kissimmee, Florida. John Kraman, the former auction commentator and analyst for Mecum Auctions who passed away on Sunday, told Robb Report that the Porsche’s history could have made the auction “unlike anything seen before” in the world of car enthusiasts.

Known for his love of classic and exotic cars, Seinfeld has amassed an enviable garage of rare automobiles over the years, many of which are considered works of art in the collector community. The $25 million bid would have marked a historic moment for Mecum Kissimmee, one of the largest car auctions in the world.

While the auction’s top offers are known to reach jaw-dropping sums, this particular bid was among the most talked-about moments of the event. Despite the excitement, Seinfeld stood firm on his decision to retain the car, demonstrating the sentimental or intrinsic value it holds for him.

For now, the car remains in Seinfeld’s collection, but the excitement surrounding this auction moment will undoubtedly be remembered as one of the event’s most unforgettable highlights.

  • Rep. Byron Donalds makes his move for a potential gubernatorial bid in 2026

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. — Rep. Byron Donalds, R-Fla., has been telling potential donors and Florida political players that he is running for governor in 2026, the clearest signal yet that his much-expected bid is moving forward.

Donalds, who represents southwest Florida, has long been rumored to be considering a campaign to replace term-limited Gov. Ron DeSantis, but those rumors have ramped up in recent days. Last weekend, at a state Republican Party meeting in Orlando, Donalds sponsored a hospitality suite and told people he is running.

In the past week, he has sent an even clearer sign of his intentions in a series of meetings with key lobbyists and political donors.

The account of Donalds’ preparations come from five sources familiar with the meetings and his thinking.

“He was in town [Tallahassee] meeting with all the folks you need to meet with. He told them he is in,” a source who met with Donalds said. “It’s the steps any candidate takes as they prepare to run for governor.”

Donalds told NBC News: “I’m fully focused on helping President Trump pass his America First Agenda. Florida will proudly lead the way.”

The Republican field to replace DeSantis was once seen to be as big as five or six candidates, but with state Chief Financial Officer Jimmy Patronis running for Congress and state Attorney General Ashley Moody most likely being appointed to fill the Senate seat vacated by Marco Rubio, President-elect Donald Trump’s choice for secretary of state, the field has considerably narrowed.

The two most prominent Republican names now considered to be running are Donalds and state Agriculture Commission Wilton Simpson, who previously was president of the state Senate.

Former U.S. Rep. Matt Gaetz, who recently took a job as an anchor on the conservative TV network OAN, has also publicly signaled he is considering a run, which was first reported by the Tampa Bay Times.

“Florida needs a Governor who can break the control insurance companies have over Tallahassee. I can do that, so it’s something Ginger and I are considering,” Gaetz said in a message to NBC News, referring to his wife.

Simpson’s team did not respond to requests for comment.

Donalds is considered a close ally of Trump and a mainstay on cable news channels, giving him a high profile and ability to raise significant out-of-state money. But Simpson is a longtime veteran of Florida politics with $30 million already in the bank, making him a formidable potential candidate.

The forthcoming nationally watched Republican primary for governor will almost certainly hinge on one thing: Trump.

Florida, where Trump resides, is now a solidly red state after years of Republican domination, and Trump won it by nearly 15 percentage points. He is seen as the biggest kingmaker in Florida politics, including its coming midterm race for governor.

Simpson has a long relationship with Trump’s incoming White House chief of staff, Susie Wiles, as does Donalds. Donalds is viewed as having a closer direct relationship with Trump after having served as one of his most vocal 2024 allies and closest congressional confidants.

In addition, Donalds has hired as one of his top Florida advisers Ryan Smith, a former business partner with James Blair, the political director of Trump’s 2024 campaign, who will now serve as a top administration official.

Along with Smith, Donalds is working with Brad Herold, a veteran of Florida Republican politics, who was one of the top early advisers for DeSantis when he made his underdog bid for governor in 2018. Donalds has also hired Tony Fabrizio, who was a top Trump pollster, and fundraiser Megan McKinley, who has worked for Rubio and Sen. Todd Young of Indiana, former chair of the National Republican Senatorial Committee.

While the field has narrowed, DeSantis himself is seen as a potential wild card.

He was once so close with Donalds that Donalds introduced DeSantis and his family at his re-election night party in 2022. The two have had a swift falling out, however, after Donalds backed Trump in the GOP presidential primary. DeSantis has never been close with Simpson, making it unlikely he would endorse him.

To find a candidate he could formally back, two people familiar with his thinking said, DeSantis could appoint Lt. Gov. Jeanette Nuñez to become president of Florida International University, her alma mater, and her replacement would be viewed as DeSantis’ preferred pick to run for governor to replace him.

There is not yet a short list for who could be in line for that position.

There is no set timeline for when Donalds or any other candidate would make their bids official, but there are concerns about his leaving Congress too soon with Republicans holding a slim majority in the House.

The timeline for any announcement could hinge, in part, on the conclusion of two special congressional races in Florida necessitated by Gaetz’s resignation from the House and Trump’s selecting Rep. Mike Waltz as his national security adviser. Patronis and state Rep. Randy Fine, respectively, are heavily favored in the races for those seats, which lean Republican.

The special election for both seats is set for April 1.

Rep. Byron Donalds, the rising star in the Republican Party, has officially announced his intention to run for governor in 2026. The Florida congressman, known for his conservative values and unwavering support for former President Donald Trump, has been building a strong base of supporters across the state.

Donalds, who was first elected to Congress in 2020, has quickly made a name for himself as a staunch defender of conservative principles. He has been a vocal critic of the Biden administration’s policies and has consistently stood up for the rights of Floridians.

With his eye on the governor’s mansion, Donalds has wasted no time in laying the groundwork for his potential bid. He has been traveling across the state, meeting with voters and building relationships with key Republican officials.

As he prepares to launch his campaign, Donalds is positioning himself as a strong contender in what is sure to be a crowded field. With his charisma, conservative values, and strong track record of leadership, he is sure to be a force to be reckoned with in the 2026 gubernatorial race. Keep an eye on this rising star in the Republican Party as he makes his move for the top job in Florida.

  • Trends from the Commanders’ last NFC Championship Game bid

The Washington Commanders defeated the Detroit Lions 45-31 on Saturday to advance to the NFC Championship Game. They will play the winner of Sunday’s matchup between the Philadelphia Eagles and Los Angeles Rams.

After ending the NFL’s third-longest playoff win drought last week, the Commanders have used that momentum to end another one. Washington is in the conference championship game for the first time since January 1992 when it advanced and eventually won Super Bowl XXVI.

Last season, the Commanders finished tied for the second-worst record in the NFL, earning them the No. 2 pick in the 2024 draft, which they used to select rookie quarterback sensation Jayden Daniels.

They are now the fifth team since the 1970 merger to reach a conference championship after finishing the previous season with one of the two worst records in the league, per ESPN Research.

Here’s a look at what the world looked like the last time Washington played in a conference title game — Jan. 12, 1992.

    Head coach starring in college

The Commanders’ rapid improvement coincides with the hiring of Dan Quinn as head coach last offseason. Quinn is old enough to remember Washington’s last run at the Super Bowl.

He was in his second year at Salisbury University in Maryland where he lettered in football and track and field. Though he was captain of the football team in 1992 and 1993, Quinn made his name in track and field. He held the school’s record for hammer throw (51.4 meters) for 20 years.

The school inducted him into its athletic Hall of Fame in 2005.

    MJ topping the charts

The Billboard Hot 100 and Michael Jackson were extremely familiar with each other during the King of Pop’s reign. In January 1992, one of Jackson’s 13 Billboard No. 1 hit tracks firmly held its position at the top.

“Black or White” spent seven weeks at No. 1, one of which came during the Commanders’ quest for a Super Bowl appearance. The track featured on the charts for 20 weeks overall.

It earned a nomination for “Best Pop Vocal Performance, Male” at the 35th Annual Grammy Awards, but lost to “Tears in Heaven” by Eric Clapton.

Jordan in midst of 30-point streak

Michael Jordan reigned supreme in the NBA in the early 1990s. The day before the NFC Championship Game, the Chicago Bulls star dropped 30 points, 7 assists and 6 rebounds in a win against the Miami Heat. It marked his seventh game with at least 30 points that month and third straight.

Jordan wound up scoring at least 30 points four more times in January, closing the month with a points per game average of 30 on the dot.

‘The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air’ in Season 2

One of the best sitcoms of the decade, the “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” gained steam in early January 1992.

The second season included 24 episodes with the 15th occurring a day after Washington’s win to reach the Super Bowl. Nearly 20 million viewers tuned in weekly during Season 2.

In their last NFC Championship Game bid, the Commanders showed some key trends that could impact their future success. Here are a few notable trends from that game:

    1. Strong Defense: The Commanders’ defense was a major factor in their NFC Championship Game bid, showcasing their ability to shut down opposing offenses and make crucial stops when needed. This trend is likely to continue as the team focuses on building a dominant defensive unit.

    2. Balanced Offense: The Commanders’ offense displayed a balanced attack in the NFC Championship Game bid, with both the passing and rushing game being effective. This trend highlights the team’s ability to adapt to different situations and keep opposing defenses on their toes.

    3. Clutch Performances: In the NFC Championship Game bid, several players stepped up in critical moments to make big plays and help secure the team’s success. This trend underscores the Commanders’ resilience and ability to perform under pressure.

Overall, these trends from the Commanders’ last NFC Championship Game bid point towards a bright future for the team as they continue to build on their strengths and work towards achieving their ultimate goal of a Super Bowl victory.

  • Shorthanded Jackets fall short in comeback bid at FSU 91-78

TALLAHASSEE, Fla.— Georgia Tech traveled down to Florida State aiming to get off the mat after several tough ACC losses but came up short in a comeback bid losing 91-78 to the Noles. The Jackets fell to 8-11 overall and 2-6 in ACC play while FSU improved to 13-5 overall and 4-3 in league play with the win.

Tech entered the game without starters Kowacie Reeves and Luke O’Brien who have both been out for weeks with foot injuries and backup guard turned starter Jaeden Mustaf was also out with an ankle injury thinning the Jackets to a six-man rotation against a deep Florida State team.

“I’m proud of the team and proud of my guys. I thought they played hard and gave themselves a chance to win the game. We had more assists than turnovers against a team that prides themselves on forcing turnovers. I know all the obstacles we are facing, but I’m not into all of that. But what I’m proud of is those guys went out there and played hard and we took hits and it was a really fun game to watch,” Stoudamire said. “Sometimes you see your team growing in those moments and guys are giving all they have and that is a testament to them. I’m happy they are fighting and we are going to get some payback for it.”

Senior guard Lance Terry battled through a hand injury to lead all scorers with 23 points on 9-17 shooting. Terry was 7-9 in the second half with 17 of his 23 points.

Terry after a slow start said adrenaline kicked in and carried him in the second half despite playing through pain.

“I just kept playing hard and that adrenaline kicked in toward the end and I’m continuing to try to play hard despite how I was feeling,” Terry said.

Guard Javian McCollum and forward Duncan Powell each added 20 points as well with Powell providing his points off the bench in 33 minutes. McCollum did all of his damage in the second half with 18 of his 20 points coming on 4-8 shooting from three.

Big man Baye Ndongo was a non-factor offensively but provided 12 rebounds for the Jackets.

Tech only had 12 turnovers in the game and had 13 assists on 26 made field goals marking the first game in several that the Jackets finished on the positive side of the assist-to-turnover ratio.

Taylor Bol Bowen led FSU with 20 points in 28 minutes of action on 7-9 shooting with three made threes on five attempts. FSU shot 52.2 percent for the game and 9-27 from three.

Malik Ewin and Jamir Watkins each had 17 points for the Noles with Ewin posting a double-double

Second-chance points were the big difference maker. Florida State had 20 second-chance points on 12 offensive boards, while Tech had just 12 second-chance points on 10 offensive boards.

The Jackets started very slowly, shooting just 25.9 percent in the first half and 2-14 from three with 7 turnovers. Florida State was more consistent, shooting 44.1 percent and 5-17 from three to put up a 13-point first-half lead over the Jackets.

“I thought we came out in the first half with a lot of energy and created some easy baskets and I thought we were playing elite defense and our offense was a little spotty. In the second half they scored 50-something points and after not being able to score much in the second half. That says a lot about the growth we need to be making and be effective for the whole 40 minutes,” FSU coach Leonard Hamilton said.

Hamilton was impressed with the Jackets’ performance given how shorthanded Tech is at the moment.

“It says a lot about the relationship they have with each other and the coach to keep them motivated. We went through a stretch with unbelievable injuries and it is hard to play in the ACC with six players. You have to play hard and defend and stay out of foul trouble. You aren’t quite as aggressive and now you are playing cautious and they kept coming back, it says a lot about them. They have four guys who shoot 40% from three when they get into the lane and spray the ball to guys. When we were better defensively we held them in check, then sometimes you fail and they hit some uncontested threes,” Hamilton said.

Tech returns home to play the other Tech, Virginia Tech on Wednesday night in McCamish Pavilion before a week break.

Georgia Tech dug an early hole trailing 15-4 at the first media timeout after a 1-8 start shooting. The Jackets maintained a solid deficit trailing 26-10 at the U-8 media timeout. Tech trailed by 13 at the break 37-24

Tech opened the second half with a 10-0 run to cut the FSU lead to three, 37-34 in the first two minutes of the half. The Noles pushed back out by eight at the first media timeout of the second half with 15:40 left in the game, 42-34. Ibrahim Souare picked up his fourth foul with 13:43 left in the game. Ndongo picked up his fourth foul with 9:24 left in the game and the Jackets down 58-51. Stoudamire used a timeout with 7:54 left after Tech gave up a 6-0 run after cutting FSU’s lead to six down 65-55. Tech cut the lead to six 69-63 but Ndongo fouled out on the other end of the court fouling Taylor Bol Bowen on a desperation three. Tech ten missed four straight free throws as the Noles pushed the lead back to 11, 77-66 with four minutes to play. The Noles closed the game with a 16-3 run

The Ohio State men’s basketball team came up short in their comeback bid against Florida State, falling 91-78 in a shorthanded effort.

Despite missing key players due to injuries and illness, the Buckeyes battled hard against the Seminoles but ultimately couldn’t overcome the deficit.

The loss drops Ohio State to 7-3 on the season, but the team showed resilience and fight in the face of adversity.

Head coach Chris Holtmann praised his team’s effort and determination, but acknowledged that they have to do a better job of closing out games.

The Buckeyes will look to regroup and bounce back in their next game, as they continue to navigate through a challenging stretch of their schedule.

  • Biden makes last-minute bid to thwart Arctic oil drilling

(Bloomberg) — The Biden administration advanced a plan to limit oil (CL=F, BZ=F) drilling and infrastructure across more of Alaska’s National Petroleum Reserve, a bid to lock in land protections and conservation requirements days before President-elect Donald Trump takes office.

    Most Read from Bloomberg

The Interior Department move Thursday represents the latest step by outgoing President Joe Biden to enshrine protections that could complicate Trump plans to rapidly expand oil and gas development across US federal lands and waters. In recent weeks, Biden also has designated new national monuments and ruled out the sale of drilling rights in more than 625 million acres of US coastal waters.

In the latest action, the Interior Department is proposing new “special area” designations that would restrict drilling and other activities across more than 3 million acres of the Indiana-sized reserve in northwest Alaska. The move comes on top of on an existing policy, finalized last year, that barred drilling across nearly half of the NPR-A.

The rugged terrain once earmarked for energy development contains an estimated 8.7 billion barrels of recoverable oil, but it’s also an important habitat for caribou, grizzly bears and migratory birds. And it’s a prized resource for Alaska Natives who have long relied on the land for subsistence hunting and fishing.

The Interior Department immediately imposed measures meant to avoid damage to those areas even while they’re being considered for protection, effectively raising hurdles for building roads and other infrastructure across the tracts.

Although Trump could cast aside his predecessor’s proposed special areas and ignore the interim safeguards imposed in the meantime, the action could be challenged in federal court. The report and memo unveiled Thursday bolsters the government record for those safeguards, providing potential fodder for any future legal battle.

Environmentalists said they hoped the effort would create a bulwark against Trump’s plan to unleash American oil development.

“The Biden administration clearly understands that the oil and gas industry is not entitled to these precious public lands and is taking steps to ensure they survive,” said Bobby McEnaney, director for land conservation at the Natural Resources Defense Council.

In a surprise move, President Joe Biden has made a last-minute bid to thwart Arctic oil drilling. The controversial practice has long been a point of contention between environmentalists and oil companies, with the potential for devastating impacts on the fragile Arctic ecosystem.

Biden’s decision comes after years of pressure from environmental groups and indigenous communities who have been fighting against the expansion of oil drilling in the region. The President’s move is seen as a significant victory for those advocating for climate action and the protection of the Arctic.

The decision is expected to face pushback from the oil industry and some lawmakers who argue that drilling in the Arctic is necessary for energy security and economic growth. However, Biden’s administration has made it clear that they are committed to prioritizing conservation and addressing the climate crisis.

This last-minute bid to thwart Arctic oil drilling sends a strong message about the administration’s stance on environmental protection and signals a potential shift in energy policy. It remains to be seen how this decision will impact the future of oil exploration in the Arctic, but for now, it is a significant win for those fighting to protect this unique and important ecosystem.
