‘Hungry’ St. John’s tops Marquette to remain atop Big East
NEW YORK — An aggressive, hounding defense. Bully ball on the offensive end. A Hall of Fame coach walking the sideline. Chants of “Let’s go, Johnnies!” filling Madison Square Garden in the final minute of No. 12 St. John’s 70-64 win over No. 11 Marquette.
For a basketball program desperate to return to relevance — and win its first Big East regular-season championship since 1992 — it was hard to escape the feeling that Tuesday night was a turning point.
There have been false dawns for St. John’s basketball before, but this season’s Red Storm have won nine games in a row and 15 of their past 16, and they sit atop the Big East standings at 11-1.
And now they have the statement win they’ve been looking for all season.
“You guys can see it now,” St. John’s forward RJ Luis Jr. said. “We’re a very hungry group, and we’re very determined to win. We came out tonight, came out fighting, and was able to get the tough win versus a very good Marquette team.”
It was just about one year ago when coach Rick Pitino walked into the news conference following St. John’s eighth loss in 10 games, a 68-62 defeat to Seton Hall after leading by 19 points, and lamented his team’s lack of toughness and athleticism.
“If I said I was disappointed, that would be the understatement of the year,” he said last February. “Our lateral quickness and our toughness is just something I’ve never witnessed in all my years of coaching.”
Twelve months and a revamped roster later, and St. John’s has one of the elite defenses in college basketball, ranking in the top five nationally in adjusted efficiency per KenPom. The team’s effort at that end of the floor has been at the heart of its success, and that was again the case Tuesday.
Despite not shooting well from the 3-point line (3-for-16) or the free throw line (17-for-31), St. John’s held Marquette to 0.95 points per possession — the Golden Eagles’ second-worst offensive performance of the campaign.
There was no possession more evident of the Red Storm’s commitment on defense than after St. John’s took a 66-59 lead in the final two minutes. Marquette needed to come down and score quickly to cut the lead, but the Golden Eagles simply couldn’t get a look at the basket. They dribbled around for 25 seconds before Kadary Richmond blocked a 3-point attempt into the stands with 1:11 remaining.
“I thought all the guys played great defense,” Pitino said. “They help each other, they switch. This is a relentless defensive team, and you see it all the time. … This is a relentless group. A relentless group that’s totally bought into stopping every play.”
St. John’s withstood early shooting woes by attacking the offensive glass. At one point late in the first half, Marquette had made five 3s to the Red Storm’s 0. But St. John’s countered that by grabbing 11 offensive rebounds to Marquette’s 0, resulting in seven second-chance points.
“I thought they played with incredible violence,” Marquette coach Shaka Smart said. “They were just the more aggressive team for the majority of the game.”
Stingy defense and offensive rebounding have been part of the Red Storm’s identity all season, but lately the reemergence of Richmond has given them an added dimension on offense.
Richmond, the No. 1 player in the transfer portal last spring after leaving Seton Hall, hadn’t quite reached the same heights at St. John’s through the first 2½ months of the season. But he had 24 points — including the game winner — 8 rebounds and 8 assists against Providence on Saturday, and he finished with 18 points, 11 rebounds and 8 assists on Tuesday.
“He’s a humble superstar. And I’ll tell you, in this day and age, you don’t get Kadary Richmonds anymore,” Pitino said. “Kadary has been a joy to coach. A humble, hard-working guy who’s getting better at his age, he’s like a fine wine. He’s just getting better and he’s just a great teammate. He doesn’t look for credit, he doesn’t look for praise. He makes a mistake, he goes, ‘It’s on me.’ I wish they would all act like that, but he’s a pro. He’s a professional. He acts that way. So, I’m very lucky to have him.”
As the final seconds ticked off the clock, “We want UConn!” chants rang out from certain corners of the Garden. St. John’s heads to Storrs to face UConn on Friday night, another game for the Red Storm to lay down a marker in their quest for a conference title.
But Pitino wasn’t interested in giving the Huskies any bulletin board material. When asked after the game for his thoughts on the chants about the two-time reigning national champions, the coach was succinct:
“I think they’re drunk.”
In a thrilling matchup, St. John’s University emerged victorious over Marquette to maintain their position at the top of the Big East standings. The game was a nail-biter from start to finish, with both teams trading baskets and playing tough defense.Despite a valiant effort from Marquette, St. John’s was able to pull away in the final minutes thanks to some clutch shooting and strong performances from their star players. The win solidifies St. John’s as a force to be reckoned with in the Big East, as they continue their quest for a conference championship.
Fans of St. John’s can celebrate this hard-fought victory and look forward to more exciting games ahead. With their hunger for success and determination to win, St. John’s is proving to be a team to watch in the Big East.

The big January jobs report comes out Friday. Here’s what to expect
A hiring sign is posted on the door of a Taco Bell in Alexandria, Virginia, on Aug. 22, 2024.

The U.S. labor market likely began 2025 in solid fashion, in a bit of a step down from where it closed the previous year.
When the Bureau of Labor Statistics releases its nonfarm payrolls count for January, it is projected to show growth of 169,000, down from 256,000 in December, but nearly in line with the past three-month average. The unemployment rate is projected to stay at 4.1%, according to the Dow Jones consensus for the report, which will be out Friday at 8:30 a.m. ET.
While the takeaway could be that job creation is slowing, the broader view is that the employment picture is holding solid, and it’s not likely to be a problem for the Federal Reserve any time in the near future.
“With inflation at least for now at tolerable levels and firms very comfortable making sustained investment, there’s no reason why we shouldn’t continue to see job growth around 150,000 per month, which is the upper end of what’s needed to keep the labor market stable,” said Joseph Brusuelas, chief economist at RSM. “In other words, we’re at full employment. This is a good problem to have.”
By the time the Fed concluded its final three meetings of 2024, it had cut its key borrowing rate by a full percentage point. In good part, this was because policymakers sought to support a labor market that showed signs of weakening.
However, recent indicators show that while hiring has leveled off, layoffs aren’t increasing and workers aren’t quitting, though job openings are on the decline.
Such relative stability is a welcome sign with the likelihood that the Fed will be on hold, possibly until summer, while officials wait to see the fallout of President Donald Trump‘s fiscal agenda that includes aggressive tariffs against the largest U.S. trading partners.
“The economy is still going to roll on, people are going to make investment decisions, they’re going to get up each morning and go to work,” Brusuelas said.
Annual revisions to take focus
Though the usual payroll number is expected to show more or less status quo conditions, markets also will be watching annual benchmark revisions to both the establishment and household surveys that the BLS compiles.
When the initial revisions were released in August 2024, they showed a stunning 818,000 fewer jobs created than previously reported in the establishment count from April 2023 to March 2024. That total is expected to come down considerably as adjustments are made for immigration and population.
The revisions also are projected to show a record increase of 3.5 million in the population and 2.3 million in household employment, according to Goldman Sachs. The firm sees more modest adjustments upward in labor force participation and unemployment.
The two BLS surveys have differed sharply in the post-Covid years. The establishment survey is used to calculate the nonfarm payrolls number while the BLS derives the unemployment rate from the household count. The latter has shown a less optimistic view of employment conditions that could be corrected with the revisions.
In any event, if the report comes in anywhere near expectations, it’s unlikely to move the needle for the Fed even with the tariff question lingering.
“The labor market is a lot more important to the Fed than what’s going on with tariffs,” said Eric Winograd, director of developed market economic research at AllianceBernstein. “The payrolls numbers are volatile. Anything can happen in any given month. But there’s nothing in particular that makes me think that this month’s print will look meaningfully different than the past few, and that’s enough to keep the Fed on hold.”
In addition to the headline payroll numbers and revisions, the BLS will also release data on average hourly earnings.
The estimate is for January to show a 0.3% increase in wages and a 3.7% 12-month increase. If the annual figure is correct, it will be the lowest level since July 2024.
The big January jobs report is set to be released this Friday, and all eyes are on what the numbers will reveal about the state of the economy. With the ongoing impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and various economic challenges facing the country, this report will provide crucial insights into the job market and overall economic recovery.Economists are predicting that the January jobs report will show a modest increase in job growth, with expectations ranging from 150,000 to 200,000 new jobs added. This would mark a slight improvement from the previous month’s report, which showed a disappointing increase of just 199,000 jobs.
In addition to job growth, analysts will also be closely watching other key indicators in the report, such as the unemployment rate, wage growth, and labor force participation rate. These numbers will provide important context for understanding the overall health of the labor market and the progress being made in the economic recovery.
As we await the release of the January jobs report, it’s important to keep in mind that these numbers are just one piece of the puzzle when it comes to understanding the state of the economy. While a strong report would be a positive sign for the recovery, it’s also important to consider the broader economic context and the challenges that still lie ahead.
Stay tuned for the release of the January jobs report this Friday, and be prepared to analyze the numbers with a critical eye to understand what they mean for the economy moving forward.

Bobby Witt Jr.’s omission from ‘The Show’ cover, Phillies’ upcoming big decisions and more MLB notes
An earlier version of this article described incorrectly the 2025 luxury-tax ramifications of an extension for Vladimir Guerrero Jr. The article has been updated.
Baseball writers frequently are criticized for their Hall of Fame votes, their awards choices and whatever else fans are in a lather about on a particular day. Well, I’ve got a beef of my own with Sony Interactive Entertainment, which recently selected Pittsburgh Pirates right-hander Paul Skenes, Baltimore Orioles shortstop Gunnar Henderson and Cincinnati Reds shortstop Elly De La Cruz for the cover of MLB The Show 25.
You guys ever hear of Bobby Witt Jr.?
Sony wanted to showcase young stars. Skenes, the 2024 NL Rookie of the Year; Henderson, the 2023 AL Rookie of the Year; and De La Cruz, one of the game’s most electrifying talents, certainly were worthy choices. But Witt, who finished second in the 2024 AL MVP voting, two places ahead of Henderson, is more accomplished than any of the players who were honored.
At 24, Witt is a year older than Henderson, 18 months older than De La Cruz and two years older than Skenes. Maybe Sony determined Witt was not young enough for the honor? Maybe it thinks 24 is the new 34?
Then again, Sony does not always make obvious picks. Jazz Chisholm Jr. was the cover choice in 2023, which might have contributed to him getting named the most overrated player of 2024 in The Athletic’s annual MLB Player Poll.
“There’s a huge pool of talented players in MLB which always makes choosing a cover athlete difficult for us at Sony Interactive Entertainment and San Diego Studio,” an SIE public relations representative said.
“Even though we chose three players for the first time in the history of the franchise, there are always deserving guys that don’t make the cover. We couldn’t be more thrilled to have Paul, Gunnar and Elly grace the cover.”
Maybe next year, Bobby. Another nine or 10 WAR season would be difficult to ignore.
Big decisions await Phillies
Compared to recent offseasons, the Philadelphia Phillies have been a little boring. President of baseball operations David Dombrowski accomplished his stated goals, adding Jordan Romano to be a late-inning right-hander, Max Kepler to play left field and Jesús Luzardo and Joe Ross to boost the starting rotation.
Still, as The Athletic’s Matt Gelb notes, this is the first time since 2016-17 that the Phillies did not sign a free agent to a multiyear deal. Next offseason, with nearly $75 million coming off the payroll, figures to be different.
That number is somewhat deceptive. The Phillies likely will want to keep two of their potential free agents, designated hitter Kyle Schwarber, who ranks third in homers behind Aaron Judge and Shohei Ohtani the past two seasons, and catcher J.T. Reamuto, who plays a position where the Phillies lack internal alternatives.
Bryce Harper (left) and Kyle Schwarber (right) are among the Phillies’ core players now in their early 30s. (Bill Streicher / Imagn Images)The problem is that by 2026, the Phillies’ roster will be aging. Schwarber will be 33 that season, Realmuto 35. Zack Wheeler will be 36, Aaron Nola, Trea Turner and Bryce Harper 33. The incorporation of prospects such as right-hander Andrew Painter and shortstop Aidan Miller should help. But the Phillies also might need to add a free agent or two in their primes. Right fielder Kyle Tucker, who will hit the open market next offseason while turning 29, could make particular sense.
The Phillies, in fact, should have plenty of reason to go big in ‘26, the last year of the current collective bargaining agreement. In the worst-case scenario, an owners’ lockout could wipe out part or all of the 2027 season. In a more optimistic scenario, a new CBA would include luxury tax rules that are less cumbersome. And after the ‘26 season, the Phillies’ payroll will be even more flexible, with a combined $38 million between right fielder Nick Castellanos and righty Taijuan Walker coming off the books.
Consider this offseason, then, something of a pause. To maximize their current window, the Phillies are going to need to spend. And be creative. And be smart.
In San Diego, a continuing mystery
San Diego Padres general manager A.J. Preller made an interesting comment at the team’s FanFest over the weekend, saying the club needed to add “a bat or two” and an “arm or two.”
Makes sense. But who?
Of the 40 free agents on The Athletic’s Big Board, only six are unsigned — first baseman Pete Alonso, third baseman Alex Bregman, right-hander Nick Pivetta, lefties Andrew Heaney and José Quintana and outfielder Alex Verdugo.
Alonso and Bregman do not fit either the Padres’ roster or their budget. Pivetta, who rejected a qualifying offer, would cost the team a draft pick, not ideal for a team with the game’s sixth-worst farm system, according to The Athletic’s Keith Law. Heaney, Quintana and Verdugo might hold appeal, but none is a difference-maker.
As Peter Seidler’s widow battles with his brothers for control of the club, Preller’s ability to maneuver is unclear. He has signed only one free agent to a major-league contract, catcher Elias Díaz for the modest sum of $3.5 million. He also has discussed trades for his top potential free agents, infielder Luis Arraez and right-handers Dylan Cease and Michael King. But do the Padres need to subtract to add? Might they add and then subtract? Do they need to subtract at all?
The team is over the $241 million luxury tax threshold, with a payroll that is higher than last season largely because several holdovers are due to receive significant raises. Club officials say they are operating as if it’s “business as usual,” but Preller typically is not this inactive. And the structure of King’s new one-year, $7.75 million contract, with $3.75 million coming in a buyout of a mutual option at the end of the season, reflects a team that appears to be at least somewhat restricted financially.
Tax trouble looming in Toronto?
The Toronto Blue Jays’ luxury-tax payroll, by Fangraphs’ estimation, stands at $273.3 million. Which raises the question: Could the Jays sign a prominent free agent such as Alonso or Bregman, extend first baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and still remain under the highest luxury-tax threshold of $301 million?
The answer is yes. Guerrero already is locked in for 2025 at $28.5 million. The Jays could sign him to an extension beginning in 2026, and even if they included a signing bonus, it would not count against their 2025 luxury-tax payroll. When the Boston Red Sox signed third baseman Rafael Devers to a 10-year, $313.5 million extension in Jan. 2023, his deal began in ‘24. And the portion of his signing bonus the Red Sox paid in ‘23 was factored into his future AAVs.
The Jays have accomplished quite a bit this offseason, trading for Andrés Giménez and signing four free agents – outfielder Anthony Santander, right-hander Max Scherzer and relievers Yimi García and Jeff Hoffman. Considering others who rejected them, from Roki Sasaki to Corbin Burnes to Juan Soto, they hardly are guaranteed to land Alonso or Bregman. Neither signing alone would figure to put them over the highest threshold, the so-called “Steve Cohen Tax,” but any additional moves might.
Maybe the Jays would not care about exceeding the highest threshold. They avoided the tax last season, so they would be treated as a first-time offender, paying 80 percent for each dollar they spent over $301 million. Perhaps more concerning: They are within $8 million of the second-highest threshold, which would move back their top draft pick 10 places in the draft order.
These are first-world problems. If the Jays landed Alonso or Bregman and extended Guerrero, they probably would not worry about short-term sacrifices. Shortstop Bo Bichette and right-hander Chris Bassitt will come off the payroll after this season, outfielder George Springer after the next. And, at least for 2025, Toronto could field a rather interesting team.
Around the horn
• The Kansas City Royals were not the only team that tried to sign free-agent outfielder Anthony Santander to a shorter deal. The Los Angeles Angels also made a run at Santander, proposing three- and four-year concepts, according to sources briefed on the discussions.
Santander instead opted for a five-year, $92.5 million contract with the Blue Jays, two-thirds of which was deferred. The deferrals lowered his present-day value to about $71.5 million for luxury-tax purposes and $68.6 million according to the union, which uses a different discount rate. Santander would have at least approached those numbers with the Royals or Angels. But his total payout would have been lower.
The Angels’ pursuit of Santander is the latest indication of the team continuing to explore upgrades. The addition of a free-agent closer such as Kenley Jansen or Kyle Finnegan is one possibility. But the Angels might prefer to simply go with Ben Joyce, 24, and sign a veteran setup man such as Andrew Chafin or Phil Maton instead.
• The Athletic first reported on Jan. 11 the willingness of both Santander and right-hander Jack Flaherty to sign short-term. Santander subsequently rejected shorter offers and Flaherty on Sunday night agreed to agreed to one, a two-year, $35 million deal with the Detroit Tigers that includes an opt-out after one year.
Flaherty, 29, was the youngest of the 15 domestic starting pitchers on The Athletic’s Free-Agent Big Board. Yet, he failed to command a satisfactory long-term deal even though he was ineligible for a qualifying offer after getting traded in the middle of a season. If healthy, he seems almost certain to opt out. By making 15 starts, he will increase his player option for 2026 from $10 million to $20 million. The latter number, however, still would be $5 million below his 2025 salary, and almost certainly below the qualifying offer as well.
Part of the Tigers’ calculus in signing Flaherty is that they can extend him a QO, which this offseason was $21.05 million. The qualifying offer probably would not hinder Flaherty if he produced a second straight impressive season, something he last did in 2018-19. But it would be a new obstacle, one free agents prefer to avoid.
• Right-hander Nick Pivetta, a modestly accomplished starter, is precisely the kind of free agent who is at risk when he rejects a QO. Teams value their draft picks, often to the point of overvaluing them. So they figure: Is Pivetta worth three years, $15 million if we’re losing the pick? Three years, $18 million? Where is the sweet spot?
The potential for a lockout in 2027 further complicates matters. A team might be less willing to go three years on Pivetta when three might turn into two, again with the loss of at least one pick. The potential for a lockout in 2027 further complicates matters. A team might be less willing to go three years on Pivetta when three might turn into two, again with the loss of at least one pick. Pivetta could wait until after the draft to sign, eliminating draft-pick compensation. But that option, never great to begin with, became even more impractical when the league moved the draft from early June to mid-July in 2021.
• A number of free-agent hitters are on hold while waiting for Alonso and Bregman to make their decisions. Among them: Justin Turner, Yoan Moncada, Randal Grichuk and Ty France. The available hitters also include Harrison Bader, Mark Canha, David Peralta, Tommy Pham and Anthony Rizzo.

As the MLB season continues to heat up, there have been several notable developments that have caught the attention of fans and analysts alike. One of the biggest talking points has been the omission of top prospect Bobby Witt Jr. from the cover of the popular video game ‘The Show’. Despite his impressive performance in the minors and high expectations for his future in the league, many were surprised to see him left off the cover in favor of other players.Meanwhile, the Philadelphia Phillies are facing some big decisions as they navigate their way through the season. With a talented roster that has underperformed at times, the team will have to make some tough choices in the coming weeks to stay competitive in a tough division. Whether it’s making trades, lineup changes, or managerial decisions, the Phillies will need to be strategic in order to make a push for the playoffs.
In other MLB news, several teams are making waves with their performances on the field. The San Francisco Giants continue to surprise everyone with their strong play, while the New York Yankees have struggled to find their footing. With the trade deadline looming, teams will have to assess their strengths and weaknesses in order to make the right moves to bolster their rosters for a playoff push.
As the season progresses, there will undoubtedly be more twists and turns in the MLB landscape. Stay tuned for more updates and analysis on all the latest news and developments in the world of baseball.

#Bobby #Witt #Jr.s #omission #Show #cover #Phillies #upcoming #big #decisions #MLB #notesGoodman: Alabama’s big test is here, and the Tide is ready
This is an opinion column.

There are two key similarities between Alabama basketball coach Nate Oats and former Alabama football coach Nick Saban.
No.1, they both know how to dress, or at least understand that maintaining a classy image in public comes with the job and is a sign of respect for the people they represent.
This might seem trivial to some, but those are probably just the guys who think it’s OK to wear flannel shirts with dress slacks, flip-flops away from the beach, workout attire away from the gym, sweatpants in public, tactical pants to church, saggy jeans anywhere, camo, team jerseys outside of stadiums, tucked in T-shirts and square-toed shoes or boots.
Everyone else appreciates the fact that Oats isn’t the best dressed coach in college basketball by accident and that Saban (or at least Miss Terry) has impeccable fashion sense. Attention to detail matters all the way down to the buttons on the shirt.
Secondly — and this might be a little more important — Oats is like Saban in that he never wavers from the coaching ethos that winning is all that matters.
Too cutthroat? Maybe for some, but that’s one of the things that makes Oats good at his job.
Oats hasn’t turned Alabama basketball into a national contender by handing out participation trophies, which is why sitting point guard Mark Sears against LSU didn’t come as much of a surprise.
The broadcasters calling the game for ESPN made a big deal about Sears being on the bench, but it’s not the first time that Oats has kept Sears out of the rotation this season and it might not be the last either.
Maybe Oats was trying to send a message by putting his best offensive player on the bench, or maybe Alabama’s coach just wanted more length on defense for the second half. Either way, it was the right call. Alabama won and Oats even noted afterwards that it was some of the best defense Alabama had played all season to end a game.
Sears was back in the lineup on Wednesday against Mississippi State and led Alabama with 17 points, six rebounds and nine assists. Once again, though, Oats made the correct decision late in the game when he subbed out Mark Sears and Aden Holloway in favor of taller players.
If only the football coach at Alabama knew how to manage his team so effectively.
No.4 Alabama basketball (18-3, 7-1 in the SEC) returns to action on Saturday with a home game against Georgia. The Tide is one of the deepest teams in the country, and Oats is going to need it to finish out this season. The remaining schedule is like nothing I’ve ever seen. Ten games remain and Alabama’s final seven opponents are all currently ranked in the AP Top 25.
Alabama could make it all the way to the championship game of the NCAA Tournament and have an easier road.
No one has it easy in the SEC, of course. The league has never been better. Some are calling it the best conference in college basketball history. Maybe so. No.1 Auburn (19-1, 7-0) plays eight ranked opponents across its final 11 games. Tennessee, which has lost three of its last four games, is grinding through a stretch of nine ranked teams in its first 10 conference games.
Coach John Calipari left Kentucky for Arkansas this season, but the Hogs are only 1-6 in the SEC.
Lamont Paris won SEC Coach of the Year in 2024, but his South Carolina Gamecocks are 0-8 to begin conference play this season.
The toughest football conference in the country is now the best basketball conference, too. The SEC’s greatest February of hoops begins on Saturday, but that’s just a build up for the big finish.
With Auburn and Alabama one and two in the SEC standings, it looks like league bragging rights and the regular-season title will go through the Heart of Dixie. Alabama and Auburn play twice over the final three weeks of the season. It will be a test of mental toughness like this league has never seen.
In benching Sears, Oats made sure that his point guard would be ready for the fight. And if Sears needs a rest, well, Alabama’s cutthroat, win-first coach planned ahead by taking Auburn’s old point guard and making him better.

#Goodman #Alabamas #big #test #Tide #readyCollege basketball rankings: Alabama up to No. 3, Tennessee makes big jump in AP Top 25
Alabama moved up one spot in the AP Top 25 men’s college basketball poll Monday from No. 4 to No. 3 after a perfect week in SEC play that included a road win over No. 14 Mississippi State and a home win over Georgia to improve to 8-1 in conference play. The Crimson Tide’s rise was aided by a loss by Iowa State, which had been ranked No. 3 for two consecutive weeks, after it stumbled twice this week in Big 12 play with losses to Arizona and Kansas State and fell to No. 8.
Alabama began the season ranked No. 2 and fell in the poll each of the first four weeks of the regular season to as far as No. 10 after a 6-2 start to the season that included losses to Purdue and Oregon. Since December, however, it has won 13 of its last 14 games led by the highest-scoring offense in college basketball.
Bama’s rise has been one of the biggest storylines in the SEC this season, overshadowed only by rival Auburn’s dominance all season. Auburn remained at No. 1 in the AP poll Monday for a fourth consecutive week and is the unanimous No. 1 for a third consecutive week after earning all 62 first-place votes.
Duke, on the heels of an 87-70 win over rival North Carolina over the weekend, remained at No. 2 for a third consecutive week, extending its stay in the top five to nine weeks. The Blue Devils did not pick off any first-place votes from the No. 1 Tigers but earned a season-high 1,488 points in the poll, up from 1,484 a week ago.

KU falls after biggest blown lead
Kansas is tracking toward a finish outside of the top three in its conference in back to back seasons for the first time in 40-plus years — after starting both last season and this season as the preseason No. 1. It fell in the poll this week five spots to No. 16, its lowest ranking of the season, after a 1-1 week in which it squeezed out a close home win over UCF and fell on the road 81-70 at Baylor — after gagging away a 21-point lead. The 21-point blown lead is the program’s largest on record.
Texas Tech, Maryland make big moves
The two biggest risers in the AP poll this week were Texas Tech, which moved from No. 22 to No. 13, and Maryland, which went from unranked to No. 18. It’s the highest ranking for Texas Tech since the final AP poll in 2021-22. It’s Maryland’s first appearance in the poll since the 2022-23 season and highest ranking since climbing to No. 13 in Week 5 that season.
How about Missouri?
Don’t let Auburn, Alabama, Tennessee and Florida distract you from brilliance elsewhere in the SEC. The league also has five more ranked teams including Missouri, which moved up to No. 15 this week. It marks the highest ranking for a Missouri basketball team in the AP poll this late in the season since 2011-12.
In the latest AP Top 25 rankings for college basketball, Alabama has climbed up to No. 3, while Tennessee has made a big jump as well. The Crimson Tide have been on a hot streak, with impressive wins over top-ranked teams, propelling them to one of the top spots in the nation.Meanwhile, the Volunteers have also been making noise in the rankings, moving up significantly due to their strong performances on the court. With a talented roster and a winning mentality, Tennessee is proving to be a force to be reckoned with in college basketball.
As the season continues, it will be interesting to see how these teams fare against tough competition and if they can maintain their rankings in the AP Top 25. Stay tuned for more updates on college basketball rankings and the exciting matchups ahead.

Big Ten in updated Coaches Poll, AP Top 25
Over the past several months, a handful of contenders have emerged as the Big Ten’s best hopes for its first men’s basketball national championship team since 2000.
The program that won that now-25-year-old title, Michigan State, is one of them, with a surprising 18-3 record. Purdue isn’t quite where it was last season with Zach Edey, but it’s not terribly far off with Braden Smith leading the way. Wisconsin, with a potent and shockingly fast-paced offense, is excelling. Newcomers Oregon and UCLA have turned heads. Few teams in the country are playing better than Maryland right now. And Michigan, behind a pair of versatile 7-footers, has impressed in its first season under Dusty May.
The past week included some notable results that shape both the conference and national landscape. Tom Izzo’s Spartans saw their 13-game win streak come to an end in a loss at USC. Maryland knocked off Wisconsin 76-58. UCLA blew out Oregon 78-52. Purdue held off archrival Indiana 81-76.

#Big #Ten #updated #Coaches #Poll #TopNeymar, Antony, Philippe Coutinho and many big signings that failed despite the big money they were paid – Telegraph
Following the conclusion of Brazilian star Neymar’s contract with Saudi champions Al Hilal, the renowned media outlet Goal has ranked the worst moves in football history…
Money makes the football world go round, but big spending doesn’t always guarantee success.
In the modern era, clubs are more willing than ever to spend money to achieve trophies.
However, time and time again, high-quality players have failed to meet their high transfer fees.
It’s not always their fault, of course. Sometimes, it’s simply a matter of being transferred to the wrong club, with the wrong manager at the wrong time.
Whatever the reasons, many of the biggest transfers of all time have resulted in huge mistakes, listed below.
19. James Rodríguez: Monaco – Real Madrid (2014)
Real Madrid paid €80 million for James Rodríguez after a stellar performance at the 2014 World Cup. After a good season, his career at Madrid declined and he was sent on loan to Bayern Munich, ultimately leaving without any profit for the club.
18. Zlatan Ibrahimović: Inter – Barcelona (2009)
Barcelona spent €69.5 million and Samuel Eto’o to bring in Zlatan Ibrahimović. His relationship with manager Pep Guardiola was strained, and he left after a short and problematic season.
17. Neymar: Barcelona – Paris Saint-Germain (2017)
Neymar became the most expensive player in history when PSG paid €222 million for him. Despite some excellent performances, he never achieved the expected success and left for Saudi Arabia in 2023 after many injuries and a difficult period.
16. Kepa Arrizabalaga: Athletic Bilbao-Chelsea (2018)
Kepa, the world’s most expensive goalkeeper, was transferred for 80 million euros, but failed to justify the sums paid.
After a few poor seasons, he is now on loan at Bournemouth.
15. Harry Maguire: Leicester City – Man Utd (2019)
Manchester United paid €80 million for Maguire, but he did not justify this investment, making numerous mistakes and being constantly criticized by fans.
14. Romelu Lukaku: Everton – Man Utd (2017)
Lukaku was signed for €75 million, but although he started well, he struggled during his second season and left after a problematic spell at Manchester United.
13. Alvaro Morata: Real Madrid – Chelsea (2017)
Chelsea paid €60 million for Morata, but he only had a few brilliant spells, performing poorly throughout his time in London.
12. Antoine Griezmann: Atletico Madrid – Barcelona (2019)
Barcelona paid 120 million euros for Griezmann, but he had a short and unsuccessful spell at the Catalans, and then returned to Atletico Madrid.
11. Jack Grealish: Aston Villa – Manchester City (2021)
Grealish was signed for €100 million but failed to break through as expected, contributing less than expected during his first season.
10. Randal Kolo Muani: Eintracht Frankfurt – PSG (2023)
PSG paid €80 million for Kolo Muani, but he has had a poor spell at the club, scoring just 6 goals in Ligue 1.
9. Nicolas Pépé: Lille – Arsenal (2019)
Arsenal paid €79 million for Pépé, but he had a short successful spell and was sent out on loan, culminating in a free transfer to Trabzonspor.
8. Joao Félix: Benfica – Atletico Madrid (2019)
Atletico Madrid paid 126 million euros for Félix, but he did not justify this amount and after several loans, he moved to Chelsea and Barcelona.
7. Paul Pogba: Juventus – Man Utd (2016)
Pogba was transferred for 105 million euros, but after an unsuccessful period and many fluctuations, he returned to Juventus in 2022.
6. Romelu Lukaku: Inter – Chelsea (2021)
Chelsea paid €119 million for Lukaku, but he had a poor season and was eventually loaned out to Inter and Roma.
5. Antony: Ajax – Manchester United (2022)
Manchester United spent 82 million euros on Antony, but he failed to show the expected performance, becoming an example of failed investments.
4. Neymar: PSG – Al Hilal (2023)
PSG sold Neymar for 90 million euros, considering him a major failure after a long period of injuries and other problems.
3. Philippe Coutinho: Liverpool – Barcelona (2018)
Barcelona paid €120 million for Coutinho, but he failed to show his worth, being loaned out and then leaving for €20 million.
2. Eden Hazard: Chelsea – Real Madrid (2019)
Hazard was signed for €100 million, but he had a long injury-plagued spell and failed to adapt to Real Madrid’s style.
1. Ousmane Dembélé: Borussia Dortmund – Barcelona (2017)
Barcelona spent 105 million euros on Dembélé after losing Neymar, but he had many physical problems and failed to justify the investment, moving to PSG.

In the world of football, big money signings often come with high expectations. However, not every big money signing lives up to the hype. Neymar, Antony, Philippe Coutinho and many other high profile players have failed to meet expectations despite the hefty price tags attached to their transfers.Neymar, once hailed as one of the brightest talents in the game, has struggled to find consistent form since his move to Paris Saint-Germain. Despite his undeniable talent, the Brazilian forward has been plagued by injuries and off-field controversies, leading many to question whether he was worth the record-breaking fee PSG paid to sign him.
Antony, another Brazilian starlet, was tipped for greatness when he made the move to Ajax from Sao Paulo. However, the winger has failed to make a significant impact in the Eredivisie, leading some to question whether he has what it takes to succeed at the highest level.
Philippe Coutinho, once considered one of the best midfielders in the world, has also struggled to justify the huge transfer fees paid for his services. After a disappointing spell at Barcelona, the Brazilian playmaker has failed to recapture his best form at Bayern Munich and Aston Villa, leaving many to wonder if his best days are behind him.
These players are just a few examples of big money signings that have failed to deliver on their potential. While football is a fickle game and success is never guaranteed, the pressure of living up to a big price tag can often be a burden too heavy to bear.

Bournemouth 1-2 Liverpool analysis: Victory ‘a big hurdle cleared’
Sometimes you just get a sense during the season that you are watching a special team, and I cannot be the only one who felt that wutg Liverpool’s win at Bournemouth.
There were lots of elements of their performance that were eye-catching.
Mohamed Salah’s genius, Alisson’s sharpness, the confidence, the control, the hunger… Of course, there were moments of concern for Liverpool in the game, but that is because they were facing a team stacked with self-belief.
This is a big hurdle cleared in their pursuit of the title.
It is also mightily impressive that Liverpool look indestructible when the future of three of their most important players is so uncertain. Some teams would not cope with that.
Salah’s majestic moment is only going to create more headlines, but I am not sure anything is going to distract them this season.
Liverpool secured a hard-fought 2-1 victory against Bournemouth on Saturday, with goals from Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane proving to be enough to secure all three points. The win was significant for the Reds, as it marked a crucial hurdle cleared in their quest for the Premier League title. The victory was not without its challenges, as Bournemouth put up a strong fight and made life difficult for Liverpool throughout the match. The hosts took the lead early on through Callum Wilson, but Liverpool showed their resilience and fought back to secure the win.
Manager Jurgen Klopp was full of praise for his team after the match, highlighting the importance of grinding out results in tough games like this one. He emphasized the importance of staying focused and not dropping points against teams lower in the table.
The win sees Liverpool maintain their lead at the top of the Premier League table, with Manchester City hot on their heels. With just a few games left in the season, every victory is crucial, and Klopp will be hoping that this win against Bournemouth will give his team the momentum they need to push on and secure the title.
Overall, the victory against Bournemouth was a big hurdle cleared for Liverpool, and it showed that they have the mental strength and determination to grind out results when it matters most. With the title race heating up, Liverpool will need to continue to show this level of resilience if they are to end their long wait for a Premier League title.

#Bournemouth #Liverpool #analysis #Victory #big #hurdle #clearedRecap: Denver Nuggets get up big and then survive rally from Charlotte Hornets for 107-104 victory
The Denver Nuggets were looking to finish out their five game road trip on a high note tonight. After getting a victory last night, the Nuggets backed it up with another “W” against the Charlotte Hornets. Denver made it more interesting than it needed to be after they squandered a big lead in the second half to fall behind by four points with less than a minute to play. Nikola Jokic willed them to victory once again to cap off another big night for him and another triple double. It wasn’t exactly pretty, but the Nuggets win another one on a back to back, final score 107-104.
Neither team could make many shots to open the game. The score was still 2-2 at the nine and a half minute mark. Jokic got some easy buckets and also buried a three to build a Denver lead. There wasn’t much offense outside of Nikola though which kept the lead from growing a ton. Charlotte was still shooting a horrid percentage from the floor so Denver stayed in front. Zeke Nnaji made an early appearance as one of the first guys off the bench and Jalen Pickett followed shortly after. Denver went cold from the floor while Charlotte remained cold. Both teams started working for free throws and the Nuggets had more success to close the quarter. After one they led 27-20.

The Nuggets bench unit had to battle for points with Christian Braun doing most of the battling. They also kept the Hornets off the scoreboard and pushed the lead into double digits. The reserve group kept playing hard and kept growing their advantage. That led to an extended 20-8 run for Denver and a double digit lead when Jokic came back in. Charlotte responded and the Nuggets suddenly couldn’t buy a basket. The Hornets went on a 9-0 run and got back within three before Denver finally got a couple buckets in the final moments of the half. They went to the locker room leading 54-46.

The Nuggets exerted their will to open the second half and easily pushed the lead back above a dozen. Jamal Murray had a quiet first half but led the Nuggets offense early in the third quarter. They slowed down after that but Charlotte continued to miss shots, other than Nick Smith Jr. He was hitting threes but it seemed like every time he got one the Nuggets had an answer. Still, the Hornets weren’t going to just go away. They went on a run down the stretch of the third to get back within eight. Denver was able to stop Charlotte there but a sloppy final minute let the Hornets cut into the lead again and the third ended with the Nuggets up 90-81.

The bench unit struggled to score to start the fourth quarter and the Hornets closed in. Nnaji had some solid minutes getting a couple easy baskets and piling up blocks. Charlotte wouldn’t give in and other than Nnaji no one could score, literally. Eventually the compelte lack of offense allowed the Hornets to push all the way back and tie the game at 94. Jokic settled Denver down and helped get a couple buckets but Miles Bridges was attacking on the other end. The game stayed tied going into the final two minutes of the game. Bridges got a bucket to give Charlotte their first lead since 2-0 and then hit another to put the Hornets up four. Jokic responded with an and-one and then the Hornets inexplicably fouled him in the back court with 18 seconds left. He sunk them both and then fed Murray for a fastbreak layup off a miss to put Denver up 107-104. The Hornets couldn’t get a buzzer beater three and Denver survives to win.

— NBA (@NBA) February 2, 2025
The Denver Nuggets came out strong against the Charlotte Hornets, building a big lead early in the game. However, the Hornets made a strong comeback in the second half, putting pressure on the Nuggets to hold onto their lead.Despite the Hornets’ rally, the Nuggets managed to hang on for a 107-104 victory. Nikola Jokic led the way for Denver with a near triple-double, scoring 19 points, grabbing 11 rebounds, and dishing out 8 assists.
The Nuggets’ defense also played a key role in securing the win, forcing the Hornets into tough shots and turnovers down the stretch. Overall, it was a hard-fought victory for Denver as they continue to climb the standings in the Western Conference.
Next up, the Nuggets will look to carry this momentum into their next game and continue their winning streak. Keep an eye on this team as they look to make a push in the playoffs.
