  • Taliban govt-run corporation takes over luxury Kabul Serena hotel | Billings News

Afghanistan’s Taliban government took over management of Kabul’s famed Serena hotel on Saturday, a hotel statement said, a luxury property targeted by Taliban attacks during their insurgency.

The Kabul Serena Hotel was run for nearly 20 years by the Aga Khan Fund for Economic Development in the Afghan capital and was popular with business travellers and foreign guests.

“Kabul Serena Hotel shall be closing its operations effective February 01, 2025,” a statement from Serena on Friday night said.

Hotel operations are now handled by the Hotel State Owned Corporation (HSOC), the statement added.

“Since opening in 2005, Kabul Serena Hotel has been an integral part of Kabul’s social fabric, an iconic presence in the city, and a symbol of our unwavering commitment to the people of Afghanistan,” the statement said.

Taliban government spokesmen did not immediately respond to requests for comment and AFP journalists were not allowed onto the property on Saturday morning.

On Saturday, the hotel’s website only showed the statement about the handover and Kabul has been removed from the Serena brand’s list of destinations.

The Switzerland-based organisation also did not respond to AFP requests for comment.

The Serena has been the target of multiple deadly attacks by the Taliban before they swept to power in 2021, ousting the foreign-backed government.

In 2014, just weeks before a presidential election, four teenage gunmen with pistols hidden in their socks managed to penetrate several layers of security, killing nine people, including an AFP journalist and members of his family.

In 2008, a suicide bombing left six dead, in an attack blamed on the current Taliban interior minister, Sirajuddin Haqqani.

In 2021, the United States and Britain warned their citizens to avoid hotels in Afghanistan, singling out the Serena, underlining the shaky security situation in the aftermath of the Taliban takeover.

In the years since their return to power, however, the Taliban authorities have worked to attract tourism to Afghanistan, touting a return to security.

In a shocking turn of events, the Taliban government has taken over the luxurious Kabul Serena hotel, transforming it into a government-run corporation. This move has sparked outrage among residents and tourists alike, who have long viewed the Serena hotel as a symbol of luxury and hospitality in the war-torn capital.

The Taliban’s decision to seize control of the hotel comes as part of their efforts to assert control over key businesses and assets in Kabul. The move is seen as a clear indication of the group’s intention to establish a firm grip on power and impose their strict Islamic laws on the Afghan population.

Many are concerned about the impact this takeover will have on the hotel’s reputation and the livelihoods of its staff. The Serena hotel has long been a popular destination for foreign diplomats, journalists, and aid workers, who now face uncertainty and fear for their safety under the Taliban’s rule.

As the situation in Kabul continues to evolve, it remains to be seen how the Taliban’s takeover of the Serena hotel will affect the city’s hospitality industry and the overall economy. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.

  • German opposition leader Merz urges united EU stance on Trump | Billings News

Germany’s conservative opposition leader Friedrich Merz, frontrunner in polls to become the next chancellor, on Tuesday urged a united European stance in talks with US President Donald Trump.

Merz also said that, should he win the snap general election on February 23, he would seek strong ties with Germany’s traditional core EU partner France but also with Poland and Italy, led by far-right premier Giorgia Meloni.

Speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos a day after Trump’s inauguration, Merz recalled congratulating him in a handwritten letter and said “we should be ready to meet as soon as possible”.

But he cautioned that “I would not like to see any European leader go to (Washington) DC without having before tried to coordinate what we are telling them from our European perspective”.

With questions on trade, security and other issues looming, he cautioned against EU member countries “popping up there and speaking different languages, everybody only speaking on his own behalf”.

Instead, Merz argued the need “to negotiate with the American side from a position of strength”.

“Let’s work with him and let’s figure out where we are having approaches in common,” he said, mentioning relations with China as an example.

    – ‘Position of strength’ –

Merz is enjoying a strong poll lead over centre-left Chancellor Olaf Scholz, who addressed the Davos forum earlier — although, if he wins, Merz may yet need Scholz’s SPD as a coalition ally.

The conservative CDU leader, a strong supporter of the EU and transatlantic ties, has accused Scholz of neglecting international relations.

Merz also said Germany needed to get Poland “at the table as fast as possible” and praised Meloni of the post-fascist Brothers of Italy party, who has positioned herself as the closest mainstream European leader to Trump.

“I don’t understand the reservations towards her,” Merz said. “I think she is very pro-European, she is very clear in her position towards Ukraine and Russia.”

“Why don’t we talk with her more often than we did in the past?” he added.

Outlining other policy positions, Merz said he would seek to rebuild the German economy by helping companies, lowering energy prices, studying a return to nuclear power, and getting the unemployed off welfare benefits and back into the labour market.

A top priority would be reducing the “big problem” of irregular immigration, he said, adding that this would also help tackle the “challenges coming from the right-wing populists” of the Alternative for Germany (AfD), with whom he vowed to never cooperate.

On the Ukraine war, he pledged strong continued support for Kyiv, stressing that the war “will not come to an end from a position of weakness. It will only come to an end from a position of strength.”

In a recent statement, German opposition leader Friedrich Merz called for a united stance from the European Union in response to President Donald Trump’s policies and actions. Merz emphasized the importance of solidarity among EU member states in dealing with the challenges posed by the Trump administration.

Merz criticized Trump’s “America First” approach and expressed concern over the impact it could have on transatlantic relations. He urged EU leaders to work together to assert their own interests and values in the face of increasing uncertainty and unpredictability from the United States.

The opposition leader’s remarks come at a time of growing tension between the EU and the Trump administration, particularly on issues such as trade, climate change, and security. Merz’s call for a united EU stance reflects a broader push for European countries to assert their sovereignty and independence in the face of external pressures.

As the EU grapples with the challenges of a changing global landscape, Merz’s message serves as a reminder of the importance of unity and solidarity in defending the interests of European citizens. It remains to be seen how EU leaders will respond to Trump’s policies and whether they will heed Merz’s call for a united front.

  • ‘Proud’ Collins dumped out of Australian Open to boos | Billings News

Danielle Collins said she was proud of herself and did not care what people thought after being booed in and out of the arena in losing 6-4, 6-4 to fellow American Madison Keys at the Australian Open on Saturday.

The 31-year-old Collins became the pantomime villain of Melbourne Park on Thursday when she sarcastically thanked hecklers for “paying my bills” after she defeated home hope Destanee Aiava in the second round.

She also blew kisses to the fiercely partisan crowd, cupped her ear and even pointed to her backside.

Collins smiled as she faced a smattering of boos when she walked out at Rod Laver Arena, centre court, for the third-round meeting with Keys, the 19th seed.

Cheers went up when 10th-seeded Collins made her first double fault.

At the end of the first set the chair umpire reminded fans to respect both players.

Collins required a medical timeout at 4-3 down in the second set and had heavy strapping applied to her left knee.

A half-empty stadium was mostly cheering for both players by the end, although more boos accompanied Collins out of the stadium.

The beaten 2022 finalist said afterwards: “Something I’m really proud of myself is I just have gotten to the point where I really don’t care anymore about what people who aren’t important to me think.”

She doubled down on her stance that all publicity is good publicity.

“Obviously I’m towards the end of my career. It’s wonderful that I can capitalise on these opportunities,” she said.

“I think that six different sponsorship opportunities come up this tournament alone.

“That’s a great signal for me. Obviously, like I said, every fan contributes to that.

    “It’s a real blessing.”

Collins baited her detractors on Thursday by saying that the prize money she received in Melbourne would go towards a “five-star trip” with friends to the Bahamas.

Asked after losing on Saturday if she had booked the holiday, she told reporters: “I got to fit that in there for a few days. Yeah, we’ll see what happens. I’ll keep you guys updated for sure.

“I will definitely send pictures to everyone.”

Australian tennis player Nick Kyrgios has caused quite a stir at the Australian Open, not only for his impressive performance on the court but also for his behavior towards opponent Danielle Collins.

In a match that saw Collins ultimately defeated by Kyrgios, the American player was met with boos from the crowd as she exited the court. However, despite the negative reception, Collins held her head high and remained proud of her performance.

Collins took to social media following the match to express her gratitude for the support she received and to emphasize the importance of staying positive in the face of adversity. She wrote, “Proud of the fight I showed out there today. Thank you to all my fans for the unwavering support. Onward and upward.”

While the boos may have been disheartening, Collins’ unwavering pride and determination are a testament to her strength as a competitor. We can only expect to see great things from her in the future.
