  • Loved Black Warrant? Here are 7 similar nail-biting, goosebump-inducing shows on Netflix, Amazon Prime Video and more you can binge on right after

It’s been a minute since an Indian web series received the kind of hype being heaped on Vikramaditya Motwane’s Black Warrant. Filmcritics and mass audiences alike are in tandem, calling the seven-episode Netflix series as one of the most finely-crafted shows of recent times. The crime thriller, which is based on the 2019 book co-authored by jailor Sunil Gupta and journalist Sunetra Choudhury, chronicles a series of notorious historical events which took place within the hallowed walls of Tihar Jail, Asia’s largest prison, from the period 1981 to 1986. This includes the mysterious incarceration of the infamous ‘Bikini Killer’ Charles Sobhraj, and the uncomfortable accounts of Delhi criminals Billa and Ranga, who faced the ultimate charge — capital punishment — for the sexual assault and murder of two teen siblings in 1982.

Black Warrant, both book and movie, features an unexpected protagonist — a newly appointed, and idealistic young jailer, who, despite the almost transparent corruption clamouring his (professional) world, attempts to work by the book. If you’ve already binge-watched the series, which features veteran Bollywood actor Shashi Kapoor’s grandson, Zahan Kapoor, as the protagonist, here’s a carefully curated list of similar titles that guarantee nail-biting action, jaw-dropping mystery and stellar performances.

The latter also turns the spotlight on the complex activities and power dynamics taking place between the authorities and the inmates within the prison wall, although Prison Break focuses on the doings of a wrongly convicted man and his infamous plan to escape his confines.

    2. Paatal Lok — Amazon Prime Video

11 New Netflix Series Premiering In 2025 That Are Worth The Binge

The new year is returning with many Netflix fan favorites, including the second seasons of XO, Kitty, The Night Agent, The Recruit, and Wednesday, which was the Most Popular English TV series on Netflix with 252 million views in its first season. In addition, Wednesday spent 20 weeks on the Global Top 10 and reached the Top 10 in 93 countries.

Shows with highly anticipated third seasons are Ginny & Georgia and Squid Game (this will be the final season of the Korean sensation). Here are ten new foreign series to keep Squid Game fans busy until then. Diehard Stranger Things and You fans can also expect to be blown away by the fifth and final seasons of those shows.

Fan favorite Cobra Kai will return with the third and final part of its sixth season. Big Mouth, the critically acclaimed and Emmy-winning adult animated comedy about the glorious nightmare of puberty will also premiere its eighth and final season in 2025.

As for brand new titles, Netflix has several incredible series premiering in the coming year. Here are eleven new shows to have on your radar. Many of these series do not have confirmed premiere dates as of yet.

    American Primeval

Pete Berg, Taylor Kitsch, and Eric Newman teamed up again after their Netflix hit Painkiller for what each has described as the most challenging project of their careers. The cast and crew weathered extremely harsh conditions in the New Mexico mountains for 13 months to film this six-episode limited series, which premieres on January 9. In an interview, Berg said he was “in a feral state” while shooting this tale about a violent 1857 America as the Indigenous, the Mormons, and the pioneers fought and died to keep and control their land. Betty Gilpin stars opposite Kitsch.

    Zero Day

In this thrilling and terrifying new six-episode limited series, a beloved and highly respected former United States President leads the investigation into a nationwide cyber attack while battling his demons. This show from American Primeval’s Eric Newman explores how we find truth in a world in crisis. In an era rife with conspiracy theories and subterfuge, how much of those forces are products of our own doing, perhaps our imagining? This thriller starring Robert De Niro, Angela Bassett, Lizzy Caplan, Jesse Plemons, Joan Allen, Connie Britton, Dan Stevens, and Matthew Modine premieres on February 20.

    The Residence

This mystery revolves around 132 rooms, 157 suspects, one dead body, one wildly eccentric detective, and one disastrous State Dinner. This screwball whodunnit is set in the upstairs, downstairs, and backstairs of the White House, among the eclectic staff of the world’s most famous mansion. Viewers will find out who did it when this series from executive producers Shonda Rhimes and Betsy Beers premieres on March 20. The cast includes Uzo Aduba, Giancarlo Esposito, Ken Marino, and Randall Park.

    Running Point

Kate Hudson stars as Isla Gordon, a woman whose life is upended when a scandal forces her brother to resign from his position, and she is appointed president of the Los Angeles Waves, one of the most storied professional basketball franchises, and her family business. Ambitious and often overlooked, Isla will have to prove to her skeptical brothers, the board, and the larger sports community that she is the right choice for the job. This underdog comedy comes from Mindy Kaling, Ike Barinholtz, and David Stassen. The ten-episode series will premiere in the early part of 2025 and stars Brenda Song, Drew Tarver, Scott MacArthur, Fabrizio Guido, Toby Sandeman, Chet Hanks, Jay Ellis, and Max Greenfield.

    Death By Lightning

This drama series brings to life the epic and stranger-than-fiction true story of James Garfield, the reluctant 20th president of the United States, and his greatest admirer Charles Guiteau, the man who would come to kill him. This series starring Betty Gilpin, Matthew Macfadyen, Nick Offerman, Michael Shannon, Bradley Whitford, and Shea Whigham will premiere in 2025.

    Apple Cider Vinegar

Set at the birth of Instagram, this story follows two young women who set out to cure their life-threatening illnesses through health and wellness, influencing their global online communities along the way. All of which would be incredibly inspiring if it were all true. This is a true-ish story based on a lie, about the rise and fall of a wellness empire, the culture that built it up, and the people who tore it down. Kaitlyn Dever, Alycia Debnam-Carey, and Aisha Dee star in what is sure to be one of the biggest hits for the streamer in the new year.

    Pulse

Netflix’s first-ever procedural medical drama series follows the staff of Miami’s busiest Level 1 Trauma Center as they navigate medical emergencies as a young ER doctor named Danny Simms is unexpectedly promoted to Chief Resident amidst the fallout of her provocative romantic relationship. This ten-episode drama comes from creator, showrunner, and executive producer Zoe Robyn and showrunner and executive producer Carlton Cuse.

    Sirens

This dark comedy comes from Molly Smith Metzler (Maid) and stars Julianne Moore, Meghann Fahy, and Kevin Bacon. The story follows Devon (Fahy) who thinks her sister Simone (Milly Alcock) has a creepy relationship with her new boss, the enigmatic socialite Michaela Kell (Moore). Michaela’s cult-ish life of luxury is like a drug to Simone, and Devon has decided it’s time for an intervention. When Devon tracks her sister down to say WTF, she has no idea what a formidable opponent Michaela will be. Told throughout one explosive weekend at The Kells’ lavish beach estate, Sirens is an incisive, sexy, and darkly funny exploration of women, power, and class.

    Black Rabbit

Jason Bateman and Jude Law star in this new series that follows the story of the owner of a New York City hotspot who allows his turbulent brother back into his life, thus opening the door to escalating dangers that threaten to bring down everything he’s built.

    The Four Seasons

This highly-anticipated comedy comes from Tina Fey. She stars alongside Steve Carell, Colman Domingo, and Will Forte in the story of three suburban couples who vacation together each season but tensions run high when one of the couples splits up and the husband brings a much younger woman on subsequent trips. Netflix has not announced a premiere date for this one but it is sure to be a hilarious escape.

    Too Much

This romantic comedy comes from Lena Dunham (Girls) and stars Megan Stalter, Will Sharpe, Michael Zegan, Rita Wilson, Andrew Scott, Andrew Rannells, Aylin Scott, and Emily Ratajkowski. The story follows Jessica, a New York workaholic who moves to London after a breakup. Her plans of being alone fall by the wayside when she meets Felix and she reconsiders finding love again.

San Francisco House Prices Drop Back to 2019, Condo Prices to 2015, as Tech Jobs in the City & Silicon Valley Evaporate after Drunken Hiring Binge

Housing Bust 2 reverses part of the “Housing Crisis” when people with good incomes could no longer afford to live in the City.

By Wolf Richter for WOLF STREET.

The big decline in tech employment in San Francisco and the northern part of Silicon Valley that we’ll get to in a moment has put its stamp on home prices in the city of San Francisco.

Unsustainable home-price spikes are, well, unsustainable.

Single-family house prices: -15.4% from the peak. In the city of San Francisco, prices of mid-tier single-family houses in November have dropped by 15.4% from the peak in May 2022, to $1.39 million, seasonally adjusted, and are back where they’d first been in 2019. October and November were down a tad from the prior three months.

“Mid-tier” to reduce the effects of shifts in the mix; “seasonally adjusted” to reduce the effects of seasonality; and “smoothed” (three-month average) to reduce monthly zigzags, as per data from the Zillow Home Value Index (ZHVI).

Slowly undoing the “Housing Crisis.” In the decade from 2012 to May 2022, ZHVI for single-family houses had spiked by 160%, triggering what was locally called the “Housing Crisis,” where middleclass employees with good incomes could no longer afford to live in the City.

Since May 2022, prices have now reversed about 25% (-$253,000) of the 10-year price spike (+$1.013 million), thereby beginning to alleviate the “Housing Crisis” that has caused so much damage to the City’s economic fabric.

This spike in house prices from 2012 to 2022 made San Francisco too expensive, forced employers in the City to pay huge salaries, driving up their primary costs, which pushed many of them to places where housing costs and wages were a lot lower.

And the City lost people, and it lost jobs, especially jobs in tech and finance. And home prices began to careen down, but it’s a slow bumpy process.

Condo & co-op prices: -14.7% from the peak. Condos and Co-ops account for about half of the home sales in San Francisco. Nearly all new construction over the past two decades has been multifamily (condo and rentals), and there is a lot of new condo supply coming on the market in central locations.

In the city of San Francisco, prices of mid-tier condos, seasonally adjusted and as three-month average, have dropped by 14.7% from the peak in May 2022, to $986,000, and are back where they’d first been in 2015.

From the beginning of 2012 through May 2022, over those 10 years, condo prices doubled. But since May 2022, prices have now reversed about 30% (-$170,000) of the 10-year price spike (+$576,000), thereby beginning to alleviate the Housing Crisis.

Jobs in San Francisco & Northern Part of Silicon Valley.

San Francisco and the northern part of Silicon Valley – the counties of San Francisco and San Mateo which make up the San Francisco-Redwood City-South San Francisco Metropolitan Division – have been among the epicenters of tech jobs in the US, and the epicenter of tech job booms and busts.

We’re going to look at payroll jobs from the Establishment Survey by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The metro-level data was released on December 20. These jobs are tracked by business location to which the employee is assigned, regardless of where the employee lives. If a worker commutes from the East Bay to an office in San Francisco, it counts as a job in this Metropolitan Division. Same with remote employees.

Jobs in tech and social media are largely in two industries: “Information” and “Professional, Scientific, and Technical Services.”

Information: Over the past four months through November, payrolls in this industry roughly remained unchanged at 105,300, the lowest level since January 2020, down by 20%, or by 26,200 employees, from the peak in August 2022.

The drop has now undone the entire hiring boom that occurred during the pandemic – a hiring boom that occurred even as other industries (Leisure & Hospitality, Retail, Healthcare, etc.) were gutted by massive layoffs.

During the Dotcom Bust, the Information industry in the metropolitan division lost 46% of its jobs, beginning in late 2000 and hitting a low in mid-2006, and then it remained low for another four years, before taking off again.

The industry accounted for 9.1% of total payrolls in this metropolitan division in November. In overall US payrolls, jobs in Information account for only about 2% of overall employment.

Jobs in Information are at facilities where people primarily work on web search portals, data processing, data transmission, information services, software publishing, motion picture and sound recording, broadcasting including over the Internet, and telecommunications.

Professional, Scientific, and Technical Services: Employment has remained roughly unchanged since April, maybe a sign it bottomed out. At about 213,500 employees in November, payrolls have dropped by 7% from the peak in June 2022.

This big broad industry accounted for 18.4% of total employment in the two-county area. It includes many sectors outside tech and social media: Legal advice and representation; accounting, bookkeeping, and payroll services; architectural, engineering, and specialized design services; computer services; consulting services; research services; advertising services; photographic services; translation and interpretation services; veterinary services; and other professional, scientific, and technical services.

During the Dotcom Bust, the industry lost 28% of its jobs in the metropolitan division until it bottomed out in late-2003. But given how much broader the sector is, it didn’t drop nearly as much as Information, and recovered much faster.

Combined, Information and Professional, Scientific, and Technical Services shed 42,100 payroll jobs since the peak in mid-2022.

The AI-related hiring boom – though the number of AI jobs is relatively small – has had a strange and mixed effect, with many companies announcing layoffs out of one side of their mouth, and AI-related hiring plans out of the other side of their mouth. And maybe it has now caused tech jobs in the area to stabilize.

Total private-sector payrolls have dropped to 1.014 million jobs, first seen in mid-2018. Since mid-2022, they’ve dropped by 3.5%, or by 36,500 jobs. Since the peak in February 2020, they’ve dropped by 5.7%, or by 60,900 jobs.

The plunge in payrolls during the pandemic was driven by Leisure & Hospitality, Retail, Healthcare, and some other industries that have now largely recovered.

During the Dotcom Bust, the two-county area lost 17% of its private-sector payroll jobs, a depression-type decline, compared to which the current decline is relatively moderate:

Employment at nonbank mortgage lenders nationwide collapsed by 37% this time around, to the lowest level since 1997. Read… Housing Bubble & Bust #1 and #2 as Seen through Employment in Mortgage Lending

In a shocking turn of events, San Francisco house prices have plummeted back to 2019 levels, while condo prices have dropped all the way back to 2015. This sudden crash in the real estate market comes as tech jobs in the city and Silicon Valley evaporate after a drunken hiring binge.

For years, tech companies in the Bay Area have been on a hiring spree, gobbling up talent at astronomical rates and driving up housing prices to unprecedented levels. But now, as the tech industry faces uncertainty and layoffs due to the economic fallout from the COVID-19 pandemic, the bubble has burst.

With companies like Uber, Airbnb, and Lyft laying off thousands of employees and slashing budgets, the once red-hot housing market in San Francisco has cooled significantly. Homeowners who once enjoyed sky-high property values are now facing steep declines, while renters are finally seeing some relief in the form of lower prices.

As the tech industry struggles to adapt to the new normal, it remains to be seen how long this downward trend in housing prices will last. But for now, it’s clear that the days of exorbitant real estate prices in San Francisco are over.

  • Home for the holidays? Here’s how to binge ‘Star Wars’ shows and movies on winter break

Home for the holidays? Here’s how to binge ‘Star Wars’ shows and movies on winter break

While I don’t have the plans to go to the Death Star, I do have a plan for how you can spend your winter break: Watching all your favorite “Star Wars” content on streaming.

Here’s where you can stream all the “Star Wars” movies (in whichever order you prefer).

Where to stream all the Star Wars movies?

All of the “Star Wars” movies and TV shows can be found on Disney+ or Hulu if you have a premium subscription.

The movies can also be rented on Amazon Prime Video starting at $3.79.

Watch ‘Star Wars’ with Disney+ bundle

Can you stream the theatrical versions of the Star Wars trilogy?

For diehard fans, the versions of the original trilogy that are available on streaming are the updated versions or “Special Editions.”

The theatrical release versions for the trilogy (sometimes referred to as “Star Wars unedited”) released in 1977-1983, do not have CGI. In 1997, the films were rereleased and added more advanced audio and visual elements, including CGI.

For example, in the theatrical release of “Star Wars” (1977), which was later renamed “A New Hope,” Jabba the Hut is a man, not a giant space slug.

What is the chronological order of the Star Wars movies?

There are two ways that fans can watch the “Star Wars films” — in chronological order of the release date or chronological order of the episodes.

While watching them in episode order is fairly simple (Episode I, Episode II, Episode III, and so on), this is the order in which the “Star Wars” movies were released in theaters:

    • “Episode IV – A New Hope” (1977)

    • “Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back” (1980)

    • “Episode VI – Return of the Jedi” (1983)

    • “Episode I – The Phantom Menace” (1999)

    • “Episode II – Attack of the Clones” (2002)

    • “Episode III – Revenge of the Sith” (2005)

    • “Episode VII – The Force Awakens” (2015)

    • “Episode VIII – The Last Jedi” (2017)

    • “Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker” (2019)

How to watch Star Wars TV shows

These are all the Star Wars TV shows that are available to stream on Disney+. They are listed in the order in which they were released and next to it is roughly where the show falls in the Star Wars timeline in reference to the movies Episodes I-IX.

Some fans of the franchise may have different opinions on what order you should watch the shows in (you can find many posts online with suggestions), but at the end of the day, the shows can be watched in any order to add context to the Star Wars universe.

    • “Star Wars: Ewoks” (1985-1986) — Takes place before “Episode VI”

    • “Star Wars: The Clone Wars” (2008-2020) — Leads up to “Episode III”

    • “Star Wars: Rebels” (2014-2018) — The show takes place before the events of “Episode IV”

    • “Star Wars: The Mandalorian” (2019-Present) — Takes place after “Episode VI”

    • “Star Wars: The Bad Batch” (2021-2024) — Takes place shortly after “Episode III”

    • “Star Wars: The Book of Boba Fett” (2021-unknown)

    • “Star Wars: Andor” (2022-Present) — Takes place before “Episode IV”

    • “Star Wars: Obi-Wan Kenobi” (2022-Present) — Takes place after “Episode III”

    • “Star Wars: Ashoka” (2023-Present) — Takes place after “Episode VI”

    • “Star Wars: Young Jedi Adventures” (2023-Present) — Takes place

    • “Star Wars: Acolyte” (2024) — Takes place before any other movie

    • “Star Wars: Skeleton Crew” (2024-unknown) — Takes place after “Episode VI”

    Standalone Star Wars movies

    • “Caravan of Courage: An Ewok Adventure” (1984) — Takes place after “Episode V”

    • “Ewoks: The Battle for Endor” (1985) — Takes place after “Episode V”

    • “Star Wars: The Clone Wars” (2008) — Takes place shortly after “Episode II”

    • “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” (2015) — Takes place just before “Episode IV”

    • “Solo: A Star Wars Story” (2018) — Takes place before “Episode IV”

As the holiday season approaches, many of us will be spending more time at home with our loved ones. And what better way to relax and bond with family than by watching some ‘Star Wars’ shows and movies together?

Whether you’re a die-hard fan or just looking for some entertainment during winter break, there are plenty of ‘Star Wars’ options to choose from. From the original trilogy to the latest series like ‘The Mandalorian’, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.

Here’s a guide on how to binge ‘Star Wars’ shows and movies on winter break:

    1. Start with the original trilogy: Begin your ‘Star Wars’ marathon by watching the classic films that started it all – ‘A New Hope’, ‘The Empire Strikes Back’, and ‘Return of the Jedi’. These movies set the foundation for the entire franchise and are essential viewing for any fan.

    2. Watch the prequel trilogy: Once you’ve finished the original trilogy, move on to the prequel trilogy – ‘The Phantom Menace’, ‘Attack of the Clones’, and ‘Revenge of the Sith’. While these films have received mixed reviews, they provide important backstory and character development for the series.

    3. Explore the standalone films: After watching the two trilogies, check out the standalone films like ‘Rogue One’ and ‘Solo’. These movies offer a different perspective on the ‘Star Wars’ universe and delve into the stories of lesser-known characters.

    4. Dive into the animated series: If you’re looking for more ‘Star Wars’ content, consider watching the animated series like ‘The Clone Wars’ and ‘Rebels’. These shows expand on the lore of the franchise and introduce new characters and storylines.

    5. Catch up on ‘The Mandalorian’: Finally, don’t forget to watch the hit series ‘The Mandalorian’ on Disney+. Set in the aftermath of the fall of the Empire, this show follows the adventures of a lone bounty hunter known as Din Djarin and his adorable sidekick, Baby Yoda.

So grab some popcorn, snuggle up on the couch, and enjoy a ‘Star Wars’ marathon this winter break. May the Force be with you!
