  • AFC Champions League 2024-25: Cristiano Ronaldo ready for ACL action before 40th birthday


    Cristiano Ronaldo turns 40 on Wednesday but is showing few signs of slowing down as he prepares to lead Saudi club Al-Nassr against Al-Wasl in the Asian Football Confederation’s Champions League Elite.

    The Portuguese star, who signed for the Riyadh club in December 2022, leads the Saudi Pro League scoring charts with 15 goals in 17 games.

    If Ronaldo can reproduce that form in the continental tournament — there are two games remaining in the group stage, from which his team has already qualified — then Al-Nassr has a chance to become Asian champion for the first time.

    “The best birthday gift for Ronaldo is to achieve victory against Al-Wasl,” Al-Nassr coach Stefano Pioli said ahead of the Monday meeting. “It is an important match for us and we want the three points.”

    After winning the UEFA Champions League five times with Manchester United and Real Madrid, Ronaldo’s chances of winning a first Asian title have been bolstered with Al-Nassr’s signing of Jhon Duran from English Premier League club Aston Villa for a reported fee of around USD 79 million last week.

    According to reports in Saudi Arabia, Duran has already been registered in time to play against Al-Wasl of the United Arab Emirates. “Duran is in good shape,” Pioli said. “We will decide how best to use him.”

    The team will certainly be without former Manchester City defender Aymeric Laporte, who is absent for personal reasons. There are also injury issues for another defender, Ali Lajami, as well as Portuguese midfielder Otavio.

    Al-Nassr is in third place in the 12-team group, behind Saudi rivals Al-Hilal and Al-Ahli, both unbeaten after six games.

    Al-Hilal has won four continental titles, more than any other Asian club. The Blues have lost Neymar ahead of their match against Persepolis of Iran. Brazil’s record scorer returned to South America last week after an injury-hit spell of just seven appearances in 18 months for Al-Hilal.

    “We are looking forward to the game,” coach Jorge Jesus said. “Our ambitions are always to win at home and in Asia.”

    Al-Ahli, with former English Premier League stars such as Riyad Mahrez and Ivan Toney, has the offensive strength to win the Champions League for the first time. The Jeddah club, currently second, heads to Qatar to take on Al-Sadd.

    All 12 teams in the western zone — the tournament is split into two geographic halves until the quarterfinals — are in with a chance of finishing in the top eight and progressing to the knockout stage.

    The eastern zone resumes next week.

  • The Sims 1 and 2 Return to PC at Last Today via The Sims 25th Birthday Bundle


    EA and Maxis are celebrating the 25th anniversary of The Sims franchise with a truly excellent surprise. Today, both The Sims 1 and The Sims 2 are available on PC once again via two Legacy Collections and The Sims 25th Birthday Bundle.

    EA has announced that it’s releasing The Sims: Legacy Collection and The Sims 2: Legacy Collection today on PC. The two are available separately as well as combined for $40 in The Sims 25th Birthday Bundle.

    Both games include all expansions and almost all stuff packs, as it looks like The Sims 2: Legacy Collection is missing the IKEA Home Stuff pack from 2008. But otherwise, everything’s there. In fact, both collections include some bonus content, with The Sims 1 getting something called Throwback Fit Kit and The Sims 2 receiving a Grunge Revival Kit on top of all the other add-ons.

    EA’s re-release of the two older The Sims games marks the first time in over a decade that both gave have been readily available to play. The Sims 1 was only ever released on disc, so for years now unless you were able to track down an old physical copy and somehow make it run on a modern Windows machine, there was just no way to get ahold of it (and that doesn’t even include the expansion packs!). The Sims 2 was available more recently in 2014 via an Ultimate Collection on EA’s Origin store, but the Ultimate Collection was taken down a while ago. So unless you took advantage of it at the time, The Sims 2 remained unavailable to you unless you could similarly find a physical disc. With these two new collections, all four The Sims games are now easily purchaseable and playable again through digital storefronts.

    We gave The Sims 1 a 9.5/10 and The Sims 2 an 8.5/10 waaaaay back in the day when we first reviewed them both. While the series has added numerous new features and ironed out a lot of kinks since then, the originals are still worth checking out for their goofiness, relative simplicity, challenge, and legacy.

    The Sims: Legacy Collection and The Sims 2: Legacy Collection are both available now on Steam, the Epic Games Store, and through the EA app.

  • Defense Agency Pauses Celebrations of Martin Luther King’s Birthday, Women’s History Month and Others


    The Pentagon’s intelligence agency has paused observances of Pride Month, Black History Month, Martin Luther King’s Birthday, Holocaust Days of Remembrance, Juneteenth and other annual cultural events, as federal agencies scramble to try to conform to President Trump’s repudiation of diversity programs.

    The Defense Intelligence Agency on Tuesday published a memo to its work force with a subject line of “Pause on Special Emphasis Programs and Related Activities and Events.”

    “We are receiving questions across the work force on the way forward,” the memo said. It added that the agency would “pause all activities and events related to Agency Special Emphasis Programs effective immediately and until further notice.”

    The agency’s pause is in effect “until further notice,” the memo said. It said that the directive would not affect the observance of federal holidays, so presumably agency employees would still get Martin Luther King’s Birthday and Juneteenth off, provided they remain federal holidays.

    The pause came as Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth on Wednesday announced a new task force targeting diversity considerations in Pentagon promotions and job assignments, the latest maneuver in the Trump administration’s renunciation of “wokeness.”

    In a memo to senior Pentagon leadership, Mr. Hegseth said that diversity, equity and inclusion policies were “incompatible with the values” of the Defense Department.

    The task force must issue a final report on how to get rid of diversity programs by June 1, Mr. Hegseth said in the memo.
