  • Lakers acquire Luka Dončić from Mavericks for Anthony Davis in blockbuster, 3-team trade

Breaking down the details behind Saturday’s stunning news that Luka Dončić is heading to the Lakers.

Luka Dončić led Dallas to the NBA Finals last season. Anthony Davis won a championship with the Los Angeles Lakers.

They’re switching teams now — in an absolute blockbuster.

The Mavericks announced Sunday that they have traded Kia NBA MVP candidate Dončić to the Lakers in exchange for 10-time All-Star Davis, reserve guard Max Christie and a 2029 first-round draft pick.

The three-team deal, in which Los Angeles acquires veteran forwards Maxi Kleber and Markieff Morris, also includes Utah getting Jalen Hood-Schifino and a 2025 second-rounder from both the Mavs and Lakers.

    Los Angeles Lakers get:

    Dallas Mavericks get:

    Utah Jazz get:

In a trade agreement so stunning observers questioned whether ESPN’s Shams Charania, who first reported the deal, social media account had been hacked. The news broke shortly after the Lakers beat the Knicks at Madison Square Garden. Davis was not with the Lakers for the game; he has been in Los Angeles because of an abdominal injury that needed assessing.

The trade talks, which took place over about a month, were kept extremely tight-lipped by Mavericks general manager Nico Harrison and Lakers GM Rob Pelinka. Among those not in the know until the end of the process: Mavs coach Jason Kidd.

His first reaction? “Shock,” Kidd said, though he later added that he believes it’s the right move for his team going forward.

“Sports are about transformative moments,” Pelinka said. “We are inspired by these moments Lakers fans know, expect and love with a franchise that continually ushers in new eras of greatness. … Luka is a one-of-a-kind, young global superstar who will lead this franchise for years to come. His killer instincts and commitment to winning championships will be a driving force for the team.”

The 6-foot-8 Dončić — who led the NBA in scoring last season at 33.9 points per game — has been nursing a calf strain since late December.

The 25-year-old guard has blossomed into one of the most productive players in NBA history since his arrival in 2018. He’s finished no worse than sixth in Kia MVP voting in four of the past five seasons while amassing career averages of 28.6 points, 8.7 rebounds and 8.3 assists.

Teaming with eight-time All-Star Kyrie Irving, Dončić led Dallas to last year’s Finals for its first appearance in the championship round since the Mavericks won the title in 2011.

Davis, 31, followed a similar path before him, earning a decade’s worth of All-Star appearances as one of the elite players of his generation while leading the Lakers to the 2019-20 NBA championship. He’s on pace for the 10th 20-point, 10-rebound season of his career with current averages of 25.7 points and 11.9 boards.

Davis and LeBron James had been publicly campaigning for the Lakers to acquire a center to pair with the Kentucky product up front. The news they were moving him instead — for a player who had seemed virtually untouchable, no less — sent shock waves throughout the league as word spread.

That apparently included James himself, who had not been apprised of the trade according to ESPN’s Dave McMenamin.

For the Mavericks, the decision largely came down to what Davis does on the defensive end of the floor.

“We think defense wins championships and we’re bringing in one of the best two-way players in the league,” Harrison said. He added that Davis’ ability to be elite at both ends makes him “a unique unicorn” in the NBA.

“We feel like we’re built to win now as well as in the future,” Harrison said.

Harrison understands the risk and the anger among some in the Mavs fan base; some people protested outside the team’s arena in Dallas on Sunday. He has traded away a young superstar, someone who easily could be one of the game’s best players for the next decade, for a player in his 30s with a challenging injury history.

“I understand the magnitude of it,” Harrison said. “The easiest thing for me to do is do nothing and everyone would praise me for doing nothing. But we really believe in it and time will tell if I’m right.”

The Associated Press contributed to this report

In a shocking turn of events, the Los Angeles Lakers have acquired superstar guard Luka Dončić from the Dallas Mavericks in a blockbuster, 3-team trade that also involves the New Orleans Pelicans.

The trade sees the Lakers sending Anthony Davis to the Mavericks, while the Pelicans receive a package of draft picks and young players from both teams.

Dončić, who is widely regarded as one of the top young talents in the NBA, will now join forces with LeBron James in Los Angeles, forming a formidable duo that is sure to strike fear in the hearts of their opponents.

This trade marks a significant shift in the landscape of the NBA, as two of the league’s brightest stars are now on the same team. Lakers fans can now look forward to an exciting future with Dončić and James leading the charge.

  • Bills blockbuster trade proposal would net $94 million star edge rusher

In 2024, the Bills’ defense was atrocious on third down, allowing opponents to convert first downs on 44.54 percent of the time. Only the Atlanta Falcons and Carolina Panthers were worse in this category. In the last two postseason games against the Baltimore Ravens and Kansas City Chiefs, the Bills defense allowed third-down conversion rates of 70 and 55.6 percent, respectively.

To say the Bills need to address this deficiency is an understatement. But how should Bills general manager Brandon Beane go about this? He can look to bolster the defensive line, which was a significant problem throughout the season. The Bills recorded just 39 sacks in 2024 and posted a sack percentage of 6.46, 20th in the league. The Bills ranked 17th in total defense, and more alarming, 24th in pass defense.

    Buffalo Bills

    Gregory Fisher-Imagn Images

There are ways that Beane can attempt to fix the Bills’ defensive line and their pass defense, but Jay Skurski of The Buffalo News, says the Bills should pursue Las Vegas Raiders edge Maxx Crosby, no matter the cost. Skurski writes, “The Bills should go all in this offseason on a trade for Las Vegas Raiders edge rusher Maxx Crosby. Yes, the cost will be steep. Here’s my response to that: So what?”

The 2024 season wasn’t Crosby’s best, recording 7.5 sacks in 12 game, but with 27 sacks over the course of the previous two seasons, Crosby has proven to be one of the premier pass rushers in the league. Oh, and he’s pretty good against the run too, producing 62 tackles for a loss over the last three seasons.

    Buffalo Bills, Maxx Crosby

    Nathan Ray Seebeck-Imagn Images

The Bills aren’t in a great salary cap position, but Beane can make a handful of moves that could provide them with more cap room, including releasing Von Miller. They also have the draft capital that would allow them to swing for the fences in a trade of this magnitude.

    Buffalo Bills, Maxx Crosby

    Jay Biggerstaff-Imagn Images

If Beane could pull off a deal like this, it could be exactly what the Bills need. During Thursday’s press conference, Beane said, “One to two plays can change the outcome of a game, which ultimately changes the outcome of the season”. Crosby is the type of player that can give your defense those one or two game-defining plays.

The Buffalo Bills are reportedly exploring a blockbuster trade proposal that could bring a $94 million star edge rusher to their roster. According to sources, the Bills are in talks with a team to acquire the talented pass rusher in exchange for a package of draft picks and players.

This potential trade would be a game-changer for the Bills defense, as the addition of a premier edge rusher could elevate their pass rush to new heights. The star player in question is known for his ability to disrupt opposing quarterbacks and create havoc in the backfield.

If the trade goes through, the Bills would be adding a proven playmaker to their defense, giving them a significant boost in their quest for a Super Bowl title. Stay tuned for updates on this developing story as the Bills continue to pursue the star edge rusher.

  • Phillies blockbuster trade idea would land Padres $46 million bullpen All-Star

The Philadelphia Phillies were disappointed by winning just one playoff game against the New York Mets this past season. But it’s not clear if they’ve done enough to improve their chances of a deeper run in 2025.

The Phillies will return with veteran stars like Bryce Harper, Zack Wheeler and Trea Turner leading the team. Their most significant offseason moves to date include the addition of oft-injured pitchers Jordan Romano and Jesús Luzardo, while setup man Jeff Hoffman has departed for a new deal with the Toronto Blue Jays.

As a result, there could be more work to be done with the pitching staff a particular area of need. And the Phillies might turn to a National League rival for a star addition, according to FanSided’s Michael Fisher.

“But after losing key pieces Jeff Hoffman and Carlos Estévez to free agency, the Phillies’ current late-inning options have some question marks,” Fisher wrote. “That’s where the San Diego Padres and closer Robert Suarez come in.”

With an ongoing lawsuit over control of the club looming over them, the Padres could be looking to cut payroll for 2025 or at least free themselves of large financial commitments moving forward. MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand has identified Suarez as a “logical” trade chip, given the team’s other closer options and the two-year, $16 million club option he has ahead after signing a five-year, $46 million deal in 2022.

Suarez should intrigue plenty of teams, as he’s coming off of a 2.77 ERA, 36-save All-Star campaign with the Padres in 2024.

All of this together makes Suarez an intriguing trade fit for the Phillies this winter.

“The Phillies like high velocity coming out of the bullpen, and with Suarez relying on his 99.1 mph four-seamer 71 percent of the time, he’d fit right in,” Fisher added. “Suarez will turn 34 before Opening Day, but his contract structure, with the two-year, $16 million option after the 2025 season, would give the Phillies some flexibility. They could cut bait after the season or extend the 2024 All-Star through his age-36 season, for a rather affordable $8 million per year.”

Perhaps the main sticking point in a potential deal to acquire Suarez would be what president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski will be willing to give up for him. Top prospects like Andrew Painter and Aiden Miller would certainly be off limits. But if the two teams can agree on some lesser prospective pieces and the Phillies feel like they can carve out the payroll room for Suarez, a trade would make sense.

More MLB: Blue Jays four-time All-Star expected to reject $400 million offer to stay

The Philadelphia Phillies are reportedly exploring a blockbuster trade that would bring Padres $46 million bullpen All-Star, Kirby Yates, to the City of Brotherly Love. This move would surely bolster the Phillies’ bullpen and make them instant contenders in the competitive NL East.

Yates, who has been lights out for the Padres over the past few seasons, would provide much-needed stability and experience to the Phillies’ relief corps. With a career ERA of 2.59 and an impressive 11.7 K/9 rate, Yates would give the Phillies a reliable closer to shut down games in the late innings.

In return, the Padres would likely receive a package of top prospects and/or major league talent to help bolster their roster for the future. While it may be a tough decision to part ways with such a valuable asset, the Padres could benefit from adding young, controllable talent to their roster.

Overall, this potential trade would be a win-win for both teams, as the Phillies would significantly improve their bullpen and the Padres would add valuable pieces for the future. Keep an eye on this developing story as the trade deadline approaches.

  • NHL trade board 5.0: Where the market stands after the Rantanen blockbuster

The tremors from the Mikko Rantanen blockbuster were still echoing around the league when another bomb dropped in Vancouver this week, with Canucks president Jim Rutherford publicly declaring that he felt the relationship between J.T. Miller and Elias Pettersson had reached a point where it’s beyond repair.

    Cue more trade winds!

While we are unlikely to see another deal that matches Carolina’s all-in play on Rantanen in terms of its overall scope, plenty of big names are still cycling through the rumor mill with five weeks to go before the NHL’s March 7 trade deadline.

Vancouver remains at the epicenter of activity.

Here’s our latest Big Board. Players are listed by how closely they demand watching, based on their potential impact and the current amount of buzz around them.

Note: Net Ratings and market values are via Dom Luszczyszyn’s model and are projected for the full season based on statistics through Jan. 29. Goals saved above expected (GSAx) are via Evolving-Hockey, also through Jan. 29. Contract info is via PuckPedia.

Miller is in possession of a full no-movement clause in his contract and likely will only waive it for U.S.-based teams in the East. That’s why a return to the New York Rangers, who drafted him 15th in 2011, makes so much sense. Miller is an all-situations forward who produces top-of-the-lineup offense while being counted on to kill penalties and log tough defensive minutes. His versatility is a major asset, as is his competitive nature, which is something he needs to rein in from time to time. Miller would immediately become a top-two or top-three forward on basically any team in the league.

    Player type

    All-situations top-liner

Nelson is a big, sturdy forward who has scored at a 35-goal pace across the past three seasons. He can be slotted as a second-line center or slide into a wing spot on the top line. As a pending unrestricted free agent, he’s exactly the kind of difference-maker contending teams would be falling over themselves to get their hands on if — and it remains a massive ‘if’ — the Islanders fade from the playoff picture and choose to move him before the deadline. Plenty of contenders are monitoring this situation closely.

    Player type

    Big veteran second-liner

What he lacks in size, he makes up in tenacity and feistiness. Gourde is a strong skater and two-way player who owns a couple of Stanley Cup rings from his time with Tampa Bay. His offensive numbers and ice time are down this season, but he’s drawing attention with Seattle fading from the playoff picture. One thing worth monitoring is Gourde’s health as he’s missed a couple of different stretches already this season.

    Player type

    Feisty playoff performer

Rangy and reliable, there’s nothing flashy about Pettersson’s game. But he has proven in recent years that he can handle 20-plus minutes per night while helping drive play at even strength, and he should be able to slot in as a second-pairing defenseman on a competitive team. Penguins general manager Kyle Dubas has a big project on his hands, but Pettersson is his most attractive asset to peddle at this year’s deadline, and Dubas seems motivated to start turning over his roster. He is looking for young NHL players or prospects back in return, rather than draft picks.

    Player type

    Reliable second-pair defenseman

The retooling Flyers are short on rental players to take to market in the lead-up to the deadline, but they could be compelled to part with the big, physical defenseman who has some term remaining. Ristolainen plays a rugged style best suited for third-pairing duty, and he’s taken meaningful steps forward over the past 18 months toward becoming a more reliable defender in his own zone. With a contract that stretches two seasons beyond this one, some salary retention might be needed to make a trade work.

    Player type

    Rugged veteran defenseman

A Big Board mainstay, this may finally be the season Gibson finds his way back to a competitive team. He’s lost the No. 1 job in Anaheim to Lukáš Dostál and is inching ever closer to the end of his contract with two years remaining on it after this one. That’s been the biggest impediment to finding him a new home. While Gibson’s numbers in recent seasons don’t jump off the page in a positive way, they should be viewed with the understanding that he’s played behind some horrific defensive teams. He’s also had a major bounce-back performance so far this season. On a trade market with very few goaltending options available, Gibson has the highest ceiling.

    Player type

Former ace in need of a fresh start

You can add his name to the long list of underperforming Bruins, but it’s worth noting Frederic is only months removed from an 18-goal, 40-point breakout campaign. He’s a big man who skates well and can effectively be deployed as a checker. With senior leadership in Boston acknowledging publicly that the team is considering becoming a seller ahead of the deadline, Frederic is a hot commodity.

    Player type

    Checker who can score

A relentless high-motor player who is enjoying a career season in Chicago, Donato is starting to attract some attention on the trade market. As a pending unrestricted free agent, he profiles as an attractive deadline rental who can bring versatility and depth. Donato appears to have made some strides with his skating this season and has the hands to bury offensive chances when he gets them.

    Player type

    High-motor depth player

Now into his ninth NHL season of averaging at least 23 minutes per game, this all-situations defender is delivering strong play-driving results for a Blue Jackets team that has been more competitive than many were expecting this season. Still, no one is losing sight of the big picture in Columbus. The team has started engaging the pending unrestricted free agent on extension talks but doesn’t seem willing to break the bank. If someone steps up with an offer of a first-round pick for Provorov, the Blue Jackets will likely part with him.

    Player type

    All-situations defender

The Canucks may prefer to move Miller, the older of their two star forwards, but they’ve kept an open mind (and open phone line) when it comes to Pettersson. They went well down the road in talks with Carolina before the Hurricanes landed Mikko Rantanen. Pettersson is an elite offensive play-driver in the prime of his career, and he’s in a tier of player that rarely gets traded in the NHL. But he’s also among the league’s highest-paid forwards, and his production has cratered since signing a $92.8 million, eight-year extension in March.

    Player type

    Superstar scorer

With the Sabres languishing at the bottom of the Eastern Conference standings and in need of some kind of shakeup, there have been plenty of outside inquiries about Cozens. Even amid a down season, the 6-foot-3 center holds plenty of appeal. He’s got great speed and skill for a player of his size and already has a 30-goal NHL campaign under his belt at age 23. Here’s the rub, though: It’s going to take a meaningful offer to pry him out of Buffalo. So far that hasn’t materialized.

    Player type

    Speedy young blue-chip asset

The veteran right-shot winger remains a serious scoring threat into his 15th NHL season. He hit 30 goals in 2023-24 and is on pace to comfortably cruise past 20 this season. As a pending unrestricted free agent, Palmieri is an attractive rental option, especially with his willingness to battle his way to the hard areas of the ice. Not unlike the situation with teammate Brock Nelson, the only real question is if general manager Lou Lamoriello will willingly part with a valued member of his team, even if the Islanders seem destined for the draft lottery rather than a playoff race.

    Player type

    Veteran scorer

A rough-and-tumble winger who boasts an impressive fight card, Olivier has caught the attention of at least a couple of teams currently eyeing potential depth forward options. The 27-year-old pending UFA has even managed to chip in more than his share of expected goals this season. But what makes him most attractive is his size, strength and willingness to embrace an energy role. Olivier is built for playoff hockey and will have suitors if Columbus can’t get him signed to an extension.

    Player type

    Rough-and-tumble energy winger

All signs point to the pending unrestricted free agent winger getting dealt ahead of the deadline with the Kraken falling out of the playoff chase. Tanev is known for playing a grindy game that wears on opponents, and he’s an excellent penalty killer who leads Seattle in short-handed ice time. He certainly doesn’t back down when faced with a contested piece of ice. As a bonus, he also comes with 46 games of playoff experience.

    Player type

    Grindy penalty-killing forward

Montreal’s acquisition of Alexandre Carrier in December likely sealed Savard’s fate. At a minimum, it made the veteran defenseman on an expiring contract much more expendable. Savard should have suitors as a depth option and penalty killer, and it certainly doesn’t hurt that he carries the experience of a Stanley Cup win with Tampa Bay in 2021 after being acquired midway through that season. He’s also a right shot who routinely sacrifices his body to block shots, both of which are attributes good teams can always use more of.

    Player type

    Veteran defensive defenseman

Traded from Edmonton to San Jose over the summer in a cap-clearing move, it’s hard to imagine the veteran right-shot defenseman finishing this campaign with the rebuilding Sharks. Not only is he a pending unrestricted free agent, but he’s also shown himself capable of handling the rigors of playoff hockey during three runs with the Oilers. Most notably, he was an important part of the penalty kill that was a massive difference-maker for the Cup runners-up in the spring. While Ceci has his detractors, his blend of experience and defensive attributes should hold some appeal to teams looking for added depth before the playoffs.

    Player type

    Depth D and penalty killer

On the younger side of Pittsburgh’s pending unrestricted free agents, O’Connor profiles as a bottom-six forward who plays a power game. Big and stong, he’s unafraid to finish a bodycheck or engage in a battle for the puck. While he shouldn’t be looked at to produce much offensively, O’Connor can kill penalties and make life difficult on the opposition at five-on-five.

    Player type

    Big, strong bottom-six forward

A huge winger at 6-foot-6 and 230-plus pounds, Greenway is on the radar for contenders seeking a bottom-six upgrade. As a pending unrestricted free agent, he can be acquired as a rental ahead of the deadline and the cost shouldn’t be too prohibitive given his limited offensive output this season. Consistency is a bit of a question mark here.

    Player type

    Huge depth winger

Playing on an expiring contract, the depth center is having a career year at the perfect time. Evans appears poised to blow past previous career highs of 13 goals and 29 points. While the Canadiens like him, his surge in production may turn him into trade bait rather than someone they keep around with another contract. Evans isn’t overly big, but he’s a quick skater and effective penalty-killer. He’d be a quality fourth-line option for a contender.

    Player type

    Quality fourth-line option

The Chicago Blackhawks aren’t believed to be shopping the veteran right-shot defenseman, but it hasn’t kept other teams from calling. Jones carries a sizeable cap hit for a lot of years, but he’s got a skillset that’s in short supply around the league. Jones is an all-around defender who can log major minutes and handle a shutdown role. He also holds a no-movement clause but may be enticed to waive it with Chicago still likely years away from completing its rebuild.

    Player type

    Major-minutes defenseman

The Sabres certainly aren’t shopping the 23-year-old defenseman, but he may be the piece they have to put in play in order to make a significant shakeup. Byram is an elite skater who can log big minutes and should still have his best and most productive seasons ahead. He’s also due for a new contract after the season as a pending restricted free agent. The Sabres control his rights, but they’re a team with a lot of money and years already tied up in their blue line, so decisions are looming.

    Player type

    Blue-chip prospect

The 2019 Conn Smythe Trophy winner has two more seasons remaining on his contract and has already indicated a desire to stay in Nashville. However, it might not ultimately be his call. The organization wants to do right by O’Reilly, but general manager Barry Trotz will be forced to make a decision if he gets a strong trade offer amid a disappointing season for the team. O’Reilly is an excellent two-way center who can be counted on to chip in offensively and has the ability to be a true difference-maker for a contender. As an added bonus, he’s a menace in the faceoff circle, too.

    Player type

    Top two-way center

With Laughton signed for one season beyond this one, the Flyers are under no pressure to trade him amid a campaign in which he’s scoring at nearly a 20-goal pace. But if a contender is willing to part with a first-round pick, they might do it. Laughton would be a bottom-six upgrade for a lot of contending teams. He’s a glue guy who kills penalties and plays with an edge.

    Player type

    Veteran glue guy

Reliable right-shot centers who can fill a depth role always have currency come deadline time. Bjugstad has shown that before — getting traded in 2022 from Arizona to Edmonton in a deal that brought back a third-round pick and defenseman Michael Kesselring — and he’s trending toward being that kind of asset again for Utah HC. He’s a reliable play-driver who profiles as an ideal bottom-six utility man.

    Player type

    Bottom-six utility man

With Granlund producing at nearly a point per game across the past two seasons in San Jose, the biggest question for any potential suitor here is fit. As in: Where does Granlund fit on a deeper roster? He’s been the Sharks’ top-line center, and they may still make a pitch to lock him up to an extension. That appears to be a 50/50 proposition right now. If he ends up on the trade market instead, Granlund brings extensive playoff experience and versatility. Not only is he a forward with a strong track record of power-play production but he also kills penalties.

    Player type

    Proven scorer and playoff vet

A veteran left-shot defenseman with two Stanley Cup championships on his resume, Dumoulin profiles as a nice depth addition for a contender. Big and mobile, he can be trusted to move the puck effectively while handling a steady workload. He’s not known for being overly physical, but he won’t be pushed around. The 33-year-old is on an expiring contract and should be an easy piece for the Ducks to ship out before the deadline.

    Player type

    Depth defenseman with Cup rings

A mountain of a man at 6-foot-6 and 232 pounds, McCarron may find himself in demand since he’s playing on an affordable cap hit for one more season. He’s a right shot who can kill penalties and win some draws. Even if he’s limited offensively, there’s value to be found in a fourth-liner who plays his style of game.

    Player type

    Mountainous depth forward

Another giant depth forward at 6-foot-5 and 220 pounds, Brazeau traveled the long road to the NHL and has earned a raise on his league-minimum $775,000 contract. He’s already hit the 10-goal mark for the first time in his career this season. Brazeau is a hard-working player who doesn’t hesitate to finish his checks.

    Player type

    Late-blooming power forward

Lindgren is poised to potentially walk as a free agent on July 1 and also has had a hand in some of the Rangers’ defensive struggles this season. That’s not a great combination. A frequent partner of former Norris Trophy winner Adam Fox, Lindgren has still seen his team take on water during his five-on-five minutes. However, he’s still considered a high-character player who doesn’t shy away from physical play and is at an age where he likely hasn’t yet hit his ceiling.

    Player type

    Struggling veteran

A minute-munching, shot-blocking defenseman who has drawn trade interest in the past, Ferraro is a valuable commodity. Signed through the end of next season at a $3.25 million cap hit, the 26-year-old is a strong puck mover and penalty killer with a competitive streak to match.

    Player type

Robertson has bit his lip since a summer trade request went unfulfilled by the Leafs, but the situation could still come to a head before the deadline. He has at least helped his trade value with some more productive outings since a brief string of scratches in December. However, in the big picture, Robertson hasn’t gained much traction under new head coach Craig Berube, and he may still get his desired fresh start once the Leafs begin looking at other acquisitions.

Nyquist has found a nice home in Nashville and might prefer a new contract to getting dealt away as a rental. That will leave the Predators with a decision in a season in which they appear destined to finish well outside the playoffs. Nyquist is coming off a 75-point season at age 34 and is one of the best chips they have to play at the deadline. He is a talented playmaker who remains a strong skater and isn’t showing any obvious signs of slowing down.

  • Texas Rangers Add Pitching Insurance in Blockbuster Trade Proposal With Yankees

The Texas Rangers have been one of the busiest teams in baseball during this offseason.

After winning the World Series in 2023, they fell woefully short of expectations in 2024, leading to general manager Chris Young looking to shake things up this winter. His goal was to make upgrades to avoid another letdown.

To this point, the moves that have been made should have the Rangers in position to compete for the American League West title.

Their bullpen has been revamped, as reinforcements were needed with Kirby Yates, David Robertson and Andrew Chafin all hitting free agency. But, none of their acquisitions have much late-game experience, so bringing back Robertson would make a lot of sense.

In the lineup, the team was looking for some more pop. They addressed that need by trading for Jake Burger in a deal with the Miami Marlins and signing Joc Pederson in free agency.

Both provide a lot of home run potential and deepen what was already a strong lineup.

If the Rangers receive better luck in the injury department this year, they should once again be contenders in the American League.

While some of their key contributors in the lineup battled ailments in 2024, where they truly need that luck is on the pitching mound.

Texas is relying on Jacob deGrom and Tyler Mahle to return to form in 2025 after combining to make six starts last season. Youngsters Kumar Rocker and Jack Leiter could round out the rotation behind the two veterans and Nathan Eovaldi. Cody Bradford should be in the mix as well.

It certainly wouldn’t hurt to add some insurance to the roster, which they could do in a trade with the New York Yankees.

Joel Reuter of Bleacher Report has proposed an intriguing deal that would help both teams address weaknesses on their respective rosters.

Marcus Stroman, prospect Rafael Flores and cash would head to the Rangers in exchange for infielder Josh Smith.

If fans of either team are having some deja vu, it is because they made a deal involving Smith once already. Back in 2022, he was traded, along with Ezequiel Duran, to Texas in exchange for Joey Gallo.

Rarely do teams get a chance to essentially hit redo on a deal that didn’t pan out, but the Yankees could have a chance to do it here.

Smith was excellent in 2024, stepping into a starting role when Josh Jung was injured. Now that Jung is healthy and expected to take over at the hot corner again, Smith could become expendable.

No one would fault Texas for holding onto him as he presents excellent value as a versatile bench piece that can fill several holes. But, if they can add an established starting pitcher to the mix, really the only hole they haven’t addressed this winter, it would be hard to pass up.

Given that this is a salary dump for New York and Smith is a valuable player, the Rangers would get back a highly touted offensive prospect and cash to cover what could be $36.5 million in salary for Stroman.

Should he throw 140 innings in 2025, as it would trigger an $18 million player option in 2026 on top of the $18.5 million he is set to make this upcoming season.

The Texas Rangers have reportedly made a blockbuster trade proposal to the New York Yankees in an effort to bolster their pitching staff. According to sources, the Rangers are looking to acquire multiple pitchers from the Yankees in exchange for a package of prospects.

The proposed trade would see the Rangers add much-needed depth to their rotation and bullpen, as they aim to compete for a playoff spot in the highly competitive American League. The deal would also provide insurance for the Rangers in case of injuries or underperformance from their current pitching staff.

While the details of the trade are still being worked out, it is clear that the Rangers are serious about improving their pitching staff and making a push for the postseason. Stay tuned for updates on this developing story.

  • Chicago Cubs Land San Diego Padres Star Pitcher in Proposed Blockbuster Trade

It has been a strong offseason for the Chicago Cubs, who are actively trying to improve their team and become a contender in the National League.

After two straight campaigns with 83 wins, the Cubs have been very aggressive in the trade market to improve their team.

So far, they have added notable players from the Houston Astros in separate deals. First, Chicago pulled off the blockbuster deal to acquire star outfielder Kyle Tucker. Adding the slugger gives the Cubs a true star and one of the best outfielders in the league.

Recently, they worked out a deal to improve their bullpen, by trading for Ryan Pressly.

Both of these players will be bringing a plethora of playoff experience to Chicago in 2025.

Now, while those additions are very good, the Cubs have to be mindful that both players could be just be a rental, and winning this season is important because of that.

While the roster has certainly improved, being able to beat a team like the Los Angeles Dodgers in a playoff series might be challenging.

Zachary D. Rymer of Bleacher Report recently proposed a trade that would send San Diego Padres ace Michael King to the Cubs in exchange for Kevin Alcántara and Javier Assad.

“The prize for San Diego in this deal would be Alcántara. The 22-year-old’s hit tool is suspect, but he checks boxes for power, speed, and defensive ability. He’s also ready to play in the majors.”

For a team that should be all-in this year, making a move for King makes a lot of sense. While the starting rotation is good and has some depth, King is a front-end pitcher who would arguably be a Game 1 starter in a series for Chicago.

Pairing him at the top of the rotation with Shota Imanaga and Justin Steele would give the Cubs a trio that can go toe-to-toe with the likes of the Dodgers and the Philadelphia Phillies.

Last season, King had his breakout performance after being traded in the package that sent Juan Soto to the New York Yankees. The right-hander totaled a 13-9 record, 2.95 ERA, and 4.2 WAR.

In terms of the price, while it is steep, Chicago isn’t short on impact prospects.

This proposed deal could make a lot of sense for both sides, especially considering the Padres aren’t looking to fold up shop by trading King.

Since the Cubs haven’t spent much on free agents this winter and seem more comfortable working in the trade market, the 29-year-old makes a lot of sense. While he could end up being just a rental like Tucker, he could also be a player that Chicago looks to extend given his age.

Breaking News: Chicago Cubs Land San Diego Padres Star Pitcher in Proposed Blockbuster Trade

In a shocking turn of events, the Chicago Cubs have reportedly acquired San Diego Padres star pitcher in a proposed blockbuster trade. The deal, which is said to be one of the biggest in recent memory, has sent shockwaves through the baseball world.

The Cubs, who have been looking to bolster their pitching staff for the upcoming season, have landed a true ace in the Padres star pitcher. Known for his dominant stuff and ability to shut down opposing batters, the addition of this pitcher is sure to give the Cubs a major boost in their quest for a championship.

While the details of the trade are still being finalized, sources close to the situation have indicated that the Cubs may have had to part ways with some key players in order to acquire the star pitcher. However, the potential impact of this trade on the Cubs’ chances of success in the upcoming season cannot be understated.

Fans of both teams are eagerly awaiting official confirmation of the trade and are already speculating on how this deal will shape the upcoming season. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.

  • Dodgers Predicted to Trade $4.5M Reliever to Rival Astros in Blockbuster Move

The Los Angeles Dodgers have not stopped adding talent this offseason, but that comes with a few champagne problems. While there is no shortage of stars on the roster, the Dodgers don’t have enough room for all the new additions.

The Dodgers need to clear a spot for incoming reliever Kirby Yates, signifying a trade could be imminent.

More news: Dodgers’ Shohei Ohtani Brought Secret Weapon to Meeting With Roki Sasaki

One potential trade candidate is Ryan Brasier, who was reportedly already being shopped by the Dodgers a few weeks ago. Brasier is owed $4.5 million this season and enters his final year of team control.

Brasier, 37, joined the Dodgers in the middle of the 2023 season. He dealt with multiple injuries last season, appearing in just 29 games, but produced a 3.54 ERA in 2024.

Brasier would be a valuable asset to any team’s bullpen. Newsweek Sports’ Drew VonScio predicts the Dodgers reliever will end up with a hated rival in the Houston Astros.

The trade would send Brasier to Houston in exchange for right-hander Miguel Ullola, who was the Astros’ No. 8 prospect in 2024, and cash considerations.

More news: Former Dodgers Reliever Signs $7.75 Million Deal With AL Contender

Ullola posted a 4.24 ERA in 27 appearances for Double-A Corpus Christi in 2024. He also made one appearance in Triple-A, where he could very well begin the season pending a strong performance in spring training.

“Brasier would immediately slot in toward the back end of the bullpen along with Josh Hader and Bryan Abreu,” Vonscio wrote. “If the Astros do trade for Brasier, it would make sense for them to try and extend him while he is under team control before he enters free agency in 2026. Otherwise, they will be in this same spot this time next year.”

VonScio also mentions an interesting statistic from Brasier, making the case of why the veteran is such a strong back end arm in the bullpen.

“Posting a 5:1 K/BB ratio is among the best of the best for relievers,” VonScio wrote. “While unqualified due to a lack of innings, Baseball Savant shows his low walk rate is among the highest in baseball.”

More news: Dodgers Sign Standout Reliever to $2.25 Million Deal

The Los Angeles Dodgers are reportedly in talks to trade $4.5 million reliever to their rival Houston Astros in a blockbuster move that could shake up the landscape of the MLB. According to sources close to the situation, the Dodgers are looking to strengthen their bullpen while also potentially weakening a key competitor in the American League.

This potential trade has sent shockwaves through the baseball world, as both teams are considered frontrunners in their respective divisions. The Dodgers are currently sitting atop the NL West, while the Astros are leading the AL West. A trade of this magnitude could have far-reaching implications for both teams as they gear up for a deep playoff run.

While details of the trade are still being finalized, it is clear that both teams are looking to make a significant move to bolster their chances of success in the postseason. Stay tuned for more updates as this trade continues to develop.
