Hate it or love it, a winter storm is on the way this weekend. Prepare for the storm, but please don’t panic. It would be so much easier if we were just getting pure snow, but it becomes far more complicated when you add sleet and freezing rain into the equation. Let me walk you through this hour by hour so you know when to expect the worst. Start time is Sunday morning from 7 am – 10 am with an initial band of snow.

    wx1.png

As we approach 12 pm on Sunday, Louisville begins to rock back and forth between sleet and snow. We refer to this as sleet contamination because the sleet really cuts back and eats away at snow potential. Remember, sleet is an ice pellet that refreezes before reaching the ground and bounces off the surface.

    wx2.png

At 4 pm the worst of all precipitation types takes over. Freezing rain will last through Sunday night, but the intensity will vary. That’s important. Ice accretion is actually easier when the precipitation is lighter. When the rain is heavier much of it runs off without freezing on contact.

    wx3.png

Look at the map below. The variety of precipitation types from north to south will be huge. Sleet/snow will be the dominant precipitation type to the north at 8 pm. I wouldn’t be surprised if we get reports of thundersleet! It’s still heavy freezing rain in Louisville. Freezing rain/plain rain will continue south and you may even hear rumbles of thunder and see flashes of lightning due to the instability.

    wx4.png

As the night wears on, the precipitation type remains in the same exact zones, however, it becomes lighter after 2 am which allows the ice to build up on trees and power lines. The winds also begin to get stronger as gusts range from 30- 35 mph. That combination is not good when in comes to keeping the lights on. You need to have a plan in case you lose power because we may not get above freezing for 125 to 150 hours.

    wx5.png

Just to be clear, scattered to numerous power outages are possible, especially in areas where the lines are above ground. Around 7 am Monday is when we switch from the wintry mix back over to pure snow. Don’t forget that a layer of ice will be hiding beneath the snow.

    wx6.png

Several hours of moderate snow will last through the morning and into the early afternoon. My suggestion is avoid shoveling until after the storm ends. The initial wave of snow/sleet may act like a barrier preventing the freezing rain from turning everything into a sheet of ice.

    wx7.png

Finally, we bring this to an end by 4 pm Monday as the snow becomes lighter before completely pulling away. Listen, I know all of this can be extremely nerve-racking and cause anxiety. Our goal at WDRB is to give you the most accurate forecast to help keep your family safe.

    wx8.png

Here’s what we have as of this update at 11 pm Friday. Pick out your location on the map and follow the legend to see the range in your location. Please don’t just look at the top number. Full disclaimer, there’s so much liquid and so much energy with this dymanic storm that these numbers are going to change. Keep chekcing back with us all weekend for updated snow and ice totals!

As we head into the weekend, a winter storm is on the horizon, bringing with it a mix of snow, sleet, and freezing rain. But when can we expect this wintry mix to arrive?

According to the latest forecast models, the storm is expected to start impacting our area late Friday night into Saturday morning. Snow and sleet will be the primary precipitation types at the onset of the storm, with the potential for a transition to freezing rain as temperatures warm up slightly.

The heaviest precipitation is expected to fall during the day on Saturday, with snow accumulations likely in the higher elevations and sleet and freezing rain possible in the lower elevations. Travel could be hazardous during this time, so it’s important to stay updated on the latest road conditions and travel advisories.

By Sunday morning, the storm is expected to start winding down, with lingering snow showers and icy conditions possible. It’s important to exercise caution when traveling, as roads and sidewalks may still be slick and icy.

As always, stay tuned to your local weather forecast for the latest updates on this weekend storm. Stay safe and stay warm!

Captain Jasprit Bumrah has given India a glimmer of hope of retaining the Border-Gavaskar Trophy following the dramatic dismissal of Australian opener Usman Khawaja on the final delivery of day one at the SCG.

The hosts were in complete control of the New Year’s Test after bowling out India for 185 in 72.2 overs, with Australia’s openers tasked with surviving three overs during a tricky passage of play before stumps.

However, umpires were forced to intervene when Bumrah became embroiled in a tense war of words with Australian opener Sam Konstas at the non-striker’s end during the last over of the day.

In a late twist, Khawaja edged the final delivery of the day towards KL Rahul at second slip, at which point Bumrah immediately spun around and glared at Konstas as his teammates celebrated the late breakthrough.

Australia is 1-9 at stumps on day one, with Konstas unbeaten on 7, still trailing by 176 runs.

Earlier on Friday, Scott Boland claimed four wickets, including his 50th Test scalp, to rip through India’s middle order before fellow quick Mitchell Starc (3-49 from 18 overs) helped clean up the tail. The Victorian seamer finished with 4-31 from 20 overs, his best bowling figures since his unforgettable Test debut at the MCG in 2021.

Smith gives it to Gill after brainfade | 00:49

None of India’s players reached fifty, while boundaries proved difficult to come by as the tourists ticked along at around two runs per over throughout the day.

The opening day was marred by a couple of contentious decisions from third umpire Joel Wilson, with Snicko technology once again in the spotlight, while the Australians dropped chances against all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja on 3 and 5.

Having taken over the captaincy from axed skipper Rohit Sharma, Bumrah walked out donning the navy jacket on Friday morning, opting to bat first after winning the toss.

Indian opener KL Rahul survived five overs on the soft wicket before flicking a half-volley on leg stump from the wounded quick Mitchell Starc towards square leg, where Konstas accepted a regulation chance.

    “Something there” – Review successful! | 02:50

Introduced to the attack in the eighth over, Boland only needed four deliveries to unearth a breakthrough, with opener Yashasvi Jaiswal nicking towards the slips cordon where Australian debutant Beau Webster snaffled his maiden Test catch.

Controversy erupted the following delivery when Indian superstar Kohli edged to a lunging Steve Smith at second slip, who parried the Kookaburra with an outstretched hand towards teammate Marnus Labuschagne at gully. However, third umpire Joel Wilson contentiously turned down the dismissal following a lengthy review, deeming that Smith received assistance from the surface before flicking up the ball. The Australian vice-captain shook his head in disbelief after his acrobatic effort went unrewarded.

Kohli and the recalled Shubman Gill added 40 for the third wicket before the Indian No. 3 suffered a brain fade on what proved the final delivery before lunch, needlessly charging at spinner Nathan Lyon and edging to slip for 20.

    ‘That’s out!’ – DRS drama favours Kohli | 03:07

Early in the afternoon session, Kohli lazily pressed at a length delivery from Boland and edged through to Webster for 17, booed by the Sydney crowd as he exited the field. The Victorian was denied another wicket in his following over when Smith dropped a dolly at second slip, gifting Jadeja an early life.

Indian wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant absorbed two painful blows while facing Starc from the Paddington End – one left a bruise on his left arm while the other crashed into his helmet, forcing a concussion test.

Not long after, Lyon spilled a one-handed chance at backward point to hand Jadeja another reprieve and deny Webster his maiden Test wicket, with Pant rubbing salt into the wounds by slapping the following delivery down the ground for a 99m six. In comical scenes, venue staff needed a ladder to retrieve the ball from the top of the sight screen.

Pant required further medical attention after copping a Cummins bumper to the shoulder, but survived through to the tea break in a 48-run partnership with Jadeja for the fifth wicket.

Momentum swung firmly back in Australia’s favour early in the evening session when Boland struck in consecutive deliveries – Pant top-edged a pull shot towards mid-on for 40 before Smith swallowed a catch at second slip to remove Melbourne centurion Nitish Reddy Kumar for a golden duck. The hat-trick delivery narrowly evaded Washington Sundar’s outside edge, with Boland receiving a standing ovation from the Member’s Stand when he returned to fine leg.

    Gill undone by Smith’s chirping | 00:31

Jadeja’s laborious knock ended when Starc trapped him plumb on the pads for 26 – the left-hander wasted a review before sheepishly trudging off the ground when ball-tracking showed the Kookaburra would have hit halfway up middle stump.

Wilson was once again the centre of attention when Australia reviewed a caught-behind chance against all-rounder Washington Sundar, who was sent packing for 14 after a small spike appeared on Snicko as the Kookaburra passed his glove.

Prasidh Krishna departed after a wild slog before Cummins (2-37 from 15.2 overs) wrapped up the innings, with Bumrah blasting 22 (17) in a late counterpunch.

With the Sydney crowd praying for a trademark ramp, teenager Konstas instead charged at Bumrah and clipped the first delivery of Australia’s innings through mid-wicket for a boundary. Later in the same over, Bumrah struck Khawaja on the glove, allowing the Australian to soak up precious time with medical staff running onto the ground.

However, Konstas’ late antics fired up Bumrah and gave India something to celebrate following an otherwise one-sided day.

Earlier, Australian great Mark Waugh presented Webster with his baggy green as the Tasmanian all-rounder became the nation’s 469th men’s Test cricketer.

The fifth Test between India and Australia will resume on Saturday at 10.30am AEDT.

Day 1 Live Updates and Blog: Scott Boland shines with 4 wickets, Sam Konstas stuns with four first-ball dismissals, Jasprit Bumrah confronts Konstas

The first day of the highly anticipated match between Team Australia and Team India has been nothing short of eventful. Scott Boland was the star of the day, taking 4 crucial wickets to put Australia in a commanding position. However, the highlight of the day was Sam Konstas who created history by dismissing four batsmen on the first ball of their innings.

In a heated moment, Jasprit Bumrah confronted Konstas after his fourth consecutive first-ball dismissal, leading to a tense exchange between the two players. The incident added an extra layer of drama to an already thrilling match.

The weather played spoilsport towards the end of the day, with rain interrupting play. The Sydney rain is expected to continue into tomorrow, which could potentially impact the outcome of the match.

As the day comes to a close, here is a look at the scorecard:

    Team Australia: 225/7 (Boland 4-45)
    Team India: Yet to bat

In today’s match between India and Australia, Virat Kohli has once again fallen victim to the dreaded nick. The Indian captain, known for his aggressive batting style and consistency, was caught behind by the Australian wicketkeeper off a sharp delivery from the fast bowler.

This dismissal has once again raised questions about Kohli’s vulnerability to the swinging ball and the need for him to work on his technique in order to avoid getting out in this manner.

    Who: USA vs Switzerland

What: 2025 World Juniors Quarterfinal #2

    When: 2:30pm ET

Where: Canadian Tire Centre // NHL Network

    ———————————————————————————–

The United States men’s national junior ice hockey team has been playing at the World Juniors since 1974. Not sure how good at math most of you are, but that is now 50 years of WJC tournaments. And in those 50 years, they have never won back-to-back gold medals.

    2004. 2010. 2013. 2017. 2021. 2024.

There has always been a gap between golds for the US. But this year they have a chance to dominate the world for a two year stretch like they’ve never done before.

They are already on a strong path towards achieving just that. They took the top seed out of the Group A bracket after pumping the Canadians 4-1 on New Years Eve. Sure, they dropped an overtime loss to the Finns during group play. But they took care of business, and have set themselves up with the clearest path back to the gold medal game.

Today they’ll have Switzerland in their way. The Swiss have always been a pesky team to play against. They’re 1-3 in this tournament so far, but they’ve had a couple tight ones against Slovakia and Sweden. So it’s not like this is some throwaway game up in Rochester. But Nico Hischier ain’t walking through that door. This game is all about the boys getting hot at the right time. Get the BC line going. Get the checking lines going. Get Trey Augustine to really settle into his game. A win is a win at the end of the day, but it would be great for this one to be convincing heading into the semis.

So with that in mind, let’s fire up the live blog. I’ll be back in here updating the blog throughout the game, so keep hitting that refresh button between periods.

The first will bring light snow Thursday night. The more impactful storm arrives this weekend.

INDIANAPOLIS — As expected, the first day of 2025 was cold and breezy. Overnight temperatures will fall into the lower 20s with highs on Thursday in the middle 30s. Most of Thursday will be dry.

A fast moving weather system will bring snow showers to central Indiana Thursday night into Friday. Some of those snow showers may mix with rain across the southern half of the state. In this area, accumulations will be less than an inch. Where it stays all snow and mainly north of Indianapolis, an inch, maybe two will be possible. This is not a big snow event but the weather impacts include some slick roads early Friday.

A higher impact storm on the way for the weekend. The exact track, timing and totals are still question marks. However, we are confident we will be tracking a winter storm system this weekend. Please stay tuned for updates and be prepared for weather impacts from this storm.

The other part of the weather story is the cold. Forecast highs are in the 20s starting Friday and if we end up with some snow on the ground from the weekend storm there will be the threat of some below zero temperatures next week.
