“Fire Mayo” chant emerged at Gillette Stadium during blowout loss to Chargers

During the fourth quarter of an ugly loss to the Chargers on Saturday, many of the few who remained for garbage time of a garbage game made their preferences known regarding the team’s first-year head coach.

“Fire Mayo!” was the chant that emerged.

You hear those things,” coach Jerod Mayo said after the game, via Mike Reiss of ESPN.com. “But at the same time, they paid to sit in the seats, and we’ve got to play better. If we play better, we don’t have to hear that stuff.”

He’s right, but the problem is the play. And the coach is responsible for it.

Of course, the roster has something to do with it. And the roster that Bill Belichick left for Mayo wasn’t good. In Belichick’s last two years with the Patriots, the greatest coach in football history (as UNC recruits are constantly hearing it) could muster only 12 total wins in 34 total games.

For years, Belichick the coach had to compensate for the failures of Belichick the personnel guru. Once Tom Brady left, it all caught up to Belichick. And the stench of bad personnel decisions lingers.

That doesn’t mean Mayo should be guaranteed a second season. At times this year, it has felt as if Mayo was trying to talk his way out of a job. Like when he called his team “soft.” And it was odd, to say the least, to learn on Saturday that Mayo said running back Rhamondre Stevenson wouldn’t start the game due to ongoing fumbling issues — before Stevenson actually started the game.

Thriving as an NFL coach is proven in big moments. Surviving is shown in little things. Too often this year, Mayo has tripped over those little things. And it raises the question of whether ownership did the wrong thing by creating a contractual succession plan that gave Mayo the job before Bill Belichick was asked to leave it.

Now, the question becomes what will Robert Kraft do? Firing Mayo this quickly could be interpreted as an admission that Mayo never should have been hired. And there’s a chance that Mayo simply needs more time to grow and to develop into the role.

But only dysfunctional teams deal with mistakes by doubling down. The smart teams recognize the error of their ways, and they make changes.

It was never going to be easy to follow Belichick. And if Mayo were to be fired after only one season in Belichick’s long shadow, the next coach will end up lurking in it, too.

On one hand, it’s part of the price to pay for two decades of excellence. On the other hand, a simple question needs to be asked. Can Mayo ever live up to the excellence that Belichick demonstrated? If the projection is that he can’t and won’t, it makes sense to consider a change.

Especially with former Belichick assistant Brian Flores possibly on the brink of becoming a head coach again, if there’s an owner willing to ignore his pending lawsuit against the NFL and four franchises.

During the New England Patriots’ blowout loss to the Los Angeles Chargers at Gillette Stadium, fans took their frustration to a new level with a chant that could be heard throughout the stadium: “Fire Mayo!”

The chant, directed at Patriots defensive coordinator Jerod Mayo, came as the team struggled to contain the Chargers’ offense and fell behind by a significant margin. Fans were clearly unhappy with the team’s performance and took the opportunity to voice their displeasure.

While it’s unclear whether the chant will have any impact on Mayo’s future with the team, it’s clear that fans are not pleased with the current state of the Patriots defense. As the team looks to regroup and improve in the coming weeks, it remains to be seen whether the “Fire Mayo” chant will continue to be heard at Gillette Stadium.

BYU delivers Alamo Bowl blowout to Colorado in final game for Travis Hunter and Shedeur Sanders

SAN ANTONIO, TX - DECEMBER 28: Brigham Young Cougars wide receiver Parker Kingston (11) hurdles the goal line after a punt return for a touchdown during first half action during the football game between the BYU Cougars and Colorado Buffaloes on December 28, 2024, at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas. BYU made the final game of Travis Hunter and Shedeur Sanders’ Colorado careers one to forget.

The No. 17 Cougars blew out the No. 23 Buffaloes 36-14 in the Alamo Bowl on Saturday night as Colorado was overmatched in nearly every facet of the game.

BYU (11-2) led 20-0 at halftime as many of the flaws that had plagued Colorado through the first two years of Deion Sanders’ tenure reared their ugly heads. The Buffs (9-4) couldn’t get a running game going and the offensive line struggled in pass protection too. After BYU led 10-0 in the first quarter, the Cougars extended their lead when Parker Kingston returned a punt 64 yards for a touchdown in the second quarter.

The blowout happened even as BYU QB Jake Retzlaff threw two interceptions and backup Gerry Bohanon threw one in his only pass attempt.

Hunter, the 2024 Heisman Trophy winner, got his highlight with a 43-yard TD in the third quarter on a nicely-placed pass from Sanders. But that was about all that went right for the Buffaloes.

Both Hunter and Sanders played for Colorado despite likely being early first-round picks in the 2025 NFL Draft. Colorado took out insurance policies for Sanders, Hunter and others ahead of the game in the event of an injury.

Sanders even unveiled cleats with the New York Giants logo on them before the game — the Giants have the worst record in the NFL and currently are in position for the No. 1 pick in the draft — but took the field in the first quarter with black cleats on his feet.

The game was a matchup between the two Big 12 teams because of the Alamo Bowl’s selection process. The bowl has traditionally pitted teams from the Big 12 and Pac-12 together, but the Pac-12 dissolved before the 2024 season with just Washington State and Oregon State remaining as members of the conference.

Before the season, the Alamo Bowl said that it’d pick a team that was in the Pac-12 in 2023 and a team that was in the Big 12 in 2023. With Arizona State and Oregon in the College Football Playoff and other former Pac-12 teams not having spectacular seasons, the bowl announced before the end of the 2024 season that it’d take either Arizona State and Colorado against either BYU or Iowa State based on the outcome of the Big 12 title game.

Though it was a game between current Big 12 teams, BYU and Colorado didn’t meet in the regular season. The two teams found themselves on the wrong end of a four-way tie for first with ASU and ISU and therefore missed a chance to play for the conference title and a shot at the College Football Playoff.

The win gives BYU 11 wins for the first time since 2020 and the first time in a non-pandemic season since 2009. Colorado, meanwhile, made a five-win leap in 2024 and looks to sustain that success in 2025 despite the losses of Sanders and Hunter. The Buffaloes have gotten a commitment from five-star QB JuJu Lewis and also added former Liberty QB Kaidon Salter in the transfer portal.

The BYU Cougars delivered a dominant performance in the Alamo Bowl, blowing out the Colorado Buffaloes in what turned out to be the final game for star players Travis Hunter and Shedeur Sanders.

BYU, led by quarterback Shedeur Sanders, son of NFL legend Deion Sanders, put on a show on both sides of the ball. Sanders threw for over 300 yards and four touchdowns, while Hunter racked up over 150 yards receiving and two touchdowns of his own.

The Cougars’ defense was equally impressive, holding the Buffaloes to just 10 points and forcing multiple turnovers throughout the game.

For Hunter and Sanders, this game marked the end of their college careers as they prepare to enter the NFL draft. Both players made a huge impact on the BYU program during their time there, and their leadership will be sorely missed.

As the final seconds ticked off the clock, the Cougars celebrated their decisive victory and sent Hunter and Sanders off with a memorable win in their last game in a BYU uniform.

  • Patriots-Chargers Stock Watch: Stock down across the board in blowout loss

Patriots-Chargers Stock Watch: Stock down across the board in blowout loss

Patriots-Chargers Stock Watch: Stock down across the board in blowout loss originally appeared on NBC Sports Boston

The New England Patriots added another “Worst Loss of the Season” nominee Saturday as they were blown out by the Los Angeles Chargers in front of their home crowd, 40-7.

Just about everything that could go wrong, did go wrong for the Patriots in the embarrassing defeat. In what NBC Sports Boston’s Patriots insider Tom E. Curran labeled an “unprofessional” performance, New England allowed L.A. to score on seven consecutive possessions. The Chargers cruised to victory while dominating the time of possession battle, 40:34 to 19:26.

The dismal showing culminated in boos and “Fire Mayo” chants from the Gillette Stadium crowd as the Patriots fell to 3-13. Other than their updated 2025 draft position, there were hardly any positives to take away from Saturday’s game.

That was reflected in the latest “Stock Watch” with Curran and fellow Pats insider Phil Perry. The duo broke down their “Stock Up, Stock Down” picks in the latest edition of the Patriots Talk Podcast.

Patriots Talk Podcast: Disastrous day for Patriots puts need for change back on front burner | Listen & Subscribe | Watch on YouTube

    Stock Down

    Cole Strange, OL

Curran: “Cole Strange gets a Stock Down for the early snap.”

    Patriots offensive line

Perry: “Can we give it to the entire Patriots offensive line? It just felt like Maye was under duress — it felt like maybe the game where Drake Maye got the most punishment that he has absorbed all season, which is saying something.”

CB Jonathan Jones and S Kyle Dugger

Perry: “On the scene for a lot of Ladd McConkey yards and a Ladd McConkey touchdown where he ran by Jonathan Jones and Kyle Dugger. Can we just add Kyle Dugger as sort of an addendum to the Jonathan Jones Stock Down? Because that was — you’re the free safety on the play, you can’t be flat-footed and just have the guy run right by you.”

    Patriots coaching staff

Perry: “We have to put the coaches in there. Across the board.”

    Stock Up

The Patriots fans at Gillette Stadium

Curran: “Salute to the 38,000 fans who showed up.”

The New England Patriots suffered a devastating blowout loss to the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 8, and the stock of the team as a whole plummeted as a result. From the offense to the defense, and even special teams, it was a rough outing for the Patriots in all areas.

Quarterback Mac Jones struggled to find a rhythm against the Chargers’ defense, throwing for just 218 yards and two interceptions. The rookie quarterback’s stock took a hit as he failed to lead the Patriots to any significant scoring drives.

The running game also faltered, with Damien Harris and Rhamondre Stevenson unable to find much room to run against the Chargers’ stout defensive front. The lack of a ground game put even more pressure on Jones and the passing attack.

Defensively, the Patriots were unable to stop Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert, who torched them for 365 yards and three touchdowns. The secondary was repeatedly burned by big plays, and the pass rush failed to generate much pressure on Herbert.

Even special teams had a rough day, with a missed field goal and a blocked punt adding to the Patriots’ woes.

Overall, it was a disappointing performance for the Patriots, and their stock took a hit across the board. They will need to regroup quickly and make adjustments if they hope to bounce back from this blowout loss.

Texans’ C.J. Stroud acknowledges fans’ booing during blowout loss: ‘People are entitled to their opinions’

Houston Texans fans were hoping to find a win over the Baltimore Ravens under their tree on Christmas. Instead, they got a 31-2 blowout loss, and that prompted the boo birds to make an appearance at NRG Stadium.

Quarterback C.J. Stroud, who failed to find any rhythm against the Baltimore defense, was asked about those very audible boos in his postgame press conference. Stroud said he wouldn’t let the jeering eat at him, but he understood where the fans were coming from and said he could use it as fuel moving forward.

“People are entitled to their opinions,” Stroud said. “They care about the game. Their emotions matter. I understand. It’s not the first time, and it probably won’t be the last. It’s not something to internalize and point the finger at yourself, but it is something you can use to motivate you. … I got plenty of football left in my career hopefully, God willing. This is gonna be a story I’ll tell one day that’ll help me in the long run.”

The Texans managed to generate only 211 total yards of offense, and their only points came from the defense. Stroud connected on just 17 of his 31 passing attempts for 185 yards and an interception, and he was under duress all afternoon. The Ravens got to Stroud for five sacks totaling 37 yards in losses.

To his credit, Stroud offered a very blunt self-assessment while speaking to the media.

“Terrible on my behalf,” Stroud said of his performance. “Probably one of my worst games of my whole career.”

The Texans have already clinched an AFC South title and a playoff berth, so next week’s regular-season finale against the Tennessee Titans will be about getting back on track before the postseason. That one will be on the road, so there’s no risk of hearing any boos from the home crowd in Nashville.

The Houston Texans’ rookie quarterback C.J. Stroud faced a tough crowd during a recent blowout loss, as fans booed the struggling team throughout the game. Despite the negative reaction from the fans, Stroud remained composed and acknowledged their right to express their opinions.

“People are entitled to their opinions, whether they’re cheering us on or booing us,” Stroud said in a post-game interview. “We know we didn’t perform up to our standards today, and we have to own that. But we’re going to keep working hard and striving to do better for our fans.”

Stroud’s mature response to the booing shows his resilience and determination to improve as a player. Despite the difficult loss, he remains focused on the team’s progress and is committed to turning things around in the future.

Texans fans may have voiced their frustration during the game, but Stroud’s understanding and professionalism in the face of adversity demonstrate his leadership qualities and dedication to the team. As the season continues, fans can expect to see Stroud continue to grow and develop as a player, with the support of the team and their loyal fan base.
