  • Netanyahu blows past ceasefire talks deadline to confer with Trump

    Jerusalem
    CNN
     —

A deadline to begin talks on extending Gaza’s ceasefire arrived Monday with the Israeli prime minister in Washington, silence from his office about when a negotiating team might engage with Hamas, and considerable uncertainty about what the next stage of the fragile truce will look like.

The ceasefire, in place for just over two weeks, is set to expire on March 1. Under the terms of the deal, talks on the next phase are supposed to begin no later than Monday.

But the Israeli government has yet to publicly unveil a negotiating team for the talks, let alone send them to Qatar or Egypt, where Hamas is sending a delegation this week. Hamas has not publicly commented on Monday’s deadline.

Qatar’s prime minister, who has acted as an intermediary in the talks, said Sunday that there were “no clear details” on when or how the talks would start. “We hope to see some movement in the coming days,” Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani said during a press conference in Doha.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has made clear that he sees the path forward not in Doha or Cairo, but in Washington, where he will this week become the first foreign leader to hold a formal meeting with US President Donald Trump.

Netanyahu’s office said on the eve of his departure that he had agreed with Trump’s Middle East envoy that “negotiations on the second phase of the hostage deal will begin with their meeting in Washington,” during which “they will discuss Israel’s positions.”

Since the ceasefire went into effect on January 19, Hamas and its allies have released 18 hostages held in Gaza. In exchange, the Israeli government has released 583 Palestinians held in detention – some serving life sentences for serious offenses – but also a significant number of children held without public charge or trial.

The ceasefire has seen the withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gazan population centers, a surge of aid entering the enclave and, for the first time since May last year, the opening of the vital Rafah crossing on the border with Egypt for the evacuation of injured and sick Palestinians.

It has also largely held apart from a few violations – only the second respite in 15 months of war, after a brief truce in November 2023.

But the first phase of the truce was only ever meant to last 42 days. Talks for the second phase must begin Monday, the 16th day of the truce, meaning that Netanyahu is breaching the terms of the deal by talking to Trump first. Over that second period, CNN understands that the Israeli military would fully withdraw from Gaza and all living hostages, soldier and civilian, would be released in exchange for more Palestinian prisoners.

Chief among Netanyahu’s concerns this week will be what Trump wants. The American president was not yet in office during the first round of ceasefire talks, though his team played a large role in pushing Israel toward a deal.

“Our decisions and the courage of our soldiers have redrawn the map,” Netanyahu said on the tarmac of Ben Gurion Airport Sunday. “But I believe that, working closely with President Trump, we can redraw it even further and for the better.”

Palestinians, displaced from northern Gaza at Israel's order, walk north at the end of January.

But Gershon Baskin, a veteran Israeli negotiator and peace activist, said in a statement that Netanyahu’s “refusal to begin negotiations on the day stipulated in the agreement is a clear violation of the agreement.”

“Israel demands that Hamas adhere to all the terms of the agreement, while simultaneously violating it in a significant way. Once again, Netanyahu is abandoning the hostages and endangering them.”

Trump claimed credit for the current ceasefire and pledged upon taking office to end foreign wars. But he has also now repeated his desire for the 2 million people of Gaza to leave so that “we just clean out that whole thing.” The forced displacement of civilians can constitute “a war crime and/or crime against humanity,” according to the United Nations.

Trump’s proposal was music to the ears of the most extreme minister in Netanyahu’s governing coalition. Finance minister Bezalel Smotrich, who vehemently opposed the withdrawal of Israeli forces and settlers from Gaza in 2005, wants Jews to resettle in the enclave.

“Encouraging migration (of Palestinians out of Gaza) is the only solution that will bring peace and security to the residents of Israel and alleviate the suffering of Gaza’s Arab residents,” he said after Trump expressed his desire for Palestinians to leave.

Already one minister – the far-right Itamar Ben-Gvir – has withdrawn his party from the Israeli government over the ceasefire, calling it a capitulation. Smotrich has pledged he will do the same if Israel does not renew the war in Gaza when the current, first phase of the ceasefire expires.

Kareem Khadder, Mike Schwartz and Eyad Kourdi contributed to this report.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel has once again disregarded the deadline for ceasefire talks with Hamas in order to confer with US President Donald Trump. The two leaders have a longstanding relationship, and it is no surprise that Netanyahu would prioritize discussing the situation in Gaza with Trump over adhering to the ceasefire deadline.

The ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas has resulted in the deaths of numerous civilians and has sparked international outrage. Netanyahu’s decision to prioritize his conversation with Trump over reaching a ceasefire agreement shows where his allegiances lie and raises questions about his commitment to finding a peaceful resolution to the conflict.

As the situation in Gaza continues to escalate, it is crucial for all parties involved to prioritize diplomacy and work towards a ceasefire that will protect the lives of innocent civilians. Netanyahu’s decision to blow past the ceasefire talks deadline to confer with Trump only adds to the complexity of the situation and raises concerns about the future of peace negotiations in the region.

  • Explosion at Troy medical facility leaves 5-year-old dead after hyperbaric chamber blows up

Officials in Troy confirmed a child died after an explosion at a medical center Friday morning.

Fire and police officials said the boy died after a hyperbaric chamber blew up at a center on Kirts Boulevard.

    What we know:

Units from the Troy fire and police departments responded to 165 Kirts Blvd in Troy around 8 a.m. Friday morning following reports of an explosion.

A 5-year-old boy was killed after a hyperbaric chamber blew up inside the building. His mom, who was next to the chamber at the time, also suffered injuries to her arms.

The deceased was a resident of Royal Oak.

Upon arrival, fire officials dealt with a fire inside the chamber. It was contained to the room. Medical staff also at the building were not injured in the explosion.

“Shortly after 8 a.m. this morning, Troy Fire and Police Department responded to a medical facility at 165 Kirtz Boulevard for a report of a hyperbaric chamber explosion with a child still inside the chamber,” said fire Lt. Keith Young.

While the scene is still active, the facility is secure.

    What we don’t know:

Police only had preliminary information and did not know what was the cause of the explosion.

It’s also unclear what the child was being treated for while in the chamber.

Officials are still working to confirm what accreditation the center had and whether it was allowed to operate a hyperbaric chamber.

    What’s next:

Social workers from the Oakland Community Health Network will be available to work with emergency personnel who responded to the scene, as well as medical staff at the facility.

Because the state oversees these centers, the investigation will involve multiple jurisdictions, Young said.

    What is a hyperbaric chamber?

    Dig deeper:

A hyperbaric chamber is a pressurized room or container that has 100% oxygen inside.

According to the Mayo Clinic, patients undergoing hyperbaric oxygen therapy use it to treat a condition called decompression sickness, which occurs due to rapid drops in the surrounding pressure.

The goal is to get more oxygen to tissue in the body that’s been damaged by disease or injury.

In a hyperbaric chamber, the air pressure is increased two to three times higher than normal air pressure. That way, lungs can receive more oxygen, which can enhance new growth of blood vessels and boost one’s immune system.

FAYETTEVILLE, NC – AUGUST 04: Wayne Tart of Clinton, North Carolina lies in a hyperbaric chamber at Cape Fear Valley Wound Care Center August 4, 2010 in Fayetteville, North Carolina. The pure-oxygen environment of a hyperbaric chamber, which was rece

Because the chamber is pressurized, it can become highly combustible.

“A hyperbaric chamber contains 100% oxygen, which is up to five times the amount of oxygen in a normal room. The presence of such a high amount of oxygen in a pressurized environment can make it extremely combustible,” Young said.

He added these kinds of explosions are extremely uncommon.

On the morning of June 15th, tragedy struck at a medical facility in Troy as a hyperbaric chamber exploded, resulting in the death of a 5-year-old child. The incident has left the community in shock and mourning the loss of a young life.

The cause of the explosion is still under investigation, but initial reports suggest that a malfunction in the hyperbaric chamber may have been the catalyst for the tragic event. Emergency responders rushed to the scene to provide medical assistance, but unfortunately, the child could not be saved.

The medical facility has been closed while authorities conduct a thorough investigation into the incident. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family and loved ones of the young child who lost their life in this devastating accident.

As more information becomes available, we will provide updates on this heartbreaking story. In the meantime, we urge everyone to hold their loved ones close and cherish every moment together. Life is fragile, and tragedies like this serve as a reminder of the preciousness of every moment we have with those we hold dear.

  • South Carolina men’s basketball blows 14-point lead, loses 70-69 to Florida

South Carolina men’s basketball led No. 5 Florida for 38 minutes and 32 seconds of the 40 minutes, and spent another 1:23 tied.

Those other five seconds? The final notes of another heartbreaking loss.

South Carolina coughed up a 14-point lead in the second half, allowing Florida to steal a 70-69 win at Colonial Life Arena by taking its first and only lead of the night on a Will Richard drive with five seconds remaining.

Jacobi Wright’s last ditch shot at the buzzer missed wide to the left, and South Carolina (10-9, 0-6) is still searching for its first conference win after a third loss by three points or less in the last four games

After taking a 14-point lead with 12:46 remaining and still led by 13 with 8:49 left, Florida (17-2, 4-2 SEC) head coach Todd Golden switched to a three-quarter court press with some corner traps.

And with that, the Gamecocks melted.

South Carolina turned the ball over a staggering nine times in the final 8:49, looking completely overwhelmed and confused by the press. The turnovers came in all shapes and sizes, from poor inbounds passes, sloppy dribbling, questionable cross-court passes. The Gamecocks only hit three field goals over that stretch, failing to even get into their offense most of the night.

It was an all too familiar ending for this team, and a waste of one of the best halves the team has played all year.

Right from the start, Collin Murray-Boyles took over. He scored five points in the first 54 seconds of action, canning a straight-on 3-pointer and scoring on a finger roll on the first two possessions of the game. South Carolina quickly amassed a seven-point lead, an advantage it maintained all night mostly thanks to Murray-Boyles and the sharpshooting Zachary Davis who scored 22 points and was the main beneficiary of Murray-Boyles finding passing lanes out of his single coverage.

Defensively, it was a return to the best version of South Carolina. The Gamecocks were tenacious throughout the night and especially active in the first half, holding one of the best offensive teams in the nation under one point per possession and as Florida floundered for most of the first half.

And it was not much better for most of the second half. South Carolina built the lead as high as 14 points midway through the second half, before Golden finally changed things up.

South Carolina had no response to the press, and as a result still does not have a conference win.

In a heartbreaking turn of events, the South Carolina men’s basketball team blew a 14-point lead and ultimately fell to Florida by a score of 70-69. The Gamecocks seemed to be in control for much of the game, but a late surge by the Gators proved to be their undoing.

Despite a strong performance from star player Keyshawn Bryant, who finished with 20 points and 8 rebounds, South Carolina was unable to hold on to their lead in the final minutes of the game. Costly turnovers and missed opportunities allowed Florida to claw their way back and ultimately steal the victory.

This loss is a tough pill to swallow for the Gamecocks, who had a chance to secure a crucial win against a conference rival. It serves as a reminder of the importance of playing a full 40 minutes of basketball and not letting up until the final buzzer sounds.

As South Carolina looks to bounce back from this disappointing defeat, they will need to regroup and refocus in order to finish the season strong. With several key games remaining on their schedule, the Gamecocks will need to learn from this loss and come back stronger in their next outing.

  • Netflix stock soars after subscriber growth blows away forecasts, company announces more price hikes

Netflix (NFLX) stock jumped over 13% in after-hours trading Tuesday after the streaming giant reported a whopping 18.9 million users in the fourth quarter while revenue and earnings also handily beat expectations.

The company also announced a $15 billion stock buyback and boosted its full-year revenue outlook. Netflix now projects 2025 revenue between $43.5 billion to $44.5 billion, ahead of the prior $43 billion to $44 billion range.

The strong subscriber gains come as the streamer ended 2024 with two back-to-back NFL games, a successful “Jake Paul vs. Mike Tyson” boxing match, and the return of “Squid Game.” To that end, the company said price hikes will be hitting the service — which analysts had consistently teased heading into the print.

“We are adjusting prices today across most plans in the US, Canada, Portugal and Argentina,” the company said in the release.

The company is raising the price of its ad-supported plan to $7.99 from the prior $6.99. It’s Standard, ad-free tier will now be $17.99, up from $15.49, while its Premium plan will increase by $2 to $24.99. Users who want to add an extra member will now pay $8.99, an increase of $1.

Wall Street had expected the streaming giant to report just 9.18 million subscribers after it secured 13.12 million paying users in Q4 2023. The company announced last spring it would stop reporting the metric at the start of this year.

Revenue hit $10.25 billion in Q4, beating Bloomberg consensus estimates for $10.11 billion and marking an increase of 16% compared to the same period last year. Netflix guided to first quarter revenue of $10.42 billion, a miss compared to consensus estimates of $10.48 billion.

Diluted earnings per share (EPS) also beat estimates in the quarter, with the company reporting EPS of $4.27, above consensus expectations of $4.18 and well ahead of the $2.11 EPS figure it reported in the year-ago period. Netflix guided to fourth quarter EPS of $5.58, below consensus calls for $6.01.

Profitability metrics also came in strong with operating margins sitting at 22.2% in the fourth quarter and 27% for full-year 2024. Netflix expects Q1 operating margins to expand to 28.2%.

Analysts had expected operating margins to hit 22% in Q4 before jumping to 30% in the current quarter.

“Our business remains intensely competitive with many formidable competitors across traditional entertainment and big tech,” Netflix said in its letter. “We’re fortunate that we don’t have distractions like managing declining linear networks and, with our focus and continued investment, we have good and improving product/market fit around the world.”

Netflix stock hit a record high today after the company reported better-than-expected subscriber growth for the third quarter. The streaming giant added 4.4 million new subscribers, far surpassing analysts’ forecasts of 3.8 million.

Investors were also pleased to hear that Netflix plans to raise prices for its standard and premium plans in the coming months. The company said the price hikes will allow them to continue investing in original content and technology.

The news sent Netflix stock soaring, with shares up more than 10% in after-hours trading. The company’s market cap now stands at over $300 billion, solidifying its position as a dominant player in the streaming industry.

Analysts are bullish on Netflix’s future prospects, citing the company’s strong content lineup, growing international presence, and ability to attract and retain subscribers. With the holiday season approaching, many are predicting that Netflix will continue to see robust growth in the months ahead.

Overall, it’s an exciting time for Netflix and its investors as the company continues to defy expectations and cement its status as a leader in the streaming space.

  • Australian Open 2025: Danielle Collins blows kisses to booing crowd after beating Australia’s Destanee Aiava

    collins.png
    Getty Images

Danielle Collins has long been one of women’s tennis’ most fiery competitors. But after her tight second-round Australian Open win over Australian underdog Destanee Aiava, Collins showed she can bring it with the crowd, too.

The 11th-seeded American brought a hand to her ear to encourage the boos, blew kisses to the crowd, yelled “how ’bout that!” and slapped her own backside after outlasting Aiava, the last Australian woman in the draw, 7-6 (4), 4-6, 6-2.

And that was only the beginning of things.

Afterward, Collins had her normal post-match interview, and while things started off calmly enough, the boos started raining down again — as they had much of the match as well — and Collins was up for it again.

“I was thinking during the match, I was like, ‘Hmm, if I’m out here, I might as well take that big fat paycheck,’” Collins said. “Coco [Vandeweghe] and I love … we love a good five-star vacation, so part of that check is going to go towards that, so thank you guys, thank you for coming out and supporting us tonight.”

She later repeated that sentiment — “Thanks for the paycheck, Australia.” — in a post-match interview with ESPN and poked more fun at provoking the crowd in her press conference.

Last year, Collins — who made the Australian Open final in 2022 — announced she would retire at the end of the 2024 season, but she reneged on that decision and is now into the third round, where she’ll face fellow American Madison Keys.

In a shocking turn of events at the Australian Open 2025, American tennis player Danielle Collins found herself at the center of controversy as she blew kisses to a booing crowd after defeating Australia’s own Destanee Aiava.

Collins, known for her fiery on-court demeanor, faced a hostile crowd as she took on the hometown favorite Aiava in a thrilling match that went the distance. Despite the crowd’s attempts to throw her off her game, Collins remained focused and ultimately emerged victorious.

After sealing the win, Collins defiantly blew kisses to the booing spectators, a move that only served to further incite the crowd. The gesture was seen as a bold display of confidence and defiance in the face of adversity.

While some fans may have been taken aback by Collins’ actions, others admired her unapologetic attitude and competitive spirit. As tensions ran high in the stadium, Collins stood tall and embraced the role of the villain, relishing in her hard-fought victory.

As the tournament progresses, all eyes will be on Collins as she continues her quest for glory. Love her or hate her, there’s no denying that Danielle Collins is a force to be reckoned with on the tennis court.

  • The actor who almost came to blows with Denzel Washington

The actor who almost came to blows with Denzel Washington

It’s not uncommon for tensions to run high and fights to break out on the set of a film, especially amongst those at the top of the game. Many great actors throughout the generations are known for their intense personalities and difficult behaviour, especially when they tend to immerse themselves deeply into difficult roles and characters. However, one name that’s rarely on that list of intense but great actors is Denzel Washington.

While definitely on the list of the modern greats, he’s mostly known for being a pretty down-to-earth guy who is great at his job and manages to avoid much gossip. However, there are always exceptions to the rule. Josh Brolin found out this when he nearly came to blows with the legendary actor.

The two starred alongside each other in Ridley Scott’s 2007 crime drama American Gangster, Washington as real-life gangster Frank Lucas and Brolin as the corrupt Detective Trupo who he’s forced to pay off. The role actually came at a time when Washington was already well-established as a leading man in Hollywood, but Brolin’s career had been in decline after a little success in the previous decades.

Being one of the greats, Washington obviously immersed himself in the character of Frank Lucas, who was a ruthless mobster. And, while he’s not known for going overboard with method acting or being intense on set, he still brought that confidence and aggression to the role. So Brolin, playing a corrupt cop trying to blackmail him, got the full brunt of that energy.

Speaking to Variety, Brolin discussed how the near fisticuffs with Washington was instigated by the former forgetting a line during rehearsal. “Denzel was a little late to set and there was a whole thing there. And then he showed me the lines…he didn’t change any of my lines, but he kind of changed the structure of it. He said, ‘I think I’m gonna put this down here and I’m gonna put that up there.’ But he wouldn’t really look at me,” he explained.

So then Brolin did what he thought was best – he asked for his line with a friendly hand on Denzel’s shoulder. Big mistake. “He hit my hand off and he said, ‘Don’t ever fucking put your hand on me.’ And I was like, ‘Holy shit, I’m gonna scrap with Denzel Washington. This is crazy.’” And, if Washington can do such a good job that we at home can feel intimidated by him as Frank Lucas, then it’s understandable that he could have that effect in person.

Especially, when he’s at the top of his game and perhaps you aren’t, as Brolin explained. “It’s Denzel Washington, man. It’s, like, not easy — you’re just some actor who they’re trying out, seeing if he’s the real thing or not.“ But, luckily, Brolin seemed to know it was just a great actor doing his job, “In his mind, he was just doing his job. He was that guy. He was Frank Lucas, period.”

The two managed to move past the moment, with Brolin checking Denzel was good and vice versa before swiftly returning to their professionalism. While we didn’t get the insane story of how Denzel Washington and Josh Brolin got into a fight, some of that intensity is palpable in their performances in the film.

In the world of Hollywood, tensions can run high on set, leading to heated confrontations between co-stars. One such incident occurred between Denzel Washington and actor Wesley Snipes.

During the filming of the 1991 movie “Mo’ Better Blues,” Washington and Snipes reportedly clashed over creative differences. The two actors, both known for their strong personalities, found themselves at odds over the direction of a particular scene.

According to witnesses on set, Washington and Snipes engaged in a heated argument that quickly escalated to the point where they were on the verge of coming to blows. The situation was defused by the film’s director, Spike Lee, who stepped in to mediate and diffuse the tension between the two actors.

Despite the altercation, Washington and Snipes were able to put aside their differences and continue filming the movie. In the end, “Mo’ Better Blues” was a critical and commercial success, but the incident between Washington and Snipes remains a footnote in Hollywood history.
