Will Howard‘s parents, Bob and Maureen Howard, have supported his college football journey every step of the way.
Will kicked off his college football career at Kansas State University — roughly 18 hours away from his childhood home in Downingtown, Pa. He spent four seasons with the Wildcats and led his team to a Big 12 Championship victory in 2022 before transferring to the Ohio State University in 2024.
“It helps that I’m a little closer to home now. I’m only six and half hours away,” Will said during a press conference in January 2025 while talking about his family’s commitment to attending his games.
With the Buckeyes quarterback ready to face the University of Notre Dame in the College Football Playoff National Championship on Jan. 20, his dad and mom are as supportive as ever.
Here’s everything to know about Will Howard’s parents, Bob and Maureen Howard.
Bob and Maureen worked in finance and the medical field

Bob spent his undergrad years at Penn State University studying finance and earned his master’s in counseling psychology from Villanova University, per LinkedIn. Afterward, he worked in real estate finance and eventually tried his hand at entrepreneurship, according to The Columbus Dispatch.
Meanwhile, Maureen earned a bachelor’s degree in biology from the University of Delaware and her master’s in physical therapy from Temple University in physical therapy. Today, she is a pediatric physical therapist who previously worked in the NICU center at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.
Bob and Maureen share four kids

Bob and Maureen became parents on Sept. 24, 2001, with the arrival of Will. They later welcomed son Ryan and daughters Tori and Grace.
Ryan is currently a freshman at Kansas State, his older brother’s alma mater, where he plays football for the Wildcats.
They noticed Will’s athletic abilities early on

Bob and Maureen knew they had an athlete on their hands when Will was a toddler.
In November 2024, NBC4 Columbus caught up with Will’s parents in the stands at an Ohio State game, where they opened up about the first time they paid attention to his natural sports skills.
“[Starting] when he was 2 years old [and] he was shooting baskets in our basement and making them, we just kind of said, ‘There’s something a little different about him,’ ” Bob recalled.
Since then, they have helped foster his talents and watched him take on football. “It’s been a fun ride,” he added.
Bob and Maureen co-founded the Baby Merlin Company
In 2008, Bob and Maureen co-founded the Baby Merlin Company after the mom of four invented the Magic Sleepsuit. The product, a garment for babies who have grown out of the traditional swaddle blanket, was created out of pure necessity — she needed her infant Will to become a better sleeper.
“I’d lay him down for naps, and he’d wake up in like 30 minutes,” she told The Columbus Dispatch in September 2024. “I knew he needed more sleep. He was grumpy. I was grumpy.”
After family and friends tried out the product themselves and loved it, Bob encouraged Maureen to get it on store shelves. They eventually launched Baby Merlin Company, which took roughly 10 years to become a profitable business, and it was an all-hands-on-deck type of operation in the beginning.
“She’d yell down the stairs, ‘We’ve got a shipment,’ and all of us would walk outside and take all the boxes off the truck,” Will told the outlet of running Baby Merlin out of their home in Pennsylvania. “There’d probably be over 100 sometimes.”
He continued, “For me, it was cool to see them push through. It taught me how to work hard and how to appreciate all the little things. It did bring us together as a family, too.”
In 2021, Bob and Maureen sold Baby Merlin to Perch — a Boston-based technology-driven commerce company. However, Maureen remains the face of the business.
“Our kids saw it grow from an idea to a thriving business,” she said. “They helped unload shipments and break down pallets. It’s pretty cool that they saw that and helped. It truly was a family-run business, and we’re super proud of that.”
Bob and Maureen go through a “rollercoaster” of emotions watching Will play
Will Howard with his dad Bob Howard and brother Ryan Howard.

Decades after realizing that Will has a knack for sports, Bob and Maureen have witnessed their son grow into himself on the football field — which has involved many emotions.
“We [know] that college football has highs and lows, and you kind of have to be ready for the rollercoaster ride,” Maureen told NBC4 Columbus.
Still, she tries to take her cues from her son.
“People always ask me if I get nervous. I kind of go by Will, if he’s calm and feels ready, then I’m much calmer,” Maureen told the outlet, adding that Bob has a similar “calm exterior.”
She added, “But there’s some churning going on inside. Don’t be fooled.”
Will leans on his family for support

During a press conference in January 2025, Will talked to reporters about how he managed the transition from Kansas State to Ohio State.
“My support system always is my family. I lean on them for a ton of different stuff,” he said. “When I went out to Kansas State as an 18-year-old kid, [my mom and dad] came out there a lot. They helped me a lot.”
Will continued, “[Ohio State] was different. I’m older now. It felt more like a professional kind of move, [but] my family did an unbelievable job of helping me.”

The Windup Newsletter | This is The Athletic’s MLB newsletter. Sign up here to receive The Windup directly in your inbox.
Not content to simply win it all, the Dodgers Death Star project has now completed (maybe?) its second winter of construction. We also say goodbye to Bob Uecker, who passed away at 90 years old, and look at the latest with Vlad Jr. in Toronto. I’m Levi Weaver, here with Ken Rosenthal. Welcome to The Windup!
Big Deals: Dodgers sign Sasaki and Scott
Maybe the Dodgers should buy TikTok while they’re at it.
After months of speculation, a decision has been made: For a signing bonus of $6.5 million, 23-year-old RHP Roki Sasaki will be a Dodger, alongside countrymen Shohei Ohtani and Yoshinobu Yamamoto. The teammates from the 2023 World Baseball Classic champion Japan will be in a rotation that also includes Tyler Glasnow and Blake Snell before getting to a second tier of starters that includes Dustin May, Tony Gonsolin, Bobby Miller, Landon Knack, Ben Casparius, Emmet Sheehan, River Ryan and Gavin Stone (some of whom will miss time recovering from injuries).
Oh, right: and probably Clayton Kershaw at some point.
The bad news for opposing lineups is once they get the starter out of the game, the Dodgers bullpen — which already included Blake Treinen, Michael Kopech, Alex Vesia and Evan Phillips — will now include the top left-handed reliever on this year’s free agent market: Tanner Scott joined the wrecking crew on a four-year deal worth $72 million.
Please note: We have yet to mention their lineup of former MVPs and All-Stars.
MLB hasn’t seen a true dynasty in quite a while. The last team to win multiple titles in a row? The 1998-2000 Yankees. A lot can go wrong in any given season, but sheesh — a LOT would have to go wrong for this team to be anything short of dominant for the foreseeable future.
Sure, it’s easy to be cynical and say, “Surrrrre they didn’t have a handshake deal with Sasaki.” It’s reasonable to have your suspicions (though the league’s investigation concluded there wasn’t an illegal agreement in place). It’s also possible that L.A. is just the place where Sasaki felt he had the best opportunity to succeed. Can you blame him?
With apologies to the Padres and the Blue Jays (who came up just short yet again), the Dodgers’ winning streak didn’t end with the last out of the 2024 World Series. It might have been just the beginning.
More on Sasaki:
- One reason the Dodgers are stocking up on pitching? A history of injuries. Ken tells us that their big responsibility now is to keep Sasaki healthy.
- MLB experts weigh in on Sasaki’s fit with the Dodgers, and the fallout around the league.
Ken’s Notebook: Inside the Dodgers’ ‘homework assignment’
From my recent column with Fabian Ardaya, Dennis Lin, Patrick Mooney and Will Sammon:
Perhaps it was fitting that everyone could see the UCLA campus outside the window. Inside a long conference room off Wilshire Boulevard, team after team attempted to recruit the most coveted free agent of the moment. The suitors included storied franchises and less heralded organizations, all seeking to woo a quiet 23-year-old with a roaring fastball and an air of mystery. They did not arrive, however, without some sense of direction.
Roki Sasaki had assigned homework.
It was December in Los Angeles, and as Sasaski met with teams at the headquarters of the Wasserman Sports Agency, he remained several weeks away from finalizing his choice. But after years of anticipation, these gatherings represented the homestretch of a long selection process, and at this critical juncture, the Japanese star seemed clear about what he wanted to hear. He asked each potential employer to explain the reason behind a vexing issue that lingered over his final season before a long-anticipated jump to the majors: Why did his velocity fall off?
The question was pointed and “incredibly thoughtful,” according to one of the executives tasked with answering it. It also proved consuming, posed to teams just days before the first round of meetings.
“The homework assignment,” said one club official briefed on the process, “was the presentation, basically.”
With a cadre of representatives by his side, Sasaki essentially interviewed any team he wanted, allowing him to gain valuable insights from a host of pitching experts. So the presenters made their pitch for roughly 90 minutes at a time. In the same way that front offices hunt for every piece of information and press every advantage in a negotiation, Sasaki came away with analysis from some of the sport’s most progressive organizations, all but one of which he is now tasked with beating.
“It was smart,” said one high-ranking official from a team that presented to Sasaki but did not advance to the final round.
Not everyone viewed it as charitably.
“It was a little bit like, ‘Hey, man, you’re asking for some things that get beyond that line of proprietary,”’ said a decision maker for another club. “It did kind of get to that line a little bit where you’re like, ‘Really?’ But you’ve got to make a decision and then kind of put your best foot forward.”
For the whole story, read on here.
Legends: Bob Uecker dies at 90
There really wasn’t anyone else like Bob Uecker. One of the sport’s most beloved personalities, Uecker died Thursday at 90 years old, having battled small cell lung cancer since early 2023.
It’s kind of perfect that a .200 hitter worth a career -1.0 bWAR earned the nickname “Mr. Baseball.” The voice of the Brewers for the last 53 years, Uecker’s celebrity transcended the greater Wisconsin area. Guest appearances on “Johnny Carson,” a role (as broadcaster Harry Doyle, of course) in “Major League,” numerous appearances on “Mr. Belvedere” and a string of beer commercials helped make him a household name.
Here are our four tributes to the Hall of Fame announcer:
- Grant Brisbee focused on Uecker’s time in the pop culture limelight and how he personified the fun of the game.
- Tyler Kepner tells how Uecker’s humor was what we knew him for, sure, but his humanity was right there beside it. Did you know that both Bob Gibson and Henry Aaron called Uecker to say goodbye on the days they passed away?
- Jayson Stark commemorated Uecker in classic Stark fashion: a list of fun facts about his life and career, both on and off the field.
- And Kamila Hinkson compiled a list of tributes from family and friends, including former Brewers catcher Jonathan Lucroy’s story of a prank Uecker played on him during a fishing trip.
Crystal Ball: Vlad’s future in Toronto
It’s a situation that has been building to a head for over a year now: Will the Blue Jays sign Vladimir Guerrero Jr. to an extension to keep the face of the franchise in Toronto? Or will they determine his price is too high and trade him before he hits free agency?
Given their recent streak of disappointments in attempts to add star power in free agency — Sasaki follows Shohei Ohtani and Juan Soto on a list of players reportedly considering the Blue Jays before signing elsewhere — it seems like they should be a little extra motivated not to start subtracting.
But if you follow the trail of breadcrumbs in this week’s news, you might start to wonder.
Let’s start with another first baseman whose team is in the process of making a stay-or-go decision: Pete Alonso, whose free agency is apparently hitting a tipping point. Reports surfaced this week that the Mets are considering other avenues.
But as part of that reporting, it came to light Thursday that the Blue Jays are now in the mix for Alonso. Later that day, Ken and Will Sammon reported this:
“The Blue Jays have not spoken to Guerrero’s camp about an extension since before Christmas, according to a source briefed on the conversations. However, those talks are expected to accelerate before Guerrero’s self-imposed deadline of Feb. 17, the day before the Jays hold their first full workout for pitchers and position players.”
If the Blue Jays do sign Alonso, it wouldn’t be impossible to roster both guys — Guerrero has played 110 games at third base in the big leagues, and both could take at-bats at DH. But it doesn’t seem like a long-term fit. Either way, it sounds like we’ll have an answer on an extension in less than a month.

The Los Angeles Dodgers make a huge splash in free agency, landing multiple top players to bolster their roster for the upcoming season. But before we dive into the latest signings, let’s take a moment to remember the legendary Bob Uecker.Bob Uecker, former MLB player and beloved broadcaster, passed away at the age of 87. Uecker was known for his quick wit, sense of humor, and iconic catchphrases that made him a fan favorite. He will be dearly missed by baseball fans everywhere.
Now, back to the Dodgers’ big moves in free agency. The team has reportedly signed several top players, including a star pitcher, a power-hitting outfielder, and a reliable closer. These additions are sure to make the Dodgers one of the favorites to win the World Series next season.
Fans are buzzing with excitement over the team’s new acquisitions, and the anticipation for the upcoming season is at an all-time high. With a stacked lineup and a strong pitching staff, the Dodgers are poised to make a deep postseason run and bring home another championship.
As we celebrate the Dodgers’ success in free agency, let’s also take a moment to honor the memory of Bob Uecker, a true legend of the game. His contributions to baseball and his infectious personality will never be forgotten. Rest in peace, Bob.

#Developing #Readers #Workbook #Bob #Books #Paperback #GOOD,ages 3+Bob Nutting won’t sell Pirates, team CEO tells frustrated fans
Pittsburgh Pirates CEO Travis Williams said the organization is committed to winning but declared to frustrated fans that owner Bob Nutting will not sell the team.
Williams addressed fans’ frustration over Nutting’s ownership Saturday during a Q&A session at the Pirates’ annual offseason fan fest.
As Williams was responding to the first question, one fan in attendance shouted, “Sell the team,” prompting some applause from the audience. At that point, several fans started chanting, “Sell the team!”
Greg Brown, the Pirates’ longtime television play-by-play announcer, asked the fans to stop the chant and to “be respectful.” Another fan then asked Williams, who was seated next to Pirates general manager Ben Cherington and manager Derek Shelton, why Nutting was not in attendance.
“We know, at the end of the day, this is all passion that has turned into frustration relative to winning,” Williams said, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. “I think the points that you are making in terms of ‘Where is Bob?’ That’s why he has us here, we’re here to execute and make sure that we win.”
Williams added that Nutting, who has owned the Pirates since 2018, was scheduled to attend the event and interact with fans at some point later Saturday.
“To answer your immediate question that you said earlier, Bob is not going to sell the team,” Williams said. “He cares about Pittsburgh, he cares about winning, he cares about us putting a winning product on the field, and we’re working towards that every day.”
Nutting has been widely criticized by fans and local media in recent years as the Pirates have toiled at or near the bottom of the National League Central standings.
The Pirates went 76-86 last season en route to their fourth last-place finish in the past six seasons. They have not finished with a winning record since 2018, have not reached the playoffs since 2015 and have just three postseason appearances since 1992.
“We know that there is frustration, frustration because we are not winning, with the expectations of winning,” Williams said. “At the end of the day, that’s not due to lack of commitment to want to win.”
Spurred by the arrival of ace pitcher Paul Skenes, the reigning NL Rookie of the Year, the Pirates were 55-52 at the trade deadline last season before a 21-34 free fall through the final two months dropped Pittsburgh to last in the NL Central.
“We can just look at last year,” Williams said. “It was a big positive going through the middle of the season, we were going into August two games above .500, but unfortunately we had a tough run in August and that tough run in August took us out of the hunt for the wild card. … From myself to Ben to Derek to lots of other people that are here today and throughout the entire organization, but that’s not for a lack of commitment or desire to win whatsoever.
“That’s from the top all the way down to the bottom of the organization. We are absolutely committed to win; what we need to do is find a way to win.”
Pittsburgh Pirates fans have been expressing their frustration and disappointment with team owner Bob Nutting for years, pleading with him to sell the team and bring in new ownership. However, those hopes were dashed recently when the team’s CEO announced that Nutting has no intentions of selling the Pirates.Despite the team’s lackluster performance on the field and the constant rebuilding efforts, Nutting seems determined to hold onto the team. This news has only added fuel to the fire for fans who have been calling for change within the organization.
Many fans believe that a change in ownership is necessary in order to turn the team around and bring a winning culture back to Pittsburgh. However, it seems that Nutting has no plans to relinquish control of the team, leaving fans feeling frustrated and hopeless.
As the Pirates continue to struggle on the field, fans will have to come to terms with the fact that Bob Nutting will remain the team’s owner for the foreseeable future. Whether or not this news will finally push fans to stop supporting the team remains to be seen, but one thing is for certain – the frustration and disappointment among Pirates fans is at an all-time high.

#BOB #Books #Deluxe #Reader #Collection,ages 3+TV Q&A: Days may be fewer but hours the same for KDKA-TV’s Bob Pompeani
Q: I’ve noticed lately that KDKA-TV sports anchor Bob Pompeani is appearing on television less than in recent years. He used to be on Sunday-Thursday when football season was in full swing. Now he’s only on Sunday-Tuesday. I was just curious about the reason for the change.
— Zach, via email
Rob: Pompeani is working the same amount as usual but the demands of the sports schedule, especially during Steelers season, necessitate some creative use of paid time off.
“Most of this is PTO based on the inability to take full weeks this time of the year given all the Steelers shows we air,” Pompeani explained. “Those Sunday through Wednesday days are all 12- to 15-hour days … so it’s tough to schedule any vacation time. … But we all understand the requirements of the job and are more than happy to do it … as sports provides the adrenaline to make it fun.”
Q: Is Carl Lam a fill-in at KDKA-TV for weather forecasts or a new hire?
— Elaine, Mt. Lebanon
Rob: Lam is not a new full-time hire at KDKA. He is a traveling freelance meteorologist.
Q: How did “Nate Bargatze’s Nashville Christmas,” produced by Lorne Michaels featuring “Saturday Night Live” cast members and a cameo from NBC star Jimmy Fallon, end up on CBS over NBC?
— John, via Facebook
Rob: Lorne Michaels’ company, Broadway Video, has long produced TV programs for networks other than NBC. While the majority of Broadway Video’s shows are for NBC, the company also makes shows — often but not always with “SNL” stars — for IFC (“Portlandia”), Hulu (“Shrill”), Apple TV+ (“Schmigadoon!”), Max (“The Other Two”), TBS (“Miracle Workers”), FXX (“Man Seeking Woman”), HBO (“Los Espookys”) and Comedy Central (“Detroiters”).
I don’t know the specifics around Bargatze’s Christmas special and it’s not a question I’m likely to get a network response to anytime (and especially not during the holidays when all of Hollywood is on vacation until Jan. 6), but my best guess is CBS was simply more interested in buying the show than NBC. This year CBS had more one-off Christmas specials while NBC stuck largely to its recurring specials (“Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade,” “Christmas in Rockefeller Center,” “Jimmy Fallon’s Holiday Spectacular,” etc.).
