Trump tariffs booed in Canada as Trudeau calls for national unity
Nadine YousifBBC News, Toronto
Reuters
A few hours after US President Donald Trump announced that he would impose steep tariffs on Canada, hockey fans in the capital Ottawa booed the Star-Spangled Banner during a National Hockey League game against a visiting US team.
On Sunday, during a National Basketball League game between the Toronto Raptors and the Los Angeles Clippers, it happened again, continuing throughout the song and almost drowning out the 15-year-old’s singer’s arena performance.
The vocal displeasure from usually respectful fans is a clear sign of Canadians’ deep dismay at Trump’s move to hit its nearest ally with punitive taxes, a move that threatens to spark an unprecedented trade war on the North American continent.
The 25% tariffs imposed by Trump on all Canadian imports into the US – with a lower 10% levy on energy – are set to take effect on Tuesday.
And they come as President Trump doubles down on his push – no longer dismissed as a joke – for Canada to join America and become the 51st state.
While many economists project the tariffs will also drive up costs for Americans on everyday essentials, from gas to groceries, Canada is the more exposed trade partner. If they last for months, the country could tip into a painful economic recession.
Anger is building – and with it, a desire to mount a fightback that has been echoed by political leaders in the country of 40 million.
“Many among us will be affected by this, and we will have some hard times. I ask you to be there for each other,” said Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in a Saturday evening address. “Now is the time to choose Canada.”
Some Canadians have already heeded the calls for solidarity. On social media, guides are circulating on how to avoid American-made products at the grocery store.
Others are posting about cancelling travel plans to the US, or boycotting the country all together.
In some Canadian provinces – namely Ontario, the largest by population – American booze will be pulled off the shelves indefinitely starting on Tuesday.
This is in addition to a total of C$155bn ($105bn; £86bn) of American goods that Canada has said it will tariff in retaliation, including vegetables, clothing, sports equipment, perfume and other items. Goods originating from Republican-led states, like Florida orange juice, are specifically being targeted.
The US imports more of its oil from Canada than any other country, and Trudeau’s government has signalled “all options remain on the table” for further retaliation.
A ‘destabilising’ moment for Canada
Trump’s follow-through on his threat of steep tariffs – which were long speculated to be a negotiation tactic to get concessions on border security – have bewildered Canadians, who have enjoyed close economic, social and security ties to the US for decades.
“It’s a shock,” Michael Ignatieff, the former leader of Canada’s Liberal Party, told the BBC.
“We’re into a new world, in which the question on whether you can trust America becomes the fundamental question in foreign policy for every country.”
Pierre Poilievre, leader of Canada’s opposition Conservative Party, called the tariffs on Sunday “massive, unjust and unjustified.”
“Canada is the United States’ closest neighbour, greatest ally and best friend,” he said, noting that Canada fought alongside the US in two world wars, as well as in Korea and Afghanistan. “There is no justification whatsoever for this treatment.”
Prime Minister Trudeau questioned in his Saturday address why the US would target Canada instead of looking to “more challenging parts” of the world.
A portion of his speech was directly addressed to Americans, and he too, pointed to a history of shared bloodshed. “We have fought, and died, alongside you,” Trudeau said.
Thomas Juneau, a professor at the University of Ottawa with a focus on national security, told the BBC that Trump’s tariffs “undoubtedly represent an earthquake in Canada-US relations.”
“This is extremely destabilising for Canada,” Prof Juneau said. “As a country, we have massively benefited from our extremely close trade and security partnership with the US for decades.”
While the trade battle would likely force Canada to look for partners elsewhere, it ultimately can’t escape geography, he said. It will remain reliant on the economic superpower next door.
“That is why Canada must absolutely now focus on salvaging the relationship as much as possible,” Prof Juneau said.
An unclear, costly fight ahead
The big unknown remains how long the US will keep the tariffs in place, and what steps Canada could take to appease the Trump administration, which has said it expects action on cross-border fentanyl trafficking and illegal migration.
TD Economics projects that the longer the tariffs remain in place, the worse the impact will be. Canada could enter a recession in five to six months, and its unemployment rate could hit more than 7%.
Theo Argitis, managing director of the Ottawa-based public affairs firm Compass Rose Group, said the unknowns had left Canada no choice “but to hit (Trump) back hard.”
“At the end of the day, we don’t even really know why he’s doing this,” Mr Argitis told the BBC.
Trump says the flow of fentanyl, a highly potent and deadly drug, into the US from Canada and Mexico, is one key reason. US officials say the levies will remain in place “until the crisis is alleviated.”
In response, the Canadian government has noted that less than 1% of fentanyl and illegal border crossings into the US come from Canada. It has offered to spend an additional C$1.3bn to secure the US-Canada border
But Trump has also spoken publicly about his frustration with the trade deficit between Canada and the US, and more broadly his view that tariffs could be a source of revenue for Washington’s coffers.
On Sunday, he wrote on Truth Social that the US does not need Canadian products, and said the US pays “hundreds of billions of dollars to subsidize Canada.”
“Without this massive subsidy, Canada ceases to exist as a viable country,” Trump wrote, before repeating his view that Canada should instead become a US state.
He has warned that the White House will enact harsher penalties on Canada should it choose to retaliate. For now, Canada has chosen to try and inflict some targeted pain on its more powerful neighbour, even if the economic scales are tipped against it.
“We prefer to solve our disputes with diplomacy,” Trudeau told his country on Saturday. “But we are ready to fight when necessary.”
As tensions rise between the United States and Canada over President Trump’s tariffs on Canadian goods, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has called for national unity in response to the controversial measures. At a recent town hall event in Ottawa, Trudeau was met with cheers as he defended Canada’s trade policies and criticized the Trump administration’s decision to impose tariffs on steel and aluminum imports.Trudeau’s remarks come as Canada prepares to retaliate with its own tariffs on American products, escalating a trade war that has strained relations between the two neighboring countries. The prime minister urged Canadians to stand together in the face of adversity and to support their government’s efforts to protect Canadian industries from unfair trade practices.
Meanwhile, Trump’s tariffs have been met with widespread criticism in Canada, with many Canadians expressing their disapproval of the measures. At a recent hockey game in Ottawa, fans booed as a video highlighting the impact of the tariffs on Canadian jobs and industries was played on the jumbotron.
As the trade dispute between the United States and Canada continues to escalate, Trudeau’s call for national unity has struck a chord with many Canadians who are concerned about the potential economic repercussions of the tariffs. With tensions running high, it remains to be seen how the two countries will navigate their increasingly strained relationship in the coming months.

What Mike Woodson said about being booed, chants for him to be fired
BLOOMINGTON — Having recently returned from winter break, Indiana students made it clear they were deeply disappointed with the state of the IU basketball program throughout the course of a 94-69 loss to Illinois on Tuesday night at Assembly Hall.
They started chanting “Fire Woodson” midway through the first half as the Hoosiers trailed by as many as 30 points and restarted the chant multiple times even as another section of the arena tried (and failed) to drown them out with chants of “Go IU” during one timeout.
While the attendance fell far short of the announced sellout (17,222), the lower bowl was mostly full at tipoff. The same couldn’t be said coming out of halftime after droves of fans headed to the exits and left large portions of the arena empty.
“I love our fans and I respect our fans, but it’s up to me to get our players to play at a high level,” IU coach Mike Woodson said. “That’s my job and I’m going to continue to work in that area and hope that our fans will hang in there with us.”
Doyel:IU basketball is disintegrating, and Mike Woodson doesn’t seem to realize it.
It was a different tone than Woodson had last year when he addressed fans at Assembly Hall during senior day festivities and thanked the “true, true fans.”
“And I am the coach here,” he said at the time. “Understand that. I’m not going anywhere.”
Indiana forward Luke Goode, who was facing his former team Tuesday, also addressed the fanbase’s obvious disappointment.
“I understand it,” Goode said. “We got embarrassed. We have to wear this jersey with more pride as Indiana players. This program is too historical and too great to be represented like that.”
Woodson acknowledged the team’s record during his tenure against top competition has fallen short. He’s 76-45 at his alma mater in three-plus seasons, but just 35-32 in the Big Ten during and 14-31 record against Quad 1 opponents. The Hoosiers are combined 31-41 against Quad 1 and 2 opponents.
They have also lost six conference games by 20 points or more and 13 games by 15 points or more.
“We’ve had some good games against big time opponents over the three years,” Woodson said. “The record doesn’t indicate that.”
Woodson said he’s keeping his focus solely on the this season as he looks to navigate IU out of its recent slump. Things don’t get any easier for the Hoosiers as they play four of their next five games on the road and face a string of top 25 opponents — No. 15 Purdue, No. 19 Michigan and No. 12 Michigan State — in the coming weeks.
“Long season, man,” Woodson said with a sigh. “I mean, you can’t throw in the towel.”

Former Indiana University men’s basketball coach, Mike Woodson, recently addressed the boos and chants for him to be fired during a press conference. Woodson, who was let go by the university after a disappointing season, admitted that the negative reactions from fans were difficult to hear.“I understand that the fans are passionate and want to see the team succeed,” Woodson said. “But it’s never easy to be on the receiving end of boos and chants calling for your job. I wish things had turned out differently, but I respect the decision that was made.”
Woodson also expressed gratitude for the opportunity to coach at Indiana University and thanked the players, staff, and fans for their support throughout his tenure.
“I have nothing but love for the Hoosier Nation,” Woodson added. “I will always cherish my time at Indiana and the memories we created together. I wish the team and the university nothing but success moving forward.”
While it may be a bittersweet ending for Mike Woodson, his professionalism and grace in the face of adversity have not gone unnoticed by fans and supporters.

Danielle Collins taunts ‘super drunk’ Australian Open fans who booed during her win over home favorite
CNN
—
Danielle Collins appeared to revel in playing the part of pantomime villain at the Australian Open on Thursday as she took down home favorite Destanee Aiava 7-6, 4-6, 6-2 in front of a raucous crowd.
The American was booed and jeered during the match and responded by cupping her ear and blowing kisses towards the crowd after securing the victory.
As she made her way back the chair, Collins continued to blow kisses in all directions before kissing her hand and slapping her buttocks.
Despite the hostilities towards her, the No. 10 seed said she “loved” playing in that atmosphere.
“I’ve been doing this my whole life and I love playing in a crowd that has energy, regardless of what side they’re on,” Collins told reporters. “I’m somebody, too, that it just motivates me even more so it’s kind of a good thing, especially when I’m not playing that well.
“So I think it really helped me in the end and just helped me concentrate more, and challenged me at times, and just pushed me through the finish line.
“I was really happy in the end when I finally got momentum. I was like: ‘Well, if I’m going to be out here for two and a half hours, putting up with all these people, I might as well just take the bigger paycheck. I was super happy to do that.”
Collins added that there were “a lot of people that were super drunk,” which she thought further contributed to a boisterous atmosphere.
The 31-year-old was also booed throughout her on-court interview after beating Australia’s Aiava, the world No. 165 who came through qualifying, but continued to egg the crowd on.
“You know I was thinking during the match,” she said to the crowd, “I was like: ‘Hmm, if I’m out here I might as well just take that big fat paycheck. We love a five-star vacation, so part of that check is going towards that.
“So thank you guys, thanks for coming out here and supporting us tonight,” she added to another loud chorus of boos.
Collins will receive 290,000 Australian dollars ($180,000) for reaching the third round and joked that it’s “all going towards the Danielle Collins fund.”
She added: “One of the greatest things about being a professional athlete is that the people that don’t like you and the people that hate you, they actually pay your bills.”
“It’s kind of a cool concept. My professional career is not going to last forever so I just remind myself every day when I have that kind of stuff (the crowd against her) they’re paying my bills.
“Me and my group of girlfriends, we love a five-star vacation. I can guarantee you that check is going towards our next five-star trip, hopefully to the Bahamas.
“We like boats, we like big boats, we like yachts, so we’ll post about it and let you guys know how it goes.”
Collins, who postponed her retirement at the end of 2024, will face compatriot and No. 19 seed Madison Keys in the third round on Saturday.
The two-time NCAA champion originally retired due to a number of health issues, including rheumatoid arthritis and endometriosis, and her desire to start a family.
Novak Djokovic, a 10-time Australian Open champion, told reporters he was a “big fan” of how Collins responded after getting into his own back-and-forth with one particularly loud member of the crowd during his third-round win over Tomáš Macháč on Friday.
“I loved her response. I loved it. Everything she said on the court, off the court. Big fan of Danielle Collins after that. I was before. But now? Big fan. I love it,” the 37-year-old said.
“I heard some comments (from) people that she shouldn’t have said (this) or that. I think she handled it really well. I don’t think I would be that polite, and I know exactly the feeling. So I think she was funny, smart.
“Just a big fan of what she did. Big fan.”
On Friday at the Australian Open, Naomi Osaka was forced to retire from her third-round match against Belinda Bencic.
Osaka was leading 5-2 in the first set before she began struggling with another apparent abdominal injury, allowing Bencic to come back and take the set on a tie break.
Osaka, who also pulled out of the ASB Classic final in Auckland last week with an abdominal injury, received treatment during the match but was eventually forced to withdraw.
Danielle Collins, the feisty American tennis player, did not hold back in addressing the rowdy Australian Open fans who booed during her match against home favorite Ashleigh Barty. Collins, who ultimately emerged victorious in a hard-fought battle, took to social media to taunt the “super drunk” spectators who had disrupted the match. In her post, Collins called out the disrespectful behavior of the fans and emphasized the importance of sportsmanship and respect in the game of tennis. She also expressed gratitude to those in the crowd who supported her and cheered her on throughout the match.
Collins’ bold response to the unruly fans quickly garnered attention and praise from fellow players and fans alike. Her unwavering determination and outspoken nature have solidified her reputation as a force to be reckoned with on the tennis court.
Despite the negative reception from some spectators, Collins’ win over Barty was a testament to her skill and resilience as a player. As she advances further in the tournament, it is clear that she will not be deterred by any distractions or challenges that come her way.

Why is Danielle Collins being booed at the 2025 Australian Open?
Danielle Collins has become known for being a feisty character and not afraid to stand up for herself. And that certainly came across in her second round clash at the 2025 Australian Open in Melbourne against home favourite Destanee Aiava. The American was roundly booed by a hostile crowd following her victory in a controversial match.
The 10th seed clashed with fans on several occasions during her 7-6, 4-6, 6-2 triumph.
“Shut up!”: Danielle Collins clashes with fans in Melbourne
During the first game of the second set, Collins felt spectators had failed to stay silent as she was serving at 15-30 down, telling them to “shut up!”. That led to jeers from sections of the crowd, and to Aiava securing a crucial break as she went on to to take the set.
The atmosphere was tense from that moment onwards, with Collins adding fuel to the fire by blowing kisses to fans after winning certain points.
The 31-year-old closing out the match in the third set was greeted by loud boos from all around the court, which Collins responded to by cupping her ears Hulk Hogan-style and blowing more kisses to the stands.
Collins brings Coco Gauff into provocative post-match interview
The jeering continued throughout her post-match interview, which the American again reacted to in provocative fashion.
“I was thinking during the match, if I’m out here, I may as well take that big, fat pay check. Coco (Gauff) and I love, we LOVE, a good five-star vacation, so part of that check is gonna go towards that, so thank you, guys, thanks for coming out here. Thanks for supporting us tonight”.
Her “thank you, guys, love ya!” sign-off endeared even further to those in attendance, although a good number of those watching and listening on did appear to find her “performance” amusing.
Collins sets up all-American third-round clash
The Floridian will take on compatriot Madison Keys in the third round of the 2025 Australian Open and we can probably already guess which player will have most of the fans’ backing…

As the 2025 Australian Open kicks off, fans are buzzing not just about the incredible matches on the court, but also about the surprising turn of events involving American tennis player Danielle Collins. Despite her impressive skills and previous successes in the sport, Collins has been met with boos and jeers from the crowd during her matches. So, why exactly is Danielle Collins being booed at the 2025 Australian Open? The answer lies in her recent controversial comments and behavior off the court. In a series of interviews and social media posts, Collins has been vocal about her disdain for certain players, officials, and even fans. Her brash and confrontational attitude has rubbed many tennis enthusiasts the wrong way, leading to a negative reception from the Australian Open crowd.
While some may argue that Collins is simply being true to herself and speaking her mind, others believe that her behavior is disrespectful and unsportsmanlike. Whatever the case may be, one thing is for certain: Danielle Collins is not winning any popularity contests at this year’s Australian Open.
As the tournament continues, it will be interesting to see how Collins handles the backlash and whether she can turn the tide of public opinion in her favor. Will she be able to win over the crowd with her performance on the court, or will her controversial antics continue to overshadow her tennis prowess? Only time will tell.

Manchester United host Newcastle United in the Premier League this evening, with the home side desperate for three points as they look to rise from 14th in the table.
Ruben Amorim’s team has fallen to embarrassing defeats to Bournemouth and Wolves over the last two matches, and the Portuguese has just two wins in the league so far during his tenure. And United face a Newcastle side who have found form in recent weeks, with consecutive 4-0 wins followed by a 3-0 victory over Aston Villa last time out.
After a mixed start to the season, the Magpies find themselves in seventh ahead of kick-off, with the potential to move into fifth if they grab three points tonight. And with the recent form of both sides, Newcastle have rarely had a better chance to earn a first league win at Old Trafford since 2013. Follow all the latest updates from Old Trafford below:
54’ – Man Utd 0-2 Newcastle
Joelinton wins a free-kick and Newcastle squander the chance to trouble Onana – haven’t really had the fluency in their play over the last 15 minutes either side of the interval.
Hojlund escapes his man in the box and tees up an Amad shot but Tonali makes the block.
More reason for optimism for the home fans since the restart but no big chances for them and nothing for Dubravka to worry about.
Antony, Rashford and Garnacho are all on the bench for United.

50’ – Man Utd 0-2 Newcastle
The home team have played far more aggressively and on the front foot since the restart. A good cross from Mazraoui on the right sees Schar forced into an awkward clearance behind for a corner under pressure. Eriksen’s corner goes through everyone – could have been a tap-in if a red shirt was in place. Newcastle need to heed the warnings here.
Karl Matchett30 December 2024 21:10
46′ – Man Utd 0-2 Newcastle
Back underway and no further changes but both managers probably had plenty to say. Eddie Howe may have had a few words on concentration and not letting things drift, after that final five minutes of the first half.

Man Utd fans boo Zirkzee as striker subbed off early against Newcastle
Manchester United fans booed and jeered their own player on Monday night, as Joshua Zirkzee bore the brunt of supporters’ displeasure during a dismal first half against Newcastle United.
The Red Devils had been thoroughly outplayed and were 2-0 down on home soil to the Magpies, with another strike ruled out for offside and Newcastle also striking the woodwork in a woefully one-sided first half.
That prompted Ruben Amorim to turn to his subs bench after just 32 minutes, with Zirkzee replaced by Kobbie Mainoo in an attempt to beef up the centre of the pitch, where the hosts had been second best by a long distance.
Zirkzee immediately faced extremely loud cheers at the decision to remove him, followed by an equally loud round of boos as he left the pitch. The Dutch attacker didn’t take his place to sit on the bench, but immediately appeared to don a coat and depart towards the tunnel – only to reappear a few minutes later.
During his half-hour or so on the pitch, Zirkzee managed just 14 touches of the ball, completed three passes and won one free-kick, but had no impact in terms of creating or taking shots.
Karl Matchett30 December 2024 20:59
HT – Man Utd 0-2 Newcastle
One late chance for United – Mainoo frees Casemiro in the box but his first-time shot is curled well wide. He had time there, not a great effort. Let-off for Newcastle after Schar gave the ball away – but the whistle goes and it’s 2-0 to the visitors at the interval.
Half time, Newcastle well in control. Another loud chorus of boos from the home fans as the whistle goes.
Richard Jolly’s latest: “A dreadful first half for Manchester United. The mixture of cheers and boos when Joshua Zirkzee was hauled off after half an hour are a sign of what the crowd think of him. It is hard to see how he can come back from that, or how United can come back in this game.”
Karl Matchett30 December 2024 20:49
45’ – Man Utd 0-2 Newcastle
Two shots and two touches in the box for Man United in this first half. They simply haven’t been at it in the slightest.
Karl Matchett30 December 2024 20:46
40’ – Man Utd 0-2 Newcastle
Well the good news for Manchester United is that with five minutes to go until half time, they are 2-0 down.
And yes, that’s good news – it should be three at a minimum, it could easily be five, and they’ll soon have 15 minutes to sort things out a bit.
Ruben Amorim has a massive job on his hands to get them back in the game – Eddie Howe must want more of the same. They are swarming United at will, until about five minutes ago.
Karl Matchett30 December 2024 20:43
36’ – Man Utd 0-2 Newcastle
Richard Jolly’s scathing and accurate assessment of the hosts:
“Utter dominance from Newcastle, utterly awful from Manchester United. Ruben Amorim’s team are being overrun in midfield – no surprise when it is Casemiro and Christian Eriksen against Sandro Tonali, Bruno Guimaraes and Joelinton – and their five defenders are struggling to defend. Neither goal reflected well on Lisandro Martinez, who isn’t exactly looking an inspired choice to captain the team in Bruno Fernandes’ absence. Newcastle could score six or seven here.”
Karl Matchett30 December 2024 20:37
34’ – Man Utd 0-2 Newcastle
Joshua Zirkzee has just been given whatever the absolute rock bottom opposite is to a standing ovation – the most vicious, vociferous booing and jeering by his own supporters as he’s subbed off for Kobbie Mainoo.
This Man United team is “the absolute worst pound for pound football team in the country, bar none,” says Gary Neville.
Moments later Hojlund is played in for a first sight of goal at last and can only clip his shot past the far post.
Karl Matchett30 December 2024 20:35
30’ – Man Utd 0-2 Newcastle
The ball’s in the net again – but the offside flag is up this time. We’ve seen this kind of thing before given: basically a Schar shot is deflected into his path by a United defender, so Isak – way offside in normal terms – plays on and absolutely blams it top corner. But the flag is up and the ref sides with his assistant.
One minute later and Newcastle are so close to a brilliant third, passing straight through United’s back three with some amazing one-touch football – Tonali gets past Onana but thunders a shot onto the post from close-range. Amorim isn’t waiting around, he’s making a sub soon.
United have been utterly woeful.

‘That is brutal’ – Man United’s £36m signing Joshua Zirkzee humiliatingly hauled off after 30 minutes and booed by own fans
Joshua Zirkzee was sarcastically cheered off by Manchester United fans when he was substituted in the first half against Newcastle.
The Dutch forward started the match but was brought off for Kobbie Mainoo on 33 minutes with the Magpies 2-0 up.
Zirkzee was substituted with just over half an hour playedCredit: Getty Zirkzee walked up to the United bench and grabbed a coat before walking along the side of the pitch.
Fans in the stands at Old Trafford could be heard jeering the 23-year-old as he made his way off the pitch before he disappeared down the tunnel.
This was momentarily though as Zirkzee returned to the dugout as United played the rest of the first half in need of a response.
Red Devils legend Gary Neville said on commentary for Sky Sports: “I actually feel sorry for him, I really do.
MORE ON THE PREMIER LEAGUE
“I know that he’s earning a lot of money, but there’s a human being in there that’s basically being cheered off by his own fans.
“That is brutal. I’ve not seen that too many times at Old Trafford in the 43 years I’ve been coming here.”
He added: “He’s had enough and I actually don’t blame him, [it’s] a massive embarrassment.
“I hope some of the fans down there give him a little something. He hasn’t played well let’s be clear, they’ve all been absolutely awful.”
Neville also called United the ‘worst pound-for-pound team in the country’ as their issues were on show once again.
Alexander Isak opened the scoring for Newcastle with an unmarked header with only four minutes on the clock.
The United forward walked down the tunnel at Old Trafford before returningCredit: Getty Joelinton doubled the visitors’ lead later in the half, with Sandro Tonali coming so close to a third but he could only hit the post.
United fans were heard booing at the half-time whistle following an opening 45 in which they were way off the pace.
Defeat would be Ruben Amorim’s sixth from 11 matches since he became head coach in November.
It would also extended United’s losing streak to four across all competitions as the problems continue to mount.
Amorim may call upon Marcus Rashford in the second half if needed after amid his return to the squad from a four-match absence.
Manchester United’s latest signing Joshua Zirkzee had a rough start to his career at Old Trafford as he was humiliatingly hauled off after just 30 minutes in his debut match. The £36m striker was met with boos from his own fans as he struggled to make an impact on the game. Many fans took to social media to express their disappointment in Zirkzee’s performance, with some even calling for him to be dropped from the team altogether. The young striker will no doubt be feeling the pressure to prove his worth to the club and its supporters after such a brutal debut.
Only time will tell if Zirkzee can bounce back from this setback and show his true potential on the pitch. But for now, it seems that his first taste of Premier League football has been anything but sweet.

Joshua Zirkzee suffered a nightmare display for Manchester United after being hauled off on barely 30 minutes of play against Newcastle on Monday evening.
With United 2-0 down after 19 minutes at Old Trafford, Ruben Amorim took drastic action to try get his side back into the contest.
And that meant taking off Zirkzee, who was booed by United fans as he made his way off the pitch.
The Netherlands international did not hang around to hear the reception, making his way down the tunnel before being spotted with his coat on.

Kobbie Mainoo was brought on in Zirkzee’s spot, who was guilty of not tracking back enough with glaring holes in United’s midfield.
Zirkzee did eventually return to sit on the bench while United legend Gary Neville offered some sympathy to the forward.

A dramatic 2-1 victory over Manchester City failed to spark any sort of momentum, losing days after to Tottenham in the Carabao Cup.
The Red Devils were then thrashed 3-0 at home by Old Trafford before losing to Wolves, who had just replaced Gary O’Neil with Vitor Pereira.

With the January transfer window set to open in two days, it remains to be seen whether Amorim will be backed financially.
The Portuguese coach has arrived with a very distinct style of football that is almost at odds with his predecessor Erik ten Hag.
However, with results turning south so quickly, even Amorim has admitted he might already be on borrowed time.
In a shocking turn of events during the Newcastle vs. Manchester United match, young striker Joshua Zirkzee was booed by Man Utd fans and stormed down the tunnel in frustration. The 20-year-old had been struggling to make an impact on the game, missing several key chances in front of goal. As the frustration grew among the fans, Zirkzee was met with a chorus of boos every time he touched the ball.
Unable to handle the pressure, Zirkzee had had enough and decided to storm down the tunnel before the final whistle blew. This move only further angered the fans, who felt he was showing a lack of commitment to the team.
The incident has left many questioning Zirkzee’s future at the club and whether he will be able to bounce back from this disappointing performance. Only time will tell if he can regain the trust and support of the fans.
