The artificial intelligence boom has turbocharged demand for electricity, and everyone who is anyone in the U.S. energy industry wants a piece of the action.
The latest entrant is Chevron, the country’s second-largest oil and gas company, which sees opportunity in building natural gas-fueled power plants that will feed energy directly to data centers.
Chevron is working with Engine No. 1, a San Francisco-based investment firm best known for waging a successful proxy battle against Exxon Mobil in 2021. The companies say they have ordered critical equipment, scouted potential sites and can have their first plant online within three years.
“It’s a chance for us to help meet the moment and address this growing need for reliable and affordable power,” Mike Wirth, Chevron’s chief executive, said in an interview.
Chevron’s announcement is the latest example of just how much the promise of A.I. — a voracious electricity consumer — is reshaping the economy. Oil producers are recalibrating their strategies and leaning into power generation, a business that many of them had previously sworn off because it was much less profitable than drilling and processing oil and gas. Just last month, Exxon said that it, too, wanted to get into the business of selling electricity to data centers.
But in a reminder that the prospects for A.I. data centers and growing electricity demand are highly uncertain, technology and energy stocks tumbled on Monday. Investors were unnerved by the stunning advances in A.I. made by an unfamiliar Chinese start-up, DeepSeek, that said it had made its gains using a modest number of computer chips that consumed relatively little energy. Shares of chip-maker Nvidia tumbled 17 percent and the stock of Constellation Energy, a large power producer, closed down more than 20 percent.
“There’s always the potential for markets to surprise you,” Mr. Wirth said. But he added that being early to market and keeping its costs low would protect Chevron against the possibility that power demand growth falls short of current expectations.
His company is hardly alone.
Many power producers are bulking up, and many are investing in natural gas generating capacity specifically. Constellation, which has a large fleet of nuclear power plants, agreed this month to buy rival Calpine, which owns many natural gas plants, for $16.4 billion. And last week, NextEra Energy said it was planning to build more gas-fueled power plants.
Expectations for how much and how quickly U.S. electricity demand will rise vary widely. What’s clear is that data centers are likely to consume a lot more of the country’s power than they do today. A recent study by the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory estimated that the facilities are poised to use up to 12 percent of U.S. electricity in 2028, up from 4.4 percent in 2023.
Chevron and Engine No. 1 said they have reserved seven gas turbines from GE Vernova, one of the companies created by the breakup of General Electric. The equipment is set to be delivered beginning in 2026. Chevron and Engine No. 1, which did not say how much they plan to spend, have been in talks with prospective customers and expect to build up to four gigawatts of gas-generating capacity.
Natural gas-fired power plants cost around $2 billion per gigawatt, Morgan Stanley recently estimated.
In this case, the plants would be located alongside the data centers they power. Like Exxon, the partners expect their facilities would not be connected to the electric grid to start, so the plants can get up and running more quickly. It can take years for grid managers to approve connection requests.
Eventually though, they aim to secure grid hookups, said Chris James, Engine No. 1’s chief investment officer. “A grid interconnect allows us to be able to supply power back to the grid when it needs it,” he said.
Technology giants like Microsoft and Google have set targets to get all of their energy from sources that do not contribute to climate change after taking into account carbon capture and other technologies. But some tech companies now say that they will be hard-pressed to get all the power they need in the next few years without relying on natural gas, which produces carbon dioxide when it is burned. The greenhouse gas is the leading cause of climate change.
“It’s this valley between now and then that leaves a lot of people scratching their heads and realizing that if you don’t lean on gas, the answer might be worse,” said Jesse Noffsinger, a partner at the consulting firm McKinsey & Company.
Chevron and Engine No. 1 said their plants could be built in several regions. They have ruled out the East Coast because of infrastructure constraints and feedback from potential customers.
The companies also looked for sites able to accommodate the capturing and sequestering carbon dioxide emissions, said Mr. James.
The companies don’t plan to incorporate that technology or renewable energy at the outset, however.
“We’re very confident that over time as the policy environment clarifies itself, as we make good progress on technology development, that some of these other alternatives will be part of it,” Mr. Wirth said.
Chevron, one of the world’s largest energy companies, is looking to capitalize on the growing demand for artificial intelligence (A.I.) by selling electricity to data centers. With the rapid expansion of A.I. technologies and the increasing need for more computing power, data centers are consuming massive amounts of electricity.Chevron sees this as an opportunity to leverage its expertise in the energy sector and provide a reliable source of power to data centers. The company is exploring ways to optimize its operations and infrastructure to meet the specific needs of data centers, such as providing uninterrupted power supply and implementing energy-efficient solutions.
By tapping into the A.I. boom and catering to the needs of data centers, Chevron aims to diversify its revenue streams and position itself as a key player in the growing digital economy. This strategic move could not only benefit the company financially but also contribute to the development of sustainable energy solutions for the tech industry.
As the demand for data centers continues to rise, Chevron’s initiative to sell electricity to these facilities could prove to be a win-win situation for both parties. Stay tuned to see how this innovative approach unfolds in the coming years.

Your guide to what the 2024 US election means for Washington and the world
Cutting red tape, unleashing, debottlenecking — these are all great business-friendly policies. They work wonders on industries previously fettered by regulation. But there is little evidence that this has been the case for US fossil fuels. That suggests President Donald Trump’s efforts to expedite oil and gas projects will deliver a trickle, not a flood.
Oil producers have been “drill, baby, drilling” for quite some time. In 2024, US oil production averaged 13.2mn barrels a day, making it the largest oil producer in the world. That’s two-and-a-half times what the country was producing in 2008. The supply of US gas, too, has roughly doubled during that period.
True, this breakneck pace cannot continue forever. The industry will add an extra 270,000 barrels a day on average in 2025 and 2026, according to consultancy Argus Media, roughly a quarter of what it squeezed out in 2023. But that largely reflects the fact that a lot of the best acreage has already been exploited.
Trumpian policies, like encouraging drilling in US coastal waters, will open up new territories. Even if they contain exploitable resources, though, the time it takes to develop a project extends beyond the length of a single four-year presidential term. This is no short-term fix.
Unfortunately for Trump, what inhibits the flow of oil is not red tape, but low prices. Producing oil from US shale formations is relatively expensive. Companies need prices to be somewhere between $60 and $80 a barrel if they want to cover all their costs and pay dividends, estimates Christopher Wheaton at Stifel.
Shale is also highly sensitive to commodity price moves because, unlike traditional projects in which much of the cost is sunk upfront, maintaining shale output requires constant spending. By way of example, the record low price for US natural gas in 2024 has already caused production to nudge lower.
That rather limits Trump’s room for manoeuvre, at least with oil. Gas may be a bit more responsive, given there is some hope that strong demand, not least from data centres, and the resumption of LNG export permitting might raise domestic prices. That would help producers justify more supply.
As it stands, the oil market is hardly undersupplied. A spluttering China translates into weak demand. Opec+, which wants to see prices stay high, is sufficiently worried that it is actively holding back supply. That means that any increase in US oil production is likely to push down prices and thus be shortlived. The only thing gushing in the oil patch is rhetoric.
The recent increase in shale oil and gas production in the United States has been touted as a major success of the Trump administration’s energy policies. However, it is important to recognize that this shale boom is not solely the result of Donald Trump’s actions, and it is not his gift to give. The shale boom has been driven by a combination of technological advancements, market forces, and the hard work of countless individuals in the energy industry. Hydraulic fracturing, or “fracking,” has revolutionized the extraction of oil and gas from shale formations, making previously inaccessible reserves economically viable.
Furthermore, the shale boom is a result of private sector investment and innovation, not government intervention. While the Trump administration has rolled back regulations and opened up federal lands for drilling, the majority of shale development has occurred on private lands and was already well underway before Trump took office.
It is important to recognize that the shale boom is not a gift from any one individual or administration. It is the result of a complex interplay of factors that have come together to create a thriving industry. While Trump may claim credit for the increase in shale production, it is important to remember that this boom is not his to give – it is a product of the hard work and ingenuity of the American energy sector.

#shale #boom #Donald #Trumps #gift #giveBoom: America’s answer to Concorde prepares for first supersonic flight

CNN
—
The return of supersonic travel has been remarkably slow for something faster than the speed of sound, but a major milestone is set to be hit on January 28.
Boom Supersonic, the American company building what promises to be the world’s fastest airliner, is preparing to break the sound barrier for the first time with a test flight at 7.45 a.m. local time in Mojave, California.
The XB-1 demonstrator aircraft, which has completed 11 successful test flights since it first took to the air in March 2024, is the precursor to the development of Boom’s supersonic commercial airliner, Overture.
The hotly anticipated plane already has 130 orders and pre-orders from American Airlines, United Airlines and Japan Airlines.
A livestream will record what should be a historic moment for the first civil supersonic jet built in America and the world’s first independently developed supersonic jet.
The aircraft, which is usually flown by Boom’s chief test pilot Tristan “Gepetto” Brandenburg, will — if all goes to plan — accelerate to Mach 1.1 (around 844 miles per hour / 1,358 kilometers per hour) after reaching target altitude.
The fastest speed the XB-1 has reached so far is Mach 0.95, just below the supersonic threshold of Mach 1, which it hit during its last test flight on January 10.
When the XB-1 takes off from the Mojave Air and Space Port it will be in the same historic airspace where legendary pilot Chuck Yeager broke the sound barrier for the first time in 1947.
It’s now almost 55 years since the 002 prototype for Concorde first flew at Mach 1 on March 25, 1970, and more than 21 years since commercial supersonic travel ended with the Anglo-French airliner’s final flight in November 2023.
There have been several challengers in the supersonic space while the remaining Concordes gather dust at museums in the UK, US and France, but so far no one has succeeded.
Boom Supersonic’s ambitions remain high. CEO Blake Scholl told CNN last year that he expects supersonic planes to replace conventional airliners in our lifetime.
“I very much believe in the return of supersonic air travel, and ultimately to bring it to every passenger on every route. And that’s not something that takes place overnight,” he said in March 2024.
Boom’s plan is that Overture will be in operation before the end of the decade, carrying 64 to 80 passengers at Mach 1.7, about twice the speed of today’s subsonic airliners.
Back when CNN Travel spoke with Scholl in May 2021, he told us his dream was for people to one day be able to “fly anywhere in the world in four hours for $100.” In 2024, he confirmed that was still his “north star.”
The company’s plan is for Overture to one day operate on more than 600 routes worldwide.
“A faster airplane is much more human-efficient, and it’s much more capital-efficient. You can do more flights, with the same airplane and crew,” Scholl said.
“We can significantly reduce all of the cost and impact that goes into airplanes by making them faster. if we have faster airplanes, we don’t need as many.”
The XB-1 test craft has been used to prove new technologies developed by Boom Supersonic.
Like Concorde, the XB-1 and Overture both have a long nose and a high angle of attack for takeoff and landing, which interrupts the pilots’ view of the runway.
While Concorde dealt with this by having a moveable droop nose, Boom’s augmented reality vision system enables excellent runway visibility for the pilots without that extra weight and complexity.
“The advent of digital engineering is a huge enabler for why supersonic flight’s coming back,” Scholl told CNN in 2024. “Aerodynamics, materials, propulsion: Those are the big three areas where we’ve made huge progress versus Concorde.”
Back in the 1960s, Concorde was developed in wind tunnels, which meant building costly physical models, running tests, then repeating.
“You just can’t test very many designs, when every iteration costs millions and takes months,” explains Scholl. But Boom has perfected its aircraft’s efficient, aerodynamic design using computational fluid dynamics, which “is basically a digital wind tunnel. We can run the equivalent of hundreds of wind tunnel tests overnight in simulation for a fraction of the cost of a real wind tunnel test.”
XB-1 is made almost entirely from carbon fiber composites, selected for being both strong and lightweight.
Overture is designed to be powered by conventional jet engines and to run on up to 100% sustainable aviation fuel (SAF).
We’ve covered the so-far slow adoption of SAF before here on CNN Travel, and Scholl told CNN last year that he was well aware of its current problems.
“There’s not enough of it, and it costs too much, but it is scaling,” he said, but he reckoned that one day it’ll be used for all long-haul air travel. It’s the “future of aviation,” he declared.
Construction was completed last year on Boom’s Overture Superfactory in Greensboro, North Carolina. It’s been designed to scale to produce 66 Overture aircraft per year.
