Trump tariffs on Canada ‘paused’ for 30 days after border commitments – National
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says U.S. tariffs on Canada will be paused “for at least 30 days” after agreeing on border security measures with U.S. President Donald Trump on Monday afternoon.
The call, the second held between the two leaders Monday, came just hours before 25 per cent tariffs on Canadian goods were set to take effect Tuesday, along with 10 per cent tariffs on energy exports to the U.S.
“I just had a good call with President Trump,” Trudeau wrote on X.
He said Canada is implementing the $1.3-billion border security plan first unveiled in December, which includes “reinforcing the border with new choppers, technology and personnel, enhanced coordination with our American partners, and increased resources to stop the flow of fentanyl.”
Trudeau said nearly 10,000 frontline personnel “are and will be working on protecting the border.”
Canada will also appoint a “fentanyl czar,” list drug cartels as terrorist organizations, “ensure 24/7 eyes on the border,” and launch a new Canada-U.S. joint strike force to combat fentanyl, organized crime and money laundering, the prime minister added.
“I have also signed a new intelligence directive on organized crime and fentanyl and we will be backing it with $200 million,” he wrote.
“Proposed tariffs will be paused for at least 30 days while we work together.”
The deal Trudeau announced was similar to the one announced by Trump and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum earlier Monday that delayed the implementation of tariffs on Mexico for one month as well.
But it also includes several border security measures the federal government has already committed to, and that Canadian officials have spent weeks detailing to Trump administration officials and U.S. lawmakers in Washington.
“I am very pleased with this initial outcome, and the Tariffs announced on Saturday will be paused for a 30 day period to see whether or not a final Economic deal with Canada can be structured,” Trump wrote in a social media post.
The news came after a day when all eyes were on the two leaders as Canada braced for news on the impending tariffs.
Asked in the Oval Office after the deal with Mexico was announced if there was anything Canada can do to get its own reprieve, Trump said “I don’t know,” but then turned to his frequently mentioned push to acquire Canada.

“I’d like to see Canada become our 51st state,” he told reporters.
“We give them protection, military protection. We don’t need them to build our cars. … We don’t need them for lumber, we don’t need them for anything. We don’t need them for energy.”
Trump has linked his coming trade war with Canada to fentanyl crossing the border into the U.S., a position backed up by members of his administration and several Republican lawmakers in Congress.
“This is a drug war, not a trade war,” Trump’s trade advisor Peter Navarro told reporters outside the White House after the deal with Mexico was announced, which Navarro said Canada should match.
Yet on Monday, Trump raised a new grievance about Canada not allowing U.S. banks into the country.
Several smaller U.S. banks operate branches in Canada, but regulations ensure the largest banks, commonly referred to as the “Big Five,” are Canadian-owned to ensure financial independence and regulatory stability.
Trump said he raised the banking issue with Trudeau in their morning call and suggested that was something he wanted to see addressed in any trade deal, and tied it to what he said is the larger issue of countries not treating the U.S. fairly.
“All we want is a fair deal,” he said, adding he wants “reciprocal” tariffs on trading partners that charge their own duties on American imports.
“Many of the countries that you feel so horrible about, the way they’re being treated by Trump — you’re saying, ‘Oh, President Trump is so terrible to them’ — well they charge us tariffs.
“A lot of these countries, they’re so-called allies, but they don’t treat us well,” he continued.
Ottawa was set to impose 25 per cent tariffs on $30 billion in goods originating in the U.S., hitting hundreds of items, from meat and milk to carpets and curtains.
Canada’s initial tariff response was set to take effect Tuesday, when the American tariffs are being applied, with additional rounds of responses to follow.
Provinces and territories were also set to retaliate, including by cancelling U.S. business contracts and pulling American products from liquor store shelves.
Premiers began announcing those measures were being put on hold after Trudeau’s announcement, but warned they would return if Trump decides to proceed with tariffs.
“Make no mistake, Canada and Ontario continue to stare down the threat of tariffs,” Ontario Premier Doug Ford, who is currently running for re-election, said in a statement.
“So long as our trading relationship with our largest trading partner is up in the air, we will continue to see many potential projects frozen and projects that were already underway put at risk.”
Earlier Monday, Ford said he would cancel a $100-million contract with internet satellite firm Starlink, which is owned by Trump ally Elon Musk.
Trump has waved away concerns about tariffs raising prices for American consumers or affecting the stock market, as well as the potential impacts of the Canadian response.
He said the issue of tariffs would go away entirely if Canada becomes a U.S. state.
“I’d love to see that, but some people say that would be a longshot,” he admitted Monday.
“If people wanted to play the game right, it would be 100 per cent certain that they become a state, but a lot of people don’t like to play the game because they don’t have a threshold for pain. And there would be some pain, but not a lot, and it would mostly be theirs.”
Economists have said Canada could enter a recession in a wide scale trade war, leading to lost jobs and business investment, while the U.S. will see a rise in inflation — something Trump promised to bring down during his presidential campaign.
Recently, there has been a significant development in the ongoing trade dispute between the United States and Canada. President Trump has announced that he will be “pausing” his proposed tariffs on Canadian goods for a period of 30 days, following commitments made by Canada to increase border security measures. This decision comes as a relief to many businesses and consumers on both sides of the border, who have been concerned about the potential impact of these tariffs on the economy. The tariffs, which were set to go into effect in the coming weeks, would have imposed additional costs on a wide range of Canadian goods, from aluminum and steel to lumber and dairy products.
However, with this temporary pause in place, there is hope that the two countries will be able to come to a mutually beneficial agreement that addresses the underlying issues without resorting to punitive measures. Both sides have expressed a willingness to continue negotiations in good faith, and this development is seen as a positive step towards resolving the trade dispute.
It remains to be seen what will happen after the 30-day period is up, but for now, businesses and consumers can breathe a sigh of relief knowing that the immediate threat of tariffs has been averted. Stay tuned for further updates on this developing story.

Mexico agrees to deploy 10,000 troops to US border in exchange for tariff pause
Mexico has agreed to deploy 10,000 troops to the U.S.-Mexico border in exchange for a one-month delay on President Donald Trump’s threatened tariffs, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said Monday.
Sheinbaum made the announcement on social media Monday morning, roughly 12 hours before the tariffs were set to take effect. Trump and Sheinbaum spoke on Monday and agreed that Mexico will do more to combat drug trafficking into the U.S., and that the U.S. will step up efforts to block the flow of firearms into Mexico.
Sheinbaum also said officials with the U.S. and Mexico were beginning talks on wider trade and security issues.
Trump confirmed the deal in his own post on Truth Social, describing the call with Sheinbaum as a “very friendly conversation.”

“I just spoke with President Claudia Sheinbaum of Mexico. It was a very friendly conversation wherein she agreed to immediately supply 10,000 Mexican Soldiers on the Border separating Mexico and the United States. These soldiers will be specifically designated to stop the flow of fentanyl, and illegal migrants into our Country,” Trump wrote.

“We further agreed to immediately pause the anticipated tariffs for a one month period during which we will have negotiations headed by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Secretary of Treasury Scott Bessent, and Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick, and high-level Representatives of Mexico. I look forward to participating in those negotiations, with President Sheinbaum, as we attempt to achieve a ‘deal’ between our two Countries,” he added.

The deal comes just days after Trump announced 25% tariffs on both Mexico and Canada, as well as 10% tariffs on China. Trump says he spoke with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Monday, but the pair did not reach an agreement. He says they will speak again later Monday.
The tariffs are set to take effect at midnight on Tuesday.

During Sunday’s exchange with reporters, Trump also discussed the prospect of cutting off aid to South Africa after its president signed a controversial land seizure measure.
In a recent development, Mexico has agreed to deploy 10,000 troops to the US border in exchange for a pause on tariffs threatened by President Donald Trump. This agreement comes after weeks of tense negotiations between the two countries over the issue of immigration. The decision to deploy troops to the border is aimed at curbing the flow of migrants crossing into the United States illegally. This move is seen as a significant step towards addressing the issue of illegal immigration, which has been a major point of contention between the two countries.
President Trump had threatened to impose escalating tariffs on Mexican goods if the country did not take action to curb the flow of migrants. However, with this new agreement, the tariffs have been put on hold, providing some relief to both countries.
The deployment of troops to the border is expected to begin immediately and will continue until the issue of illegal immigration is brought under control. This move is seen as a positive step towards addressing a complex and contentious issue that has strained relations between the US and Mexico.
Overall, this agreement represents a significant development in the ongoing efforts to address the issue of illegal immigration and demonstrates the importance of diplomacy and cooperation between nations.

President Donald Trump on Monday said that he will pause for one month his new 25% tariff on goods entering the United States from Mexico after Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum agreed to immediately send 10,000 soldiers to her country’s northern border to prevent drug trafficking.
The announcement of the pause came two days after Trump slapped 25% tariffs on goods from Mexico and Canada, as well as a 10% tariff on goods imported from China.
Trump said in a social media post that he and Sheinbaum spoke Monday morning.
“We further agreed to immediately pause the anticipated tariffs for a one month period during which we will have negotiations headed by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Secretary of Treasury Scott Bessent, and Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick, and high-level Representatives of Mexico,” Trump wrote in the post.
“I look forward to participating in those negotiations, with President Sheinbaum, as we attempt to achieve a ‘deal’ between our two Countries,” Trump wrote.
Scott Bessent and Marco Rubio arrive ahead of the 60th inaugural ceremony where Donald Trump will be sworn in as the 47th president on January 20, 2025, in the US Capitol Rotunda in Washington, DC.

Sheinbaum had first disclosed the pause in a post on the X social media site.
“We had a good conversation with President Trump with great respect for our relationship and sovereignty; we reached a series of agreements,” Sheinbaum wrote in the tweet, according to a translation from Spanish.
She also wrote, “The United States is committed to working to prevent the trafficking of high-powered weapons to Mexico.”
This is breaking news. Please refresh for updates.
In a recent turn of events, President Trump has decided to pause his plan to impose tariffs on Mexico after reaching an agreement on border security. The tariffs, which were set to go into effect on Monday, have been postponed for at least 90 days as both countries work towards finding a solution to the immigration crisis. This decision comes after Mexico agreed to deploy thousands of National Guard troops to their southern border in an effort to curb the flow of migrants heading towards the United States. The two countries will also continue discussions on other measures to address the issue, including potential changes to asylum laws and increased cooperation on regional economic development.
While some critics have questioned the effectiveness of using tariffs as a leverage tool in international negotiations, others see this as a positive development in the ongoing efforts to secure the border and address the immigration challenges facing both countries.
As the situation continues to evolve, it remains to be seen how this temporary truce will impact the broader relationship between the United States and Mexico. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.

As the Royal Canadian Mounted Police ramp up border patrols in a bid to strengthen security and respond to America’s growing pressure to stop illegal border crossings and drug trafficking, a Black Hawk helicopter is now patrolling the border in Alberta.
The RCMP said the flights along the U.S.-Canada border began Tuesday. Similar such flights have already begun in Manitoba.
“The range and speed of the Black Hawk allows it to be deployed very quickly to any location along the Alberta border; providing the RCMP with an enhanced rapid-response capability within the province,” said Asst. Commissioner Lisa Moreland with the RCMP Northwest Region.
“The Black Hawk is without a doubt an additional and very important air asset that has been brought in to help keep our border with the United States secure.”

The helicopter will patrol the Prairie border to search for, and target, all illegal activity along the border region.
RCMP said this includes searching for people who illegally cross over into Canada between border crossings and for the human smugglers who facilitate those journeys.

RCMP said the Black Hawk will also be used to detect and stop smuggling and trafficking of contraband such as illegal drugs into, and out of, Canada.
The helicopters will have police officers on-board who can respond to any spot near the border where illegal activity may be taking place.
The helicopters can also be used to help direct Integrated Border Enforcement Team officers, who patrol the Alberta border in vehicles on the ground, to any suspicious activity.

In an interview with Global News earlier this month, the chief superintendent and director general of serious and organized crime and border integrity for the RCMP said the force has been assessing the force’s border capabilities since 2023, which was what allowed them to move quickly on leasing the Black Hawks.
Mathieu Bertrand said the RCMP already had an existing number of nine helicopters, six of which were for patrolling the border, but the Black Hawks will increase their speed.
Police added the Black Hawks allow those on board to fast-rope down without the helicopter needing to land, giving them the ability to extract and hoist to remove people as well.
The range of the Black Hawks depends on fuel, with the standard amount allowing them to travel about 590 km, though the range can be extended to more than 2,000 km if auxiliary tanks are added.
The helicopters are part of Canada’s plan to beef up patrols of the U.S.-Canada border.
The government is deploying a range of other security measures as well, such as using drones and surveillance towers, and acquiring new technology such as x rays, mobile x rays, and handheld chemical analyzers.
Global News has previously reported that a senior government source had said Trudeau was ready to beef up border security by buying new helicopters for patrol. A national security source had said at the time that the RCMP has sought helicopter capabilities for the border for years.
In December 2024, the federal government said it is proposing a joint strike force and an “around the clock” aerial surveillance unit for ports of entry as part of its plan to tackle issues at the U.S.-Canada border amid growing pressure from Trump.
The planned North American joint strike force was one of several announcements that came from the government’s fall economic statement, which saw $1.3 billion announced for added border security measures.
With Parliament prorogued until March 24, that new spending can’t be passed but measures that can be accomplished without legislation can still go ahead.
Alberta RCMP said people who live near the U.S. border may hear and see the helicopter on a regular basis. RCMP said this will be normal police operations and there’s no cause for any public safety concern.

Canadian Black Hawk helicopters patrolling Minnesota border along with conservation officers
The Royal Canadian Mounted Police have launched new Black Hawk helicopters, along with Manitoba Conservation Officers are now patrolling the border with the United States, including with northern Minnesota.
“Everybody in Manitoba right now is paying attention to building up the relationship with the United States of America,” said Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew. “Having a strong and secure border is important to us.”
Manitoba officials announced on Monday that conservation officers will now be used to look for drug and human trafficking.
A little more than a week ago, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police launched Black Hawk helicopters to work the border — including the Minnesota border with Manitoba. “I’m sure you’ll probably hear it, might see it — it will be flying on the Canadian side,” said RCMP Assistant Commissioner Lisa Moreland. The new helicopters allow the RCMP to deploy teams of officers quickly if they detect people crossing the border in regions where conditions and the elements can be harsh.

© His Majesty the King in Right of Canada, 2025“If you’re not prepared, that area is unforgiving,” Moreland said. “Having the Black Hawk to be able to respond quickly I can tell you it will help tremendously,” Moreland said. Last week, President Donald Trump mentioned possibly imposing 25% tariffs soon on Mexico and Canada — as the United States tries to stop illegal immigration and the flow of fentanyl.
U.S. Customs agents seized 43 pounds of fentanyl at the Canadian border last fiscal year, compared with more than 21,000 pounds (21,100) at the Mexico border.
U.S. Border Patrol FY2024 data shows more than 1.5 million people encountered or apprehended on the southern border with Mexico, compared to more than 23,000 people apprehended on the Canadian border.
“I think it’s unfortunate that the President of the United States has to tell us that we need to secure our border better,” said Dave Carlson, a top government official in the municipality of Emerson-Franklin in Manitoba. “I think a lot of people have felt that it’s not secure enough.”
“The additional eyes and ears on the border is really a good thing because we have seen those tragedies when people cross in inclement weather and get themselves into a bad situation,” Carlson said.
The Associated Press contributed to this report.
In a recent development, Canadian Black Hawk helicopters have been spotted patrolling the Minnesota border alongside conservation officers. This increased presence is aimed at curbing illegal activities such as poaching and unauthorized border crossings. The collaboration between Canadian military helicopters and conservation officers signals a united effort to protect the natural resources and wildlife in the region. This joint operation is crucial in safeguarding the delicate ecosystem and maintaining the integrity of the border.
Residents and visitors in the area are urged to cooperate with authorities and report any suspicious activities to ensure the safety and preservation of the environment. The heightened surveillance is a proactive measure to deter illegal activities and uphold the laws and regulations in place.
As we continue to see the importance of conservation efforts and border security, it is reassuring to witness the cooperation between different agencies working together towards a common goal. Let’s all do our part in protecting our natural resources and promoting sustainable practices for future generations to enjoy.

Russia’s military said Monday that its forces regained control of Nikolayevo-Darino, a small village captured by Ukrainian troops during their cross-border offensive into the southwestern Kursk region last year.
Moscow was caught off guard when Kyiv launched its incursion in early August but has steadily clawed back territory, halting Ukraine’s advance and rushing reinforcements to the area — including thousands of troops from its ally North Korea.
“During offensive operations, units of the ‘North’ group of troops liberated the settlement of Nikolayevo-Darino,” Russia’s Defense Ministry said.
Nikolayevo-Darino is a tiny village with a population of less than 150 people. It sits directly on the border.
Thousands of people have been evacuated from the Kursk region since Ukraine launched its incursion, while many others are trapped in Kyiv-held territory. Ukraine says it is providing safe passage to Russians in territory it controls.
A Ukrainian army source told AFP in November that Kyiv still controlled 800 square kilometers (300 square miles) of the Russian border region, down from previous claims it controlled almost 1,400 square kilometers.
A Message from The Moscow Times:
Dear readers,
We are facing unprecedented challenges. Russia’s Prosecutor General’s Office has designated The Moscow Times as an “undesirable” organization, criminalizing our work and putting our staff at risk of prosecution. This follows our earlier unjust labeling as a “foreign agent.”

The Russian Army has successfully retaken control of a border village in the Kursk Region, following a fierce battle with rebel forces. The village, which had been under rebel control for several months, is strategically located near the border with Ukraine. The operation to retake the village was carried out swiftly and efficiently by Russian forces, with air support from helicopters and fighter jets. The rebels, who had been using the village as a base to launch attacks on Russian military positions, were quickly overwhelmed and forced to retreat.
The successful recapture of the village is a major victory for the Russian Army, and a significant blow to the rebel forces operating in the region. The operation demonstrates the strength and determination of the Russian military in safeguarding the country’s borders and maintaining stability in the region.
The residents of the village are now being provided with humanitarian aid and support to help them rebuild their lives following the conflict. The Russian Army is committed to restoring peace and security in the region, and will continue to take decisive action against any threats to the country’s sovereignty.

Lily Phillips Stopped at US Border After Having Sex With 101 Men in a Day
Lily Phillips has revealed that she was stopped by border security when entering Las Vegas after she gained notoriety for having sex with 101 men in a day.
Phillips is a 23-year-old OnlyFans creator from the U.K. who began her career in the adult entertainment industry at 18. She went viral on TikTok in October after she revealed she was setting her goal of sleeping with 100 men in 14 hours.
Phillips rented a two-bedroom Airbnb in London to complete the mission, where she ended up sleeping with 101 men. Now, she plans to sleep with 1,000 men during a day, which she had originally planned to film in America.
During an episode of the RAW TALK podcast, Phillips recounted the “intense” experience of being stopped at the border and being questioned over the stunt.
Newsweek emailed a spokesperson for Phillips for comment on Thursday.

“I got stopped at the border, so that was, that was intense. We got stopped for, like, two hours … they were like, ‘we heard you’re here to f*** a thousand guys,’” Phillips claimed, before saying border patrol brought up her account on PornHub.
“I don’t think they quite recognize[d] me but my stage name is the exact same as my porn name so it’s, like, I guess you can just like search it up and s*** like that.”
“Wait, so it’s not your real name?” host Bradley Martyn asked, to which Phillips clarified: “No, no, that is my real name, sorry … I guess they might have, like, a database or something that they search up or something like that ’cause they were like, ‘What do you do for work?’”
Martyn questioned if border patrol knew what Phillips was on her way to do, to which she said: “I don’t know, well, that’s what they pulled me up for but I was like, it’s not illegal to have sex with a thousand guys.
Martyn added: “No, it’s just insane, it’s insane.”
A source close to Phillips told Newsweek that the OnlyFans star was concerned she’d be deported, after a friend told her that filming herself having sex with 1,000 men in America would be considered work, meaning she’d need a work visa.
Phillips also shared these concerns during an appearance on the Plug Talk podcast.
“I was meant to do it here [America], but I got quite a lot of advice saying, ‘you will be deported if you do it here,’” she told the hosts.
Phillips also went into further detail about her experience of being stopped by customs officers and grilled about her career.
“They were asking if I was a prostitute and stuff like that,” she said.
“I was very much, like, ‘yeah, I f*** all these guys but they don’t pay a penny, so it’s not prostitution. I just f*** a lot of guys!”
Phillips went viral after she starred in the YouTube documentary, I Slept With 100 Men in One Day, which offers a behind-the-scenes look at the challenge Phillips set herself, filmed by YouTuber Josh Pieters.
While Phillips shared her excitement for the stunt in a positive light, the documentary reveals how emotional she was after the event. Originally shot in October, clips shared online show Pieters documenting the aftermath of the session, with Phillips emerging from a bedroom in tears.
“When I decided to start making this documentary, I wasn’t too sure what to expect. I certainly didn’t expect to see Lily so upset at the end of it all,” Pieters said in the documentary.
Visibly sobbing, Phillips told Pieters: “Sometimes, you just disassociate, it’s not like normal sex at all.
“In my head, I can think of five, six guys, 10 guys that I remember. And that’s it. It’s just weird, isn’t it? If I didn’t have the videos, I wouldn’t have known that I’d done a hundred.”
The controversial documentary has stunned people online. Phillips is part of the shock-mining trend of taking part in outrageous stunts for attention and followers, alongside fellow adult content creator Bonnie Blue.
On the OnlyFans platform, some people make more money than some of the highest-paid sports stars.

Trump ‘border czar’ says he’s ‘realistic,’ mass deportation plan success depends on Congress
The Trump administration won’t be able to remove every undocumented migrant inside the United States, and the success of its promised mass deportation plan is “going to be based on what Congress gives us,” the administration’s new “border czar” Tom Homan told ABC News.
“I’m being realistic,” Homan said in an interview with ABC “This Week” co-anchor Martha Raddatz. “We can do what we can with the money we have. We’re going to try to be efficient, but with more money we have, the more we can accomplish.”
Immigration and Customs Enforcement doesn’t currently have enough funding from Congress to detain all of the undocumented immigrants that the Trump administration says it hopes to arrest, Homan said, so the scope of its enforcement operations is dependent on the scope of funding from Congress.

“The more money, the better I’m going to do,” he said.

Homan said success comes down to this: “Take as many public safety threats off the street as possible.”

That includes deporting “every illegal alien gang member in this country, including Tren de Agua,” the Venezuelan cartel, he added.
“When we see the crime rate from illegal aliens go down, that’s success,” he said. “Every public safety threat removed [from] this country is success. Every national security [threat] we find and remove from the country is a success.”

In the interview airing Sunday, Homan said the U.S. government for the first time ever used military aircraft to transport migrants back to their home country, and it will now be a daily occurrence.
According to U.S. officials, the U.S. military on Thursday flew more than 150 migrants to Guatemala on two separate flights.
In a recent statement, President Trump’s newly-appointed “border czar” has emphasized the importance of a realistic approach to immigration policy. The czar, who has been tasked with overseeing the administration’s efforts to address the crisis at the southern border, stressed that any mass deportation plan would require cooperation from Congress in order to be successful. The czar acknowledged the challenges that come with implementing such a plan, citing logistical and legal hurdles that must be overcome. He emphasized the need for a comprehensive approach that takes into account the complexities of the immigration system and the realities on the ground.
While the administration has made immigration enforcement a top priority, the czar made it clear that success in this area will ultimately depend on Congress taking action to address the underlying issues driving illegal immigration. He called for bipartisan cooperation to find solutions that are both effective and humane.
As the debate over immigration policy continues to heat up, the czar’s comments serve as a reminder of the need for a pragmatic and collaborative approach to this complex issue. Only by working together can we hope to achieve meaningful and lasting reform.
