Aus vs Ind – BGT 2024-25 – Jasprit Bumrah vs Sam Konstas continues to enliven Border-Gavaskar Trophy
Sam Konstas was at the centre of a fiery exchange with India’s stand-in captain Jasprit Bumrah amid a dramatic finish to the opening day of the final Test at the SCG, which has set up another compelling duel when play resumes on Saturday.Australia’s reply started with just 15 minutes of the day remaining, and first ball Konstas walked down the crease at Bumrah and whipped him through midwicket. Konstas then exchanged words with Bumrah before what became the penultimate ball of the day after Usman Khawaja had pulled away from the strike, seemingly to try and eat up time to ensure there wouldn’t be another over.
Konstas turned to Bumrah and appeared to say something, which prompted umpire Sharfuddoula to step in. The next delivery passed through outside off stump. Then, with the final ball of the day, Bumrah had Khawaja edging to second slip, and immediately turned and locked eyes with Konstas at the non-striker’s end and took a couple of steps towards him, before being joined by several team-mates, including Virat Kohli, in exuberant celebration.
“I feel they had a little chit-chat,” Rishabh Pant said of the exchange. “They wanted to waste some time. I feel that’s the reason he had a conversation with Jassi [Bumrah]. He [Konstas] said something, I didn’t hear it, but I feel that’s the only thing which he wanted to do to just waste some time so we don’t bowl one more over.”The India players were animated as they left the field, having a few minutes earlier been bowled out for 185, while Konstas walked off a few metres behind Khawaja, with Australia 9 for 1.
“It was an interesting one,” Beau Webster said of how Australia’s innings started. “I was sitting next to Heady [Travis Head] in the rooms watching on the TV and the first ball he [Konstas] ran down and clipped him over midwicket. There almost wasn’t surprise anymore, it was like there he is, he’s away.“Sammy’s a very confident young man, it’s what they do these days, those youngsters, they get after it and put themselves out there. He’s got all the skills and all the talent to back it up so hopefully he has a really good day tomorrow and puts a few runs on the board.”
Konstas’ selection in the latter part of the series has had a dramatic impact. He struck 60 off 65 balls in his debut innings at the MCG, where he scooped Bumrah on a regular basis, and in the process of his stay was shoulder-barged by Kohli between overs. Bumrah struck back against Konstas in the second innings by removing him for 8.
In the field, Konstas was heavily engaged with the packed MCG crowd and in the final innings, as Australia pushed for victory, was a vocal presence around the bat.
“He’s playing with a lot of flair,” Scott Boland told Fox Cricket. “He’s definitely under their skin. You can see that in the last few moments there.”
Speaking ahead of the SCG Test, Konstas’ mentor Shane Watson said he had been surprised by how outgoing the 19-year-old had been.“My experience of dealing and working with Sam has been a very quiet, reserved personality,” he said. “[He’s] a very deep thinker and certainly not an extrovert. But obviously what we saw in the Test match is that he absolutely is a showman.”
Bumrah’s late strike will raise India’s hopes that he has one more huge performance in him to cap an outstanding series with the visitors needing to win to retain the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
“Think there’s definitely a method to go about batting on this wicket, but Jasprit is a world-class bowler and no doubt he’s going to challenge our whole batting group,” Webster said. “He’s phenomenal with his lengths and lines, it is going to be tough on a wicket that will offer a fair bit for him.”
Pant acknowledged India would have liked a few more runs but was confident in India being able to stay competitive in the match.
“I think I wouldn’t say it’s a par score, I think anything over 220 to 250 would be a par score,” he said. “But still a very competitive score because the way ball is moving now I think there’s a lot of help for the bowler and hopefully we can capitalise on that.”

The highly anticipated Border-Gavaskar Trophy between Australia and India has once again lived up to its reputation as one of the most fiercely contested rivalries in cricket. The battle between two of the world’s best fast bowlers, Jasprit Bumrah and Sam Konstas, has been a highlight of the series so far. Both Bumrah and Konstas have been in scintillating form, consistently troubling the opposition batsmen with their pace, accuracy, and ability to extract movement off the pitch. Their duels have captured the imagination of fans and pundits alike, with each delivery from either bowler being scrutinized and analyzed for its potential impact on the game.
Bumrah, known for his unorthodox action and deadly yorkers, has been a thorn in the side of the Australian batsmen, picking up crucial wickets at key moments in the match. Konstas, on the other hand, has impressed with his raw pace and aggressive approach, constantly testing the Indian batters with his intimidating short-pitched deliveries.
As the series progresses, all eyes will be on Bumrah and Konstas as they continue to push each other to new heights and strive to outdo one another in what has become a personal battle within the larger context of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. The rivalry between these two fast bowlers has added an extra layer of excitement and drama to an already enthralling series, and fans can’t wait to see what twists and turns await in the remaining matches.

Australia win thriller to take series lead over Indiacpublished at 19:37 Greenwich Mean Time

Australia beat India by 184 runs in a thrilling conclusion to the fourth Test in Melbourne to take a 2-1 lead going into the final match of the series.
India were set a target of 340 in 92 overs and batted cautiously throughout the innings with little ambition to chase an unlikely victory.
But a sensational bowling performance in the evening session saw Australia take the final seven wickets for just 34 runs as India were bowled out for 155 in the final hour.
The tourists slipped to 33-3 but opener Yashasvi Jaiswal looked intent on securing a hard-fought draw for India before he was caught behind off Pat Cummins for 84 from 208 balls with 21 overs remaining.
Jaiswal had battled through a wicketless afternoon session alongside wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant, who made 30 from 104 balls – but they were the only men to pass double figures.
Pant eventually ran out of patience and slogged Travis Head to long-on for another wasteful dismissal and his departure after tea sparked the collapse.
Cummins and Scott Boland finished with three wickets each while spinner Nathan Lyon took two after his batting heroics, falling for 41 in the second over of the day as Australia were all out for 234.
He was bowled by Jasprit Bumrah, who finished with 5-57 in another scintillating performance.
The series concludes in Sydney from 2 January, where a win would secure Australia’s place in the World Test Championship final alongside South Africa.

India vs Australia 4th Test Day 5 LIVE Score: Pat Cummins and Scott Boland took three wickets each while Nathan Lyon took two as Australia wiped off seven wickets in the third session and won the epic fourth Test by 184 runs. Yashasvi Jaiswal’s long stay in the middle was ended by Australia captain Pat Cummins and that has exposed India’s tail. Washington Sundar is the last recognised batter out there. Jaiswal absorbed 208 balls for his 84 runs before going for a hook shot and perishing rather controversially. Rishabh Pant earlier showed in the second session that he can drop anchor when needed but then ended his great act of resistance in the most horrible way early in the third session. Pant went for a big shot out of nowhere against Travis Head and ended up being caught in the deep. That ended an 88-run partnership with Yashasvi Jaiswal which lasted 197 balls. Ravindra Jadeja then fell to Scott Boland and Nitish Kumar Reddy to Nathan Lyon in the over after that.…Read More
Pant Jaiswal ensured that India lost no wickets in the second session after three fell before Lunch. Jaiswal started the session aggressively and there was an over against Nathan Lyon in which he got away with trying to hit him out of the park and failing. But the young opener has largely been India’s anchor throughout the day after Australia set them a target of 340 to chase. Pant and Jaiswal’s resistance in the second session meant that Australia went back to the dressing room at Tea rather frustrated.
Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul earlier fell in the same over to Pat Cummins shortly after the drinks break in the first session of Day 5 of the 4th Test between India and Australia at the MCG. Rohit and Jaiswal dealt with some utterly unplayable deliveries from Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins and later Scott Boland but the Indian openers were a picture of concentration as they survived the early pace salvo. Rohit in particular looked far better than ever on this tour but fell for just nine runs off nine off 40 balls. India are chasing a target of 340, much higher than the record for the highest succesfull Test run chase at the MCG which was set all the way back in 1928.
It was Jasprit Bumrah once again for India. Mohammed Siraj bowled the first over of Day 5 and then Bumrah took just four balls to uproot Nathan Lyon’s middle stump and end his extraordinary last wicket stand with Scott Boland. Australia were all out for 234 in their second innings and India now have to chase a target of 340, well over the previous record for highest succesfull run chase at the MCG, to take back the series lead.
If India’s fans, team, and management were asked at the beginning of day four whether they would have accepted Australia being at 228-9 at close of play, everyone would likely have bitten your hand off after the hole the team had found itself in earlier in the Boxing Day Test match. But following the ups-and-downs at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, a day which saw Australia be 80-2, then 91-6, then 148-6, and then 173-9, there is a certain air of deflation regarding how the day ended for India. For many, this will be seen as an opportunity lost, a chance to complete a remarkable come-from-behind win gone begging, a golden opportunity to take a 2-1 series lead against all the odds.
Nitish Kumar Reddy’s fine century came to an end early in the day as he attempted to hit out, and Australia were back in to bat with the goal of putting up runs through the day and letting the decision for a declaration be in their own hands. It all seemed to be going okay with Marnus Labuschagne and Steven Smith at the crease, but a Mohammed Siraj and Jasprit Bumrah inspired flurry of wickets saw the middle order blown open, four wickets falling for just 11 runs.
Bumrah dismissed Travis Head, Mitchell Marsh, and Alex Carey in quick succession, also passing the 200 Test wickets mark on the way and keeping his average under 20. Another feather in the cap of a remarkable career so far for India’s gun bowler. India were truly in the ascendancy at that point, with this rapid wave of wickets making it seem as if Australia might fold very quickly, with the lead only just at 200, setting the stage for a relatively comfortable Indian chase.
The Australian resistance began with a solid 57-run partnership with Marnus Labuschagne and Pat Cummins, who steadied the ship after the chaos of the previous few overs. While Labuschagne slightly rode his luck, he was still his solid and compact self, while Cummins continued to show why he is Australia’s man for every crisis, whether with bat or with ball. The partnership ensured Australia put more runs on the board and also softened the ball as it got older.
Cummins also played the role of the aggressor, looking for boundaries whenever possible. While the pitch was slightly trickier than earlier in the match, there were by no means any demons that would concern the batters too much. Labuschagne was dismissed soon after, but Cummins added on some more crucial runs. Nevertheless, Australia found themselves at 173-9, a solid lead of 278 runs, which would still have allowed India to be confident in the chase on day five.
Suddenly, however, Nathan Lyon and Scott Boland gave a terrific account of themselves as numbers 10 and 11, looking surprisingly comfortable against the bowling as they not only survived, but also started ticking over the runs. A couple of boundaries and plenty of strike rotation allowed the score to keep ballooning, and before India knew what had struck them, Lyon suddenly turned on the motor towards the end of day’s play to heap on 28 runs off the last 5 overs. Lyon ended play on 41*, off just 54 deliveries, scoring at a strike rate of nearly 80 as Australia crossed 200 and the lead suddenly became 333.
India will be desperate to get rid of Lyon or Boland, with Australia undoubtedly also considering an early if not overnight declaration with 333 just on the cusp of too many runs for a team to score in one day’s play. India will be very annoyed by the bonus runs they allowed Australia’s last pair to add, with the duo adding on a half-century stand when nobody expected them to.
A lot of pressure will be on Yashasvi Jaiswal, who dropped a fairly standard catch off Labuschagne and allowed potentially 30-40 extra runs on the total. India will likely look to be optimistic and positive while entering the field, with eyes on pulling off something similar to the Gabba victory from the last tour with an against-the-odds chase in the fourth innings. India will know they have players capable of scoring, but will also be careful with not losing wickets, on a pitch where 10 wickets fell on day four and will only get trickier as play progresses.
Expect India to be circumspect in the first 30-40 overs through to the middle of the afternoon session, where the state of the game will determine whether the likes of Nitish Kumar Reddy and Rishabh Pant will go all-out in order to try and seal a win or whether they will look to preserve their wickets and see out a draw.
This Test will reach its final days with all three results possible, the way everyone would have wanted such a high-profile match to go. An early start, but an unmissable one, coming up at the MCG.

Cummins bowled a short ball that appeared to catch Jaiswal’s glove on the way through to wicketkeeper Alex Carey.
Umpire Joel Wilson, responsible for the infamous not out LBW decision of Ben Stokes off Lyon in the Headingley Test of the 2019 Ashes, was not convinced.
Australia reviewed and replays showed a deviation of the ball off the bat, even though there was no spike on Snicko.
Wilson’s finger eventually went up, despite a protest from Jaiswal which could land him in hot water with the match referee, to leave India in peril at 7-140 with 21 overs remaining in the day.
When the 15th and final session of this engrossing Test began, India required 228 runs to win from 228 balls with seven wickets in hand.
Going at six an over has become the norm in white ball cricket but doing it on a wearing day five pitch is an entirely different and difficult challenge.

It was unclear whether India would try and have a dash in pursuit of a target of 340 or block and bunt their way to a draw.
After 16 overs, India had cautiously made their way to 1-25 before Cummins breathed life into the match and a heaving MCG by removing Rohit Sharma (9) and KL Rahul (0) from the first and last balls of a sensational wicket-maiden.
When Virat Kohli (5) took the bait – not for the first time this series – and edged a Starc delivery outside his off stump to Usman Khawaja at first slip, India were in major strife at 3-33.
Sydney cricket fans have had their fair share of dead rubbers and fixtures devoid of real meaning over the past two decades but have good reason to be excited at what is in store on Friday.
The last time two teams went to Sydney with a trophy still up for grabs in the last fixture of a multi-match series was in 2004 against India, during Steve Waugh’s final Test series. Even then, India made over 700 in the first innings of what was a dull and drawn match.
Cricket Australia is expecting sellouts for the first three days of the SCG Test.
In a thrilling match at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, Australia emerged victorious over India to take a crucial 2-1 lead in the Border-Gavaskar series. The Australian team put up a strong performance with both bat and ball, outplaying the Indian team in all departments. The match saw some standout performances from the Australian players, with Steve Smith scoring a brilliant century and Pat Cummins taking crucial wickets to dismantle the Indian batting lineup. The Australian bowlers put up a disciplined effort to restrict the Indian team to a below-par total, while the batsmen chased down the target with ease.
The victory at the MCG has put Australia in a strong position in the series, with just one more match to go. The Indian team will now have to regroup and come back stronger in the next match to level the series. It promises to be an exciting finale to the series as both teams fight it out for the prestigious Border-Gavaskar trophy.

Border-Gavaskar Trophy: Watch: How Sam Konstas reacted after Virat Kohli’s wicket at the MCG | Cricket News
NEW DELHI: Australia opener Sam Konstas may have declared that Virat Kohli is his favourite player in the world and given the Indian batting superstar the clean chit over his shoulder-bump, but things are different when it comes to on field action.
The first day of the Boxing Day Test between India and Australia at the Melbourne Cricket Ground was just not about Konstas’ dazzling debut, but also his on-field confrontation with Kohli.Virat was fined 20 percent of his match fees and given a demerit point by the ICC for a Level One breach of the ICC code of conduct as a result of that incident.
However, the 19-year-old home debutant downplayed the incident, claiming the Indian superstar had bumped into him by accident.
In the Indian first innings, Virat batted patiently in his 86-ball stay at the crease accumulating 36 runs and looked totally focused to not to fall to the trap outside the off-stump.
There were many instances when Virat left deliveries bowled by Mitchell Starc outside the off-stump and giving the Aussie pacer a smile.
But Virat ran out of patience after his mix-up with Yashasvi Jaiswal that resulted in the Indian opener’s run out for 82.
The Aussies finally had the last laugh as Kohli edged a Scot Bland delivery for wicket-keeper Alex Carey to take a simple catch again losing the game of patience.
And now a video is viral on the internet that shows how Konstas celebrated after the dismissal of the former Indian captain.
In the video, Konstas is showing asking the MCG crowd to cheer on the dismissal, much like Virat does when he asks the crowd to cheer the Indian bowlers. The Kohli-Konstas on-field rivalry is emblematic of cricket’s beauty-where established stars and young challengers push each other to new heights. This contest isn’t just about skill; it’s a mental battle that keeps fans on the edge of their seats.
The Border-Gavaskar Trophy clash between India and Australia at the Melbourne Cricket Ground took an interesting turn when Virat Kohli was dismissed by Sam Konstas. The Australian fast bowler’s reaction to getting the prized wicket was caught on camera and it has been making rounds on social media. In the video, Sam Konstas can be seen celebrating Kohli’s wicket with great enthusiasm, pumping his fist and letting out a loud roar. The intensity and emotion in Konstas’ reaction truly highlight the significance of getting a player like Kohli out, especially in a high-stakes series like the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
Fans of both teams have been sharing the video and discussing Konstas’ passionate celebration. Some have praised his competitive spirit and determination, while others have criticized him for being too aggressive. Regardless of where you stand, there’s no denying that Kohli’s wicket was a crucial moment in the match and Konstas’ reaction captured the intensity of the moment perfectly.
As the Border-Gavaskar Trophy series continues to unfold, it will be interesting to see how the rivalry between India and Australia shapes up and whether we will witness more such moments of high drama and emotion on the cricket field.
