Luke Kornet has hilarious reaction to Quentin Grimes dunking on him in Celtics-Mavs – NBC Sports Boston
The Dallas Mavericks fell to the Boston Celtics in a 2024 NBA Finals rematch Saturday at the American Airlines Center, but Mavs guard Quentin Grimes did produce one of the best dunks of the season.
And unfortunately for Celtics backup center Luke Kornet, it came at his expense.
Grimes posterized Kornet with a thunderous one-handed slam in the final 30 seconds of the third quarter. The dunk brought the crowd, and the Mavericks bench, to their feet.
It was actually the NBA’s highest-graded dunk of the season so far.
What does Kornet think of the dunk and its high score? He responded with typical Kornet humor during an exclusive interview with NBC Sports Boston’s Abby Chin.
“Obviously, dunk score is a very crucial element to our game,” Kornet said with a smile, as seen in the video player above.
“What do I think (of the dunk)? You know, they say humility is the virtue of knowing God is the author of all good things, and he made Quentin Grimes well. Because that boy — he’s got some quick twitch, as they say. Frankly, when someone has an opportunity to display their athleticism, it’s on me to try to combat that, and sometimes you end up on the defeated side of the endeavor and you have to willfully accept it.
So kudos to him. It was a great jump, great dunk.”
The Celtics were still up by 20 points after the dunk, but Kornet isn’t the type of person to respond by pointing to the scoreboard.
“Yeah, but the thing is, you don’t want to kind of go the whole ‘scoreboard’ route because then it undermines like, hey, no, that happened. You don’t want to try to back out of it,” Kornet explained. “You accept the things that happen.”
Kornet deserves credit for at least challenging the dunk. A lot of players in his situation would have made what is commonly referred to as a “business decision” and just let Grimes dunk without any resistance.
“The business decision is always to do the thing that you think helps the other team score less and your team score more,” Kornet said. “I was a little late on that one, which happens. And then he got to my body before I was able to kind of get to his, which was sort of the problem.
“I mean, you can break it down in a lot of ways. The dunk score obviously shows all this.”
Kornet played well against the Mavericks with two points, five assists and a team-high 10 rebounds during the Celtics’ 122-107 win in Dallas.
Next up for the Celtics is a matchup with the Rockets on Monday night at TD Garden. The C’s beat the Rockets in Houston on Jan. 3. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m. ET on NBC Sports Boston.

How Patriots can learn from Chiefs defense – NBC Sports Boston
The New England Patriots have obvious needs on offense, and we’ve talked about them a ton over the last several months. Left tackle and wide receiver are two huge areas of weakness for the AFC East franchise.
But a strong case could be made that, despite those needs on offense, the best path for the Patriots to take in the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft is upgrading the defense.
Defense wins championships, even in an era where offense is so prevalent and so many teams in the AFC have a top-tier quarterback.
The Kansas City Chiefs are one win away from their third consecutive Super Bowl title, and even though superstar quarterback Patrick Mahomes is one of the best players in league history, this team wouldn’t be on the doorstep of a title without an elite defense.
Patriots Talk Podcast: Why is hiring Josh McDaniels the best move for the Patriots offense? | Listen & Subscribe | Watch on YouTube
The Chiefs ranked 15th in points scored during the regular season at 22.6 per game. They ranked 15th in scoring last season, too. In addition to Mahomes’ late-game brilliance, one of the primary reasons for Kansas City’s success has been its defense.
The Chiefs ranked No. 2 in points allowed last season and finished No. 4 this past season. They allowed fewer than 20 points in five straight games from Week 13 through Week 17 to secure homefield advantage in the AFC playoffs.
How did the Chiefs build a great defense? It started with the draft. They had 11 players see snaps on defense in Sunday’s AFC Championship Game who were added between the 2020 and 2024 drafts, and that includes many of the unit’s most impactful players.
- 2024: Jaden Hicks, DB, Round 4
- 2023: Felix Anudike-Uzomah, DE, Round 1
- 2022: Trent McDuffie, CB, Round 1
- 2022: George Karlaftis III, DE, Round 1
- 2022: Bryan Cook, S, Round 2
- 2022: Leo Chenal, LB, Round 3
- 2022: Joshua Williams, CB, Round 4
- 2022: Jaylen Watson, CB, Round 7
- 2022: Nazeeh Johnson, S, Round 7
- 2021: Nick Bolton, LB, Round 2
- 2020: Michael Danna, DE, Round 5
Notice all the Day 2 and Day 3 picks? That’s where teams really solidify their depth, and the Chiefs have done a great job of finding starters and useful players on defense in those middle to later rounds of the draft.
The best example is the Chiefs’ 2022 draft. They had seven players from that draft class tally at least one tackle on defense versus the Bills on Sunday. In comparison, just three of the 10 players the Patriots drafted in 2022 are still on the team (Cole Strange, Marcus Jones and Kevin Harris), and one of them (Harris) is on the practice squad.
Luckily for the Patriots, the 2025 draft class has a lot of good front seven players and cornerbacks. The highest-rated defensive player on the board is Penn State edge rusher Abdul Carter. The Patriots should absolutely consider taking him with the No. 4 pick, assuming he’s available at that point. New England’s pass rush ranked dead last in sacks with 28 this past season, and Carter would upgrade that group in a major way.
Colorado star and reigning Heisman Trophy winner Travis Hunter would give the Patriots another excellent cornerback opposite Christian Gonzalez. Michigan defensive tackle Mason Graham is another intriguing option, too.
The Patriots absolutely need to surround young quarterback Drake Maye with more high-end talent at the skill positions, but they can’t forget about the defense. New England’s defense took a huge step back in 2024, and reversing that trend needs to be a top priority over the offseason.
Which players could the Patriots target in Round 1? Here’s a roundup of recent expert mock drafts.
“The Patriots must help Drake Maye on the offensive line. I see Campbell as a safe, steady player who is still improving.”
“While New England’s top priority this offseason should be to surround quarterback Drake Maye with as much talent as possible, it’s hard to pass on Carter here. In his first year playing on the ball, the junior finished as easily the most valuable edge defender in college football, according to PFF’s wins above average metric. He’s a freak athlete whom many consider the best player in the draft, regardless of position. Carter would form an enticing edge pairing with Keion White.”
“For those familiar with Mike Vrabel, he loves himself some grinders, tough guys, and dominance in the trenches. He’ll want a tone-setter like Mason Graham to join the Patriots, wrecking opposing offenses on every down. The Patriots had one competent defensive tackle last year and need much more havoc created up front. Mason Graham is one of the most disruptive defensive forces to enter any NFL Draft in the last several years so he’ll fit right in at New England under new head coach Mike Vrabel.”
Pat Lane, Pats Pulpit: Mason Graham, DL, Michigan (mock trade down to No. 6)
“The Patriots have needs all over their roster, but defensive line might not seem like the biggest at first glance. However, I would argue that the biggest need is adding blue chip players any way possible. Graham has the potential to be one of those right away.
“The Michigan product can get to the quarterback from the inside, but is also stout enough to be a solid run defender as well. As we have seen in these playoffs, running the ball and being able to stop the run are important, as is being able to attack the passer from different angles — two things Graham is capable of doing.”
“Travis Hunter to the Patriots would be tremendous for everyone involved. New England gets a ridiculous two-way player, and Hunter can be featured prominently right away.”
“The Patriots love versatile players, and their coach, Mike Vrabel, was a notable key two-way player for Bill Belichick with his strong play at linebacker and his occasional red-zone touchdowns as a tight end. Troy Brown also played corner and wide receiver for them. Hunter can be a top shutdown corner and also contribute some flashy big plays for Drake Maye when needed with a few key snaps.”
The New England Patriots have long been known for their dominant defense, but in recent years, they have struggled to replicate the success they had in the past. One team that the Patriots can learn from is the Kansas City Chiefs, who have shown how a strong defense can be the key to winning games. The Chiefs defense has been a force to be reckoned with this season, ranking in the top 10 in both points allowed and yards allowed per game. They have been able to shut down some of the most high-powered offenses in the league, and their success can be attributed to their aggressive style of play and their ability to create turnovers.
The Patriots, on the other hand, have struggled to generate turnovers and have been too passive at times on defense. They need to take a page out of the Chiefs’ playbook and be more aggressive in creating turnovers and putting pressure on opposing quarterbacks.
Additionally, the Patriots can learn from the Chiefs’ ability to adapt and make adjustments on the fly. The Chiefs have shown a willingness to change their game plan based on the strengths and weaknesses of their opponents, and this flexibility has been a key factor in their success.
Overall, the Patriots can learn a lot from the Chiefs defense and their approach to the game. By being more aggressive, generating turnovers, and being willing to adapt their game plan, the Patriots can improve their defense and get back to their winning ways.

The Houston Rockets are set to take on the Boston Celtics in an exciting NBA matchup. Both teams are looking to secure a win and improve their standing in the league. The odds for this game are close, making it a tough one to predict. The Rockets have been struggling this season, with a record of 11-22. However, they have shown flashes of potential and have the ability to compete with top teams. On the other hand, the Celtics have had a solid season so far, with a record of 19-17. They are a well-rounded team with strong players on both ends of the court.
In terms of predictions, it’s difficult to say who will come out on top in this game. The Celtics have the advantage in terms of overall talent and experience, but the Rockets have shown that they can be a tough team to beat on any given night.
In terms of picks, it may be wise to consider betting on the Celtics to win this game. They have been playing well recently and have the home-court advantage. However, the Rockets could also pull off an upset if they bring their A-game.
Overall, this game is sure to be an exciting one to watch. Both teams have something to prove and will be looking to secure a win. It will be interesting to see how it all plays out on the court.

Boston Common tees off Monday in debut
They’ll square off against a threesome from Jupiter Links featuring legend Tiger Woods.
Tiger Woods’s Jupiter Links team opposes Boston Common Golf Monday night at 6:30 on ESPN.Marta Lavandier/Associated Press “The players are sort of champing at the bit,” said Mark Lev, president and CEO of Boston Common Golf. “I’m not sure you would ever see Rory playing Tiger in a competitive outdoor environment moving forward — you’d need both guys to be in the same group in the final round, and hopefully that happens — but what’s great about TGL is you know who’s going to be playing who.”
There are a lot of unknowns, too.
One is, how will Lev and Boston Common Golf create buzz, never mind loyalty, for a team that features one New Englander in Bradley, an Irishman in McIlroy, an Aussie in Scott, and Japan’s Hideki Matsuyama, who will make his debut in the team’s third match, in mid-February.
Having David Ortiz on site rooting for Boston Common Golf on Monday night won’t hurt, but it will take more than Big Papi.
“I like to consider it a marketing opportunity as opposed to a marketing challenge,” said Lev, who also heads up Fenway Sports Management, the marketing and sponsorship arm of Fenway Sports Group, which owns the team as well as the Red Sox and Liverpool FC.
“Owning the teams that FSG owns who play their games or matches in their own town, obviously, when you’re looking to build fandom, there’s nothing more effective than that,” said Lev. “What we’ve tried to do so far is create that connection, we’ve had a docuseries created around the making of our team that aired on NESN and the Golf Channel. And certainly Keegan and his connection to this region is a huge asset for us. And we’re looking to build that connection, we’re going to be announcing at the match a commitment our team and players are making to donate 5,000 rounds of golf to an organization called Youth on Course that will provide tee times for kids in and around Greater Boston.”
These are still early days for Boston, Jupiter, and the other teams, representing Los Angeles, San Francisco, Atlanta, and New York.
“It will be a slow build,” said Lev. “But I think as our players play and show what they’re all about, they’ll endear themselves to fans in New England just like players on the sports teams in Boston do right now.”
Beyond trying to forge a bond with fans from each team’s region, the league as a whole has its hopes pinned on how the game attracts and keeps viewership.
The first match garnered an average of 919,000 viewers, and in Week 2, when Woods debuted, the number crept to 1.05 million.
Last week, the match between New York and Atlanta featured Justin Thomas, Rickie Fowler, Matt Fitzpatrick, and Patrick Cantlay, but no mega-stars. The result was an average viewership of 682,000.
That’s quite a dropoff, but one that Lev said the league is not making too much of given the small sample size of matches. He focused on the 868,000 average, which he said “exceeded expectations.”
For the 18-to-49-year-old demographic advertisers prize, Lev said TGL’s 43 percent of its viewership in that age group tops most of the major sports leagues and the median age of 51 is lower than the NFL, MLB, NHL, and Premier League.
With time slots being bumped around each week, Lev said viewership has been much higher than previous programming on ESPN.
“I think everybody’s really pleased with that. It’s a great foundation to build from,” he said.
It’s fair to say that the TGL considers the matchup between McIlroy and Woods, who are co-founders of the league, to be the biggest draw to date.
With players mic’d up, non-stop music played, and 1,500 fans in attendance encouraged to express themselves, TGL is deliberately charting a different look and feel from your standard golf tournament.
“There are no ‘Quiet, Please’ signs that are being held, quite the contrary,” said Lev, who noted fans in the arena can sit back and watch the play unfold in front of them, as opposed to picking a group at a traditional tournament to walk alongside for 18 holes. “When they’re hitting chip shots from around the green, they’re no more than 5 feet away from the fans in the stands.”
The players have been adjusting to more than the noise.
Besides hitting into a screen, players have noted the differences reading putts under television lighting than sunlight, plus other subtleties.
“Tiger was talking about how the artificial grass around the green complex, the chipping area, there’s a real difference between when they’re chipping down the grain versus into the grain,” said Lev.
TGL features six teams of four players competing other in a tech-infused arena the size of a football field.Rebecca Blackwell/Associated Press The result is a work in progress, as TGL strives to retain a competitive element with the entertainment factor.
“There’s a little bit of building the plane as we’re flying it here,” said Lev.
Monday night, “Boston’s team” scans its boarding pass and takes off.

The Boston area shook from a rare, but minor, earthquake Monday morning.
The U.S. Geological Survey rated the shaking as a magnitude 3.8, downgraded from the initial magnitude of 4.1. It was centered off the coast of New Hampshire and Maine in York Harbor, about 12 miles underground.
While not destructive, and fairly common in areas with more seismic activity like California, that’s relatively large for the area.
Shaking was felt across the region — as far away as New Haven, Connecticut, and Albany, New York, according to responses sent to U.S. Geological Survey.
Preliminary report is 4.1 mag. positioned off York Harbor, ME. WOW that was wild.

I was outside with the dog, and the trees were shuddering. Long, steady rumbling like there was blasting nearby. Went on for several seconds. No apparent damage.
