  • Preview: Boston College Men’s Basketball vs North Carolina

Boston College will take on a struggling UNC squad tomorrow afternoon. The Eagles travel to Chapel Hill having lost their last 5 games. The Tar Heels are looking to end a losing streak of their own having lost their last two against Wake Forest and Stanford.

Who: Boston College Eagles (9-10) vs. North Carolina (12-8)

Where: Smith Center, Chapel Hill, NC

    When: Saturday, January 25th, 2025

    Tip-off Time: 2:15 PM EST

How to Watch: This game will be available to watch on The CW.

North Carolina was the 9th ranked team in the country according to the preseason AP Poll and have underperformed so far. They currently sit at 12-8 on the year and 5-3 in ACC play. The Tar Heels had a tough Maui Invitational losing all 3 games to Dayton, Auburn, and Michigan State. They have been less than stellar the remainder of the year losing to Alabama, Kansas, Florida, and Louisville to name a few. The Tar Heels have yet to beat a ranked team this season, which is not something anyone expected 20 games into the year.

RJ Davis is the engine that makes the Hells go. Davis was the Jerry West Player of the year, given to the nation’s best shooting guard, the ACC Player of the Year, and a consensus First Team All-American last season. This year Davis is averaging 17.5 points per game which leads the Tar Heels and ranks 7th in the conference. Davis’ supporting cast consists of Sophomore Elliot Cadeau, Junior Seth Trimble, and Freshman Ian Jackson. Cadeau has had a rough start to his career. He was a highly touted recruit who struggled shooting all of last season. His shot has improved this year as he is averaging just over 10 points per game and is shooting about 30% from the 3 points range compared to 18% last season. Trimble has averaged 12 points this season and missed 3 games with an upper-body injury sustained around New Years. Trimble has made a big step forward from last year when he only average 5 points per game. Jackson has been the second leading scorer for the Tar Heels, but he also missed a few games earlier in the season. Jackson is averaging just shy of 15 points per game.

North Carolina has definitely underperformed so far this season, but they still have RJ Davis, who will be a tough match up for the Eagles. Boston College is currently second to last in the ACC standings and will need to play one of their best games of the year to compete with the Tar Heels in the Dean Dome. Coach Grant will need to find a way to slow down Davis and company and play better team defense. North Carolina is known for getting up and down the floor, so hopefully the Eagles can keep pace come tomorrow afternoon.

The Boston College Men’s Basketball team is gearing up for an exciting matchup against North Carolina this weekend. Both teams are coming off strong performances and are looking to secure a key victory in conference play.

Boston College has shown resilience and determination throughout the season, with standout performances from players like Jay Heath and Steffon Mitchell. With a strong defense and potent offense, the Eagles are ready to take on the Tar Heels and showcase their skills on the court.

On the other hand, North Carolina is a formidable opponent with a talented roster led by players like Armando Bacot and Caleb Love. The Tar Heels are known for their fast-paced style of play and aggressive defense, posing a tough challenge for Boston College.

This matchup promises to be a thrilling showdown between two competitive teams vying for a crucial win. Be sure to tune in and catch all the action as Boston College faces off against North Carolina in what is sure to be an intense and exciting game. • N. Carolina Tar Heels vs. Boston College Eagles: How to watch NCAA Basketball online, TV channel, live stream info, start time

    Halftime Report

After a tough loss on the road their last time out, N. Carolina looks much better today on their home court. They have jumped out to a quick 46-45 lead against Boston College.

If N. Carolina keeps playing like this, they’ll bump their record up to 13-8 in no time. On the other hand, Boston College will have to make due with a 9-11 record unless they turn things around (and fast).

    Who’s Playing

Boston College Eagles @ N. Carolina Tar Heels

Current Records: Boston College 9-10, N. Carolina 12-8

    How To Watch

    What to Know

Eagles fans better hope the squad plays one heck of a game on Saturday as the odds are decidedly against them. They and the N. Carolina Tar Heels will face off in an ACC battle at 2:15 p.m. ET at Dean E. Smith Center. The Eagles are no doubt hoping to put an end to a five-game streak of away losses dating back to last season.

Last Tuesday, things could have been worse for Boston College, but they could have been a whole lot better as they took a 74-56 loss to Virginia.

Fred Payne put forth a good effort for the losing side as he went 7 for 10 en route to 17 points plus three steals. His performance made up for a slower match against Duke on Saturday.

Perhaps unsurprisingly given the score, Boston College struggled to get the ball back on offense and finished the game with only four offensive rebounds. Sadly, that’s becoming something of a trend for them; they were averaging 12.5 offensive rebounds per game earlier this season, but in their last five games they’ve fallen to only 6.6 per game.

Meanwhile, the point spread may have favored N. Carolina last Tuesday, but the final result did not. They were just a bucket shy of victory and fell 67-66 to Wake Forest. That’s two games in a row now that the Tar Heels have lost by just one point.

Even though the team lost, they still had their share of impressive performances. One of the best came from Elliot Cadeau, who dropped a double-double on 14 points and 13 assists. The dominant performance gave him a new career-high in assists. The team also got some help courtesy of RJ Davis, who scored 21 points in addition to two steals.

Boston College now has a losing record at 9-10. As for N. Carolina, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 12-8.

Boston College came up short against N. Carolina in their previous matchup back in January of 2024, falling 76-66. Can Boston College avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We’ll find out soon enough.

    Odds

    N. Carolina is a big 19-point favorite against Boston College, according to the latest college basketball odds.

The oddsmakers had a good feel for the line for this one, as the game opened with the Tar Heels as a 18.5-point favorite.

  • Preview: The Martin Necas era begins in Boston

As the Colorado Avalanche embark on their first east coast road trip of the calendar year, they will encounter an unusual quirk in the schedule of back-to-back matinee games. First up is a meeting with the Boston Bruins before heading to New York.

The biggest storyline of the day (decade?) is the shocking trade of Mikko Rantanen and what that does to the Avalanche lineup both in this contest and beyond. Perhaps Martin Necas and Jack Drury will get to Boston in time to make their Avalanche debut.

    Colorado Avalanche

After two consecutive losses at home the Avalanche will be glad to see the road for a little while, especially considering the new players need to bond with their new teammates. Miles Wood is expected back sometime soon but perhaps not today.

    Projected Lineup

Jonathan Drouin – Nathan MacKinnon – Martin Necas ?
Ross Colton – Casey Mittelstadt – Arturri Lehkonen
Joel Kiviranta – Parker Kelly – Logan O’Connor
Jack Drury ? – Chris Wagner- Juuso Parssinen –

    Devon Toews – Cale Makar
    Samuel Girard – Josh Manson
    Keaton Middleton – Sam Malinski

    Boston Bruins

The Bruins have had an up-and-down season. Winners of four of their last six but also endured a six-game losing streak prior to that. As always they are headlined by superstar David Pastrnak who leads the team with 56 points.

    Projected Lineup

David Pastrnak – Pavel Zacha – Morgan Geekie

Charlie Coyle – Matthew Poitras – Brad Marchand

Vinni Lettieri – Elias Lindholm – Trent Frederic

Max Jones – Patrick Brown – John Beecher

    Andrew Peeke – Nikita Zadorov

    Brandon Carlo – Michael Callahan

    Mason Lohrei – Parker Wortherspoon

    Goaltenders

Considering this is a matinee game with no morning skate, starting goaltenders won’t be known until game time. With a game tomorrow expect to see MacKenzie Blackwood and Scott Wegewood each get starts but which one goes first is anyone’s guess. As for Boston, their starter Jeremy Swayman is likely to take the net if he is over his minor injury.

The Carolina Hurricanes are set to face off against the Boston Bruins in their first game of the season, and all eyes will be on Martin Necas as he makes his NHL debut. The young forward has been turning heads in training camp with his speed, skill, and hockey IQ, and many are excited to see what he can bring to the table.

Necas, a former first-round draft pick, has been developing in the AHL for the past couple of seasons, and now he finally has the opportunity to showcase his talents on the biggest stage. With his ability to create scoring chances and make plays in all three zones, he is expected to make an immediate impact for the Hurricanes.

The Bruins, on the other hand, will be looking to shut down Necas and the rest of the Hurricanes’ offense with their strong defensive core. With players like Zdeno Chara and Charlie McAvoy leading the way, the Bruins will be a tough test for the young Hurricanes team.

Overall, this game is shaping up to be an exciting matchup between two talented teams. Will Necas be able to make a statement in his NHL debut, or will the Bruins come out on top? Tune in to find out as the Martin Necas era begins in Boston.

  • Blue state governor backs Boston ICE operations, supports ‘apprehension of criminals’

The Democratic governor of Massachusetts signaled her support for arresting criminal illegal immigrants, saying she supports “the apprehension of criminals in our communities”

Gov. Maura Healey told reporters on Thursday that she supports arresting criminals, regardless of whether they are undocumented or not, according to local news outlet WCVB.

Fox News witnessed ICE Boston making eight arrests this week, including multiple MS-13 members, Interpol Red Notices, murder and rape suspects, and a volatile Haitian gang member with 18 convictions in recent years who shouted that he “ain’t going back to Haiti” and “F— Trump, Biden forever!”

The arrests come as the Trump administration moves rapidly to fulfill its promise to launch a historic mass deportation operation, which it has said will focus primarily – but not exclusively – on public safety threats.

‘NATIONAL EMERGENCY’: TRUMP DECLARES AMBITIOUS ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION CRACKDOWN IN INAUGURAL ADDRESS

Bill Melugin embedded with ICE Boston and witnessed agents making arrests. (X/ @BillMelugin_)

Addressing the arrests, Healey said she “wouldn’t describe them as raids,” but instead, “what it seems to be, and what we expected and what I support, which is the apprehension of criminals in our communities.”

“Whether you’re documented or undocumented, you commit crimes, you’re subject to investigation and prosecution and accountability, and it looks like that is what happened,” Healey said, according to Fox local outlet, Boston 25.

Healey, who previously vowed to resist Trump’s deportation efforts in November, noted that Massachusetts is not a sanctuary state, despite a 2017 ruling by the state Supreme Judicial Court that severely limits law enforcement cooperation with ICE.

Healey said in November that her state police will “absolutely not” be cooperating with Trump’s mass deportation efforts, warning that she will use “every tool in the toolbox” to “protect” residents in the blue state.

“I still remain opposed on efforts to target large swaths of an undocumented population who’ve done nothing wrong other than they’re here without lawful presence,” she said.

Healey has taken a slightly more centrist position on immigration enforcement in recent months.

After an illegal migrant was caught using the state’s migrant shelter system for illegal activity, Healey said she was “outraged,” She ordered a full inspection of the system and sent a letter to Massachusetts legislative leaders, urging them to amend the state’s “right to shelter” laws to exclude illegal immigrants.

At the time, she commented that Trump now has the opportunity to fix the border and said, “I hope he does.”

Massachusetts Attorney General Andrea Campbell, however, continues to staunchly oppose the Trump administration’s crackdown.

She has taken to social media several times this week to express her anger over Trump’s immigration decisions, saying in one X post that “State & local law enforcement cannot be commandeered for federal immigration enforcement. Despite what President Trump may think, he doesn’t have the authority to unilaterally rewrite our Constitution.”

“State AGs won’t hesitate to respond if his threats become illegal actions,” she said.

Meanwhile, Republican state Representatives Michael Soter and Kenneth Sweezey introduced a bill on Friday, titled “An Act to promote and protect safety in the Commonwealth,” which would empower local and state law enforcement to more fully cooperate with ICE.

“The immigration issue in Massachusetts has gotten completely out of control,” Sweezey said in a statement sent to Fox News Digital. “This piece of legislation is a very simple, common-sense first step in rectifying part of the issue.”

Bill Melugin, Stephen Sorace and Adam Shaw contributed to this report.

In a surprising turn of events, the Democratic governor of a blue state has announced his support for ICE operations in Boston, stating that he believes in the “apprehension of criminals” regardless of their immigration status.

Governor John Smith, a vocal advocate for immigrant rights in the past, made the announcement during a press conference earlier today. He emphasized that his decision was not a shift in his stance on immigration, but rather a commitment to keeping his state safe from dangerous individuals.

“I fully support the work of ICE in apprehending criminals who pose a threat to our communities,” Governor Smith stated. “While I believe in protecting the rights of all individuals, I also believe that those who commit crimes should be held accountable, regardless of their immigration status.”

This announcement has sparked controversy among his fellow Democrats, with many criticizing Governor Smith for aligning himself with the Trump administration’s immigration policies. However, others have praised his willingness to prioritize public safety over political ideology.

It remains to be seen how this decision will impact Governor Smith’s reputation within the Democratic party, but one thing is clear – he is standing firm in his belief that all criminals, regardless of their background, should be brought to justice.

Notre Dame: Hildalgo’s rough shooting start and a BC edge on free throws allowed left the Irish trailing after 10 minutes. Once those problems were sorted out, they pulled away.

BC: The Eagles haven’t beaten a ranked team since topping No. 10 North Carolina State in 2023. BC last beat a top-3 team in the 2006 NCAA Tournament, besting No. 2 Ohio State.

    Key moment

Midway through the third quarter, Todd was trapped along the sideline in front of the Eagles’ bench as the crowd counted down the shot clock. With no one to pass to and the count down to 2, she threw an awkward, sideways, two-handed hook shot at the basket — and it went in, for 3.

    Key stat

Hidalgo was 4 for 14 shooting in the first half and 5 for 9 in the second.

    Up next

Boston College is at Wake Forest on Sunday. Notre Dame visits Virginia Tech next Thursday.

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. — No. 3 Notre Dame (16-2, 7-0) will play the first of three consecutive road games starting Thursday, as the Irish head to Chestnut Hill to play Boston College (12-8, 3-4).

The Irish have won 11 consecutive games dating back to Dec. 5, and the offense is beginning to fire on all cylinders with both Maddy Westbeld and Hannah Hidalgo back in the starting lineup.

After missing two games against Clemson and Georgia Tech with an ankle sprain, Hidalgo returned to the court Sunday night against SMU and recorded 23 points and 10 rebounds, her third double-double of the season. Front court mate Olivia Miles also had a double-double, notching 17 points, 10 rebounds and 6 assists. It was the 25th double-double of her storied career. No other Notre Dame guard has had more than 17.

Notre Dame continues to dominate the national rankings as a team. The Irish rank in the top 10 in the country in scoring offense and rebounds, assists and blocks per game. Notre Dame also leads the nation with a 41.3 success rate from beyond the arc, led by Miles who is shooting 44.8 percent from deep, a more than 20 percent increase from her average over the first three years of her career.

The Eagles are winners of back-to-back ACC games, edging Miami by 4 points last Thursday and dominating Syracuse by 41 on Sunday. Four Boston College players scored in double figures in the win, including 22 points from veteran Dontavia Waggoner and 21 from Teya Sidberry. The Eagles knocked down 10 triples after 12 against Miami, marking the first time since 2019 that they had 10 or more 3-pointers in back-to-back games. That charge against Syracuse was led by T’yana Todd, who went 4-5 from deep.

On the season, Boston College sits in the middle of the ACC in both scoring offense (ninth) and scoring defense (11th). They do an excellent job passing the ball, averaging 16.5 assists per game (fourth). Kaylah Ivey ranks second in the conference with 6.1 assists per game, trailing only Miles (7.1). Ivey has an assist/turnover ratio of 3.9, which leads the ACC.

Thursday’s game will air on ACCNX and tips off at 7 p.m. Notre Dame is 30-9 all-time against Boston College and has won the last five meetings.
