  • Sunset to sunrise snow – Boston News, Weather, Sports


    While the snow will begin this afternoon, temperatures will stay above freezing and limit the accumulation for the first few hours. But as soon as the sun sets tonight, temperatures will drop and we’ll start to make snow fast. A winter storm warning is in effect for later today and tonight for several inches of snow on the way, especially areas north and west of Boston where totals look to eclipse half a foot.

    Most towns should see at least 6″ of snow with 6-8″ being most common across the area. Boston, I’d lean on 6″ and Worcester the 8″, possibly 9″ with some added elevation. It’s a light and fluffy snow so it’ll stack up pretty easily. Good news about that is while that may aid in higher totals, it’s also easier to move on Monday morning.

    While you’ll notice light snow and flurries breaking out late in the afternoon, temperatures will be above freezing which will limit the accumulation… at least initially. Once the sun goes down, temperatures will cool off and we’ll start to accumulate fast. So if you need to run errands or travel, it’s best to do it before sunset tonight or shortly after, say 5-6pm to be safe. While some light flurries may linger tomorrow morning, 95% of the snow will be over by 5am and certainly all of the accumulation.

    So you saw the snow map above, how do we get to those numbers? Like I said before, while snow will start falling this afternoon, we won’t accumulate much if anything. Everything happens after sunset and once it starts accumulating, it stacks up fast. Here’s how Boston and Worcester get to those storm totals by tomorrow morning. At times, it’ll snow 1-2″ per hour.

    Once the snow wraps up, it’s going to stick around for a while as a blast of cold air moves in for the week ahead. Below are your actual air temperatures with overnight lows falling to near zero and afternoon wind chills near zero for Tuesday and Wednesday. Brr!

  • Joe Mazzulla lauds Jaylen Brown’s ‘intensity’ in Celtics’ dominant win over Magic – NBC Sports Boston


    The real Jaylen Brown showed up for the TD Garden crowd in Friday night’s emphatic Boston Celtics victory over the Orlando Magic.

    It was a bounce-back performance for Brown, who looked out of sorts during the team’s stunning loss in Toronto. He totaled just 10 points on 4-of-16 shooting and looked uncharacteristically disengaged defensively in Wednesday’s 110-97 defeat.

    Against Orlando, Brown notched 20 points — 13 in the third quarter — on 5-of-12 shooting and made all nine of his shots from the free-throw line. He added six assists and six rebounds while making a huge defensive impact with three steals.

    Above all else, Brown’s effort level set the tone for a Celtics team that has looked lethargic over the last month. C’s coach Joe Mazzulla took notice and praised the 2024 NBA Finals MVP after Friday’s win.

    “I liked just how he was thoroughly intense,” Mazzulla said. “I think that’s important for us. He brings a different level of a mentality to us at times, and I thought tonight he brought a great level of intensity.

    “He had 20 points on 12 shots. He has the ability to impact the game without shooting. I thought he just impacted it in many different ways. Even toward the end of the game to close the game, he had the kick-ahead to Al (Horford) in the corner. So his ability to just impact the game in different ways and bring a high level of intensity is important for us to just continue to get better.”

    Twenty points is a modest total by Brown’s standards, but his impact was felt far beyond the scoring column. While Jayson Tatum (30 points) and Kristaps Porzingis (23 points) knocked down shots, Brown thrived in a supporting role with heads-up plays on both ends of the floor.

    After the win, Brown caught up with NBC Sports Boston’s Abby Chin to discuss his outing.

    “For me, I was just trying to get my teammates going,” he said. “The game was kind of slow to start, so instead of just trying to force up shots, I just tried to get my teammates going and I feel like that helped us a little bit. …

    “I’ve had to adjust. It’s a different year, and I just do what the team needs me to do. I’ve been able to evolve, do different things in my career. This team, I’m more of a playmaker so I just embrace it. Just get better in that role and just do what I do.”

    Brown and the C’s will hope to carry the momentum from Friday’s win into the second night of their back-to-back Saturday vs. the Atlanta Hawks. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. ET at TD Garden.

  • New England maps show how much snow Boston will get this weekend


    Southern New England is set to see a snowmaker push through the region Sunday afternoon into Monday morning with the Boston area looking at 3 to 6 inches of snow, likely sticking closer to the lower end of accumulation.

    Regardless of where the storm tracks, Southern New England is set to see all snow or a quick switchover to snow Sunday night when temperatures drop. Most of Northern New England will see only snow.

    A winter storm warning has been issued for 1 p.m., Sunday until 7 a.m., Monday for most of Massachusetts: north and west of Boston, including Worcester County and the Berkshires, as well as southern Vermont and most of Connecticut. A winter storm watch is in effect Sunday for Boston, Norfolk and Providence counties, northern Rhode Island, parts of New Hampshire and Maine.

  • As Cooper Flagg, Duke visit, Boston College basketball is the hottest ticket in town


    Cooper Flagg is in town this weekend, and there are plenty of local fans who want to see him.

    Boston College men’s basketball’s matchup with No. 3 Duke on Saturday at Conte Forum has long been sold out — tickets available through the university ran out in early December — with the get-in price for the cheapest pair of tickets starting at more than $165 (fees included) as of Thursday.

    “Ticket interest is high and that was to be expected with a preseason top team on the schedule and with them now being ranked No. 3 in the country,” said BC associate athletic director Jim O’Neill, who oversees ticketing operations. “Also with Cooper Flagg being a New England kid, [that] has certainly raised the level of interest.”

    The Blue Devils are 15-2 and off to a 7-0 start in Atlantic Coast Conference play, having dispatched Pittsburgh, Notre Dame, and Miami over the course of eight days.

    Flagg, the Maine native who is projected as the top pick in June’s NBA Draft, provided the highlight in that stretch with a scintillating 42-point performance against the Fighting Irish, the most ever scored by a freshman in a men’s ACC game.

    Flagg has largely delivered on the hype as a preseason All-American (having never played a collegiate game) with 18.7 points, 8.2 rebounds, and 4.1 assists per game for the Blue Devils, winners of 11 straight entering Saturday night.

    ACC play has been far less kind to the Eagles, who have followed up an 8-3 nonleague slate with a 1-5 start to the conference schedule. BC has dropped three in a row, with a home loss to Syracuse bookended by road defeats at Georgia Tech and Notre Dame.

    Duke has beaten BC in the last nine matchups between the teams, as well as taking 21 of the last 22, with the lone blip coming in an 89-84 Eagles win at Conte Forum in 2017.

    And while BC has hosted plenty of talented Duke teams over the years — and Flagg’s status as June’s top pick isn’t set in stone — it’s rare that a prospect of his caliber visits Chestnut Hill. The only future No. 1 pick to face the Eagles at Conte Forum this century was Paolo Banchero in 2022. Before that, you have to go all the way back to Georgetown’s Allen Iverson in 1996.

    That’s led to particularly high interest among students, the most loyal of whom will find themselves rewarded with a chance to see basketball’s next big thing up close.

    “For high-demand games for both basketball and hockey, student tickets are based on attendance at earlier home games,” O’Neill explained. “Students who attend the most games have access to the high-demand games.”

    Tip-off at Conte Forum is set for 8 p.m. on Saturday.

  • Cooper Flagg leads Duke’s Blue Devils in game against Boston College Eagles


    Flagg is averaging 19 points, eight rebounds, and four assists for the Blue Devils, who are 15-2 and have won 11 games in a row.

    BOSTON — Cooper Flagg is playing a sold-out game Saturday in Boston, where Duke and Boston College were set to square off.  

    The 18-year-old freshman phenom from Newport will lead his third-ranked Blue Devils into Conte Forum to take on the Eagles. 

    Flagg is averaging 19 points, eight rebounds, and four assists for the Blue Devils, who are 15-2 and have won 11 games in a row. 

    Just last week, the 6-foot-9 Flagg scored 42 points to set a conference freshman single-game scoring record, helping Duke beat Notre Dame 86-78. 

    “I was just out there playing,” Flagg said last Saturday as he sat at his locker afterward surrounded by reporters, according to the Associated Press. “When I’m in the game, I don’t really know what’s going on. I’m just playing locked in.”

    The broken scoring record joins a growing list of astonishing accomplishments early in his career. 

    Saturday night’s game in Boston is the closest trip to Maine for Duke all year, and the game sold out quickly. Media relations officials for Boston College told NEWS CENTER Maine this is the most credentials that have been requested for a BC basketball game in years. 

    According to Victory Live, a company that tracks ticket sales, ticket prices jumped nearly 50 percent compared to Duke’s average road games this season. 

    The game begins at 8 p.m. and will be televised on ESPN. 

    Flagg and several of his teammates were in the stands at TD Garden on Friday night, where Boston Celtics managed to pull itself out of a shooting slump in a victory over the Orlando Magic.

  • Snowstorm headed to Northeast, including DC, Philly, NYC and Boston


    A wintry pattern from late Saturday to Monday morning will dump enough snow to shovel and plow in areas from West Virginia to Maine as well as trigger a slew of travel problems on interstates and at airports, AccuWeather meteorologists warn.

    Much colder air will filter into Northeast states after a fairly mild start to the weekend, with a weak storm bringing some rain and drizzle along the coast. That fresh Arctic air will pave the way for a second storm later this weekend, which will bring snow to many areas.

    The snow will cover streets, major highways and prompt deicing delays at area airports. A surge in flight cancellations is also likely with the storm impacting most major hubs in the Northeast.

    “This will likely end up being the first general snowstorm for portions along and north of the Interstate 95 corridor for the mid-Atlantic and New England, as storms this winter have not hit all of the areas with significant snow all at once,” AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Tom Kines said. “Portions of eastern New England have received hardly any snow at all so far this winter.”

    The steadiest swath of snow may be just to the northwest of Interstate 95 from Washington, D.C. to Boston. Locations farther north and west of the major artery in the more traditional snowy spots of the northern and western suburbs of the major cities can also pick up a round of heavy snowfall from this event.

    This zone is forecast to receive 3-6 inches of snow, with the storm’s fast-forward speed preventing much heavier amounts along this corridor. However, some spots in the mountains of West Virginia and from east-central Pennsylvania through southeastern Maine can pick up over 6 inches.

    “We are very confident that snowfall amounts will tend to ramp up from southwest to northeast in the region with the greatest amounts likely in New England,” AccuWeather Chief On-Air Meteorologist Bernie Rayno said.

    The snow will move into Philadelphia for tailgating ahead of the National Football League playoff game at Lincoln Financial Field, creating slippery conditions and poor visibility that can be a factor in the game. Snowfall rates of one-half to three-quarters of an inch per hour are possible later in the afternoon and evening for a time around Philadelphia and much of I-95.

    Snowfall with the storm could reach 1 foot in the mountains of New England and, depending on the storm track, parts of the Poconos in northeastern Pennsylvania and the Catskill Mountains in southeastern New York state could approach that number as well. A sharp northwestern cutoff to the accumulating snow is likely with the storm, so areas in western Pennsylvania and western and central New York may receive little or no snow prior to the ramp-up of lake-effect snow.

    “There is some data that suggests the storm could strengthen fast enough to be dubbed a bomb cyclone,” Kines said.

    The storm’s central barometric pressure would have to plummet 0.71 of an inch of mercury (24 millibars) or more in 24 hours or less, most likely from Sunday morning to Monday morning, with a track from near southeastern Virginia to Atlantic Canada.

    The storm will strengthen enough to create harsh winds in its wake from Sunday night through Monday and into Tuesday. The storm’s circulation will help pull in the coldest air of the winter that traveled all the way from Siberia.

    The anticipated frigid conditions and safety concerns have caused organizers to move the presidential inauguration indoors on Monday, which is also Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

    Areas made wet and slushy by the storm will be at risk of freezing solid on Monday with little or no natural melting anticipated through the middle of the week.

    More winter storms brewing in the Southern states will be monitored closely for a turn up the Atlantic coast next week as well.

    Get ready, Northeast! A massive snowstorm is barreling towards the region, with major cities like Washington D.C., Philadelphia, New York City, and Boston all in its path. Forecasters are predicting heavy snowfall, high winds, and dangerously cold temperatures as the storm moves through the area.

  • How much snow are we getting in Mass., NH? – NBC Boston


    The excitement is rising as our probability for snow continues to increase for Sunday night in New England.  First we enjoy a little warmup and a little chance for rain on Saturday.

    Weekend outlook

    Today our temps are warm enough to melt away some ice and a little snow we picked up on Cape Cod last night (around 0.5”).  Overnight lows drop to below freezing but rebound quickly on a gusty south wind Saturday.  Highs jump to the 40s and we have scattered rain moving in by late afternoon through late night.  After that system, we open the door to colder air and the set up for snow Sunday.  The morning starts off with highs in the 30s and increasing clouds as a coastal low develops off the Carolina coast. 

    Timing and snowfall totals

    We’ve issued a First Alert for Sunday’s snowstorm.

    The entire day remains dry, with some clouds and pretty calm conditions. Then by the evening, our storm heads our way. By 7 p.m., a few snow showers move in south to north as a northeasterly wind takes hold. As the low strengthens and passes by “the benchmark,” it swings in more wind and snow. Some ocean enhanced bands are possible, and this helps to crank out higher snow rates, which helps to cool our temps to increase some snow totals. 

    By midnight, our mixing continues to turn to more snow on the South Shore, in Boston, and on the Cape and islands. That rain/snow line sets up near the upper Cape initially and then moves southeast overnight. 

    The back half of the storm is where we get the 1-3 inches for southeastern Massachusetts. Meanwhile in Boston we see steady snowfall for several hours and for areas inland. 

    By Monday morning, we plow out of 3-6 inches of snow. Some areas could see more based on fluffier snow consistency inland.  

    The storm tapers and moves away by noon Monday. This leads to more arctic air and highs in the 20s. 

    Wind and coastal concerns

    As is typical with an offshore low, we have a period of northeast wind gusts. The pressure center lowers enough to gusts up to 30-40 mph at the coast, with inland spots up to 20 mph overnight Sunday. While this isn’t quite damaging wind, it will be a nuisance wind on top of periods of heavy snow. 

    The shoreline will see some erosion on beaches as waves increase Monday morning as the low departs to the Canadian Maritimes. No coastal flooding is expected since tides are astronomically low. 

    Polar vortex brings coldest air in 2 years

    Prepare for some wicked cold. The coldest air in two years creeps in Monday with highs in the 20s, but wait… there’s more. Highs fall to the teens Tuesday and Wednesday with lows around zero in southern New England. 

    A First Alert has been issued for both days, with wind chills expected to be below zero. 

    We modify temps later next week as nearby storm systems bring in some precipitation chances to the northeast. Stay tuned on our more active weather pattern next week.

    In Massachusetts, areas including Boston, Worcester, and Springfield are expected to see 6-10 inches of snow, with localized amounts up to a foot possible. In New Hampshire, cities such as Manchester and Nashua could see similar snow totals.

  • Wet Saturday, snowy Sunday in Massachusetts – Boston News, Weather, Sports


    We’ve got a split forecast for the upcoming weekend in Massachusetts, with warmer temperatures and rain for Saturday before a cooldown brings in snow Sunday.

    Saturday is going to showcase a chilly rain. Highs will be relatively mild for this time of year in the low to mid 40s, but that’s still a pretty miserable temperature when it’s accompanied by rain.

    While the morning will be dry, rain will roll in during the afternoon. It’ll be raining the rest of the day through 8-9 p.m. Overnight lows Saturday night into Sunday morning will drop down to the low 30s.

    Sunday morning will also start dry. By 3-4 p.m. the snow will begin moving into our area, and that’ll last until early Monday morning.

    Most of the area will see a range of 3-5 inches, with isolated amounts up to 6 inches possible. Snow totals will be a little lighter on the Cape and islands. This will change as the weekend progresses, however, so always check in with the latest updates.

    Otherwise, Sunday’s highs will reach the mid to upper 30s but the temperature will drop as the snow rolls in.

    After that, get ready for a bitter cold blast!

    Monday’s lows will be down to the teens with afternoon highs in the low 20s.

    The coldest days will be Tuesday and Wednesday. Lows will get pretty close to zero degrees both mornings with afternoon highs only in the mid to upper teens. It’ll be dry those days and mostly to partly sunny. Thursday morning will be frigid in the single digits but at least afternoon highs will get into the low to mid 20s. Friday will be “warmer” with lows in the teens and highs back to average in the low to mid 30s.

  • DiJonai Carrington talks rise to WNBA stardom, ‘crazy’ experience at TD Garden – NBC Sports Boston


    DiJonai Carrington envisioned her rise to WNBA superstardom two years before she earned Most Improved Player and All-Defensive First Team honors.

    In 2022, the Connecticut Sun star jotted down “Most Improved Player” and Sixth Woman of the Year” as her WNBA goals. Last season, Carrington earned a starting role and enjoyed a breakout campaign with 12.7 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 1.6 steals per game while earning a reputation as one of the league’s best defenders.

    On the latest episode of “Hoopin’” with Kayla Burton, Carrington reflected on setting and accomplishing those lofty goals.

    “I knew the work I was putting in and I know what I’m capable of,” Carrington told Burton. “I just was ready for the moment and it was just about opportunity for me. Once the opportunity came, I knew that everything else would kind of follow.”

    Carrington leveled up in every aspect of her game in 2024, but when she looks back at her impressive season, she is most proud of how her effort level never dwindled.

    “The biggest thing I was impressed with myself was my motor and the consistency,” Carrington said. “It’s easy to be good in spurts. It’s easy to be good for half a season for a few games against specific teams. But it’s hard to be consistent and to do that throughout a whole season on offense and defense.

    “So I think it was just being in shape and like I said, being prepared for that moment and just discipline, because I was able to just come in and be a spark the previous three years. This year it was like, no, you have to be able to sustain this for 30 minutes, however long I’m in the game.”

    On Aug. 2, 2024, Carrington and the Sun played in front of a sold-out crowd at TD Garden. On a Tuesday night, 19,156 tickets were sold to mark the most for a Sun game in the franchise’s history. The experience perfectly capped off Carrington’s unforgettable year.

    “That was crazy. Just that NBA arena-type vibe was just insane,” she said. “Having our big old posters — it was just so much buzz around it within the New England community and I think that was so exciting. And how excited the city got for the game was just insane. … So I’m excited to hopefully do more of that in the future.”

    The Sun will return to TD Garden for a showdown with phenom Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever on July 15.
