    How It Began

    According to Jack’s daughter, the actor’s romance with Boyle began with a bang — or a minor car accident in Hollywood.

    “One quiet summer night in 1999, the nascent couple was dressed for dinner, the engine of his Mercedes the only sound,” Lorraine wrote in Vanity Fair. “My father moved to make a left on Mulholland from Coldwater, just a quarter mile from our house, when their car collided with another. When Dad finally came to, head dripping blood, he looked up to see Lara crawling out of the sunroof. She reportedly screamed, ‘I can’t be here!’ and abandoned the steaming hunk of metal like it was a dead horse.”

    Lorraine first heard about the crash from a mother at school. She later realized her dad wasn’t exactly ready to share his new girlfriend with his family.

    As Lorraine explained, “Not knowing the news would be picked up by the tabloids, he wanted to introduce Lara on his own terms.”

    It appears Jack and Boyle’s on-and-off romance lasted nearly seven years. The two were first together from 1999 to 2004 and were later photographed together on vacation in St. Tropez in 2006. Boyle went on to meet her future husband, Donald Ray Thomas, just a few months later.

    “That is seven years of great times,” Boyle told People when sharing memories of her romance with Jack. “It’s seven years of wonderful.”

    “In reality, I have no clue why my father and Lara broke up,” Lorraine continued. “I don’t know if he cried or if she cried, but I certainly did.”

    Jack Nicholson’s daughter, Lorraine Nicholson, had her own love story with his ex Lara Flynn Boyle.

    Lorraine, 34, wrote an essay for Vanity Fair Friday where she looked back on the special bond she created with Boyle, 54, when the “Twin Peaks” actress dated Jack, 87, from 1999 to 2004.

    “For many girls, best friends are their first loves. They spend all their time together. Learn from each other. Protect each other,” Lorraine wrote. “And when the time comes for boys to enter the picture — and a best friend’s attention is split between them and another — it is their first great heartbreak.

    “When I was nine, my best friend was 30-year-old ingenue Lara Flynn Boyle,” Lorraine added.

    Jack’s daughter recalled how the couple’s relationship “began with a bang” in 1999, when they got into a car accident on Mulholland Drive.

    Lorraine explained that at the time, there was “spectacle” over Jack and Boyle’s relationship because they were 33 years apart in age. But according to Lorraine, “no one could see they were actually falling in love.”

    Jack eventually introduced Boyle to his six children, including Lorraine, who said it was a moment she’ll “never forget.”

    “She came down the outdoor staircase to join us by the pool,” Lorraine recalled of meeting Boyle. “I remember the sun reflecting on the water, the sound of wind chimes in the trees. Most importantly, I remember what Lara wore — a thong bathing suit with flames licking up the crotch. We didn’t have to know she had been nominated for an Emmy that year for her work on ‘The Practice’ for my brother and I to know we were in the presence of a powerful person.”

    Lorraine said that she and Boyle connected almost instantly.

    “With extrasensory intuition, she sensed I was a self-harmer and told me stories about the time she had to wear knee socks to hide her scratched-up shins,” Lorraine shared, adding that Boyle “made me feel like my pain mattered.”

    “While the unavailability of my parents was not exactly rats-in-trash-bags level, I was a kid who felt, despite everything I had materially, there was something missing in my life,” Lorraine continued. “Lara did not belittle these feelings. She told all these stories with a cigarette and a smile, because she was a survivor.”

    Lorraine also said that Boyle “acted as a bridge” between Jack and his six children, whom he has with five different women, including Lorraine’s mom, Rebecca Broussard.

    “Suddenly, we were doing things we had never done before,” Lorraine remembered. “In Aspen, we went whitewater rafting down the Colorado River. In one particularly traitorous game of Uno, my brother and I kamakazied ourselves so that while we wouldn’t win, my father wouldn’t either. After he stormed out of the room, followed by a trail of very Nicholson obscenities, it was Lara who put a stop to his sulking and lured him back upstairs.”

    She added, “Since his relationship with my mom, I had never seen my father with another woman. Like in the ‘Mary Poppins’ films, I understand why it was Lara who sent the other applicants blowing ass-over-heels down the street.”

    Lorraine called Jack and Boyle’s relationship “a point of no return” because Boyle “went from being a woman on the verge of stardom — a person validated for her work — to a mere celebrity.”

    At the end of her essay, Lorraine wrote, “For this article, I asked Lara if I could see her for the first time in more than 20 years to talk about the time we shared. She declined.”

    “Of course, this feels like being rejected by Mommy,” she said. “But the truth is, whether I see Lara again or not is almost irrelevant, because I carry so much of her in me.”

    Boyle, who has been married to Texas real estate developer Donald Ray Thomas II since 2006, made a rare comment about Nicholson in an interview with People last year.

    She said the exes still keep in touch, but “we’re not hanging out.”

    “The world of Jack is always here,” said Boyle. “There’s no retiring for the world of Jack. Never.”

  • Jack Nicholson’s Daughter Recalls Dad’s Romance with Lara Flynn Boyle


    Jack Nicholson’s daughter Lorraine Nicholson is reflecting on her dad’s relationship with Lara Flynn Boyle and the positive influence the actress had on the family dynamic.

    “We didn’t have to know she had been nominated for an Emmy that year for her work on The Practice for my brother and I to know we were in the presence of a powerful person,” continued Lorraine, whose mother, Rebecca Broussard, was in a relationship with Nicholson from 1989 to 1994. (Nicholson and Broussard also share a son, actor Ray Nicholson, 32.)

    Lorraine recalled her father’s house being the opposite of her mother’s loud, boisterous home. “We lived among an almost mausoleum-level quiet. By his own admission, my dad had a hard time connecting to us as children — though he loved beautiful women, he had no interest in playing with dolls,” she wrote.

    Enter Boyle — aka “the Mary Poppins of Mulholland Drive” — who played Barbie dolls with Lorraine and slept in the same room if the young girl had bad dreams.

    Boyle, a “gangly Irish American” who was picked apart in the press for her appearance, also helped Lorraine deal with her own insecurities at an impressionable age: “Lara taught me that much like femininity, adolescence can be depressing and confusing, but it can also be full of freedom and unencumbered play.”

    Their play also extended to family time. “For my father, Lara acted as a bridge between him and his children. Suddenly, we were doing things we had never done before.     Lorraine knew even at that young age that the relationship between her father and Boyle wouldn’t stand the test of time. “And yet when I was with her, I had no clue what I would do without her,” she wrote.

    The relationship did indeed come to an end, severing Lorraine’s ties, too. According to the writer, they have not seen each other for more than 20 years, but Boyle’s influence left a mark on Lorraine.

    “I carry so much of her in me,” she wrote. “When she descended from the sky with her magic carpet bag, I was still figuring out the type of woman I wanted to be. In Lara, I saw characteristics that I liked— her irreverent sense of humor, her refusal to conform, her compassion for the underdog — and made them my own.”

  • Colorado looks to avoid worst conference start in Tad Boyle era against BYU


    The Colorado Buffaloes (9-8, Big 12 0-6) haven’t had the prettiest start to conference play. In fact, another loss would tie the worst beginning in head coach Tad Boyle’s 15-year tenure.

    However, wins and losses aren’t the worry for Boyle and his inexperienced roster navigating the toughest basketball conference in the country.

    “I’m not focusing on winning and losing, as crazy as that sounds, I’m focusing on getting this team better,” Boyle said Monday afternoon. “I’m focusing on improvement, both individually and collectively.”

    Most recently, sophomore forward Bangot Dak has been alone in that growth. He notably went for 19 points, eight boards and eight swats against Cincinnati, then another 15 points and five boards against Oklahoma State. The collective aspect didn’t follow suit, leading to losses five and six of conference play.

    Still, similar to his Buffalo teammates, Dak has lacked consistency across the season. And, so have the Brigham Young Cougars (11-6, 2-4) who visit Boulder late Tuesday night hoping to snap a five-game road losing skid, setting the stage for an interesting Big 12 showdown at the CU Events Center. 

    Losing an overtime, rivalry affair to Utah hours after Colorado lost to the Cowboys on Saturday, the Cougars’ notable players have struggled to begin Big 12 play. BYU’s leading scorer junior guard Richie Saunders (13.9 points per game), has been held to three or fewer field goals in three of the last six games. Highly touted freshman guard Egor Demin hasn’t found the efficiency he’s hoped for, being limited to 41.5/28.1/63.4 shooting splits. And, top 50 recruit Kanon Catchings has recently been demoted to the bench, only averaging 9.3 minutes across the last three games.

    Yet, Boyle understands the hype surrounding the three, and the rest of BYU’s roster. Led by newly-hired, former Pheonix Suns assistant Kevin Young, the Cougars’ lineup is full of talent looking to showcase their skills on the offensive side of the floor.

    “One through nine, they’re the most talented team we’ve played offensively,” Boyle said. “I really believe that. They run good stuff. They’ve got really good players.”

    Despite his inefficiency, Demin facilitates the offense Boyle is so high on. At 6-foot-9, the tallest Cougar, he dishes out the second-most assists per game in the Big 12 with 5.7 a night. Accounting for almost a third of BYU’s 17.2 assists per game (26th in the nation), the Russian native looks for his 3-point shooters; Saunders (42.5%, 5.0 3PA), starting guard Trevin Knell (42.5%, 5.1 3PA) and occasional starting guard Dallin Hall (37.5%, 3.7 3PA). While the accuracy has yet to follow in conference play, shooting the conference’s ninth-best 3-point mark at 32.3%, the Cougars are not afraid to get them up, averaging 26.8 3-point attempts per game (second-most in Big 12). BYU is 9-1 when making 10 or more 3-pointers, though CU has only allowed ASU and UCF to hit that mark.

    The lack of height makes Brigham Young a team of few 2-point attempts, but it usually finds open looks inside the arc within its offense, making a conference-best 55.1% of its 2-pointers. Overall, the Cougars have shot 44.2% from the field to begin Big 12 play (sixth-best), scoring 70.3 points per game (seventh-best).

    While heightened due to Demin’s genius, the offensive success can also be attributed to the five other players besides Saunders and Demin averaging over eight points a game. Bench forward Fousseyni Traore is a solid scorer (10 PPG, 61.8% FG%), Knell is averaging 9.9 points per contest on 47.7% shooting, Catchings is notching 8.9 points despite his recent lack of success and bench guard Dawson Baker is good for 8.3 points. BYU’s starting center, 6-foot-7 Keba Keita, though not an eight-plus point-per-game scorer, is a solid lob threat, rolls to the rim hard and averages 3.1 offensive rebounds per game. And, even though Saunders has had his recent off-nights, he’s gone for 26 or more points in two conference games thus far, hanging 30 on Arizona State. 

    “Good defensive teams can make it really, really hard at the rim and they can guard the 3,” Boyle said. “So that’s what we’re gonna have to do. It’s a hell of a challenge because we have not shown the ability to do that outside of the [Connecticut] game.”

    Where Colorado can potentially take advantage, however, is on the glass and offensive side of the floor. With a taller lineup, headlined by 6-foot-11 Dak and 6-foot-10 Elijah Malone, CU hopes to outrebound the ninth-best Big 12 rebounding squad, even if BYU averages two more rebounds per contest during conference play. While it hasn’t happened often, BYU is winless in the three games it hasn’t won the rebound battle. The Cougars are also a bottom-six offensive-rebounding team at 8.3 offensive boards per game, a good sign for a Colorado squad that gave up 22 second-chance points to the Cowboys.

    BYU’s offensive success also comes at the expense of its defense, which has allowed 71.2 points per game (seventh-best) on 43.2% shooting (10th-best). Big 12 teams are shooting slightly better (34.6%) from deep than the Cougars on just as many attempts (26.5 3PA; most 3PA allowed in conference). Having shot just 27.4% from deep during conference play, the Buffs hope to flip the script against one of the Big 12’s worst 3-point defenses.

    With decent offense, especially when their leading score Julian Hammond III (13.5 PPG) gets going, the Buffs need to take care of the ball. Averaging a conference-high 16.2 turnovers per game, Colorado is taking a conference-low 53.7 field goal attempts a game, wasting its 43.8% field goal percentage. CU may not necessarily be in the clear against a team that forces 10 turnovers a night, but it has seen far more tenacious defenses thus far.

    “BYU is a hell of a lot better than their 2-4 league record,” Boyle said. “…They could easily be 4-2, not 2-4. But very talented team.”



    The Colorado Buffaloes are set to face off against the BYU Cougars in a crucial matchup as they look to avoid their worst conference start in head coach Tad Boyle’s era. After dropping their first two Pac-12 games, the Buffaloes are in desperate need of a win to turn their season around.

    BYU, on the other hand, is coming off a strong start to their season and will be looking to continue their momentum against Colorado. The Cougars boast a potent offense led by star guard Alex Barcello, who is averaging 17.6 points per game.

    For Colorado, senior guard McKinley Wright IV will need to step up and lead the team to victory. Wright is averaging 15.3 points and 4.8 assists per game this season and will be crucial in orchestrating the Buffaloes’ offense.
