  • Israelis brace to learn the fate of Hamas’ youngest hostage, taken captive as a baby

TEL AVIV — On lampposts, in shop windows and on smartphone screens across Israel, the posters show a smiling, red-headed baby boy clutching a pink elephant.

And now the country is bracing to learn Kfir Bibas’ fate.

The youngest hostage still in captivity in Gaza, Kfir was just shy of 9 months old when he was kidnapped during the Hamas-led terrorist attack Oct.7, 2023. On Saturday, he turned 2, having never known a birthday outside captivity.

Along with his 5-year-old brother, Ariel, and his parents, Yarden and Shiri Bibas, Kfir is among the 33 hostages expected to be freed during the first phase of the ceasefire deal, according to the Israeli government. But it is unclear if the toddler is still alive.

“Not knowing is so hard that sometimes I just want to scream,” Ofri Bibas-Levy, Kfir’s aunt, told NBC News earlier this week. “Just tell me, even if it’s the worst thing,”

Clutching her two sons, as fighters bark orders, Shiri Bibas looked terrified in a video taken near their home in kibbutz Nir Oz in southern Israel on the day of the Hamas attacks.

Footage of the trio being herded by gunmen through Gaza’s southern city of Khan Younis later that day would prove to be the last known sighting of them.

While all other child hostages were released in exchange for Palestinian prisoners during a one-week ceasefire in November 2023, the Bibas family never emerged from Gaza.

On one of the final days of the brief pause in fighting, Hamas released a statement claiming that Shiri Bibas and the children had been killed in an Israeli airstrike. It said Yarden Bibas was still alive and in captivity.

At the time, Israel’s military said the claim could not be confirmed, but in February 2024 it acknowledged its fears for the family.

“Based on the information available to us, we are very concerned and worried about the condition and well-being of Shiri and the children,” Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari, the Israel Defense Forces’ chief spokesperson, told a news conference.

Now, the Bibas family is daring to believe that more than a year of agonizing uncertainty may soon be coming to an end one way or another. “We know will bring us some kind of certainty, but we are very scared as well,” Ofri Bibas-Levy said of the ceasefire deal. “It could be a good certainty or a bad one.”

The 38-year-old occupational therapist said she was still holding out hope that Shiri Bibas and her two sons might be alive, “but we know the condition the hostages are being kept in.”

“So for a toddler and a baby, it’s difficult even if they survived the attack that Hamas said they were killed in,” she added. “We’re very worried, very, very worried.”

Kfir’s father, Yarden Bibas, was kidnapped separately from his wife and children and held in a different part of Gaza, according to hostages who were with him in captivity and since freed.

Nili Margalit, a neighbor in Nir Oz, said she last saw Yarden Bibas on Nov. 30, 2023, just before she was released in the first ceasefire.

A Hamas guard ordered her to tell Yarden Bibas that his wife and children were dead, but “I refused to do that,” she said. Instead she told her captor that “if he wanted to say such a horrible sentence to Yarden, then he is the one that has to look him in the eyes and tell him.”

Hamas did inform Yarden Bibas and the next day released a video of the distraught father. Ofri Bibas-Levy said: “I thought: I’m losing Yarden now because I couldn’t think that he could bear and survive this thing they told him.”

    Yarden, Ariel, Shiri, Kfir Bibas.

Yarden Bibas is also slated for release in the first phase of the ceasefire deal, which came into effect Sunday after almost 15 months of Israel’s military campaign in the Gaza Strip. Health officials in the Palestinian enclave says more than 47,000 people have been killed since the start of the war, which began after Hamas launched multipronged attacks on Israel, killing 1,200 and taking around 250 people hostage, according to official tallies.

Bibas-Levy said she thinks constantly of her younger brother, “every second of every day; I don’t know if he’s dead or alive, if he ate today, if he showered, if somebody’s torturing him, if he’s sick, if he’s well. I don’t know anything.”

She was speaking at the edge of the so-called Hostage Square, the plaza in central Tel Aviv where families of those held in Hamas captivity have rallied for 15 months demanding their release.

Many in the crowd alongside her were carrying stuffed animals in honor of Kfir’s second birthday, an echo of the pink elephant he is holding in his hostage poster.

The family had searched the wreckage of Nir Oz many times in the hope of finding Kfir’s elephant but without success. And then, just days before the most recent ceasefire was signed, it turned up in the corner of a nursery.

“It was really very emotional,” Bibas-Levy said. “And hopefully a good sign, maybe.”

In a heart-wrenching turn of events, Israelis are bracing themselves to learn the fate of Hamas’ youngest hostage, who was taken captive as a baby. The child, now a young adult, has been held by the militant group for over two decades, leaving their family and the nation in a state of perpetual anguish.

The news of the hostage’s possible release or demise has sent shockwaves throughout Israel, with emotions running high as the country waits anxiously for updates on the situation. Many are hoping for a miracle, praying for the safe return of the long-lost captive who has become a symbol of resilience and hope in the face of adversity.

As the nation holds its breath, the Israeli government is working tirelessly to secure the release of the hostage, exploring all possible avenues for negotiation and intervention. The fate of the youngest captive remains uncertain, but the unwavering determination of the Israeli people to bring them home safely is a testament to the strength and unity of the nation in times of crisis.

Stay tuned for updates on this developing story as Israelis around the world continue to hold out hope for the safe return of the youngest hostage of Hamas.

Canadian dollar and Mexican peso fall on Trump tariff threat; UK house price growth slows

Good morning, and welcome to our live coverage of business, economics and financial markets.

Canada and Mexico are bracing for the impact of 25% US tariffs after Donald Trump said they would be imposed on Saturday.

Trump blamed the countries for his decision to impose tariffs. Both have a close trading relationship with the US, partly because of North American free trade deals, including the one he passed in 2020. Bloomberg News reported that he said:

We’ll be announcing the tariffs on Canada and Mexico for a number of reasons. Number one is the people that have poured into our country so horribly and so much. Number two are the drugs, fentanyl and everything else that have come into the country. Number three are the massive subsidies that we’re giving to Canada and to Mexico in the form of deficits.

The Canadian dollar fell 0.4% during Asian market trading on Friday, while the Mexican peso slumped by 0.6% against the US dollar.

Oil prices also rose. The price for futures of West Texas Intermediate, the North American oil benchmark, rose by 0.6% to $73.17 per barrel, while prices for Brent crude futures, the North Sea benchmark, rose by 0.3%. Trump has not said whether Canadian oil will be subject to tariffs, although that would run counter to his hopes for lower oil prices.

Bob Savage, head of markets strategy and insights at BNY, a US investment bank, said that the emergence of the DeepSeek AI competition earlier this month and Trump’s tariff threats could puncture the buoyant mood on financial markets. The combination could be an “inflection point” in the mood among investors.

Our data show that investors are getting used to Trump’s policy shifts and rhetoric. Fear of a meaningful change in immigration policy, tariffs and spending has not been borne out.

However, Savage warned that “investing requires greater clarity about the scope, size and reach of Trump’s tariffs”. He wrote:

Our mood index, which captures equity buying against bill selling, remains extremely positive but with peaks this week, suggesting significant downside risks for the month ahead.

BNY’s mood index showed that the attitude to risk on equity and bond markets has shifted towards the negative, after the emergence of the DeepSeek AI model and Donald Trump’s tariff threats. Photograph: BNY

Mohit Kumar, who covers global economics at Jefferies, a US investment bank, said:

It is possible that Trump goes ahead with the 25% announcement for Mexico and Canada, which would be market negative. However, we still view tariffs as a negotiating tool and even if Trump does go ahead with the tariffs, it will be followed by a period of intense negotiations and eventually a portion of tariffs will be pulled back. But come Monday morning, there is a possibility of market volatility around tariff news.

UK house price growth slowed says Nationwide

The price of an average UK home rose by 4.1% year-on-year in January, a “modest slowing” compared with December, according to Nationwide, the UK’s largest building society.

House prices increased by 0.1% month on month, after taking account of seasonal effects. That leaves the average price at £268,213, according to the transactions Nationwide tracked.

Robert Gardner, Nationwide’s chief economist, said:

The housing market continues to show resilience despite ongoing affordability pressures.

While there has been a modest improvement over the last year, affordability remains stretched by historic standards. A prospective buyer earning the average UK income and buying a typical first-time buyer property with a 20% deposit would have a monthly mortgage payment equivalent to 36% of their take-home pay – well above the long-run average of 30%.

    The agenda

    • 8:55am GMT: Germany unemployment rate (January; previous: 6.1%; consensus: 6.2%)

    • 9am GMT: European Central Bank survey of forecasters

    • 1pm GMT: Germany inflation rate (January; prev.: 2.6%; cons.: 2.6%)

    • 1:30pm GMT: US core personal consumption expenditure inflation rate (December; prev.: 0.1%; cons.: 0.2%)

On Saturday, Canada and Mexico are preparing for potential tariffs imposed by the Trump administration as trade tensions continue to escalate. The two countries are bracing for the impact on their economies and industries, with fears of increased costs and disrupted supply chains.

Meanwhile, in the UK, house price growth has slowed as uncertainty surrounding Brexit and potential interest rate hikes weigh on the housing market. This slowdown in growth could have implications for the overall economy and consumer confidence.

  • Biggest US trading allies brace for a ‘game of chicken’ with Trump’s tariffs | US news

America’s biggest trading partners are bracing for Donald Trump to impose sweeping tariffs on their exports after the US president repeated his threat to hit Canada and Mexico with new duties.

Officials in Ottawa and Mexico City have drawn up plans to retaliate against Washington with tariffs of their own, raising the prospect of a damaging trade war. Businesses inside the US and across the world have warned of widespread disruption if the Trump administration pushes ahead.

Trump repeatedly pledged on the campaign trail to use tariffs to revive the US economy, disregarding many economists’ concerns that imposing higher duties on goods from overseas would exacerbate inflation, rather than rapidly bring down prices, as the president has promised.

While the Trump campaign mooted a universal tariff on all foreign goods, the Trump administration has so far opted to target specific US trading partners. The president has made clear that China and the European Union are in his sights, but has so far focused on America’s closest neighbors.

Weeks after his election victory last November, Trump announced on his own social network that upon his return to office he would “sign all necessary documents” to impose a 25% tariff on Mexico and Canada. Mexico must stop “illegal aliens” from crossing its border with the US, he said, and Canada must halt the flow of drugs like fentanyl. “Until such time that they do, it is time for them to pay a very big price!”

Trump did not, in fact, sign these documents following his inauguration. Instead, he introduced a deadline – 1 February – by which both countries are supposed to resolve his concerns.

Asked about the deadline on Thursday, he said: “We may or may not. We’re going to make that determination probably tonight.”

Claudia Sheinbaum, the Mexican president, has already taken Trump through the various migration initiatives her government has undertaken. Experts have raised questions over Trump’s demand from Canada, with so little fentanyl entering the US through its northern border that the US Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) omitted to even mention Canada in a 2020 report.

Unswayed by such details, in recent weeks Trump has claimed his administration will raise “hundreds of billions of dollars, and even trillions of dollars” through tariffs that would boost the US economy. He has spoken of establishing an “external revenue service” to collect the money.

While he and his allies continue to talk up tariffs as a viable financial revenue stream for the US, Trump – who as both politician and reality TV star has spoken highly of his dealmaking prowess – has previously raised them as a negotiating tactic, only to withdraw the threat.

This strategy played out less than a week after his inauguration, when the White House threatened Colombia with tariffs and sanctions as punishment for its refusal to accept military flights carrying deportees. Colombia later agreed, and the threat was withdrawn.

In Canada, ministers have expressed optimism that a resolution by Saturday remains possible. “I remain hopeful we’re going to be able to solve this. We’ve been doing it for 150 years together,” David McGuinty, the public safety minister, told reporters. “I don’t see why we can’t do it now.”

Since Trump’s initial social media post about the Canadian border, officials in Ottawa have pledged to spend C$1.3bn for new measures, including the use of two Black Hawk helicopters and 60 drones.

But it stands ready to hit back. A first round of retaliatory tariffs would cause minimal damage to the US, covering C$37bn of its exports to Canada, and if needed, Canada’s federal government plans to escalate by imposing tariffs on C$110bn worth of goods.

“The reality is that a large, uncontrolled bully is using his position as the most powerful political leader in the world, to put pressure on a whole range of allies,” said Lawrence Herman, an international trade lawyer and senior fellow at the CD Howe Institute. “We have to, in Canada and the rest of the world, recognize that we’ve entered a new era.

“With the Trump administration, there are no rules. There is no respect for international treaties or agreements. There is no longer value to the US signature on international documents.”

In Mexico, meanwhile, the government has sent signals it is prepared to do more on migration and fentanyl trafficking – even notching up a record seizure soon after Trump’s threats began – but it has also sought to play down the prospects of a trade war.

“We don’t think [the tariffs] will happen. And if they do, we have our plan,” Sheinbaum said on Wednesday.

“People are worried here, and there is a sense of uncertainty – which is what Donald Trump seeks to create,” said Kenneth Smith Ramos, Mexico’s former chief negotiator during talks over the USMCA free trade deal, struck between the US, Mexico and Canada during the first Trump administration.

“It’s a bit like a game of chicken: the two cars are hurtling towards each other at top speed,” he said. “Mexico has to send the signal that its car is not a little one but a big one that could also hurt the United States.”

Exports account for roughly 40% of Mexico’s gross domestic product (GDP), and more than 80% of them go to the US. While the country would try to diversify its export markets in the event of an economic dispute with the US, “you’re never going to be able to replace the US market with any other country”, said Smith Ramos.

Ministers have stressed that “cool heads” are required in the face of Trump’s public threats and declined to disclose their plan of action if tariffs are imposed. “But you can be sure we have studied it a great deal,” Marcelo Ebrard, the Mexican economic secretary, said recently. “There will be no surprises, nor untimely reactions.”

The United States’ biggest trading allies, including Canada, Mexico, and the European Union, are preparing for a potential showdown with the Trump administration over proposed tariffs on steel and aluminum imports. In what is being described as a “game of chicken,” these countries are bracing for a trade war with the US that could have far-reaching consequences for the global economy.

President Trump’s announcement of tariffs on steel and aluminum has sparked widespread concern among US trading partners, who fear that these measures could lead to retaliatory actions and escalate into a full-blown trade war. The European Union has already threatened to impose tariffs on US goods in response to Trump’s proposed measures, while Canada and Mexico have also expressed their opposition to the tariffs.

The stakes are high for all parties involved, as a trade war could have a significant impact on the global economy and lead to higher prices for consumers in all countries. As the US’s biggest trading partners, these countries are now faced with the difficult task of finding a way to resolve the issue without resorting to protectionist measures that could harm their own economies.

The coming weeks will be crucial in determining the outcome of this potential trade war, as negotiations between the US and its trading allies are set to take place in an effort to find a compromise. In the meantime, businesses and consumers around the world will be closely watching the developments, hoping for a resolution that will avoid a damaging trade war.

  • Eagles’ Jalen Hurts anticipates wearing knee brace vs. Commanders

PHILADELPHIA — Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts said his injured left knee is “progressing” but he does anticipate wearing a brace for Sunday’s NFC title game against the Washington Commanders.

All eyes have been on Hurts’ knee this week after an awkward takedown in the third quarter of the divisional round of the playoffs against the Los Angeles Rams in which his left leg was pinned under him.

He finished the game but lacked his usual mobility. He had six carries for 71 yards and a touchdown before the injury; the only rushing stats he had after came on a kneel-down to end the game.

His teammates have been offering positive reports on Hurts this week. Right tackle Lane Johnson said following Thursday’s practice that Hurts “was mobile, he was moving.” Left tackle Jordan Mailata noted that his QB has had “good energy.”

“I’m expecting Jalen to be Jalen,” said running back Saquon Barkley. “He’s going to show up for us, he’s going to make plays. He’s a winner. He’s got the ‘it’ factor.”

Elsewhere on the injury front, tight end Dallas Goedert (ankle) and starting center Cam Jurgens (back) practiced for the first time this week Friday. Goedert was listed as a full participant, according to the injury report, while Jurgens was limited and is questionable for Sunday’s affair.

Jurgens declined to talk in the locker room afterwards. Left guard Landon Dickerson was taking snaps at center in Jurgens’ absence earlier this week and would likely get the call if Jurgens can’t play.

Goedert left no mystery, saying he was good to go for Sunday.

“I feel great today. It was a great practice out there, I was moving around really well, so I’m really happy with where I’m at,” he said.

Rookie standout corner Quinyon Mitchell left the Rams game with a shoulder injury but has practiced this week and has also said he will play Sunday.

Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts has been dealing with a knee injury, but he is anticipating that he will be wearing a knee brace when the team faces off against the Washington Commanders this weekend.

Hurts suffered the injury during a game earlier in the season, and since then, he has been wearing a brace to help stabilize his knee and prevent further damage. Despite the discomfort, Hurts has been able to play through the injury and lead the Eagles to some impressive victories.

While wearing a knee brace can be restricting for a quarterback, Hurts knows that it is necessary to protect himself and continue to perform at a high level for his team. He has shown resilience and determination in overcoming challenges throughout his career, and he is expected to do the same as he faces the Commanders this weekend.

Eagles fans will be watching closely to see how Hurts performs with the knee brace and whether he can lead the team to another victory. With his talent and determination, there is no doubt that Hurts will give it his all on the field and do whatever it takes to help his team come out on top.
