  • Hannah Storm’s breast cancer diagnosis was a shock. Now the veteran sports journalist is helping others understand their risk.

As a trailblazer in the world of sports journalism, Hannah Storm has always known exactly what to say on camera. But when she received a breast cancer diagnosis in January 2024, the legendary journalist was lost for words.

“It really came as a shock,” Storm, 62, tells Yahoo Life. “It was something out of the blue.”

Storm was diagnosed with non-invasive ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS), a breast cancer in which cells that line the milk ducts of the breast become cancerous. Even though she had no symptoms or family history of breast cancer, Storm has always mindful about her health. She had more than 20 mammograms and ultrasounds over the years, and “absolutely nothing had come up.” But this time, her physicians detected a problem.

In the year since her diagnosis, Storm has channeled her experience into being an advocate for early detection, raising greater awareness of hereditary cancers and the crucial role of genetic testing. Here’s a look at the lessons Storm has learned on the cancer journey that transformed her life.

    Preventative screenings saved her life

“Had I not been really good about my yearly screening, I never would have known it was there,” Storm says.

At the beginning of 2024, Storm had a biopsy and received her official cancer diagnosis soon after. Storm turned to her friend, tennis legend Chris Evert, who battled ovarian cancer and underwent a preventative double mastectomy due to having the BRCA1 variant. Evert connected Storm to her doctor, Dr. Elisa Port, whom she called right away.

“She said, ‘You’re not going to die from this,’” Storm recalls. “And right away, I was like, ‘Wow, thank you.’ Just hearing those words was pretty powerful.”

Always one to establish a game plan, Storm wanted to know the next best steps to take, including undergoing a lumpectomy. When her physician broached the subject of genetic testing, Storm admitted she didn’t really know what that was. But when asked about her family history, she didn’t have many answers to provide besides her father’s death from cancer. She’s not alone: A survey conducted by Myriad Genetics in 2022 found that although half of women (51%) say they have no family history of breast or ovarian cancer, many are not sure if that’s true.

Storm says she “was just so blown away by the fact that it was just a simple blood test and all the incredible amount of information that resulted from that.”

    Know your risks

Early detection saved Storm’s life, and she’s hoping to empower others to practice that same diligence. Just a year after her own diagnosis, Storm has also teamed up with Myriad Genetics’s MyRisk with RiskScore hereditary cancer test to get educated on the importance of understanding your risk for hereditary cancers and how to get tested. The test evaluates 48 genes to help identify patients’ risk of developing 11 types of hereditary cancer.

While Storm understands that some people might be reluctant to learn about their risk, she views it as a way of taking control of one’s future. “I think people are like, ‘Well, I don’t want to know. It’s super scary,’” she says. “I look at it as, well, it’s super empowering.”

Those who find out that they’re at a heightened risk level shouldn’t panic, however. Instead, Storm says that’s the time to practice diligence.

“That gives you a game plan for you and your health care provider. You have the science there, you know what your risk level is,” she says. “Do you need to be hyper vigilant now? Even as a young person, do you need to undergo screening? Should you be having mammograms at a young age?”

Storm will pass what she learned on to her three daughters, who she says will be undergoing the Myriad test.

Treat your health appointments with urgency

Storm says it’s essential to stick to a rigorous preventative care schedule.

“One of the things I learned is how many people don’t prioritize themselves, especially women and their own health,” she says, noting that she treats her health appointments with the same urgency as business matters. “Moms are working, taking care of kids or taking care of their parents. We tend to take care of everybody else but put ourselves last.”

Storm says that it takes a “family effort,” and frequently tells the male athletes she works with to urge their wives and girlfriends to maintain their health appointments. “Whatever you have to do, just help her out,” she tells them. “Nobody is an island.”

A healthy diet and exercise regimen are also things that Storm focuses on. Always a fan of exercise, Storm relies on a daily weight-lifting routine, “which is really important for your bone health.” A hip replacement just a couple of months after her breast cancer surgery has required a lot of physical therapy, but Storm also enjoys cycling and walking.

Her cancer diagnosis also made her more aware of the danger of processed foods. However, she’s always been “pretty healthy. I try not to abuse my health all the time.”

    Advocate for yourself

Storm’s willingness to advocate for herself throughout her cancer journey is reflective of her experience navigating the world of sports journalism, which hasn’t always been hospitable to women.

“I took a lot of abuse,” Storm says of her early days in sports. “I definitely did the best I could at the time, but the one thing that I did not let it do was defeat me. I was like, ‘You are not going to run me out of this or turn me away from following my dreams. It’s not going to happen.’ I would never give somebody like that that kind of agency and power over my life.”

Though she’s faced a lot of obstacles in her ambition to make it in sports journalism, Storm is now grateful that she was able to “knock down some doors and smash some ceilings, and just provide a sort of a reference for women in terms of what the viable career options look like in sports.”

Storm won’t be in attendance at the Super Bowl this weekend. However, she will be enjoying the big game the way she always does: hosting a Super Bowl party at her home.

“I would like to see history,” she says. “So I think would be cool to see Kansas City three-peat!”

Hannah Storm’s breast cancer diagnosis was a shock. Now the veteran sports journalist is helping others understand their risk.

Hannah Storm, known for her work as a sports journalist and anchor for ESPN, was blindsided when she received a breast cancer diagnosis in 2008. The news was a shock to Storm, who had always been diligent about her health and never expected to face such a serious health issue.

But instead of letting the diagnosis defeat her, Storm decided to use her platform and experience to help educate others about breast cancer and the importance of early detection. She has been an advocate for breast cancer awareness, sharing her own story and encouraging women to be proactive about their health.

Storm’s message is clear: early detection can save lives. She knows firsthand the importance of regular screenings and being proactive about your health. By sharing her story, Storm hopes to inspire others to take charge of their own health and understand their risk for breast cancer.

In addition to raising awareness, Storm has also been involved in fundraising efforts for breast cancer research and support programs. She has used her platform to shine a light on the importance of funding research and supporting those affected by breast cancer.

Hannah Storm’s journey with breast cancer has been a challenging one, but she has emerged stronger and more determined than ever to make a difference. By sharing her story and advocating for early detection, Storm is helping others understand their risk and take control of their health. Her bravery and resilience serve as an inspiration to us all.

  • Major Stars to Unite for Historic Concert to Fight Breast Cancer

The stars will align on March 26, 2025, when a bevy of major artists come together for the “Band As One Nashville Concert for the Cure: Trisha Yearwood & Friends.” According to press materials released on January 23, Yearwood will bring together a star-studded roster of Nashville friends — including “American Idol” alum Lauren Alaina and former “Idol” judge Keith Urban — for a one-night-only concert at Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium.

Yearwood has been a vocal supporter of breast cancer research and awareness initiatives since her mother died from the disease in 2011. The “Band As One” concert will raise funds for Susan G. Komen, the world’s leading breast cancer organization, which said the event will be largest benefit concert in its history.

Stars Say They Can’t Wait for Inaugural Band As One Concert

In addition to Yearwood, Urban, and Alaina — who announced on January 22 that she’s expecting her first child — the concert lineup also includes country hitmakers Lainey Wilson, Terri Clark, and Anita Cochran as well as Amy Grant, Kristin Chenoweth, and Sheryl Crow, who went through breast cancer treatment in 2006.

Though he’s not scheduled to perform, 2024 “Idol” mentor Jon Bon Jovi’s new Nashville bar, JBJ’s, will be the presenting sponsor of the concert.

“I am excited to bring my friends together for a cause so close to my heart and to perform in support of the fight against breast cancer,” Yearwood said in a statement. “This disease impacts individuals and families worldwide, and I am honored to lend my voice to Band As One Nashville alongside so many incredible artists to help raise awareness and make a difference through the power of music.”

Some of the participating stars shared their excitement about the event on Instagram, including Cochran, who was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2018.

The singer wrote on a promo Yearwood posted, “Looking forward to a great night with friends! So honored to be a part of such a great cause!”

Clark, who lost her mom to breast cancer in 2005, shared the concert post in her Instagram Stories and wrote, “Honored to join this incredible lineup to support @susangkomen”

Researchers Say 1 in 8 U.S. Women Will Be Diagnosed With Breast Cancer in Their Lifetime

In a video promoting the Band As One concert, Yearwood said the concert “is to celebrate and to also honor everyone who’s gone through a breast cancer journey.”

According to The American Cancer Society (ACS), one in eight American women will be diagnosed with the disease in their lifetime. In 2025, the number of women who receive a breast cancer diagnosis is actually expected to increase, per the ACS, which estimates that “316,950 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in 2025, up from 310,720 in 2024.”

The number of breast cancer deaths among women is expected to decline slightly – from 42,250 in 2024 to 42,170 in 2025, but Susan G. Komen argues that further research must be funded to improve outcomes.

The organization’s mission statement says, “We stand firm in our promise to never give up on our vision of creating a world without breast cancer.”

Tickets to the Band As One Concert for the Cure in Nashville are available online for $100 – $300 per ticket.

I am thrilled to announce that some of the biggest names in the music industry are coming together for a historic concert to fight breast cancer. This star-studded event will feature performances by Taylor Swift, Beyoncé, Adele, Ed Sheeran, and many more.

Not only will this concert be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see some of the world’s most talented musicians on one stage, but it will also raise awareness and funds for breast cancer research and support for those affected by the disease.

Breast cancer is a cause that is near and dear to many of us, and I am so grateful to these major stars for using their platform to make a difference. Join us for this unforgettable evening of music and unity as we come together to fight breast cancer.

Stay tuned for more details on ticket sales and how you can support this important cause. Let’s make history together and show that when we unite, we can truly make a difference. #FightBreastCancer #MajorStarsConcert

  • Kirk Herbstreit, who couldn’t hold back his emotions after Ohio State win, reveals his wife was diagnosed with breast cancer

Kirk Herbstreit wasn’t able to hold back his emotions after Ohio State won the national championship on Monday night at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, with the longtime ESPN college football analyst brought to tears while he was live on the air.

A day later, Herbstreit revealed there was more happening in his life that previously had not been shared widely.

“I haven’t really talked about this publicly, but Alli, my wife, faced some stuff,” Herbstreit said to Pat McAfee on his ESPN show on Tuesday. “It’s been a tough year for me behind the scenes.

“My wife got diagnosed with breast cancer. You know, (my dog) Ben dies. It was just a lot of emotion. And when you do what we do, you endure. You do your job.

“And I think what happened, I couldn’t predict it, but when (the Buckeyes) won, I was so happy … because of what they faced and all the stuff behind the scenes. It was like almost, I don’t know, maybe a release of all that pent-up stuff, and it just got the best of me.

“I’m an emotional guy in general, and when things touch my heart, I’m not good at talking when that happens.”

Herbstreit played quarterback at Ohio State from 1989-1992. After the Buckeyes’ win Monday night in Atlanta, he embraced his son, Zak, an Ohio State tight end.

He called his on-camera emotional moment on ESPN “almost like a perfect storm.”

“My son had heart failure two years ago,” Herbstreit said to McAfee. “They were talking about a heart replacement there for a while, and he had to medically retire.

“And (head coach) Ryan Day – I think the gratitude I have for Ryan Day putting his arms around Zak and keeping him involved, you know, he’s almost like a GA with what he was doing. And Ryan insisted on putting his arms around him, (offensive coordinator) Chip Kelly, all these guys.

“So there was that side of it looking down and seeing him in his jersey after, you know, potentially facing replacing your heart to that.”

When ESPN anchor Scott Van Pelt, who was on the field at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, brought on Herbstreit and Chris Fowler, who were up in the broadcast booth, during the postgame show Monday, Herbstreit appeared to be trying to keep himself together.

“I’m a little emotional. I’m just fired up for these guys,” Herbstreit said. “You know, when I call these games, I’m incredibly objective. I love all these Ohio State teams. But this team, because what they went through, to get to this point, you’re just happy. You’re just happy for them.”

Herbstreit briefly went off camera and was back with a tissue. He dabbed at his eyes, visibly working to keep his composure.

“I talk to these players. I talk to these coaches. I know what they faced after that Michigan game. I know the pain, and I know that a lot of people thought, ‘To hell with this guy,’” Herbstreit said, referring to Day.

“I know what that did. That’s a real-life thing. To have to put that away … he just handled it, took the high road, didn’t say anything, went out and got his team ready to play four games, and they won it. And I think that’s why I’m emotional is what these guys faced.”

In a heartfelt moment after Ohio State’s thrilling victory, Kirk Herbstreit opened up about a personal battle he and his family are facing. The beloved college football analyst revealed that his wife was recently diagnosed with breast cancer, leaving him emotional and vulnerable in the wake of the win.

Herbstreit, known for his passionate commentary and unwavering support of Ohio State, couldn’t hold back his emotions as he shared the news with viewers and fans. The revelation added a poignant layer to an already emotional night, as he dedicated the win to his wife and asked for thoughts and prayers from the college football community.

‘I jumped off a bridge, too — and that’s when I ruptured my [breast] implants — off of that thing,’ Richards said.

She said that the harness she was wearing for the jump caused the rupture of both of her breast implants.

‘I still have to get them redone,’ she admitted. ‘I was supposed to a month ago but couldn’t because we were filming, so yeah, no, I still have to get them redone.’

Richards also said that her insurance won’t pay the bill. ‘I have to pay,’ she said.

‘My daughters were very upset,’ she told People. ‘They did not want me to do it. They were afraid I was going to get hurt or get killed, and they were actually really angry.

She added that she’s not athletic or particularly strong and she liked the idea of really challenging herself – even if it made her nervous.

‘I didn’t know who was going to be there, but I did hear there were some athletes, and I can’t compete with that.

She also revealed that she has yet to get her implants fixed.

“I was supposed to a month ago, but couldn’t because we were filming,” she explained. “So, yeah, no, I still have to get them redone.”

Richards, 53, confirmed she would be paying for the plastic surgery bill, adding, “I think we pretty much signed our life away doing that show… It’s dangerous.”

In 2011, she admitted she regretted getting her breasts augmented at age 19.

She revealed more than a decade ago that she regretted getting her chest done. PETE DADDS / FOX.

“I wish that I was confident enough with my body to not have had surgery,” she wrote in a candid essay. “That is something that I really want to encourage in my daughters, to embrace their healthy body and have confidence.”

Richards held her word, and in 2023, she confirmed she was trying to dissuade her daughter, Sami Sheen, from getting her breasts done at 19.

“I was made fun of as a teenager [because my boobs] were mosquito bites,” she told Bustle. “I got them done at the same age Sami is wanting to get them done.”

“I’m trying to talk her out of it because, and the reason why I’m getting them out, is I didn’t know how toxic [they are] when I was 19. And it’s not an easy surgery. It’s painful!”

Sheen, now 20, showed off her enhanced chest for the first time in December 2023 after going through with the augmentation.

It’s unclear if Richards ever had concrete plans to remove her implants or if she wants to in the future.

Considering she plans on getting them done again, it’s not likely a removal is in her near future.

Denise Richards recently revealed that she ‘ruptured’ her breast implants while filming her upcoming movie ‘Special Forces.’ The actress, known for her roles in films such as “Wild Things” and “Starship Troopers,” opened up about the incident in a recent interview.

Richards explained that during a particularly intense action scene, she felt a sharp pain in her chest and immediately knew something was wrong. She later discovered that her breast implants had ruptured, requiring her to undergo surgery to have them removed.

Despite the unexpected setback, Richards remained positive and focused on completing the film. She praised the cast and crew for their support during her recovery process and expressed gratitude for the experience of working on the project.

Fans of Denise Richards can look forward to seeing her in ‘Special Forces,’ where she plays a tough and resilient character who overcomes challenges both on and off the screen. Stay tuned for more updates on the film and Richards’ recovery journey.

Denise Richards made some serious sacrifices to survive on Special Forces.

The actress, 53, competed on season 3 of Special Forces: World’s Toughest Test, which premieres Jan. 8, and she’s revealing just how far she was willing to go in order to last on the Fox competition series.

“I jumped off a bridge, too — and that’s when I ruptured my [breast] implants — off of that thing,” Richards said during a joint interview with her husband Aaron Phypers on SiriusXM’s Jeff Lewis Live.

She said that the “harness” she was wearing for the jump was to blame for the rupture, which affected “both” of her breast implants, which she has yet to fix.

“I still have to get them redone,” she admitted. “I was supposed to a month ago but couldn’t because we were filming, so yeah, no, I still have to get them redone.”

Richards also said that her insurance won’t be fitting the bill for the operation and it will fall on her. “I have to pay,” she said. “I think we pretty much signed our life away doing that show… It’s dangerous.”

“Maybe we can work that in after the fact,” Phypers then said at the suggestion that the Fox series pay for the operation.

Richards will compete on season 3 of the series alongside stars including Trista Sutter, Stephen Baldwin, Brody Jenner, Christy Carlson Romano and Cam Newton. The survival series sees the celebrity recruits train in Wales, the home of British Special Forces Selection, and this season, they must endure the harsh reality of ocean warfare.

Among the challenges the group of 16 stars will face include: a high pressure hostage rescue, a treacherous ladder crossing between steep cliffs nearly 100-feet above the sea, a boat dunk drill where they will be submerged into the frigid ocean and a surf immersion where they will have to control their panic in an exercise that takes them to the brink of drowning, per a press release.

In an interview with PEOPLE, the mother of three admitted that her daughters Sami, 20, Lola, 19, and Eloise, 13 were “very upset” when they learned she’d joined the dangerous show.

“They did not want me to do it. They were afraid I was going to get hurt or get killed, and they were actually really angry,” she said. “It was the first time of all the times I’ve done different projects or traveled they were very upset with me.”

Richards chose to persevere, though, despite her daughters’ hesitance — and the fact that she’s, in her own words, “not athletic at all.”

“I thought, ‘This is the most challenging thing I’ll ever do, and why not do it?’ I was terrified, but once I made the commitment to do it, I was there,” she said.

Of her fellow competitors, she added, “I was so intimidated by everyone. I didn’t know who was going to be there, but I did hear there were some athletes, and I can’t compete with that. But that’s the greatest thing too, is it’s not about competing against anybody but myself, and that’s why they strip us down raw, physically and mentally and emotionally and all of that.”

Denise Richards recently revealed that she ‘ruptured’ both of her breast implants while filming her new action-packed series, Special Forces. The actress, known for her roles in films like Wild Things and TV shows like The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, opened up about the incident in a candid Instagram post.

In the post, Richards explained that she sustained the injuries while performing a particularly intense stunt on set. Despite the pain and discomfort, she continued filming and completed the scene like a true professional.

Fans and followers were quick to show their support for Richards, praising her dedication to her craft and her commitment to delivering a top-notch performance. Many also expressed concern for her well-being and wished her a speedy recovery.
