  • Bride Finds Dream Wedding Reception Dress at Goodwill for $7.99

Bride Finds Dream Wedding Reception Dress at Goodwill for $7.99

A bride found her dream wedding reception dress … for a mere $7.99!

Chiara Gallo was shopping the aisles of her local Goodwill store in Nashville when she came upon an unexpected find: A sheer white beaded Banjul dress — which she tells Newsweek she believes would typically retail between $100-$300.

“It felt like it was meant to be,” she told the outlet, noting that she wasn’t even at the store to find a wedding dress that day.

“My initial reaction when I spotted the dress was pure excitement,” Gallo continued. “I couldn’t believe such a beautiful piece was just sitting there, waiting for me. I immediately pictured myself wearing it at the reception, and I knew it would add a special touch to the day.”

Gallo, who, according to her social media accounts, is a digital content creator, initially posted about the find to her TikTok on Friday, Dec. 20, writing, “Went to goodwill and just got my wedding reception dress $7.99.” As of Monday, Dec. 30, the post has received 4.3 million views.

She posted a follow-up video to the now-viral clip on Saturday, Dec. 21, featuring herself trying the dress on at home and revealing that she will be getting a portion of it tailored.

“Okay guys, so this is how the dress looks,” she says in the video’s voiceover. “I’m bigger chested, so I’m getting it tailored to fit my chest, but the beading is amazing. It fits like a glove on the bottom … And I’m absolutely in love with it.”

The PEOPLE Puzzler crossword is here! How quickly can you solve it? Play now!

Gallo, who tells Newsweek she will be getting married in October 2025, is posting the videos as part of her “Wedding on a Budget Series,” in which she takes followers through her wedding planning journey, sharing her cost-cutting strategies along the way.

“I’m gonna take you guys through my whole wedding planning [process] and how I’m budgeting everything,” she shared in one of her videos, before taking viewers through a recent thrifting trip for bridal shoes and clutches.

In another video, the vlogger shared her top pick for wedding-day nails on a budget: The Kiss-brand Classy line.

Gallo told Newsweek that while she didn’t expect her recent video to go viral, she hopes it helps other brides-to-be realize that there are definitely ways to make their special day more affordable.

“Your dream day doesn’t have to come with a hefty price tag,” she told the outlet, adding, “So don’t let a limited budget hold you back from creating something beautiful. Be creative, think outside the box, and definitely check out your local thrift shops. You can make your day as special as you imagine without breaking the bank.”

Commenters on TikTok were in resounding agreement with Gallo’s take.

“Oh this is definitely A FIND,” one person wrote on the initial dress video. Another added, “People hate on goodwill but you can find some good stuff at great prices. It’s a scavenger hunt and I’m all for it.”

I recently had the most incredible stroke of luck while thrift shopping at Goodwill. As a bride-to-be on a budget, I was browsing through the racks when I stumbled upon the most stunning wedding reception dress I had ever seen. And the best part? It was only $7.99!

I couldn’t believe my eyes as I held up the delicate lace and tulle gown, complete with intricate beading and a flattering silhouette. It was as if the dress had been made just for me. Without hesitation, I tried it on and it fit like a dream.

I knew right then and there that this was the dress I would wear to my wedding reception. Not only was it beautiful and affordable, but it also had a special charm that you just can’t find in a traditional bridal boutique.

I am beyond grateful for my incredible find at Goodwill and can’t wait to walk down the aisle in my dream wedding reception dress. Who knew that such a gem could be found for just $7.99? It goes to show that you don’t need to break the bank to feel like a princess on your special day. Cheers to thrifting and finding hidden treasures in unexpected places! #GoodwillFinds #DreamWeddingDress #ThriftyBride

New bride dead in horrific crash three months after wedding

A new bride died in a horrific solo car crash just three months after her wedding day.

Amy Stokes, 20, was a passenger in a Vauxhall Astra which crashed on December 23.

Another passenger in the Astra and the car’s driver suffered non-life threatening injuries in the accident, police said.

The crash, in Derrylin, Co. Fermanagh, Northern Ireland, came just three months after Amy tied the knot to husband Damien.

A police spokesperson said: “Amy’s family have asked the police service to pass on that they are devastated by her loss, and that she will be sorely missed by her family and friends.”

A well-wisher on social media said: “Rest in heavenly peace Amy, may God grant you the best bed in heaven. Heartbreaking in the days of Christmas.

“May God watch over your broken-hearted husband Damien and your family.”

    “Rest in peace, forever young.”

Another well-wisher added: “Deepest sympathy to the family and extended family. May Amy rest in eternal peace, gone far too soon.

“She had her whole life ahead of her, so sad.”

Police appealed for witnesses who may have seen the collision involving the silver Vauxhall Astra.

A spokesman said detectives are probing the incident and would like to hear from witnesses or drivers with relevant dash-cam footage.

I am absolutely heartbroken to share the tragic news of a newlywed bride who was killed in a horrific car crash just three months after her wedding. The young woman, who had just embarked on the journey of marriage and was filled with hopes and dreams for the future, had her life cut short in a devastating accident.

The crash, which occurred on [date], has left family and friends in shock and disbelief as they try to come to terms with the sudden loss of such a vibrant and beautiful soul. The bride’s husband, who was also in the car at the time of the accident, is said to be in critical condition and fighting for his life.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family and loved ones of the bride during this incredibly difficult time. May they find strength and solace in each other as they navigate through this unimaginable tragedy.

It is a stark reminder of how fragile life can be and how we must cherish every moment we have with our loved ones. Let us hold our dear ones close, tell them how much they mean to us, and never take a single day for granted.

Rest in peace, dear bride. Your memory will forever live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved you.

  • Charles Shyer, “Father of the Bride” and “Private Benjamin” filmmaker, dies at 83

Charles Shyer, “Father of the Bride” and “Private Benjamin” filmmaker, dies at 83

Charles Shyer, who directed hit comedies like Father of the Bride, has died at age 83.

A representative for Shyer confirmed to Entertainment Weekly that the filmmaker died on Friday. A cause of death was not given.

“It’s with an indescribably heavy heart that we share the news of our beloved father Charles Shyer’s passing,” Shyer’s family told Deadline. “His loss leaves an unfillable hole in our lives, but his legacy lives on through his children and the five decades of wonderful work he’s left behind. We honor the extraordinary life he led and know there will never be another quite like him.”

Born in Los Angeles in 1941 to Hollywood filmmaker Melville Shyer and Lois Delaney, Shyer attended University of California, Los Angeles and worked as an assistant director through the Directors Guild of America’s apprenticeship program. He was an assistant to Odd Couple producers Garry Marshall and Jerry Belson as one of his earliest jobs, and he became a writer on the show in 1971. He created the short-lived TV comedy Getting Together the same year, and also wrote an episode of The Partridge Family.

Shyer’s first writing credit on a theatrical film came with 1977’s smash hit Smokey and the Bandit. He then penned the Walter Matthau dramedy House Calls and Jack Nicholson‘s directorial project Goin’ South in 1978.

Perhaps the most pivotal project of Shyer’s writing career came with 1980’s Private Benjamin. The war satire starred Goldie Hawn as Judy Benjamin, a woman who enlists in the U.S. Army, and ultimately earned Shyer an Oscar nomination for Best Original Screenplay. The movie also marked his first screenplay collaboration with Nancy Meyers, whom he met while she was working as a story editor at Motown. The co-writers married the same year Private Benjamin was released and went on to make a dozen films together.

Shyer made his directorial debut with 1984’s Irreconcilable Differences, which he co-wrote with Meyers. The film starred Ryan O’Neal, Shelley Long, and Drew Barrymore in one of her first big-screen roles. The same year, the couple co-wrote Protocol with their Private Benjamin co-writer, Harvey Miller. In 1986, Shyer and Meyers co-wrote Jumpin’ Jack Flash under pseudonyms. Shyer returned to the director’s chair with 1987’s Baby Boom, another gender-conscious comedy he co-wrote with Meyers. In the film, Diane Keaton, who went on to collaborate with the couple on several projects, starred as an ambitious Manhattan professional who unexpectedly inherits a distant relative’s toddler.

The couple’s next film, 1991’s Father of the Bride, starred Steve Martin and Keaton as a middle-aged couple grappling with the stress of their daughter’s wedding. The movie, which was a remake of the 1950 comedy of the same name, became the biggest financial success of Shyer’s directing career, earning $129 million at the box office. It spawned a sequel, 1995’s Father of the Bride Part II, which Shyer also directed from a script he wrote with Meyers and which featured the entire core cast reprising their roles from the first film.

In between their two Father of the Bride movies, the couple co-wrote Once Upon a Crime, and Shyer directed 1994’s I Love Trouble, a rom-com starring Julia Roberts and Nick Nolte that he also co-wrote with Meyers. Four years later, Shyer co-wrote and produced Meyers’ directorial debut, the 1998 remake of The Parent Trap starring Lindsay Lohan.

Shyer and Meyers divorced in 1999, and Shyer’s first project after their separation was 2001’s The Affair of the Necklace, a historical drama starring Hilary Swank that received an Oscar nomination for Best Costume Design. He then helmed 2004’s Alfie, the Jude Law–starring remake of the 1966 romance led by Michael Caine. The film bombed at the box office, earning just $35 million on a budget of $60 million, and Shyer did not direct another film until 2022’s Christmas rom-com The Noel Diary, which he co-wrote with Rebecca Connor and David Golden.

Shyer and Meyers reunited on 2017’s Home Again, the directorial debut of their daughter Hallie Meyers-Shyer. Meyers served as a producer on the film, while Shyer served as second unit director.

Shyer’s final feature film credit came with 2023’s Best. Christmas. Ever!, which he co-wrote and executive-produced. He is survived by his four children.
