Arctic front brings snow squalls to Maine; cold blast expected
An Arctic front sweeping through Maine and New Hampshire on Tuesday brings the potential for dangerous winter weather conditions, according to the National Weather Service in Gray.
Forecasters warn that wind gusts reaching 35 mph to 45 mph could create snow squalls and brief white-out conditions during the Tuesday morning commute. Temperatures will drop throughout the day, with wind chills falling into single digits by afternoon.
The winter weather continues into Wednesday as a clipper system moves through the region. The NWS predicts 2 to 4 inches of snow, with some locations possibly receiving up to 4 inches where heavier bands develop. Drivers should prepare for slick conditions during the Wednesday morning commute.
Thursday will remain cold and breezy, with high temperatures only reaching the teens and twenties south of the mountains. Wind chills could drop below zero during the morning hours before winds begin to slacken in the afternoon as high pressure builds in.

No. 13 A&M hoping recent purge brings surge against Oklahoma
Click HERE to view Texas A&M’s Monday press conference
Maybe a purge will bring a surge.
That’s what No. 13 Texas A&M (15-5, 4-3) hopes for on Tuesday night when the Aggies face Oklahoma (15-4, 2-4) in a vital Southeastern Conference basketball clash on Tuesday at 8 p.m. at Reed Arena.
The Maroon & White seek to cleanse away the stain of Saturday’s 70-69 loss to Texas. Nothing could do that faster than a bounce-back victory.
“I think one of the things we talked about yesterday when we were working is you have to purge in order to get to the next thing,” A&M coach Buzz Williams said on Monday. “You can’t live in the past, even if the result was bad.”
“I think one of the things we talked about yesterday when we were working is you have to purge in order to get to the next thing. You can’t live in the past, even if the result was bad.”
– A&M head coach Buzz Williams
It was bad. Horrific, actually. The Aggies could not protect a 22-point second-half lead. That’s the kind of devastating loss that can sidetrack a successful season.
Therefore, it’s extra important for the Aggies to rebound and get back on track.
“I told them yesterday: Are we going to lose Tuesday because we lost Saturday?” Williams said. “Or are we going to win Tuesday because of how we handled Saturday?”
Star senior guard Wade Taylor IV said the purge was completed even before the Aggies got back from Austin on Saturday night.
“I feel like we purged on the bus,” Taylor said.” You can’t harp on it too long because it will affect you for the next game. Ever since we’ve been talking about purging, we’ve been doing great.”
To Taylor’s point, the Aggies had to purge back-to-back losses with Alabama and Kentucky. They responded with consecutive victories over LSU and Ole Miss, in which they rallied from a double-digit deficit to prevail 63-62.
That Ole Miss game was one of two in SEC play in which the Aggies made furious rallies to pull out victories.
The other was against Oklahoma, 80-78, in which A&M rallied from an 18-point deficit.
The Aggies prevailed despite playing on the road without Taylor, who was injured. Also, OU guard Brycen Goodine came off the bench to hit nine times from 3-point range en route to a season-high 34-point outburst.
Sooners forward Jalon Moore, who averages 18 points, and guard Jeremiah Fears, who averages 16.7 points, obviously pose problems.
But the Aggies may be more focused on themselves. Williams said A&M must do a better job playing defense without fouling, getting defensive rebounds, finishing drives and converting free throws.
A&M has the SEC’s lowest free throw percentage at 67.4. The Aggies converted just three of eight free throw attempts in the loss to Texas.
“If you came to practice, you would not think we have the yips in a game,” Buzz Williams said of A&M’s problems at the foul line. “Then it becomes psychology. Do you talk about it? Should we have a prayer session? Should we anoint you with oil?
Zoe Kelton, TexAgs
Zhuric Phelps had a career-high 34 points, including a late 3-point dagger, vs. Oklahoma on January 8.
“Or, in our program, if you step to the line, be tough enough to shoot it and make it.”
Taylor’s presence should help with that. He’s converting 89.3 percent of his free throws. As a result, he’s averaging 14.7 points. Fellow guard Zhuric Phelps averages a team-high 15.1 points per game.
Taylor helps the defensive effort, too. His next steal will be the 200th of his career. He will be the fourth Aggie to reach that mark.
He’ll also be the first Aggie to score 1,400 points — already has 1,823 — and get 200 steals.
However, Taylor’s leadership and maturity could be greater assets than his point production or on-court thievery.
Statistics are fun, but A&M badly needs a victory to purge the contaminants of the Texas loss and avoid another setback.
“I think you have to have great value to each game,” Williams said. “So your response — even when it’s a positive one — you have to have the maturity to get to the next one.
“Even when the response from a bad one, the same maturity is required. You do want to bounce back. You want to see if you can flip it back. That’s why you always hear all those coaches say we just want to go 1-0 because you have to stay locked into what it is.”
The No. 13 Texas A&M Aggies are hoping that a recent purge of their roster will bring a surge in their upcoming battle against the Oklahoma Sooners. With key players being let go due to off-field issues, the Aggies are looking to rally together and prove that they can still compete at a high level. This game will be a test of their resilience and determination, and they are ready to show the college football world what they are made of. Stay tuned for what is sure to be an intense and exciting matchup between these two powerhouse teams. #GigEm #AggiesFootball #BeatOklahoma

California wildfires lose steam but rain brings different threats
Much-needed rain helped firefighters make gains on several blazes in Southern California on Monday as flooding shuttered schools, triggered landslides and prompted road closures.
Intermittent showers began sweeping over Southern California on Saturday and are slated to persist through Monday afternoon, bringing a welcomed break from relentlessly dry conditions but also a slew of new dangers, including the potential for toxic runoff in the fire-ravaged region.
Several landslides were reported Sunday in the Los Angeles area after some locations received around a half inch of rain, said the region’s National Weather Service field office. The same storm system that caused flooding began blanketing the mountains outside Los Angeles and across Southern California with snow, making travel “difficult to impossible” in some areas, the weather service said.
Flooding and landslides temporarily shut down sections of major roads, including portions of the Pacific Coast Highway and Sunset Boulevard, as dozens of bulldozers cleared debris. Rescue teams responded to several locations where motorists became stranded in their vehicles. Altadena, Los Angeles, Santa Clarita, Santa Monica and Woodland Hills are among the areas that have seen landslides or flooding since the start of the multiday rain event.
Officials opted to close Malibu-area schools on Monday, citing the weather and hazardous travel conditions. The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health also issued an advisory urging beachgoers to “avoid all water contact” because of “potentially high bacteria levels,” especially near areas where the wildfires torched homes and other structures.
Once the rain tapers off on Monday, a stretch of mild weather with cooler temperatures and low wind speeds is forecast for the rest of the week.

Wildfire containment: Here’s where the Southern California blazes stand
The latest containment and size totals of the wildfires in Southern California from the state’s firefighting agency:
Palisades Fire: 23,448 acres with 94% containment.
Eaton Fire: 14,021 acres with 98% containment.
Hughes Fire: 10,425 acres with 95% containment.
Border 2 Fire: 6,625 acres with 43% containment.
Rain aids firefighters battling blazes in Southern California
With help from the rain, containment has increased for the Palisades and Eaton fires as well as the Hughes Fire, north of Santa Clarita, and the Border Fire 2 in San Diego County.
“Significant rain showers throughout the day led to a reduction of fire activity,” read an incident update on the Border Fire, which has scorched over 6,600 acres. “With nearly a half inch of rain falling over the area, fire activity is now not expected to spread.”
An incident report on the Hughes Fire said “rain throughout the day aided in fire suppression efforts.” With containment at 95%, “firefighters and resources continued to demobilize,” according to Cal Fire.
LA law enforcement warns of landslides, ‘life-threatening situations’
The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department warned residents not to drive through floodwaters and urged them to monitor weather updates through Monday.
“Heavy rain is currently affecting our region, and we urge everyone ‒ especially those in recently burned areas ‒ to stay vigilant,” the sheriff’s office wrote on the social media platform X on Sunday.
Earlier, the agency issued a mud and rockslide warning: “Due to the recent wildfires and resulting burn scars, portions of Los Angeles County are at high risk for mud and rockslides. Heavy rainfall, which is forecasted for the area, may exacerbate these conditions, leading to potentially life-threatening situations.”
Winter storm warnings issued for mountains outside LA
The same storm system causing flooding in Southern California has brought several inches of snow to the region’s mountains, prompting several advisories and warnings of dangerous travel conditions as roads become icy.
The system is slated to move over the region through Tuesday before leaving a cold air mass in place over the coming days, which will keep overnight temperatures near freezing in some areas, according to the National Weather Service in Los Angeles.
The eastern San Gabriel Mountains in Los Angeles County could see up to 2 feet of snow and 35 mph winds, according to a winter storm warning in effect through Monday afternoon. Similar weather advisories were issued for the mountains in Riverside County and San Bernardino County.
As snow piled up and ice formed over roads, officials announced closures of mountain roads. Interstate 5, which runs the length of California, was closed between Bakersfield and Santa Clarita because of snow. The state’s Department of Public Transportation told motorists to use the 101 freeway.
Mild weather forecast for Southern California
A break from extreme weather is in store for Southern California as neither heavy rain nor strong winds are expected to return to the region over the next few days.
“There’s not a whole lot of signal in terms of strong winds,” said Bryan Lewis, a meteorologist with the weather service in Los Angeles. “Fire weather danger seems to be finally a little muted for a bit.”
In the Los Angeles-area, the rain that has triggered flooding and mudslides since the weekend mostly tapered off by Monday afternoon. Snowy conditions at high elevations are expected to continue into Tuesday as the cold storm system tracks more inland.
Lewis said meteorologists are tracking the possibility of a storm over the weekend, but early indications project it will stay north of Los Angeles County, Lewis said.
Schools close as long-awaited rain falls in Southern California
The Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District closed its schools in Malibu on Monday citing “dangerous road conditions and challenges with access to our schools.”
“We have been in communication with the City of Malibu, the Lost Hills Sheriff’s Captain, Supervisor Lindsay Horvath’s office and the Los Angeles County Public Works Department throughout the day,” the district said in an email to parents, according to KCAL News. “Based on their updates and warning regarding roads, and mudflow issues and continued rain, the decision was made to close schools tomorrow with the safety of students and staff as our top priority.”
Ahead of the rain, officials raced to protect against ‘toxic runoff’
Last week, Los Angeles area officials announced a slew of efforts to mitigate the potentially dangerous impacts of the rain, especially in vulnerable areas devastated by the Palisades and Eaton wildfires.
Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass issued an executive order to quicken cleanup efforts and prevent “toxic runoff” from flowing into waterways and the city’s stormwater system.
The order called for the installation of barriers, debris removal and the diversion of runoff from the city’s stormwater system to its sewer system, where the water can be treated.
The blazes “ripped through homes, vehicles, electronics, plastics, chemicals, furniture, and countless everyday materials, creating a dangerous mix of toxins,” Traci Parks, a Los Angeles council member, warned residents last week. “When it rains, they flow into our gutters, storm drains … eventually our beaches.”
How much rain has fallen in Southern California?
Below are preliminary, two-day rainfall totals in Southern California, according to the National Weather Service:
Pine Hills, San Diego County – 1.58 inches
Panorama Point, San Bernardino County – 1.46 inches
Sepulveda Canyon, Los Angeles County – 1.45 inches
Monte Nido, Los Angeles County – 1.10 inches
Poppet Flat, Riverside County – 1.06 inches

As the California wildfires finally begin to lose steam thanks to the tireless efforts of firefighters and favorable weather conditions, a new threat looms on the horizon – rain. While rain is typically seen as a welcome relief in fire-ravaged areas, it can bring its own set of challenges and dangers. The scorched earth left behind by the wildfires is now particularly vulnerable to mudslides and flash floods when heavy rains hit. The charred vegetation can no longer absorb water like it once could, leading to an increased risk of erosion and debris flows. Residents in affected areas are urged to stay vigilant and take necessary precautions to protect themselves and their property.
Furthermore, the combination of rain and ash can create toxic runoff that can contaminate water sources and pose health risks to both humans and wildlife. Authorities are working diligently to monitor water quality and provide guidance on how to safely navigate these post-fire conditions.
While the wildfires may be waning, the threat of rain-induced disasters underscores the ongoing challenges faced by communities in California. It serves as a stark reminder of the importance of preparedness and resilience in the face of natural disasters. As we continue to support those affected by the wildfires, let us also remain vigilant and adaptable in the face of this new threat.

She adds that the design process was “fun” especially because she’s “all for making or breaking the rules in fashion.”
On the collaboration Torstensson, who is also Frame’s creative director, adds in a statement: “Frame was conceived and launched in 2012 with one jean, the skinny de Jeanne, our take on the skinny jean in premium denim in classic blue. It became a best-seller globally, launched our wholesale business and was worn by all the supermodels off duty. To be able to create the comeback of the silhouette, with Alix Earle, the content creator of our generation, feels so right.”

Second-half collapse brings ugly loss vs. Kings – NBC Sports Bay Area & California
The Warriors no longer are the Sacramento Kings’ older brothers. It’s time to pass the torch, at least for the time being.
Following the Warriors’ 123-117 loss Wednesday night at Golden 1 Center, Golden State now has lost four consecutive regular-season games against Sacramento, and that of course doesn’t even include last season’s throttling in the NBA Play-In Tournament.
At halftime, the Warriors led by 17 points. Their biggest lead of the game was 18 points, which ties their biggest blown lead of the 2024-25 NBA season as the Warriors fell below .500 with a 21-22 record.
Steph Curry was held to only 14 points, but his season-high 12 assists gave him a double-double. Andrew Wiggins scored a team-high 25 points, and Buddy Hield was next in line with 17. Gui Santos scored a career-high 16 points in 23 minutes off the bench.
GUI FOR THE LEAD pic.twitter.com/V2q1IGyyZH
— Warriors on NBCS (@NBCSWarriors) January 23, 2025
These two teams couldn’t have contrasted more in style. The Warriors made 22 3-pointers, 11 more than the Kings, for a 33-point advantage. But the Kings made 21 more free throws than the Warriors and attempted 19 more than them. The Kings had 28 fastbreak points, and the Warriors didn’t score a single fastbreak point.
Far and away, the biggest problem was taking care of the ball. The Warriors were carefree and paid for it, handing the Kings 19 turnovers that resulted in 27 points.
Here are three takeaways from the Warriors’ second loss to their Northern California rivals this season.
Switching Schröder’s Role
Since being traded from the Brooklyn Nets to the Warriors, Dennis Schröder had played 17 games for his new team and had been in the starting lineup every game — until Wednesday night in Sacramento. Coach Steve Kerr made multiple changes to the short-handed Warriors starting lineup, and the biggest was sending Schröder to the bench.
Schroder wasn’t the first Warrior off the bench either. Moses Moody and Trayce Jackson-Davis already had taken their sweatpants off before Schröder and Lindy Waters III received their first minutes of the night.
The change didn’t matter. Schröder’s five turnovers topped all Warriors. He was a minus-5 in 21 minutes off the bench with seven points, three rebounds and five assists.
This isn’t a sample-size excuse anymore. The Warriors have a Schröder-sized issue on their hands that has to be addressed.
Second-Quarter Santos
The box score stats stood out enough. Watching Santos closely really shows where his impact is felt.
While the Warriors found their groove in the second quarter, outscoring the Kings by 13 points, Santos was a major reason why. Santos played nine minutes and 42 seconds in the second quarter and was plus-13 with 11 points, two rebounds and one assist. He went 4 of 6 from the field and 3 of 4 from 3-point range.
More like Three Santos pic.twitter.com/HosMD5trwS
— Warriors on NBCS (@NBCSWarriors) January 23, 2025
Hitting three 3-pointers always is an added bonus. But it’s Santos’ cutting which clears space for himself or teammates that is impossible to miss. Multiple Warriors did a great job of cutting in the second quarter, following Santos’ lead. It’s the top skill that Kerr always credits for why he’s comfortable playing Santos.
“I was trying to bring energy, both on defense and offense,” Santos told NBC Sports Bay Area at halftime. “I had a couple of wide-open shots and today I knocked them down
Unfortunately for the Warriors, any momentum that was made in the second quarter didn’t translate to the third.
12 Minutes of Disaster
Remember when the Warriors used to come out of halftime and close the doors on teams thanks to dominating the third quarter? That feels like years ago, maybe even decades ago. After playing 12 minutes of nearly perfect basketball, the Warriors stumbled, tumbled and fell flat on their faces in the third quarter.
Their 17-point halftime lead evaporated, being outscored 37-20. They were 8 of 20 from the field and 1 of 10 from 3-point range. The Warriors in the first half totaled seven turnovers. In the third quarter alone, they turned it over eight times – doubling their four assists for the frame.
Curry, Schröder and Gary Payton II each had two turnovers in the quarter, followed by one turnover from Santos and one from Hield. Almost all were inexcusable.
Whether it’s coming from Kerr or his players, the Warriors have reiterated time and time again that they’re not good enough to be this sloppy with the ball. Yet like clockwork, the Warriors play like the ball belongs to the other team.

LOS ANGELES — Celtics guard Jrue Holiday’s home in Ventura County has not been damaged by the Los Angeles wildfires, but returning here this week he has been met with startling reminders of how severely life has changed for so many.
When he went to drive to his home he found some of his usual routes blocked off because of the destruction from the fires. And as the Celtics eked out a 117-113 overtime win over the Clippers on Wednesday night, Holiday’s sister, Lo, was evacuated from her home in Santa Clarita because a new fire was raging across 1,000 acres.
Lo Holiday and the rest of their family here are safe, but the overall devastation has been crushing to Jrue, who was able to do very little while about 2,500 miles away in Boston. But this week he has helped organize meetings with families who lost everything.
Before the Clippers game, Holiday and several other Celtics met with three families with young children, and more are expected to attend Thursday’s game against the Lakers as guests of the Celtics.
“Obviously, LA is close to my heart,” Holiday told the Globe. “I still have a place out here, UCLA is right around the corner, and where I went to high school is right around the corner. So to see families just lose everything is hard. I still have family out here who are affected by the fires, so I think trying to bring light to a pretty dim situation is important.”
The families received care packages from the Celtics as well as other memorabilia. Al Horford signed an NBA Finals jersey for a child in one family, and Jaylen Brown autographed two of his All-Star jerseys for another. On Thursday night, Jayson Tatum is planning to meet with a family from his hometown of St. Louis that was previously homeless and received permanent housing in Los Angeles just before being evacuated because of the fires.
Holiday is hopeful that the gifts and interactions will provide some comfort for these families during a dark time, but he and his wife Lauren are exploring ways to do even more through their foundation and their JLH Social Impact Fund. They have put a resource page up on the foundation’s website and are already working with grantees involved in providing relief services.
“I think for me and my wife, just trying to brainstorm to see what we can do to bring people comfort or things they may need at the moment,” Holiday said. “It’s just hard to imagine what happens to them long term. They have young kids who are probably in school somewhere and have to figure out their life now, which is pretty difficult. I feel blessed to be able to help any way I can.”

In the wake of devastating wildfires that have ravaged communities across the country, NBA star Jrue Holiday has stepped up to offer support and solace to those affected.Holiday, who plays for the Milwaukee Bucks, recently donated $1 million to help those impacted by the fires, including providing essential supplies, shelter, and resources to those in need. Additionally, he has been actively involved in relief efforts, volunteering his time and resources to help with recovery and rebuilding efforts.
In a statement, Holiday expressed his deep concern for those who have lost their homes and livelihoods in the fires, and his commitment to doing everything he can to help them through this difficult time. His generosity and compassion have brought hope and comfort to many of those who have been affected by the fires, and his actions serve as a powerful reminder of the importance of coming together to support one another in times of crisis.
As communities continue to grapple with the aftermath of the fires, Holiday’s contributions serve as a beacon of light and hope, showing that even in the face of tragedy, there are always those willing to lend a helping hand and make a difference.

X Games brings all hands on deck as guests swarm to Aspen
Fans wait for riders to drop in during the women’s snowboard superpipe final of X Games Aspen on Jan. 26, 2024, at Buttermilk Ski Area.
Austin Colbert/The Aspen TimesWith X Games coming to Aspen this weekend, police, businesses, and hotels have their work cut out for them.
The events, running Thursday through Saturday, will bring an influx of sponsors, spectators, and athletes, requiring city and county police to show out in numbers. The Pitkin County Sheriff’s Office, in particular, will see its biggest night of the year as the events are under their jurisdiction, according to Pitkin County Chief Deputy of Operations Parker Lathrop.
But Lathrop expects they will manage the challenge.
“We have those moments of excitement. But overall, when it comes to the event itself, we’ve been very fortunate. I think most people come to enjoy (it),” he said. “Obviously, there’re always the outliers, but overall, it’s been a very positive experience for us. For the public, as well.”
The venue recorded nearly 16,000 attendants who scanned into the event last year on Saturday and Sunday, according Pitkin County Sheriff’s Office data.
During the three-day event last year, they recorded over 22,000 vehicles traveling upvalley on Colorado Highway 82. The county made 185 traffic stops outside of the event and on Highway 82 in either direction of Buttermilk, issuing 11 tickets, and arresting seven people.
Lathrop said they generally see an increase in minors illegally consuming alcohol on X Games weekend.
Local bars and restaurants will also see an uptick in business.
Zane’s Tavern Server and Bartender Libby Smith said she’s getting out of town before the people begin pouring in.
“I’m leaving the valley. I’m going to see Billy Strings in Denver,” she said, adding, “People don’t know how to act; they come here, and they treat it like a playground. It’s a bunch of kids, and they don’t tip, and they aren’t polite.”
She said, however, the influx of people is good for the local economy.
“But for the restaurant industry, our sanity, it’s not good,” she said.
Hotels will fill with sponsors, attendees, and leisure travelers, attracting a solid customer base when domestic skiers aren’t normally traveling, said Eliza Voss, Aspen Chamber Vice President of Destination Marketing.
As of Dec. 31, 80-85% of hotel space in Aspen was already booked for the X Games dates.
With the influx of people to the events, traffic is directed to park at the Brush Creek Park and Ride lot because there is no event parking on-site, according to Lathrop. But the 400 paved parking spaces of the lot filled by noon on Saturday of last year’s X Games, according to Sheriff’s Office records. Once full, drivers may park in Aspen or Snowmass and bus to the event.
This is the second year X Games has started to charge general admission tickets, a policy spearheaded by X Games, not Aspen Skiing Company, according to SkiCo. Spectators could attend the competitions for free in the past.
But SkiCo will offer 500 free tickets to local highschoolers at the venue each day of the event on a first come, first served basis.
Friday and Saturday general admissions tickets are sold out. Thursday general admission tickets can be purchased for $58 on the X Games website.
Though he doesn’t know how attendance will change with the recent change in ticket policy, Lathrop said charging admission for the events could improve attendees’ behavior.
“Usually, when someone’s paying to attend something, they want to remember it,” he said. “They want to enjoy (it).”
