Charli xcx leads male-dominated Brit awards nominations – with first Beatles nod since 1977 | Brit awards
Charli xcx leads this year’s Brit awards with five nominations for her 2024-dominating record Brat – the Guardian’s album of last year. With four nominations apiece, Dua Lipa, the Last Dinner Party, Ezra Collective and Myles Smith are close on the pop star’s trail.
xcx is nominated for album, artist and song of the year – the latter for the remix of Guess featuring Billie Eilish – and in the dance and pop genre categories.
But despite xcx painting the British music industry’s annual party a violent shade of lime green, women remain underrepresented in this year’s nominations, accounting for 34.7% of the 98 slots. Male acts comprise more than half, at 53%, with mixed-gender acts and collaborations – including the Last Dinner Party – making up the remaining 12.3%.
It’s a noteworthy year for some vintage groups: the Beatles’ AI-abetted Now and Then is up for best song, the group’s first nomination since the very first Brit awards in 1977. (Prior to becoming an annual fixture in 1983, the first Brits marked Queen Elizabeth II’s silver jubilee and 100 years since the invention of the phonograph, and honoured the preceding 25 years in music, seeing the Beatles earn three nominations.) And with three nominations for Songs of a Lost World – their first album since 2008 – the Cure score their first Brit nominations in more than 30 years in the categories for album of the year, group of the year and alt/rock act.
At the newer end of the scale, Stargazing singer Smith is this year’s Rising Star winner, tipped by the industry for major success, and is also nominated for new artist, song and pop act.
Ezra Collective: God Gave Me Feet for Dancing – video The genre categories are assembled by the Brits voting academy and then voted for by members of the public via WhatsApp. Predictably, the category for hip-hop/grime/rap act features just one woman, Little Simz, alongside Central Cee, Dave, Ghetts and Stormzy.
London jazz act Ezra Collective may also be set for a breakthrough year. The five-piece released their third album, Dance, No One’s Watching, in September, after winning the 2023 Mercury prize for their second album. “From a youth club to the Brit awards and beyond,” they said in a statement.
Some may raise eyebrows at a group active since 2016 being up for new artist – alongside last year’s Mercury winners English Teacher, the Last Dinner Party, Myles Smith and former Brit School student Rachel Chinouriri – but the category parameters stipulate that acts must have had one Top 40 album or single in the eligibility period, but can’t have had a Top 10 album or more than one Top 10 single, nor have had prior nominations for best artist, group or album.
Despite middling reviews for her third album Radical Optimism – which spent just 19 weeks in the UK Top 100, compared to 220 for her 2020 record Future Nostalgia – Lipa is nominated for album of the year, artist of the year, song of the year (for Training Season) and pop act.
Last year’s major winner, Raye – who took home six prizes in 2024 – is up for R&B act. “I’m still processing the ridiculousness that was last year!” she said in a statement. “I’m excited to watch Charli xcx clean up this year, she just deserves it so much.”
Some nascent comebacks also feature: Sam Fender is up for artist of the year and alt/rock act, despite only having released two singles from his forthcoming third album, People Watching, due in February; and Jade, of the on-hiatus band Little Mix, is up for song of the year (for Angel of My Dreams) and pop act.
In the international categories, Taylor Swift, Chappell Roan, Sabrina Carpenter and Billie Eilish have two nods apiece; Eilish also clocks a third nomination alongside xcx in the song category.
“Thank you so much for the nominations and the recognition of my art,” Roan said in a statement. “The UK has always shown me so much love and championed me through these past few years. It was one of the first places that Good Luck, Babe! blew up in, so this feels extra special.”
The awards for producer and songwriter of the year will be announced prior to the ceremony, which takes place on 1 March at the O2 Arena in London. Returning for the first time since 2021, Jack Whitehall reclaims hosting duties. No performers have yet been announced for the night.

Emma Raducanu: Brit relishing Iga Swiatek clash at Australian Open | Tennis News
Emma Raducanu believes she has “nothing to lose” as she prepares for a clash against former world No 1 Iga Swiatek in the third round of the Australian Open.
Raducanu overcame back issues to defeat big-hitting Amanda Anisimova 6-3 7-5 and reach the last 32 for the first time in Melbourne.
The 22-year-old is back in the third round of a hard court Grand Slam for the first time since winning the US Open in 2021.
“I’m loving it. It’s another opportunity to test my game,” Raducanu said ahead of her clash with world No 2 Swiatek on Saturday.
“I think obviously she’s [Swiatek] achieved so much already and I think going into it, I have nothing to lose. I’m just going to swing. I’m going to give it my best and I can’t wait to play in front of you guys.
“She is a top player, she’s been really consistent over the last quite a few years. So it’s going to be a match for me where I feel like I don’t really have much expectation externally.
“I think you always have the pressure that you put on yourself to perform to your best ability, which is not really going to change, but that’s every match.
“I’m looking forward to going out there and testing my game against the best, because, ultimately, you play tennis and you live for these matches. It’s going to be a great buzz of adrenaline.”
Raducanu stressed she would taking a relaxed approach to preparations for her meeting with the Pole, who wasted little time in beating Slovak Rebecca Sramkova 6-0 6-2 on Thursday.
Swiatek will be the highest-ranked player Raducanu has ever faced at a Grand Slam, and she is yet to win a set in three meetings with her.
“I think I’ll probably just take it easy [on Friday],” she said. “I’ll probably have a light hit. Nothing crazy.
“I’ve played a lot of tennis today and two days ago, so I don’t think I need to overdo it on the practice court. Just to keep the body ticking over a little bit and just recover really.”
Swiatek sits 59 places above Raducanu in the world rankings but said: “There’s no point to look at rankings, especially when you have these great players that already have been through great tournaments and won some tournaments.
“You know that they can play well.”

Jack Draper next match: Date, time and how to watch Australian Open third round tie as Brit faces another home favourite
Jack Draper is the undisputed British number one, and he’s one of the top seeds for the 2025 Australian Open.
The 23-year-old made great progress at the US Open last year, reaching the semi-finals before losing in straight sets to eventual champion Jannik Sinner.
Draper couldn’t quite make his first Grand Slam finalCredit: Getty It was an agonising end for Draper, but he still made huge steps in his young career throughout 2024.
This sets him up for a big year, starting with the Australian Open.
There were some doubts over if he would be fit, but he’s up and running in Melbourne.
Jack Draper at 2025 Australian Open: Ranking
As it stands, Draper is currently ranked as the 18th-best men’s singles player in the world.
This sees him above the likes of Ben Shelton and Arthur Fils, while he is comfortably the British number one.
His nearest challenger is Cameron Norrie who is down in 52nd.
This means Draper is seeded for the Australian Open, along with Carlos Alcaraz, Novak Djokovic and Sinner.

Draper is the 15th seed but has needed five sets to see off his opponents in the first two rounds.
First, he beat Argentina’s Mariano Navone, who is the world No.47 and was making his Australian Open debut, 4-6, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2.
And in the second round he beat Australian home favourite and world No.71 Thanasi Kokkinakis 6-7, 6-3, 3-6, 7-5, 6-3.
Draper will now take on another Aussie in the form of Aleksandar Vukic who is ranked 68 in the world.
That match will be held on Friday at the Margaret Court Arena and play is expected to begin at 9:30am UK time.
Should Draper win, he will face four-time Grand Slam champion Carlos Alcaraz in the fourth round.
Alcaraz beat Nuno Borges in four sets to make it through.

Draper conjured the spirit of Andy Murray to claw his way back from the brink of defeat against Kokkinakis.
Two years ago, Murray famously recovered from two sets and a break down against Kokkinakis to win a second-round match that finished at 4.05am.
Asked by John McEnroe in his on-court interview how he had pulled off the comeback, Draper said: “I don’t know, it was a really tough match. Thanasi is an unbelievable player, someone I have great respect for.
“I’m really proud of the way I competed today and I eventually came through. I’m very happy about that.
“I’m getting better each set and I’m really proud of the way I’m going about my tennis.
“I didn’t know if I was going to be fit to come here. I know that my tennis is improving, this match would have really helped me again.
“My first match was four hours and I don’t want to be out here for that long.
“But I’m getting better with each set and I’m really proud with the way I’m going about my tennis.”

Jacob Fearnley shares Kyrgios fan interaction story as Brit opens up on whirlwind Aus Open | Tennis | Sport
Jacob Fearnley has gone from college tennis to getting asked for selfies at the Australian Open in the last whirlwind 12 months.
And Jack Draper has predicted his fellow 23-year-old will soon be competing with the US Open semi-finalist for the British No.1 spot before both play in the third round here.
Draper will take on Aussie Aleksandar Vukic in another Ashes Battle on Friday night. And British No.3 Fearnley, who showed great composure to beat Nick Kyrgios in the first round, will now take on world No.2 Alexander Zverev.
The Scot only left the Texas Christian University last summer and shot up the rankings by winning four Challenger events to qualify for his first overseas Grand Slam.
And the world No.86, who watched last year’s Australian Open at college in Texas, said it is “cool” to be recognised at his first overseas Grand Slam.
“I had one person who was getting in the car, and he sprinted over from the other end of the street,” Fearnley laughed. “He was like: ‘Are you the guy that played Nick? and I was like, ‘Yeah, take a selfie’.
“But other than that, I don’t get recognised at all. I think that I probably get recognised here, because obviously I played Nick so probably a lot of people were tuning in for that match. But other than that, no, I quite like it for now. It’s nice to stay grounded, and just kind of do my own thing. But it’s also cool to be recognised, especially children and kids, and they’re like, ‘I’m your biggest fan’. It’s really cool.”
Fearnley, who is accompanied here by his American girlfriend Keagan Polk, will take on 2020 Olympic champion Zverev in the second match in the Margaret Court Arena on Friday.
“It’s another massive match,” said the Hibs fan. “He’s playing unbelievable. I’m aware that all these matches that I’m getting are extremely challenging.
“I do get nervous, but I know how lucky I am to have these experiences and play these matches. These matches don’t come around often. I’m trying to cherish them and stay in the present moment really and just try and enjoy these massive matches because they are some of the biggest that I can play.”
It is very different from the start of his career when he first encountered No.15 seed Draper. “I think we were around about 10 maybe. I remember we played for the first time green clay in a bubble kind of in Gosling. Maybe it was green ball, or maybe it was just transitioning into yellow ball. I remember that match, actually. I think I won!
“We travelled a lot, and we did play some cool matches, under 12, under 14, and then kind of got a little bit — he kind of went, like, way higher than me. I went the college path. He kind of shot up, and then I went a different direction. Everyone knew he was an insane talent. I don’t think it comes as any surprise to anyone how well he’s doing, for sure. We’ve definitely reconnected in the past even six months or so.”
Draper, the son of former LTA chief executive Roger, said: “I’m proud of Jacob. He’s an incredible player. I don’t know if you looked at our sort of LTA, how many times we’ve played each other. It must be 30 times when we were younger. He would be like my arch rival when we were younger.
“Obviously we went down different paths. He went to university and sort of did his thing there, but he’s always been a special talent. He’s not going to stop just top 100 or top 50. He’s going to be right at the top of the game. I think that’s a really good, healthy relationship for myself.
“Obviously I’m good friends with him, but we’re going to be competing against each other obviously with sort of that No. 1 Brit situation. I think it’s great for British tennis. Obviously Cam is still around, Dan, and other players too. I think it’s an amazing addition to British tennis, and lucky to have him back.”
Jacob Fearnley, a tennis fan from the UK, recently had a memorable interaction with Nick Kyrgios during the Australian Open. Fearnley shared his experience on social media, detailing how the Australian player took the time to chat with him and even signed a tennis ball for him.In his post, Fearnley expressed his admiration for Kyrgios’ talent on the court but also noted the warmth and friendliness the player showed towards his fans. The Brit described the encounter as a highlight of his trip to the tournament, and thanked Kyrgios for making it such a special experience.
Fearnley’s story is just one example of the many fan interactions that make the Australian Open a unique and exciting event for tennis enthusiasts. As the tournament continues to captivate audiences around the world, players like Kyrgios are not only showcasing their skills on the court but also connecting with fans in a meaningful way.
As the whirlwind of the Australian Open unfolds, it’s heartwarming to hear stories like Fearnley’s that highlight the positive impact of sports and the connections it can create between players and fans. Here’s to more memorable moments and fan interactions as the tournament progresses.

Harriet Dart was ‘dead already’ as Brit reacts to Australian Open win after late call-up | Tennis | Sport
Lucky loser Harriet Dart claimed she was “dangerous” because she was “dead already” after fighting off injury and cramp to win her first main draw match at the Australian Open for five years.
The British No.4 lost in the final round of qualifying but was handed a late place after play had already started at 11am here when former Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova withdrew.
Dart got her left calf strapped in the second set during a medical timeout and held back tears as she cramped up in the match tiebreak against Croatian Jana Fett.
But the Londoner, who saved two match points in the final set, fought back to win 7-5 2-6 7-6 for only her second main draw win here. She will now face Wimbledon semi-finalist Donna Vekic.
“When you get a chance, you really want to take it, and I was just really happy to get over the line today,” Dart said.
“I think whether I’m a lucky loser or play one, you know they’re dangerous, because you were kind of dead already, you get a bit of a chance and try and use it to your advantage.
“All these players play great. No one’s going to give any matches to you. You’ve got to work very hard to get through the line, and that was very much the case today. I thought it was a really good match. It was pretty hot out there, and I took my chances when I had them. I was just, really pleased to be able to fight through that.”
Dart spent all day on site on Sunday and was in the locker room when she got the late call to play. “I was just chilling,” she said. “I had already practiced, so I knew there was potentially one. You see how a couple people are, and you kind of have the eye on certain things. Until someone actually withdraws, it’s pretty difficult to be in the zone
“The first match was already on when I was told, so the notice was not that long, but because it was a men’s match gives you a little bit more time.”
And the Arsenal fan blamed her unusual preparation for her physical problems on a warm, windy day in the Victorian capital.
And there were 19 breaks of serve and 42 break points in the match which lasted three hours and 14 minutes. “I’m not sure what I have done to the calf but something. I was just cramping, I think, just fatigue and combination of things. Yesterday I was here from 9:30 in the morning till half 9:00 at night. It was a long day. It’s tiring. You don’t really do that much, but somehow you’re tired.”
Dart beat No.18 seed Vekic in their only previous meeting at Nottingham in 2022 – and she will be better prepared to face this Croatian.
“I watched my doubles partner (Diane Parry) play her yesterday so I watched the whole match. That’s quite funny. She’s a great player, had an amazing year last year. She’s a ball striker, and I look forward to it.’
Harriet Dart was ‘dead already’ as Brit reacts to Australian Open win after late call-upBritish tennis player Harriet Dart shocked the world with her impressive performance at the Australian Open, despite being a last-minute addition to the tournament. Dart, who was initially not even supposed to compete in the event, received a wild card entry after a series of withdrawals.
In what can only be described as a Cinderella story, Dart defeated several top-ranked players on her way to the fourth round of the tournament. However, it was her reaction to her unexpected success that truly captured the hearts of fans.
“I was ‘dead already’ before the tournament even started,” Dart said in a post-match interview. “But I just kept fighting and believing in myself, and it paid off in the end.”
Dart’s incredible run at the Australian Open has inspired many aspiring tennis players and fans alike, proving that with determination and hard work, anything is possible. Her never-say-die attitude and unwavering belief in herself serve as a reminder that success can come from the most unexpected places.
As Dart continues to make waves in the tennis world, her story serves as a reminder to always chase your dreams, no matter how impossible they may seem. Congratulations to Harriet Dart on her incredible achievement at the Australian Open.
