  • Solar photovoltaic system will save New Britain printing company $1.2 million

Hitchcock Printing & Distribution Services is implementing the technology to help reduce its energy costs.

NEW BRITAIN, Conn. — Hitchcock Printing & Distribution Services is implementing a solar photovoltaic system at its location on John Downey Drive in New Britain.

The state-of-the-art technology will absorb sunlight and convert it into direct current electricity, which will save the historic business around $1.2 million in energy costs over the next two decades.

The Connecticut Green Bank announced on Thursday the closing of Commercial Property Assessed Clean Energy financing, or C-PACE, for the technology to be installed at the 21,000-square-foot facility. Founded by Edwin Rogers Hitchcock in 1904, the company specializes in printing, creative design, finishing and mailing services.

“The addition of our solar system is a key to staying competitive now and in the future,” said Anthony Bracco, president of Hitchcock Printing. “State-of-the-art equipment and a highly trained youthful workforce accompanied with a plan to manage our energy costs will ensure that we have an edge in the years to come.”

The Connecticut Green Bank, a Hartford-based operation that accelerates the green economy by using limited public funds to attract private capital investment, reports that the solar photovoltaic system was developed and installed by Smart Roofs Solar Inc. in Monroe.

C-PACE financing has helped building owners complete more than 400 projects since 2013, leading to an estimated energy savings of close to $420 million. C-PACE financing also enables commercial property owners to install green energy upgrades and pay for them over time, covering up to all the costs at low-interest rates with terms up to 25 years.

Mackey Dykes, vice president of Financing Programs at the Connecticut Green Bank, said that interest is growing in C-PACE financing from energy-intensive businesses that are looking to lessen their energy costs, especially through the addition of solar.

“It’s exciting when companies with long histories in their community, like Hitchcock Printing, take advantage of green technologies to enhance their bottom line,” Dykes said.

In an effort to reduce energy costs and increase sustainability, a printing company in New Britain has recently installed a solar photovoltaic system on their premises. The system is projected to save the company an estimated $1.2 million over the next 25 years.

By harnessing the power of the sun to generate electricity, the printing company is not only cutting their energy bills, but also reducing their carbon footprint. The solar panels will provide a reliable source of clean energy, allowing the company to operate more efficiently and responsibly.

This investment in solar technology showcases the company’s commitment to environmental stewardship and financial savings. With the projected cost savings of $1.2 million, the printing company is setting a positive example for other businesses in the area to follow suit and embrace renewable energy solutions.

Katie Boulter was forced to save more than one break point but she held serve in the eighth game to level the third set at 4-4 against Iga Świątek.

Meanwhile, Świątek called for the physio and has left the court for a medical timeout.

What effect the pause in the proceedings has on Boulter — who has the momentum in the third set — remains to be seen.

    Interesting question

Weird question, but is it possible that Djokovic has played more minutes of professional competitive tennis than any other person?

I wonder whether anyone has gotten deep enough into tournaments across a long enough span to challenge him on this?

Obvious competitors are the other big two and maybe people during the pre-tie break era? Although if you go back that far the professional element is complex. I have no idea how to find this out.

    – Llywellyn

    Thanks for your query Llywellyn.

We’ve tried to locate the stats but have drawn a blank so far.

If Djokovic hasn’t played the most minutes, he would surely be a podium contender.

Brisbane International: Sabalenka broken by Putintseva

The door may have opened for Yulia Putintseva in the first set against world number one Aryna Sabalenka.

Hailey Baptiste is the latest to reach the last eight following her 5-7, 7-5, 7-6 (8/6) win over Briton Jodie Burrage after almost three hours on court.

The task won’t be easy for Baptiste in the quarters, however, as her opponent is former world number one Naomi Osaka.

Osaka has been in solid form this week, having not dropped a set in the tournament.

The 1980s were a transformative decade for technology, especially in Britain. During this time, computers went from being niche machines used by hobbyists and academics to becoming a mainstream part of everyday life. This shift was largely driven by the rise of personal computers and the growing popularity of video games, which captured the imagination of a generation.

One of the key factors in this transformation was the government-backed BBC Micro project, which aimed to introduce computing into schools across the country. The BBC Micro was a groundbreaking machine that was affordable, versatile, and easy to use, making it the perfect tool for introducing a new generation to the world of computing.

At the same time, the video game industry was booming, with iconic British companies like Sinclair Research and Acorn Computers leading the way. Games like Manic Miner, Elite, and Jet Set Willy became instant classics, captivating players with their innovative gameplay and cutting-edge graphics.

As more and more people began to embrace computers, a vibrant hacker and demo scene emerged, pushing the boundaries of what was possible with technology. This DIY ethos laid the groundwork for the digital revolution that would follow in the decades to come.

Today, the legacy of the 1980s computer revolution can be seen in every aspect of our lives, from the smartphones in our pockets to the algorithms that power our social media feeds. The love affair that 1980s Britain had with the computer paved the way for a future where technology is an integral part of our daily existence.
