Broadway biopic and film with Jessica Chastain among Berlinale highlights | Berlin film festival
Richard Linklater’s long-awaited Broadway biopic Blue Moon starring Ethan Hawke and Margaret Qualley, a Mexican love story with Jessica Chastain as a socialite who falls for a émigré ballet dancer, and a British family drama set in Spain featuring Emma Mackey and Fiona Shaw will premiere in competition at next month’s Berlin film festival.
The 75th edition of the Berlinale, Europe’s first major cinema showcase of the year, will open on 13 February with the world premiere of The Light by Tom Tykwer (Run Lola Run) about the intertwined fates of a Syrian refugee and a middle-class German family.
The British actor Tilda Swinton will pick up an honorary Golden Bear at the opening ceremony for lifetime achievement.
The event’s new director, Tricia Tuttle, an American film journalist and curator who previously ran the BFI London film festival, unveiled the 19 contenders vying for the prestigious Golden and Silver Bear top prizes, to be chosen by a jury led by the US director Todd Haynes.
At a news conference in the German capital, Tuttle said that beyond Berlin’s trademark political fare, there would be “love stories and comedies and offerings of hope and magic and wonder” in the programme of the 11-day event.

Jessica Chastain in Dreams. Photograph: Teorema Chastain turns in what organisers called a “blistering” performance as a lovestruck socialite navigating the immigration divide in Michel Franco’s Dreams, their second collaboration after Memory.
Mackey (Sex Education) joins Vicky Krieps and Shaw in an adaptation of Deborah Levy’s acclaimed novel Hot Milk about a mother and daughter grappling with their fragile bond in a holiday beach house.

The French Oscar winner Marion Cotillard leads Lucile Hadžihalilović’s film-within-a-film The Ice Tower featuring cinema shock master Gaspar Noé playing a director.
Vivian Qu’s Girls on Wire promises to pick up the tradition of Hong Kong action blockbusters with a twist in the tale of a single mother who kills a drug dealer.
Gabriel Mascaro’s The Blue Trail, a thriller set in the near future about elderly Brazilians forced to move to resettlement camps, tells the story of a 77-year-old woman who breaks out and embarks on an adventure in the Amazon.
Ukrainian documentary Timestamp by Kateryna Gornostai offers a searing look at how schools are still functioning in wartime.
Mary Bronstein’s If I Had Legs I’d Kick You features a “ferocious” performance by Rose Byrne as a mother whose child is afflicted with a mysterious illness.
Berlinale fixture Hong Sang-soo of South Korea will unveil What Does That Nature Say To You about a poet getting to know his girlfriend’s family.
Tilda Swinton: set for an honorary Golden Bear. Photograph: Image Press Agency/NurPhoto/Rex/Shutterstock The German veteran actor Hanna Schygulla stars in Yunan by the Ukrainian-Syrian director Ameer Fakher Eldin, playing a woman offering solace to a refugee on a remote island.
In the Berlinale Special section outside the main competition, the American director Julia Loktev will show the first part of her five-hour documentary My Undesirable Friends about Russian independent journalists forced into exile after the Ukraine invasion.
Organisers had previously announced that Mickey 17, a sci-fi feature starring Robert Pattinson from Parasite director Bong Joon-ho, would screen out of competition.
And Tom Shoval will premiere A Letter to David, his documentary about the Israeli actor David Cunio, a hostage of Hamas still being held in Gaza.
Last year, the Berlinale ran into controversy after the Palestinian and Israeli directors of documentary No Other Land denounced Israel’s “apartheid” from the awards stage, triggering angry accusations of antisemitism from German politicians.
Asked about a Guardian interview last month in which Tuttle warned that a polarised debate in Germany about Israel’s military action in Gaza was leading some international artists to shun the festival, she said she had been working on “outreach” to reassure film-makers that “the festival is a space for open dialogue”.
The Berlinale, billed as the world’s largest film festival that is open to the public, ranks with Cannes and Venice among the top global events promoting new cinema.
US industry magazine Variety called the programme under Tuttle’s leadership “less niche and more crossover than recent Berlinale lineups” while keeping “the edginess and iconoclastic flare that has symbolised the festival since its inception”.
Last year, the Senegalese-French director Mati Diop’s documentary Dahomey on the first major return of looted treasures from Europe to Africa won the Golden Bear.
The Berlin International Film Festival, also known as Berlinale, is set to showcase a wide array of films this year, with one of the highly anticipated highlights being the Broadway biopic starring Jessica Chastain.Chastain, known for her compelling performances in films such as “Zero Dark Thirty” and “The Help,” will take on the role of a Broadway icon in this biopic that delves into the highs and lows of the theater world.
In addition to the Broadway biopic, another standout film at Berlinale will be a gripping drama starring Chastain as a fearless journalist uncovering a political scandal. This film promises to be a powerful and timely exploration of the intersection of politics and media.
With Jessica Chastain’s talent and versatility on full display, audiences can expect to be captivated by her performances in these two films at Berlinale. Stay tuned for more updates on these exciting highlights from the prestigious film festival.

#Broadway #biopic #film #Jessica #Chastain #among #Berlinale #highlights #Berlin #film #festivalAll the Broadway Cameos in CBS’ Elsbeth Season 2, Part 1
CBS’s hit investigative murder mystery series Elsbeth is back for season 2! The spin-off series from The Good Wife franchise has returned with Emmy-winner and Broadway alum Carrie Preston as Elsbeth Tascioni, “an astute but unconventional attorney who uses her singular point of view to make unique observations and corner brilliant criminals alongside the NYPD,” according to the official synopsis.
Returning to the second season are Broadway performers Wendell Pierce (Death of a Salesman) and Carra Patterson (Jitney) as precinct captain C.W. Wagner and partner in justice Office Kaya Bianke, respectively.
Like many of our favorite crime dramas, Elsbeth takes place and films in New York City. What does that mean for us theatre fans? Lots of familiar Broadway faces making guest star appearances, that’s what! Last spring, we gave you some of our favorite cameos that appeared in the premiere season, and we’re back to give you more. So far, the hit show has had Tony winners and nominees, a Dear Evan Hansen alum, and even a familiar face from The Good Wife. While we joked about it in our last recap, could this mean the possibility of more cameos from The Good Wife franchise (hint: Audra McDonald or Christine Baranski)?
Whatever the future holds for Elsbeth and her team, we’ll be watching. The second half of season 2 begins January 30. In the meantime, you can catch up on season 1 and the first eight episodes of season 2, now streaming on Paramount+.
Stop reading now if you want to avoid spoilers.

Season 2, Episode 1: Subscription to Murder
Well, there are a few ways to make a big splash for your season two premiere, and what better way than an appearance from three-time Tony winner Nathan Lane! Lane plays an opera-obsessed perfectionist whose nights at the opera are suddenly sullied when a Wall Street himbo (played by Corey Mach) sits directly in front of Lane. Wouldn’t a ruined evening caused by ringing (and answered) phones, loud potato chip chewing, and more antics drive anyone to the brink? Elsbeth is on the case, working with Prayer for the French Republic‘s Daniel Oreskes as Detective Buzz Fleming.
John Behlmann and Carrie Preston

Episode 2: The Wrong Stuff
Billionaires. They’re just like us, right? When training to travel to a space station, a group of billionaires become murder suspects when one of them is killed in a not-so-freak “accident” during a session. To help Elsbeth solve the case, the NY Fire Department is called in to help assess the explosion. Enter Fire Marshall Jake Turling played by the ever-so-dreamy John Behlmann (Smash), who might be trying to start some romantic flames of his own with Elsbeth.
Making a small cameo this episode is Broadway favorite Christian Borle, who is actually known to Good Wife. Borle reprises his role as Chicago lawyer Carter Schmidt who worked with Elsbeth at her previous firm. Schmidt warns that a past divorce case they worked on might be coming back to haunt them. Hopefully, we will see more of him in season two!

Episode 3: Devil’s Night
When an ex-child star, Mac, wakes up with a bad hangover, no memory of the last 24 hours, and is covered in blood, Elsbeth must help her recover her steps to determine if she committed murder on Halloween. Through the course of the investigation, the team attends a party thrown by Mac’s friend and former producer Roya (How to Dance in Ohio‘s Haven Burton). Could Roya’s pet monkey and invisible ink hand stamps be the key to figuring out whodunnit?
Vanessa Williams and Carrie Preston
Michael Parmelee/CBS
Episode 4: Diamonds Are for Elsbeth
If there is one thing people love to watch, it’s an elaborate jewel heist. And what do people enjoy watching more than that? A heist gone bad! Broadway and screen royalty Vanessa Williams (West End’s The Devil Wears Prada) plays Roslyn Bridwell, a fading socialite whose funds have dried up and will soon be kicked out of one of the most exclusive jewelry stores in NYC. But she isn’t going down without a fight. Williams’ character hatches a scheme with a ragtag team, including disgruntled store employee Judith (Becky Ann Baker), to pull it off. However, everything does not go to plan and some drastic measures must be taken.
Carrie Preston and Laura Benanti
Michael Parmelee/CBS
Episode 5: Elsbeth Flips the Bird
If you can’t stand the heat, get out of the kitchen. Elsbeth investigates the attack on a world-renowned chef and the death of a staff member at her five-star restaurant. The episode sees a return of not one, but two season 1 Broadway guest stars. First, leading the case (though let’s be honest, no detective is really in charge if Elsbeth is involved) is NYPD Detective Edwards, played by Tony nominee Micaela Diamond. Also back is Tony winner Laura Benanti playing supermodel (now turned friend) Nadine Clay, who uses her VIP status to help Elsbeth gain access to a seat at the chef’s table. If there is one thing you can count on with a Benanti cameo is some great one-liners and laughs…even when murder is afoot.
The episode also features a short cameo from Ciara Renée (Waitress) as pop star TruRose. The singer is filing for divorce from one of Elsbeth’s former clients in Chicago and pleads for help, while ominously telling Elsbeth that helping her can make right the things she did for her former husband. Could this be the mystery case that Borle’s character warned about in episode two?
Carrie Preston

Episode 6: Gold, Frankincense, and Murder
Murder? At Christmas? Crime never takes a holiday at Elsbeth when Broadway funnyman Christopher Fitzgerald‘s (Spamalot) character Dirk Dasher, a celebrity Christmas curator, hatches a sinister plan to get rid of his wife. Unfortunately, the plan backfires. And who is witness to it all? & Juliet‘s Michael Ivan Carrier as Laird, the overworked, abused, and drama queen executive assistant to celebrity fashion editor Gisela Mott. Nothing says Happy Holidays like homicide!
Also, in a fun surprise for fans of the show and Broadway, Ben Levi Ross (Dear Evan Hansen) guest stars as Elsbeth’s son Teddy. We’ve heard her talk about him since season 1 and fans finally get to meet the son of the proud lawyer turned consultant. If I was a betting man, I’d wager we might get to see more Ross in the future.
Nikki Crawford
Michael Parmelee/CBS
Episode 7: One Angry Woman
What happens when our heroine is called in for jury duty? A whole shmorgishborg of Broadway guest stars! Elsbeth is selected to serve on the jury for a woman accused of killing her neighbor (who’s also her secret lover). Serving as the prosecutor is Fat Ham‘s Tony nominee Nikki Crawford, with Max Crumm (The Connector) and Sasha Hutchings (Gypsy) as fellow juror members. Crumm’s character has other motives for being on the jury and Hutchings is a businesswoman desperate to finish the case and get back to her job. With Broadway stars surrounding Elsbeth, jury duty has never been more fun.
Laurie Metcalf and Carrie Preston
Michael Parmelee/CBS
Episode 8: Toil and Trouble
in the mid-series finale, it’s “lights, camera, action” for the NYPD team as they investigate the murder of the showrunner of a long-running crime series. It’s one of the more graphic deaths from this series so far (I mean, how often do you see someone take the heel of a stiletto through the eye?). The fictional series’ leading lady Regina Coburn (played by two-time Tony winner Laurie Metcalf) is desperate to be rid of the long-running series so that she can pursue real acting: performing as Lady M in the Scottish play in the West End. But to what extreme is she willing to go to finally escape her career prison? Enter KPOP‘s Amy Keum as the victim’s assistant. She’s all-seeing and all-knowing when it comes to the comings and goings of her former boss. Could she be the key to solving the mystery? If this isn’t a lesson in being kind to the assistants of the world, I don’t know what is. They might just help with your murder investigation!
Meanwhile, could love be in the air for one of our series regulars? Patterson’s character is on the hunt for a new roommate and might have found the perfect candidate in doctor-turned-coroner Cameron Clayden. Played by Slave Play‘s Sullivan Jones, could this perfect roommate also be a love connection?
Season One and the first eight episodes of Season Two of Elsbeth are now available to stream on Paramount+.

Old conflicts resurface, new issues battled, and dinner is taking absolutely forever to be served. Will the love the Dahls have for each other be enough to get them through, or will this be their last Christmas together?”

Taking advantage of the lovely weather, George and Amal Clooney headed out for a romantic dinner on December 14 in St. Tropez, about an hour and a half from their home in Brignoles, France. The duo dressed casually — Amal, 46, in denim cutoffs, while George, 63, wore a black polo shirt — and held hands as they walked.
It was a nice moment for the pair, who are staring down an extended separation when the ER actor heads across the Atlantic to star in Good Night, and Good Luck on Broadway.
“George has never done Broadway before, and he’s thrilled about the opportunity, but between rehearsals and performances, it means he will spend six months in NYC,” an insider exclusively tells Life & Style. “Amal is going to remain in France, where their two children are settled in — and there’s no denying this is going to test their 10-year marriage.”
Earlier in their relationship, Amal would have just gone with George. But now that the couple’s twins — Alexander and Ella — are 7 years old, it’s no longer an option. “My kids are of a certain age, we’re not going to uproot our kids out of school and run around,” George recently told GQ. He and Amal also love the relative anonymity the children have at their 425-acre estate, known as Domaine le Canadel, and in the surrounding community, where the family can go into town without fear of encountering paparazzi. “We don’t want to have photos of our kids out there,” George shared.
George and Amal Clooney Plan to Be ‘Long-Distance’ for 6 Months
The current plan is for the family to try the long-distance thing for a while and see how that works. “They’re going to stay in touch over FaceTime and text,” says the insider. “George will be able to speak to the kids every night before bedtime, taking the time difference into consideration. And Amal might be able to fly out for the occasional weekend visit.” But the truth is, in the past when jobs have kept George and Amal separated, “it didn’t do the marriage much good,” says the insider. “So spending so much time apart is bound to be challenging.”
George Amal Clooney Prepare to Be Separated Amid Broadway Stint
Still, George — who will be performing onstage eight times a week — is adamant this is a one-time deal. “That’s going to be six months of my life in New York. But … I won’t do another thing,” he’s said of his “time allotment” in 2025. “I’m going to give myself time with my kids. I really enjoy driving them to school, and my wife and I are having a really wonderful time. So I don’t want to lose all of that.”
Indeed, his latest motto is “Everything in moderation.” Their relationship is seemingly strong enough to withstand the distance, as the insider adds, “George is telling Amal and the twins that he’ll be back home in no time at all.”
George and Amal Clooney, Hollywood’s power couple, are gearing up for an extended period of separation as George prepares for his upcoming Broadway stint. The couple, who are known for their strong and loving relationship, are bracing themselves for the challenges that come with being apart for an extended period of time.George is set to star in a highly anticipated Broadway production, which will require him to be in New York City for an extended period of time. Meanwhile, Amal will be holding down the fort at home with their two young children.
While the couple is no stranger to spending time apart due to their busy schedules, this upcoming separation is bound to be challenging. They have always made it a priority to prioritize their relationship and make time for each other, but the demands of George’s Broadway stint will undoubtedly put their relationship to the test.
Despite the challenges ahead, George and Amal are determined to make it work and are committed to staying connected and supporting each other throughout this separation. Their love and dedication to each other will undoubtedly see them through this difficult time, and they are looking forward to reuniting once George’s Broadway stint comes to an end.

‘Wicked’ Overtakes ‘Mamma Mia’ as Biggest Broadway Adaptation Globally
Universal’s “Wicked” is officially the highest-grossing Broadway adaptation in global box office history, overtaking 2008’s “Mamma Mia” to notch the harmonious milestone.
“Wicked” has generated $634 million worldwide after six weeks of release while “Mamma Mia” amassed $611 million (not adjusted for inflation) by the end of its box office run. “Wicked,” starring Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo, has earned $424 million domestically and, weeks ago, surpassed 1978’s “Grease” ($188.62 million) as the biggest Broadway adaptation at the domestic box office. These benchmarks are good news for Universal since the second half of the big-budget musical, “Wicked: For Good,” opens in 2025. This record is also notable because it bucks the recent trend of underseen stage-to-screen remakes, including 2023’s “The Color Purple” and 2021’s “West Side Story,” “Dear Evan Hansen” and “In the Heights.”
Meanwhile, Paramount’s “Sonic the Hedgehog 3” cemented a franchise record with $74 million in its international box office debut, the largest overseas opening in the family friendly series. This number has been slightly inflated to include preview screenings. However, the three-day figure still towers above 2022’s “Sonic the Hedgehog 2,” which launched with $33 million from abroad markets. The third “Sonic” enjoyed the biggest start in the United Kingdom with $15.1 million, followed by Mexico with $10.3 million and France with $7.3 million. The film opens in 10 additional territories, including Korea, Brazil, and Italy, next weekend. “Sonic 3” opened nine days earlier in North America, where the animated adventure has generated $137 million to date for a global tally of $211 million.
Also new to international screens, “Nosferatu” collected $3 million from just five markets. The R-rated gothic tale, directed by Robert Eggers and starring Bill Skarsgård as Count Orlok, will continue its overseas rollout in the new year. At the domestic box office, “Nosferatu” landed $21.1 million over the traditional weekend and $40.3 million over its first five days of release. Focus Features is releasing the film in North America while its parent company Universal is handling the distribution overseas.
Despite the newcomers, Disney’s “Mufasa” towered over international box office charts with $77.1 million from 52 material territories. The “Lion King” prequel seems to be rebounding after a rough start with ticket sales at $214 million internationally and $328 million globally to date.
Another Disney holdover, “Moana 2,” collected $36 million overseas over the weekend, bringing its international tally to $487.8 million. The animated adventure about a Polynesian wayfinder has amassed $882 million globally and is readying to swim past the $900 million mark. The “Moana” sequel adds to Disney’s impressive year, bolstered by the billion-dollar box office successes of “Inside Out 2” and “Deadpool & Wolverine.”
In a shocking turn of events, the beloved musical “Wicked” has officially overtaken “Mamma Mia” as the biggest Broadway adaptation globally. With its captivating storyline, memorable songs, and stunning performances, “Wicked” has captured the hearts of audiences around the world. The show, which tells the untold story of the witches of Oz, has been a massive success since its debut in 2003. Its powerful message of friendship, acceptance, and empowerment has resonated with audiences of all ages, making it a must-see for theater lovers everywhere.
With its record-breaking box office sales and countless awards, “Wicked” has solidified its place as a true Broadway phenomenon. Fans can’t get enough of the show’s iconic characters, breathtaking costumes, and show-stopping musical numbers.
As “Wicked” continues to dazzle audiences around the globe, it’s clear that this timeless musical will remain a favorite for years to come. So grab your broomstick and get ready to be spellbound by the magic of “Wicked”!

Marching bands have been a staple of American culture for decades, providing entertainment and excitement at football games, parades, and other events. But beyond their traditional role as halftime performers, marching bands have made a significant impact on the cultural landscape, particularly on Broadway. In recent years, marching bands have gained recognition for their innovative and dynamic performances that blend music, dance, and visual effects. These performances have caught the attention of Broadway producers, who have incorporated marching band elements into their shows to add a unique and vibrant energy.
One of the most notable examples of this trend is the Tony Award-winning musical “Bandstand,” which tells the story of a group of World War II veterans who form a swing band to compete in a national radio contest. The show features a live marching band on stage, performing intricate choreography and high-energy musical numbers that bring the story to life in a way that traditional actors alone could not.
Another Broadway show that has incorporated marching band elements is “Blast!,” a high-energy production that showcases the talents of a group of musicians, dancers, and color guard performers. The show features elaborate choreography, intricate formations, and a mix of traditional and contemporary music that dazzles audiences and showcases the versatility and creativity of marching bands.
Beyond Broadway, marching bands have also influenced popular culture in other ways. For example, the hit TV show “Glee” featured a high school marching band that played a prominent role in several episodes, showcasing the dedication and talent of its members. Additionally, marching band music has been featured in numerous movies, commercials, and other media, further cementing its place in the cultural landscape.
In addition to their entertainment value, marching bands also play an important role in fostering teamwork, discipline, and creativity among their members. Many students who participate in marching bands go on to pursue careers in music, dance, or other creative fields, using the skills and experiences they gained from their time in the band to fuel their success.
Overall, marching bands have had a lasting impact on American culture, from their traditional performances on football fields to their innovative and dynamic shows on Broadway. Their influence can be seen in a wide range of creative endeavors, showcasing the power of music, dance, and visual effects to captivate audiences and inspire future generations of performers.
