Charlie Woods, the son of Tiger Woods, is setting his sights on a career in golf. The 16-year-old has been learning from his father, who is keen to pass on his golfing wisdom.
Despite the pressure of emulating a 15-time major winner, Charlie seems unfazed and led his Florida high school to a state championship victory in 2023. He recently made headlines in December when he scored his first hole-in-one.
However, he still has a long journey to match his father’s success, who tops the PGA Tour’s all-time prize money list. Express Sport takes a closer look at the teenager’s budding golf career.
Net worth
According to Sportskeeda, Charlie’s net worth is estimated at around £20million ($25m), mainly due to potential sponsorship deals and a trust fund set up by his father. As an amateur golfer, there’s no exact figure for his earnings so far.
The youngster has played alongside his dad at the PNC Championship several times, most recently finishing second after scoring his hole-in-one. The Woods family missed out on the top prize in a play-off with Bernhard and Jason Langer.
Their total prize money from the tournament is £242k ($300k). While an impressive amount for a 16-year-old, it is a small sum compared to his father’s course earnings of £97m ($120m) and overall net worth of £1.05bn ($1.3bn), as reported by Forbes.
Brand deal rumours
A significant portion of Tiger’s earnings come from endorsement deals, and brands are expected to line up to collaborate with his son, Charlie, as the Woods family aims to establish a golfing dynasty. Charlie is eligible for Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) deals, typically offered to star student-athletes, but there’s no confirmation yet that he has signed with any brand.
Rumours circulated that Charlie had partnered with Greyson, a clothing brand valued at an estimated £31m ($39m), after he was seen wearing the company’s logo at the 2023 PNC Championship. However, neither Woods nor the brand confirmed a deal.
At the most recent PNC event, Woods sported Sun Day Red apparel, a label launched by his father last year, but he isn’t listed as an official ambassador. Charlie’s high school coach, Toby Harbeck was previously asked about potential sponsorships.
“I’m sure someone’s going to approach him with [NIL],” he said, according to Marca. “But they’re so smart and they’ve got such good people around them that I think the only thing we need to be careful of is making sure we’re all aware of what’s going on and that deals with all kids.”
‘I’m broke’ claim
Charlie’s celebration of his first-ever hole-in-one was briefly interrupted when his dad reminded him of one of golf’s golden rules. Tiger hugged his son and smiled before telling Charlie that he would be getting in a round of drinks. “You’re buying for everyone out here,” Woods Snr said, to which Charlie responded, “I’m not buying. I’m broke.”
The light-hearted family banter continued as Sam, their caddy and Charlie’s sister, urged him to follow tradition before his dad reinforced the point. “You’re buying. He has to buy,” Tiger declared. “That’s protocol for making a hole-in-one. Round on you, bud.”
Charlie’s reluctance seems to show that the Woods family has chosen not to rush into any major sponsorship deals for the teenager. Nonetheless, Tiger expressed immense pride in their team effort at the PNC Championship.
“For us to have that experience together, I know we didn’t win, but it was the fact that we competed,” he said. “No one really made a mistake out there, we had to earn it and that’s what you want to have. Hats off to the Langers – they played amazing.”
Tiger Woods’ son Charlie has been making headlines recently, not just for his impressive golf skills at a young age, but also for rumors surrounding his net worth. While it’s difficult to determine an exact figure for a child, some reports have suggested that Charlie could already have a substantial net worth due to his famous father.
However, Tiger Woods has dismissed these claims, stating that his son is not “broke” as some have suggested. Woods has made it clear that he wants Charlie to have a normal childhood and not be burdened by financial pressures at such a young age.
Despite this, there are rumors circulating that Charlie could potentially inherit a sizeable fortune from his father, with some estimates suggesting it could be as high as £30 million. While these rumors may be unsubstantiated, it’s clear that Charlie Woods is already making a name for himself in the golf world and could have a bright future ahead of him.

Note: This story contains spoilers from “The Rookie” Season 7, Episode 3.
With the third episode of Season 7, “The Rookie” finally tied up a long-running loose end that dates all the way back to Season 2 — what the heck happened between Tim Bradford (Eric Winter) and his one-time girlfriend, Rachel Hall (Jasmine Matthews)?
The character debuted on the show about five years ago in the third episode of Season 2, “The Bet,” which saw Lucy (Melissa O’Neil) and Tim strike up a simple bet: she bet she could find him a good match for a blind date and he bet she couldn’t. The wager? If she won, she got to finally switch uniforms and wear short sleeves. If not, no short sleeves and she had to do 50 pushups after every call.
That’s when Lucy set Tim up with social worker Rachel, an old college friend of hers, who became Tim’s first big romance after his messy and painful split from his ex-wife, Isabel. (Obviously, Lucy won the bet, though not without Tim trying to derail it first, of course.) Tim and Rachel even started to get pretty serious, with Tim standing up to her father to continue pursuing their relationship.
Shortly thereafter, Rachel got a dream job in New York, and while that might make a natural break, the last time we saw them together in “The Hunt,” they were cute as could be, sharing a passionate farewell kiss and deciding to try to make it work long distance. But then, that was that.
So what happened to Tim and Rachel’s romance? Rachel returned in the Season 7 episode “Out of Pocket” and gave Tim — and the audience — a direct explanation. In a bit of a cheeky meta-moment, Rachel said, “I know I kind of disappeared,” before explaining further.
“I’m sorry I didn’t keep in touch, I was just working constantly, and then my company downsized, and I was just trying to keep my head above water until I couldn’t, and now I’m here,” she told Tim (who, in very Bradford tradition, insists he didn’t “need closure”). And that’s how they “ended with a whimper and not a bang,” as Rachel put it.
The episode also answered another question that might have been on people’s minds: how did Rachel feel about Lucy getting into a serious relationship with Tim after her? Turns out, she didn’t mind a bit. It’s all pretty straightforward thanks to good communication and good sense.
“I called her when Tim and I got together and we talked it out,” Lucy explained.
To which, Rachel noted, “They were a much better match anyway.”
Or as Celina succinctly put it: “Hos before bros.”
After weeks of speculation and anticipation, fans of the hit TV show The Rookie finally got the answer they’ve been waiting for – why did Tim and Rachel break up?
In a recent episode, viewers were given a glimpse into the past of Tim and Rachel’s relationship. It was revealed that the couple had been struggling for some time, with Tim’s dedication to his job as a police officer causing strain on their relationship. Rachel, who had her own demanding career, felt neglected and unappreciated by Tim, leading to constant arguments and tension between the two.
Ultimately, the couple decided to call it quits, realizing that they were better off apart than together. While fans were saddened by the news, many have praised the show for addressing such a common issue in relationships and showing the complexities of balancing work and personal life.
As the season continues, it remains to be seen if Tim and Rachel will find their way back to each other or if they will move on and find happiness elsewhere. One thing is for sure – The Rookie has once again proven to be a show that isn’t afraid to tackle tough subjects and deliver emotional and impactful storytelling.

Upon joining, ahead of the game against Arsenal, she told the club website: “I’m so happy and really excited to be here. It doesn’t feel real. There are a lot of things about Chelsea that made me want to come here — the culture, the winning mentality, staff and players. It’s a top environment to learn and grow in. Right now, that’s what I’m looking to do. It was an easy choice for me.”
So, how did this mega-deal come about? Tom Hamilton, Emily Keogh and Jeff Carlisle analyse the biggest transfer in women’s soccer.
A long-standing interest
Chelsea had long-standing interest in signing Girma, and former Chelsea boss and current USWNT head coach Emma Hayes is on record as saying she is the “the best defender I’ve ever seen.” But while the club never made a move while Hayes was in charge, they saw an opportunity to pounce during this window and took it.
Following Kadeisha Buchanan‘s ACL injury, Chelsea were looking to bolster their resources at centre-back. For a team who are dominating the Women’s Super League (WSL) under new boss Sonia Bompastor (with 10 wins and one draw from 11 games — and a six-point lead at the top of the table) it might seem odd to splash so much money on one player, but Girma is only 24 years old and has the potential to be a cornerstone of this Chelsea team for the next decade, while also stepping in as a long-term replacement for 31-year-old club-legend Millie Bright.
The Blues will make Girma one of the highest-paid players in the WSL and that is why they were able to beat off competition for her signature from both Arsenal and Lyon. A source told ESPN that one of the reasons Arsenal backed out of the deal was because of her expected wage demands, but the club were also unwilling to break the world record for the transfer fee either. Once Chelsea made it clear they could offer her what she wanted, the rest was simple. — Tom Hamilton
A clear preference amid other offers
Arsenal had also shown a long-standing interest in Girma — ironically under Jonas Eidevall, who is now the coach of the Wave — but when it came down to the final stages of negotiations it never truly felt that they were in serious contention. And when the time came for Girma to make a decision, Arsenal were not among the final candidates, despite their desire to strengthen their defensive options.
According to sources close to the situation, Girma had a clear preference for Chelsea as she considered her next move. She engaged in discussions with key figures who could offer insight, including Hayes, to gather opinions about signing with the West London club. And while Arsenal showed interest throughout the process, Girma’s inclination towards Chelsea was evident from the start.
However, Lyon were a highly competitive option when they entered the race late on. Known for their storied history in women’s football and consistent dominance in Europe (with a record eight UEFA Champions League titles since 2011), the French giants presented an enticing opportunity for Girma to compete at the highest level. With owner Michele Kang’s substantial financial backing, Lyon were also well-equipped to handle the significant transfer fee and wage demands associated with acquiring a player of Girma’s calibre.
In the end, Lyon and Chelsea made bids of $1.1m to sign her, though according to a source close to the negotiations, both clubs were keen to avoid the deal escalating into a full-scale bidding war.
For Lyon, the pursuit was not just about adding another talented defender to their ranks but also about maintaining their reputation as a powerhouse in women’s football and remain competitive in a transfer market that has seen increasing activity in recent years.
Girma, aware of Lyon’s winning pedigree and their unwavering commitment to excellence, undoubtedly saw the club as a viable contender for her next chapter. But she ultimately favoured a move to Chelsea. Despite Lyon’s best efforts, it was always going to be difficult to compete with the personal connection and alignment that Chelsea offered.
A source said that, above all, Girma was drawn to Chelsea’s dynamic and ambitious environment, as well as the opportunity to work under a team with a strong growing dominance in Europe. It was Chelsea’s vision and appeal that aligned more closely with Girma’s personal and professional aspirations. And that’s why she chose them. — Emily Keogh

Hamilton: Girma to Chelsea the biggest move in women’s football history
Tom Hamilton talks about Naomi Girma’s expected transfer to Chelsea for a world record transfer fee of over $1m.
Why San Diego couldn’t say no
Camille Ashton was brought on board as the Wave’s GM in June 2024, and was immediately faced with a tough pill to swallow. Girma, a mainstay in the team since its inaugural season in 2022, wanted out of San Diego. In fact, Girma had wanted to move as far back as a year ago, six months before Ashton’s hiring.
If this sequence of events sounds familiar, that’s because it is. The word out of San Diego is that Jaedyn Shaw‘s recent departure — in her case via a trade to the North Carolina Courage — followed a similar timeline in terms of communicating her desire to leave and her eventual departure.
That two such prominent players expressed a desire to leave, at minimum, raises eyebrows. The Wave has endured considerable instability over the last six months in the front office, coaching and player ranks. Casey Stoney was fired as manager shortly after Ashton’s arrival. Club icon Alex Morgan announced her retirement in September. Then in December, Jill Ellis resigned as president. Amid all this were multiple lawsuits filed against the team by former employees alleging a toxic work environment, followed by a countersuit by Ellis.
However, Ashton insists that none of this had anything to do with Girma’s desire to leave San Diego and told ESPN: “Any sort of change that’s happened, this desire of [Girma’s] predates any of that [upheaval], so it really doesn’t have anything to do with it.”
But it did leave the Wave in a position where if the right offer came along, it couldn’t say no.
“I think if somebody does not want to be in the organization, not because of anything bad happening, but just because they’re ready for the next chapter or another chapter, I don’t think that that’s ultimately what’s best for the club either to keep them,” Ashton said. “We obviously had conversations, and we did our part … I think you’re better off figuring out how to do right by the player, but also it’s the right decision for the club at that point.”
Girma’s desire to move abroad meant the NWSL teams were out, and limited San Diego’s options in terms of where the player could land. But there were suitors, and Ashton indicated that it was only in the last couple of weeks that discussions accelerated. As noted already, Lyon came in with a competitive offer to match Chelsea, but Girma made her preference clear.
“Chelsea is where she wants to be,” Ashton said. “We also, though, made it clear to [Chelsea] that in order for us to move her we have to make sure that from a business perspective and from a team side that we are getting what we need out of it as well, because she’s obviously a big loss. And we were very clear that if that wasn’t the case then we don’t know if right now would be the window, or if it would be a next window. But she [Girma] really wanted to make a move this window, and ultimately we were able to secure a deal that made such for the club as well.
Some “back and forth” negotiations ensued, but the deal got done. “We landed in a good place that will help the club out as well,” Ashton said.
But that may take some time for San Diego fans to see. Two foundational players in Shaw and Girma are gone and replacing them won’t be easy. Ashton used the word “rebuild” in describing what has taken place in the Wave organization, both on the field and off it.
With the club now looking to move forward, she added: “It’s sort of this opportunity to reshape and to build this new way.” — Jeff Carlisle
A hunger for success
Chelsea have firmly established themselves as the major powerhouse in England, capturing the last five WSL titles under Hayes. And, since Bompastor took over in the summer, the club have continued to thrive, remaining unbeaten in all competitions. The Blues’ recent dominance has solidified their reputation as a global force in women’s football and their ability to attract some of the world’s best players.
Boasting one of the deepest and most talented squads across Europe, Chelsea were already a formidable opponent. However, Girma’s addition takes their defence to an entirely new level. Her arrival provides a crucial boost to a backline that has seen stalwart defender Bright in need of a consistent partner at centre-back.
Persistent injuries and departures have disrupted Chelsea’s defensive rhythm at times, but Girma’s presence offers both stability and world-class quality. With Girma alongside Bright, Chelsea have the potential to establish one of the most impenetrable defensive partnerships in the league, building on an already impressive defensive record that has seen them concede the second-fewest (6) goals this season.
The timing of Girma’s arrival could not be better. With Chelsea competing in the latter stages of the Champions League, battling in two domestic cup competitions, and pushing for an unprecedented sixth consecutive WSL title, squad rotation has become increasingly critical.
Girma’s versatility, composure, and leadership on the pitch will provide Bompastor with yet another world-class option as the season approaches its decisive final six months.
She steps into a team with an unparalleled hunger for success, a squad brimming with talent, and an infrastructure built to challenge for every major honour. For Chelsea, it’s another statement signing that reinforces their status as one of the premier destinations for elite players. — Keogh
Chelsea Football Club made history today by breaking the women’s transfer record to sign talented striker, Girma. The club paid a record-breaking fee to secure the services of the young phenom, showcasing their commitment to investing in women’s football.
Girma, who has been turning heads with her impressive performances on the pitch, is widely regarded as one of the most promising young talents in the women’s game. Her signing is a major coup for Chelsea and signals their ambition to continue competing at the highest level.
The club’s willingness to break the transfer record for Girma demonstrates their belief in her potential and their dedication to strengthening their squad. Fans are buzzing with excitement over the news, and can’t wait to see her in action wearing the Chelsea blue.
With Girma now in the fold, Chelsea’s women’s team is poised to make a serious impact in the upcoming season. Stay tuned for more updates on this groundbreaking signing and the team’s progress as they aim for glory on the pitch. #ChelseaFC #Girma #WomensFootball #TransferRecord

FC Barcelona head coach Hansi Flick will field his strongest side possible when the Catalans take on Benfica in the Estadio da Luz on Tuesday, for what is a vital Champions League league phase match.
“The objective this Tuesday is to win, it would be a big step. We want to win and qualify for the round of 16. We are second, in a good position, and it is important to play well and win in the last two games,” Flick said at his prematch press conference at the turn of the week.
Reminded that he did so at this very ground with Bayern Munich during the pandemic in 2020, the German said that: “One of the hardest things in this world is winning the Champions League.”
“You can do well but you compete against great teams. We are in three competitions and it is clear that for us it was very important to win the first title, the Super Cup,” he added.
Even so, lifting the big-eared trophy for the first time since 2015 at his current club is “one of our objectives” he revealed, even though “it’s a very difficult competition”.
“The future will tell, we will try. But I look at Liverpool and it’s incredible, they’re one of my favourite teams because of how they play and compete in every game. [Arne] Slot is doing a great job,” Flick went on.
For the task in hand then, Flick will field his strongest side possible which starts with Wojciech Szczesny between the sticks.
Gavi is flanked by Raphinha and Lamine Yamal to his left and right, as Robert Lewandowski is the central target man.
FC Barcelona Starting XI Vs. Benfica:Szczesny; Balde, Cubarsi, Araujo, Kounde; Casado, Pedri; Raphinha, Olmo, Lamine; Lewandowski
FC Barcelona is set to face off against Benfica in a crucial Champions League match, and manager Julian Nagelsmann is going for broke with his starting lineup.
In goal, Marc-Andre ter Stegen will be between the sticks, with a backline of Sergino Dest, Gerard Pique, Ronald Araujo, and Jordi Alba in front of him.
In midfield, Frenkie de Jong, Pedri, and Sergi Roberto will be pulling the strings, with Memphis Depay, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, and Ousmane Dembele leading the attack.
Nagelsmann’s lineup is an attacking one, with plenty of firepower up front to break down Benfica’s defense. Will this bold strategy pay off for FC Barcelona, or will Benfica be able to withstand the pressure and come out on top? Only time will tell. Stay tuned for live updates from the match!

Here’s an awesome life-imitates-art story from the press tour for ‘Captain America: Brave New World’ – Chris Evans was actually the one to inform Anthony Mackie that Steve Rogers would be passing the shield off to Sam Wilson at the end of ‘Avengers: Endgame’, making him the new Captain America in the MCU.
Mackie says it happened at Evans’ house in Atlanta one night before shooting, when Evans asked him if he had read the latest ‘Endgame’ script. He said he hadn’t, and when Evans insisted he come down to his man-cave to check out the final ten pages immediately, Mackie assumed that his character had been killed off. He thought Evans just wanted to see his reaction to reading that like a buddy who gets a kick out of watching you get rejected at a bar or something. When he got to the moment in the screenplay where Rogers hands him the shield, though, and Evans confirmed what that meant – they “jumped around in circles” like little kids celebrating together.
Say what you will about how Sam Wilson (and the Marvel Cinematic Universe as a whole) has been handled post-‘Endgame’, but that moment in the movie was an awesome passing of the torch and the fact that it actually happened like that in real life is incredible to me. Plus, Mackie has always come off as such a likable dude – whether it’s celebrating the Golden Globes win of his pal Sebastian Stan recently, taunting Tom Holland at Comic Cons and press events over the years, or even chopping it up on KFC Radio….
I hope ‘Captain America: Brave New World’ is awesome – for him especially. How could you not root for Papa Doc?
Marvel could really use a smash hit to open up 2025 and they’ll definitely need Sam Wilson’s Cap to hit with audiences before he steps up into what I’m assuming is a major role in the next two ‘Avengers’ movies. I know there’s been tons of test screenings and reshoots that have everybody panicked right now, but as I blogged yesterday, not all reshoots mean trouble….
I honestly like what I’ve seen from the trailers so far, with ‘Brave New World’ obviously trying to evoke the same espionage-feel ‘The Winter Soldier’ did….
We’ve got Harrison Ford playing the President of the United States (who is also a Red Hulk) again with Isiah Bradley trying to assassinate him (possibly under mind control), Giancarlo Esposito making his MCU debut, Tim Blake Nelson returning to the MCU to play a classic Marvel character in The Leader, that big ass Celestial in the ocean will finally be addressed….
….I mean, what could possibly go wrong? That all sounds pretty sick to me! Surely it’s not too much to cram into one movie with a runtime under two hours! I’m not in denial/praying about this movie as a massive Captain America fan!
P.S. If it does all go wrong and this disappoints us in the same way that ‘Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania’ did, my Valentine’s Day date with Clem will be RUINED! Listen to the latest episode of My Mom’s Basement below….
In a heartwarming moment on set, Chris Evans broke the news to Anthony Mackie that he would be the next Captain America. Evans, who portrayed Captain America in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, passed the shield to Mackie during the final moments of “Avengers: Endgame.”
Mackie recently shared the story of how Evans revealed the news to him, saying that Evans called him into his trailer and simply said, “You’re going to be the next Captain America.” Mackie was shocked and overwhelmed by the news, but Evans assured him that he was the right person for the role.
The passing of the shield from Evans to Mackie was a symbolic moment for both actors and fans alike. Mackie has since taken on the role of Captain America in the Disney+ series “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier,” where he has continued to impress audiences with his portrayal of the iconic character.
It’s clear that Evans and Mackie share a special bond, both on and off screen, and it’s heartwarming to hear about the support and encouragement that Evans provided to Mackie during this pivotal moment in his career. Chris Evans may no longer be Captain America, but his legacy lives on through Anthony Mackie’s portrayal of the beloved superhero.

We’re all excited about the ultimate CFP National Championship showdown between Ohio State vs Notre Dame. But a wild revelation from a 2x Super Bowl QB makes us take a double turn to the history of their respective starting QBs Riley Leonard and Will Howard. The fact that both these national championship QBs are transfers in their final eligibility makes the plot even more remarkable.
Riley Leonard and Will Howard were roommates! Notre Dame Fighting Irish posted a YouTube video of the Notre Dame QB during his post-practice press conference on January 16. In his speech, Riley Leonard dug out his past as Will Howard’s roommate, calling him a “goodroommate” and a “clean guy.” The Irish QB said, “At the time, we weren’t really the big names at the camp. We were just two dudes hustling, trying to compete, and make a name for ourselves kind of thing.” He reminisced, “It’s really cool to have those late-night conversations with him about life and whatever. To see where we are now, it’s really cool cause he’s a person I respect a lot.”

How did this revelation come about? We have both Archie Manning and Eli Manning to credit. The former New York Giants QB shared a text message that his father sent him which read – “FYI — Riley Leonard and Will Howard were roommates at Manning Passing Academy last summer!”

Only the best CFB QBs make it to the Manning Passing Academy held in Thibodaux, La. Both Leonard’s and Howard’s presence at this prestigious football camp is no surprise.
A big significance for the 2025 national championship QBs is that they both transferred before this past season. In his final collegiate season, Leonard led the independent Irish against all odds with a 14-1 record. They defeated Indiana, Georgia, and Penn State in the 12-team playoff to advance to their first Natty appearance in 2012.
Howard had been a force himself, leading the Buckeyes to a National Championship game since 2020 with a 13-2 record. Their final performance and outcome might determine the fate of HC Ryan Day who’s under a lot of pressure to win a championship game. But which QB has the better odds for the ultimate win?

A look at Riley Leonard and Will Howard’s performance
It was a breakout season for Riley Leonard who compiled a total season record of 2,606 yards and 19 touchdowns. He also added 866 rushing yards and 16 touchdowns on the ground. The 22-year-old’s playoff stats could’ve been better with 514 yards, three touchdowns, and three interceptions + 145 rushing yards and two TDs in the three postseason games but the potential is there.
Will Howard, on the other hand, is looking strong after sustaining an injury in his non-throwing hand in the last game against Texas. He excels above Leonard in terms of stats recording 919 yards, six touchdowns, and two interceptions in the playoffs. This season, he’s recorded a total of 3,779 yards and 33 touchdowns in addition to 169 rushing yards and seven rushing touchdowns.

As of now, Ohio State is an 8.5-point favorite over Notre Dame to win the National Championship title. But we never know if an upset is on the cards.
Recently, Notre Dame quarterback Riley Leonard took to social media to clear the air on injured teammate Will Howard after former NFL quarterback Eli Manning broke the internet with some wild news.
In a post on his Instagram account, Leonard addressed the rumors swirling about Howard’s injury status and set the record straight. He assured fans that Howard is doing well and is on track to make a full recovery.
The speculation began after Manning made some cryptic comments during a recent interview, hinting at a possible comeback for Howard. The news sent shockwaves through the football world, with fans and analysts speculating about what it could mean for Notre Dame’s upcoming season.
However, Leonard’s post put an end to the speculation and reassured fans that Howard’s health is the top priority. He thanked everyone for their support and asked for privacy as Howard continues his recovery process.
With this clarification from Leonard, Notre Dame fans can now breathe a sigh of relief knowing that their star quarterback is in good hands. As for Manning’s mysterious comments, it seems they were simply a case of misinterpretation.
We knew that Squid Game would be huge when it returned for season 2, given that season 1 was the most-watched Netflix series ever by a significant margin. But now it has set an entirely new record.
We don’t know viewership yet, it’s too early for that, though of course that’s going to be enormous. Rather, the record in question is that Squid Game season 2 is the first series to debut at #1 in all 93 countries where Netflix is available. That’s everywhere from the US, of course, to Cyprus to Honduras to Kenya to Oman to Thailand. The entire globe.
This simply doesn’t happen. Even big shows that do well on global charts never debut simultaneously at #1 on the service, as some regions always prefer one series over another, however popular. But here this is a clean sweep for Squid Game, which is not something the original achieved as it took some time to go fully viral. But not Stranger Things, not Wednesday, not anything else.
Squid Game
FlixPatrol
Now we wait for viewership. I did not imagine that Squid Game season 2 would be able to break the 2.2 billion hours viewed of season 1, but I suppose I cannot rule it out with a debut like this. You might think that subsequent seasons of shows cannot get higher viewership by definition if you need to catch up on a series, but that just isn’t the case. Shows like Money Heist and Stranger Things have much higher viewership than when they started.
If there is one thing working against Squid Game season 2 in this case, it’s that this season is just 7 episodes, down from 9 in season 1, meaning completing the season would be two less hours per viewer. Though it could get more viewers overall.
Additionally, Squid Game season 2 is not being received as well as season 1. It’s down to a 63% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes as opposed to an 83% for season 1. I suspect that much of this is due to the fact that this feels like more like half a season with (spoilers) the show stopping in the middle of the games with the rest to be finished in season 3 next year. It does end somewhat abruptly and plotlines that were built up end up going nowhere, perhaps a bit too much of a set-up for season 3. So I certainly understand the criticism.
I suspect that Squid Game season 2 will put up much better numbers than season 1 at least in its debut week, but long term? Can it catch the original? That remains to be seen, but this record-breaking debut could not be a better start.
Netflix’s highly anticipated second season of ‘Squid Game’ has just shattered a major record on the streaming platform. The South Korean survival drama, which gained immense popularity after its debut in 2021, has now become the most-watched TV show on Netflix in its first week of release.
The show’s second season has garnered over 142 million viewers globally in just its first seven days, surpassing the previous record held by ‘Bridgerton’ with 82 million viewers. This incredible achievement solidifies ‘Squid Game’ as a global phenomenon and cements its place as one of Netflix’s most successful original series.
Fans of the show have been eagerly awaiting the release of the second season, which promises to delve deeper into the twisted world of the deadly games. With its gripping storyline, intense action sequences, and complex characters, ‘Squid Game’ has captivated audiences around the world and shows no signs of slowing down.
If you haven’t already watched ‘Squid Game,’ now is the perfect time to catch up on the first season before diving into the highly acclaimed second season. With record-breaking viewership numbers and rave reviews from critics and fans alike, ‘Squid Game’ is a must-watch series that will keep you on the edge of your seat until the very end.
No offense to Chicago Med or Chicago P.D., but Chicago Fire is the best at connecting with the viewer on a personal, emotional level. The men and women of Firehouse 51 don’t have all the professional diplomas and certificates, and they aren’t always dealing with Chicago’s dark side with a gun in one hand and a badge in the other. These are good, likable, and, dare I say, relatable people, firefighters who put their lives on the line for the rich and the poor, the young and the old alike. The series has provided some of the franchise’s funniest moments and most heartbreaking as well (but a shoutout to Jessy Schram‘s Dr. Hannah Asher for one of Med‘s most gut-punching moments in Season 10, Episode 3). But it’s a Season 1 episode that serves as Chicago Fire‘s – and the One Chicago franchise’s – most devastating.
“A Coffin That Small” Should Never Be in ‘Chicago Fire’
Image via NBC
“A Coffin That Small” sees the squad flushing fire hydrants when a neighborhood kid calls them to his apartment complex. He leads them to an old laundry chute, where his brother is stuck. The team cuts the boy out of the wall, alive but severely injured. He’s sent to the hospital, pausing his story as Fire carries on with storylines involving a stolen ambulance, Shay (Lauren German) and Severide (Taylor Kinney) making plans for a pregnancy, and gunfire hitting the station as a result of a gang being angered after losing drugs, stashed in fire hydrants, being flushed away inadvertently at the start of the episode.
It all takes a backseat when the team learns that the boy from the laundry chute died at the hospital. The boy’s mother had said earlier that her son idolized firefighters and even gave the station a photo of her son in firefighter gear. A grieving Herrmann (David Eigenberg) looks at the photo, which they’ve pinned to the notice board, and walks away with purpose. The camera cuts away to the funeral procession for the boy, his small coffin in the hearse leading the procession, his mother and brother in the car just behind. As they drive down the road, something catches the mother’s attention on the sidewalk. She rolls down the window, looking through the snow, and her eyes swell. There, assembled in formal uniform, stand the team at Station 51, standing at attention to pay their respects to a boy they didn’t even know, a boy gone too soon.
What Makes ‘Chicago Fire’s “A Coffin That Small” So Heartrending
What is it about “A Coffin That Small” that is so heartrending? There’s no single definitive answer as to why, but a mixture of elements creates the “perfect storm,” if you will. The most obvious is the tragic loss of a child. Children’s deaths on television aren’t necessarily taboo, but they are rare, and rarer still are those that actually have related events on-screen, be it the death itself or, as in this case, a funeral procession. You don’t even need to have a child of your own to understand just how tragic that loss would be. Then, there’s David Eigenberg’s Herrmann. I’ve long contended that Herrmann is the beating heart of Chicago Fire, a man who wears his emotions on his sleeve, and when he turns around after looking at the picture, the look on his face, a mix of grief and determination, is right there, setting the scene for the funeral procession to follow (it’s a sin that Eigenberg hasn’t been recognized for his work on the show). And anytime that Station 51 comes out to support the community en masse, another element that separates Fire from Med and P.D., it’s a stirring reminder of why we feel so strongly about them.
It’s fair to say that what one person finds to be the most heartbreaking may not be the same as another, so what makes “A Coffin That Small” wrenching for me is at a deeper, personal level. I have been to the funeral of a child, a sweet girl by the name of Hope, who died shortly after her first birthday. Her whole, brief life was a fight to the end, a literal medical miracle that she lived as long as she did, and her story was followed by hundreds. Still, nothing can prepare you for seeing a “coffin that small” in real life. It was one of the most difficult things I have ever witnessed, and I think it’s safe to say I wasn’t alone in that sentiment. Your story is different, and that’s what makes Chicago Fire so engaging. No matter where you are in life or what you’re feeling, Fire seems to hit them all, even the most tragic.

Chicago Fire is available to stream in the U.S. on Peacock with new episodes returning on Wednesday, January 8.
As a die-hard fan of the hit TV show “Chicago Fire,” I have witnessed some truly heartbreaking moments throughout the series. But there is one moment in particular that truly shattered my heart into a million pieces.
In Season 3, Episode 13 titled “Three Bells,” the firehouse is hit with a devastating tragedy when one of their own, Firefighter Leslie Shay, is killed in a sudden and tragic accident. Shay was not only a beloved member of Firehouse 51, but she was also a friend, a confidante, and a source of light and laughter for her fellow firefighters.
The moment when Lieutenant Severide and the rest of the crew realize that Shay is gone forever is absolutely gut-wrenching. The raw emotion and heartbreak on their faces as they struggle to come to terms with her death is truly heartbreaking to watch.
Shay’s death not only leaves a hole in the hearts of her friends and colleagues, but also in the hearts of fans like myself. Her absence is felt in every episode that follows, a constant reminder of the devastating loss that the firehouse has suffered.
This moment in “Chicago Fire” is a poignant reminder of the sacrifices that first responders make every day, and the bond that forms between them in the face of danger and tragedy. It is a reminder that even heroes are not immune to the pain and heartbreak that life can bring.
Rest in peace, Leslie Shay. Your memory lives on in the hearts of all who knew and loved you.

“Is that my GTO? I built that thing 15 years ago and somebody stole it,” Matt exclaims as a run-down car enters his garage. When his daughter exits the vehicle with her kids and a “Hey Dad,” he quips, “And there is the thief.”
Back at Matt’s home, he and Riley have a confrontation about how they last parted ways. When he notes that the last time she left the house she “looked back and gave me the double bird,” Riley sighs and adds, “I was 18 — the double bird is how I ended all our conversations.”
“I’m crawling home because I’m broke and need a place to stay until I figure out what the rest of my life looks like,” Riley admits in an honest conversation with Matt.

“You guys can stay here,” he says to which she replies in shock, “Really? Because I haven’t changed a lot!”
Despite their willingness to make amends, Matt and Riley’s relationship dynamic proves to be more difficult.
“Can we try to talk to each other like rational adults?” she asks as Matt jokes, “Have you watched the news lately? That’s not a thing anymore.”

The father-daughter duo reflects on how Riley’s mother “made a relationship between you and me possible” before her death.
“She was our bridge. Maybe we could build our own bridge?” Riley says, offering an olive branch.
“Okay, and then if I want to do something that you don’t like, you just look at the roof over your head and go, ‘Okay,’” he replies and Riley interjects, “I’m not sure you understand how bridges work.”
