  • Lions hiring Broncos passing game assistant John Morton as new offensive coordinator

Johnson was hired as the Bears’ head coach on Jan. 21, leaving behind an offense that was top five in points and yards in each of Johnson’s three seasons as offensive coordinator. In 2024, Detroit boasted the No. 1 scoring offense and the No. 2 unit in total yards.

Though it’s a tough act to follow, Morton will find a cornucopia of talent such as offensive tackle Penei Sewell, running backs Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery, wide receivers Amon-Ra St. Brown and Jameson Williams and quarterback Jared Goff.

Morton heads back to Motown with plenty of experience.

He began his days in the NFL with the then-Oakland Raiders in 2002 as an offensive assistant. He later took on the same role with the New Orleans Saints under Sean Payton, spent four seasons as USC’s offensive coordinator, was with the San Francisco 49ers and Saints as a wide receivers coach and then became the New York Jets’ offensive coordinator in 2017. He returned to the Raiders as a senior offensive assistant after that. Following his stint with Campbell in ’22, Morton has been with Payton and the Broncos the past two seasons.

After a stunning Divisional Round loss to the Washington Commanders, Campbell and the Lions lost both their coordinators — Johnson to the Bears and defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn to the New York Jets.

They’ve moved just as quickly, though, promoting Kelvin Sheppard to DC and hiring Morton to take on the offensive reins.

The Detroit Lions have made a key addition to their coaching staff, hiring John Morton from the Denver Broncos as their new offensive coordinator. Morton, who has spent the last two seasons as a passing game assistant with the Broncos, brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to the Lions’ offense.

Morton’s resume includes stints as an offensive coordinator with the New York Jets and an assistant coach with the San Francisco 49ers and New Orleans Saints. He is known for his innovative play-calling and ability to develop young quarterbacks, making him an ideal candidate to lead the Lions’ offense.

With a talented roster that includes quarterback Jared Goff and star wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown, Morton will have plenty of weapons at his disposal to help turn around the Lions’ offense. Fans can expect to see a more dynamic and explosive offense under Morton’s leadership, as he looks to bring a new energy and creativity to Detroit.

Lions head coach Dan Campbell expressed his excitement about the hiring, stating, “John is a proven offensive mind who has a track record of success in this league. We believe he is the perfect fit to lead our offense and help us take the next step as a team. We are thrilled to have him on board and can’t wait to see what he brings to the table.”

With Morton now in place as the Lions’ offensive coordinator, Detroit fans can look forward to an exciting and high-powered offense in the upcoming season. Stay tuned for more updates as Morton begins to implement his vision for the team.

  • Lions working to hire Broncos’ John Morton as OC, sources say

The Detroit Lions are working to hire Denver Broncos pass game coordinator John Morton as their offensive coordinator, sources told ESPN’s Adam Schefter on Monday.

Morton would replace Ben Johnson, who was hired as the Chicago Bears‘ head coach.

Morton, 55, is traveling to Detroit to meet with the team. He was part of head coach Dan Campbell’s Lions staff in 2022 as a senior offensive assistant before joining Sean Payton’s staff with the Broncos in 2023.

Morton also was an assistant with the Saints (as wide receivers coach) on Payton’s staff when Campbell was the assistant head coach/tight ends coach in 2016.

Morton has previously been an offensive coordinator in the NFL with the New York Jets, in 2017. He also was an offensive coordinator with USC for two seasons (2009-10).

The Lions lost both their offensive and defensive coordinators this month as defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn was hired as the New York Jets’ head coach.

The Lions promoted linebackers coach Kelvin Sheppard to fill their defensive coordinator role, a source told ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler on Saturday, confirming an NFL Network report.

Morton would become the second Broncos offensive assistant to leave for an offensive coordinator job since Denver’s season ended. Sources told ESPN’s Courtney Cronin on Sunday that Broncos tight ends coach Declan Doyle is being hired as Johnson’s offensive coordinator on his Bears staff.

The Detroit Lions are reportedly in talks to hire John Morton, currently with the Denver Broncos, as their new offensive coordinator. Sources close to the situation have revealed that Morton is the top candidate for the position and negotiations are underway.

Morton has a wealth of experience in the NFL, having previously served as an offensive coordinator for the New York Jets and as a wide receivers coach for the San Francisco 49ers and New Orleans Saints. His expertise in developing young talent and his innovative offensive schemes make him an attractive choice for the Lions.

If the deal goes through, Morton would be tasked with revamping the Lions’ offense and helping to maximize the potential of quarterback Jared Goff. With his track record of success and ability to adapt to different personnel and systems, Morton could be the missing piece that helps the Lions take their offense to the next level.

Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story as the Lions work towards finalizing their coaching staff for the upcoming season.

  • Yet another Broncos coach is a candidate to leave this offseason

Sean Payton built quite the staff with the Denver Broncos.

Now other clubs are starting to poach from that staff.

So far this offseason, the Broncos have lost assistant general manager Darren Mougey to the New York Jets and tight ends coach Declan Doyle to the Chicago Bears. More departures could be on the way.

Denver’s pass game coordinator, John Morton, is a “candidate to watch” for the Detroit Lions’ offensive coordinator position, according to a report from NFL Network (via Lions Wire).

Morton, 55, previously served as a senior offensive assistant with the Lions in 2022 before joining the Broncos in 2023, so he’s familiar with Detroit. Morton has already interviewed with Dan Campbell for the Lions’ OC position, according to NFLN.

Morton could be the third staff member to leave Denver in 2025, and he might not be the last. Three teams are interested in Broncos special teams coach Chris Banjo, and clubs have also interviewed defensive coordinator Vance Joseph and executive David Shaw this offseason.

We will track all of Denver’s coaching staff developments on Broncos Wire.

This article originally appeared on Broncos Wire: Yet another Broncos coach is a candidate to leave this offseason

It seems like the coaching carousel never stops spinning for the Denver Broncos. The latest coach to be rumored as a candidate to leave this offseason is none other than defensive coordinator Ed Donatell.

Donatell, who has been with the Broncos since 2019, has reportedly drawn interest from multiple teams looking to fill their head coaching vacancies. With the Broncos finishing the season with a disappointing 7-10 record and missing the playoffs for the sixth straight year, it’s no surprise that Donatell’s name is being thrown into the mix.

While Donatell has been instrumental in shaping the Broncos defense over the past few years, it’s unclear if he will ultimately choose to leave for a head coaching opportunity or if the Broncos will try to retain him with a promotion or extension.

Regardless of what happens, it’s just another chapter in the ongoing saga of turnover within the Broncos coaching staff. Only time will tell if Donatell will be the next to depart from Denver, but one thing is for sure – the Broncos will have some big decisions to make this offseason.

  • Report: Broncos pass game coordinator emerged as a candidate to watch for the Lions offensive coordinator job

According to NFL Network’s lead league insider Ian Rapoport, Denver Broncos pass game coordinator John Morton has emerged as a candidate to watch for the Lions offensive coordinator position.

Broncos coaches and executives have been popular this offseason amongst other teams, and now we can add John Morton to that growing list. With former Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson getting the Chicago Bear head coaching job, head coach Dan Campbell is looking for his replacement. Whoever that is, they have big shoes to fill as Johnson had the Lions’ offense playing like a top offense all season long.

Morton is a 55-year-old coach who is currently the Denver Broncos pass game coordinator under head coach Sean Payton. His coaching career started back in 1998 when he became an offensive assistant for the Oakland Raiders. He was with them through the 2004 season when he became their tight end’s coach. He would spend the next season as the passing game/wide receiver’s coach for the University of San Diego before returning to the NFL in 2006 as the Saints passing game coordinator. He would go back to college a year later as USC’s passing game coordinator/wide receivers coach and eventually their offensive coordinator from 2007 through 2010. He would then return to the NFL as the 49ers‘ wide receivers coach from 2011 to 2014, go back to the Saints as their wide receivers coach from 2015 to 2016, before becoming the New York Jets offensive coordinator in 2017. A year later, he would go back to the Raiders as a Senior Offensive assistant from 2019 through 2021 before joining Dan Campbell’s staff in 2022 as a senior offensive assistant. He would then join Sean Payton’s staff in 2023 as the Broncos pass game coordinator. Now, he appears to be a top candidate to be Dan Campbell’s offensive coordinator in 2025.

Morton joins a growing list of Broncos coaches and executives who have been popular amongst other teams during this hiring cycle. Defensive Coordinator Vance Joseph interviewed with the Jets and Raiders for their head coaching positions, front office member David Shaw interviewed for multiple head coaching jobs, assistant GM Darren Mougey was hired as the New York Jets General Manager, tight ends coach Declan Doyle was hired as the Bears offensive coordinator, and now Morton is a top candidate to be the Lions offensive coordinator. Sean Payton’s coaching tree already includes the likes of Dan Campbell, Joe Lombardi, Aaron Glenn, Joe Brady, and Dennis Allen and is continuing to grow. Quarterback’s coach Davis Webb is expected to receive interest this year or next year while DB’s coach Jim Leonhard could as well.

I would expect more Broncos coaches to get more looks from other teams as these newly hired coaches begin to assemble their coaching staffs.

According to recent reports, the Detroit Lions are eyeing up Denver Broncos pass game coordinator, Klint Kubiak, as a potential candidate for their vacant offensive coordinator position. Kubiak, the son of former NFL head coach Gary Kubiak, has been instrumental in the development of the Broncos’ passing game this season.

With the Lions looking to revamp their offense and maximize the potential of quarterback Jared Goff, Kubiak’s innovative play-calling and strategic approach could be a perfect fit for the team. Known for his ability to create mismatches and exploit defenses, Kubiak could bring a fresh perspective to the Lions’ offense and help elevate their performance on the field.

While nothing is set in stone yet, Kubiak’s emergence as a candidate to watch for the Lions offensive coordinator job is certainly something to keep an eye on. Stay tuned for further updates as the team continues their search for the right fit to lead their offense in the upcoming season.

  • Sources — Darren Mougey leaving Broncos to be GM of Jets

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. — Completing their leadership overhaul in less than a week, the New York Jets agreed to terms Saturday with Darren Mougey to be their general manager, sources told ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Mougey, a longtime Denver Broncos scout and executive who became their assistant GM in 2022, will team with newly hired coach Aaron Glenn — a brain trust that has no previous experience in their new positions. It’s a bold pairing by the Jets, who are trying to reboot after a turmoil-filled season and a 14-year playoff drought.

At 39, Mougey is the third-youngest GM in the NFL and 2 years younger than quarterback Aaron Rodgers, whose future with the Jets will be determined in the coming weeks. Mougey is expected to have a traditional GM role, meaning he has final say on personnel decisions and control of the 53-man roster. Glenn, who was involved in the hiring, will have significant input.

Mougey replaces Joe Douglas, who was fired Nov. 19 after five-plus seasons on the job. Under Douglas’ stewardship, the Jets were 30-64. Phil Savage served as the interim GM.

The Jets took an unconventional route by hiring their coach before the GM. A dual announcement was expected Wednesday, when Glenn’s deal was finalized, but things changed.

Washington Commanders assistant GM Lance Newmark appeared to be the frontrunner, as he was the first candidate to receive a second interview. He and Glenn seemed to be a natural fit, considering they worked with the Detroit Lions from 2021 to 2023. Both interviewed Tuesday at the team facility, but the Jets decided to meet again with Mougey and Cincinnati Bengals senior personnel executive Trey Brown.

Mougey and Glenn, 52, have no previous working relationship, only an indirect connection — Broncos coach Sean Payton. Glenn was on Payton’s New Orleans Saints coaching staff, and they have remained close. Glenn participated in in-person interviews with Mougey and Brown on Thursday at the Jets’ facility.

All told, the Jets interviewed 15 candidates, including five with previous GM experience.

Ironically, one of their former GMs — Mike Tannenbaum — was involved in the search. Tannenbaum founded The 33rd Team, a media and technology company that was retained by the Jets to compile and vet candidates. Former Minnesota Vikings GM Rick Spielman also assisted.

Tannenbaum, now an ESPN analyst, was 36 when the Jets hired him in 2006. Mougey is their youngest GM since. The only current GMs younger than him are the Cleveland Browns’ Andrew Berry (37) and the Chicago Bears’ Ryan Poles (39), according to ESPN Research.

Mougey, who is 6-foot-4, played college ball at San Diego State. He began as a quarterback, playing behind current Minnesota Vikings coach Kevin O’Connell, but was switched to wide receiver. He had brief stops with the Atlanta Falcons and Arizona Cardinals, but never made a regular-season roster.

He got into scouting with the Broncos, working his way up from a scouting intern (2012). He was hired by Broncos legend John Elway and went from area scout (2015-19) to assistant director of college scouting (2020) to director of player personnel (2021) to his most recent role as the assistant GM.

Mougey worked for three ownership groups and two general managers, experiencing the ultimate high (a Super Bowl championship after the 2015 season) and the low of an eight-year playoff drought that ended this season under the Payton rebuild.

Mougey worked alongside current GM George Paton, who in 2022 made the ill-fated Russell Wilson trade — regarded as one of the worst in recent NFL history. The Broncos surrendered a huge package of draft picks, including two first rounders, for the fading star, who lasted only two seasons in Denver and left a massive cap hit.

On the positive side, Mougey was part of a front office that has drafted well in recent years. From 2021 to 2023, it selected four players on the current All-Pro team — cornerback Patrick Surtain II, guard Quinn Meinerz, kick returner Marvin Mims Jr. and edge rusher Nick Bonitto (second team). Quarterback Bo Nix, Denver’s 2024 first-round pick, enjoyed a promising rookie year.

Mougey walks into a massive job, one that will require a culture overhaul. The Jets haven’t produced a winning season since 2015 and their playoff slump is the longest in North American sports. Since 2015, they’ve gone through four coaches — Todd Bowles, Adam Gase, Robert Saleh and interim Jeff Ulbrich, who replaced the fired Saleh on Oct. 8.

There are some building blocks on the roster, but Brown will have to decide on Rodgers and formulate a long-term plan at quarterback. Another pressing issue is the future of wide receiver Garrett Wilson, who is eligible for a contract extension and could request a trade.

The Jets own the No. 7 overall pick in the draft, and have a total of eight picks, but they have only $25 million in cap room, according to Roster Management. The have 23 unrestricted free agents, including six starters. It will take some creative cap management to improve the roster under these restrictions.

Sources have confirmed that Darren Mougey, who has been with the Denver Broncos for the past five years, will be leaving the organization to become the new general manager of the New York Jets. This news comes as a surprise to many, as Mougey has been an integral part of the Broncos’ front office and has been instrumental in their recent success.

According to sources close to the situation, Mougey was offered the opportunity to lead the Jets’ front office and build a winning team from the ground up. His extensive experience with player personnel and salary cap management made him an attractive candidate for the position.

While the Broncos will undoubtedly miss Mougey’s expertise and leadership, the Jets are excited to welcome him to their organization. It will be interesting to see how Mougey’s vision and approach to team building will shape the future of the Jets franchise. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.

  • Key Bills’ defensive starter clears concussion protocol during Broncos game

The Buffalo Bills are ready to take their first steps towards earning a trip to New Orleans this February. Buffalo is hosting Denver for a Wild Card matchup on Sunday, with the Bills heavily favored to win. The Bills have already overcome some adversity during the early stretches of the game.

Bills cornerback Taron Johnson left the game during the first quarter to be evaluated for a head injury. Thankfully, it appears that Johnson avoided a serious injury.

Johnson has cleared concussion protocol, per the team’s social media. He is questionable to return with a neck injury.

This is big news for the Bills on defense. Johnson is one of the most important pieces of Buffalo’s secondary. He is sticky in coverage and regularly plays in the slot, allowing him to get active in the running game as well.

Johnson returned to the field for Buffalo’s next defensive possession in the second quarter.

Johnson being questionable to return did not mean he is guaranteed to play during the rest of the game. However, it does confirm that the early hit he suffered did not cause a serious enough injury to rule him out for the rest of the game.

It will be interesting to see how Buffalo treats his injury throughout the final three quarters of the game.

Bo Nix on facing Bills’ Von Miller in playoffs

Buffalo Bills’ defensive starter, Tremaine Edmunds, has cleared concussion protocol during their game against the Denver Broncos. This is great news for the Bills as they continue their playoff push. Edmunds is a key player on the defense and his presence on the field will be crucial in the team’s pursuit of a postseason berth. Fans can breathe a sigh of relief knowing that one of their top defensive players is back in action. Let’s hope he can make a big impact in the remaining games of the season. #GoBills #DefenseStrong

    What to Know

We’ve got another exciting Mountain West matchup on schedule as the Boise State Broncos and the New Mexico Lobos are set to tip at 11:00 p.m. ET on Friday at The Pit. The Broncos are strutting in with some offensive muscle as they’ve averaged 78.7 points per game this season.

Boise State took a loss when they played away from home on Saturday, but their home fans gave them all the motivation they needed on Tuesday. They took their game with ease, bagging a 96-55 victory over Wyoming. The Broncos have made a habit of sweeping their opponents off the court, having now won six contests by 22 points or more this season.

Alvaro Cardenas was the offensive standout of the match as he scored 14 points in addition to eight assists and four steals. Another player making a difference was Andrew Meadow, who went 5 for 7 en route to 18 points.

Meanwhile, after a string of seven wins, New Mexico’s good fortune finally ran out on Tuesday. They lost 71-70 to San Jose State on a last-minute jump shot From Latrell Davis. The Lobos were up 22-9 in the first but couldn’t hold on to the lead.

Despite the loss, New Mexico had strong showings from Nelly Junior Joseph, who went 7 for 10 en route to 20 points plus six rebounds, and Donovan Dent, who posted 17 points along with five assists. Junior Joseph’s performance made up for a slower matchup against San Diego State on Saturday.

Boise State is on a roll lately: they’ve won seven of their last nine games, which provided a nice bump to their 13-5 record this season. As for New Mexico, their defeat ended a three-game streak of away wins and brought them to 14-4.

Some high-performance offense is likely on the agenda as the two teams are some of the highest scoring teams in the league. Boise State hasn’t had any problem running up the score this season, having averaged 78.7 points per game. However, it’s not like New Mexico struggles in that department as they’ve been averaging 83.2. With both teams so easily able to put up points, the only question left is who can run the score up higher.

Boise State is hoping to beat the odds on Friday, as the experts think they’re headed for a loss. They might be worth a quick bet since they’ve covered the spread the last three times they’ve played.

    Odds

New Mexico is a 3.5-point favorite against Boise State, according to the latest college basketball odds.

The oddsmakers were right in line with the betting community on this one, as the game opened as a 3.5-point spread, and stayed right there.

  • NFL fines Bengals and Broncos players for actions in Week 17 game.

NFL fines Bengals and Broncos players for actions in Week 17 game.

CINCINNATI – Cornerback Josh Newton is the latest Cincinnati Bengals player to receive a fine for a violent gesture.

The NFL fined Newton $4,885 for “unsportsmanlike conduct (violent gesture)” in the first quarter of last Saturday’s 30-24 overtime win against the Denver Broncos.

The gesture occurred after Denver quarterback Bo Nix threw and incomplete pass to wide receiver Courtland Sutton in the end zone with Newton in coverage.

Neither the game broadcast nor the All 22 film shows the gesture in question, as Newton celebrated the third down stop with teammate Geno Stone before the video cuts to the next play.

Cornerback Cam Taylor-Britt was fined $9,019 for a violent gesture in the Bengals’ Week 15 win at Tennessee.

Wide receiver Andrei Iosivas was fined earlier this season for a violent gesture but won his appeal and the league fully rescinded the fine.

Wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase also was fined for a violent gesture in Week 5, and that discipline stood after an appeal hearing.

Also in Saturday’s game, Denver safety P.J. Locke was fined $13,972 for “unnecessary roughness (use of helmet).”

The play occurred in the third quarter when Locke led with his helmet and struck Bengals tight end Mike Gesicki in the helmet along the sideline on an 8-yard gain.

The NFL has handed down fines to several players from the Cincinnati Bengals and Denver Broncos following their Week 17 matchup. The fines stem from various actions that occurred during the game, including unnecessary roughness, unsportsmanlike conduct, and other violations of league rules.

Among those fined were Bengals linebacker Vontaze Burfict and Broncos linebacker Todd Davis, who were both penalized for late hits on opposing players. Additionally, Bengals cornerback Dre Kirkpatrick and Broncos wide receiver Emmanuel Sanders were fined for engaging in a verbal altercation on the field.

The NFL has made it clear that player safety and sportsmanship are top priorities, and they will continue to take disciplinary action when necessary. Both teams have been reminded of the importance of upholding the league’s standards of conduct and are expected to adhere to them moving forward.

“Son of a Saint is doing a mentor day with many amazing young men who, unfortunately, have lost a father,” Tebow explained. “Son of a Saint mentors them and gives them many amazing opportunities. “I’m just so proud of all these young men for not just what they do on the field but, more importantly, who they are and how they serve off the field. I love that Allstate allows us to celebrate these young men as members of the Good Works team and the partnership of people coming together, from AFCA to the Wuerffel Trophy and the Wuerffel Foundation to so many people.”

Tebow was the starting quarterback for most of the 2011 season, leading the underdog Broncos to the postseason. Throughout the year, he spoke about the team’s unity as essential to their success and the AFC West division title.

“Brotherhood and belief that that team was just a special team that probably wasn’t, in every way, the best team, meaning, did we have all the perfect pieces? Maybe not, but, man, that was a close team, that team that never quit,” said Tebow. “It was a team that, like people throw the word brotherhood a lot like you really feel like it was.

“One of the coolest things is when you watch the touchdown to DT (Demaryius Thomas) to win the game; if you look at the wide copy, you’ll see Champ Bailey, one of the best cornerbacks ever to do it, is on the sideline running almost as fast as DT like, that’s a however, many year vet that invested in overtime.”

Tebow completed 10 passes for a career-high 316 yards and two touchdowns, including the famous 80-yard touchdown to Demaryius Thomas on the first play of overtime.

“It was the veterans. We had Brian Dawkins, Champ Bailey, and Elvis Dumerville,” Tebow explained. “Then. you had the young guys, Von Miller, DT, and Eric Decker. Still, the relationship, camaraderie, and Never Say Die attitude, I think it was just so special. That’s what I think I’ll always take away. I think that what made us different was that sense of belief together, and we’re not going to quit.”
