How Bruce Thompson, man behind Tank Dell Dreamathon shirts, wanted to ‘create a moment for one of my brothers’
HOUSTON – When Bruce Thompson saw Texans wide receiver Tank Dell suffer a devastating knee injury against the Kansas City Chiefs, his heart was hurting.
Thompson, a former New Orleans Saints tryout wide receiver who played collegiately at Langston University, a historically black college in Oklahoma, has been friends with Dell and trained alongside him since the wide receiver was starring for the University of Houston.
“Me and Tank are close,” said Thompson, the owner and founder of Dreamathon, a company that makes vintage-inspired graphic T-shirts for several NFL athletes, told KPRC 2. “I’ve been knowing him since college. Then, he used to always wear Dreamathon shirts at practice. He’s been rocking my stuff and really supporting me.”
After the injury, a dislocated knee, a torn anterior cruciate ligament, torn medial collateral ligament, torn lateral collateral ligament and meniscus damage, Thompson wanted to do something special to pay tribute to Dell.
When Texans safety M.J. Stewart approached him about designing shirts for the entire team, Thompson jumped on the opportunity and turned them around in days.
And the players rocked the Dell shirts in an emotional, trending moment before their 32-12 AFC South wild-card round victory over the Los Angeles Chargers.
“Man, honestly, it was a lot of gratitude,” said Thompson, whose shirts are available at dreamathon.co. “It made me proud I was able to create a moment for one of my brothers. You always want to uplift somebody that you’ve actually put blood, sweat and tears into. He told me, ‘I appreciate you, brother.’”
Earlier this season, Thompson designed Stefon Diggs shirts. Diggs is out for the season with a torn anterior cruciate ligament.
The shirts were a hit with the players, including quarterback C.J. Stroud. They struck an emotional chord with Stroud, who was visibly distraught when Dell badly injured his knee in December.
“I like that, but it reminds me of the funeral shirts and it is kind of what we do back home,” said Stroud, who’s from California. “I would rather be there for somebody than wear a T-shirt, but I don’t mind wearing the shirt. Our equipment staff gets them for us. It is a good way to remember somebody that year, but I don’t want them to think they just own a shirt.
“I actually do check up on my guys who aren’t playing anymore, care for them more than just wearing a t-shirt. They are dope, though. I hope they liked it, but I don’t know if I would want to be up on a shirt. I think it is amazing that we do that and everyone shows respect to the person that is out for the rest of the year, but thank God they are not on the other side.”
Texans coach DeMeco Ryans wants a Dell shirt. Thompson said he’s got the NFL coach covered.
“Tank means a lot to our team,” Ryans said. “As you see with the guys, seeing him on the sideline, seeing the T-shirts, it’s real love. And everybody loves Tank. And I love Tank. We miss him. We miss Stef. We miss all of our guys that can’t be out there battling with us because we truly care for one another. So, it’s cool to see the shirts. They didn’t give me a shirt, though. What’s going on?have a lot of love for Tank and we’re wishing him a speedy recovery.”
After starting Dreamathon three years ago, Thompson, who has also played for the Orlando Guardians in the United Football League, has seen the popularity of the shirts grow and grow.
The Minnesota Vikings were about to play the Baltimore Ravens on Nov. 7, 2021 when Vikings Pro Bowl wide receiver Justin Jefferson and cornerback Cam Dantzler were wearing ‘Free Odell’ shirts printed across the front after Odell Beckham Jr. had been released by the Cleveland Browns.
Thompson wanted to show love for OBJ, a player he’s been friends with since high school and calls a brother.
Among the viral moments Thompson has been a part of: shirts for Beckham, Jr., wearing a Juice Landry shirt to honor his former teammate and other apparel, Von Miller donning a special Bruce Smith-inspired Buffalo Bills shirt, shirts in memory of the late Kobe Bryant, a Deion Sanders shirt sported by Heisman Trophy winner Travis Hunter, a shirt worn by Justin Jefferson honoring the late Vikings coach Bud Grant, a Tupac Shakur shirt worn by Deebo Samuel along with Tom Brady wearing an Antonio Brown shirt, in better, calmer times.
Jefferson has worn shirts celebrating LeBron James, Tre’Davious White and several others.
“I started my brand while finishing my degree and was still having workouts, trying out for teams,” Thompson said. “My grandmother passed away from COVID-19 when I started Dreamathon. All of a sudden, it was going viral on ESPN. I was in the cafeteria eating and doing my homework on a Sunday morning when the first shirt went viral with Odell. That was 2021. I’m proud of what I’ve been able to accomplish. It’s all about hard work and sacrifice and the importance of authentic connections and friendships. It’s all about love. The players love the movement.
Born in New Orleans, Thompson moved to Texas with his mother after Hurricane Katrina hit their hometown. He attended middle school in Texas before returning to New Orleans and earning a scholarship to college. Beckham became a strong mentor. The rest is history, including modeling for several clothing lines like Fashion Nova.
“OBJ really guided me, directed me, motivated me and taught me the right things to do,” Thompson said. “He would tell me, ‘Make a play so loud I can’t hear you talk.’ I always manifest and dream big. I always believed and had this vision. Now, it’s all become a reality and I couldn’t be more grateful. Dreamathon is changing the world. I couldn’t be happier.”

The Los Angeles County district attorney met with the Menendez brothers‘ relatives on Friday, but said he is still reviewing the facts in the case and hasn’t yet decided if he’s in support of the brothers’ bid for freedom.
LA County District Attorney Nathan Hochman said that when he came into office on Dec. 3, he promised to review all the facts in Erik and Lyle Menendez’s case. He said that effort has involved reviewing thousands of pages of confidential prison records, trial transcripts, speaking to all the prosecutors and defense attorneys involved and reviewing court filings.
Hochman said that effort continues, noting that he’s not finished reviewing all the prison files from the brothers’ decades behind bars.
In these booking photos taken Oct. 10, 2024, Erik and Lyle Menendez are shown.

Over 20 Menendez relatives met with Hochman on Friday in their continued push for the brothers’ release from prison.
Hochman described the conversation as “very productive” and “in some ways, an informal, off-the-record discussion.”
“They gave me all their thoughts about what should happen, their experiences they wanted to share, the ultimate direction they wanted this case to go,” he said.
Hochman did not reveal the details of the conversation.
In a brief address to reporters, Anamaria Baralt, cousin of the Menendez brothers, spoke out after the family’s meeting with Hochman Friday afternoon.
“We did have a meeting with the district attorney and we’re grateful for his time,” she said in a statement. “I want to reiterate our position as a family and as the victims’ families that this 35-year process has been incredibly traumatizing for us as I’m sure that you can all imagine.”
She said she the family was hoping to see an immediate release of the brothers, saying that going before a parole board “will only serve to re-traumatize us.”
The previous district attorney, George Gascón, announced in October that he was recommending the brothers’ sentence of life without the possibility of parole be removed, and they should instead be sentenced for murder, which would be a sentence of 50 years to life. Because both brothers were under 26 at the time of the crimes, they would be eligible for parole immediately with the new sentence.
The DA’s office said its resentencing recommendations take into account many factors, including rehabilitation in prison, and abuse or trauma that contributed to the crime. Gascón praised the work Lyle and Erik Menendez did behind bars to rehabilitate themselves and help other inmates.
Weeks after Gascón’s announcement, he lost his race for reelection to Hochman.
Erik and Lyle Menendez next appear in court for a hearing in the resentencing case on Jan. 30 and Jan. 31.
This comes on the heels of an attorney for the brothers petitioning to move the case from the DA’s office to the California Attorney General’s Office, claiming a conflict of interest between Hochman and Kathleen Cady, whom Hoch just appointed director of the department’s Bureau of Victim Services.
Cady recently resigned as attorney for Milton Anderson, the one Menendez relative who has been pushing to keep the brothers in prison.
Hochman said Friday that Cady is “walled off from the Menendez case.”

Lyle and Erik Menendez were convicted in 1996 of the 1989 murders of their parents, Jose and Kitty Menendez, who they gunned down in the family’s Beverly Hills home.
The defense claimed the brothers acted in self-defense after enduring years of sexual abuse by their father, but prosecutors alleged they killed for money.
Lyle and Erik Menendez, who were 21 and 18 at the time of the crime, respectively, were sentenced to two consecutive life prison terms without the possibility of parole.
Besides the resentencing, the brothers have been pursuing two other paths to freedom.
In 2023, the brothers filed a habeas corpus petition for a review of new evidence not presented at trial.
They also submitted a request for clemency to California Gov. Gavin Newsom. In November, Newsom said he’d defer to Hochman’s “review and analysis of the Menendez case prior to making any clemency decisions.”
ABC News’ Amanda M. Morris contributed to this report.
The Menendez brothers, Lyle and Erik, have been making headlines once again as the District Attorney has had a ‘productive’ meeting with the family regarding their case. However, a decision has not yet been made on whether or not to grant the brothers a new trial. The Menendez brothers were convicted in 1996 for the brutal murder of their parents, Jose and Kitty Menendez, in their Beverly Hills mansion in 1989. The brothers claimed they acted in self-defense after years of abuse from their parents.
The recent meeting between the District Attorney and the Menendez family comes as the brothers’ legal team continues to push for a new trial, citing new evidence and claims of ineffective counsel during their original trial. The DA has not yet made a decision on whether or not to grant a new trial, but the meeting was described as ‘productive’ by both parties.
As the case continues to unfold, the Menendez brothers remain incarcerated, serving life sentences without the possibility of parole. The outcome of the meeting and any potential decision by the DA will undoubtedly have a significant impact on the future of the brothers’ case. Stay tuned for further updates on this ongoing legal saga.

LOS ANGELES (KABC) — A family-led coalition advocating for the resentencing of Erik and Lyle Menendez will be meeting with Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman on Friday.
According to a statement released by the Justice for Erik and Lyle Coalition, the meeting will include more than 20 members of Jose and Kitty Menendez’s family who fully support a resentencing process that “reflects Erik and Lyle’s abuse, trauma, and demonstrated rehabilitation over the last 35 years.”
“As we prepare to meet with DA Hochman, our family is hopeful for an open and fair discussion,” read the statement. “Despite the abuse they endured as children and the unfairness of their current sentence, Erik and Lyle Menendez have spent the last three decades taking responsibility for their actions and contributing positively to their community through leadership and rehabilitation. During our meeting with DA Hochman, we look forward to sharing our perspective on Erik and Lyle’s immense personal growth over the last 35 years, and the ways in which we plan to support them in their next chapters. We hope that this meeting will put us a step closer to spending next Christmas reunited as a family.”

Hochman has told ABC News that he plans to review all the evidence in the brothers’ case.
In 1989, Lyle and Erik – who were 21 and 18 at the time – fatally shot their parents in the family’s Beverly Hills home.
The defense claimed the brothers acted in self-defense after enduring years of sexual abuse by their father, but prosecutors alleged they killed for money.
The first trial, which had separate juries for each brother, ended in mistrials.
In 1996, after the second trial — during which the judge barred much of the sex abuse evidence — the brothers were convicted and both sentenced to two consecutive terms of life without parole.
Last month, Bryan Freedman, the lawyer representing 24 relatives who support the immediate release of the brothers, said he intends to petition the Los Angeles Superior Court to transfer the case to the California Attorney General’s Office.
He claimed there’s a conflict of interest between Hochman and Kathleen Cady, a close ally and prominent booster of Hochman who was recently named the DA’s director of the Bureau of Victims Services.
Previously, Cady served as the attorney for Milton Andersen, the brother of Kitty Menendez, who pushed for the continued incarceration of the brothers.
She has resigned from that role.
If granted, Freedman and the family believe California Attorney General Rob Bonta is likely to be far more supportive of the brothers’ release efforts than Hochman.
Freedman recently sat down with ABC News Chief National Correspondent Matt Gutman for an exclusive interview with “Good Morning America” and said the brothers’ family members have become increasingly concerned, accusing Hochman of “playing politics.”
“He should use that time wisely … meet with the family members,” Freedman said during the interview. “The family members are victims. They suffered loss. They have also seen the rehabilitation. They are the best people to talk to.”
In November 2024, a judge pushed back a scheduled hearing regarding the brothers’ resentencing recommendation from Dec. 11 to Jan. 30 and Jan. 31. The judge said he needs time to go through 17 boxes of files on the case and said he wanted to give Hochman ample time to get up to speed.
Hochman said he would speak with witnesses before weighing in the case. So far, according to ABC News, he has already taken the two deputy district attorneys who prepared the brothers’ resentencing off the case.
“It tells me that there’s a chance that the DA is playing politics,” said Freedman. “That politics are coming into play here, and it concerns me that what’s happening is there are favors being performed.”
ABC News also learned that Hochman’s first outreach to the Menendez family was to the single family member opposed to the release of the brothers: Andersen.
“It doesn’t feel good,” said Freedman when asked about what kind of message that sends.
Hochman recently addressed the claim that the state did not recognize the alleged sexual abuse that the young boys endured at the hands of their father, telling Deadline, “Erik Menendez was able to testify in great detail about all the sexual abuse he experienced. He was even able to testify about sexual abuse that Lyle experienced.”
“Do you feel that was the case?” Gutman asked Freedman about that remark.
“The evidence shows it wasn’t the case,” responded Freedman. “You have a number of witnesses, a number of family members, who weren’t able to testify about the abuse that they saw.”
Hochman has also said he’ll take a close look at the brother’s rehabilitation in prison. He has hinted that he might separate their resentencing cases, which could mean that Erik could be released before Lyle, who has a couple of minor infractions.

Supporters of resentencing for Menendez brothers are set to meet with the Los Angeles County District Attorney on Friday in hopes of securing a new trial for the infamous siblings. The Menendez brothers, Erik and Lyle, were convicted in 1996 for the brutal murders of their parents, but have recently gained support for a resentencing due to new evidence and changing attitudes towards juvenile offenders. The meeting comes after years of advocacy and legal battles to have the brothers’ case reconsidered. Supporters argue that the Menendez brothers were abused and traumatized by their parents, leading to their violent actions. They believe that a resentencing would provide a more just outcome for the brothers, who were sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
The meeting with the LA County DA is a crucial step in the fight for a new trial for the Menendez brothers. Supporters are hopeful that the DA will consider the new evidence and circumstances surrounding the case, and ultimately grant the brothers a chance at a fair resentencing.
Stay tuned for updates on this developing story as supporters continue to push for justice for the Menendez brothers. #ResentencingForMenendezBrothers #JusticeForErikAndLyle

Drake Shares New Freestyle Produced By Conductor Williams, Addresses Disloyalty From “Brothers”
The rap beef heard around the world came to a close last summer, and fans have eagerly been waiting to see what Drake’s next moves would be. On Friday (Jan. 3), a new freestyle by the Toronto native surfaced, featuring him rapping with no hook over a beat produced by Conductor Williams.
The three-minute clip was uploaded within a longer video on the beatmaker’s YouTube channel for his “Signature Blends” series. It’s worth nothing the video was no longer available shortly after it was revealed, and he confirmed in an Instagram caption that the song will not be released on DSPs.
Over the mellow instrumental, Drake addresses the betrayal he felt watching his peers support his opponent, rapping, “The world fell in love with the gimmicks, even my brothers got tickets/ Seemed like they loved every minute, just know this sh*t is personal to us, and it wasn’t just business.”
The “tickets” could be referring to K. Dot’s The Pop Out: Ken & Friends event June 19, 2024, where Kendrick performed “Not Like Us” six times in a row with former Drake associates like DeMar DeRozan and LeBron James in attendance. It could also be a reference to Kendrick Lamar’s recently announced stadium tour with SZA, the Grand National Tour.
As rap fans got their hands on the freestyle, they immediately began dissecting the lyrics. One of the biggest theories is that a lot of the bars are about LeBron James. The song is allegedly called “Fighting Irish Freestyle,” which would be a reference to where the NBA legend played high school basketball.
Elsewhere in the song, Drake continues expressing his feelings about the lack of loyalty he saw last year from his circle. “Sure convinced the gang this shit is rooted in love when it isn’t… I guess now you boys got to abandon your summer tradition/ Cold shoulders I gave in the Hamptons, it come with the distance
Figured we was always gon’ be close, like ovens and kitchens/ I was sadly mistaken, the loyalty wasn’t a given.”Towards the end of the record, Drake raps, “I don’t have a drinkin’ problem, I got a subtle addiction/ I got my father’s habits and I got my mother’s permission.” Fans think this is a reference to the “drinking problem” claim made by Kendrick on “meet the grahams.”
Conductor Williams has an extensive catalogue that includes producer credits for J. Cole, Westside Gunn, Tyler, The Creator, and more. On his channel, he breaks down his process behind the creation of his beats. Check out his episode about making “Stories About My Brother” by Drake below and the new freestyle above.

The emotional track showcases Drake’s raw talent and ability to turn personal struggles into powerful music.
Fans are praising Drake for his honesty and vulnerability in the freestyle, with many taking to social media to express their support for the rapper. It’s clear that Drake isn’t afraid to address the tough topics in his music, and his latest release is no exception.

Wayne Osmond, of the Osmond Brothers, has died at 73 – Deseret News
Wayne Osmond, whose baritone voice helped create the tight, four-part harmonies of the Osmond Brothers, has died at at the age of 73.
“Wayne Osmond, beloved husband and father, passed away peacefully last night surrounded by his loving wife and five children,” his family shared in a statement. “His legacy of faith, music, love, and laughter have influenced the lives of many people around the world. He would want everyone to know that the gospel of Jesus Christ is true, that families are forever, and that banana splits are the best dessert. We love him and will miss him dearly.”
The rise of the Osmond Brothers
Long before there was Donny and Marie, or the superstardom of The Osmonds in the 1970s — when the brothers performed on the same stage as Elvis at The Hilton in Las Vegas — there were the Osmond Brothers, a barbershop quartet-style act that had its unofficial start with a performance of “Oh Dear Lord in Heaven” for their Latter-day Saint church congregation in Ogden, Utah, as the Deseret News reported.
Wayne Osmond was 6.
The original Osmond Brothers, from left, Alan, Jay, Merrill and Wayne perform Saturday, Oct. 13, 2018, at Blaisdell Arena in Honolulu. | Jay Osmond The string of compliments that came from that performance led parents George and Olive Osmond to think their sons could perhaps help pay for hearing aids for their two oldest children, Tom and Virl. So George Osmond started scheduling performances for his sons, while Olive Osmond worked with them on their harmonies at home.
The Osmond Brothers performed for family and church groups and parties in and around Ogden. Eventually, they got a chance to travel to Los Angeles and audition for “The Lawrence Welk Show” — and then got stood up by Welk, per the Deseret News.
But the trip wasn’t completely in vain. Before returning home, the brothers visited Disneyland, where they gathered a crowd and stopped traffic with their barbershop act. They returned to Disneyland the following year with a performance that caught the eye of Andy Williams’ father.
About five years after their performance in church, the Osmond Brothers were making their debut on “The Andy Williams Show.”
And that was just the beginning.
“We owe them everything,” Marie Osmond previously told the Deseret News. “My brothers are legendary. Go listen to their harmony (from the old days), it’s mind-boggling. I have spent a lifetime studying and learning singing, but I promise you I have never heard anybody sing like my four original brothers.
“My brothers are my heroes,” she continued. “Everything I have learned from a professional standpoint, from having honesty and integrity and doing what’s right, I learned from them. These are strong men, and I love them.”
The Osmond Brothers as boys: Jay, left, Merrill, Wayne, Alan. | Osmond family A man of faith
Throughout his life — even amid the pressures of the entertainment industry that at one point brought severe financial woes upon the Osmonds — Wayne Osmond clung to his faith as a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
The financial setback, when they lost millions of dollars that led the original Osmond Brothers to return to county fairs and corporate retreats to help pay off their debts, “actually made me love my Heavenly Father more because it made me realize money doesn’t do anything; it means nothing,” Wayne Osmond previously told the Deseret News.
Wayne Osmond maintained his values, inspired by his faith, on and off stage.
“You don’t really have those feelings of ‘Well, I’m gonna start swearin’ and drinkin’ Jack Daniels,’” he told the Deseret News during a 2004 interview. “You just don’t even think of going there, basically. It’s just a different value system, that’s all.”
“We’re Latter-day Saints, and we have a very high moral and ethical code that we live by. … It’s not something that’s forced upon us,” he continued. “But when you have certain values that you really like, and you like being part of that organization, then it behooves you to kind of live up to those standards.”
This story will be updated.

New Menendez brothers prosecutor slams ‘meritless’ conflict of interest claim
New Los Angeles District Attorney Nathan Hochman’s office is pushing back against a “meritless” claim of a potential conflict of interest in the Menendez brothers’ case amid reports that their relatives are looking to have their potential resentencing handled by the state attorney general’s office instead of county prosecutors.
“The conflict of interest issue, raised to the media first before it was raised to the District Attorney’s Office, is meritless,” a DA spokesperson told Fox News Digital. “All Menendez victim family members who want the opportunity to personally speak with the District Attorney before any final decisions are made have been invited to do so and these discussions should be completed in the coming weeks.”
Hochman’s predecessor, former DA George Gascon, had allegedly met only with relatives who supported the brothers’ freedom and not their 90-year-old uncle, Milton Andersen. He has opposed any leniency for his nephews, who were convicted of shotgunning their parents, who were Andersen’s sister and brother-in-law, in their Beverly Hills living room in the late 1980s.

Erik and Joseph “Lyle” Menendez snuck up behind their parents, Jose and Mary “Kitty” Menendez, and opened fire on Aug. 20, 1989. The brothers went on a $700,000 spending spree as investigators initially suspected a mob hit, but they were eventually arrested.
Their first trial ended with a hung jury, and they were later convicted and sentenced to life without the possibility of parole – a punishment they are hoping to have reduced under California’s new resentencing law.
Andersen and Kitty’s sister, Joan Andersen VanderMolen, 92, is among two dozen other relatives who support freedom for the brothers. There has also been public support for their release after a series of documentaries explored their claims of child abuse at the hands of their father, a former RCA Records executive.

Their attorney also says new evidence bolsters their case: Roy Rosello, a member of the 1980s boy band Menudo, came forward with his own allegations of abuse against Jose Menendez last year. And a letter, purportedly written by Erik Menendez to his cousin, Andy Cano, eight months before the murders, could support some of the latter’s trial testimony about Jose Menendez. Cano died in 2003, and the letter’s authenticity has been called into question in court filings.

In the final weeks of his term, Gascon pushed for a resentencing that could have led to the brothers’ freedom under a new California law. But he lost in a landslide to Hochman, an independent, who said he would fully review the facts of each brother’s case before taking a stance.
Freedman is claiming there is a conflict of interest because Andersen’s former attorney, Kathleen Cady, has taken a job in Hochman’s office, according to the ABC report.

Cady, who spent decades as a deputy district attorney before becoming a victims’ rights advocate, will become director of the LA County DA’s Bureau of Victim Services on Jan. 6. She declined to comment, citing her new role. She no longer represents Andersen.

The brothers claimed self-defense, arguing they killed their father because they were afraid he would kill them if they planned to expose him as a child molester.
But they also unloaded so many shells into their mother that they had to go outside and get more before finishing her off as she tried to crawl to safety.

Andersen vehemently opposed the idea of reducing their sentences and said in a statement to Fox News Digital this year that he does not believe the brothers’ claims of sexual abuse at the hands of their father.

“Mr. Andersen loved his sister deeply and mourns her every day,” his new attorney, R.J. Dreiling, told Fox News Digital in a statement. “He appreciates that the new DA seems genuinely committed to reviewing all the evidence, listening to everyone impacted by his sister’s murder, and ensuring justice is served.”
A separate habeas corpus petition is making its way through the court, which would be an additional path to freedom for the brothers if successful. That petition relies on the Cano letter and Rosello’s allegations.
Gov. Gavin Newsom also declined to grant a clemency petition for the brothers – at least for now – stating he would defer to Hochman’s pending review of the case before making a decision.
The Menendez brothers case has once again made headlines with a new prosecutor stepping in to handle the ongoing legal battle. The latest development in the high-profile case involves the appointment of a new prosecutor who has wasted no time in addressing the conflict of interest claims made by the defense team.In a recent statement, the new prosecutor has slammed the defense team’s claims as “meritless” and has vowed to continue pursuing justice for the victims in this case. The prosecutor has emphasized that their primary focus is on upholding the law and ensuring that justice is served, regardless of any perceived conflicts of interest.
The Menendez brothers case has been a complex and controversial one from the start, with many twists and turns along the way. With this new prosecutor at the helm, it looks like the legal battle is far from over. Stay tuned for more updates on this ongoing case.

Menendez brothers’ lawyer to seek transfer of case citing conflict of interest | US crime
The public and legal drive to free Erik and Lyle Menendez, the notorious Los Angeles brothers who murdered their parents Jose and Mary “Kitty” Menendez in 1989, has taken a new political turn as they await a resentencing hearing a month into the new year.
An attorney – representing 24 family members of Kitty and Jose Menendez who support the brothers’ release – plans to file a petition to transfer the case from Los Angeles county to the California attorney general’s office, citing a conflict of interest.
The planned petition comes as Los Angeles county is about to see a change in prosecutor. Elections in November saw the defeat of the progressive district attorney George Gascón, who previously said he was open to the brothers’ resentencing.
Lyle and Erik Menendez have been in prison 35 years for the crime with no possibility of parole. They have consistently claimed they killed their parents out of fear for their lives following years of sexual abuse.
Gascón said his office was evaluating whether the brothers should remain in prison for the rest of their lives and that he had a “moral and ethical obligation to review what is being presented”.
An extraordinary push for the Menendez brothers to be freed bubbled up in the wake of a sympathetic Netflix documentary and new claims that Jose Menendez, a former RCA Records executive, had also allegedly abused Roy Rosselló, a former member of the 1980s Puerto Rican boyband Menudo. There was also the recent discovery of a letter from Erik Menendez to a cousin that was penned before the murders in which he discussed his father’s abuse.
The incoming Los Angeles district attorney, Nathan Hochman, is an independent and may be less sympathetic to the Menendez brothers’ resentencing drive. Hochman has said that he plans to review all the evidence in the brothers’ case.
Bryan Freedman, the lawyer representing the 24 relatives who support the brothers’ release, has accused Hochman of “playing politics” with the case.
Freedman told Good Morning America that Hochman should meet with the family members.
“The family members are victims. They suffered loss. They have also seen the rehabilitation. They are the best people to talk to,” Freedman said.
The Menendez brothers have long claimed that they acted in self-defense when they fatally shot their parents as they watched TV in August 1989. But prosecutors claimed the crimes were committed for money after the brothers went on a $700,000 spending spree in the aftermath of their parents’ deaths.
The first trial, which had separate juries for each brother, ended in a mistrial. A second trial in 1996, which took place soon after OJ Simpson’s acquittal for the murder of his ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson and Ronald Goldman, found the brothers guilty. They were sentenced to two consecutive terms of life without parole.
However, some of the evidence that the brothers may have been abused by their father was excluded from that trial, which is the groundwork for the resentencing push. Hochman recently told Deadline: “Erik Menendez was able to testify in great detail about all the sexual abuse he experienced. He was even able to testify about sexual abuse that Lyle experienced.”
But Freedman, the family lawyer, rejected that claim, saying that “[there was] a number of witnesses, a number of family members, who weren’t able to testify about the abuse that they saw”.
Hochman’s office has rejected conflict of interest that might justify moving the resentencing case from county prosecutors to state prosecutors as “meritless”.
“All Menendez victim family members who want the opportunity to personally speak with the district attorney before any final decisions are made have been invited to do so and these discussions should be completed in the coming weeks,” a spokesperson for the district attorney told Fox News Digital.
The Menendez brothers’ high-profile lawyer has announced plans to seek a transfer of their case, citing a conflict of interest. The defense team representing Lyle and Erik Menendez, who were convicted of murdering their parents in 1996, has raised concerns about the judge’s impartiality and fairness in the case. The lawyer, who has been representing the brothers for several years, believes that the judge’s close relationship with the prosecution and bias against the defense could jeopardize the brothers’ right to a fair trial. The defense team plans to file a motion for a change of venue in the hopes of securing a new judge who will approach the case with an unbiased perspective.
The Menendez brothers’ case has been the subject of much controversy and debate since the brothers were first arrested over two decades ago. Many believe that they did not receive a fair trial due to media sensationalism and bias against them. With this latest development, it remains to be seen how the legal proceedings will unfold and whether the brothers will finally receive a fair trial. Stay tuned for more updates on this ongoing case.
