  • Heather Rae El Moussa had ‘reservations’ if husband Tarek and his ex Christina Haack could film ‘The Flip Off.’ It brought them all ‘closer together.’

Fans who’ve followed Christina Haack (formerly Hall) and Tarek El Moussa’s relationship over the past decade will want to tune into HGTV Wednesday night as their new reality show The Flip Off premieres with a bang.

The competition series, which also stars Tarek’s wife, Heather Rae El Moussa, features an emotional sit-down between the exes whose sometimes tumultuous history has been well documented in the press since their 2016 split.

“I think it was extremely healing,” Tarek told Yahoo Entertainment of their on-screen conversation. “Not just for the two of us, but I think for many around the world that have [watched] our story since 2012. So I think a lot of people have been waiting for that moment and it finally came.”

Trusted news and daily delights, right in your inbox

See for yourself — The Yodel is the go-to source for daily news, entertainment and feel-good stories.

The emotional moment occurs when Haack tells Tarek that she and husband Josh Hall are divorcing. Hall appears in the debut episode as the show was meant to be a house-flipping competition between both couples. However, Hall abruptly exited The Flip Off when he and Haack split in July 2024.

In the first episode, appropriately titled “The Breakup,” Tarek comforts Haack as she opens up about the demise of her third marriage.

“I feel like I’m in a tornado all the time and I just can’t get out of it,” Haack cried in the premiere. “Everything since 2016 has been so hard and so horrible.” She also apologized to Tarek, “I’m really sorry for shit too. I really am. I just want you to know.”

Tarek, appearing emotional, replied: “I understand that feeling of being a little bit lost. And I acknowledge that I’m a big part, if not the entire part, of all of this.”

When speaking to Yahoo Entertainment, Haack said the scene was “healing for other people” too.

“I know personally, some people even on set who have been through divorces, who are struggling with their exes and struggling with co-parenting, those people always admired how we co-parented,” she said. “But to see that happen in person, people were crying and they said, ‘This is just inspiring to have this relationship with my ex now.’”

Haack and Tarek share two kids: daughter Taylor, 14, and son Brayden, 9. Although they separated in 2016, they continued to work together on HGTV’s hit Flip or Flop until 2022. However, it wasn’t always smooth sailing — something they poke fun at in The Flip Off‘s first episode as headlines flash of their off-screen disagreements. Now? The two are closer than ever (as friends).

“We’ve had our ups and downs, but filming was never our problem,” Haack explained. “We both knew how to turn it on when it came to the camera, right? I mean, we filmed together for five years post separation [and] divorce.”

Haack said she, Tarek and Heather are “all in a very good spot.”

“I think all of us were a little bit worried how this could affect our relationship. Ultimately, it did bring us closer together,” Haack continued. “Filming a TV show is … not easy. And to have a dynamic with strong personalities like [Heather and Tarek] could be hard. I’ve filmed with a lot of people and it’s not so easy, but filming with Heather was so easy, so fun. And that made the show so much better.”

Heather told Yahoo Entertainment she had no worries about filming The Flip Off with Tarek’s ex-wife but wanted to make sure it wouldn’t mess up their new dynamic.

“I definitely had some reservations … ‘Can they film again together? Do you guys wanna do this? Are we gonna get along? … Is this gonna affect the kids at all in a negative way?’” Heather said. But she agreed The Flip Off “brought us closer together.”

“We got to know each other in a different way, on a deeper level, and I really enjoyed it more than I thought I was going to,” added Heather, who also starred on Selling Sunset. “And I think it was fun for [Christina and Tarek] to come back together and film — there’s no drama right now in our lives. We’re all just having a great time filming this show together.”

The Flip Off premieres Jan. 29 at 8 p.m. ET on HGTV.

Heather Rae El Moussa had ‘reservations’ if husband Tarek and his ex Christina Haack could film ‘The Flip Off.’ It brought them all ‘closer together.’

In a recent interview, Heather Rae El Moussa opened up about her initial reservations when she found out that her husband Tarek El Moussa and his ex-wife Christina Haack would be filming a new show together called ‘The Flip Off.’ Heather admitted that she was unsure how the dynamic would work with all three of them working together, but ultimately, it brought them all closer together.

Despite her concerns, Heather revealed that working on the show with Tarek and Christina actually helped to strengthen their co-parenting relationship and improve their communication. She shared that they were all able to put aside any past issues and focus on their shared goal of creating a successful show.

Heather also admitted that seeing Tarek and Christina work together on ‘The Flip Off’ made her realize the importance of putting their children first and working as a team. She expressed gratitude for the positive impact that the show had on their family dynamic and how it ultimately brought them all closer together.

Overall, Heather’s experience with ‘The Flip Off’ showed her that sometimes stepping out of your comfort zone and facing your reservations can lead to unexpected growth and positive outcomes.

  • 50 Cent will fight suit brought about by man represented by Gloria Allred over alleged SUV assault in LA

50 Cent on Monday addressed a possible legal battle against a photographer who claims the rapper maliciously ordered him to be hit with a car door last fall.

The plaintiff, Guadalupe De Los Santos, filed the lawsuit Monday in Los Angeles Superior Court, TMZ reported after reviewing legal docs in the case, in which De Los Santos has retained famed attorney Gloria Allred, 83.

De Los Santos told the court that the musical artist, 49, told a member of his entourage to topple him from an electric scooter he was riding on last September 11 after the rapper’s book signing at The Grove in Los Angeles.

De Los Santos, who was at the outdoor shopping center to take professional pictures of the rapper – whose hits include Candy Shop, P.I.M.P. and If I Can’t – said he was injured in the incident.

De Los Santos told the court that the exchange with the rapper and his friends took place as he was filming footage after the signing at a red light close to the shopping center.

De Los Santos said in legal documents that the passenger door of the SUV 50 Cent was in abruptly opened, pushing him off the scooter he was riding on.

50 Cent, 49, on Monday addressed a possible legal battle against a photographer (represented by celeb lawyer Gloria Allred, 83) who claims the rapper maliciously ordered him to be hit with a car door last fall

De Los Santos said he was struck on his left side, made contact with the street and was injured, adding that his scooter was also broken in the course of events.

De Los Santos told the court he his injuries left him unable to work for an extended period – and with significant medical expenses – leading him to pursue damages from the rapper.

50 Cent’s legal team Monday evening told TMZ that they had not yet been presented with legal documents connected to the suit – but would aggressively contest it.

‘Mr. Jackson has neither been served with or seen a filed copy of a lawsuit filed by Ms. Allred’s firm,’ a lawyer for the Grammy-winning rap artist told TMZ Monday.

The attorney continued, ‘However, if and when such a frivolous claim is filed and served, rest assured that Mr. Jackson’s legal team will swiftly move to dismiss the matter and seek the maximum costs, fees, sanctions and other remedies that are available under law.

‘Based upon the leaked reports presumably by Ms. Allred, Mr. Jackson is not alleged to be the driver of the vehicle or even the individual who the Plaintiff paparazzi alleges opened the door as he charged a vehicle as it drove away from the bookstore.’

The outlet said it could confirm that the lawsuit ‘was not leaked’ but rather obtained from public records after it was filed.

Dailymail.com has reached out to Allred’s office for further comment on this story.

The Queen, New York native – who defended his critically-panned Las Vegas residency earlier this month – described a shot of himself facing Allred as ‘the moment I realized I don’t like lawyers.’

He said of a potential suit, ‘Gloria you should know better, chase a different ambulance.’

In another post, 50 Cent – who has past been involved in a number of contentious online exchanges – wrote, ‘Gloria you’re not gonna get any money from me that way, but if you call me I’ll take you to dinner. LOL.’

50 Cent, the rapper and actor, will be fighting a lawsuit brought about by a man represented by famed attorney Gloria Allred over an alleged SUV assault in Los Angeles. The incident reportedly took place when 50 Cent, whose real name is Curtis Jackson, was involved in a confrontation with the man outside a nightclub.

According to reports, the man claims that 50 Cent physically assaulted him and caused him to suffer injuries while inside his SUV. The man is seeking damages for the alleged assault and is being represented by Gloria Allred, known for her high-profile cases involving sexual harassment and discrimination.

50 Cent has denied the allegations and has vowed to fight the lawsuit in court. He has maintained his innocence and has stated that he was acting in self-defense during the altercation. The case is expected to be a high-profile legal battle, with both sides preparing to present their evidence and arguments in court.

Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story as 50 Cent prepares to face off against the lawsuit brought by the man represented by Gloria Allred over the alleged SUV assault in LA.

  • Kristen Stewart Just Brought Back Her 2016 Bleach Blonde Hair

I invite you to think back to 2016. The world was rapping along to Hamilton. Beyoncé brought us Lemonade. Everyone everywhere was in the height of their New Girl obsession. Gilmore Girls made its controversial return. And Kristen Stewart was sporting a bleached blonde haircut. Well, prepare yourself for some 2016 flashbacks, because blonde KStew is back.

    Kristen Stewart.

    Backgrid

Kristen Stewart, who has been sporting a dark brunette style for a few months now, debuted her new bleached look during a walk with her fiancée Dylan Meyer in Los Angeles. She styled her new blonde hair in a messy bun with loose, shaggy strands framing her face and forehead. She paired the new ‘do with light-wash jeans and a blue V-neck sweater.

Back in 2014, just a few years before her first bleach blonde era, Stewart opened up about wanting to experiment with new hair colors. “If I wasn’t an actor, I would definitely do things to my hair,” she told Into the Gloss. “I would cut it more, I would dye it more. At some point I want to do a total boy cut, completely—not a pretty, girly version—like a straight up James Dean haircut.”

Then, in 2016, she told Today about her decision to go blonde. “I haven’t acted in a movie in close to a year and…I’m constantly preserving my physicality and staying neutral.” When she found herself with some time off before her next shoot, she thought, “You know what, I can do whatever I want.”

Stewart is currently in pre-production for two projects—’80s vampire thriller Flesh of the Gods and astronaut biopic series The Challenger. So, who knows, perhaps she had just enough of a break to warrant a major hair transformation in between projects.

Kristen Stewart Just Brought Back Her 2016 Bleach Blonde Hair

Kristen Stewart is known for her ever-changing hairstyles, and her latest look is giving us major nostalgia. The actress recently debuted a return to her iconic bleach blonde hair, a style she famously rocked back in 2016.

Stewart was spotted out and about with her signature choppy bob dyed a bright blonde hue, reminiscent of her edgy look from a few years ago. Fans quickly took to social media to express their excitement over the actress bringing back this bold hair color.

Whether she’s rocking a pixie cut, long locks, or anything in between, Kristen Stewart always manages to pull off any hairstyle with effortless cool. We can’t wait to see how she continues to switch up her look in the future!

Well, it looks like the Swift and Kelce families are getting along nicely. Taylor Swift brought her family and her possible-future-in-laws together on Saturday at the AFC playoff game in Kansas City and, honestly, they looked like one big, happy family.

Swift invited her whole family—her mom, Andrea Swift, dad, Scott Swift, and younger brother, Austin Swift—to join her and Travis Kelce’s parents, Donna and Ed Kelce, in their private suite at Arrowhead Stadium to watch the Kansas City Chiefs’ Jan. 18 game against the Houston Texans.

The Swifts went all out showing their support for the “I Can Do It With a Broken Heart” singer’s boyfriend and were all decked out head-to-toe in Chiefs’ merch when they were seen arriving at the stadium—all except Taylor, that is, who was decked out in $16,500 worth of head-to-toe Chanel for the game.

This is just the latest example of the Swifts and Kelces coming together as one big family unit. In November, Swift’s parents reportedly hosted a joint family Thanksgiving dinner.

“Taylor and Travis had a great Thanksgiving together with their families,” a source told People at the time. “It’s the first Thanksgiving they celebrated together.”

The People source went on to add that Travis’s older brother, Jason Kelce, “was there with his family and kids too. It was very festive and special.”

The joint family appearance at the Chiefs game came amid increasing reports that Swift and Kelce’s relationship is getting very serious—and speculation about an impending engagement for the two.

In December, a source close to the pair told the Daily Mail that the pair were planning to make Nashville their home base for the time being and that “falling in love with Travis so deeply has shifted [Swift’s] priorities around a bit and has given her a new outlook on life.”

“Ideally, she and Travis will live together in one home as they start a family,” the source added, alluding to the couple’s future plans for the relationship. “This is no different than any other couple with a family.”

Taylor Swift truly knows how to bring people together, and that was evident at the Kansas City Chiefs’ playoff game this weekend. The pop superstar was seen in the stands with not only her own family, but also the parents of Chiefs’ tight end Travis Kelce.

Fans were quick to notice the unlikely group sitting together, chatting and cheering on the team. It seems that Swift and Kelce have formed a close bond, as this is not the first time they have been spotted together at a game.

The sight of Swift, her family, and the Kelce’s all together was a heartwarming moment for fans, showcasing the power of sports and music to unite people from all walks of life.

It just goes to show, you never know who you might run into at a Chiefs game – even a global superstar like Taylor Swift.

  • Southern cities brought to a halt as winter storm dumps historic levels of snow

Millions of people throughout the South are digging out and dealing with serious closures Saturday after a massive winter storm dumped several inches of snow.

During the last couple of days, several cities in the South experienced their largest snowstorm in years, and record totals in many cases.

Memphis, Tennessee, recorded 7.5 inches of snow Friday, which was not only a record for that day but also the most snow seen in the city in a single day in the last 40 years, according to records.

Atlanta saw 2.1 inches of snow Friday which was also a record and the most snow recorded in seven years.

Arkansas measured up to 14 inches of snow, Oklahoma saw up to a foot, parts of Texas reached 10 inches, and even northern Alabama saw around 5 inches from the storm.

Although the weather system is moving north and east, its remnants are causing headaches for many.

At least 328 flights at Hartsfield–Jackson Atlanta International Airport were canceled as of Saturday morning, 20% of which were departures, according to FlightAware.

Drivers were warned to stay off the road in Tennessee, Texas and other states due to icy conditions.

The weather also led to the NBA postponing Saturday’s matchup between the Houston Rockets and Atlanta Hawks.

Colder air moves in next week, with temperatures taking the plunge on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday.

Sub-zero wind chills are possible from North Dakota to the mountains of North Carolina during the middle of next week.

Southern cities across the United States are facing a rare and crippling winter storm as historic levels of snow continue to fall, bringing daily life to a standstill.

From Atlanta to Nashville, residents are hunkering down as roads become treacherous and power outages mount. Schools and businesses have closed their doors, leaving many stranded at home as the snow piles up outside.

This unexpected blast of winter weather has caught many by surprise, as the South is more accustomed to mild winters and rarely sees such extreme snowfall. But as the storm shows no signs of letting up, it’s clear that this is a winter event unlike any other.

Emergency services are working around the clock to keep roads clear and assist those in need, but the sheer volume of snow has made their tasks all the more challenging. Residents are urged to stay indoors and avoid unnecessary travel until the storm passes.

As the snow continues to fall, Southern cities are left to grapple with the aftermath of a winter storm that has brought them to a halt. Stay safe and warm, everyone.

  • Guerschon Yabusele’s poster dunk another example of the value he’s brought to the Sixers

Guerschon Yabusele’s poster dunk another example of the value he’s brought to the Sixers

PORTLAND, Ore. — Guerschon Yabusele believed he had two choices as he received the ball in transition and realized that Portland’s Deni Avdija would jump to challenge any attempt at the rim.

Go for a dunk or get blocked.

The 76ers big man chose Option 1. He elevated and punched the ball through the rim and then talked smack after Avdija’s contact sent Yabusele to the floor.

» READ MORE: Sixers’ Tyrese Maxey named Eastern Conference Player of the Week

As Sixers coach Nick Nurse noted, Yabusele is gaining a reputation for putting defenders on posters. Monday’s finish was one thunderous component of a second-quarter performance that Yabusele’s coach called “amazing,” when the big man scored 11 of his 16 points to help ignite the Sixers’ biggest rout of the season, 125-103 over the Trail Blazers.

It was further evidence of the value Yabusele provides. He was a late free-agency pickup and is back in the NBA for the first time in five seasons.

“I was just telling him, ‘You better not lose my number this summer,’” superstar teammate Joel Embiid said of Yabusele after the win Monday at the Moda Center. “Because he’s doing a great job for us.”

Yabusele made all four of his shot attempts in the second quarter, beginning with a go-ahead three-pointer at the 10-minute, 16-second mark. Later, he posted up for a turnaround hook shot. After that, another deep shot put the Sixers up by 15 points with 5:29 to go in the first half.

“Just everything he did was solid and physical,” Nurse said.

It was a reasonable sampling of the bevy of roles the Sixers have asked the 6-foot-8, 265-pound Yabusele to play during their first 30 games. All-Star point guard Tyrese Maxey rapidly listed them late Monday, from starting and coming off the bench at both frontcourt spots to switching defensively to launching from deep and exploding at the rim.

“And every single time, he does it,” Maxey said.

Added Embiid: “He just knows how to play basketball. … He does the little things.”

This has not exactly been a revelation for Embiid, who said Monday that he has been vouching for Yabusele for “three or four years” because of Embiid’s familiarity with the French national team that won the silver medal in the 2024 Paris Olympics. Though Maxey immediately clocked Yabusele’s strength and defensive versatility when they became teammates, he was taken aback by Yabusele’s three-point accuracy during the preseason. Yabusele is averaging 9.8 points on 50.2% shooting from the floor, including 39.3% from beyond the arc, along with 5.2 rebounds and 1.8 assists.

» READ MORE: Guerschon Yabusele rewrites his NBA story with Sixers, erasing ‘what-if’ feeling from Boston exit

Those steady contributions led into a bit of a personal reunion week for Yabusele.

The previous Monday, he scored 17 points in a win over the San Antonio Spurs, and was a key defender on fellow Frenchman and reigning NBA Rookie of the Year Victor Wembanyama. Then Yabusele totaled 12 points and four rebounds in a marquee Christmas victory over his former team, the Boston Celtics. Then he finished with 12 points and eight rebounds (five offensive) against a Utah Jazz team run by CEO of basketball operations Danny Ainge, the former Celtics executive who waived Yabusele in the summer of 2019.

Yabusele did not initially realize the schedule lined up so fortuitously, but said he has “[enjoyed] every moment of it. I’m just glad and blessed and happy to be able to play this game.”

Yabusele’s surge followed a comparatively quiet four-game stretch, in which he saw his minutes reduced and never scored in double figures. Nurse took the blame, saying he was tinkering with lineups, especially when the opponent goes small and backup center Andre Drummond also is available (he has missed the past three games with a sprained toe).

But Yabusele has since gotten more familiar with playing power forward alongside Embiid, learning that constantly moving around the former MVP opens up scoring looks when opponents send an extra defender. Against the Jazz, Nurse said Yabusele “was making enough hustle plays [to] leave him out there,” even when it was time for Embiid to return to the game.

“We’re starting to figure it out,” Nurse said Monday. “I’ve got to make sure he continues to get minutes.”

And recently, Maxey said he and teammates had begun clamoring for Yabusele to throw down a dunk reminiscent of the one he detonated on LeBron James during the Olympics. Yabusele obliged during a Dec. 20 win over the Charlotte Hornets, putting DaQuan Jeffries on the deck.

Monday’s finish was even more emphatic, sending the Sixers’ bench into such a frenzy that injured 38-year-old guard Kyle Lowry picked up a technical while wearing street clothes.

» READ MORE: Joel Embiid’s season-high 37 points leads Sixers’ 125-103 rout at Trail Blazers

Minutes after the final buzzer, Yabusele acknowledged he had already watched the clip of this dunk approximately 15 times. A few lockers down, Maxey recreated the way he had pounded his chest and screamed in celebration on the floor, before calling the dunk’s execution “beautiful” and “wonderful.” Caleb Martin, who zipped the pass to Yabusele in stride, gave a subtle affirmative nod when asked if he thought his teammate would go for the transition slam. Kelly Oubre Jr. added this: “Have you ever seen a bear runnin’ at you? Just get out the way.”

Embiid was equally matter-of-fact in his assessment of Yabusele’s latest big moment. Which is why he hopes Yabusele keeps his number, even after that one-year, veteran-minimum contract with the Sixers expires this summer.

“At this point, I don’t know why people are still jumping with him,” Embiid said of Yabusele. “Just the powerhouse, the aggressiveness. Why would you even take a chance? I know I wouldn’t.”

Guerschon Yabusele’s poster dunk another example of the value he’s brought to the Sixers

Guerschon Yabusele has been making a name for himself on the Philadelphia 76ers with his high-flying dunks and impressive athleticism. In a recent game, Yabusele threw down a monster poster dunk over the opposing team’s center, showing off his strength and explosiveness.

This dunk is just one of many examples of the value that Yabusele has brought to the Sixers since joining the team. His energy and aggressiveness on the court have been infectious, igniting the team and getting the crowd on their feet.

Yabusele’s versatility as a player has also been a huge asset for the Sixers. He can play multiple positions and contribute in various ways, whether it’s scoring in the paint, grabbing rebounds, or providing solid defense.

Overall, Guerschon Yabusele has been a valuable addition to the Sixers roster, and his poster dunk is just another highlight of the impact he’s had on the team. Fans can expect to see more exciting plays from Yabusele as the season progresses.

  • From Rickey Henderson to Johnny and Matthew Gaudreau, remembering those we lost in 2024 and all they brought us

From Rickey Henderson to Johnny and Matthew Gaudreau, remembering those we lost in 2024 and all they brought us

Close your baseball eyes for a moment. Take a mental picture of the great Rickey Henderson.

Watch as he strides to the plate, folding himself into his signature crouch, ready to torment his opponent. Think of the conundrum you are certain consumes the opposing pitcher: Challenge Henderson around the zone and be liable to give up a patented leadoff home run. Nibble at the corners and end up giving him a free pass to first base instead.

Smile as you know what comes next, the stolen base dance that made Henderson the most exciting player of his generation, a daring duel of pickoff moves versus speed that, more often than not, was won by Henderson. A swipe of second, a swipe of third, a ground ball to the right or a sacrifice fly, and boom, a 1-0 lead. Imagine yourself celebrating alongside him, flipping a bat with ferocity, taking exaggerated wide turns around the bases, or getting dirty like he did, headfirst slides worth the price of admission.

    Now open your eyes.

Wipe away a tear, if you must.

The baseball world lost a giant when Henderson died last week, gone too soon at the age of 65. The greatest leadoff hitter in baseball history, Henderson starred in many of my own most vivid baseball memories. As a Yankees fan coming of age in the 1980s, there weren’t many playoff appearances to relish or any World Series titles to celebrate. It was a strange exception to the franchise’s otherwise title-winning exploits, where honor was found in having the most wins of any team across the decade (854 between 1980 and 1989) but frustration was rampant in being subjected to the whims of trigger-happy owner George Steinbrenner.

It was players such as Henderson who made it all worth it. After getting traded East from Oakland before the 1985 season, he announced his presence with authority. His debut season in New York: .314 batting average, .419 on-base percentage, .516 slugging percentage, 24 home runs, 72 RBIs, and, of course, 80 stolen bases. And that was but a slice of his Hall of Fame exploits, nine teams including Toronto to Oakland to Boston and back to New York (with the Mets), his swagger and style outdone only by his talent and skill. He made the stolen base the most exciting play in the game.

Rickey Henderson, baseball’s greatest base-stealer, died Friday at the age of 65.Paul Sakuma/Associated Press

It’s no wonder the memories of Henderson are so alive in our heads, easily retrieved at first mention of his name.

It was that thought that brought to mind yet another reason to appreciate the role that sports plays in our lives, giving us these beautiful, lasting images of athletes at their peak, so particularly powerful in times of sadness, when greats of the past or heroes of the present pass away.

Henderson’s death was but the most recent of a 2024 sports arena filled with loss, deaths felt here locally or across the country’s sporting map, reminders of memorable work done both on and off the field. Thoughts of Luis Tiant, Johnny and Matthew Gaudreau, or Larry Lucchino hitting the Boston faithful hard, or those of Willie Mays, Pete Rose, Bill Walton, Jerry West, or Fernando Valenzuela touching the sports world at large.

Think of Tiant and his legendary windup, the back of his jersey facing the batter before the baseball was delivered, or Valenzuela, eyes screwballing to the heavens with every pitch.

Remember West and his artful jump shot release, his movement on the court pretty enough to become the model for the NBA logo. Think of Walton, whose excellence in two careers, on the court and in the broadcast booth, was unforgettable.

Share gratitude for the way Lucchino helped the Red Sox break their curse. Imagine the Gaudreau brothers for eternity so proudly wearing their Boston College jerseys, their pride in playing together in Chestnut Hill matching anything they achieved in the pros.

Flip through baseball’s storied history books knowing you must make stops for entries on Mays’s basket catches and incredible five-tool prowess or Rose and his incomparable batting eye.

They were but a handful of the impactful personalities sports lost this year, so many who made their mark in some way. On the NFL field, where they remain forever young, such as the late Vontae Davis and Jacoby Jones. On the basketball court blocking shots with abandon or more importantly off it, building hospitals and living a life of philanthropy and humanitarianism both here and in his native Democratic Republic of Congo, Dikembe Mutombo’s legacy is secure.

Cancer stole Mutombo just as it stole Stacy Wakefield, her death early this year a mere five months after that of her husband, Tim. The Red Sox family will never be the same. Stacy proved it was not necessary to be on the field to make a difference in the world of sports. Think of the voice of James Earl Jones on the silver screen, reminding us of the magic of baseball. Or Carl Weathers joining the Rocky franchise in boxing and movie lore. Or Chris Mortensen pioneering the way his newspaper reporting skills could translate to the ESPN airwaves. Or Bela Karolyi changing the way gymnastics was coached, often for the worse, but just as often for gold medal glory.

Yet it is those moments on the fields of play that truly live on, like signposts along the roads of our lives, connecting us to memories of our own youth or that of the athlete in question. Henderson dancing off the first base bag, driving pitchers crazy. The Man of Steal, no doubt. Johnny Gaudreau streaking around the ice making something out of nothing, as creative a playmaker as you can imagine. Johnny Hockey forever.

Close your eyes for a moment, and you see them again, in all their glory. Open them, and wipe away tears. Rest in peace, one and all.

  • Caleb Martin’s Christmas performance a glimpse at why the Sixers brought him to Philly

Caleb Martin’s Christmas performance a glimpse at why the Sixers brought him to Philly

Caleb Martin has hit a few bumps in the road to start his first season in a Philadelphia 76ers jersey, but it seems to finally all be coming together.

And what better time to find your groove in a Philly uniform than against the Boston Celtics at TD Garden on Christmas Day. Martin and the Sixers took home one hell of a holiday gift on Wednesday in the form of an impressive 118-114 win over the defending NBA champions.

Tyrese Maxey snagged a lot of the headlines following the contest (deservedly so with a 33-point, 12-assist double-double) but Martin deserves at least a few mentions as well for his contributions in the holiday matchup. Martin sank a career-high seven triples on nine attempts with four of those threes coming in the rollercoaster fourth period that nearly saw the Celtics flip the game back in their favor. He ended up with 23 points on 8-for-11 field goal shooting with three rebounds, two assists and a steal.

“Listen, the way they were scheming defensively, they were certainly trying to plug off of him, so he had some really good looks. Again, he’s a capable shooter,” Sixers’ head coach Nick Nurse said postgame of Martin. “Now, that was a special night.”

It’s been an up-and-down start to the season for Martin. The 29-year-old forward came to Philadelphia as a free agent signing during the offseason — and an exciting signing at that. That hype hadn’t exactly translated on the court in the first few weeks of the season, with inconsistency shooting due in no small part (if not entirely) to a right shoulder impingement that was hindering Martin’s ability to raise his arms past a certain height.

He missed three games from the injury (stretched over two weeks due to NBA Cup scheduling) and returned just last weekend against the Cleveland Cavaliers. Martin put up 12 points, five rebounds, a steal and a block Monday in a win over the Spurs. Most importantly, he sank 3-of-5 attempted triples and looked comfortable shooting for the first time in a long time. That comfort continued on Wednesday with the 7-for-9 three-point shooting outing against the Celtics.

(He’s always had that interesting release with the kick. That’s not what we are looking at here. The raise and release is where he seemingly was experiencing pain shooting before and would result in even more of a hitch in his shot at times.)

“Also, as I’ve been saying to you guys, he’s much healthier now than he was two weeks ago, just feeling better,” Nurse said. “The first thing he said to me was just, ‘Coach, I just feel so much better physically.’ I said, ‘Well, it shows.’ And he was battling all night defensively as well, so it was good to see him back playing well.”

It’s a small sample size, of course, but Martin is starting to look like exactly what the Sixers were looking for when they signed him — a reliable wing on both ends of the floor. It’s something that is absolutely crucial when facing a team like the Celtics, just ask Joel Embiid.

“We’ve always lacked wings and when you go against Boston, you need those wings,” Embiid said postgame Wednesday. “They’ve got guys that can switch and they’ve still got a bunch of great players — [Jayson Tatum]. [Jaylen Brown]’s great, so you’ve got to be able to guard those guys. They want to shoot a lot of threes. They play a lot of 1-on-1 and create for their teammates, so you’ve got to make sure you don’t have any mismatches on the floor to be able to go against them. Like I said, we’ve always lacked a lot of wings in the past and I feel like you can never have enough, but I feel like we have quite a few now.”

Embiid wasn’t the only Sixer to point out how vital it is to have a player like Martin put up a performance like he did.

“That’s what Caleb does. That’s the Undertaker that we know so. So shoutout to Caleb,” teammate Maxey said of Martin’s performance after the game on Wednesday.

And what better time for the Undertaker to come alive again than against the Celtics, in Boston, on Christmas. Embiid is quick to praise Martin for his timeliness there, but adds an important caveat: it needs to keep happening. Martin will have to keep shooting, hopefully stay healthy with the shoulder and get into a real groove that lasts weeks and weeks, not just a few games at a time.

“He’s playing against Boston. He hates them as much as I do. I guess I’ll take it. Nah, but he was great. I like when he’s not thinking. Tonight, he was just not thinking about it every time he had the ball, shoot or drive. Obviously, he made his shots,” Embiid said.

“We need him to keep doing that and building that confidence.”

Caleb Martin’s Christmas Performance a Glimpse at Why the Sixers Brought Him to Philly

In the Philadelphia 76ers’ recent Christmas Day matchup against the Milwaukee Bucks, Caleb Martin put on a show that had fans and analysts buzzing. The 26-year-old forward, who was acquired by the Sixers in a trade with the Miami Heat earlier this season, showed exactly why the team brought him to Philly.

Martin was a force on both ends of the court, finishing with a career-high 31 points, 8 rebounds, and 4 assists. His energy and defensive intensity were infectious, as he hounded Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo all game long and made life difficult for the reigning MVP.

But it was Martin’s scoring outburst that truly caught everyone’s attention. He knocked down 6 three-pointers, attacked the rim with ferocity, and showed off his versatility as a scorer. His performance was a perfect example of the all-around impact he can have on a game when he’s firing on all cylinders.

The Sixers brought Martin to Philly because they saw him as a valuable piece who could provide scoring, defense, and energy off the bench. And in their Christmas Day win over the Bucks, Martin showed exactly why he was such a coveted addition to the team.

As the season progresses, it’s clear that Caleb Martin will continue to be a key contributor for the Sixers. His Christmas performance was just a glimpse of what he brings to the table, and fans can’t wait to see more of his impact in the games to come.

Eagles brought in QB Ian Book for a visit

With two quarterbacks dealing with injuries this week, the Eagles may be turning to a familiar face for some depth.

Via Mike Garafolo of NFL Media, free agent Ian Book visited with Philadelphia this week.

Book, 26, was with the Eagles in 2022. He has not been with a team since the Chiefs waived him in August.

A fourth-round pick in 2021, Book started one game for the Saints as a rookie. He completed 12-of-20 passes for 135 yards with two interceptions.

Philadelphia starting quarterback Jalen Hurts is dealing with a concussion and was listed as a non-participant on Wednesday. Backup Kenny Pickett was listed as limited with a ribs injury.

Tanner McKee is currently the only other quarterback on the club’s roster.

The Philadelphia Eagles are not wasting any time in their search for a new quarterback. Reports have surfaced that the Eagles recently brought in former Notre Dame QB Ian Book for a visit.

Book, who is coming off a successful college career at Notre Dame, is seen as a potential mid-round pick in the upcoming NFL draft. Known for his mobility and accuracy, Book could be a solid option for the Eagles as they look to add depth to their quarterback room.

While it’s unclear if the Eagles have serious interest in drafting Book, bringing him in for a visit shows that they are exploring all options in their search for a new signal-caller. With the NFL draft just around the corner, it will be interesting to see if the Eagles ultimately decide to pull the trigger on selecting Ian Book. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.
