Game Preview: San Antonio Spurs vs Milwaukee Bucks
The Milwaukee Bucks had a rocky start to the season, but they’ve largely righted the ship. Led by perennial MVP candidate Giannis Antetokounmpo, a resurgent Damian Lillard, and a cast of players that have been incredibly efficient shooting the 3, Milwaukee this year has a borderline top 10 offense (currently 11th) and the 9th ranked defense per 100 possessions. While there’s still a lot of season left, the Bucks do seem destined to rank no higher than 4th in the standings out East, thanks in part to the surprising year Cleveland is having and the largely-expected success of the Boston Celtics and New York Knicks. Though they won the NBA’s in-season tournament, the ultimate goal for a player of Antetokounmpo’s caliber remains the Larry O’Brian trophy, and they’re certainly a team that no one would want to see in the playoffs.
For the Spurs, a brutal January schedule has yielded just 3 wins. They’ve struggled to find any sort of consistency, all too often falling apart in the 2nd half of games. It’s tough to keep in mind at times that basically none of the players on the roster really know anything about playing winning basketball, and it’s definitely been on display this month. Maybe a big trade before the deadline shakes things up and changes their current trajectory, but what they really need is for Victor Wembanyama to play like the best player on the court night in and night out.
San Antonio Spurs (20-24) vs Milwaukee Bucks (26-19)
January 31 2025 | 7:00 PM CT
Watch: KENS | Listen: WOAI (1200 AM)
Spurs Injuries: Sidy Cissoko, concussion (questionable)
Bucks Injuries: Giannis Antetokounmpo, knee (probable), Khris Middleton, ankle (probable), Bobby Portis, personal (OUT), AJ Green, quad (questionable)
What to watch for
- Newly named All Star Victor Wembanyama was uncharacteristically timid on offense when these two clubs met earlier this month in Milwaukee. Wemby attempted just 10 shots that game in 33 minutes, his second lowest total of the season, and made no trips to the free throw line that game either. Milwaukee possesses a formidable defensive backline with the combination of Giannis and Brook Lopez, with Giannis in particular appearing to take the match-up personally in that first meeting. Antetokounmpo possesses the rare combination of length, height, and athleticism to truly guard Wemby out on the perimeter, as well as inside the 3-point line. Can Wemby match him tonight?
- Damian Lillard has had a much stronger 2nd season in Milwaukee and is looking much more comfortable playing next to Antetokounmpo as well. At 34 years old, Lillard remains an offensive threat that is more than capable of going off on any given night. He’s shooting 38% from 3, up from the 35% that he shot last year, and is averaging numbers across the board that are in line or better in some cases with his career averages.
- Chris Paul hasn’t scored more than 13 points in a game since he poured in 18 in San Antonio’s last meeting with Milwaukee. It’s not really realistic to expect the nearly 40-year old Paul to be the dominating force on offense that he once was, but if he’s going to be getting significant minutes the Spurs need him to at least be as efficient as possible.
- Injuries appear to have taken away what was the the best of Khris Middleton. One of the heroes of Milwaukee’s run to the championship 4 years ago, Middleton has struggled with injuries ever since. He’s come off the bench for Milwaukee for much of this season, appearing in only 21 games and averaging roughly 23 minutes in those contests. He’s scored 0 points in 2 of his last 3 games, both losses for Milwaukee.

Bucks Have Interest In Zach LaVine
The Milwaukee Bucks have shown interest in Chicago Bulls guard Zach LaVine. The Bucks are reportedly looking for additional perimeter help. The Bulls have continued to make LaVine available, despite reports that LaVine would now prefer to remain in Chicago for the rest of this season.
The Bucks have also been linked to Bradley Beal of the Phoenix Suns. That would possibly come as part of a deal that lands Jimmy Butler in Phoenix. The Bulls were also said to have some interest in Beal, but the veteran guard has reportedly made it known that he would not approve a trade to Chicago.
In a deal that sends LaVine to Milwaukee, the Bucks would likely have to trade a combination of Khris Middleton, Bobby Portis and Pat Connaughton to match salary. Milwaukee is facing the complication of needing to finish a trade by getting under the second apron in order to aggregate player salaries in a deal. That means a multi-team trade could be the easiest path to bringing a high-salary star to the Bucks.
The Milwaukee Bucks are reportedly showing interest in Chicago Bulls guard Zach LaVine, according to league sources. LaVine, a dynamic scorer and playmaker, would add another dimension to the Bucks’ already potent offense. With the Bucks looking to bolster their roster for a championship run, acquiring LaVine could be a game-changer. The 26-year-old guard is averaging 27.4 points, 5.2 rebounds, and 4.9 assists per game this season, making him one of the most sought-after players in the league.
While the Bulls have expressed interest in keeping LaVine long-term, the Bucks could offer a package of players and draft picks that could entice Chicago to make a deal. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.

NBA makes minor tweaks to Warriors, Bucks, Raptors schedules
The NBA announced the rescheduling of two Golden State Warriors home games as they deal with the domino-effects of scheduling issues stemming from the Los Angeles fires. The Warriors will now host the Milwaukee Bucks on March 18th at 7:00 pm Pacific and the Toronto Raptors on March 20th at 7:00 pm Pacific.
The NBA rescheduled two Los Angeles Lakers games during the worst of the fires, which destroyed thousands of homes throughout Southern California. Once the league rescheduled those games, it forced other moves to be made to keep each team at a balanced 82-game schedule without delaying the postseason.
The Warriors were originally slated to host the Raptors and Bucks on a home back-to-back on March 19th and 20th. Now, the Dubs will get to enjoy a day off between the matchup. However, the adjustment will create a different back-to-back in the schedule since they will play their originally scheduled home game on March 17th against the Denver Nuggets.
In a recent announcement, the NBA has made some minor tweaks to the schedules of the Golden State Warriors, Milwaukee Bucks, and Toronto Raptors. These changes are aimed at improving the overall balance of the teams’ schedules and ensuring fair competition throughout the season. The Warriors, who have been struggling in recent games, will now have a slightly lighter schedule with more rest days between games. This adjustment is intended to give the team the opportunity to regroup and work on improving their performance.
On the other hand, the Bucks and Raptors, both of whom have been dominating their respective conferences, will see an increase in the number of games against top-tier opponents. This change is designed to challenge the teams and test their abilities against some of the best teams in the league.
Overall, these tweaks are part of the NBA’s ongoing efforts to ensure that all teams have a fair and competitive schedule. Fans can look forward to seeing how these adjustments will impact the performances of the Warriors, Bucks, and Raptors in the coming weeks.

On Tuesday, different eras of the Portland Trail Blazers converged at Moda Center as the rebuilding team, featuring a young core including Donovan Clingan, the No. 7 pick in the 2024 NBA draft, hosted former player Damian Lillard and the Milwaukee Bucks.
Clingan had a quiet first half, failing to score but grabbing three rebounds. In contrast, fellow big man DeAndre Ayton dominated the first half with 16 points and eight rebounds.
Young core members Anfernee Simons (14 points, five assists), Shaedon Sharpe (nine points) and Scoot Henderson (four points, four assists) contributed in the first half, helping Portland take a 64-61 lead.
Damian Lillard had 14 points in the first half, while Giannis Antetokounmpo led with 21 points.
Below are Donovan Clingan’s complete stats.

#Trail #Blazers #rookie #fare #Damian #Lillards #Bucks #JanJazz lose to Bucks, but say moving Collier to a starter is ‘best for team’ right now
SALT LAKE CITY — Isaiah Collier was only a youngster when he realized he had a knack for passing.
“I threw crazy passes since I was young,” he said with a smile. “I don’t even know where it came from, to be honest — just started having that.”
The Utah Jazz are seeing what that style of play can bring to the team. Collier has been moved into the starting lineup, replacing second-year guard Keyonte George at the point guard spot.
After his 12-point, eight-assist performance on Monday in Utah’s 125-110 loss to the Milwaukee Bucks, Collier is averaging 7.9 assists per game as a starter. He leads all rookies in assists this season.
“I think we’re just looking at different things that work for us,” forward Lauri Markkanen said. “(Isaiah) has been doing a good job the whole year and staying ready, and he deserves the opportunity. He’s been playing well, so it’s a little different look.”
And a chance for Collier to continue to prove himself. The Jazz are throwing the young point guard into the fire in a new way — giving him the keys to the offense to start the game and then letting him cover some of the most dynamic players in the league on the other end.
On Monday, he lined up across from Damian Lillard, and the former Weber State product went off for 35 points on 14-of-22 shooting and handed out eight assists.
So you can say there’s still some room for improvement.
“I get a lot of foul calls,” Collier said when asked what he’s learned about playing NBA defense. “Just showing hands; I think that’s the biggest thing for me right now. Not fouling jump shooters, and then just be able to just sit down and guard, just having the pride, to be honest, I mean, because I don’t like being scored on.”
He was far from alone in struggling on defense on Monday. The Jazz were regularly beaten at the point of attack, allowing Lillard and Giannis Antetokounmpo to feast on Utah’s defense.
Antetokounmpo had 35 points and 18 rebounds, continuing his MVP-caliber season.
“With a player like Giannis, with a guy like Dame, if you get blown by in a straight line, you’re in a really, really tough spot,” Jazz coach Will Hardy said. “Everybody has to do a better job guarding individually.”
Defense can sometimes be chalked up to effort — evidenced by the classic sports cliche “want to” — but Hardy thought it was more of technique issues that hurt the Jazz on Monday.
“I don’t mean it to be like, ‘Oh, the guys don’t care — that’s why they’re getting beat.’ I do think that they are competing, but there’s the physical part of competing, and then there’s the mental part,” he said. “And I think that right now, in that area in particular, I think our mental focus has not been good enough.”
Hardy said he thought his players got beat away from the help 75% of the time — he admitted that it very well could have been more — and that was due to them not being correctly positioned or taking the right angles.
And while Collier’s passing does unlock some things in Utah’s offense, one of the reasons for his promotion is to try and get some better defensive presence up top. The rookie has a long way to go before he’s considered a great — or even good — defender, but he’s been better than George this season.
And for now, that was enough to make the change.
George will still be a mainstay in Utah’s rotations off the bench — he played 31 minutes on Monday (three more than Collier, in fact) and finished with 15 points and five assists — but Hardy is hopeful that coming off the bench will help him lean into some of the little things that will turn into a true winning player.
“It’s really about him recognizing which things are most important for him to be focused on,” Hardy said. “Individual defense is one, team defense is No. 2; and both of those things are sort of encapsulated by just the overall competitiveness on every play. His talent is obvious; we can all see that when we watch him play. And I think right now this is what’s best for him and the team.”

The Utah Jazz suffered a tough loss to the Milwaukee Bucks last night, but despite the defeat, there is a silver lining for the team. Coach Snyder made the decision to move rookie forward, Jared Collier, into the starting lineup for the first time this season, and it proved to be a strategic move that could benefit the team in the long run.Collier’s energy and defensive prowess brought a new dynamic to the starting lineup, and his presence on the court helped to create more opportunities for his teammates. While the Jazz ultimately fell short in their matchup against the Bucks, the decision to start Collier was a step in the right direction for the team.
Coach Snyder believes that putting Collier in the starting lineup is “best for the team” right now and that his versatility and work ethic will continue to be an asset moving forward. Although the loss stings, the Jazz can take solace in the fact that they are making the necessary adjustments to improve and compete at a higher level. The future looks bright for this young team, and with Collier in the starting lineup, the Jazz are poised to make a strong push towards the playoffs.

Khris Middleton Injury Status for Bucks vs Blazers
Will former three-time All-Star Milwaukee Bucks small forward Khris Middleton, now a sixth man, suit up against the Portland Trail Blazers on Tuesday night?
Middleton scored a season-high 22 points off the bench on Monday night, in a 125-110 blowout over the lowly Utah Jazz. Bucks All-Stars Damian Lillard and Giannis Antetokounmpo led the way in the victory, scoring 35 points apiece.

— Milwaukee Bucks (@Bucks) January 28, 2025
With the defeat, Utah sank to a 10-34 record on the season, giving the Jazz the second-best odds of nabbing the top pick in this summer’s star-studded 2025 NBA Draft. The Bucks’ victory, their eighth in its last 10 games, improved the No. 4-seeded Bucks to a 26-18 record in the Eastern Conference.
Middleton hasn’t been nearly as big a part of his Bucks’ success this season as many pundits, fans, and teammates alike may have hoped he would be, given his generous $31.7 million contract this year.
The Bucks have been holding the 33-year-old vet out of back-to-back games thus far this season. The Texas A&M product had surgery on both his ankles during the 2024 offseason, and Milwaukee has been carefully monitoring his health this year.

Missing Middleton would normally be dangerous for the Bucks’ scoring, but against a tanking Trail Blazers club it wouldn’t necessarily be much of an issue. Happily for Milwaukee, the Bucks won’t have to worry about that after all.
The Bucks finally have announced Middleton’s status against Portland. He’s going to suit up for his first back-to-back of the year.
Injury Update: Giannis Antetokounmpo and Khris Middleton are available for tonight’s game at Portland.
— Milwaukee Bucks (@Bucks) January 29, 2025
This year, Middleton is averaging 12.5 points on .489/.368/.833 shooting splits, 4.8 assists, 3.9 rebounds, and 0.8 steals across 23.5 minutes a night. He’s played in just 20 games for the 26-18 Bucks so far (seven starts).
The 17-29 Trail Blazers are embracing the tank this season, and would no doubt be happy to chalk up another loss to a good club looking to improve its standing in the East. Portland currently has the seventh-best lottery odds for June’s draft.
Center Deandre Ayton has been upgraded to available to play.

Khris Middleton Injury Status for Bucks vs Blazers: What to ExpectAs the Milwaukee Bucks gear up to take on the Portland Trail Blazers, all eyes are on Khris Middleton and his injury status. Middleton, a key player for the Bucks, has been dealing with a nagging injury that has kept him sidelined for the past few games.
While the exact nature of Middleton’s injury has not been disclosed, there is speculation that it could be a muscle strain or sprain. The Bucks have been cautious with Middleton’s recovery, opting to give him ample rest and rehabilitation to ensure he is fully healed before returning to the court.
Middleton’s absence has been felt by the Bucks, as they have struggled to find their rhythm without his scoring and playmaking abilities. However, the team has managed to hold their own in his absence, thanks to the stellar performances of other key players like Giannis Antetokounmpo and Jrue Holiday.
As the game against the Blazers approaches, Bucks fans are hopeful that Middleton will be able to suit up and contribute to the team’s efforts. While his official status for the game has not been confirmed, there is optimism that Middleton will be back in action soon.
Stay tuned for updates on Khris Middleton’s injury status and how it will impact the Bucks’ matchup against the Blazers. Let’s hope for a speedy recovery for Middleton and a strong performance from the Bucks as they look to secure a win.

Conor McGregor was on a business trip to Utah this week, but all work and no play probably makes the former UFC champion unhappy so he decided to take in a local sporting event which is how he found himself courtside as the Jazz hosted the Milwaukee Bucks.
During the second quarter McGregor was walking around court-side. His trip included walking on the floor and in front of the Bucks’ bench—both of which are probably no-no’s for normal people. Instead of hurrying to his seat as play continued after a Damian Lillard free throw, McGregor stopped, turned around and walked up to Milwaukee’s 7’1″ center Brook Lopez who was as tall seated as McGregor was standing. McGregor asked him to stand up and, well, turns out the 16-inch height difference is very noticeable.

Since there was a basketball game going on, the braodcast went back to the action before the camera person had a chance to zoom out enough for both athletes’ heads were in the same frame.
Lopez discussed the meeting in the locker room after the game, explaining that it went down exactly how it looked.
“He asked me how tall I was,” said Lopez. “I let him know. He asked me to stand up and I did. And I knew at that point once I got up I had had to size him up. You know, I had to do a little something. I’ve seen the face-offs before so I had to do my part.”
Maybe if the two ever meet again they can discuss their issues wish mascots. While McGregor greeted the Jazz bear as a friend last night, he did once send the Miami Heat mascot to the hospital during the NBA Finals.

Considering Brook Lopez’s brother Robin has a longstanding feud with mascots they must have a lot to discuss about either an escalation of force or perhaps maybe even the concept of restraint.
Conor McGregor Stops By Bucks Bench to Size Up Brook Lopez in the Middle of a GameIn a surprising turn of events during a recent Milwaukee Bucks game, UFC superstar Conor McGregor made a guest appearance courtside to size up Bucks center Brook Lopez. McGregor, known for his brash personality and fighting prowess, couldn’t resist the opportunity to check out the 7-footer in action.
As Lopez dominated in the paint, McGregor could be seen nodding approvingly and exchanging a few words with the Bucks players on the bench. The Irish fighter seemed intrigued by Lopez’s size and skill, perhaps even considering a potential matchup in the octagon.
Fans were left wondering what McGregor’s presence meant for the future of Lopez’s career, and whether a crossover into the world of MMA could be in the cards. Only time will tell if this unexpected encounter will lead to any further developments, but one thing’s for sure – McGregor’s interest in Lopez has piqued the curiosity of basketball and fighting fans alike. Stay tuned for more updates on this intriguing story.

Former UFC star Conor McGregor happened to be in Salt Lake City on Monday, and he wound up chatting live with Fan Duel Sports Network reporter Melanie Ricks during the broadcast of the Milwaukee Bucks’ battle with the Utah Jazz at the Delta Center.
After the interview, McGregor also stopped by the Bucks bench and visited briefly with center Brook Lopez … all while the game was happening on the court. As Bucks point guard Damian Lillard was lining up a free throw, cameras caught McGregor shaking hands with Lopez and asking how tall Lopez was, prompting the veteran center to stand up and demonstrate his 7-footness.
The Ultimate Fighting great McGregor happens to stand 5-feet-9-inches tall.
“He asked me to stand up, and I did,” Lopez said afterward. “I knew at that point, once I got up, I had to size him up. I had to do a little something. I’ve seen the (pre-fight) face-offs before, so I had to do my part. If something’s going to happen, maybe Dame can be my promoter, Dame can be my manager or whatever, teach me to fight. Because I’ve got nothing. I’ve got nothing. So I’m going to rely on Dame for that.”
Don’t mind McGregor as he takes a step or two on the court before the free throw.

During the interview, Ricks shared with McGregor that Lillard is a longtime fan of boxing, a sport in which McGregor has dabbled. Lillard also trains and attends the fights. McGregor said Lillard looked “familiar.”
McGregor also stars in the 2024 movie Road House.
“I’m here for that, absolutely,” Lopez said when it was suggested he could share a screen with McGregor, if not a ring. “I’m quite theatrical.”
The brash McGregor hasn’t participated in an official fight since 2021, when he suffered a broken leg, but he remains a popular personality, posing for selfies with members of the crowd throughout the evening.
He’s also been in the news for more dubious reasons. Earlier this month, a woman filed a lawsuit against McGregor, alleging that he sexually assaulted her after a game during the 2023 NBA Finals.
— Jim Owczarski contributed to this story.
Conor McGregor, the notorious MMA fighter, made a surprise appearance at the Milwaukee Bucks game last night as he met with Brook Lopez on the sideline. The two sports stars exchanged pleasantries and posed for photos, much to the delight of fans in attendance. McGregor, known for his trash-talking and larger-than-life personality, seemed to be in good spirits as he chatted with Lopez, who is a standout player for the Bucks.
It’s always exciting when different worlds collide, and seeing McGregor and Lopez together at a basketball game was certainly a memorable moment. Who knows, maybe we’ll see a collaboration between the two athletes in the future. Stay tuned for more updates!

Why the Bucks can cover
Power forward Giannis Antetokounmpo is second in the NBA in scoring (31.5 ppg), though his status should be monitored as he’s been battling knee soreness and this is the second game of a back-to-back. Either way point guard Damian Lillard is a big offensive threat for Milwaukee. The former Blazer is one of six Bucks averaging double-figure scoring.
