Undermanned Bulls hoping to get right by Saturday’s game against Bucks

ATLANTA — Bulls guard Josh Giddey had a good on-the-court workout Thursday that involved sprinting and cutting — a major hurdle in his recovery from an injured right ankle. He could be ready to return Saturday against the Bucks after missing four straight games.

“I wouldn’t say it’s a long shot, but a lot is going to depend on how he responds off [Thursday’s] workout and then probably get another one in [Friday],” coach Billy Donovan said. “That will probably be a pretty good tell on if he’ll be available on Saturday.”

The Bulls could use him. After starting the season with almost too many guards, they faced the Hawks on Thursday night without Giddey, Ayo Dosunmu and Lonzo Ball. Ball missed the last game because of an illness and still wasn’t fully recovered, so the Bulls left him in Chicago. Donovan sounded confident he’d be available against the Bucks. Dosunmu has been dealing with a sore right Achilles tendon and will have it looked at Friday.

“It’s kind of lingered a little bit, gotten sorer and sorer,” Donovan said. “Some of it may be his minutes — I don’t know. He is uncomfortable with it right now in terms of planting, pushing off, springing, jumping.”

    It’s going around

The Bulls have dealt with several players feeling under the weather the last month. The latest was rookie forward Matas Buzelis, who made the trip to Atlanta but was kept away from the rest of the team and didn’t play against the Hawks.

What was originally diagnosed as a sore right Achilles, the Bulls brought Dosunmu back to Chicago for imaging and saw it was a strain in the lower calf. The team will have a better idea of a timetable when he gets re-evaluated in 10 days.

John Cooper, of Lincolnshire, bought the mansion for $9.5 million Dec. 10, according to his hometown newspaper in Nebraska, the Lincoln Journal Star.

Let the countdown begin: Grifol … Weatherspoon … Eberflus …

The Chicago Bulls are feeling the pressure as they head into Saturday’s game against the Milwaukee Bucks with a short-handed roster. With key players like Zach LaVine and Alex Caruso out due to injury, the Bulls will need to dig deep and rely on their depth to secure a much-needed win.

Despite the challenges they face, the Bulls are not backing down. Head coach Billy Donovan is confident in his team’s ability to overcome adversity and come out on top against the Bucks. The players are determined to make a statement and show that they are a force to be reckoned with, even in the face of setbacks.

As they prepare for Saturday’s game, the Bulls are focusing on tightening up their defense and executing on offense. They know that they will need to bring their A-game if they want to compete with the powerhouse Bucks.

Fans are eagerly anticipating the matchup, hoping to see the Bulls rise to the occasion and prove that they are a force to be reckoned with in the Eastern Conference. With their backs against the wall, the Bulls are ready to fight for a much-needed victory and show that they are a team to be taken seriously. Let’s go Bulls! #BullsNation #RunWithUs

  • Bucks’ Damian Lillard plans to return from 4-game absence vs. Bulls after injury, illness

Bucks’ Damian Lillard plans to return from 4-game absence vs. Bulls after injury, illness

Following a four-game absence, Milwaukee Bucks All-Star guard Damian Lillard plans to return tonight on the road against the Chicago Bulls.

Lillard missed two games following a right calf strain that he sustained in the Bucks’ 97-81 NBA Cup Final win over the Oklahoma City Thunder, but as his right calf injury cleared up, the 13-year NBA veteran was forced to miss two more games with an illness.

Speaking publicly for the first time since his four-game absence following the Bucks’ shootaround in the United Center on Saturday, Lillard said this was not a situation where a star player was taking a night off and the illness was not an excuse.

“I f— wish it was that, I’ll tell you that,” Lillard said. “I was just telling (my teammates) earlier, like I’ve never been that sick before in my entire life.

“I wasn’t throwing up, nothing. I just didn’t eat for two days. I didn’t eat at all. I didn’t get up, nothing. I was down. It was bad.”

After dropping their first game after the NBA Cup in Cleveland without Lillard, the Bucks won two straight games without Lillard and Giannis Antetokounmpo. Antetokounmpo, Lillard’s running mate that forms the other half of the NBA’s top-scoring duo this season, missed two games with back spasms before missing the Bucks’ 111-105 loss to the Brooklyn Nets on Thursday with a non-Covid illness like Lillard.

Lillard hoped to play in Thursday’s game, but couldn’t make it through a workout confidently enough to get on the floor versus the Nets.

“A Couple days ago, I tried to work out — the night before the Brooklyn game — because I wanted to play against Brooklyn, and the whole time I was working out, it made me cough, coughing up sh—,” Lillard said. “I got through the workout, but I couldn’t breathe good. So, the last couple days, that’s all I’ve been doing. Just trying to work that stuff out and it’s still been like having me super winded, but I mean, I guess at some point, you just gotta get out there and burn it out. So, that’s what my plan is, at least.”

Following the Bucks’ Saturday morning shoot-around, Lillard admitted that the illness caused him to lose “a couple pounds” as he was unable to eat for two days, but he still felt confident that he was going to try to play against the Bulls on Saturday, even if he admits part of the reason of getting on the floor will be trying to get his conditioning back up to where it needs to be to compete on a nightly basis.

Bucks’ turnaround: Not only winning games now, but doing so ‘with a cushion’ and having fun

“Just get out there,” Lillard said. “I was a little nervous just to get back in the game because of how I felt just working out and trying to play three-on-three, chest burning.

“But also part of me felt like each day has been better and better and once you get out there sometimes in a game you’re gonna be tired but then you just start to feel better than you expect. I think it’s like an appropriate fear.”

While Lillard knows he might not be in the condition he wants to be and he might end up more winded if he plays Saturday, the 34-year-old point guard says his right calf is good and he doesn’t have any more concerns about the strain that initially put him on the sidelines following the NBA Cup.

“It was a mild strain to begin with,” Lillard said. “I did it against Atlanta in Vegas. It happened against Atlanta. I just tweaked it in the championship game to where it was like I’m going to miss — depending on when our next one is and how I feel — I’m going to miss that one and the one after that.

“But we got on that. We had been on top of that right away, so even when I tried to get back on the court, it was like a little bit tight because I hadn’t been moving, but it was alright. I didn’t have no issues.”

After missing the last four games due to a combination of injury and illness, Milwaukee Bucks’ star point guard Damian Lillard is set to make his return to the court against the Chicago Bulls. Lillard, who has been dealing with a nagging ankle injury and a brief bout of illness, is eager to get back on the court and help his team continue their winning ways.

The Bucks have managed to hold their own in Lillard’s absence, thanks in large part to the stellar play of their supporting cast. However, having their floor general back in the lineup will undoubtedly provide a major boost to the team’s offense and overall performance.

Lillard, known for his scoring prowess and playmaking abilities, will be a welcome addition to the Bucks’ lineup as they gear up for a crucial matchup against the Bulls. Fans can expect to see Lillard back in action, ready to lead his team to victory and continue their push for a playoff spot.

Stay tuned for what is sure to be an exciting return for Damian Lillard as he takes on the Bulls and looks to make an impact in his first game back from injury and illness. #Bucks #DamianLillard #NBA #Return #Injury #Illness #Bulls

The Brooklyn Nets (11-18) are in the middle of the two-game losing streak after tough losses to the Miami Heat and the Utah Jazz, two games that were certainly winnable. One of the players that missed both of those contests, forward Dorian Finney-Smith, is anticipating making his return for Thursday’s game at the Milwaukee Bucks to help his team get back in the winning column.

Finney-Smith announced prior to Thursday’s contest at the Bucks that he expected to make his return to the lineup, according to Brian Lewis of the New York Post. Finney-Smith has missed the past two games due to a left calf contusion, but from what Lewis reported, Finney-Smith seems like he’s ready to make his way back onto the floor at a time when the Nets could desperately use a win.

“I feel good. I’ll be out there today. Yeah, yeah, I’m going to be out there,” Finney-Smith said during his media availability, per Lewis. Despite being on pace to have one of his best seasons in the NBA, Finney-Smith has been dealing with some nagging injuries this season, including a left ankle sprain that caused him to miss eight of 13 games between the middle of November and the beginning of December.

When Finney-Smith has been on the floor this year, he has been solid for the Nets and was a huge reason for the team surprising a lot of people around the league with how well they were playing. Finney-Smith, 31, is averaging 10.8 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 1.6 assists per game while shooting 47.4% from the field and 45.2% from three-point land, putting him on track for his best shooting season in the Association.

Finney-Smith’s impact goes beyond traditional statistics as he is also the kind of player that makes the little plays so that his team can function at a higher level than it otherwise should have. With Finney-Smith on the floor, the Nets have a 120.1 offensive rating and a 116.5 defensive rating while those numbers worsen to 107.1 and 119.3 when he is out of the game.

Injury Update: Nets’ Dorian Finney-Smith (calf) expects to return Thursday at Bucks

Great news for Brooklyn Nets fans as Dorian Finney-Smith is set to make his return to the court on Thursday against the Milwaukee Bucks. Finney-Smith has been sidelined with a calf injury, but he has been progressing well in his recovery and is confident that he will be able to suit up for this crucial game.

The versatile forward has been a key contributor for the Nets this season, providing solid defense and shooting from beyond the arc. His return will provide a much-needed boost to the team as they look to secure a playoff spot and make a deep run in the postseason.

Fans can expect to see Finney-Smith back in action on Thursday, ready to make an impact on both ends of the floor. Stay tuned for more updates on his status and be sure to tune in to see him back in action against the Bucks. Let’s go Nets! #BrooklynNets #DorianFinneySmith #NBA #InjuryUpdate

  • Bucks’ Brook Lopez Makes NBA History in First Half vs Nets

Bucks’ Brook Lopez Makes NBA History in First Half vs Nets

Even four months shy of his 37th birthday, Milwaukee Bucks star center Brook Lopez continues to impress.

The 7-foot-1 big man out of Stanford is in the midst of a huge night against the team that drafted him, the Brooklyn Nets, at home in Fiserv Forum.

At one point, Lopez chipped in 11 straight Bucks points (including, at one point, three straight nailed triples) while helping propel the club to a massive doube-digit edge over the visitors.

But Lopez, a two-time All-Defensive Teamer during his Milwaukee tenure, has been getting it done on both ends of the floor Thursday.

When he notched his second block of the night, against Nets starting shooting guard Keon Johnson along the left baseline, he entered rare NBA air indeed.

Lopez became the No. 20 all-time leader in blocks league-wide. He has 1,969 career rejections, as Milwaukee’s official social media mentions. Lopez has now leapfrogged two-time All-Defensive Team power forward/center Theo Ratliffe’s 1,968 career rejections.

Next up for Lopez is trouncing former three-time Cleveland Cavaliers All-Star power forward Larry Nance’s career 2,027 career blocks. 15-time All-Star superstar Kevin Garnett notched 2,037 rejections throughout his career. He’s currently No. 18 on the all-time list.

Hitting the top 20 in blocks is representative of what’s been a shockingly extended second act for Lopez. When he first entered the league in 2008 as a member of the then-New Jersey Nets, he was an offense-first scorer for the Nets, and played almost exclusively within the 3-point line. Now, while competing for championships in Milwaukee, Lopez is a 3-and-D role player, and generally regarded as one of the league’s better rim protectors.

With Bucks All-Stars Damian Lillard and Giannis Antetokounmpo both sitting for the second straight game on Thursday, role players like Lopez and Bobby Portis have gotten extended run and extra touches, and they have responded in kind.

Across 15:36 in the first half, Lopez has scored a team-leading 18 points on 7-of-8 shooting (4-of-4 from long range), pulled down four rebounds, and blocked the aforementioned two shots.

The Bucks currently lead the Nets by single figures, 59-51, at the break, after Andre Jackson Jr. fouled Brooklyn’s Cameron Johnson on a 3-point attempt with 3.7 seconds remaining in the second quarter. Milwaukee has led by as many as 13 points.

Lopez, who’s on an expiring $23 million contract this season, has looked as excellent as ever in 2024-25. Across 28 healthy completed contests heading into Thursday, Lopez boasts season averages of 11.6 points on .482/.371/.737 shooting splits (that 37.1 percent 3-point rate arrives on 5.0 triple tries a night), 4.7 rebounds, 2.0 blocks, 1.5 assists and 0.9 steals per game. He appears to be at least making a case for one more multi-year, big-ticket contract in free agency this summer. Whether he earns that with the Bucks or elsewhere remains to be seen.

More Bucks: Bobby Portis Offers Blunt Take on a Potential Giannis Antetokounmpo Coaching Career

In a historic first half performance against his former team, the Brooklyn Nets, Milwaukee Bucks’ center Brook Lopez made NBA history by becoming the first player to record six three-pointers in a single half of a playoff game. Lopez, known for his outside shooting ability, put on a shooting clinic in the first two quarters, helping the Bucks build a commanding lead.

Lopez’s hot shooting not only set a new record but also showcased his versatility as a big man in today’s game. His ability to stretch the floor and knock down shots from beyond the arc has been a valuable asset for the Bucks throughout the season, and it was on full display in this game.

As the Bucks look to advance in the playoffs and make a deep postseason run, Lopez’s sharpshooting will be a key factor in their success. With his historic performance in the first half against the Nets, Lopez has solidified his place in NBA history and proven once again why he is one of the most unique and talented big men in the league.

  • Bucks vs. Nets Preview, Start Time, TV Schedule & Injury Report

Bucks vs. Nets Preview, Start Time, TV Schedule & Injury Report

Tonight, the Milwaukee Bucks take on the Brooklyn Nets for the third time this season in a game that will likely look quite different than their previous two meetings. The first game, which was right at the beginning of Milwaukee’s 2-8 start, went to the Nets. However, the Bucks took the next game a few weeks ago in an exhilarating finish. What charms will this third meeting have in store?

    Where We’re At

The Bucks recovered well after their post-Cup drubbing to the Cavaliers, banking wins against the Wizards and Bulls. Notably, both wins came without Giannis Antetokounmpo or Damian Lillard (illness), which meant others had to step up. Bobby Portis and Khris Middleton led the charge in both instances for Milwaukee, but key contributions from a host of role players (too many to mention, frankly) have allowed the team to keep winning. While the level of competition hasn’t been overwhelming it is a welcome sight to see the Bucks depth get them through winnable games.

For the Nets, it has been a different story of late. They traded away their key offensive engine, Dennis Schröder, at the first opportunity because, let’s be honest, he was winning them way too many games. To be clear, Brooklyn was faltering before trading Schröder but have dropped three of their last four games without him, losing most recently to the Heat, Jazz, and Cavaliers, while winning against the Raptors. Catch the extended recap from the Heat game here. Down a leading ball handler and creator, the next few weeks in Brooklyn are likely to be focused on more trade market shenanigans rather than gunning for wins. Still, an NBA opponent is an NBA opponent.

    Injury Report

For Milwaukee, Khris Middleton is listed as probable (bilateral ankle surgery). Giannis is listed as questionable (back spasms), as is Damian Lillard (illness). AJ Johnson and Chris Livingston are both out (illness).

Brooklyn’s injury list is quite a bit longer. The following players are out: Bojan Bogdanović, De’Anthony Melton, Cam Thomas, Trendon Watford, and Ziaire Williams. Dorian Finney-Smith and Ben Simmons are both listed as questionable. The tank is truly on.

    Player To Watch

With Schröder gone and Thomas out, the Nets are going to look for new guys to provide scoring. I considered Tyrese Martin, who dropped 30 points against the Suns on 8/10 from three last month. But Martin has been relatively quiet lately, so let’s go with Noah Clowney. The 2023 first-round pick got spot minutes in his rookie year, but has been given much more burn this season. There seems to have been a clear directive from the organisation to turn him into a stretch-five. Clowney raised his three-point attempts from 1.4 last season to 4.9 this season, and he’s making them at a 36% clip. The Bucks must be ready for that.

  • Both Giannis Antetokounmpo and Damian Lillard In Danger of Missing Bucks vs Nets Game

Both Giannis Antetokounmpo and Damian Lillard In Danger of Missing Bucks vs Nets Game

The Milwaukee Bucks will be taking on the Brooklyn Nets later today as the team looks to keep things going strong. Milwaukee has won two straight games and seven of their last 10 matchups overall.

But they could be missing some key players when they take the court on Thursday. In the initial injury report, Milwaukee has listed both Giannis Antetokounmpo and Damian Lillard as questionable.

More news: Bucks’ Giannis Antetokounmpo Opens Up About Post Playing Career Plans

They are both in danger of missing another game due to injuries. Antetokounmpo has been dealing with back spasms while Lillard is dealing with a non-Covid illness.

If these two can’t go, luckily for Milwaukee, it seems as if star forward Khris Middleton could suit up. Middleton is listed as questionable heading into the day.

Milwaukee enters this game with a record of 16-12, sitting in fifth place within the Eastern Conference. They have completely turned things around after a poor start to the season and put themselves back into contention.

However, these nagging injuries are what could severely derail the season for the Bucks. Milwaukee, like other teams around the league, needs health to be on their side as they get close to the postseason.

If this team is healthy come playoff time, Milwaukee could be very dangerous in the playoffs. It has taken some time but it seems that the star players have finally started to click together.

Both Lillard and Antetokounmpo have talked about needing time to develop chemistry on the floor and they’ve started to find it. If they continue to build on things and can stay healthy, the Bucks could make a run for another NBA title.

It won’t be easy with all the other talented teams in the league but the Bucks have faith in themselves. This team has dealt with adversity throughout the season and it could help them down the line.

The Bucks, Boston Celtics, New York Knicks, Cleveland Cavaliers, and Orlando Magic all will make their case come postseason time. Milwaukee has the tools needed to be a dominant team and will need to execute their game-plan to reach their ultimate goals.

With both Giannis Antetokounmpo and Damian Lillard facing potential injury concerns, the highly anticipated matchup between the Milwaukee Bucks and the Brooklyn Nets is in jeopardy.

Giannis Antetokounmpo, the reigning NBA MVP, is dealing with a knee injury that has kept him out of recent games. While he has been making progress in his recovery, there is still uncertainty about whether he will be able to suit up for the game against the Nets.

On the other hand, Damian Lillard, the star point guard for the Portland Trail Blazers, has been dealing with an abdominal injury that has sidelined him for the past few games. His availability for the upcoming matchup against the Nets is also up in the air.

Both players are crucial to their respective teams and their absence would undoubtedly have a significant impact on the outcome of the game. Fans are eagerly awaiting updates on their status and hoping for a speedy recovery so they can see these two superstars face off on the court.

  • Is Damian Lillard Playing vs Nets? Full Bucks Injury Report Dropped

Is Damian Lillard Playing vs Nets? Full Bucks Injury Report Dropped

Will eight-time All-Star Milwaukee Bucks point guard Damian Lillard be available to suit up for the squad for the first time since the NBA Cup final?

Lillard had been ailing with a calf injury following the team’s 97-81 Emirates NBA Cup championship blowout victory over the Oklahoma City Thunder on December 17. But most recently, the 6-foot-2 Weber State product appeared on the team’s pregame injury reports due to an entirely different issue.

Earlier this afternoon, a lengthy NBA injury report cast some doubt about Lillard’s availability due to what’s being called a non-COVID-19 illness. The former seven-time All-NBA honoree is not the only Buck afflicted with whatever this undivulged disease is, as two of his teammates were also either already ruled out or considered questionable.

But maybe the Bucks can survive without him. Sans Lillard and eight-time All-NBA Bucks power forward Giannis Antetokounmpo, a two-time league MVP, Milwaukee blasted the middling 13-17 Chicago Bulls on Monday, to the tune of a 112-91 blowout. While Lillard stricken with the mystery illness, Antetokounmpo has been dealing with back spasms and is officially out.

Swingman AJ Johnson and forward Chris Livingston both had already been ruled out against the Nets at the start of the day with the ailment, though Antetokounmpo and Lillard were merely questionable.

Now, Lillard has officially been listed as out for the contest.

Across his 22 healthy contests for the 16-12 Bucks, Lillard is averaging 25.7 points on .450/.371/.916 shooting splits, 7.5 assists, 4.5 rebounds, and 1.0 steals a night.

In the Bucks’ Monday win against their Central Division nemeses down I-94, former three-time All-Star small forward Khris Middleton and former two-time All-Defensive center Brook Lopez led the club in scoring with 21 points a piece. 6-foot-10 sixth-man power forward/center Bobby Portis, starting in the stead of Antetokounmpo, notched 19 points, 13 rebounds, and six assists against the team that drafted him.

Point guard Ryan Rollins, starting for Lillard, scored eight points on 3-of-6 shooting from the field (2-of-3 from deep), grabbed five rebounds, swiped a pair of steals, dished out one dime, and blocked one shot.

Rookie Milwaukee power forward Tyler Smith is on assignment with the Bucks’ G League affiliate, the Wisconsin Herd, and will miss the Nets clash. Middleton himself is being handled gingerly as he recuperates from bilateral ankle surgery, but will play on Thursday.

Brooklyn shooting guard De’Anthony Melton was traded from the Golden State Warriors after undergoing season-ending left knee ACL surgery, in exchange for future draft equity. He remains roster, but forever out. Veteran forward Bojan Bogdanovic is on the shelf recuperating from a left foot injury.

Shooting guard Cam Thomas (left hamstring strain), swingman Ziaire Williams (left knee sprain) and combo forward Trendon Watford (left hamstring strain) are all also on the shelf for Brooklyn.

More Bucks: Both Giannis Antetokounmpo and Damian Lillard In Danger of Missing Bucks vs Nets Game

Unfortunately, Damian Lillard will not be playing against the Nets. The full Bucks injury report has been dropped, and it looks like Lillard will be sitting this one out. Stay tuned for more updates on his condition and when he might return to the court.
