Liam Coen withdraws from Jaguars coaching search, will stay with Bucs on new contract
Liam Coen will not be departing the Buccaneers this offseason.
While a report emerged on Tuesday that Tampa Bay was bracing for Coen to depart the franchise to become Jacksonville’s head coach, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports Coen has taken himself out of the running for the Jaguars job. Instead, Coen will stay with the Buccaneers on a new contract that will make him one of the NFL’s highest-paid coordinators.
Coen, 39, joined the Buccaneers last offseason and helped make Tampa Bay one of the league’s most effective offenses. The unit finished No. 3 in total yards and No. 4 in points. Tampa Bay was also No. 4 in rushing and No. 3 in passing offense in 2024, helping the club capture a fourth consecutive NFC South title.
Quarterback Baker Mayfield completed 71.4 percent of his throws for 4,500 yards with 41 touchdowns and 16 interceptions. His completion rate, yards, and touchdowns all set new career highs.
If Coen had departed, the Buccaneers would’ve needed a new offensive coordinator for the third straight season. After head coach Todd Bowles fired Byron Leftwich, Dave Canales came in for the 2023 season and was hired after one year to coach the Panthers.
Now, the Buccaneers will have continuity at a key spot on their staff.
But, the Jaguars’ coaching search continues. They have reportedly set second interviews with former Jets head coach Robert Saleh and Raiders defensive coordinator Patrick Graham.
After much speculation and anticipation around his potential move to the Jacksonville Jaguars, it has been announced that Liam Coen has decided to withdraw from the coaching search and will be staying with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Coen, who currently serves as the Buccaneers’ quarterbacks coach, has reportedly signed a new contract with the team, solidifying his commitment to their coaching staff. This news comes as a disappointment to many Jaguars fans who had high hopes for Coen potentially joining their team and bringing his expertise to help revitalize their offense. However, it appears that Coen is content with his current position and the opportunity to continue working with the talented players and coaching staff in Tampa Bay.
While the Jaguars will now need to look elsewhere for a new offensive coordinator, the Buccaneers can breathe a sigh of relief knowing that they will retain Coen’s valuable contributions to their team. It will be interesting to see how Coen’s decision impacts both teams moving forward, but for now, it seems that he is focused on helping the Buccaneers achieve success in the upcoming season.

Bucs’ Liam Coen emerging as strongest candidate for Jaguars job
TAMPA — When Baker Mayfield learned that Liam Coen was going to interview for the Jaguars head coaching job a couple weeks ago, he began devising ways to keep him in Tampa Bay.
“It’s going to come down to a one-on-one at (TPC) Sawgrass for him to decide whether he actually takes the interview,” said Mayfield, laughing.
Well, this is no joking matter for the Bucs anymore.
Coen could be offered the Jaguars head coaching job, possibly as early as Wednesday when he interviews for the second time with the club. Doug Pederson was fired after three seasons and a 4-13 record in 2024.
Jacksonville also has scheduled second interviews with Raiders defensive coordinator Patrick Graham on Thursday and former Jets coach Robert Saleh on Friday.
But there’s a growing belief that it’s Coen’s job to lose. Not only were the Jaguars impressed with the 39-year-old offensive coordinator when he interviewed virtually a week ago, he’s also most equipped to resurrect the career of quarterback Trevor Lawrence.
The best evidence is what he did for Mayfield, who set career highs with 4,500 yards passing and 41 touchdowns and completed 71% of his passes in his first full season under Coen.
If Coen leaves, the Bucs would have to hire their fourth offensive coordinator in as many seasons under head coach Todd Bowles.
In January 2024, Dave Canales was hired as the Panthers head coach after only one season calling plays for the Bucs. (Canales had replaced Byron Leftwich with the Bucs.)
Would the Bucs offer head coach Todd Bowles, 61, a position in the front office and hire Coen to take his place?
It’s been done before. In March 2022, just a couple weeks after Tom Brady ended a 40-day retirement, Bruce Arians announced he was stepping down as Bucs head coach to become the senior assistant to general manager Jason Licht while Bowles assumed head coaching duties.
Coen is the architect of one of the most productive offenses in club history.
The Bucs averaged 29.5 points per game and 6.2 yards per play. And Coen improved the Bucs’ rushing attack, which ranked last in the NFL the previous two seasons, to fourth overall.
Rookie running back Bucky Irving became the first Tampa Bay player to rush for 1,000 yards and Mike Evans went over 1,000 receiving yards for an 11th straight season, tying Jerry Rice for the NFL record.
Saleh is a culture builder but a defensive coach who would have to build a staff to include someone who could help Lawrence. Same thing with Graham, who is a defensive playcaller.
The Jaguars signed Lawrence to a five-year, $275 million contract extension in June 2024, one of the largest in NFL history.
This season, he played in only 10 games and passed for 2,045 yards with 11 touchdowns and seven interceptions.

The Jacksonville Jaguars are in the midst of their search for a new head coach, and all signs are pointing to Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ offensive coordinator Liam Coen as the strongest candidate for the job.Coen has been instrumental in the Bucs’ high-powered offense this season, helping quarterback Tom Brady lead the team to the top of the league in passing yards per game. His innovative play-calling and ability to maximize the talents of his players have not gone unnoticed by the Jaguars’ front office.
With a young and talented roster in Jacksonville, Coen’s offensive expertise could be just what the team needs to take the next step towards becoming a playoff contender. His reputation as a rising star in the coaching ranks has garnered interest from multiple teams, but it seems that the Jaguars are leading the pack in pursuing his services.
If Coen does indeed land the job in Jacksonville, fans can expect an exciting and dynamic offense that will keep opposing defenses on their toes. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story as the Jaguars continue their search for their next head coach.

Mabasa optimistic Bucs can win another CAF star
Group C leaders and 1995 Champions League winners Pirates face second-placed Al Ahly, who are also the defending champions, in their last group stages game in Cairo tomorrow (6pm SA time). Both teams have already qualified for the quarterfinals but finishing top of the group is what is at stake as Pirates are on 11 points, one ahead of Al Ahly.
“This [reaching the Champions League quarterfinals] is all we’ve always wanted to achieve as a team… this achievement is big. I don’t know when was the last time this club was in the Champions League quarterfinals [the last time they were in the quarterfinals was in 2013, going all the way to the final before losing to Al Ahly],” Mabasa said.
“Hopefully, we can continue to work hard and go all the way in this tournament. We are really looking forward to going to the semifinals and we will take it from there… hopefully, we can get that second star but we are taking one game as it comes.
“Al Ahly are a big team but we are also a big team and we want to finish top of the group. We know it won’t be easy, especially away from home but we believe in ourselves. We will go there and put on a show… we are up for it.”
Mabasa attributed reaching the last eight of the Champions League to the kind of preseason they had and the hunger they drew from being eliminated by less-fancied Botswana champions Jwaneng Galaxy from the preliminary stages last season.
“We’ve worked long and hard during preseason and now we’re reaping the rewards. This is also a build-up from last season because we were eliminated early but that motivated us to want it more this season,” Mabasa said.

Mamelodi Sundowns assistant coach, Rulani Mokwena, believes that Orlando Pirates have what it takes to secure another CAF Champions League title. Despite their recent struggles in the competition, Mokwena remains optimistic about the Buccaneers’ chances. In a recent interview, Mokwena praised Pirates for their performance in the group stages of the tournament, highlighting their resilience and determination. He believes that the team has the quality and depth to go all the way and lift the coveted trophy once again.
With experienced players like Thembinkosi Lorch and Vincent Pule leading the charge, Mokwena is confident that Pirates can overcome any obstacles in their path. He also commended coach Mandla Ncikazi for his tactical acumen and ability to motivate the players.
As the knockout stages of the CAF Champions League approach, Mokwena urges Pirates fans to remain hopeful and continue supporting the team. With their unwavering support, he believes that the Buccaneers can achieve greatness once again and bring home another CAF star.
In conclusion, Mokwena’s optimism and belief in Pirates’ capabilities are a testament to the team’s potential. With determination and hard work, there is no doubt that Pirates can make a strong impact in the CAF Champions League and potentially add another star to their collection.

The Titans announced they completed in-person interviews with Packers vice president of player personnel Jon-Eric Sullivan and Buccaneers assistant G.M. John Spytek for the team’s General Manager position.
The Titans previously conducted virtual interviews with Sullivan and Spytek over the weekend.
Sullivan was promoted to vice president of player personnel with the Packers in 2022, after spending four seasons (2018-21) as the team’s co-director of player personnel. He also spent two seasons (2016-17) as director of college scouting with the team.
Sullivan first joined the Packers in 2004 as the team’s National Football Scouting representative after interning for the Packers during the 2003 training camp. He served as a college scout covering the Central Plains (2008-11) and Southeast (2012-15) regions.
He’s the son of Jerry Sullivan, a longtime NFL and college coach who retired in 2021 after more than 40 years of coaching.
Spytek is in his second season as assistant General Manager with the Buccaneers, and his ninth season with the team. He has 22 years of experience in the NFL.
Spytek previously spent three seasons with th Broncos, where he worked as southwest area scout in 2013 before being elevated to national scout, a position he held for two years (2014-15). He also was with the Browns for three seasons (2010-12) as the director of college scouting.
Spytek began his player personnel career working as an intern with the Eagles in 2005, earning a full-time college scouting assistant position in 2006 and spending three years as a college/pro scout from 2007-09. His first job in the NFL was as an operations intern with the Lions in 2004.
The Titans also had in-person interviews with Ed Dodds and Terrance Gray on Tuesday and with Mike Borgonzi and Ian Cunningham on Wednesday.
The Tennessee Titans have completed their general manager interviews with two top candidates: Green Bay Packers executive Jon-Eric Sullivan and Tampa Bay Buccaneers assistant general manager John Spytek. Both Sullivan and Spytek are highly regarded in the NFL and have extensive experience in player personnel and team management. The Titans are looking to fill the general manager position after parting ways with Jon Robinson earlier this month.
Sullivan, who has been with the Packers organization since 2004, has played a key role in the team’s success over the years, including a Super Bowl victory in 2010. Spytek, on the other hand, has been instrumental in the Buccaneers’ recent success, including a Super Bowl win in 2021.
It remains to be seen which candidate will ultimately land the job, but Titans fans can rest assured that the organization is committed to finding the best possible candidate to lead the team into the future. Stay tuned for more updates on the Titans’ general manager search.

Panthers’ Young throws 40-yard TD pass to Thielen vs. Bucs
Carolina Panthers quarterback Bryce Young continued his late-season surge to prove he should be the starter heading into 2025 with a 40-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Adam Thielen late in the first half of Sunday’s game at Tampa Bay.

It was Young’s 12th touchdown pass in 13 games this season. That’s one more than he had in 16 starts a year ago after being the top pick of the 2023 draft.
All 12 have come in the 11 games since he returned after being benched following an 0-2 start.
With the game getting out of hand, the 34-year-old Thielen split double coverage and Young connected with him perfectly for the touchdown to pull Carolina within 27-14 late in the first half. The 40 air yards were the longest completion of any kind in Young’s NFL career.
In a stunning play during the Panthers’ matchup against the Bucs, quarterback Sam Young showed off his arm strength by connecting with wide receiver Adam Thielen for a 40-yard touchdown pass. The Panthers’ offense was firing on all cylinders as they displayed their explosive potential with this impressive play. Vikings get bump ahead of showdown with Lions; Bucs trending up
The Rams’ tremendous bounceback from their 1-4 start to the season cannot go overlooked, as they’re only the 12th team since 1990 to make the playoffs — and just the ninth to win their division — after such a start. They’ve been in virtually every game since mid-September and have two of the best, Sean McVay and Matthew Stafford, in football’s two most important roles come playoff time. Even so, the offense could use a little pick-me-up. The Rams scored 44 points against the Bills in Week 14, then scored that many total in their past three games combined. They are in an interesting spot. Week 18 isn’t devoid of meaning for them; they risk dropping from the third seed (meaning they’d host the Packers or Commanders) to the fourth spot (meaning they’d likely face the Lions or the Vikings) with a loss to Seattle. In a similar position a year ago, McVay rested some starters, including Stafford, prior to the playoffs. Whatever McVay decides to do this time around, far be it from me to question him. He’s built up a little credibility, you see.
The Minnesota Vikings are getting a boost as they head into their showdown with the Detroit Lions this weekend. After a strong performance in their last game, the Vikings are feeling confident and ready to take on their division rivals.Meanwhile, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are trending up after a recent winning streak. With Tom Brady leading the way, the Bucs are looking like serious contenders in the NFC.
It’s shaping up to be an exciting weekend of football, with both the Vikings and the Bucs looking to make a statement. Stay tuned for what promises to be an action-packed matchup between these two teams.
