  • Messier Chirps Bedard, Why Sit the Young D? Draft Trades, Prospect Highlights, and Other Blackhawks Bullets

The Blackhawks got their fast start on Saturday — the fastest in team history — and then watched the Panthers absolutely boat race them for the 59:53 that followed. It was a rough reminder that the Florida Panthers are a well coached, structured team with championship pedigree and a standard by which they play the game. And the Blackhawks are… the Blackhawks.

    • It was a rough assignment for Connor Murphy to return from being out for a long time injured, and he showed some rust early in the game. Louis Crevier left the lineup in the middle of the first period after he was boarded and did not return. Interim head coach Anders Sorensen opted to put both Ethan Del Mastro and Nolan Allan in the press box as healthy scratches on Saturday. Mark Lazerus asked Sorensen why he was sitting both of the two younger defensemen and keeping TJ Brodie in the lineup. Laz tweeted the questions and his responses. I’m pretty sure this isn’t going to improve the responses from fans (it shouldn’t).
    • After the Blackhawks were completely overwhelmed in the first period on Saturday, Mark Messier had some very pointed comments about Connor Bedard.
    • I noted this yesterday after a flurry of trades in about a 12-hour window involving the Canucks, Rangers, Penguins, Stars and Sharks: as of Saturday morning, 28 of the first 64 picks in the 2025 NHL Draft have now been traded (assuming all picks transfer). Dallas had kept their first-round pick in 11 of the 12 previous drafts with Jim Nill as the GM. That speaks volumes about how NHL front offices view the depth of this year’s draft class.
    • It’s noteworthy that, among the teams specifically stockpiling picks in the first two rounds of the 2025 NHL Draft: Philadelphia (7), Nashville (5), Blackhawks (4) and, now, San Jose (3).
    • Good read from Mark Lazerus of The Athletic about how Frank Nazar is remaining steady thru the ups and downs of a rookie season in the NHL.

Why Frank Nazar is particularly well-suited to handle the ups and downs of a rookie season:

(Plus some quick game notes from Sunrise.)

    — Mark Lazerus (@marklazerus.bsky.social) February 1, 2025 at 5:47 PM

    • Landon Slaggert scored the only goal of the game for the Blackhawks yesterday. He was also credited with one blocked shot, one hit and a team-high four shots on net. But he only skated 11:02.
    • Colton Dach was credited with three hits, one blocked shot and two shots on net yesterday. But he only skated 10:46.
    • And here I thought Sorensen was installed as the interim head coach because he was going to play the kids more after having them in Rockford… because Luke Richardson’s style and approach were the problems, right?

Hey how about some Blackhawks prospect highlights?

    • Minnesota swept the Border War weekend against Wisconsin, winning 4-1 last night. Oliver Moore had himself a night, scoring once and adding two primary assists.
    • John Mustard scored a nice goal in the first period for Providence on Saturday afternoon.
    • Denver beat Omaha 11-2 (yes, eleven!) and Aidan Thompson was credited with two assists.
    • Jack Pridham extended his personal point streak to six games (four goals, three assists) with an assist for Kitchener.

In this post, we will be diving into the latest news surrounding the Chicago Blackhawks, including Messier Chirps Bedard, the decision to sit the young defensemen, draft trades, prospect highlights, and more.

First off, let’s talk about Messier Chirps Bedard. The legendary Mark Messier recently had some high praise for top prospect Connor Bedard, comparing him to himself and saying that Bedard has the potential to be a generational player. This is certainly exciting news for Blackhawks fans, as Bedard could be a game-changer for the team in the future.

Next, we have the decision to sit the young defensemen. The Blackhawks have made the interesting choice to sit some of their younger defensemen in favor of more experienced players. While this may be a bit frustrating for fans who want to see the young talent develop, it could be a smart move in the long run to give them more time to adjust and grow.

In terms of draft trades, the Blackhawks have been active in trying to make some moves to improve their roster. Keep an eye out for any potential trades leading up to the draft, as the team looks to add depth and talent to their lineup.

And finally, let’s highlight some of the top prospects in the Blackhawks’ system. Players like Alex Vlasic, Lukas Reichel, and Evan Barratt are all making waves in the minors and could be key pieces for the team in the future. It’s always exciting to see young players develop and make an impact at the NHL level.

Overall, there’s a lot to be excited about for Blackhawks fans as the team looks to build towards a bright future. Stay tuned for more updates and news as the season progresses!

  • Daily Bullets (Jan. 31): Cade Cunningham Clinches All-Star Bid, Berry Tramel on the Coordinator Hires

Thanks for stopping by – here’s your daily dose of Oklahoma State sports news.

Cade Cunningham made his first NBA All-Star game (CBS Sports)

Steve Lutz had some tough words for his squad’s play of late (PFB)

    • Berry Tramel’s assessment of the coordinator hires in Stillwater seems fair:

(Todd) Grantham has possibilities and (Doug) Meacham seems a stretch. But the way college football goes these days, we have no idea. Shippensburg worked, Gannon didn’t and Jim Knowles turned the Cowboys into a defensive menace. Now we’ve got the runaway transfer portal, which makes contenders out of Indiana. Any scenario seems possible for Gundy’s new hires.

  • Prather, Cook keep Bullets season alive

Casey Prather and Keandre Cook combined for 50 points and 10 threes to keep the Brisbane Bullets alive in the top six race with the hard fought 93-87 win in Christchurch over the New Zealand Breakers.

Prather and Cook put the Bullets on their back to help them overcome an early 10-2 Breakers lead but once Brisbane hit the lead later in the first quarter, they never surrendered it again even though New Zealand got within two late to give them a scare.

To be a chance to finish in the top six both teams likely need to win their remaining games heightening the stakes at Wolfbrook Arena on Friday.

The Bullets arrived having lost four straight with an injury crisis striking and they did regain Deng Adel, Casey Prather and the newly signed Callum Dalton while still without Tyrell Harrison, Rocco Zikarsky and Emmett Naar.

New Zealand started well to be up 12-2, but it should have been more had Tacko Fall made his foul shots.

Brisbane then went on a 16-5 run to grab the lead and hold that for the rest of the half to be leading at the break 46-40 with Prather and Cook going 8/17 from three-point range for 32 points between them.

The Breakers were left to rue 12/20 free-throw shooting but were still in touch but it was the opening stages of the fourth quarter where the Bullets pulled away for a first double-digit lead.

New Zealand lost Parker Jackson-Cartwright (19 points, nine assists) to an apparent rib injury, but they still got back within two thanks to Matt Mooney (24 points, four assists) before the Bullets held on for the important win.

Josh Bannan came up with crucial late plays on his way to 17 points and seven rebounds while Cook ended up with 26 points and six assists, and Prather 24 points, eight rebounds and four assists.

Tohi Smith-Milner fought hard down low for 10 points and seven rebounds.

The Breakers are now 9-17 with just three games to go but going just 19/30 at the foul line will be something they are left to contemplate.

Fall only took one more free-throw after quarter-time and made it to finish with 2/7 for his 12 points and five rebounds with New Zealand +9 in his 22:39 of court time.

The Bullets knew they had to win to keep their season alive but it was the Breakers making an imposing start in Christchurch going on a 10-0 run including a triple from Karim Lopez, but the 12-2 lead could have been more had Tacko Fall made his free throws.

He was proving a nightmare to guard for the Bullets but Brisbane eventually made a second field goal of the five minutes in when Casey Prather knocked down a three-pointer.

The Bullets built on that with 10 points in two minutes including seven straight from Keandre Cook before they went on another 8-0 run with triples from Tohi Smith-Milner and Cook.

The Bullets were clinging to the 21-19 lead after one before Prather made another three ball to push that lead out to five to start the second frame.

Thanks to the shooting of Cook and Prather, the Bullets maintained a lead for the rest of the half with it getting out to as much as nine, but the Breakers did pull it back to six by half-time.

Cook and Prather combined for 32 points with eight threes in the half for Brisbane but New Zealand stayed close with the 20 free-throw attempts even if they made just 12.

After Parker Jackson-Cartwright had seven assists in the first half, he was more aggressive looking to score in the third term and helped the Breakers back within three by three quarter-time.

The Bullets then started the final term with the first six points starting with a triple from Mitch Norton and soon after they were able to get their first double-figure lead of the ball game before ending up securing the six-point win to keep their season alive.

Both teams leave Christchurch and have to back up to play on Sunday afternoon with the Bullets first up in their last home game of the season against Melbourne United. The Breakers are on the road to Adelaide 36ers.

It wasn’t just Doug Meacham’s familiarity with new quarterback Hauss Hjeny that led him to Stillwater (or his close childhood friend catching passes there):

Oklahoma State’s new quarterback coach Kevin Johns, was the one who Hejny committed to first when he was the offensive coordinator at Duke and that connection remained strong even when the reality of college athletics took Hejny to TCU and Johns to the Sooners, where he served as an analyst until his promotion to interim co-offensive coordinator late in the 2024 season.

  • Hawks win big over shorthanded Bullets

The Illawarra Hawks didn’t let any complacency creep in as they took care of business of a terribly shorthanded Brisbane Bullets to win 121-87 at home on Monday night to further consolidate top spot.

The Hawks had moved clear in first place with the 22-point win over Melbourne United 48 hours earlier and remained at WIN Entertainment Centre looking to continue the momentum.

The odds were stacked against the Bullets who arrived having lost their past three games, and losing superstar Casey Prather just before the tip with an ankle injury.

He joined Tyrell Harrison, Rocco Zikarsky and Deng Adel sidelined with Emmett Naar still suiting up while Josh Adams and Mitch Norton pushed through to play.

Tohi Smith-Milner, starting up front in the absence of Harrison and Zikarsky, hurt an ankle early but was able to come back on and try to hold down the fort.

You couldn’t fault the effort the Bullets players out there were giving and that did even include a 15-2 run early in the second quarter, but they couldn’t go with the league-leaders.

The Hawks were just scoring at will and put up 35 points in the first quarter, then another 35 in the third and the lead blew out to as much as 42 before the eventual 34-point win.

The only downside for Illawarra was a hamstring injury to Darius Days after he had six quick points when he came on in the first quarter.

The Hawks remain clear in top spot at 17-8 and it was a blistering offensive display shooting 62 per cent to go with a 40-minute record 37 assists.

Tyler Harvey and Trey Kell III only combined for 15 points, but the former also had seven assists and three steals, and the latter 11 assists and six rebounds.

Sam Froling top-scored with 17 points and seven rebounds with Wani Swaka Lo Buluk adding 16 points, Mason Peatling 15 points and seven boards, Lachlan Olbrich 14 points and six rebounds, and Hyunjung Lee 12 points, seven boards and four assists.

The job of the Bullets making the top six is getting tougher with them now 10-15 with Keandre Cook top-scoring with 19 points to go with nine rebounds with Josh Bannan adding 15 points, six boards and five assists, Josh Adams 12 points, and Isaac White 11 points and three rebounds.

The signs were ominous early for the Bullets with the Hawks scoring two easy buckets, but they did well to stick with Illawarra for the first half of the opening term.

The Hawks were finding scoring too easily, though, and when they went on a 12-2 run with a couple of threes from Todd Blanchfield, another from Darius Days who also had a three-point play, and it was a 17-point lead.

Illawarra were leading 35-20 by the end of one with a trademark Tyler Harvey buzzer beater and that lead was out to 17 again at the start of the second, but then the Bullets made an impressive run.

Against the odds, Brisbane dug deep to score 15 of the next 17 points including a pair of three balls to Josh Adams, and another to Tohi Smith-Milner who shook off hurting his ankle in the opening minutes.

The Bullets had brought it all the way back to a four-point ball game but the Hawks responded with their own run of 13 straight points with Mason Peatling having the half of his life with seven of those.

Peatling also finished with Illawarra’s last four points of the half and the home team and league-leaders went into the break leading 56-41 thanks to shooting 61 per cent from the field to 41 from the Bullets.

The Hawks opened the second half with the first five points with a three ball from Swaka Lo Buluk and that saw the lead grow to 20 for the first time in the game.

Illawarra ended up piling on another 35 points in the quarter to lead by 31 at three quarter-time before rolling to the 34-point triumph.

The Hawks now head to Cairns to play the Taipans on Thursday night while the Breakers remain on the road to play the New Zealand Breakers on Friday in what is now a must-win affair for them.

ILLAWARRA HAWKS 121 (Froling 17, Swaka Lo Buluk 16, Peatling 15)

    BOX SCORE

    Nb L25 App 1920x250 (1)

The Atlanta Hawks came out on top in a dominant performance against the shorthanded Washington Bullets. Despite missing key players, the Hawks were able to capitalize on their opponents’ weaknesses and secure a big win.

The Hawks’ offense was firing on all cylinders, with standout performances from Trae Young, who led the team in scoring, and John Collins, who dominated in the paint. The team’s defense was also stellar, holding the Bullets to a low shooting percentage and forcing turnovers.

Overall, it was a commanding win for the Hawks, who continue to show their strength and depth as a team. With this victory, they are proving themselves as serious contenders in the Eastern Conference.

    Illawarra Hawks vs Brisbane Bullets

Monday 7:30pm AEDT (Jan 20), WIN Entertainment Centre

The Illawarra Hawks take on the Brisbane Bullets in a game that could shape the rest of the season for both teams. The Hawks, sitting at the top of the ladder with a 16-8 record, are looking to stay in first place. On the other hand, the Bullets are clinging to their finals hopes, sitting eighth at 10-14 and needing to win their last four games to have any chance of sneaking into the top six. The Hawks have had Brisbane’s measure this season, winning both matchups comfortably—by 12 points at home and 18 on the road.

The Hawks are in a great spot, with a fully fit roster and the best depth in the league. They lead the league in scoring, averaging 101.4 points per game, and have shown they can pile on points quickly. Their bench players have stepped up all season, allowing them to keep the pressure on opponents for the full 40 minutes. With confidence high and everything clicking, Illawarra look ready to keep their momentum going in front of their home fans.

For the Bullets, it’s a different story. Injuries have taken a huge toll on their season, leaving them with little depth to back up their starters. On top of that, their defence has been leaky lately, giving up 105, 112, and 111 points in their last three games. Now they’re up against the league’s best offence, and it’s hard to see how they can keep the Hawks from running away with this one. Brisbane will need to tighten up defensively and find a spark if they’re going to make a game of it.

From a personnel standpoint, Josh Bannan has been more aggressive attacking the basket in Tyrell Harrison’s absence, but needs to finish better around the rim to make the most of his opportunities. Meanwhile, Sam Froling’s strong form and dominance in the paint set up an exciting big-man battle, with both players looking to assert themselves on both ends of the floor.

Everything points to a big night for Illawarra. With the Bullets struggling on both ends and the Hawks firing, this has the makings of another one-sided win. I expect the Hawks clear their 104.5 points line with ease as they look to stay in control at the top of the standings.

In this highly anticipated matchup, the Illawarra Hawks will face off against the Brisbane Bullets in Round 17 of the NBL25 season. Both teams are vying for a spot in the playoffs and will be looking to secure a crucial win in this game.

The Hawks have been in solid form recently, winning four of their last five games. With star players like Tyler Harvey and Sam Froling leading the way, they have shown that they have what it takes to compete with the best teams in the league.

On the other hand, the Bullets have had a mixed season so far, but they are still in contention for a playoff spot. With talented players like Nathan Sobey and Lamar Patterson on their roster, they have the firepower to cause problems for any team in the league.

In terms of prediction, this game could go either way as both teams are evenly matched. However, the Hawks have been in better form recently and will have the home-court advantage, which could give them the edge in this matchup.

    Tips:
    – Keep an eye on Tyler Harvey and Nathan Sobey, as they are the leading scorers for their respective teams and could have a big impact on the game.
    – Look out for the battle in the paint between Sam Froling and Lamar Patterson, as their performance could be crucial in determining the outcome of the game.
    – The team that wins the turnover battle and controls the pace of the game will likely come out on top, so ball security and execution will be key for both teams.

Overall, this game promises to be an exciting and closely contested affair, so make sure to tune in and see which team comes out on top in this crucial Round 17 matchup.
