Jasprit Bumrah, Virat Kohli’s Aggressive Act As Sam Konstas Pokes India Pacer Again. Wach

Australia’s young opening batter Sam Konstas has time and again shown his intent to not limit his talking to his bat. In the last over before stumps on Day 1 of the 5th Test between Australia and India on Friday, Konstas unnecessarily riled up Jasprit Bumrah over a matter that didn’t even involve him. Right after the incident, Bumrah removed Konstas’ opening partner Usman Khawaja at the striker’s end, prompting an act of aggression from the Indian pacer, prompting Virat Kohli to join in as well.

It all happened on the penultimate delivery of the day when Khawaja took a little time to get ready at the striker’s end, resulting in Bumrah’s rhythm getting disturbed. However, the non-striker Konstas involved himself in the incident by uttering a few words to Bumrah, riling up the pacer.

On the next delivery, Bumrah got Khawaja caught in slips, thanks to KL Rahul‘s brilliant effort.

After taking the wicket, Bumrah charged at Konstas at the non-striker’s end as a part of his celebratory act. Kohli, who is known to wear his heart on his sleeve, also came running from the slip cordon and seemingly charged at Konstas.

Earlier, India disappointed with the bat yet again, putting a total of 185 runs on the board, that too after stand-in skipper Jasprit Bumrah contributed 22 runs with the bat. Rishabh Pant was the top-scoring batter for India on the opening day, scoring 40 runs before giving-in to his attacking instincts yet again. Kohli, on the other hand, disappointed again by scoring just 17 runs before getting dismissed to the outside off delivery again.

India had benched Rohit Sharma in the match over poor form but his replacement Shubman Gill failed to make his start count as well, scoring just 20 runs before getting dismissed by spinner Nathan Lyon.

Bumrah’s solitary wicket before stumps on Day 1 set the desired platform for India ahead of Day 2. India would hope for a few quick wickets early on Day 2.

The incident occurred when Australian opener Usman Khawaja delayed Bumrah’s delivery, signaling that he wasn’t ready to take strike just as Bumrah began his run-up. Adding to the tension, Konstas intervened, gesturing at Bumrah to stop.

  • Melbourne effect: First time, captain to sit out, Bumrah steps into Rohit’s shoes | Cricket News

THE EARLY hint of India captain Rohit Sharma sitting out of the final Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy at Sydney came from head coach Gautam Gambhir. “We shall look at the pitch and take a call tomorrow,” he said at the pre-match press conference here on Thursday.

It’s rare for the inclusion of a team captain being subject to the nature of the pitch.

Later, Rohit had a light net session, facing a few casual throwdowns. There was no official announcement, but by evening the word was out — Rohit, who has been struggling for runs, had “opted to rest” while vice-captain Jasprit Bumrah would lead the side.

The team seemed to take the change at the top in its stride. After the press conference, Rohit, Bumrah and Gambhir were seen sitting in the bucket-seats outside their dressing room — chatting, back-slapping and laughing.

After this short meeting, Rohit walked towards the team bus, to be greeted by a roar from a small crowd lined up outside. “Rohit, Rohit,” they chanted, and the “rested” captain gave a big smile as he sauntered into the bus.

It was an unusual day. The pre-match press conference, slated to start at 1.10 pm, began nearly half-an-hour late; word came out that the team was in a meeting. Gambhir and Bumrah could be seen engrossed in a long chat before Rohit joined them.

Gambhir then walked the corridor to the ‘press-room’ to address the media contingent. Very early in the interaction, an Australian journalist asked about the captain’s absence at the traditional pre-game press conference: “Is everything alright with Rohit?”.

Gambhir stiffened up. “Everything is fine with Rohit and I don’t think it’s (the captain’s presence at the press conference) anything traditional. The head coach is here and that should be fine,” he responded.

But, he slowly began to relax a bit, and even smiled. Asked how he was handling the difficult period of transition in the team, he said: “It’s the role of not only the support staff but you people (the media) as well. How can you, probably, not only criticise them but try and help them out as well? Transition is not only for us. Transition happens for the entire country and all of us are in it together.”

As ever with Gambhir, there were some frank statements. He talked about how the Indian team has “lacked fight” at times in this series. “We’ve got to keep fighting and that’s why we love… every one of us loves watching, playing and being a part of Test cricket. I know we have got to fight it out. And that’s probably one area where we’ve lacked in this series,” he said.

Asked whether he had given a stern talk to the players in the dressing room, as reported by The Indian Express on Wednesday, Gambhir first said these were “just reports”, but went on to add that he had an “honest” conversation with the team.

“Those are just reports. That’s not the truth. And I don’t think I need to answer (on) any reports, to be honest,” he stated. Going on to admit that he had an “honest” communication with the players, he said: “And there were some honest words, that’s all I can say. And honesty is very important. Honesty is extremely important if you want to probably go on and achieve some great things.”

In particular, Gambhir addressed the need for players to strike a balance between playing their “natural game” and adjusting to the match situation. “It’s a team sport and you’ve got to play what the team needs you to do. That’s as simple as it can get. People can play their natural game, but still, in a team sport, individuals only contribute. It’s the team. If you need to play in a certain way, I think you’ve got to do it.”

On the field later, the Indian team seemed to be preparing for life without Rohit. The first point of interest was the slip cordon, the position where Rohit usually places himself at the start of the game. The cordon had a new face: all-rounder Nitish Reddy.

A short while later, Gambhir went down to the arena, fist-bumped Shubman Gill and patted him on his back. Gill then found Bumrah approaching him — a shake of hands ensued before Bumrah patted him on the arm. It did seem like the moment Gill was possibly told that he would play, replacing Rohit in the top order.

At the batting nets, stand-in wicketkeeper Dhruv Jurel batted in the first lot, a scene that hadn’t possibly played out in the series before. Virat Kohli and the rest joined him, before Rohit finally emerged from the dressing room and took his position at the far end of the nets, standing and chatting with the video analyst. Bumrah joined him shortly and both had a laugh.

Kohli, meanwhile, finished batting at the outdoor nets, went back in and emerged on the other side of the dressing room, overlooking the playing arena. He sat alone for 10-15 minutes, gazing into the distance. On the big screen, a promo of the India-Australia Test series was playing.

An aeroplane flew above, and Rohit looked up at the sky. A short while later, he left the nets, but emerged again with pads and took some throwdowns. He didn’t face any bowlers, and at one point, a yorker jammed into the bottom of his bat, leaving him screaming, “Mera bat, yaar!”. The scene was replayed on the next ball he faced. This was another hint that Rohit would do what no other Indian captain has done — rest for a Test.

The Melbourne effect: First time, captain to sit out, Bumrah steps into Rohit’s shoes

In a surprising turn of events, India’s regular captain Rohit Sharma has been ruled out of the second Test against Australia in Melbourne due to an injury. This marks the first time in his career that Rohit will be sitting out a Test match as captain.

Stepping into Rohit’s shoes as the stand-in captain for the match is none other than fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah. This move comes as a surprise to many, as Bumrah is not known for his leadership skills and is more of a quiet and introverted player on the field.

However, Bumrah has proven himself to be a key player for India in all formats of the game, and his ability to lead the bowling attack with precision and aggression has earned him the trust of the team management. With his unique bowling style and ability to take wickets at crucial moments, Bumrah will be looking to make an impact as captain in this crucial Test match.

The Melbourne effect seems to be at play once again, as India faces a tough challenge against Australia in their quest to retain the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. With Bumrah leading the charge in Rohit’s absence, all eyes will be on the fast bowler to see if he can step up to the challenge and guide India to victory in Melbourne.

  • Australia v India: Lyon and Boland shine after Bumrah brilliance

Australia v India: Lyon and Boland shine after Bumrah brilliance

The total attendance for this Test has reached almost 300,000 with a day still to go and those spectators have each witnessed a thrilling Test, with the see-saw action on the fourth day maintaining the excitement.

Australia will be the happier side as they move into the final day given their lead was only 196 when the sixth wicket fell.

Labuschagne’s half-century was the backbone of their recovery, Cummins again provided runs when it mattered most while Lyon and Boland tipped the balance.

Mohammed Siraj, who was excellent for his 3-66, dropped Lyon in his follow-through, at which point Australia’s advantage was 279.

The last-wicket pair looked comfortable late in the day as the bowlers tired, batting for more than an hour together on a pitch that had previously offered plenty of uneven bounce.

Boland, who ended 10 not out, cut for four to take the lead past 300 while Lyon hit five fours in his 41 not out.

Their efforts ensured India will require the highest successful fourth-innings chase at the Melbourne Cricket Ground if they are to win.

The previous record, England’s 332-7, was made in 1928, while no side has scored more than 231 in victory since 1962 – although Australia may well have had India’s epic chase of 328 at the Gabba on their last tour in mind when delaying their declaration.

While a draw would set up a winner-takes-all decider in Sydney next week, it would mean India’s hopes of reaching the World Test Championship final are no longer in their hands.

Australia must win the series outright to regain the Border-Gavaskar trophy while India need to only draw as the holders.

In a thrilling cricket match between Australia and India, it was a battle of the bowlers as Nathan Lyon and Scott Boland shone after Jasprit Bumrah’s brilliant performance.

Bumrah’s outstanding spell of fast bowling left the Australian batsmen struggling, taking crucial wickets and putting India in a strong position. However, Lyon and Boland stepped up for Australia, turning the tide with their impressive bowling performances.

Lyon’s spin bowling expertise troubled the Indian batsmen, picking up key wickets and putting pressure on the opposition. Boland, on the other hand, showcased his skill with the ball, taking important breakthroughs to keep Australia in the game.

It was a thrilling display of bowling talent from both teams, with each player contributing to an exciting and competitive match. As the battle between Australia and India continues, Lyon and Boland’s performances will be crucial in determining the outcome of the match.

In his last 14 innings, Rohit Sharma has managed just 152 runs. After missing the Border-Gavaskar Trophy opener in Perth, Rohit has registered scores of 3,6,10 and 3. In the absence of Rohit, Jasprit Bumrah led India in the first Test, which the visitors won by 295 runs.

Rohit Sharma’s lack of runs and his captaincy are both being questioned. In the Melbourne Test, the management went in with three all-rounders (Ravindra Jadeja, Washington Sundar, and Nitish Kumar Reddy).

Taking to X (formerly Twitter), one user wrote, “Out of form is one thing, but Rohit Sharma is giving Negative Energy now. That Negative energy is reflecting not just on his batting performance but also showing on team. Never thought player like him will be washed like this even in sunset phase of career. But that’s what Test cricket does. Take Retirement and Leave.”

Here are some of the other reactions:

    Rohit Sharma’s form under scanner

Even in the pink-ball practice game against Australia Prime Minister’s XI, Rohit disappointed, scoring just three runs. In the prior series against Bangladesh and New Zealand, the India captain registered one score of more than 50.

After Rohit Sharma’s dismissal, former Australia captain Ricky Ponting called out the Indian captain for playing a lazy shot. “That’s just a lazy, not-switched-on, not-up-for-the-moment type of shot,” Ricky Ponting said on 7 Cricket.

Earlier, former India captain and legendary batter Sunil Gavaskar had said that Rohit might retire if he fails to score runs in Melbourne and Sydney. Gavaskar made the comment during the third Border-Gavaskar Trophy Test at Gabba, Brisbane.

“I think Rohit obviously will get the opportunity to play in the next couple of matches, that’s for sure. But maybe at the end of it, if he hasn’t scored runs, my feeling is that he himself will take the call,” he had said while doing commentary for ABC Sport.

“He’s a very conscientious cricketer, he will not want to be a burden on the team. He’s a cricketer who cares very deeply for Indian cricket. So if he doesn’t score runs in the next couple of games, I think he himself will step down,” he added.

Rohit Sharma is finished: India captain told to ‘retire’, hand over leadership to Bumrah as fans lose patience

After a disappointing performance by the Indian cricket team, fans have begun calling for captain Rohit Sharma to step down and retire from the game. The team’s recent series loss has left supporters frustrated and impatient, with many believing that it is time for a change in leadership.

Rohit Sharma, who took over the captaincy from Virat Kohli earlier this year, has failed to deliver the results that fans had hoped for. Despite his success as a player, many believe that he is not the right man to lead the team and that it is time for a new captain to take charge.

Some fans have even gone as far as to suggest that fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah should be handed the captaincy, citing his leadership qualities and impressive performances on the field. They believe that Bumrah has the potential to lead the team to success and that it is time for a fresh start.

As the calls for Rohit Sharma to step down grow louder, it remains to be seen how the Indian cricket board will respond. Will Rohit Sharma choose to retire from the game and hand over the reins to Bumrah, or will he fight to prove his critics wrong? Only time will tell.

  • BGT – Aus vs Ind – Sam Konstas taking on Jasprit Bumrah no surprise to coach Tahmid Islam

BGT – Aus vs Ind – Sam Konstas taking on Jasprit Bumrah no surprise to coach Tahmid Islam

On the night before the Boxing Day Test, Sam Konstas told his batting coach Tahmid Islam that he would only play the scoop against Jasprit Bumrah after he reached 150. But, after a number of early plays and misses against the champion fast bowler on debut at the MCG, Konstas brought forward his plans for the scoop. It hardly surprised Tahmid, Konstas’ 29-year-old batting coach.

Tahmid said as much in a conversation with Bangladeshi journalists on Saturday, a chat arranged by Prime Bank Cricket Club, Tahmid’s team in a short stint in the Dhaka Premier League several years ago. The news of Tahmid being Konstas’ batting coach has made headlines in Bangladesh.

Tahmid, speaking via Zoom, said Konstas’ instincts took over on Test debut. “We were having dinner the night before when he told me that the plan was to only scoop once he got to 150,” Tahmid said. “It wasn’t really part of the plan [to play the shot so early]. But he is someone that plays on instinct. He plays with a lot of freedom. He doesn’t really think of the consequences of what people are going to say if he gets it wrong. I think it is his biggest skill and asset. Whereas loads of players think about the consequences like ‘what if I fail doing it’ or ‘what if I get out playing it’ or ‘the media and coaching staff will have a go at me’.”

“Sam is quite assured in his game. After playing and missing six times in his first ten or 12 balls, he thought that the best way to put pressure on Bumrah was to try to put him off his length. He threw a different challenge at Bumrah, which was really good for Sam. It really shell-shocked India. They weren’t expecting a 19-year-old to come out and play with that sort of freedom.”

Tahmid, who works with Elevate Cricket Coaching, said that he was hardly surprised by Konstas’ choice of shots against a bowler of Bumrah’s class.

“It isn’t a surprise. The reason Australia picked him was to throw India a different challenge. Sam took on the Indian bowling attack, minus Bumrah, during his century for the Prime Minister’s XI against India about three weeks ago. He played with a lot of freedom. He played the reverse-scoop. He ran down the wicket to play back over the bowler’s head.

“Sam is someone who will play some shots and put people off their lengths, as opposed to the traditional approach. It was a bit of a gamble. It paid off for Australia. Marnus Labuschagne and Steven Smith were talking about how Sam’s innings gave them the opportunity to go out and express themselves as well. It was the freedom which they probably lacked in the first three games.”

Tahmid, who first took up coaching when he was playing in the Yorkshire Premier League in 2013, said that he first met Konstas when he was 14 years old, at Cranbrook School where Konstas was on a cricket scholarship. “Five years ago, I took up coaching at Cranbrook in the eastern suburbs of Sydney. That’s where Sam got a scholarship to go to school. That’s where we initially met. He was 14 years old. We had this really good connection from the first couple of sessions that we did in school.”

Tahmid narrated the story of how he formulated a plan for his cricketing future with Konstas’ father. “I was having dinner with his dad one night. We had some Greek food, which is their heritage. I put together a bit of a programme for him to try to target for the next phase of his life, which was to play Under-16s cricket in the New South Wales (NSW) system. It was where it all started for him. It was about his technical, mental and tactical game.

“As the journey evolved, we were lucky enough to have Shane Watson involved in the mindset side of things. I worked quite closely with Shane over the last few years. I worked with him in Major League Cricket (MLC) with the San Francisco Unicorns.”

“He is someone that plays on instinct. He plays with a lot of freedom. He doesn’t really think of the consequences of what people are going to say if he gets it wrong.”

Konstas added power to his game in the last 18 months when, alongside Tahmid, he worked on his white-ball skills. “He was always a technically sound player growing up. He had the fundamentals of the game. He wasn’t a very powerful player though,” Tahmid said. “He didn’t score very quickly growing up, so he focused a lot on his white-ball cricket in the last 18 months.

“He made his BBL debut two weeks ago. The focus was to make him a better T20 player. He was contracted last year but didn’t play any games. That’s where his white-ball game really started to develop and come along.”

Tahmid said that his friendship with England batter Harry Brook helped him mould Konstas’ cricket. “Someone that we use [as a reference] is Harry Brook, with whom I was lucky enough to play in Sydney. He is the No. 1 [currently No. 2] Test batter in the world. He is a fantastic all-format player, with whom I am really good friends. I get a lot of information from him, which I relay on to Sam, on how to transition between formats.

“It can be quite challenging but nowadays, you have to switch between formats. Sam plays Big Bash five or six days before the Boxing Day Test. If you don’t have the ability to switch between formats, you will get left behind.”

Of course Konstas also didn’t just come out with the scoops, reverse-hits and ramps overnight. He has worked hard at these shots in the nets. But, Tahmid said, to execute the same shots in a high-profile match at a packed MCG takes a lot of confidence, which remains a defining feature of Konstas. “He has been doing reverse-ramps for five or six years in the nets. It doesn’t happen by mistake. They need a lot of preparation to go out and execute in a game. And when you have clarity from your captain and organisation, it helps you to go out and express yourself. You don’t have the fear of getting dropped.

“I think he was always a confident person. He always wanted to be the best player in the field. He used to tell me after training, ‘what celebrations do you want from me when I get a century tomorrow?’ That’s what he told me before the Boxing Day Test too.”

The highly anticipated match between Australia and India in the Big Game Tournament (BGT) saw an exciting clash between Sam Konstas and Jasprit Bumrah. While many were surprised by the intense competition between the two players, coach Tahmid Islam had no doubt that Konstas would give Bumrah a run for his money.

Konstas, known for his aggressive playing style and strategic tactics, proved to be a formidable opponent for Bumrah, who is considered one of the best bowlers in the world. With his precision and speed, Bumrah posed a challenge for Konstas, but the Australian player held his own and showcased his skills on the field.

Coach Tahmid Islam, who has been working closely with Konstas to enhance his game, was confident in his player’s abilities and knew that he was well-prepared to take on Bumrah. The intense match between the two players was a testament to Konstas’ dedication and hard work, as he managed to hold his ground against the Indian bowler.

In the end, the match between Australia and India was a thrilling display of talent and sportsmanship, with both players giving it their all. While Bumrah may have ultimately emerged victorious, Konstas’ performance did not go unnoticed, and he certainly proved that he is a force to be reckoned with on the field. Coach Tahmid Islam’s belief in his player’s abilities was well-founded, as Konstas showed that he is a true competitor in the world of cricket.

NEW DELHI: Former Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, who recently retired from all formats after Gabba Test, has finally decoded India nemesis Travis Head‘s strategic approach to counter Jasprit Bumrah and the rest of the Indian bowling attack in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
Ashwin noted how Head used the crease cleverly, altering his stance and footwork to neutralise Bumrah’s pace and other Indian seamer’s variations. This adaptability, combined with fearless stroke play, allowed Head to dominate key phases of the game, showcasing his cricketing acumen against one of the world’s best attacks.

Pat Cummins reveals Australia’s XI for Boxing Day Test

During Wednesday’s session, Ashwin, known for his sharp cricketing brain, noted a compelling detail about Head’s practice routine as the Australian batter readied himself for the upcoming Boxing Day Test match at Melbourne.
Head has consistently posed significant challenges for India throughout the series, delivering crucial performances, including two centuries. His exceptional batting played a decisive role in Australia’s series-equalising win in Adelaide this month. Nevertheless, Head has shown vulnerability against fast bowlers operating from around the wicket, with both Harshit Rana and Jasprit Bumrah successfully exploiting this approach.
Ashwin observed that during Head’s batting practice sessions, he appeared to protect his off-stump, specifically focusing on managing deliveries in the higher off-stump region to counter the round-the-wicket bowling strategy.
“Omg! He is getting to the off stump? Is that the ploy for round the stumps?” Ashwin replied on a video post on X which features Head’s net session.

Australia received welcome news on Wednesday when captain Pat Cummins announced that prolific batter Head would be available for the Boxing Day Test at MCG.
Head, who currently tops the run-scoring charts in the five-Test series for the Border-Gavaskar trophy, had sustained a quad injury in Brisbane.

Rohit Sharma: ‘Virat Kohli is a modern day great. He will figure it out’

The middle-order specialist has accumulated 409 runs across five innings during the series, comprising two centuries and one half-century, with an impressive average of nearly 82.

Ashwin decodes Travis Head’s masterplan against Jasprit Bumrah and Co. ahead of Boxing Day Test

As the cricket world eagerly awaits the upcoming Boxing Day Test between Australia and India, all eyes are on Travis Head and his unique strategy to counter the lethal bowling attack led by Jasprit Bumrah.

In a recent interview, Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin shed some light on Head’s masterplan, revealing that the Australian batsman has been working closely with the team’s coaching staff to come up with a game plan to tackle Bumrah and company.

According to Ashwin, Head has been focusing on his footwork and positioning against the Indian pacers, and has been working on his shot selection to ensure he is able to capitalize on any loose deliveries.

“Travis Head is a very smart cricketer and he has been studying Bumrah and the other Indian bowlers closely. He has been working on his technique and has a clear plan in mind to counter their strengths,” Ashwin said.

With the series tied at 1-1, the Boxing Day Test promises to be a thrilling encounter, and all eyes will be on Travis Head to see if his masterplan pays off against the formidable Indian bowling attack.

Stay tuned for more updates on this exciting match-up as the two teams prepare to face off at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground.
